Breast Implant Monitoring

MANY PATIENTS ASK ABOUT WHEN THEIR BREAST IMPLANTS SHOULD BE REPLACED. Happily, there is no time-based replacement need. And, this is true regardless of whether the implants are saline filled or silicone gel filled. However, there are reasons for replacement due both to implant factors and the patient’s body. A leak is the primary implant-related reason for replacement. The implants age as the patient ages. And, let’s face it, nothing lasts forever. For most types of implants, the leak rate is 0.5-2% per year.

free silicone. Capsular contracture creates firmness and sometimes shape distortion of the breast and is therefore obvious to the patient. However, contracture can occur in the absence of a leak, so it is not a specific indicator of a leak.

THE FDA RELEASED NEW GUIDELINES FOR MONITORING SILICONE IMPLANTS IN LATE 2021. An ultrasound study is recommended 5-6 years after implant placement. Thereafter, ultrasounds are recommended every 2-3 years. MRI remains the gold standard test to determine silicone implant integrity.

The most common cause of implant leak is fold flaw. Essentially, the implant gets a small fold in it which the patient cannot feel. As the patient moves, the fold creates a weak point in the wall of the implant and eventually the edges rub a hole in themselves.

IF A LEAK IS DIAGNOSED, THE IMPLANT(S) SHOULD BE REPLACED.

A LEAK IS USUALLY OBVIOUS FOR SALINE IMPLANTS.

There is no way to fix a leaking implant other than replacement. Your American Board of Plastic Surgery certified surgeon can help with concerns about breast implants.

Saline inside the implant leaks out and the breast size decreases. Although slow leaks can occur, it is much more common for the implant to deflate over a few hours, days or weeks. Most silicone implant leaks are “silent” meaning the patient is not aware a leak is occurring. It is important to note that a silent leak is not dangerous to the patient’s health. However, if allowed to persist, problems can develop within the breast including capsular contracture and granuloma formation. Granulomas are scar nodules the body builds up to wall off

One

of our city’s cutest architectural styles is a charming asset to our lush neighborhoods. Bungalows pack a lot of flair into a small space. From quaint cottages to funky beach-inspired verandas, these homes bring lots of character to their surroundings. As people seek to get the most out of every square foot of their homes, it’s worth considering the benefits of bungalow living. by Amanda Harper

w o l a g n u

B

the

What is a bungalow? The first “bungalow” was built in 1869 in England. When it came to the United States in the early 1900s, this style was initially used for vacation homes, eventually showing up as homes built in the Arts & Crafts style. Many of Kentucky's bungalows date back to the 1920s. These small homes are generally designed as “one and a half” stories with a small loft in a sloping roof, often under a dormer. The main living areas are all on the first level, making these homes ideal for smaller families or people with mobility concerns. People who are downsizing often look at bungalows as the perfect compromise for low-worry living. What sets them apart from a ranch is that half story. A new construction bungalow will often cost more than a traditional ranch. The foundation must be built to support the extra weight and the roof pitch tends to be higher. Bungalows are often built with large verandas, which make these homes so much fun in the summertime.

PLAN 23-2737 houseplans.com

It’s easy to think of a bungalow as a simple rectangle with a dormer on top. But the possibilities for bungalow configurations are just about limitless, as this floorplan illustrates. The addition of wings, garages, porches and more offer you countless ways to personalize your bungalow layout. The commitment to getting the most out of the space is really evident. From the mudroom to the open liivng/ kitchen/dining room, it's easy to see how the architects

34

worked as much utility as possible into the square footage available. We love the master suite, which has you walk through the his and hers closet to get to the master bath. The options to customize this floorplan are just as impressive. You could easily extend the covered porch or give the living room some extra space. If you wanted a more spacious entryway, the office/den could be removed to create an informal sitting area instead of the smaller foyer and hallway.

PLAN 120-187 houseplans.com

y l i m Fa y l d n Frie This floorplan definitely prioritizes outdoor living. A porch, side porch (with a swing) and lanai offer lots of space for sitting on nice days. That said, the inside layout is configured for a family. The foyer opens into a family room that serves as the heart of the house. The kitchen and dining nook are perfectly placed for carrying groceries in from the garage. The bedrooms are all on one side, which is common for "ranch-style" bungalows.

Something Special PLAN 928-304 houseplans.com

The most interesting bungalows make use of their surroundings. This unique floorplan offers its occupants a view in just about every direction. That also means that it catches natural light at every time of day. Curb appeal is always worth creating. The angled front porch invites guests in while providing the residents with a comfortable place to sit and relax. It also affords lots of interesting opportunities for landscaping! This home was clearly designed with enjoyment in mind. The sun room adjoins both the living room and master bedroom, allowing everyone the chance to take in the view. If we could change one thing, we'd move the laundry room into the garage to make the entry a little more grand.

DRIVING FORWARD PAUL MILLER MOTOR COMPANY'S COMMUNITY LEGACY CONTINUES by Peter Chawaga | photos by Keni Parks Since 1953, the Paul Miller Motor Company has been helping those throughout Central Kentucky get where they need to go, providing high-quality vehicles and complementary services at fair and affordable prices. It has been locally owned for three generations, proudly selling new vehicles at Paul Miller Ford and Paul Miller Mazda, while also offering hundreds of pre-owned vehicles at the Paul Miller Auto Outlet. And, through it all, it has stayed true to its foundational values: active community involvement, unmatched customer service and utmost care for its employees.

FROM MAIN STREET TO ALL STREETS The legacy began nearly seven decades ago when Paul E. Miller, universally known as “Mr. Miller,” purchased a Ford dealership on Lexington’s Main Street, instilling the nascent business as well as its future growth with a hands-

on approach that has been central to its success and the satisfaction of its customers ever since. “Mr. Miller led his dealership by example, taking time every day to build relationships with both customers and employees,” explained the team at Paul Miller Motor Company, which has a palpable appreciation for its own history. “Since the dealership’s inception, Mr. Miller understood that Paul Miller Ford’s success was deeply tied to the community and he established long-lasting relationships with community partners, like the University of Kentucky’s athletics program.” Building upon Mr. Miller’s legacy, John Paul Miller, Sr. grew the business exponentially while retaining the community partnerships it had established, coining a name for this empire that Lexingtonians will still recognize today: “Kentucky’s Big One.”

SPONSORED CONTENT | April 2022

Today, J.P. Miller, Jr. has guided the dealership to meet the needs and challenges inherent in the twenty-first century automotive industry, while still hosting and sponsoring dozens of community events every year. “Nearly 70 years since its founding, the dealership has evolved into the Paul Miller Motor Company, a 27-acre campus with three dealerships, an upfitting service, an auto glass repair company, dent repair service and truck service,” the company team explained. “Today, its legacy continues with an award-winning dealership focusing on customer service and community involvement.”

DRIVING LEGACY FORWARD WITH PAUL MILLER MAZDA Looking back, perhaps one of the Paul Miller Motor Company's most critical additions was the opening of Lexington’s Paul Miller Mazda in 1980. Overseen by Mr. Miller, the goal was to merge the Japanese automaker’s innovations and quality vehicles with Paul Miller Motor Company’s strong community focus. In the years since, it’s clear that goal has been met. Paul Miller Mazda has won the Mazda Gold Cup, an award given to select dealers based on sales and customer service. And it also maintains the Mazda Drive For Good Program, which continues to give back to the local community. Now, Paul Miller Mazda is adding new services to better meet the needs of drivers in Lexington and the surrounding areas, and to propel economic development with new jobs through the Mazda Retail Evolution. “The Retail Evolution Program should look very familiar,” explained the Paul Miller team. “It stands out on New Circle Road and it's as dynamic as the original building. But we’ve modified it to appeal to a more alternative or premium customer.” The brand new, state-of-the-art Mazda dealership’s corrugated metal has been replaced with a smooth panel, its drive canopy has been removed and its colors have been carefully modulated, with a heavy use of black, white and natural wood framing. A large bank of video screens integrates a flicker of activity from the outside, drawing customers to a bold entryway where they are greeted by a concierge. The showrooms are divided into individual studios that help customers appreciate each vehicle, creating a more premium experience. A technology-enabled customer lounge allows for quick access to the showroom, sales division and service write-up areas, while customers are offered entertainment

options, complimentary beverages and snacks, comfortable chairs and access ports for their personal electronics while seamlessly being kept up to date on their wait times. Consultation stations have been grouped together beyond the gallery showrooms and a visual hierarchy has been brought to life there. The open and airy zone hosts the dealership’s sales managers and consultants. Proximity to the service write up area reinforces the fact that Mazda stands firmly behind its products, bringing the customers back to the same place where they first purchased their lifetime vehicles. Finally, a merchandise boutique and vehicle accessory area highlights featured parts and accessories, displayed as vignettes in a flexible system that can be placed in multiple configurations, creating a store within a store. “We hope that you can join us and share the message that it’s time to build,” said J.P. Miller, Jr. “We have all had a long year, but after four decades this Mazda dealership is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of home that we can build in times of trouble, that we can use to create jobs and a level of customer satisfaction that sets a new standard in buying and servicing your transportation needs, that will help us all feel alive.”

THE COMMUNITY GREEN LIGHT Across so many decades, with so much growth and innovation, it might have been easy for Paul Miller Motor Company to lose sight of the focus that got it to where it is today. But, rather than lose that focus, the business has doubled down on its community partnerships and emphasis on the region it calls home. “We’ve stayed very committed to giving back to our community,” said J.P. Miller, Jr. “That’s been a part of our family for a long time, and it’s in the DNA of our company.” This commitment is demonstrated in Miller’s support of the University of Kentucky, which has only grown stronger in recent years. Those in Lexington may already be familiar with the commercials and social media videos starring three university head coaches. The dealership’s current tagline, “Your True Blue Dealer,” is a nod to its membership in Big Blue Nation. “The dealership’s commitment to customer service hasn’t changed under J.P. Miller,” the team explained. “Today’s Paul Miller Motor Company is devoted to providing a five-star experience to every customer and continuing to build relationships with every person who walks through the door.”

RATTAN

What goes around comes around, and rattan has fully made its way back into our hearts and homes. The 70s are making a comeback in more ways than one, with rattan furniture standing at the top of the list. Whether you’re Miss modern minimalism or have decor everywhere you look, rattan can be paired with any home style to create a look any of the Golden Girls would swoon over. Rattan’s light, golden color can transform a dark, dingy space into a bohemian oasis, tropical paradise, a shabby-chic dream, or whatever style you’re trying to achieve in your home or outdoor environment. It’s proof that the grandmillenial style is here to stay for the moment. Who wouldn’t want to snuggle up in a rattan chair that reminds them of their Partridge-inspired childhood room, but in a trendy, stylish way? Rattan may have gotten tucked away in the corner of the local thrift store for years, but the multiple $300 plus rattan Peacock chairs we’ve seen on Facebook Marketplace would suggest the material is in high demand. Sleep better with a painted rattan headboard, act as queen at your dining table with a Peacock chair, or fulfill your long-awaited dream of swinging from the ceiling in a hanging chair. Even though rattan may be a hot commodity, keep an eye out at estate sales, garage sales, and thrift stores, where you can score a deal and bring vintage pieces back to life.

BOONE CONTRACTING 859.252.1889 boonecontractingky.com

Founded by Lexington native Jarrod Gabbard, Boone Contracting has been designing and building dream home concepts since 2016. Its team offers clients a turn-key, boutique contracting experience that sees its full staff of designers, tradespeople, managers and more turn dreams into realities. “One project in particular comes to mind when describing a beautiful example of Boone Contracting’s work,” explained Gabbard. “In this case, a stunning bathroom was created from a reading nook in the master suite of a Chevy Chase home. With gold in-lay tile, heated floors and a soaker tub with a view, this project had it all! That is the kind of dream that we can turn into a reality for clients.” Ultimately, that project — as with all of Boone Contracting’s work — was guided with the fundamental desire that the firm has to turn homes into reflections of their clients’ own personalities and aspirations. “Our approach to your design project captures your personal style and touches that are relevant to you,” Gabbard said. “We want your new home design to work for the family’s everyday needs.”

Neutrals and Natural Materials If there’s one thing we know for certain, it’s that neutrals never go out of style. This year, homeowners are reaching for classic shades like beige, cream, gray, and brown with warm undertones to cover their walls. We’re also seeing natural earth colors such as green and terracotta as a base to create something eye-catching by layering in more vibrant colors. People are also aiming for longevity and timelessness in their home spaces. Organic materials such as clay, natural wood, stone, rattan, and brick help create a zen-like feeling in your home. To add more interest to a calming canvas, you can blend your neutrals with furniture or decorative elements that contain jewel tones, trees, curved furniture, and statement art. West Elm 68

Vintage

Textiles

If you haven’t already noticed, vintage is making a huge comeback in about every category of life, home decor included. Because of supply shortages and homeowners becoming increasingly more sustainable, vintage furniture has become a popular option when decorating the home. Vintage furniture is not only sustainable, but it allows your personality to shine through in your home. There’s a past with this type of furniture, and many pieces have intricate, personal details that can’t be recreated.

To balance out your neutrals, you’re going to need a little bit of texture… or a lot of texture! Velvet, sherpa, fringe, and boucle are all fabric options that can make a space feel and look luxurious. Maybe we’ve spent too much time at home during the pandemic, but cozy fabrics and materials are a must in every room this year.

Going vintage doesn’t mean we’re going full-on grandma, though. We’re going to see a mix of old and new: an eclectic barrel back chair paired with contemporary artwork, for example. A fun aspect about going with vintage goods is the certainty that none of your neighbors will own the same piece! You can score unique furniture, textiles, and accessories at local thrift stores, flea markets, estate sales, repurposed furniture stores, or even Facebook Marketplace.

It may seem daunting to add texture to your home for fear of overdoing it, but it can be as simple as layering different fabrics on your bed. Clean, plain base fabrics allow you to layer chunky knit throws with tweeds and jacquards or a velvet duvet cover with leather pillows. Once you’ve decided on materials, pile up those pillows and drape a blanket across the foot of your bed to create a comfy, cozy, chic bedroom.

Bold Tones Even though we’re focusing on neutral tones as a base layer, we’re still embracing color! Just like adding vintage pieces of furniture, eye-catching colors allow your personality and individuality to shine through in your home. Bright, mid-century hues are making a comeback, such as orange-tinged reds, jewel-toned greens, dusty blues, terracotta pinks, and buttery yellows. Consider color psychology: green hues radiate comfort and safety, while pinks promote warmth and kindness. If you’re not one for bright pops of color, black accents and hardware can add edge and depth to minimalistic spaces. Choose light, airy colors for main elements like sofas, paint color, and chairs, but swap that gold floor mirror for a black one. This will provide for a pop of contrast without taking away from your overall vibe of refinement.

Versatile Spaces and Furniture

If you’re a plant parent, this trend goes out to you. We’re all craving a stronger connection with the outside world. That’s why we’re seeing more green hues, nature-themed spaces, and, of course, more plants! Houseplants promote clean air and have a calming effect in whatever room they’re placed in. Many popular plants, including monsteras (the swiss cheese plant) and pothos, are relatively easy-going and don’t require constant care.

Multifunctional spaces are hot in 2022, with many individuals continuing to work or attend school from home. Being stuck at home for so long made people realize how they could add more functionality to a space. For smaller areas, furniture that offers multiple functions is ideal, like an ottoman that can be used for extra seating or an additional side table.

Studies have shown that houseplants have various benefits, from air purification to reducing stress and increasing creativity and productivity. If that’s not enough to convince you to become a horticulture enthusiast, they also create an aesthetically soft, natural space while accenting signature pieces, leaving you with a visual connection to nature. More trending plants for 2022 include parlour palms, foliage houseplants, and the beautiful Alcoasia Silver Dragon. Now I’ve got myself wanting to go buy more plants!

Consider rearranging furniture and décor by function and move similarly functioning pieces to separate areas. This will allow for more space and functionality in your home – and it may be your new favorite setup! Smart furniture designed with multiple functions in mind or shelving that can open and reveal a TV, for example, can provide style and beauty for your home, but functionality as well.

Gardening is a delight… sometimes. There’s nothing worse than falling for Kentucky’s infamous spring bait-and-switch: the perfect day for planting presents itself only to be followed by a surprise cold snap that ruins all your hard work. Timing is crucial for would-be green thumbs. Setting your plants out at the correct time ensures a long growing or blooming season while still avoiding the dreaded wilt and burn of a tricky frost. Old timers say that you should wait to plant tender seedlings and delicate annuals until either after Derby day or Mother’s Day (with the latter being the safe bet). While that’s absolutely good advice, there is still much to be done in the garden before that magic date...

Early April ◊ Transplant large trees and shrubs ◊ Prune evergreens ◊ Plant fruit trees and shrubs ◊ If you fertilize your lawn, use a spring-type ◊ Rotate indoor plants

Mid-April ◊ Spread high nitrogen fertilizer around evergreens ◊ Plant summer flowering bulbs ◊ Plant annual seeds ◊ Plant root crops ◊ Plant peas, cauliflower, cabbage, beets, carrots, etc.

Spring Sprouts! Don't get fooled by Kentucky's cold snaps...

Late April/Early May ◊ Deadhead spring flowering bulbs ◊ Prune forsythia once it has finished flowering ◊ Divide perennials ◊ Fertilize roses ◊ Set aquatic plants ◊ Plant beans and corn

Once the Danger of Frost Has Passed (Second week or so of May) ◊ Transplant your seedlings! ◊ Plant summer flowering bulbs (Cannas must wait until now) ◊ Plant summer flowering perennials ◊ Plant hearty annuals ◊ Stake tall flowers ◊ Control slugs and snails ◊ Get weeding! ◊ Most summer vegetables can be planted now. Wait another week for tomatoes, squash, cucumbers and peppers.

Granny's inheritance just came through... we're celebrating a design sensibility that's built on breathing new life into the "outdated" while gleefully embracing "more is more..." by Amanda Harper

TOPSinLex.com | April 2022

93

Millennials have been accused of “killing” everything from the diamond industry to fabric softener. But one thing they have resurrected? Granny’s cast-offs. Grandmillennial style rose up on social media as a reaction to the ultra-sleek modern and minimalist décor that has so pervaded Instagram feeds the world over. It’s characterized by an appreciation for pieces that have been deemed “outdated” or “too stuffy.” But don’t think Grandmillennial style completely rejects the fresh and modern. On the contrary, it’s all about working in a few pieces that are on-trend to create a look that is ever-evolving and never stale. It’s a whimsical approach to design, with layered patterns, bold colors and a sense of humor. Think fringe and ruffles, wallpaper and chinoiserie, trims and drapery. Everything is just a little bit “extra.” If that sounds a lot like Southern design, you’re onto something. These two styles absolutely share some important DNA. What separates the two is a wink and a smile; where Southern homes are traditional and elegant, Grandmillennial spaces tend to be just a little silly. Think pillows embroidered with funny phrases, a Greek bust used as a planter, intentionally clashing patterns and an unexpected, irreverent work of art above the mantle. Want to bring Grandmillennial style into your own home? Here are a few tips and tricks to make it uniquely yours.

More Patterns, Please! The first unwritten rule of going Grandmillennial is “bring on the prints!” Playing with patterns is the cornerstone of this style. From wallpaper to upholstery, rugs to throw pillows, work them in whenever and wherever possible. Make the look cohesive by sticking to a color scheme.

Prim Trim Ruffles, tassels, fringe, garland, pompoms, ric-rac and grosgrain… these little touches help slingshot décor elements from ordinary to extra. From table skirts to curtain ties, there are countless ways to customize your space with these interesting little details.

Go Antiquing To paraphrase Ina Garten, if you don’t have precious family heirloom furniture to incorporate into your décor, store bought is fine. Scour local antique stores, thrift shops and vintage vendors to find classic pieces that speak to you. Look for traditional silhouettes with character. A word of caution: you may be tempted to DIY some pieces in need of rehab. If you’re skilled at such endeavors, by all means, go for it! But if not… steer for pieces that you don’t have to work on. While you’re browsing, consider vintage textiles. Vintage drapery, deadstock fabric, antique table linens or even scarves can be worked into your décor in a snap.

Get Quirky It’s so important to incorporate your personality and sense of humor into this style. Bring in a sculpture that makes you smile. Add a bold neon accent that no one’s expecting. Throw in an ultra-modern light fixture. Use a cheeky pattern or throw pillow… whatever brings “you” into the space. Accessories are important here. Grandmillennial style loves to adorn walls, shelves and tables with fascinating trinkets. This is one place where the rules of what “counts” as Grandmillennial need not apply. Feel free to mix antiques with modern objects. Set your table with a mix of granny’s china and brand-new chargers and flatware. Put a sleek Scandi-inspired candelabra right beside the antique placemats you got at the flea market. This is about you and what you love, not about what’s trendy. And that’s the whole point of Grandmillennial style! •

Joey's Carpet Care Cleaning up – and even preventing – messes for over 40 years!

Since 1980, Joey’s Carpet Care

has provided expert services in residential and commercial carpet, upholstery, tile & grout, wood flooring and area rug cleaning to the central Kentucky area. It also provides odor removal and fabric protection, as well as 24-hour water removal and structural drying services, which have often proven to be lifesavers in such a wet region. “I grew up in this business and knew at a young age that I wanted to continue what my parents started,” explained Ben Pickett, who runs Joey's Carpet Care today with the same level of proficiency and attention to detail that the company was founded upon. “Now, 24 years later, I take pride in being an owner of a multigenerational company. It gives me great joy to bring my kids to ‘daddy’s work’ and I look forward to the chance to teach them in the same way that I was taught.” It could very well be that one or more of Pickett’s four children (twin four-yearolds Bo and Cooper, two-year-old Millie and five-month-old Margot) grow up to continue the family legacy, extending a family trade that embodies all of the things Lexington’s best businesses are known for. by Peter Chawaga | photos by Keni Parks and courtesy

After Blotting... HUGE Difference!

Untreated Upholstery An Inspirational Origin

Some 42 years ago, Joey's Carpet Care started with a portable extractor in the back of a Volkswagen bus. Given those humble beginnings and the astronomical amount of success the business has seen since, Pickett remains inspired by both of his parents’ work and what they have built today. “While I have been greatly influenced and trained by my father, I was also inspired by my mother,” he recalled. “She was a partner in starting the business and a master certified cleaner as well. She always told me to do everything in life as if I had to write my name on it. She was an example of hard work and generosity.” The hard work has undoubtedly paid off. Growing from the back of their bus, Joey's Carpet Care now operates a variety of truck-mounted equipment, portables and other specialized tools to give it the ability to work on all types of fabrics. It also remains innovative when it comes to environmental consciousness. “As society has become more environmentally conscientious, everyone wants their furnishings and floor coverings to last longer and be more sustainable,” Pickett explained. “We want to play our role in helping to maintain and restore these items to last as long as possible, while helping keep your home clean and healthy.”

The trajectory of Joey's Carpet Care and its focus on the environment are also exemplified by the addition of the MicroSeal franchise to its set of tools — a non-toxic product that helps fabrics last longer and maintain their visual appeal.

Looking Up For Upholstery

The most often asked questions about carpet care services revolve around upholstery cleaning. With more and more consumers buying higher-end furnishings, it has never been more important that buyers understand the upkeep and identify the fabrics correctly prior to cleaning. For instance, cotton upholstery can be prone to numerous problems when cleaned in standard ways, like bleeding, shrinking and browning. That is why many consumers will see “dry clean only” labels on their upholstery material. While other services might refuse to clean such products, or clean them as they would other material (and put them at risk of serious damage), Joey's Carpet Care & MicroSeal offers free in-home consultations to demonstrate how they determine the fabric construction with a burn test, then educate and explain the proper care needed. During these consultations, the Joey's team will examine each piece of furniture and other areas to determine the best methods for its care, and offer an exact pricing for

the agreed upon cleaning procedures. In the case of upholstery, its special MicroSeal product comes in handy. “We offer several fabric protectors, but none rival MicroSeal,” the Joey's team explained. “Applying MicroSeal not only provides stain resistance, but it also gives excellent UV protection while helping fabrics resist wear and abrasion, lasting up to 60% longer. When we MicroSeal your new upholstery, rugs or carpet, we include a lifetime service warranty. When you use fine fabrics, a good fabric protector can be the difference between a close call and ruined.” Joey's will also bring upholstered items to its facility for in-plant restorative cleaning and odor removal.

Hometown Heritage

At the end of the day, Joey's Carpet Care relies on its family legacy, innovative product line and dedication to customer satisfaction for its continued success. But, above all, it’s the region that it serves that has instilled in it an unparalleled drive. “For me, I love all of the things that define Kentucky,” explained Pickett, a Lexington native who now resides in Jessamine County with his wife Tiffany and their children. “Our heritage, bourbon, horse racing and college sports are all the unique offerings that make this a great place to run a family business.” The heritage that defines Pickett’s work has also come to define the service of Joey's Carpet Care, which emphasizes a positive customer experience, every time. “One of our most repeated phrases at Joey’s is, ‘Anything you tell someone beforehand is education, but anything you tell them afterwards is an excuse,’” Pickett concluded. “This really focuses on the importance of our ability to communicate with our customers.”

Creative

We love a high-contrast color scheme. They're playful, energizing and unique. Many homeowners fear these palettes, but with a little guidance, they can be absolutely showstopping.

Orange

and Blue

When it comes to unexpected color schemes, it doesn't get much more surprising than the pairing of orange and blue. It feels familiar and yet totally different, warm yet cool, dynmaic yet comfortable; a true study in contrasts! Making this contrast work for you means utilizing blue wherever possible then peppering in a few bold touches of orange. Wrap up the look with dark woods, leather and beige accents.

Pink

and Green

Is there any color combo more classically southern than pink and green? Whether you favor hot pink and lime or pretty blushes and sage, it's hard to top this dynamic duo of color! That said, this is a color pairing that asks you to tread lightly. To prevent visual burnout, use these hues throughout a space that is otherwise fairly neutral. Shades of pink and green always look great with golds and brass, but black metal accents can really allow these shades to shine! If you're hoping to make your space light, bright and airy, look no further; this is the color scheme you need.

Fuschia

and Brown

When it comes to irreverent color schemes, nothing can top fuschia. Falling somewhere between rich purple and striking magenta, this color is an instant conversation starter. But that boldness comes at a price. On its own, this powerhouse hue can come across as very unsophisticated, even juvenile. That's where warm, honeyed browns come in. Natural woods, deep leather and soft beige tones help ground fanciful fuschia. Yellow, gold and brass accents bring tons of visual appeal and glam. However you approach this constrasting combo, remember that less is always more with fuschia.

decorating Faux Pas When it comes to decorating your home, everyone wants to create a space that is cozy, inviting and representative of themselves and their lifestyle. However, there is such a thing as too much! When decorating, you want to make sure you’re not creating clutter and chaos by accident. Here are some common mistakes you’ll want to avoid to end up with a beautiful and polished home.

April 2022 | TOPSinLex.com

109

ONE // Relying too much on open storage Bookcases and built-in shelving have become a popular home decor element loved by all. They can create a stunning design piece when accented the right way. Items like framed photos, books and collectibles are great ways to fill open shelving. What you want to avoid is cramming something in every inch of space causing it to become too full and cluttered. When decorating open storage, be sure to leave open space around the items allowing them to breathe as a whole.

TWO // using too many colors When deciding on paint colors and decor for your home, don’t go crazy with the number of colors you’re using. This automatically causes the eye to dance around and feel chaotic. Instead, decide on one or two hues along with a neutral shade to keep the entire room within the same color family. You can get creative by using different tones and shades of the same color to create depth while also keeping the overall look chic and cohesive.

photo courtesy of Neat House Sweet Home

Also, open storage is not the place for electronics and cords. This is an easy way to create clutter. Instead, tuck these away behind a cabinet or in a basket to make your shelving more appealing to the eye.

three // adding too many accent pillows This mistake speaks for itself. Don’t get excited at your local TJMaxx and purchase an abundance of throw pillows for your couch or bed thinking that they’ll all go together perfectly. A good rule of thumb is 2-3 pillows on each end of a sofa to create comfort and a visually pleasing space.

four // pushing furniture against walls A lot of us might be naturally inclined to use our furniture to frame the lining of a room thinking that it opens up the middle of the room, when in reality it does the opposite. By placing a piece of furniture on every inch of the walls, you’re creating a ‘heaviness’ around the room. Instead, bring your furniture inward and create more conversational spaces that allow the room to really breathe.

five // placing too much decor on tables When decorating tables like a living room coffee table, the fewer items the better. You don’t want to cause clutter by overdecorating. Keep the items personal and functional. For example, a beautiful tray on your entry table to hold your keys and sunglasses. Place decor in small groupings to allow the table to feel clean and breathable.

six // hanging pictures randomly Hanging beautiful art or family photos is the perfect way to decorate and personalize a home. However, adding too many pieces can cause your walls to feel chaotic and haphazard. Instead, place photos in an organized gallery wall arrangement to instantly make the room feel more balanced and put together.

Pros to Know!

PROTECTING YOUR INTERESTS: CLEAR TITLE OFFERS STRONG CUSTOMER CARE ALONGSIDE ATTENTION TO DETAIL Clear Title is a full-service title company that has a reputation based on excellent customer service and ethical business practices, along with experts who hold themselves to the highest professional standards. Dedicated team members are ready to make you the highest priority during your closing while providing the highest quality, most efficient, accurate, and reliable services possible, all for a fair price.

they all share, their hard work, and putting the customers first 100% of the time.

Rather than looking solely at the experience under one’s belt, Clear Title also focuses on the quality of the professionals they hire. This strategy means that each of their team members provides stellar service and care, treating every client as if they are their only client. Perhaps for this very reason, Clear Title sees outstanding customer loyalty across all 120 Kentucky counties.

Jeff Vanzant founded Clear Title in 2004 after being encouraged by his brother – who was in the mortgage industry – to start a good, reliable title company in Central Kentucky. Andrea thought he was a bit crazy to leave his job and start this new venture. But within a year, the two were engaged and starting a new business. Now, they are happily married and owners of a thriving company. Aside from their shared passion for Clear Title, Jeff and Andrea’s number one joy in life is raising their three sons. With two of their sons having different types of epilepsy, the duo has done extensive self-educating over the past ten years, and the pair are strong advocates for epilepsy awareness. They enjoy helping others who may be on the same journey.

With a pandemic going on over the past couple of years, you would expect companies to stay stagnant in the hiring department, but Clear Title has done precisely the opposite. Their work family has grown from six to 13 over the course of the pandemic and continues to grow. Owners Jeff and Andrea Vanzant describe their work family as the biggest inspiration during their time at Clear Title, enabling them to pursue the goals they originally set for the business. They are incredibly grateful for the vision

When asked what experience they would share with someone starting a new company, Jeff advises, “There is no better time than the present.” He says that owning your business is similar to raising a child, with ups and downs, sleepless nights, and first steps. You have to be thickskinned and be willing to roll with the punches, but you will learn so much about yourself in the process. Owning a business is hard, even educational, but it is worth the effort, he says.

Real Estate Title Search

Jennifer Smith

Autumn Tucker

A real estate title search, also known as a property title search, is a search for documents on a specific property. The property title, which defines who has legal ownership of a home, might not contain all of the updated information about liens on the property. It also may not include a complete history of the property. A property title search will tell you who — besides the owner — has a claim on the home. A property title search will also include any deed restrictions, which means it will tell you if there are limits to how the property can be used. For example, there might be a limit to the type of or amount of construction the city will allow on a property. A property title search will also reveal if there are any easements on the property. An easement is the right for another party to use someone else’s land.

Ben Groonwald

Regina Million-Mason

Property boundaries are also included in the property title search. This might seem pretty straightforward if you have a fence or defined property division at the side of a driveway. But problems can arise if previous construction mistakes were made, so it’s important to know exactly where your property lines sit.

Lender's and Owner's Title Insurance Why would you need title insurance after a thorough real estate title search?

Rhonda Sowder

Melissa Strauss

There are always chances that an unexpected usage claim could come up. For example, a person who has performed work and filed a lien against the property can have an interest in the property. Governing bodies may have liens on the property for tax dues, or may possess an easement that has rights to thread utility lines in the plot. It's essential to have protection against these issues, which could hit you any time after purchase. Title insurance would cover all these issues related to the title that have previously occurred. It requires a on-etime payment, but protects homeowners and their heirs as long as they own the home.• kycleartitle.com • (859) 523-8485

That’s why I’ve developed a diverse team of real estate agents from all walks of life.” Kymberly explained that real estate pros are a necessary part of the process as buying and selling homes simply takes too much time for buyers and sellers to handle alone. “Selling a home requires a significant time commitment, and marketing your home doesn’t begin or end with a listing. There’s so much that goes into it,” she said. “Allowing us to take care of these responsibilities allows you to focus on other things, like keeping your home show ready and finding your new home.”

She is also motivated by the chance to help clients establish something that is long-lasting and meaningful. “During someone’s first time making a real estate transaction, from buying, selling, or investing— I love to educate people on their options and help them to think long term and build generational wealth,” Otis said. “The last two years have been a challenge for obvious reasons, but this past year has been the most competitive I’ve seen in this industry. In a seller’s market, it’s crucial to have representation, on the buyer’s side when building a strong offer, and on the sellers when confronted with multiple showings, offers, and making sure they get the most profit. Sellers are also getting many offers, and need an expert advisor to help compare them,” she explained. “Realtors have the resources to connect you to any other services you need, and they will guide you on how to get the best price for your home or to get ready to make the best offer possible on your dream home.”

KAREN MUNDY Haymaker Residential Real Estate 859.361.7390 hbhomes.net

Serving as the broker of Haymaker Residential Real Estate and representing custom homebuilders for 26 years at McLellan Homes, Karen Mundy has a range of real estate experience that enhances her work for clients every day. Mundy’s impressive 38 years of real estate experience and multiple leadership positions with real estate organizations and the local community provide her with a unique perspective for those considering buying or selling residential real estate. “My number one specialty in real estate is custom new construction,” Mundy explained. “I’m also a specialist at satisfying family wants and needs as they navigate the resale market.” “The lack of availability and changes in interest rates have made this current market unlike any other,” Mundy said. “Making dreams come true through custom building or in existing properties will continue to drive my love for working as a real estate broker in Central Kentucky.”

“Real estate has changed for me personally in the past year in a vast way,” explained Melissa Thompson of Keller Williams Legacy Group, summarizing a sentiment that has been felt by many professionals, buyers and sellers in the real estate market today. “I now have more clientele looking to purchase real estate and/or sell than ever before. The spring season is definitely upon us and I don’t see the market slowing down anytime soon.” And with so much changing in realty these days, it’s now more important than ever to turn to professionals in the space who can help clients reach their ultimate buying and selling goals, all while keeping the process stress free. A vast array of clients have found Thompson does just that by drawing upon her passion for this region and the chance to serve others. “I value most the beautiful properties here and that satisfactory feeling that comes along with being able to help as many clients as possible turn their dreams into achievements,” she said. “I love to see happy faces and know that I have gone the extra mile to ensure their happiness for years to come!”

GLASS DOCTOR “Success is... knowing your purpose in life, growing to reach your maximum potential, and sowing seeds that benefit others.” - John C. Maxwell Philip and Katelyn Schultz

moved to Lexington, KY from the Houston, TX metropolitan area in 2017. Equipped with a background in Construction Process Management as well as Bookkeeping, they took an opportunity to take over the Glass Doctor of Lexington Franchise and dove head first into a new adventure. While entrepreneurship ran in Philip’s family, the glass and glazing industry was new terrain that they didn’t have a lot of experience in– but that didn’t discourage them. The franchise in Lexington has been around since 2009 and when Philip and Katelyn acquired it in April of 2017, it had been slowly but steadily growing as it serviced all of Fayette and surrounding counties. With the support of the franchise system, Glass Doctor of Lexington has been quickly growing and won a 2021 Top Gun Award recognizing them in the top 10% of all Glass Doctors in the country. While they didn’t know anyone in Lexington when they moved here, “We set out to make an impact in the lives of our team members and customers by caring no matter how big or small their project is,” Philip stated. Striving to achieve success the way John Maxwell describes it, their mission is to build, empower and grow a team that is driven to be the best at what they do regardless of who the customer is. Katelyn says, “We are constantly coaching our team so that each day our goal is to provide an excellent service experience and we just happen to install glass while we’re at it.”

Also members of the Greater Lexington Apartment Association, Philip and Katelyn are always looking for opportunities to connect with and impact those around them in their community. Each team meeting they review their Code of Values, Respect, Integrity, Customer Focus and Having Fun in the Process in pursuit of the company’s mission, “To be the first thought in Central Kentucky for any glass need by providing outstanding customer service.” When Philip and Katelyn aren’t busy with Glass Doctor, you can find them volunteering at their church, playing volleyball or going on walks with their Maltipoo, Thor. Katelyn also has her own business of formal hair styling for brides and bridal parties called, Katelyn Joy Bridal Beauty.

HEAD over HEELS NEW T W IST S ON EQUINE T RADIT ION brings the start of Kentucky's unofficial social season... including all of the April equestrian events that demand fresh style, fancy parties and fabulous evenings out on the town. While we're big fans of all the tried-and-true traditions that come running with the ponies – think mint juleps, Croakies, huge hats and unforgettable Derby Eve galas – we're also not afraid to mix it up once in a while. From unique trackside looks to new recipes to try, we're flipping tradition on its head this month!

PART Y PERFECT ION:

Mix it up!

Before you holler "heresy," hear us out.

No one's denying that the mint julep is a Kentucky icon. We'd even argue that the first Saturday in May wouldn't be complete without a little silver cup filled with mint, crushed ice, simple syrup and Bourbon. But – if we're being honest – we don't know anyone who particularly craves this classic concoction. While we respect the traditional julep, we acknowledge that most guests to a Derby party or Keeneland tailgate would probably prefer something else to sip. And so we're offering this alternative recipe: The Official Drink of the Kentucky Oaks!

Finlandia® Oaks Lily® 1 part Finlandia® Vodka 1 part Sweet and Sour Mix 1/4 part Triple Sec 3 parts Cranberry Juice Fill a stemless wine glass with crushed ice Add in the ingredients and stir Add a straw and garnish with blackberries and a lemon wedge (recipe courtesy of: kentuckyderby.com)

Looking for a lighter brunch option? We just added some fan favorites back to our menu. Our chicken salad sandwich and our award-wining egg salad sandwich are back by popular demand. We’ve also taken our chicken salad and egg salad to create a brand-new menu item. The Chicken or the Egg? Both of our locations feature a seasonal patio seating area. Our Hamburg location’s patio adds a whopping twenty-six tables during the summer. BEAUTY

After what feels like years of begging for warmer weather, spring is finally here! Along with taking in the fresh air and doing some spring cleaning, now is the perfect time for a little skin refresher. When the weather changes, your skincare routine should change along with it to allow your skin to adapt to the new season and temperature changes. Though it may be irritating to switch up your routine, changes in humidity, sun exposure, and increased outdoor activity require a little tweaking, dermatologists claim. So, now that you have the idea in your head, how do you go about prepping your skin for warm and sunny spring days? We’ve taken tips and tricks from dermatologists and other skincare experts and are here to tell you our favorites so you can leave dry, dreary skin in the past!

April 2022 | TOPSinLex.com

169

Exfoliate

If you weren’t already exfoliating, honey, start today! Exfoliating allows you to remove dry, dead skin cells from the surface of your skin to reveal the bright, healthy skin underneath. It also aids in increased circulation and stimulates the production of new skin cells, creating a glowing complexion. Make sure not to over-exfoliate, though, because your skin can become irritated. Buffing away dead skin with a gentle scrub two or three times a week is enough to maintain a beautiful, glowing look. Kick off your springtime regimen with a chemical peel, after checking with your dermatologist, which quickly exfoliates, triggers collagen production, and leaves you with a fresh complexion.

Moisturize

If you got into slugging this winter and experienced some seriously hydrated skin, sorry to tell you, but it’s time to put the Vaseline away. Spring means it’s time to switch to a lighter moisturizer that contains humectants and emollients. Humectants reduce moisture loss while emollients trap that moisture in, so you can still protect your skin while using a light moisturizer. Gel-based formulas absorb into the skin quickly and create a light barrier. Don’t continue to use a heavy cream as the chance of sweating goes up in warmer weather, and a rich moisturizer can clog pores, leading to breakouts.

Sunscreen Up

La Roche-Posay Anthelios UltraLight Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50

While you may or may not wear sunscreen during the winter (brownie points if you do), it’s a necessity for the warmer months. UV rays become stronger in the spring and summer months as the earth is closer to the sun, meaning your skin is at an increased risk for sun damage. Apply sunscreen to your face, neck, and chest to ensure adequate sun protection. I know you probably want your skin to stop reflecting when you go outside, but don’t go for sunscreen with low SPF. Get a sunscreen with SPF 50 and broadspectrum protection, which will protect you from both UVA and UVB rays. You’ll still get a golden tan while being protected from burning or sun damage.

Vitamins & Minerals

Like sunscreen, antioxidants should be a part of your skincare routine year round, but especially during spring and summer months. Antioxidants work to protect your skin from sun damage, but also from environmental elements like pollution. Fun fact: pollution and UV damage are two of the biggest contributors to signs of aging, so don’t ignore that vitamin C bottle in your cabinet! Antioxidants like vitamin C, retinol, vitamin E, and ferulic acid can help protect your skin from the breakdown of collagen and elastin as well as sun damage. When using antioxidants, don’t expect huge changes overnight. While they can make your skin feel softer and smoother quickly, you’ll see best results with continued, long-term use. SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic with 15% L-Ascorbic Acid

Spring Clean

Japonesque Solid Brush Cleanser

Cleaning and purging your beauty arsenal may be a hassle, but we all know it needs to be done pretty frequently. While we’re probably all guilty of using makeup brushes that are chalk full of old products (I know I am), spring is a great time to cleanse and swap out any brushes, sponges, and products you’ve been using for a while. Brushes tend to hold onto bacteria, yeast, and mold, contributing to skin irritation and breakouts. When going through your makeup, don’t hold on to anything past its expiration date, which can typically be found on the bottom of the packaging. If you can’t find a date, smell it! If it doesn’t look, smell, or feel like it did when you purchased it, chances are you should toss it.

As spring ushers in new beginnings, now is the perfect time to hit up your salon for a fresh new do. Last year may have been about whose hair took the least time and effort, but this year is about statement-making cuts and colors inspired by decades past - in the most fashionable way, of course! This spring, don’t be surprised if you catch yourself having to do a double take because you thought you passed Jennifer Aniston on your way to yoga.

RACHEL Less is more in 2022, and long, bouncy 90s layers are here to get the job done. Inspired by Jennifer Aniston’s character Rachel on the famed comedy, Friends, this cut makes it easy to fake a fresh salon blowout. This trend is fairly effortless once you finish your initial styling, which is good news if you despise drying your hair every night. Even if you choose to let your hair air dry, there’s a good chance your layers will look soft and wispy. Grab an appropriately sized round brush and some curlers to master this style, and you’re sure to look just as good as Rachel herself.

be Not only does a blunt cut make your hair look thicker, but it gives you tons of style. A blunt textured cut, like the one our girl Julianne Hough was rocking at the end of 2020, instantly makes your hair look thicker by leaving the ends blunt and allowing textured bend throughout the body. A mini blunt bob is great if you want to go shorter, as the ends graze your chin. No sacrificing texture with this cut, either. photo courtesy of Hello Glow Co.

Wanting to keep some length? A blunt collarbone cut hits right at your collarbone and is a perfectly flattering length for everyone. photo courtesy of Liv with Great Hair

NATUREL With being stuck inside for so long, more and more people have started to embrace what God gave ‘em. Specifically, more women are letting their gray hair show instead of rushing to the salon to cover it up. One celeb embracing this trend is Ms. Goop herself, Gwyneth Paltrow. Along with rocking their natural color, more people are living in their natural texture. Whether straight, kinky, curly, coily, or wavy, we hope this trend is here to stay. Remember, it’s important to realize your natural texture so you can use the correct products. If you’re choosing to embrace your grays and natural texture, make sure to use a gentle sulfate-free shampoo.

BROWNS Whether you’re a blonde, brunette, or anything in between, the trend is warming up in 2022. Warm tones like caramel, auburn, honey, and copper give your hair dimension and a richer feel. A ‘midlight’ provides your locks with deeper colors that seamlessly connect to your base and other lighter highlights, resulting in a multidimensional, controlled look. As a bonus to your shower routine and your checkbook, warm tones typically require less maintenance than cool tones, making them a fashion-forward, yet feasible option. Less maintenance also means more of a chance for you to focus on growing out your shiny, luxurious locks.

If you enjoy sitting in the salon chair often, you’re in luck. High maintenance colors like Paris Hilton’s double processed blonde and Carrie Preston’s vivid red are hot in 2022. When talking about the double process method, if you have dark hair, you’ll need to first apply a lightener followed with a gloss and toner to create a delicate, icy tone. When considering a high maintenance look, keep in mind you’ll have to have regular touch-up appointments every few weeks or let your hair grow out for a long period of time. Wise words to heed, especially if you’re thinking about a bold color.

THIS

year is the Million Dollar Celebration of Dancing with the Lexington Stars. Culminating with this year’s event on Saturday, April 30, 2022, the Rotary Club of Lexington will have raised over $1,000,000 over 11 years for the Lexington Rotary Club Endowment Fund and our main beneficiary, Surgery on Sunday. For the third year, presenting sponsor will be CHI Saint Joseph Health. The objective of the Lexington Rotary Club Endowment Fund is to encourage and foster community service. It is the body of which the Rotary Club of Lexington conducts many philanthropic activities benefiting disadvantaged persons throughout Fayette County and Central Kentucky. Dancing with the Lexington Stars started in 2011 when Rotarians Gerald Marvel and Amanda Huddleston, the first co-chairs of the event, scheduled a meeting with Hunter Lisle, the owner of the Arthur Murray Dance Studio. They discussed the club hosting a dance event, inspired by the popular ABC television competition. The inaugural launch of Dancing with the Lexington Stars was a smashing success. The instant popularity of the event, the significant contributions of many committee members, and the wonderful work of The Lexington Rotary Club Endowment Fund have all made this annual event a huge success for eleven straight years. Carrying on with the inaugural leadership set forth by Gerald, Amanda, Hunter and Elesha in 2011, this year’s chairs Kim Johnson, Bret Anderson, Chris Stevenson along with Hunter Lisle and the Arthur Murray Dance Studio and the committee have planned what will be a truly gala event. It takes place at The Kentucky Castle on Versailles Road. The East Terrace Lounge, adjacent to the ballroom, will have an exciting yet more relaxed vibe. The Lounge will feature a DJ, dance floor, entertainment, and a few surprises. Tickets for the East Terrace Lounge are $125 and include heavy hors d’oeuvres and open bar. Again this year there will be numerous items to bid on, as well as a live auction with several major items that have been donated.

What happens when a Dad, whose signature dance moves are 80s style breakdancing, teams up with his 8th-grade cheerleader daughter? Find out when Bret Anderson and youngest daughter Natalie participate as a duo in the 2022 Dancing with the Lexington Stars competition. Bret is an 8-year Rotarian and president and founder of Cohesion LLC, a Lexington-based consulting firm. Through servicing the sales and marketing needs of Cohesion's national roster of business clients, Bret advises forward-thinking corporate leaders on company growth while also benefiting others with his understanding of the cohesive power of personal and professional health and well-being. Veritas Christian Academy student Natalie balances her free time between art, fitness, and hanging out with friends and family, which recently expanded to include Jeff the guinea pig. The Andersons are no strangers to DWTLS. Bret has been involved in every aspect of the program, from leadership to sponsorship to competition. After initially serving as a committee member, he expanded the program's success during his tenure leading program sponsorships. He also committed Cohesion LLC as an event sponsor. He now co-chairs the annual fundraising and social event. While competing in the 2019 DWTLS, Bret and wife Carrie were joined by all three of their children to deliver an unprecedented entertainment experience. After that pre-pandemic opportunity to support this great cause while making a family memory of a lifetime, father and daughter are excited to return as a duo with a focus on more traditional ballroom dance (and a few surprises).

Maria is a proud Kentuckian and has a great amount of passion for our Bluegrass state. She was selected as Miss Kentucky USA and later went on to place as a runner up in the 2009 Miss USA telecast owned by Donald Trump and NBC. After Miss USA, she strived to obtain her goal of modeling for a living. She reached that goal upon signing with numerous modeling agencies across the country such as FORD Models, NV Models, and more - who she still works through today. That partnership graciously brought upon opportunities to shoot for campaigns such as Pantene, Oil of Olay, Jockey, Nike, Curel lotion, Remington curling irons, Martini, Kohls, and more. Maria's career now consists of half modeling and half TV hosting. Locally, Maria hosts a sports show on Sundays called Out of Bounds on Fox 56, and she hosts numerous local commercials such as for Bob Allen Motormall. As a lifelong UK fan, Maria also is thrilled to work as the oncourt entertainment host for the University of Kentucky Men's basketball team. Nationally, she is a digital host for SEC Network's football show - SEC Nation. She has been spotted as a trophy model on stage of the CMAs, and as the lead girl in a Tim McGraw and a Josh Groban music video. Maria has a heart for making a difference in the youth of today. Therefore, she works as a coach for girls aspiring to improve their interview, public speaking, modeling, and pageantry skills to help them become the best versions of themselves. She also loves to give inspirational speeches to help girls realize their natural potential.

INSPIRATIONS:

Lexington Latinx Culture is Alive and Thrives

by Donna Ison | photos courtesy of Casa de la Cultura

INSPIRATIONS SPONSORED BY LG&E

Casa de la Cultura’s mission is “to promote Latino culture and encourage the learning and use of the Spanish language through various educational and creative programs and activities.” In the words of Mercedes Harn, president of the board of Casa de la Cultura, “What we want our community to know is that the Latinx culture is so much more than Cinco de Mayo or tequila and is so much bigger than Mexico. The Latinx community in Kentucky brings and offers so much; we need to be able to recognize their efforts.” Alongside bringing awareness to Latinx culture within the state, the organization is focused on keeping traditions alive amongst its youth. Founded by Monica Calleja, who currently serves as director, Casa de la Cultura’s mission is “to promote Latino culture and encourage the learning and use of the Spanish language through various educational and creative programs and activities.” The ultimate goal is that Latinx children now living in Kentucky will know who they are and where they come from. According to Harn, “The younger generation loses their connection with the culture of their immigrant parents once they arrive to the state. This leads to confusion of who they are and how and where they belong. We want these kids to recognize their cultural identity.” One of the primary ways Casa de la Cultura accomplishes this is through the arts. Harn said, “Latinos have contributed to the arts in lots of forms and media since the beginning of time. Most Latin cultures have been preserved through arts, including dance. We feel dance is especially important because it involves music and, through the choreography, we convey a story.” The organization teaches dances from Latin America and Mexico, including jarabe tapatío, the mambo from Cuba , sayas from Bolivia, and festejo from Peru as well as choreographies from Estate of Guerrero, Tamaulipas, and Veracruz. Classes are available for both children and adults. Throughout the year, members don traditional costumes from their native countries and perform at

events such as Festival Latino de Lexington and WorldFest in Louisville. Come May, Casa de la Cultura also hosts Festival dia de las Madres. Prior to COVID, 800 families gathered to celebrate Mother’s Day as a community. Harn pointed out, “Mother’s Day is big in Latinx culture. We celebrate family and mothers by giving them gifts and performing a show, and perhaps most important, providing information from other helpful organizations. An informed community is a strong community. Along with dance, Casa de la Cultura also provides classes in painting, embroidery, and making piñatas and alebrijes. First created by Mexican artist Pedro Linares, alebrijes are colorful papier mâché sculptures depicting mythical animals; think cat with tentacles, goats with butterfly wings, or dogs with flowers for ears, painted in all the vivid colors of the rainbow. These fantastical creatures can also be made from wood. One of the highlights of the year for Casa de la Cultura is the Día de los Muertos celebration, which they plan along with Lexington Parks & Recreation. Held on November 1 each year, Día de los Muertos—which translates as “Day of the Dead”—is a celebration dedicated to life, death, remembering loved ones, and honoring ancestors. The festival is rich with rituals, symbolism, and art, and it is free to the public. A central part of the celebration is the community ofrenda, an alter decorated as a sign of remembrance where family and friends can place gifts of appreciation for the deceased. Of course, food plays a large role in every culture. So, this April, Casa de la Cultura, in partnership with Crave, will bring back Taco Week, where local restaurants offer up their most unique and mouth-watering takes on this traditional dish. •

ormer cattle farmer Rudy Leake has taken his passions for the beef industry, farming, and the finer things in life and transformed them into a thriving business in the heart of Lexington. VanMeter James, a newly opened Boutique Butcher shop in Downtown Lexington, provides only the top cuts of Certified Angus Beef® to its customers.

Local, Quality Boutique Butcher

In addition to their premium steaks, the business has found a way to take a portion of its profits and give them to charity. A dollar from every sale made goes to the Mick Colvin Scholarship fund, giving students who are pursuing a degree in agricultural studies money toward their education. Rudy says he gets to live out his dream everyday, and hopes this allows someone else to live out theirs.

As Rudy’s children grew, the father of two realized he and his family needed to be closer to the city. He sold his cattle and to continue following his passion, opened a butcher shop. Rudy says what makes his shop special is the unique, personable details and the people that make up the business. VanMeter James is actually named after Leake’s two children, while the company’s logo is written in his own handwriting. The men who work for Leake have experienced the patience and the want for quality products it takes to learn more about the beef industry, and according to Leake, each has done an incredible job even when coming from various backgrounds. Along with those he works with in the shop, Rudy attributes much of the shop’s success to he and his wife’s hard work. He says their both their personal and professional growth together over the past eight years has allowed him to be in the position he is today. Leake says as time goes on he plans to expand upon the cuts he offers at VanMeter James, but wanted to start with basics you typically see on steakhouse menus. Another

192

factor making this butcher shop unique is the aging process of the meat. All of their steaks are wet aged for 28 days and hand cut to specific thickness. All of that is fun for Rudy, but his main goal is to expose Certified Angus Beef® and their brands, like Teakhaus cutting boards and Miyabi Steak Knives, to a wider audience. He enjoys the experience of getting a steak in front of someone, with his favorite cuts being either the Certified Angus Beef® Bone In Filet or the Certified Angus Beef® Brand Prime Kansas City Steak. He claims leaving the bone on the filet takes its tenderness to another level, while leaving the bone in the KC Strip allows for a wellmarbled, tender piece of steak. If your mouth is watering like mine is, you can find VanMeter James at 333 E. Main St. in Suite 160, where Rudy would love to assist you. Stop in to learn more about the top 3% of steak in the U.S. and leave with a delicious steak cut specifically for you. A SIGN OF THE TIMES Thorough Graphics prepares to celebrate 40 years as a locally owned business. by Kate Savage | photos courtesy Thorough Graphics “Being in the right place at the right time and going with a good thing when you’ve got it going” has had a lot to do with the business success story of Thorough Graphics and husband and wife owners, John and Ann Cox. John worked his way through college at a local Lexington sign company. In 1982, with that experience and his BA from the UK College of Fine Arts under his belt, he struck out on his own and started Thorough Graphics at the age of 23. He married Ann a year later and – after meeting with a marriage counselor to discuss the pros and cons of working together – they became business partners as well. “We still absolutely make decisions together. It wouldn’t work if we didn’t,” said John. “Compromise is the key.” The now-closed sign company where John worked while

in college specialized in signage for the horse industry. This became his ongoing focus with Thorough Graphics and provided a unique market niche that has since allowed him to cater to a local industry with a built-in constant and recurring demand. John’s mother and brother worked for Blood-Horse Magazine, so they were connected to the thoroughbred industry. But it was a phone call from the editor of BloodHorse while John and Ann were on honeymoon that was to decide their business direction moving forward. This pivotal call resulted in an order to make plaques for every horse, jockey and trainer ever inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs; to this day, this is a standing order they continue to fulfill – over 900 plaques later.

TOPSinLex.com | April 2022

195

The majority of their work is with the thoroughbred horse sales that take place here at Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland, but also with those in Saratoga, Baltimore, Ocala and Miami. “The main stuff for the horse sales involves pedigree signs that go on the stall doors of every horse sold at public auction. We make about 10,000 of these every year,” said John. Thorough Graphics is able to make just about any kind of sign but they have chosen not to get involved in any that are electrical. The team makes individual letters, bronze plaques, directional signs, main entry identification, vehicle lettering and more. However, working with the thoroughbred industry is what they prefer and “when horse sales are going on – July-January – we have to turn down everything else except for the horse stuff,” said John. With his degree in Studio Art, John serves as the designer, which is his favorite part of the sign business. “With all the technology today, it seems anyone can buy a machine that cuts letters, and voila, you’re in the sign business,” said John. “But technology only goes so far. You can make a perfectly ‘bad’ sign that has perfect lettering, but without the design, it’s still just a bad sign,” he emphasized. His own work has been recognized with numerous awards, including first place in a national sign design competition sponsored by Signs of the Times Magazine. When he started out in 1982, John used to hand-paint everything. Today’s technology means there’s no longer

really any need to use a brush, although John readily admits some things still need to be painted by hand, such as jockey lawn statues. With digital plotters and printers, a computerized router, fairly sophisticated software and a full wood workshop, the actual work of sign fabrication has been revolutionized. But, as with any small business, there are many other hats to be worn, and so in addition to working as the designer and painter, John reckons he’s now an adept salesman, carpenter, installer, bookkeeper, and receptionist. He gets some relief from the accounting responsibilities as this is his wife Ann’s role as Vice President of the company. When time allows, John and Ann love to travel, and Sanibel Island is one of their favorite place to visit. In spite of being in the business of making new signs – or maybe because of – they have developed a love for vintage signs and over the years have collected more than 100 antique signs that they have at their shop on Sandersville Road. After a healthy, long career in the sign business, John thinks he’s still got another 7-8 good years in him. “We like what we do and enjoy the horse people we deal with on a daily basis,” he explained. So now, with a big 40-year milestone fast approaching this May, they plan to celebrate with an open house to thank all the customers who have supported them over these past years… and to let them know they aren’t ready to retire from the race just yet. •

Think

about what Kentucky football has lost since it beat Iowa in the Citrus Bowl to complete a second 10-win season in a four-year span: • Offensive coordinator Liam Coen, who revamped the UK offense into a pro-style attack, left after one season to become offensive coordinator for the Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams. • Offensive line coach Eric Wolford left after one season to join the Alabama staff. • Inside linebackers coach Jon Sumrall, one of UK's best recruiters, got the head job at Troy State. • Receiver Wan'Dale Robinson left early for the NFL after one record-setting season following his transfer from Nebraska. • Three starting offensive linemen — Darian Kinnard, Dare Rosenthal and Luke Fortner — are all likely NFL draft choices. • Three defensive players — Josh Paschal, Yussuf Corker and Marquan McCall — were all invited to the NFL Combine. Yet Kentucky coach Mark Stoops has been almost giddy as he thinks ahead to the season opener September 3rd against Miami. "Our players are as excited today as they were a year ago," Stoops said before spring practice started. "We have a culture here where guys work hard and want to win. That is not changing." Stoops went back to the NFL to help fill his coaching staff. He got San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello to be UK's new offensive coordinator and 49ers assistant offensive line coach Zach Yenser to become the new line coach. "There are some really good players coming back here," Scangarello said. "Coach Stoops has done a great job recruiting the right type of people. I think the pieces are

here that we need. There has been a foundation laid that has set the right trend for where we are headed." Those "good players" start with quarterback Will Levis and running back Chris Rodriguez. Levis threw for 2,826 yards and 24 touchdowns and ran for 376 yards and nine more scores. Rodriguez ran for 1,379 yards and three touchdowns last season and has averaged over 6.5 yards per carry overall during the last three seasons. Yenser, a Kentucky native, said he was "intrigued" about joining Stoops' staff. "Seeing his vision and plan for the future here really fired me up. It was a no-brainer to take the job," Yenser said. "It's a great opportunity to be part of what is going on here. We have guys used to winning who want to keep winning. "Coach Stoops is dedicated to the same physical play that we believed in at the 49ers. We are going to try and be the most physical offensive line on the field every game. That's the mentality we are going to keep having." Kentucky is also adding its highest-rated recruiting class that features the speed at receiver the Cats need to offset the loss of Robinson and potential depth at a lot of other positions. The Cats also got a huge boost when three linebackers — DeAndre Square, Jacquez Jones and Jordan Wright — all decided to return for a "super" senior season. Once again, Kentucky also did well in the transfer portal to potentially help fill voids in the offensive and defensive lines along with receivers. "The standard here now is to win ten or more games every year, and with the roster we have, I think we can do that," Levis said. "We have high expectations and standards for ourselves. Even though you might make a mistake, mistakes aren't acceptable. You can't beat yourself up, but you have to learn. I think as long as we trust the coaches, we can build on what we did last year and have an even better season." •

Wondering how to cook asparagus? you want brilliant green stalks with no added fats, blanch your asparagus. The easiest method? Preheat oven to 400F. Trim off woody bottom stem of stalks and peel lightly, if desired. Toss with a tablespoon of olive oil (per bunch). Optionally add in salt, pepper, crushed garlic or lemon zest. Roast 10-15 minutes. Makes a great plate partner with chicken, salads or a nice cut of beef from a local butcher, such as VanMeter James!

LAST BIT E: Asparagus Season! Is there anything better than asparagus season?! Okay, maybe puppy snuggles and first kisses are better, but the first sighting of fresh asparagus in the grocery store does give us butterflies. These little stalks of green goodness are a herald of ligher, brighter spring cuisine. While you can technically find asparagus year-round, its peak season is April and May. Asparagus can be cooked any number of ways; you can grill, steam, deep fry, roast, air fry, sauté it or even enjoy it raw. Enjoy asparagus as a simple side, a mix-in in your salad, a tasty soup, the backbone of a delicious omelet or a delicious appetizer (wrapped in prosciutto, natch.) When most people think of asparagus, the green varieties are what come to mind. As you might expect, it has a grassy, sweet taste that can have bitter notes. Those bitter notes can become more pronounced with certain cooking methods. People are divided on whether to peel green

asparagus; if the tough outer texture bothers you, use a vegetable peeler to remove the woody outermost layer of the stalk. White asparagus is actually grown in the dark. This prevents the development of chlorophyll. White asparagus tastes very similar to green, though many feel that it is slightly sweeter and more tender. The deliberate growing process means it’s more rare and often more expensive. To get the most of the more delicate texture of this variety, be sure to peel it. Purple asparagus has a higher sugar content, making it sweeter. It is also less fibrous. The purple coloring comes from anthocyanin, an antioxidant. This coloring only runs through the skin, so don’t peel this variety. The color makes it an interesting addition to any plate, though cooking can dull the purple hue; cook it over high, brief heat – if you cook it at all.
