m Fro Ed... the A big welcome to the June editon of The Sentinella Magazine for the Axarquia area. Another year is passing us by so quickly, but for the majority of us living here in this lovely part of Spain, June is one of the favourite months of the year. Not only is the weather glorious, but it’s when we start to enjoy the alfresco evenings, the long nights, and just as importantly, there are ferias, fiestas and festivals galore. It’s definitely my favourite month, as school also comes to an end! Those of you with children will know the public schooling system here is not great. Children in Primary are expected to have photographic memories, as only textbook answers will receive a full point in an exam — great if your child DOES have a photographic memory, but if they don’t, that means hours of parrot-like studying. From secondary school age they are not really taught, but generally read to out of a textbook; they are then expected to go home and spend hours studying it themselves in order to be able to pass the 20 or so exams that they get every term. On top of all that, they must pass all the subjects — 10/11 of them — with a 5 and if they fail two of the three main subjects, this leaves them having to repeat the whole academic year again! Therefore I think 70-80% of children of this age attend some form of after-school teaching — either in a private academy or classes that are given after school at the school itself. Have you ever wondered why there are hardly any children out after about 6pm here? They are all at home studying for most of the evening and it’s even harder for those of a different nationality.

On the plus side, there is some good news... I think! The Spanish government announced this month that there will be major changes to the schooling system for Secondary education starting in September 2022. No more learning by memorizing, but more critical thinking, it will be the teachers who decide if a child should move up a year or not, not just depend on exam grades. The grading scales will be

Strange News changed from 1 - 10 and will go back to primary grading of insufficient, sufficient, good, very good and finally outstanding. I have two girls, aged 13 (in 2nd ESO) and 17 in 2nd Bachillerato, and at the time of writing this we are soon to find out if Charli aged 17, has passed Bachillerato. We have everything crossed! Charli has learnt the hard way, but hopefully this new system will mean that children still in the schooling system will have a much easier and happier experience. Although I did read that none of the teachers will be getting any training on the new methods that will be put into place, so that could potentially spell disaster!!!! On that note..have a great month :)

Record age A new contender for the title of the world’s oldest living person has been discovered in north-eastern Brazil. It is thought that Maria Gomes dos Reis could be coming up to her 122nd birthday – but her apparently remarkable age went unnoticed for decades until medics arrived to treat her. Paramedics visited the great-great grandmother in rural Bom Jesus da Lapa after she fell ill. The allegedly 121-year-old, who lives with her granddaughter because all of her children have died, has a birth certificate which says she was born in the village of Bela Vista – where she still lives to this day. It adds that she was born on June 16, 1900 – six months after the end of the 1800s. Guinness World Records currently believe the world’s oldest living person is a French woman Lucile Randon, who was born on February 11, 1904 and is 118 years old. Slithery stowaway Ever freaked out about a spider or a fly sharing the car with you? One man had an even more shocking encounter, when he looked in his wing mirror to see a snake wrapped around it. James Bristow was driving along the M5 towards Staffordshire when he noticed the slithering stowaway. His son Charlie, 25, got out his phone to start filming, and a passenger can be heard saying: ‘I don’t think I have ever seen a snake.’ They tried to find somewhere to pull over where it can get to safety, but there was nowhere to stop as it was a smart motorway. After moving from the front bonnet and onto the wing mirror, the snake then dropped onto the road. The online video has been viewed over 25,000 times and attracted dozens of comments.

Strange News (Continued) Jaws alert A ‘record-breaking’ rare shark has been caught by fishermen off the coast of Ireland. Measuring over nine feet and weighing up to 500lbs, the porbeagle shark is believed to be the largest ever caught in Irish waters. Anglers, Sid, Terry and Peter worked with a team of scientists led by Trinity College Dublin to tag and release the ‘critically’ endangered’ shark. Almost 48 hours after she was released, the shark, nicknamed Danu, was tracked as far away as the Hebrides in Scotland. Nick Payne, shark biologist and assistant professor at Trinity’s School of Natural
Sciences, said the discovery was a significant moment, the Irish Mirror reported. ‘It is exciting to see such huge porbeagles in Irish waters,’ the scientist said. ‘Their conservation status has been really concerning in this part of the world, with the European population considered critically endangered.’ ‘There’s evidence that the Donegal coast may act as a globally important reproductive area for this species, with lots of very large female sharks appearing here for a short period in spring.’

Annoy People How to annoy the bar staff Try these out in your local..! Order one drink at a time, as they like to run backwards and forwards. It keeps them fit. Never put money in their hands. They like to pick it up off the bar, especially if it’s all change in a puddle of beer. When requiring ‘ready salted’ crisps ask for the full range of flavours before asking for ‘plain’ Always wait until they have rung your round into the till before asking for crisps, nuts, snacks, etc… If you have been waiting at the bar for at least two minutes heckle them and tell them you have been there for half an hour – it keeps them on their toes as they have no concept of time. When ordering a round make sure that you
don’t know what you want when you arrive at the bar. Bar staff like to stand and wait around whilst you nip back and forth and shout across the room to find out. Never say please or thank you. The shock could lead them to have a heart attack. Always order Guinness last. Make them wait at the bar with all your other drinks while it settles, then keep reminding them it needs topping up. Once you have received your drinks take them back to your table and stay for a long chat before going back to pay the bill. They’ll still be waiting. The Seychelles was uninhabited until around 1770 when French settlers began to arrive with their African slaves. Before that, pirates had used the islands as bases and stopover points. Today, Seychellois are referred to as having a ‘melting pot’ of cultures, ranging from all over the world particularly Europe, Africa, and India. The Seychelles is comprised of 73 coral islands and 42 inner islands, including Mahé and Praslin, which are formed by granite, the only granite islands in the world! Some of the rarest species of birds can be found in Seychelles, including the bare-legged Scops Owl or Syer. This specific owl is so rare it was once thought to have become extinct, but was rediscovered in 1959. Almost half of the limited landmass in the country is occupied by national parks and reserves.

Axarquia Animal Rescue Needs Your Help Founded in 2011, registered charity, Axarquia Animal Rescue (AAR) is a small group of volunteers dedicated to taking care of, and rehoming, abandoned and abused animals in the Axarquia area. With no physical premises they rely 80% on foster families and 20% on private kennels to give them time to seek a new forever home. They have a great team of volunteers on hand to help in anyway they can. They need your help to become a pet foster parent
join the foster team, they will match you with a suitable pet to foster. If you work or have a full social life and cannot care for young puppies, they will only have you foster adults. The AAR team will put you in touch with other foster parents and they will always be just a phone call away. The AAR will pay the costs of all veterinary care and the equipment you need, plus they can also pay for food if you wish. If you are going on holiday they will find a temporary foster carer whilst you are away. I can’t foster but would like to help:

WE NEED YOU Voluntary Caseworkers and Foster Carers Everyday we have requests to help or re-home abandoned animals, ranging from just born who have to be bottle fed, who have been discarded in bins or countryside, to older dogs, sometimes when owners have passed away. In order to take on more animals, we desprately need more foster carers and caseworkers, without these we could not carry on. We can offer complete support for foster carers with equipment, medication, food, vet treatment and a caseworker will be on hand to help with any queries and will make all arrangements for the things required right through to the adoption. It does not financially cost the foster carer anything, just their time and devotion. It is such a rewarding experience to see a pup that has been abandoned hours old with cord still on thrive to become a beautiful dog. As a caseworker you would be assigned an animal and be supported by a mentor throughout the process until you were comfortable to ´go solo´. The work can be done online and you do not have to live in Spain. Silent tribute ITV’s This Morning host Rochelle Humes awarded Rose Ayling-Ellis with her BAFTA last month in the most heartwarming way — by learning how to announce the winner in sign language. Rochelle handed out the trophy for the ‘must-see moment’, which went to Strictly Come Dancing winners Rose and her pro partner Giovanni Pernice. Rose was the first deaf contestant in Strictly history and lifted the glitterball last year. Now she has another award to add to her shelf. While Clara read out that Rose had won, Rochelle signed out: ‘The winner is Strictly Come Dancing,’ while looking directly at Rose and the Strictly gang, wearing a smile on her face. The award specifically honoured Rose and Giovanni’s silent dance, which they performed as their couple’s choice routine twice last series. When accepting her award – which was the only one voted for by the public – 27-year-old Rose said: ‘It is a very special moment for us because hopefully, it showed how powerful TV can be, where it has actually introduced changes. ‘It has even helped the BSL (British Sign Language) law be passed recently.’ She added: ‘It made people stand up more for sign language and just better deaf awareness and positiveness towards people. We have still got a long way to go but it is such a great start.’ The actress, who has been deaf since birth, has actively campaigned for BSL to be recognised as an official language and be given legal status in the UK.
No to Jezza Jeremy Clarkson has faced yet another blow to his plans for an extension on his Diddly Squat Farm Shop where he films his Amazon Prime Video show Clarkson's Farm. The former Top Gear presenter has had his latest plan to extend his shop's car park from ten to 70 spaces refused by councillors on the grounds that it would be 'visually intrusive and have a harmful impact' on the surrounding countryside. Clarkson, 62, was met with approximately 30 objection comments from nearby neighbours who were concerned that the extension could lead to traffic chaos around the Oxford village of Chadlington. The setback for Clarkson is the second application he has had refused by the council this year — he had also planned on converting his lambing shed into a café with car park spaces but this was also rejected.
Phone a friend? Former Who Wants To Be A Millionaire host Chris Tarrant recently said that despite quitting the show eight years ago, certain aspects of the programme still haunt him to this day. The 75-year-old stepped down as host in 2014, but fans still won't let him forget his time on the show, the Daily Star reports. Tourism Invasion With the weather returning to yet another hot Summer, the tourists are back. Not just back, but BACK!! The post-Covid tourist invasion is set to break all records, with an expected 29.5 million people likely to descend on Andalusian shores, compared with the start of year predictions of 26 to 28 million. That’s 47% up on last year! Covid appears to have been beaten, at least in the minds of those desperately seeking the sun after too long under gloomy skies.

A British couple who have been in the village for 20 years told me recently that they have been doing that walk for donkey’s years, with hardly a soul in site. Now it has changed totally. And the locals, who used to chat leaning on the bar in their favourite hangouts, now practically have to reserve a space in advance just to get their ‘caña’!
Locally, there are plenty of signs of higher levels of visitors. First of all, more foreign cars around again, busier roads, and have you noticed how many Dutch registered vehicles are around? Most of these appear to be house hunting! The other day in our B&B, we had three Dutch couples, all talking at breakfast, and the natural question amongst them was “so are you also here looking to find a house to buy?” One of the couples was “just on holiday”, much to the utter amazement of the other two couples!
Restaurants are packed, so much so that reservations are needed more than ever at weekends if you wish to get a table. Andalucía is Back in Business!

All of this is great for the local economy and for employment and gradually this will also lead to more improvements of local facilities, roads and services. But it is also a bit of a shame. Our little part of Andalucía, La Axarquía, so sleepy and peaceful, is still partly undiscovered, still virgin, still unspoilt. Long may those parts remain that way!
