n JOIN THE FUN!
Splash ‘n’ Dash for Norton Children’s Hospital With summer in full swing, it’s time to find fun ways to beat the heat. A day at the pool is great, but what if there was a way to add purpose to your play? The Norton Children’s Hospital Splash ‘n’ Dash Walk/Run invites fun-seekers of all ages to race through obstacle-filled courses. All are welcome to join the 5K or family-friendly 1K course. The choice of dash is yours, but all roads lead to splash! Navigate puddles, bubbles, super soakers and more as you stay cool in the splash zones. You can even choose to run the 5K course competitively, complete with timed results and medals for top finishers. This year’s Splash ‘n’ Dash will take place in a new location! On the morning of Saturday, Aug. 6, E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park becomes the new home of the splash zones. In addition to the race courses, you can enjoy the “Just For Kids” Zone. This interactive space will feature inflatable slides, obstacles, water games, music, food and beverages, plus our furry friends from Norton Healthcare’s Heel, Dog, Heal facility dog team. “My kids ask about Splash ‘n’ Dash every summer” said Jennifer Oxley, an event captain and fundraiser. “The whole family gets active together, the kids have a ball with the water obstacles, and on top of that, we get to make a difference in the community.” All proceeds from Splash ‘n’ Dash support the more than 215,000 kids who receive care at a Norton Children’s facility each year. That means your contributions help provide programs, equipment, facilities, research, advocacy and education to the children of our community. Since the Norton Children’s Hospital Splash ‘n’ Dash Walk/Run began in 2015, the event has raised over $250,000 to support kids in need! When you register to participate in Splash ‘n’ Dash, you even have the option to designate how you would like your contribution to be used. So whether your family has a special connection to a particular department or specialty, or you simply want to support the area of greatest need, Splash ‘n’ Dash has you covered. This event has something for everyone. Set a new personal record on the competitive 5K course. Make lasting memories on a family fun run. Raise the bar for summer splashing. The best part is, any way you choose to splash or dash gives back in support of our community!

Leadership Louisville Center:
Join Ignite Louisville Class of 2023! The Leadership Louisville Center is accepting applications through July 29, 2022, for the Spring 2023 Ignite Louisville class. The award-winning Ignite Louisville professional development program for up-and-coming leaders aged 25-45 is a six-month experience combining training, deep networking, and team building. Beginning with a two-day overnight retreat in late October, the class meets monthly for Program Days and hands-on nonprofit partnership projects through the Ignite Louisville Challenge. It concludes with a competition, graduation, and celebration in April 2023. Presented by Norton Healthcare, Ignite Louisville launched in 2004 and has graduated over 1160 exceptional young professional leaders. The program distinctively influences the skills, networks, and perspectives shaping the region’s business and community associations for decades. More immediate benefits include higherperforming talent, employee engagement and retention, and valuable business connections. To make space for new programs launching soon, the Leadership Louisville Center is offering only one Ignite Louisville class in the next year instead of two, as held in previous years. "Brown-Forman has been a long-time supporter of this program because we believe it is an excellent way

to develop important skills for our up-and-coming leaders,” says Brown-Forman Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer Kirsten Hawley. “Ignite Louisville teaches participants how to influence without authority, leverage diversity, diagnose issues, and lead change – skills they practice with nonprofit agencies of their choosing. Our employees bring these leadership skills back to their day jobs and can apply their learning to the roles they have today and will have in the future." Leadership Louisville Center invites interested organizations and individuals to join them for an Ignite Louisville info session with an opportunity to hear from program graduates, ask questions, and determine whether the experience is a fit. This free event takes place Wednesday, July 13, 2022, 5 - 7:00 p.m. ET at Noble Funk Brewing Company, 922 South 2nd Street in Old Louisville. Lexington
Louisville’s sister city offers so much, we couldn’t hope to cover it all here. Suffice to say that they understand horses, Bourbon and FUN just like we do. From taking a private tour of one of the many horse farms where Derby legends were born and bred to enjoying a little nightlife, there’s so much to discover! And since it’s just a short drive down the road, you’ll love going back again and again to explore all of the hidden gems waiting in the 859. TOP Tip: when you’re in town, be sure to pick up OUR sister magazine, TOPS Lexington! It’ll steer you towards the best dining, shopping and entertainment the Bluegrass Region has to offer.
Must do:
Take a trackside tour at Keeneland!
Cincinnati
Baseball, beer, underground tours, art, shopping, history, an incredible zoo… Cincinnati offers cultural experiences by the boatload. We love walking through Over-the-Rhine, checking out some amazing art, then pulling together a delicious dinner at Findlay Market.
Must do:
Take selfies in the American Sign Museum... it's very Insta-worthy!
Lake Cumberland
Proudly billed as “The Houseboat Capital of the World,” Lake Cumberland boasts hiking, fishing, camping, golf and of course boating. In the immediate area, you’ll find wineries, dining, rustic accommodations, parks and more to keep your whole family entertained. photo courtesy Kentucky Tourism
Must do:
Get out on the water... in a houseboat, if at all possible (you can rent one!)
Natural Bridge & Red River Gorge
Get out of town and into the natural splendor of Kentucky! This state resort park offers tons of outdoor activities and stunning views. Hikers know that this area offers some of the coolest trails in the state. photo courtesy Kentucky Tourism
Must do:
Ride the skylift up and see the Natural Bridge from the top. It's an incredible vista you'll never forget!
Evansville, Indiana
Evansville is one of those great towns that’s like Goldilocks: it’s juuuuust big enough to offer lots of entertainment, but it still manages to bring the smalltown charm. You’ll find lots of outdoor fun, museums, art, golf, nightlife, parks and history with something for everyone in the family to fall in love with. (Speaking of fall, you'll want to visit again during leaf-peeping season!)
Must do:
Check out everything that's going on in Haynie's Corner Arts District... or just head to Bally's Evansville for a little fun!

Bardstown
Bourbon is a big part of Kentucky’s DNA. If there’s a heart of Bourbon country, it’s Bardstown. There’s plenty of history within the quaint town, and it serves as your gateway to all of the many distilleries scattered throughout the area. photo courtesy Kentucky Tourism
Must do:
Make reservations for My Old Kentucky Dinner Train experience.
Frankfort
If it’s been a while since you really explored Kentucky’s capital city, it’s high time you hit the road! From historic landmarks to great dining, there’s tons to explore. And if you’ve never done the “tourist thing” in Frankfort, what are you waiting for? photo courtesy Kentucky Tourism
Must do:
Visit the Kentucky state capital!
Glendale
Love antiquing? Take a step back in time in this quaint little Kentucky town. Glendale’s many antique malls and boutique shops offer hours of treasure hunting. (Plus you can stop off in Bardstown on the way back!) photo courtesy Side Track Shops
Must do:
Have lunch at The Whistle Stop, right alongside the train tracks. And yes, they serve Fried Green Tomtaotes!

aptist Health Milestone offers an array of services. Our main goal is to keep members happy and healthy. At some point in our lives, we may experience a surgery or may be in need of physical therapy. As an extension of Baptist Health Milestone, we offer on-site physical therapy with qualified experienced therapists, and a wide range of available treatments, including aquatic therapy. This amenity is available to members and nonmembers. The plus is that Baptist Health Milestone Physical Therapy is located within the Baptist Health Milestone Wellness Center. Throughout your treatment, our qualified physical therapists will communicate with your physician to keep them in the know with progress or concerns. Our trained
therapists will assist with a variety of health needs, including: rehab following surgery, sports related injuries, sciatica, hip and knee injuries, custom orthotics, vestibular rehabilitation, and much more. Some treatments available at our clinic include: aquatic therapy in our warm therapy pool, one-on-one training to correct faulty posture and help restore muscle balance, hands on manual therapy, and much more. Whether you are dealing with an injury or chronic pain, seeking out physical therapy can not only improve you physically but do wonders for you mentally. Movement increases the serotonin in your brain, as well as boosts endorphins. When your body is in pain, it may be difficult to sleep or do day to day activities. Pursuing physical therapy following an injury will be an overall positive outcome for healing. Some of our amazing therapists work closely with members and nonmembers of our Milestone facility. Pam Beury, the clinical manager, oversees the daily operations of the clinic as well as treating patients. The clinic has four full time and four part time physical therapists. 4Laser Hair Removal is the Best Self-care Treatment RE A SONS
Self-care is doing what makes you happy and healthy. Anything to help our wellbeing and self-confidence is important, including daily grooming routines. Dealing with unwanted body hair affects our time and budget. Laser hair removal gives you more time and the confidence to face the world without worrying about stubble. We talked to Louisville’s laser hair removal experts at Milan Laser Hair Removal to learn why laser hair removal is the ultimate self-care treatment!
1. It saves you time. The average person spends about 39 hours a year shaving. And you have to make monthly salon waxing appointments for temporary results. With laser hair removal, you get permanent results when done properly. A laser pulse is delivered directly to the hair follicle, targeting the pigment in the hair. The heat from the laser destroys the follicle, and that hair can never grow again. The average Milan Laser client is 95%+ hair-free within seven to 10 treatments.
2. It saves you money. About $3,800 is spent over a lifetime on shaving essentials. For salon appointments, you spend $24,000 over a lifetime. Money spent on waxing and shaving costs more in the end. For the best value, try places that offer payment plans. For instance, Milan Laser offers payment plans that can be as low as $29 a month. And because new follicles can become active, and new hair can grow due to hormone changes, touch-up fees come in. To guarantee lifetime results,
some places offer unlimited packages, like Milan Laser, so you’ll never worry about touch-up fees.
3. It’s more comfortable than you think!
Many say laser hair removal feels like the sting of a rubber band snapping, but only for a millisecond—the time it takes to zap your hair. Many lasers, such as Milan’s Candela GentleMax Pro, have built-in comfort features. Some less sophisticated lasers use numbing creams, gels, or chilled air. The Candela uses a cooling cryogen mist released after each laser pulse to reduce any potential discomfort.
4. It’s for everyone! It’s not just for a certain age, gender, or skin tone! Laser hair removal works for all skin tones when performed correctly.
It’s important to find a provider with technologies to treat the entire skin tone spectrum. For instance, Milan Laser’s Candela GentleMax Pro includes two lasers— the Nd: YAG for darker skin and the Alexandrite for lighter skin tones. Because of this, places like Milan Laser can create a customized treatment plan for everyone.

Mental Health by Dawn Anderson
M
ental health is a linchpin to many of the top social issues of our time, including the COVID-19 pandemic, racial trauma, addiction, homelessness, and gun violence. A scientific brief released by the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that the global prevalence of anxiety and depression increased by 25% in the first year of the pandemic. But mental health should also be a daily concern for each of us as individuals and in our family structures. 37% of US high school students report regular mental health challenges in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Adolescent Behaviors and Experiences Survey. For this our annual Health & Beauty issue, we hope to provide awareness, information, and coping strategies to work toward healing and overcoming the stigma of mental illness. According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, “Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.” Mental health problems can affect your thinking, mood, and behavior. Contributing factors include genetics, brain chemistry, trauma, abuse, and family history of mental health problems. Additional causes of mental health problems are stressors such as social isolation,
! s r e t t a M
experiencing discrimination/stigma/racism, financial difficulties, unemployment, homelessness or poor housing, grief, head injuries, neurological conditions, other long-term physical health conditions, and longterm caregiving. Even the most positive life events getting married, moving, having/adopting a baby - can cause stress. Early warning signs of mental health problems are: • Eating too much or too little • Excessive sleeping or insomnia • Lack of energy, changes in libido • Apathy or numbness • Unexplained aches and pains • Feelings of helplessness or hopelessness • Substance abuse • Inordinate confusion, forgetfulness, nervousness, anger, • worry, and fear • Severe mood swings • Persistent thoughts and memories • Delusion, paranoia, hallucinations • Thoughts of self-harm or violence toward others • Executive dysfunction: difficulty with planning, organization, concentration, mental focus, information analysis/processing, emotional and behavioral management, memory, time management, multitasking, problem-solving, etc.

These early warning signs can potentially develop into mental health disorders if left untreated. Some common mental health diagnoses are: • Anxiety Disorders: Panic Disorder, Phobias, ObsessiveCompulsive Disorder (OCD) • Behavioral Disorders: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Conduct Disorder, OppositionalDefiant Disorder (ODD) • Body-Image & Eating Disorders: Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia, Binge Eating • Mental Health and Substance Abuse Disorders • Mood Disorders: Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), Self-Harm • Personality Disorders: Antisocial Personality Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Histrionic Personality Disorder, etc. • Psychotic Disorders: Schizophrenia • Suicidal Behavior • Trauma and Stress-Related Disorders: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) So what are some ways to help prevent mental health problems or improve our mental health?
RESOURCES:
• Reach out to others and get professional help if you need it. Keep up with routine medical care. • Practice positive thinking. Recognize negative thoughts and replace them with helpful self-talk. • Exercise and immerse yourself in nature. • Help others. • Get proper sleep with comfortable bedding, climate control, white noise, no electronic devices, etc. • Develop coping skills.

Online mental health counseling, apps, and telehealth prevalence have increased dramatically in recent years. With so many options and the reality of decision fatigue or indecision due to mental health struggles, choosing the best fit can be difficult. Just last month, Forbes Health published a ranking of online therapy providers developed from an analysis of therapist credentials, price per session, insurance options, free consultation availability, therapist selection options, and therapist availability. •
JULY 2022 | TOPS Louisville
On behalf of the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI), mental health advocate Emmie Pombo suggests some self-help techniques for coping with mental illness: • Radical Acceptance: According to Marsha Linehan, the creator of dialectical behavior therapy, radical acceptance is “completely and totally accepting something from the depths of your soul, with your heart and your mind.” Accept what is happening and how you feel to “act, prepare, and keep yourself safe.” • Deep Breathing: 5-3-7 breathing, for example. Inhale for 5 seconds, hold for 3 seconds, and exhale for 7 seconds. Deep breathing exercises send positive signals to the brain, slowing the heart rate and relaxing the body. • Opposite-To-Emotion Thinking: Act in opposition to your emotions. For example, if you are upset and feel an urge to isolate yourself, force yourself to get out and be around others instead. • 5 Senses/Grounding: The 5-4-3-2-1 coping technique for anxiety relief engages the five senses to calm and help focus when you feel panicky or out of control. Acknowledge 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste. • Mental Reframing: Take an emotion or stressor and think of it differently. “This traffic is bad, but I’ll still get to where I’m going. There’s nothing I can do about it, so I’ll just listen to music or an audiobook to pass the time.” • Emotion Awareness: Accept how you feel, feel the feeling, and take healthy action. •

Vitamins A, B, C, D, E, K. Potassium, Calcium, Zinc, Magnesium. Collagen, Fish Oil, Melatonin...
When you step into the Vitamin aisle of your favorite store, you're confronted with a wall of options. But what do you know about these supplements? And more importantly, which ones are right for you?
Multivitamin
For most people, a daily multivitamin is the easiest way to ensure you're getting the essential vitamins and minerals your body needs. Be sure you take a vitamin geared to your unique needs. For instance, there are men's, women's and children's multivitamins, as well as multivitamins tailored for seniors.
Vitamin A A helps with night vision, making red blood cells and fight off infections. It may help prevent macular degeneration and some cell damage.
Vitamin B There are several B vitamins. Each has its own function, but most support your overall energy level. If you need to
BREAKDOWN supplement your B intake, be sure which kind of B vitamin you need. A B vitamin called folate (sold as folic acid) is especially important during pregnancy! Another, biotin, may support hair and nail growth.
Vitamin C If you're a social butterfly, this is your best friend. While this vitamin is most well-known for boosting your immune health, it also helps your bones, muscles and skin grow.
Vitamin D This vitamin helps your bones stay strong. It also helps your nerves carry messages around your body.
Vitamin E E is a lesser-known vitamin, but still very important! It helps prevent cell damage caused by pollution and UV rays. It also helps keep your blood pumping!
Vitamin K
This supports blood clotting and ensures you have healthy bones. A heads-up: if you take warfarin, watch your K intake; too much can stop the drug from working.
Do you need to rethink your supplement strategy? Good news: if you're taking a multivitamin – or perhaps even if you're simply eating a well-balanced diet with lots of varied vegetables, fruits, whole grains and proteins – you may not need to worry! But if you're not sure, have experienced recent lifestyle changes or have a chronic condition that may affect your absorption or needs (including pregnancy), talk to your doctor. They can run a complete blood panel to see if you're lacking any important vitamins or minerals. They can also advise whether you'd benefit from taking any other supplements. Calcium
You know this helps support strong bones and teeth! But did you know it also helps with muscles – including your heart? How much you need depends on a number of factors, so be sure to talk to your doctor about this important mineral.
Chromium
This mineral may help keep your blood sugar levels steady. Most people get plenty from eating broccoli, grapes, lean beef, wine and whole wheat.
Iodine
Ever notice that your box of salt says it's "iodized?" That's because iodine has been added, helping you get plenty of this mineral in your diet. Too much can be harmful and can affect certain medications.
Iron
This mineral helps you make healthy red blood cells, which in turn carry oxygen to your tissues. This is an important mineral to discuss with your doctor.
Magnesium
Muscles – including your heart – need magnesium to keep moving. It also helps control your blood sugar and blood pressure!
Potassium
This mineral supports your blood pressure and kidneys. But too much or too little can cause trouble.
Selenium
From fighting off infection to supporting your thyroid, this mineral is very important – but you probably get plenty from your diet. Too much can cause some negative side effects, such as brittle nails, nausea, irritability and more.
Zinc
This wonder mineral helps you see, smell, heal and fight infections.
Do you need to worry? Good news: f you're taking a multivitamin – or perhaps even if you're simply eating a well-balanced diet with lots of varied vegetables, fruits, whole grains and proteins – probably not! But if you're not sure or have a chronic condition that may affect your absorption, talk to your doctor. They can run a complete blood panel to see if you're lacking any important vitamins or mineral, and they can also advise whether you'd benefit from taking any other supplements.

O er Supplements Fish Oil/Omega-3
This supplement helps support cell growth and your overall immune system. Many people take fish oil or other Omega-3 supplements for heart health as they age. Fish oil especially can help lower your triglycerides.
CoQ10
This bizarre-sounding nutrient helps convert food into energy. As a supplement, it can help raise "good" cholesterol and reduce inflamation. It has also been seen in studies to prevent migraines!
Probiotics
Anyone with "tummy troubles" has been recommended probiotics at some point. These live bacteria and yeasts help support your gut health.
Turmeric
Curcumin, a compound found in this spice, has been shown to have antinflammatory properties. It is recommended as a supplement for people suffering from arthritis or ulcerative colitis, among others.
Melatonin
Can't sleep? Melatonin is a hormone that your brain naturally produces in response to darkness, helping you feel sleepy at the appropriate time of day. People who struggle to fall asleep often find this supplement helpful... especially if they have to sleep outside of "normal" sleep hours, such as nurses who work the graveyard shift.
Collagen
Collagen is a protein that your body naturally produces that helps support your skin's structure and suppleness. Your body produces less as you age, so many people start taking this supplement in their mid-to-late 30s.
Cranberry
Studies have shown that regularly eating cranberries or taking a cranberry supplement can help prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney infections and bladder infections.
Protein Powders
If you regularly work out or perform strenuous activity, protein supplements can help your body recover – and help you build new muscle! •

Celebrates 3 Years at Comprehensive Vein Care by Dawn Anderson | photos by Dick Arnspiger
Dr. Steve Samuel and his wife, Marketing Director Lori, are thrilled to be celebrating the 3rd anniversary of Comprehensive Vein Care on July 1, 2022. The Jeffersonville, Indiana, venous insufficiency practice grew out of Dr. Samuel’s experience with leg pain and varicose veins due to 33 years of 12-hour days on his feet as a general surgeon. The treatment he received made such a big difference in his life that he traveled all over the country to study and become certified in vein care. Symptoms of venous insufficiency range from cosmetic to those with significant medical implications. In addition to heavy, tired, swollen legs, spider veins, varicose veins, venous ulcers, and lymphedema are all caused by venous insufficiency. A significant advantage of Comprehensive Vein Care is procedures performed at one location under a local anesthetic, without incisions or stitches. Patients may return to work the same or the next day. “Everything I do is cutting-edge technology and the best for my patients!” Dr. Samuel is a Featured Member of the American Vein & Lymphatic Society, a member of the American College of Surgeons, and has received only five-star reviews from patients. Forty percent of patients are from Louisville, and 60% are from Indiana. “We are so excited by the trajectory, positivity, and growth we continue to see here,” says Dr. Samuel. “The practice has expanded from just Lori and me to six more employees, with a nurse practitioner joining our staff this fall. Lori and I are grateful for a fantastic team and appreciate the support from family and friends who have contributed to our success!” Trust Dr. Samuel with your detailed venous insufficiency consultation and workup. He offers a referral program with each new referral, qualifying you for a free sclerotherapy session. For more information, visit www.comprehensiveveincare.net and follow @ComprehensiveVeins on Facebook. Call (502) 583-7741 to make an appointment.

When
Amanda and Brad Eckmann decided to move from Nashville to his hometown of Louisville in 2018, the couple knew they wanted a move-in-ready space to grow their family. Jason and Gretchen Black, along with Jimmy King of Artisan Signature Homes, created a custom, 6-bedroom, 7-½-bath, 7,800-square-foot Glenview Park home that would later work for the Eckmanns, who now have two children—a 5-year-old and a 4-year-old. The New England, Hamptons-style home is located on a corner lot allowing for a peaceful existence for the children to ride their bikes and play outside. Jason and Gretchen teamed up to create the "classic and timeless"
property from the ground up, choosing real cedar Shake shingles in a solid gray stain and painted brick in Pure White by Sherwin-Williams. Amanda's style is mid-century modern, and Brad's is more traditional; when they made the already white and bright home East End home their own, they decided to mix their two design preferences to "make everyone happy," says Amanda, owner of Jones & Daughters Boutique. She and interior designer Hannah Crowell added modern, gold lighting fixtures throughout the home from Jonathan Adler, Circa Lighting and Anthropologie, mixing in coastal colors to accentuate the pure white. All floors throughout the home are prefinished white oak with a medium stain.

Two
bedrooms on the main floor were put in place for a family to age in the home. The primary suite is tucked back in a long hallway. The main bedroom features vaulted ceilings that show off the Aztec-tiled fireplace and Les Indiennes Indian-block wallpaper. The marble tub in the primary suite is the focal point, along with the custom white cabinetry and steam shower.
In
the kitchen, a stained oak hood overlooks a Thermador 48-inch professional range; a timeless white refrigerator is built into the walls, along with a builtin breakfast table off the island. Windows behind the sink allow for another avenue for light. Outside the three sets of great room French doors, Brad, with Action Landscape, designed the backyard with trees creating a pergola with lots of shade for warm summer days. Through the kitchen is a butler's pantry that leads into a dining room fit for entertaining, lined with colorful Studio Four NYC wallpaper.

Upstairs,
there are three bedrooms and three bathrooms for the kids, with a vaulted family room with bunk beds and many windows. A back entrance from the 3-car garage makes it a multi-purpose space with the "flexibility to expand," says Jason. Downstairs, a full basement holds an exercise and an entertainment theater with a full bar, office, bedroom, and bathroom. Jason is happy the Eckmanns moved in, carrying out the team's plan. "We love it when homeowners take our vision and make it their own," he says. "The home, overall, is a great representation of how we try to think about how a family is going to live and grow in a home." Visit Artisan Signature Homes at artisansignaturehomes.com. Colvin, to Know: Kevin General Manager | Cornerstone Kitchen & Bath
PRO
With
an understanding that the kitchen is the heart of the home and the bath is the start of every great day, the Cornerstone Kitchen & Bath team design and install superior quality cabinetry, countertops, hardware, and more to fit any budget. General Manager Kevin Colvin helps guide the customer experience from the design phase to project completion, working with the best designers to provide top-notch service. “Our customer service experience is one of our leading assets,” says Cornerstone Kitchen & Bath Co-Owner Jeremy Curran. “There are lots of other cabinetry providers out there, but we pride ourselves on the entire design experience from start to finish. Our designers start the process of listening to the homeowner’s wants, needs, and specific utilization of the space being considered for remodeling. Then they custom design a space that fits those specific needs. We make sure they stay involved all the way through installation and that each and every member of our team is hands-on during the entire project.”
Kevin Colvin is, in many ways, the cornerstone of the Cornerstone Kitchen & Bath experience. He worked with Jeremy in event management for many years before Cornerstone’s inception in 2015. But along with his extensive customer service and management experience, Colvin brings a passion for woodworking and practical skills to the table.”I grew up watching my dad, who was a custom woodworker/cabinetmaker, create projects with just some measurements and an idea in his head. I have always had a passion for building unique things.” Colvin believes Cornerstone Kitchen & Bath is the perfect niche for him. Naturally, Colvin’s personal customer service and leadership philosophies align with those of Cornerstone owners Amy and Jeremy Curran. “I always work to complete each project with the client’s satisfaction in mind. While in these times, it may take some extra time to get what is needed, I have never left a project incomplete and always strive to exceed expectations with communication and follow-through to the best of my ability.” by Dawn Anderson

Teaming up with Cornerstone Kitchen & Bath designers means staying current with local kitchen and bath trends and larger-market and future trends that might eventually catch on in the Louisville area. “Over the past few years, we have seen more of a modern European open-concept look desired by customers. Larger markets are trending toward a clean, natural look with lots of stained wood in cabinetry for kitchens and baths, quartz backsplash in kitchens, and floating shelves are definitely trending.” Excited about his future with Cornerstone Kitchen & Bath, a highly successful local company, Colvin appreciates the day-to-day building of the business. “Every single project is different, so every day is different. I just really enjoy making customers happy about their decision to choose Cornerstone.” Colvin and the Currans agree – if you are considering a project, get started with them as soon as possible. According to Jeremy, “With increased lead times and no real end in sight to that changing, now is the time to start planning if you have a project in mind that you want to complete before the end of the year.” For more information, visit cornerstonekb.com. Green District
trio of former soccer players came up with the Green District concept as a healthy quick-service destination, with the St. Matthews and downtown Louisville locations opening in 2017. Green District makes its 13 dressings from scratch daily, setting it apart from local competitors. “We specialize in chopped salads with approachable ingredients,” says Rob Rice, Vice President of Operations & Food Innovation. “Customizable with over 50 ingredients, your salad is hand-chopped with a mezzaluna rocker knife. Every bite is a masterpiece. There is nothing quite like this. You get a healthy option that fits your budget and tastes great.” Can’t decide? No worries! Green District offers 12 salad combinations, including the superfood Kale Storm, Forbidden Fruit, Thai One On, Tequila Mockingbird, What About Cobb, and Hide & Go Greek. All salads are also available as a wrap. According to Rice, “Everything is intentionally on display to highlight the freshness of our ingredients. We provide an entire customer experience. With the quality of the nutrients and two-thirds of customers customizing salads, this concept is poised to scale nationally. We will be in six states with thirty units by the end of this year.” Louisville-area locations include St. Matthews, Downtown, Highlands, Middletown, Old Brownsboro Crossing, and Jeffersonville, Indiana. The company is looking to partner with small, local farms for leaf and head lettuces. “We are relentless about pursuing sustainability. Even with additions and upgrades to ingredient lists, Green District is committed to maintaining value for the customer. “We haven’t changed our prices or portion sizes, even as we navigate supply chain disruptions and inflationary impacts.” Previewing fall and winter at Green District: warm grain protein bowls with more grain and protein options. Current grain offerings are brown rice/quinoa blend and forbidden black rice. Visit gdsalads.com and follow @gdsalads on Facebook and Instagram. The Salad Chic

fter 25 years in the medical field, Tanya Mangrum has always been about the business of helping others. After a neurological incident following foot surgery, Mangrum had to go on medical leave for ten months. As the bills piled up, the single mother of four needed supplemental income to provide for her family. During the pandemic, she began making salads for her own health and as a healthy alternative to other homebased food businesses. Demand grew, and The Salad Chic gained a storefront in Shively. One year later, Mangrum opened a new, larger location in downtown Louisville. Mangrum’s entrepreneurial contribution to the local economy is significant in that she is the first single, Black woman in at least two states to open a restaurant of this kind. The Salad Chic has a recently revised menu, refreshed decor, and new employee uniforms. “It starts with freshness,” says Mangrum. “The daily produce is hand-picked by me and freshly cut each morning. Presentation and taste are everything.” The Build Your Own Salad is the cornerstone of The Salad Chic menu, with dozens of available ingredients, toppings, and dressings. Mangrum also recommends the Homemade Chicken Salad served on a croissant and TSC House Favorite Soup with shredded chicken, kale, and potatoes. Fresh Fruit Cups and Kabobs are refreshingly light dessert options. Mangrum’s children concoct delicious Energy Tea Drinks with Herbalife Nutrition formulas. The Salad Chic recently launched a new summer menu and expanded its hours to 9 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday. The latest offerings include açai bowls, yogurt, plant-based breakfast foods, high-protein wraps, and parfaits. For more information, visit thesaladchic.com. Vinaigrette Salad Kitchen

Flora Kitchenette
F
lora Kitchenette owners Nancy Smith and Jeremy Brown are Army veterans who have followed a plant-based diet for over twenty years. They began as vegetarians and turned to veganism just two months later. Jeremy lost 20-30 pounds in 60 days, his knee issues went away, and he had an overall improved sense of well-being. He and Nancy raised their children on plant-based foods. As the pandemic hit and the children reached adulthood, the couple began sharing recipes on social media through Sultra’s Vegan Kitchen concept. When Flora Kitchenette’s former owner closed up shop in late 2020, Nancy and Jeremy’s entrepreneurial spirits seized the opportunity. Their breakfast, lunch, and brunch restaurant uses fresh produce and organic ingredients, offering vegan options and gluten-free baked goods. Biscuits and Gravy, vegan biscuits “smothered in a savory mushroom gravy,” are available in half and full orders. The gluten-free Breakfast Taco Salad is romaine lettuce, tofu scrambles, black beans, pico, queso, avocado, and tomatoes, with Soyrizo available for $2 more. Glutenfriendly Classic Breakfast Tacos feature tofu scrambles, roasted potatoes, and seasoned black beans topped with queso and pico and served in corn tortillas. Choose from five Flora Kitchenette sourdough Toasts. BLTA Toast has vegan mayo, avocado, shredded lettuce, tomato, and tempeh bacon. The Avocado Toast is wellseasoned and topped with heirloom cherry tomatoes. Try Lox Toast with carrot lox and cream cheese. Tofu scrambles, mushroom, bell pepper, onion, and vegan cheese pile on the Loaded Scramble Toast. The Flower Child Toast gives elevated PB&J vibes with sunflower butter and strawberry jam. Flora Kitchenette is open Thursday through Monday with expanded summer hours of 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Join them for Bluegrass VegFest (bluegrassvegfest.com) at Mellwood Arts Center on July 9. JULY 2022 | TOPS Louisville
he Vinaigrette Salad Kitchen concept using local produce from Lexington farmers has grown over the past eight years to six locations, now including the Louisville and Cincinnati markets. At the end of April, the company celebrated five years in Louisville near the intersection of Hurstbourne Lane and Shelbyville Road. Regional Manager Ben Jones is excited at the company expanding in his hometown, with the recently opened Bardstown Road location and a third Louisville location coming soon to the Paddock Shops. Local chefs curate salads and dressings to elevate local produce. “Everything is made in-house,” says Jones. “All soups are from scratch, and dressings are specially created for each salad. Each salad is a complete meal that is filling but guiltfree, leaving you satisfied.” Jones recommends menu favorites for healthily celebrating summer. The lowest calorie option, the Chicken Taco salad, also happens to be gluten-free. This salad starts with a romaine and iceberg mix, topped with red onion, roasted chicken, black beans, grape tomatoes, crispy tortilla strips, and avocado cream. The accompanying Salsa Vinaigrette is only 50 calories per serving. The dairy-free and gluten-free Vegan Power salad features a spring mix with chopped superfood, quinoa, chickpeas, cucumbers, grape tomatoes, red peppers, sunflower seeds, and edamame with Creamy Lemon Vinaigrette. Be transported to Greece with the Santorini salad. A bed of chopped romaine is piled high with red onion, crumbled feta, quinoa, chickpeas, red peppers, grape tomatoes, cucumbers, and pita chips, all drizzled with lemon juice and olive oil. Containing the most Kentucky Proud™ ingredients is the popular Bluegrass Blackberry salad. Kight’s pecans and a Blackberry Sorghum Vinaigrette are the highlights, along with spring mix, red onion, crumbled feta, strawberries, and apple chips. For another taste of Kentucky, try the BLT Deluxe salad with Bourbon Smoked Paprika Ranch Dressing. ”Packed with nutrients,” the Harvest Kale salad is perfect for late summer transitioning into fall, with quinoa, sweet potatoes, parmesan, dried cranberries, sunflower seeds, pita chips, and Honey Balsamic Vinaigrette. Vinaigrette Salad Kitchen also offers carry-out and catering. For more information, visit vinaigrettesaladkitchen.com and follow @vinaigrettesalads on Instagram.
Safier Mediterranean Deli
S
afier Mediterranean Deli opened in Louisville in 2002 as a halal restaurant serving delicious fare from the Middle East. Owner and Head Chef Youness El Mesyah took over in 2016 and gave the restaurant, branding, and website a fresh new look. The primarily Lebanese menu with Indian specials is not only a draw downtown but a destination for customers throughout metro Louisville. El Mesyah came to the US in 2011 at 20 years old and started working in Louisville restaurants. The restaurant’s recipes reflect his upbringing in the Moroccan countryside and are all made from scratch and cooked fresh to order daily. “We use healthy ingredients - olive oil, fresh herbs and spices, chickpeas, lentils, good quality rice, halal chicken breast, with very few fried items.” El Mesyah treats his employees as family and supports them however he can, including offering free food to them and others in the community during Ramadan. Among the many salads, vegetarian options, and entrees on the lighter side, El Mesyah highlights the most popular healthy choices. Hummus made from chickpeas, garlic, lemon, and tahini (sesame sauce) is served with fresh pita bread from a local bakery. The world-famous Lebanese Tabbouleh salad has cracked wheat, diced tomatoes, onion, parsley, and lemon. Try the Greek Salad with ripe black olives, feta cheese, and house dressing. Fried onions and yogurt sauce top the Mujadara lentils and rice. The Chicken Shawarma entree is beloved with grilled chicken breast marinated in light spices with a side of garlic sauce. All Main Dishes are served with House Salad, basmati rice, and pita. Substitute hummus, Greek Salad, or Tabbouleh for $1. Daily Lunch Specials add variety with dishes like Chicken Tikka Masala, Korma, and Saag, Chicken or Lamb Biryani, and Lamb Shank. Safier Mediterranean Deli offers carryout, downtown delivery, and third-party delivery through DoorDash® and Postmates. Let Safier Mediterranean Deli cater your next event! From light, refreshing seltzers and cocktails to its cool, vibrant space in NuLu Marketplace, The Local Seltzery is the place to be this summer. If you have ever been disappointed by trendy canned seltzers that taste like the flavor was whispered from another room, Braxton and Clay Turner’s seltzery concept will surprise and delight your senses. Originally from Lexington, the Turner brothers lived and worked in different states during the pandemic when they noticed changes in their habits and behaviors, as well as increased drinking by the general population.
Braxton Turner was a Jimmy John’s franchisee in South Carolina, and Clay was (and still is) a Boston neurologist. With their combination of customer service, food and beverage, and health backgrounds, they began to conceive an on-premise place to capitalize on the growing hard seltzer trend. With so many brands on the market, Braxton

and Clay looked for ways to distinguish themselves, including handcrafting seltzers and riding the new wave of popularity enjoyed by vodka-based seltzers such as High Noon.
The location was the next piece of the puzzle. With only three other seltzeries in the United States at the time - Charlotte, Denver, and Seattle - the Turner brothers looked closer to their old home where they had grown up and attended college. “Louisville is the larger city and a big drinking city with distilleries and breweries,” says Braxton. “Louisville, Kentucky, would be home to the only vodkabased seltzery.” NuLu was the perfect neighborhood with its diversity and proximity to potential community partners, restaurants, and shops. After extensive research and testing, Braxton and Clay had found a combination of all-natural flavors, premium spirits, and pure seltzer water to deliver the
cleaner, crisper, refreshing taste and finish they desired. According to Braxton, “We sell premium seltzers, but not at a premium price, featuring Tito’s Handmade Vodka.” Tito’s is not only the bestselling vodka brand in the US but is now the top-selling distilled spirit. While proudly serving alcoholic beverages, The Local Seltzery offers non-alcoholic versions of most seltzer drinks. The Craft Vodka Seltzers featuring Tito’s Handmade Vodka are all-natural, under 100 calories, low-carb, gluten-free, and vegan. The vodka base is more refreshing than the typical malt or beer-based commercial seltzers. “Try our higher-quality product with unique, craft flavors that are healthier without sacrificing taste.” The ambiance and service at The Local Seltzery are as bubbly as the beverages. The patio up front leads through a roll-up garage door to a welcoming and warm atmosphere. “Our goal was to bring the outdoors indoors. The decor uses light, bright colors, and lighting reminiscent of stars and globes for a refreshing, clean feel as embodied in the drinks.” The upstairs mezzanine is available for private events with no rental fee, only a minimum drink spend for up to 30 guests. Begin your seltzery experience with an $8 Flight of three Craft Vodka Seltzers. You might try the newest flavors first. Watermelon Sugar (Watermelon-Kiwi) is “The perfect drink for summer evenings. If I get the song stuck in your head, sorry not sorry.” Honey-boo (HoneydewBlack Raspberry) is “The right balance of sweet and sass.” Cotton Candy is “Bold and sweet with hints of raspberry. All the nostalgia without the clowns and carnies.” Peaches Ain’t Sh*t and Main Squeeze (Pink Lemonade) are under 75 calories each! Any flavor TLS Tito’s Shot is $6. Seltzer Cocktails feature Tito’s Handmade Vodka, bourbon, tequila, or champagne. Harlow’s Home with vodka is “A poppin’ tropical cocktail inspired by Louisville’s own.” Braxton recommends the crisp Seltzer Mule this summer, “An elevation of the gingery favorite, with fewer cals and carbs. Less AND more. *Available with vodka or tequila!” Daily Happy Hour rotating drink specials are available at 25% off until 6 pm. The Local Seltzery also offers rotating local draft beer, assorted Froggy’s Gourmet Popcorn flavors, and cheese and charcuterie boxes. Patrons of The Local Seltzery are welcome to bring food in from other establishments as well. Enjoy events such as Sunday Pups on the Patio, benefiting Kentucky Humane Society™, and Wednesday Trivia. ormer cattle farmer Rudy Leake has taken his passions for the beef industry, farming, and the finer things in life and transformed them into a thriving business in the heart of Lexington. VanMeter James, a newly opened Boutique Butcher shop in Downtown Lexington, provides only the top cuts of Certified Angus Beef® – and other great meats – to its customers... anywhere in the Continental US. As Rudy’s children grew, the father of two realized he and his family needed to be closer to the city. He sold his cattle and to continue following his passion, opened a butcher shop. Rudy says what makes his shop special is the unique, personable details and the people that make up the business. VanMeter James is actually named after Leake’s two children, while the company’s logo is written in his own handwriting.

The men who work for Leake have experienced the patience and the want for quality products it takes to learn more about the beef industry, and according to Leake, each has done an incredible job even when coming from various backgrounds. Along with those he works with in the shop, Rudy attributes much of the shop’s success to he and his wife’s hard work. He says their both their personal and professional growth together over the past eight years has allowed him to be in the position he is today. All of that is fun for Rudy, but his main goal is to expose Certified Angus Beef® and their brands, like Teakhaus cutting boards and Miyabi Steak Knives, to a wider audience. He enjoys the experience of getting a steak in front of someone, with his favorite cuts being either the Certified Angus Beef® Bone In Filet or the Certified Angus Beef® Brand Prime Kansas City Steak. He claims leaving the bone on the filet takes its tenderness to another level, while leaving the bone in the KC Strip allows for a wellmarbled, tender piece of steak. Another factor making this butcher shop unique is the aging process of the meat.

All of their steaks are wet aged for 28 days and hand cut to specific thickness. Leake initially wanted to start with basics you typically see on steakhouse menus, but has since expanded his product line. He now offers lamb, Berkshire pork, duck, veal, salmon and crab. That's all in addition to their wonderful premium steaks. The business has found a way to take a portion of its profits and give them to charity. A dollar from every sale made goes to the Mick Colvin Scholarship fund, giving students who are pursuing a degree in agricultural studies money toward their education. Is Rosé Over? 108
JULY 2022 | TOPS Louisville
If you thought "rosé all day" was over, think again, honey. While rosé is particularly popular in the warm-weather months, more and more consumers are becoming open to the idea of drinking rosé in the winter due to its stylistic ambiguity. Within the past few years, rosé sales have been catching up to those of red wine, with the wines’ brighter acidity, lower alcohol content, undetectable tannins, and versatility when it comes to food. Rosé can go with almost anything, from charcuterie and pasta to shellfish and spicy Asian noodles. Contrary to popular belief (a.k.a what I thought before researching rosé styles), most modern rosé wines are dry. Though each wine is different, strawberries and cherries are commonly found flavors in both dry and sweet rosé. From sweet, sparkling bubbles to dry Côtes de Provence, transport yourself to the south of France with these pretty in pink picks.
Mateus Dry Rosé Produced in Portugal, this dry, yet refreshing, rosé will make you feel like you’re enjoying a summer sunset at the beach. It’s well-balanced, rare blend of Baga, Rufete, Tinta Barroca, and Touriga Franca grape varieties produce a slightly fizzy liquid with notes of strawberry, raspberry, citrus, and vanilla.

Chateau d'Escl s Whisper g Angel When searching for tasty rose options, I saw this wine repeatedly. According to Spruce Eats, this French wine embodies everything that a great rosé should, and is the benchmark of the style. I don’t know about you, but I already want to pour myself a glass. This rosé has a dry and crisp profile typical of the French region, with bright notes of lemon, cantaloupe, orange blossom, and peaches, a stark difference from our previous options. Enjoy with your next meal or even on its own. photo courtesy Chateau d’Esclans

Bei ima Sparkl g Rosé If you’re searching for an organic, vegan option, Bellissima Sparkling Rosé is for you. Made from 100% organic Pinot Grigio grapes in Veneto, Italy, this elegant, light-bodied wine offers hints of strawberry and grapefruit with a soft foam. Pair with smoked salmon or seafood hor d'oeuvres and enjoy!

Ultimate Pr ence Coming straight from the Côtes de Provence region of France, this rosé dawns both a beautiful bottle and a pale pink color. It is made from Syrah, Cinsault, Grenache Noir, and Rolle, resulting in peachy notes, along with ginger, neroli, and jasmine. The unique combination gives this wine a spicy touch that also lends notes of winter citrus.

Prieure De Mоtezargues Tavel This rosé, though we’re not quite sure how to pronounce its name, is a great option for you who enjoy sipping on a sweeter wine. Unlike our other options that contain mostly flavors from red berries, this Tavel has distinct notes of persisting citrus (and berries of course). Round out your summer wine collection with this delicious, rich selection.

erving over 4000 children and families each year, Family & Children’s Place has operated in the Louisville area since 1883. Founded as the Charity Organization Society, the agency eventually got its name from the merger of Family Place and Family & Children First in 2008. CEO/President Pam Darnall has served the non-profit for over 27 years and assumed her current role in late 2013. Governor Beshear held a ceremonial bill signing on campus recently following Family & Children’s Place's significant legislative advocacy. “Family & Children’s Place serves family needs and prevents child abuse. We also stop abuse when it happens and provide healing and recovery. Our five services help parents to recognize their strengths as they manage the challenges of parenting, raising healthy babies and children.” HANDS supports expecting and new parents to navigate the challenges of parenthood by offering community resources, parenting activities, and information through home visits, assessments, and ongoing services. Greater Louisville Head Start helps pregnant mothers and children up to age five prepare for school success. Parents and collaborative community partners are critical to the success of these programs. School-based services provide programming at Engelhard Elementary and Meyzeek Middle School in Louisville
and Hazelwood Middle School in New Albany, Indiana. The Kosair Charities Child Advocacy Center (CAC) is the third-largest in Kentucky, and helps children and youth impacted by child sexual abuse and human trafficking. A nationally-recognized model, the CAC and staff “are colocated with LMPD’s Crimes Against Children Unit, child protective services, prosecutors, medical experts, and mental health clinicians.” Family & Children’s Place counseling services are “bestin-class,” licensed and certified to help heal the effects of child abuse, family violence, and trauma. Specialized individual, family, group, and school-based counseling and interventions are available at no cost to victims and families. But Family & Children’s Place is unable to serve all children and families who are referred due to current workforce capacity challenges resulting from a lack of funding for services. Some funding has been significantly reduced and some eliminated altogether. Medicaid reimbursements and other federal funding have not kept pace with actual costs for decades, resulting in an inability to recruit and retain staff. those of us who are canine lovers, it’s no surprise to hear of programs utilizing dogs and animals for therapy. In the 1800s Florence Nightingale noted the connection small animals had with patents in recovery.1 In the 1930s Sigmund Freud utilized his own dog for his psychiatric practice and in 1976, the first therapy dog organization was formed to observe the positive affects of dogs in hospitals by Elaine Smith.2,3 The growth of this practice has continued and now it’s increasing the quality of life for our Heroes here in the Louisville and Southern Indiana Region.
Since 2013, Dogs Helping Heroes (DHH) has been gifting military veterans and first responders with trained service dogs. Their constant inspiration is to improve the lives of disabled military veterans, wounded first responders and Gold Star families. It all began with a trained service dog given to an Iraqi War veteran injured by an improvised explosive device (IED) during combat. The veteran was exhibiting post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms that created anxiety and panic, affecting his abilities to function in a normal capacity away from home. These symptoms also had a significant effect on the entire

transformation of this veteran thanks to the emotional and physical support of Major.
“Many times our heroes can’t unsee, unhear, or undo memories from their training or active combat situations and these service dogs become their battle buddies,” states Kassi Cawood, DHH Board Chair. “They can be extremely helpful with relieving panic and anxiety as well mobility and stability issues. For example having their six while standing in line at the pharmacy. The dog can let them know when somebody is walking up behind and helps with staying focused on their task.”
The support of the service dogs has assisted in restoring a sense of lost freedom and purpose while also providing the much needed physical support for our heroes. “These dogs often times provide the recipient new life and a purpose to live,” remarks Kassi.
The co-founder of Dogs Helping Heroes, David Benson, had 13 years of professional dog training experience. He provided special training for Major to enable him to alert, protect, support and soothe the veteran at home and in public. He was able to see first hand the amazing

Donnie Adkins Conversation Piece:

W
est Louisville is experiencing another “Harlem Renaissance” in the Russell neighborhood, and Donnie Adkins, owner of Club Cedar and Joe’s Palm Room, is King of the revitalized social scene. Through Parkland to the southwest of the Russell neighborhood is where Donnie Adkins grew up: Park DuValle, initially known as “Little Africa” and then “Southwick” during his time there. “We grew up really poor, but I always knew I would be successful.” Adkins recalls nice cars rolling into Southwick every Saturday to help with community projects. “I told my teachers I wanted to be a banker because the bank is where all the money is.” The accidental purchase of a Master P album in 1993 spurred Adkins’ ambitions even further. Three years earlier, Master P’s grandfather had been killed in a tragic workplace accident. Percy Miller, aka Master P, flipped his $10,000 malpractice insurance settlement and two years’ worth of junior college business education into a Bay Area record store. The record store business evolved into the record label No Limit Records, and Master P has a current estimated net worth of nearly $250 million. Donnie Adkins attended Southern High School, got into trouble, and in 1997 graduated from Jefferson County High School. His first real job after high school was with Frito-Lay, but recovery from a car accident forced him out of work. At 19, Adkins began working maintenance for Louisville’s housing authority, “But I knew I still wanted to be an entrepreneur and make more money.” So, along with his two best friends, he enrolled in the National College of Business, where all three would graduate at the top of their class. “I quickly realized an Associate Degree didn’t really move the needle.” Adkins attended night classes in Business Administration at Sullivan University and earned a promotion to Section 8 Ombudsman with Louisville Metro Government’s Office of Housing and Community Development. In 2006, he received his MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University and began working in supply chain and procurement at Humana. Adkins and some Humana colleagues attended Men’s Monday at Club Cedar, discussing local issues and “solving the world’s problems” still in suits and ties. He told his friends, “If this place ever comes up for sale, I’m buying it.” Dave Duncan offered to get in on the act as Kitchen Manager. In June 2011, Adkins moved to Indianapolis as Supplier Diversity Manager for IU Health. He met his future wife, Kandis, who was completing her Anesthesiologist residency. In 2013, they moved to Louisville, where Donnie worked for RSCS/Yum! Brands, Papa John’s International, and started Adkins & Adkins LLC. Donnie and Dr. Kandis L. Adkins were married that October.
In 2015, just as Adkins quit his job to pursue real estate opportunities full-time, Louisville Metro Government’s Housing Program Supervisor position became available. After three years, he asked Kandis if she’d mind if he quit, to which she replied, “I don’t know why you took that job in the first place.” The Turner family was finally ready to sell Club Cedar by December 2020. “They trusted that I was the one to take it to the next level.” Adkins describes Club Cedar as the neighborhood Cheers. The bartenders have remained in place for 12-25 years and are known for serving “the best drinks in town.” Adkins has upgraded the food and beverage menus to include Blackowned bourbon selections and passes vendor deals on beer and wine to customers. He hears customer suggestions and takes action. Club Cedar now has a blacktop parking lot, a new commercial HVAC system, pristine bathrooms, a renovated commercial kitchen, and proper floors, doors, and windows. This past October, Club Cedar hosted a performance by R&B/Soul legend Lenny Williams. The legendary Joe’s Palm Room originally opened in 1954. It quickly became “the place to be” for locals who hoped to run into visiting celebrities like Joe Louis, Dizzy Gillespie, Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor, or Muhammad Ali. Namesake owner Joe Hammond passed away in 1997, and the jazz club closed some years later. In September 2020, it reopened briefly as The Palm Room before Adkins, Butch Mosby, and Victor Sandusky took over the fully renovated space and restored the original name. They reopened Joe’s Palm Room in January 2022 and recently hired a new Beverage Director and a Chef for sophisticated food pairings. “Even at 44 years old, I have had to grow up even more in the last two years,” says Adkins. “Knowing what not to change is just as important. How do I make money, make everyone feel at home, and progress in the 21st century? It is a challenge every single day, and safety in the city is a concern. Continuing to bring in these classic soul artists requires a security presence. We must be very cognizant and not blind to what could happen.” Despite its challenges, Adkins finds business ownership rewarding. Adkins hosts financial and real estate education events at Club Cedar and his cryptocurrency event with Lamar Wilson was a sell-out. He says, “I am a role model using my platform to educate. People are watching me. I’m under a microscope, so it’s all on the up-and-up with nothing to hide.” Visit thepalmroomlounge.com and follow @ClubCedar on Facebook.

After
Daisy Kinney had a negative experience with lip fillers, she knew she could do better. “A while after that first experience, a friend injected my lips, and I loved the result and the confidence it gave me.” Being a nurse for over 15 years and a Nurse Anesthetist/Advanced practice nurse practitioner for over 11 years, Daisy was confident she could make the transition into aesthetics in addition to her pediatric anesthesia. Daisy founded The Aesthetic Collective to give her clients natural results with safety in mind. "Aging is a given," she says. "My clients can define what aging gracefully means to them. We provide all-natural antiaging services with their own platelet-rich plasma or more synthetically derived products that have been proven safe for decades. They will be surprised what just one change such as using actual medical grade products will do for their collagen production." In the future, Daisy will be adding esthetician services and provide more spa-like services. "Until now, we have focused on only providing the treatments that yield results. However, we understand that some clients like to have a relaxing exfoliating facial or a hydrating facial that will help them maintain the other results from our more aggressive treatments."
