ou may have seen Lodgic Everyday Community’s E. Market Street building and wondered, “What is that?” You may not be able to tell by the name, but this company, with its third location in Louisville, includes a workplace, event space, cafe, restaurant and childcare facility. Lodgic Workplace Louisville is central to the operation; it’s a space for work with private offices, coworking, meeting spaces and best-in-class amenities and services. Lodgic prides itself on freedom and flexibility and could be the key to finally having a good work-life balance. Lodgic was created to meet the needs of a changing workforce, as they provide a hospitality-forward workspace, flexible childcare, all-day food and beverage and event experiences. It’s not all about work, though–it’s also all for a good cause. The lodge-themed company was based on the Loyal Order of

the Moose, a fraternal service organization founded in 1888. In the early 1900’s Jame J. Davis created Mooseheart Child City & School as a safety net for working-class families and children in trauma and need, and it’s still open to applications from any child in need. The same foundation created Lodgic Everyday Community to serve new generations of working people, families, children and communities in whole new ways. Lodgic opened its doors in 2018 and now has three locations, including Champaign, Illinois, Madison, Wisconsin, and now, Louisville. One-hundred percent of proceeds from Lodgic Everyday Community and its brands are reinvested in the children at Mooseheart and good works here in Louisville to support the aspirations of children, families, independent workers, small businesses, and communities. The company keeps its commitment to its parent organization, Moose International, which has been doing good things for its communities across the nation for 100 years, according to CEO Cheryl Farr. Even the artwork around the building is sourced exclusively from local artists. “We wanted to build spaces

and programming in a way that reflects and engages the community,” says Cheryl. “It’s a local effort in cultural fluency.”

Now, Louisville is home to a flexible, coworking space, a fairly new concept where members can choose from one of more than 20 private offices for an individual or a team, a designated desk or an open seat in the shared workspace.

The membership comes with 24/7 access to a seamless, high-tech work environment, concierge team and areas to host clients and partners for virtual and in-person meetings. The full-service workplace includes perks like continuous cleaning and sanitizing services, free printing, private mother’s room, unlimited coffee and snacks and happy hours with beer, wine and snacks. “We take

If that’s not enough to attract someone to Lodgic, there is always the Everyday Kitchen Restaurant & Bar and daytime Everyday Kitchen Cafe. Everyday Kitchen’s chef Mike Wajda creates regional dishes, local flavors, and creative cocktails that showcase Kentucky’s and surrounding states’ farmers. care of your needs so you don’t have to,” Cheryl says. We’re helping working people thrive. We want them to have the best advantage for success.” As most parents know, the key to their success is flexible childcare. Lodgic Kids Camp is full-time, part-time or scheduled hourly childcare services for children from 12 months to 12 years old. The facility provides care before and after school, over breaks, appointments or date nights, allowing parents and guardians to choose the enrollment plan that suits their needs. While at work, Kids Camp will allow children to play and learn with age-appropriate learning materials for literacy, math, science, movement, music, creative arts and social and emotional skill-building. Play-based learning centers on the six Mooseheart values, including kindness, respect, service, caring, responsibility and empathy. Parents can purchase flexible weekly passes or hourly packages for their little ones; unlike most childcare centers, no long-term commitments are required.

Lodgic is even home to holiday or work parties and outings with open event spaces. Expert event planners coordinate at every step and events include chef-prepared menus and beverage programs tailored to the customer. Corporate or social events can be designed to the host’s liking with classroom and network-style rooms and AV capabilities. 

Lodgic Workplace, Lodgic Kids Camp, Everyday Kitchen Cafe, Everyday Kitchen Restaurant & Bar and the building’s event space are open to the public. Multiple membership types are available at Lodgic Workplace for purchase or you can try it out with a day pass. Contact Workplace Concierge to book a tour or start your membership at 502-8057347 or coworking.louisville.lodgic. org. All information on Lodgic Everyday Community is available at lodgic.org.

hen Niki and Brandon Whiting thought about building their dream home, first on their list of wants was neighborhood; Anchorage was their pick. The couple bought a lot in 2016 and started building right away with Jimmy King and Jason Black from Artisan Signature Homes. “We always dreamed of building a house…we just made it a goal,” Niki says. The Whiting’s looked at inspiration for a mid-century modern vibe, but they also insisted on a cozy feel, too. What resulted is a 7,000-square-foot, 5-bedroom, 7-bathroom home of their own. The downstairs family and living rooms are open to the functional kitchen, ideal for quality time. “I envisioned hosting and entertaining,” Niki says. “It’s a space that would accommodate a lot of people.”

SHE DESCRIBES HER STYLE AS “WARM, OPEN, AND BRIGHT,” AS SHE USES MOSTLY BLACK AND WHITE WITH POPS OF GREEN. Niki worked with designer Gretchen Black during the build on the interior finishes of the home and then Niki designed the interiors of the project, saying it was like a hobby. “I wanted to say that I did it,” she says. “It gave me something that I could do that was fun.” The decor is modern but with a bohemian, mid-century flair, a style, Niki says, is interchangeable. “The house and structure are timeless, but I can swap out the decorative pieces,”

she says. The floors capture guests’ attention with their engineered hardwood throughout, pairing well with the white beveled cabinets, gold-accented features and subway tile in the kitchen. Appliances are mostly integrated, except for the stove and hood, which comes from the Italian brand ILVE and its Majestic line. The cabinetry’s pointed shape continues on the wooden sides of the island. “It’s very subtle but one of my favorite parts of the kitchen. Instead of a traditional dining room, the family went for a built-in breakfast nook for themselves and their three kids.

at home Modern lighting from Restoration Hardware lights the common rooms and a modern, rectangular modern gas fireplace is remote controlled. The master bedroom is hidden down a hallway, creating its own space in the home where French doors lead to an outside sitting area. The master bath comes complete with large rectangular black and white tile floors with gray grout and penny tile in the floor of the shower. The staircase from the unfinished basement to the second floor was custom made, metal and modern. Upstairs, three bedrooms and three bathrooms make the space kid-friendly along with bunk beds for guests. An in-law suite is above the garage with a bedroom, bathroom, sitting room, mini kitchen and additional bunk beds. The idea for all of the beds was to account for visits from all of Brandon’s large family. “The idea was they don’t stay in a hotel, they come and stay here,” she says of the family visiting from Georgia, Nashville, Ohio and New York. Last year, Niki says, she had 22 people staying at their Anchorage home. Going out the first-floor French doors opening from the living room, leads to the backyard, ideal for entertainment with its enclosed patio, wood burning fireplace, television and three couches. The large pieces are from Restoration Hardware and CB2, continuing with the black, white and green theme. Five archways lead to the 20by-40 feet modern pool with sprinkler water features, a sitting ledge in the deep end, tanning ledge and surrounded by Heartstone tiling. The couple created a home gym in the traditional pool house for Niki’s independent health and wellness company.

OVERALL, THE COUPLE WAS DELIGHTED BY THE WORK OF ARTISAN SIGNATURE HOMES. “They really listened to what our style is and what we wanted and created that,” Niki says. “Artisan is more traditional, and we are more modern and contemporary. They were able to mesh those and create a more modern take.” Jimmy King and Jason Black are award-winning builders with the premier luxury brand Artisan Signature Homes. He recently won the 2022 Southern Living Magazine Builder Member of the Year. For over 15 years, Jimmy and Jason of Artisan Signature Homes have been building award-winning homes in Louisville and Southern Indiana. The company focuses on finely-crafted luxury homes with timeless designs and an emphasis on livability for its clients. “We love to incorporate the latest ideas in architecture, interior design and building science in our homes,” Jimmy says. “Artisan Signature Homes listens to their client's wants, needs and dreams and then brings these ideas to life in a home that homeowners can enjoy for a lifetime. In the case specifically for the Whiting’s, we were able to put more of a modern flair on such a beautiful home for a fantastic family.” 

top six Decorating

When it comes to decorating your home, everyone wants to create a space that is cozy, inviting and representative of themselves and their lifestyle. However, there is such a thing as too much! When decorating, you want to make sure you’re not creating clutter and chaos by accident. Here are some common mistakes you’ll want to avoid to end up with a beautiful and polished home.

ONE // Relying too much on open storage Bookcases and built-in shelving have become a popular home decor element loved by all. They can create a stunning design piece when accented the right way. Items like framed photos, books and collectibles are great ways to fill open shelving. What you want to avoid is cramming something in every inch of space causing it to become too full and cluttered. When decorating open storage, be sure to leave open space around the items allowing them to breathe as a whole.

Faux Pas

Also, open storage is not the place for electronics and cords. This is an easy way to create clutter. Instead, tuck these away behind a cabinet or in a basket to make your shelving more appealing to the eye.

TWO // using too many colors When deciding on paint colors and decor for your home, don’t go crazy with the number of colors you’re using. This automatically causes the eye to dance around and feel chaotic. Instead, decide on one or two hues along with a neutral shade to keep the entire room within the same color family. You can get creative by using different tones and shades of the same color to create depth while also keeping the overall look chic and cohesive.

three // adding too many

Photo courtesy of Scout & Nimble

accent pillows

This mistake speaks for itself. Don’t get excited at your local TJMaxx and purchase an abundance of throw pillows for your couch or bed thinking that they’ll all go together perfectly. A good rule of thumb is 2-3 pillows on each end of a sofa to create comfort and a visually pleasing space.

four // pushing furniture

against walls

Available at House

of Jade Home

A lot of us might be naturally inclined to use our furniture to frame the lining of a room thinking that it opens up the middle of the room, when in reality it does the opposite. By placing a piece of furniture on every inch of the walls, you’re creating a ‘heaviness’ around the room. Instead, bring your furniture inward and create more conversational spaces that allow the room to really breathe.

five // placing too much decor on tables

When decorating tables like a living room coffee table, the fewer items the better. You don’t want to cause clutter by overdecorating. Keep the items personal and functional. For example, a beautiful tray on your entry table to hold your keys and sunglasses. Place decor in small groupings to allow the table to feel clean and breathable.

six // hanging pictures

randomly

Hanging beautiful art or family photos is the perfect way to decorate and personalize a home. However, adding too many pieces can cause your walls to feel chaotic and haphazard. Instead, place photos in an organized gallery wall arrangement to instantly make the room feel more balanced and put together. 

Contrast

We love a high-contrast color scheme. They're playful, energizing and unique. Many homeowners fear these palettes, but with a little guidance, they can be absolutely showstopping.

Orange

and Blue

When it comes to unexpected color schemes, it doesn't get much more surprising than the pairing of orange and blue. It feels familiar and yet totally different, warm yet cool, dynamic yet comfortable; a true study in contrasts! Making this contrast work for you means utilizing blue wherever possible then peppering in a few bold touches of orange. Wrap up the look with dark woods, leather and beige accents.

and Green

Is there any color combo more classically southern than pink and green? Whether you favor hot pink and lime or pretty blushes and sage, it's hard to top this dynamic duo of color! That said, this is a color pairing that asks you to tread lightly. To prevent visual burnout, use these hues throughout a space that is otherwise fairly neutral. Shades of pink and green always look great with golds and brass, but black metal accents can really allow these shades to shine! If you're hoping to make your space light, bright and airy, look no further; this is the color scheme you need.

Fuschia

and Brown

When it comes to irreverent color schemes, nothing can top fuschia. Falling somewhere between rich purple and striking magenta, this color is an instant conversation starter. But that boldness comes at a price. On its own, this powerhouse hue can come across as very unsophisticated, even juvenile. That's where warm, honeyed browns come in. Natural woods, deep leather and soft beige tones help ground fanciful fuschia. Yellow, gold and brass accents bring tons of visual appeal and glam. However you approach this constrasting combo, remember that less is always more with fuschia. 

Neutrals and Natural Materials If there’s one thing we know for certain, it’s that neutrals never go out of style. This year, homeowners are reaching for classic shades like beige, cream, gray, and brown with warm undertones to cover their walls. We’re also seeing natural earth colors such as green and teracotta as a base to create something eye-catching by layering in more vibrant colors. People are also aiming for longevity and timelessness in their home spaces. Organic materials such as clay, natural wood, stone, rattan, and brick help create a zen-like feeling in your home. To add more interest to a calming canvas, you can blend your neutrals with furniture or decorative elements that contain jewel tones, trees, curved furniture, and statement art. West Elm

Chairish

Vintage

Textiles

If you haven’t already noticed, vintage is making a huge comeback in about every category of life, home decor included. Because of supply shortages and homeowners becoming increasingly more sustainable, vintage furniture has become a popular option when decorating the home. Vintage furniture is not only sustainable, but it allows your personality to shine through in your home. There’s a past with this type of furniture, and many pieces have intricate, personal details that can’t be recreated. Going vintage doesn’t mean we’re going full-on grandma, though. We’re going to see a mix of old and new: an eclectic barrel back chair paired with contemporary artwork, for example. A fun aspect about going with vintage goods is the certainty that none of your neighbors will own the same piece! You can score unique furniture, textiles, and accessories at local thrift stores, flea markets, estate sales, repurposed furniture stores, or even Facebook Marketplace.

To balance out your neutrals, you’re going to need a little bit of texture… or a lot of texture! Velvet, sherpa, fringe, and boucle are all fabric options that can make a space feel and look luxurious. Maybe we’ve spent too much time at home during the pandemic, but cozy fabrics and materials are a must in every room this year. It may seem daunting to add texture to your home for fear of overdoing it, but it can be as simple as layering different fabrics on your bed. Clean, plain base fabrics allow you to layer chunky knit throws with tweeds and jacquards or a velvet duvet cover with leather pillows. Once you’ve decided on materials, pile up those pillows and drape a blanket across the foot of your bed to create a comfy, cozy, chic bedroom.

louisville homes & gardens | May 2022 25

at home

Bold Tones Even though we’re focusing on neutral tones as a base layer, we’re still embracing color! Just like adding vintage pieces of furniture, eye-catching colors allow your personality and individuality to shine through in your home. Bright, mid-century hues are making a comeback, such as orange-tinged reds, jewel-toned greens, dusty blues, terracotta pinks, and buttery yellows. Consider color psychology: green hues radiate comfort and safety, while pinks promote warmth and kindness. If you’re not one for bright pops of color, black accents and hardware can add edge and depth to minimalistic spaces. Choose light, airy colors for main elements like sofas, paint color, and chairs, but swap that gold floor mirror for a black one. This will provide for a pop of contrast without taking away from your overall vibe of refinement.

Versatile Spaces and Furniture

If you’re a plant parent, this trend goes out to you. We’re all craving a stronger connection with the outside world. That’s why we’re seeing more green hues, nature-themed spaces, and, of course, more plants! Houseplants promote clean air and have a calming effect in whatever room they’re placed in. Many popular plants, including monsteras (the swiss cheese plant) and pothos, are relatively easy-going and don’t require constant care. Studies have shown that houseplants have various benefits, from air purification to reducing stress and increasing creativity and productivity. If that’s not enough to convince you to become a horticulture enthusiast, they also create an aesthetically soft, natural space while accenting signature pieces, leaving you with a visual connection to nature. More trending plants for 2022 include parlour palms, foliage houseplants, and the beautiful Alcoasia Silver Dragon. Now I’ve got myself wanting to go buy more plants!

Multifunctional spaces are hot in 2022, with many individuals continuing to work or attend school from home. Being stuck at home for so long made people realize how they could add more functionality to a space. For smaller areas, furniture that offers multiple functions is ideal, like an ottoman that can be used for extra seating or an additional side table. Consider rearranging furniture and décor by function and move similarly functioning pieces to separate areas. This will allow for more space and functionality in your home – and it may be your new favorite setup! Smart furniture designed with multiple functions in mind or shelving that can open and reveal a TV, for example, can provide style and beauty for your home, but functionality as well. 
