Set Sail With Beaumont Kids Dentistry FEBRUARY IS CHILDREN'S DENTAL HEALTH MONTH! At Beaumont Kids Dentistry, we love February because it's Children's Dental Health Month! Great oral health and positive habits have tremendous implications on your child’s overall health. This is why it’s important to start seeing a pediatric dentist within six months of their first tooth coming in. The earlier we see your child, the earlier we can detect potential oral issues and treat any cavities or decay, leading to a healthier smile! Our office is set up to give your child the best experience while simultaneously receiving exceptional dental care from Dr. Jones and our crew. If you're looking for a dental home for your child, we are welcoming new patients to join us on our voyage!

Editor’s Picks Hello, February! The second month of the year means that spring is just around the corner and we can hopefully start the countdown to fewer snow days and less frostbite. It’s also a month that involves figuring out how to create memorable moments and meaningful celebrations for Valentine’s Day, which for some people can feel challenging. Remember that the day is all about celebrating love, whether with family members, your best friends, or a significant other. So, in the spirit of celebrating love of all sorts, here a few of my picks for doing just that!

Not a Knock-Off! Inexpensive alternatives to popular fragrances have always been around, but in the past, they haven't always impressed in terms of quality... or even scent. The days of stinky designer knock-off perfumes are over! Brands like ALT. are all over your Instagram feed. If you've seen the ads but been scared to give these brands a try, try checking out online reviews, including blog posts and video scent try-ons.

If you

have never experimented with red makeup, you're probably not alone. It's a daunting hue. While a red lip is a classic, most are afraid they can't pull it off. Red nails are timeless, but it can feel like a very vampy choice for a Tuesday afternoon. Never mind red eyeshadow! But red makeup is very much on trend, and it's actually much more wearable than you may think. A subtle swipe of red or cranberry shadow can enhance warm-hued eyes. Red blush is stunning on darker skin tones. And a red tint or gloss looks great on just about any pout. Red is a power color that commands attention anywhere it's used. So step out of the shadows! Check out these red-hot hues and let your imagination run wild this month... by Amanda Harper

One problem that has plagued beauty mavens since the advent of red lipstick has been picking the right shade for their skintone. Red Eye

Don't believe you can pull off a red eye look? Think again! The key to making it work for you is a gentle hand. If you'd like to try red eyeshadow, select a shade that works with your undertone and swipe it into the crease, then surround it with neutrals. Wine hues work great for just about anyone, and serve as a stunning twist on a smokey eye for date night. If you have green, hazel or brown eyes, a subtle red or reddish-brown eyeliner or mascara will enhance your eyes. If you have medium-to-dark skin, red concealer might be the answer to your dark circles or patches. It can cancel out greenish, bluish tones under your eyes.

why you should definitely hire a

we g pl ner BY HALEY NORRIS, HALEY MICHELLE DESIGNS

After years and years of envisioning your dream wedding day you finally said, “Yes!” to your number one man and it’s time to actually plan this thing. You’re probably wondering where to even begin. You’re asking yourself, “What do I do first?”, “When do we want to get married?”, “How am I going to get everything done?” This is where a Wedding Planner comes in. If you’re imagining J.Lo with her perfectly sleek pony in The Wedding Planner movie, it is possible to have your very own fabulous ceremony on the big day right here in Central Kentucky!

54

TOPS in Lexington | February 2022

So, what does a Wedding Planner actually provide? From partial planning to full service, they all have one thing in common; becoming your partner-in-crime during the entire planning process. If you decide to hire a Wedding Planner, here are some of the services they can offer to make your wedding journey as stress-free as possible: Vendor Search/Recommendat ions If you’re at the beginning of your planning and need help researching different vendors before booking, having a planner is the perfect resource. Most wedding planners will have a “preferred vendor” list of vendors they’ve previously worked with and enjoy working with. They can provide you with a suggested list based on your vision, style and budget which can help narrow down your search from the start! Venue Walk-Through Once you’ve decided on a venue, a Wedding Planner can do an actual walk-through with you to help plan overall venue layout, reception floor plans and guest flow for your wedding. Having a game plan of how your guests will move from ceremony to cocktail hour and into reception will help create a seamless event for everyone! Floral Planning/Vision Assistance If you’re still searching for a florist, a Wedding Planner can help you create a floral plan and “vision” for your big day. This pulls all of your ideas into one cohesive plan that you can then take to different florists for quotes and opinions! They are, of course, the pros, and can offer suggestions on how to bring that vision to life while also staying within budget.

Overall Wedding Design Your pinterest board is probably jam packed with all the gorgeous inspiration you have for your wedding decor. Sometimes it’s hard to bring those ideas to life for your own wedding. Questions like, “where can I rent that chair?”. “What color tablecloth should I do?”, “How should I decorate my ceremony welcome table?” all come to mind. These are the details a Wedding Planner can help compile for you into one cohesive design plan so that your wedding turns out just the way you envisioned it, and maybe better! Wedding Timeline Creat ion A huge bonus to having a Wedding Planner is having help creating your overall timeline for the big day. Basically from start to finish there will be a plan for all of your vendors to keep track of so that nothing falls through the cracks. Deadlines are necessary for makeup and hair completion, ceremony start time, reception entrance, cake-cutting time, etc. Vendor Communicat ion Does communicating with all of your vendors, keeping track of contracts, payment deadlines and meetings overwhelm you? Then a Wedding Planner is just what you need! A planner can be your main source of communication between you and your vendors so that you don’t have to stress about the small details and logistics of your wedding day. All you need to do is focus on the fun! Budget Creat ion/Guidance A wedding budget. One of the more stressful issues in planning a wedding. If you’re having trouble deciding on an overall budget and how much should go where, then having a Wedding Planner will help ease this process as they will know average costs and ways to save and plan for your main priorities. Wedding Rehearsal and Day of Coordinat ion One of the biggest perks of having a Wedding Planner is that they are also your “day-of” coordinator. You get to wake up on your wedding day and not have to worry about anything other than enjoying every second and living in the moment. A Planner will keep your timeline on track, along with your other vendors and make sure your wedding day goes off without a hitch! Decor Set up and Breakdow n A lot of wedding planners will assist in decor setup and breakdown if that’s something that is not provided by your venue or food vendor. This is a huge help in making sure your vision comes to life on the big day. Sign placement, table decor, etc. can all be taken care of by your planner and allow your Mom or Aunt Judy enjoy the day right by your side!

REAL WEDDING

& e nd A n l co in L

story by amanda harper photos by laura foote photography

A sentimental family vacation spot created a magical wedding day for one Lexington couple. Ande and Lincoln were born and raised in Lexington, and both attended the University of Kentucky. They met through mutual friends in the spring of 2018. When it came to planning their wedding, there was really only one choice for the location in Ande’s mind. “The Gasparilla Inn & Club has been a second home for my family for generations,” she explained. “I have dreamt of getting married there for years!” “The best advice I think you can give someone who is planning a wedding is to decide what areas are most important to you as a couple and focus on those first. We knew all of our guests were traveling to celebrate with us, so my biggest priority was that they enjoyed their time on the island,” Ande advised. One of the couple’s favorite moments was during the welcome party on Friday evening. Sundy Best performed on the beach at sunset. Ande said, “The entertainment, amazing seafood, bourbon bar and cigar rolling tables created such a fun mix of Kentucky and Florida. It was the perfect way to kick off our weekend!” Their ceremony was held on Banyan Street in Boca Grande. Along the drive, the arched banyan trees create a stunning canopy. “It’s already such a magical spot, so we just wanted the enhance that with florals,” she said. The couple wanted the details to feel “clean and elevated” for the reception. They focused on light blues, whites and rattan accents, a perfect complement to the locale. They worked with their rental vendor to find the pretty palm pattern used throughout the cocktail hour and reception, gracing everything from linens to the stage front. Vivant also built a custom entrance leading from the dining space to the dance floor,

modeled to match the architecture in the room. Their florist then brought everything together, stringing greenery across the ceiling of the entire space. Ande changed into a second dress for the reception. Her mother had actually worn it to her own rehearsal dinner! “My sisters and I always loved trying it on when we were little, so it was really special getting to wear it at my wedding,” Ande gushed. The earrings she wore were borrowed from her grandmother. “I went over to her house the morning of the wedding and picked them out with her,” she recalled. “They were not only stunning but went perfectly with my dress.”

gh ei l sh A Webb

&

story by amanda harper photos by josephine clarke photography

While Ashleigh and Webb have known each other since first grade, their love story began in October of their senior year of high school. They dated long-distance through college until she moved back to Lexington shortly after graduation. Ashleigh had grown up going to Idle Hour Country Club her entire life and had always wanted to get married outdoors in the fall. She loved that the venue brought together the beauty she envisioned for her day with the cherished memories of time spent there. The October date also allowed their out-of-town guests to experience some of the best of our city, including tailgating a Kentucky football game. The pair wanted to spend as much time together as possible on their wedding day. “It gave us so much peace to be able to see and experience the day beside each other and so many of our friends and family who had poured into our relationship over the years,” the bride recalled. “As we were doing our first look with our dog, Tantor, the band was beginning to soundcheck our first dance song. We laughed and danced and felt all the stress of the day melt away.” Ashleigh wanted to honor her late grandmother, who had been married 70 years prior. “Her wedding dress immediately came to mind,” the bride explained. “My flower girl was her greatgranddaughter, so we made our flower girl dress out of Nana’s wedding gown! We surprised my dad and uncles with the dress on the big day. Seeing their faces light up was truly the icing on the cake of an incredible day.” The reception décor was designed to accentuate the beauty and history of Idle Hour’s existing architecture. Small touches of florals and greenery highlighted the beauty of the original 1920s-era building. The couple also aimed to utilize as much of the grounds as possible, allowing guests to mingle and take in the stunning venue.

February 2022 | TOPSinLex.com

The couple opted to have a private dinner while their guests enjoyed the cocktail hour. “It gave us the ‘catch our breath’ moment we didn’t realize we so desperately needed,” Ashleigh said. “We got to go mingle with our guests without having to worry about missing dinner. It was a sweet moment to share our first meal together as a married couple.” For couples planning their own weddings, Ashleigh advises picking the “pillars” to your day – non-negotiables that should always come first. “For us, it was our family and friends; bridal parties; officiant and location. We allowed the rest to fall into place,” she said. “We wanted to be focused on planning our marriage rather than our wedding.”

REAL WEDDING

Andrea & Corey

story by amanda harper photos by martin ngo

Andrea Walker is a fixture of Lexington media from her role as a WKYT news anchor, but this Kentucky girl had an incredible moment in the spotlight as a bride in Yosemite National Park. Andrea and her husband, Corey Rich, were set up on a blind date through coworkers. Andrea asked former WKYT Sports Director Dick Gabriel if his son, Jack, had “any tall friends.” Jack set her up with this old roommate – and fellow Kentucky State Police trooper – Corey. The pair were born and raised in Kentucky. Andrea is from Jessamine County, while Corey grew up in Grant County. They even attended EKU at the same time, though they never crossed paths. Corey and Andrea love to travel, so they knew a destination wedding was the right choice. They fell in love with Yosemite after watching the documentary Free Solo. With just twelve guests, the couple got to explore one of the most beautiful places in the country on an intimate trip with their loved ones. The remote location posed a few problems, however. “My husband is a saint,” Andrea said. “He drove me nearly two hours away to get a spray tan the day before the ceremony!” The couple wanted their wedding to be unique and stunning. El Capitan served as the breathtaking backdrop for their big moment. Andrea’s brother and Corey’s sister stood by the couple during the ceremony. Jack was the only person in attendance who wasn’t a member of their families; he served as the officiant. Andrea wore hiking boots beneath her gown, allowing her to make the trek. As a heartwarming touch, she attached pictures of her lost loved ones to her bouquet to have them with her in spirit.

Their wedding photographer specializes in Yosemite weddings. He captured the beauty of the surroundings and the touching moments from the big day. The couple had hoped to take sunset photos at Taft Point, but the roads were closed due to snow. Still, they ended up with a truly unforgettable wedding album! What many don’t know is that the pair was already legally married before the ceremony. Meteorologist Jim Caldwell officiated their legal wedding in the WKYT parking lot. Bill Bryant and Kristen Kennedy were their witnesses while Meteorologist Ally Blake took photos and video. It was a sweet moment that helped Andrea share memories with her work family.

REAL WEDDING

JaNae & Troy

story by taylor riley photos by two hearts media

A Louisville couple went from stranges to friends, to partners before their “Garden Love Story” themed wedding in September. JaNae Martin-Thornton and Troy Thornton had an emotional journey to the altar, including a death in the family from Covid-19 mere weeks before the big day. JaNae and Troy were both born and raised in Louisville; the groom, a machinist, has deep family roots in the historic Smoketown neighborhood, and the bride is a proud Louisville Central High School and University of Louisville alum. The couple met a few times before they had a love connection; they were friends first, evolving into partners and then “soulmates that we could never leave behind,” JaNae a legal administrator, says. The couple was one of the first to book their venue, the Waterfront Botanical Gardens, for a wedding - they chose it standing in a construction zone at the site, but as it moved forward, the venue became “absolutely everything we envisioned,” says JaNae. “We could not have asked for a more breathtaking and pristine venue: The thousands of flowers, the waterfalls, the gardens, the butterflies and colors. It fits magically with our Garden Love Story theme.” The theme incorporated floral, romantic and modern hues of sangria, berries, magenta and blush. The wedding did not go on without a hitch, unfortunately. The grandmother of the bride passed away from Covid-19 a few weeks before the wedding, marring a beautiful occasion with heartache and incorrigible grief. “My grandmother, Cecelia Jones, was nothing short of amazing,” JaNae says. “she was a leader in our community, full of wisdom and joy. She was beautiful in every sense.” Cecelia had a hand in the marriage leading up to her death; when the couple was engaged on New Year’s Day 2020, Cecelia led a prayer to the family and even picked out JaNae’s dress for the ceremony. Jumping the Broom is an age-old African-American wedding ceremony tradition that JaNae and Troy performed during their nupitals. Cecelia was assigned but never finished making the broom for the couple, although she said she was working on it before her death. The bride looked everywhere inside and outside her grandmother’s home for the handmade broom. “It breaks my heart that I couldn’t find it,” she says. “it’s missing, just like the gaping loss that I feel when I think of her.”

February 2022 | TOPSinLex.com

79

The bride carried on and made the broom from materials found in her grandmother’s garden and her art supplies. “That broom means the world to us,” she says. “It is pieces of her and it is a culmination of our love, pieced together and rooted in faith and a persistence to keep going, even through grief, heartbreak and loss.” Other favorite moments from the ceremony included the bride’s captivating entrance to Ave Marie, In Prelude C Major played by renowned and local violinist Keith Cook. “The beautiful sounds accompanied by the sounds of the waterfall, that set the backdrop to the ceremony, still give us chills,” she says, mentioning the groom cried for the majority of the ceremony. Two memorial chairs were created for the bride’s father, CPL United States Marine Corp. James R. Breckenridge, Sr., and for the bride’s grandmother. The garden incorporated hundreds of flowers blowing in the September evening breeze and sparkling water fountains gave an ambiance that was described by the bride as “enchanting”. During the reception, a slideshow was shown with personal well-wishes from the couple’s closest family and friends. “This was absolutely the funniest part of the night,” she says. “Some of the videos were hilarious and the words expressed will forever be in our hearts.” From start to finish, the couple’s day was everything they hoped and prayed for. JaNae says the guest experience was what mattered most to them. “That our guests were able to come together, in a post-vaccine but still very real pandemic and celebrate our love story was all that mattered in our eyes,” she says. “That night, we just couldn’t stop talking about the beauty of the ceremony and the epic party that followed.” JaNae lends her advice to other couples planning their day, saying they should work together during the process, as she did with Troy. “It is important to assign tasks to (each) spouse and to get their opinion every step of the way, no matter how big or small, that way, the day is equally special to both parties, and it is truly a joint effort,” she says. “It means that much more when it is done that way.”

TRENDS TOPSinLex.com | February 2022

83

Rethinking Florals Many couples are moving away from the lush, sweeping arrangements of the past few years and focusing on smaller, curated blooms in similar color palettes. This monochromatic look is decidedly more minimalistic, but equally stunning. As supply chain issues impact the availability of flowers, many couples are opting for more greenery. Baby’s breath – once considered “filler” – is taking center stage in a big way, and the result is absolutely stunning!

Groovy The 1970s have been popping up in home décor for a while, and the decade is finally working its way into weddings. From corduroy textures to pressed florals, this throwback look is huge right now. Expect to see rattan details, palm fronds and retro patterns popping up in weddings this year.

Wedding Weekend The wedding weekend has always been an unofficial celebration, with family get-togethers and rehearsal dinners leading up to the big day and an intimate sendoff brunch to follow. But more couples are choosing to make these events a part of the fun for everyone.

84

February 2022 | TOPS in Lexington

85

Cocktail Receptions Rather than hosting a large, sit-down meal, many couples are opting for receptions that feature only cocktails and passed appetizers. This creates a very interactive experience. As a bonus for the couple, it also requires much less planning.

Grab and Go Bars To ease the flow of traffic through the reception – and to keep guests happy – more couples are choosing to set up stations of “help yourself” prepared drinks and eats. This alleviates bottlenecks at the bar and lets guests nosh as they’re feeling peckish. From mini margaritas and buckets of hard seltzers to sliders or sushi, this reception trend is popular for good reason!

Backdrop Walls We all know the power of an accent wall in home décor. That concept is being transferred to weddings! These huge statement backdrops create a focal point, whether in the ceremony or reception space. They make wonderful spots for photos and selfies. From large scale boxwood walls (often with a custom neon sign) to custom archways, champagne displays and more, this idea is one that allows for a lot of creativity.

Statement Accessories As couples seek to have truly unique weddings, no detail goes unnoticed. That includes what they wear. Brides are opting for stunning capes, eye-catching earrings, quirky headpieces and more. Grooms are wearing bold socks, colorful jackets and fanciful footwear.

Interactive Entertainment Couples are focusing now, more than ever, on their guests’ enjoyment of the big day, opting for “wow” moments during the reception. They’re rethinking wedding entertainment. Rather than hiring one DJ or band for the night, they’re hiring multiple entertainers, stationing them in different areas. A jazzy cocktail hour might be followed by a string band for first dances, then a DJ for the late-night fun. Other couples are including off-the-beaten-path entertainment, like tarot readers, live painters, professional dancers – even video games! They’re also finding ways to create surprises that will have guests talking for months, like confetti or balloon drops.

Destination Celebrations People are ready to travel, and that means destination weddings are very on-trend. Whether they’re traveling to their favorite vacation spots or somewhere they’ve never been before, couples are sharing their adventures with guest lists of all sizes. While intimate elopements are still the most common destination wedding event, more and more couples are returning to larger parties as vaccination rates go up.

Comfy Seating A lot of weddings are steering toward more comfortable seating, especially as they veer away from the traditional seated meal. “Ultra-lounge” style seating areas with plush couches are a common sight, as well as comfortable Adirondack chairs around fire pits. From poufs to chair cushions on benches, couples are thinking about guests’ comfort this year.

Custom Timelines Couples are rewriting all of the rules for wedding celebrations this year, and the traditional schedule is going out the window. They’re especially focusing on spending more time together during their big day, from first look moments to intimate dinners during the guests’ cocktail hour. This extends to the entire wedding weekend: many guests are having welcome blow-out bashes, more intimate cocktail receptions, then elegant, seated send-off brunches. •

Brooklinen Super-Plush Bath Towel Bundle $69/2 brooklinen.com (left)

Care tips:

Skip fabric softeners and dryer sheets when laundering your towels: this adds a residue that reduces the absorbency. Dryer balls with a drop or two of your favorite essential oil is all you need! Don't use bleach. Instead, put a cup of white vinegar in the wash with your towels once a month. This will help remove oils and residue from the towels, keeping them absorbent and fresh-smelling. Hang towels on a bar rather than a hook for the fastest drying time, or use a towel warmer. The longer a towel is wet, the more likely it is to get funky. Bath towels should be washed every three to five uses. Oversized bath sheets offer more warmth and a larger size, which means more snuggling. Regular bath towels are easier to launder. As the name suggests, hand towels are for drying your hands!

Your popularity will soar in 2022, but don’t be afraid to do what’s best for you and end relationships that feel draining. This will allow space for new relationships and maybe even an unexpected love connection. Embrace the opportunity new connections bring, and you may find yourself in the arms of true love. If you’re already in a relationship, this is the year to deepen your connection and try new, exciting things.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

Get ready to be a #boss this year, Gemini! 2022 is the year you will experience professional greatness along with a new level of balance and stability in your life. Your networking will pay off as the connections you’ve nurtured throughout your career will come back to help you achieve your goals. Be bold with your career moves, and you could be handsomely rewarded for working smarter, not harder. Along with all this professional success, try to center yourself and find comfort in the quiet. It’s okay to be comforted by your own presence, whether you’re currently in a relationship or not. Don’t give up on the life you envision for yourself, and practice meditation to find your center. This will allow you to find a healthy partner who will act as an emotional support system for you.

Cancer (June 21 - July 22)

Cancer, prepare to show your wild side in 2022. You’re going to be a little social butterfly, attending events and deeply connecting with others. You’ll find inspiration for your new lifestyle through traveling outside your comfort zone, experiencing new media, and learning. Make sure to take care of your mental health along the way, though, so you don’t experience burnout! Set yourself free mentally this year and realize your authentic self.

By discovering new connections, you could be helping your career. Find ways to set yourself apart from competitors and take risks; try out new ideas, and you will be applauded for your innovative thinking! Keep your suitcase handy because you might be needing it later in the year for a work project - traveling outside your comfort zone, maybe?

Leo (July 23 - August 22)

What a time to be a Leo! This year is going to be full of celebration, joy, partnerships, personal growth, freedom, and exploration for you. Although your year will bring abundance, you’ll still face some difficulties. It will be important to find a balance between getting caught up in these difficult moments and completely avoiding them. Find peace in the chaos you experience, and you will start to see the beauty in life. You can also expect to experience major career developments doing what you love. Contemplate how you want to be seen in your industry and establish yourself in a leadership role. Focus on what you deserve from your long, hard work, then aim for your goal and prove you were meant to be in your role. Doing this may bring an exciting opportunity your way!

Virgo (August 23 - September 22)

Whether you’ve doubted relationships, friends, or your career, discontent will be a thing of the past this year. 2022 is going to be a year full of transformational change and high expectations (guess that trend isn’t changing for you). Get comfortable in doing what’s best for your energetic well-being, and you will be blessed with expansion in multiple areas of your life. Throw that Virgo caution to the wind and take a chance on romance if you’re single, or keep the spark alive by exploring independent interests if you’re in a relationship. Whatever you are, the term “power couple” is coming through in 2022. You’ve been heavily grinding in your career, and your payoff is near! You’re going to receive support from colleagues and bring a passion project to life. No one is going to get in the way of your successful year unless it’s you, Virgo. Make sure to ask for help or guidance on projects if you need it or you could see yourself sliding right back to where you were.

Libra (September 23 - October 22)

Get ready to live drama-free and turn to self-care this year, Libra. You’re going to leave your self-deprecating behavior in the past and treat this year as an opportunity to develop healthy habits and get to know yourself on a more intimate level. Don’t be afraid to love yourself, and you will see your life begin to flourish around you! Allowing the creativity you find in your personal life to carry over to your professional life may lead to a new, better work environment or a new job entirely. This new role could help you find your dream home, invest in crypto, or fund your

own business venture. Master your craft, and you’ll be sure to end up as an expert in your field in 2022.

Scorpio (October 23 - November 21)

Scorpio, say goodbye to the old you and hello to the new and improved you! Whether you think you’re ready or not, reinvention will be a big trend for you in 2022. Much of your current identity was created by the pain you experienced in the past, but this year you will develop an authentic sense of self. You’ve allowed too many people to drain you of your energy, so focus on getting what you deserve. Doing this may lead you to a relationship with someone who builds your confidence instead of taking it. The recent rollercoaster that is your personal life has been affecting your professional life, as well. Make sure to set objectives this year and stick to them, avoiding behaviors that may lead you astray. Your newfound confidence will motivate you to strive for professional success, allow you to ask for a raise, or get that big promotion!

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21)

It’s time for you to rest and relax this year after your nearly two-year soul transformation. Your spirit is changing, Sagittarius, and it’s calling out for you to revisit childhood dreams and to find new ways of enjoying your life. This year you can breathe a little deeper, take a few welldeserved days off work, and add a sip more sugar to your coffee because your life is going to take a satisfyingly mellow turn. Finding a good work-life balance will allow your relationships to thrive and even rekindle an old flame. Invest your energy in your work, and, in turn, profitability and attention will be brought your way. Just because profitability is a trend this year doesn’t mean you should go out and spend it all; tighten up your budget and truly appreciate the hard work you’ve been doing.

Capricorn (December 22 - January 19)

If you feel like you’ve been caught in a pattern of holding grudges, grief, or resentment, you’re probably right, but get ready for all that to change in 2022. This year you’re going to gain a new perspective on life and start to step out of your comfort zone. Once you start treating yourself like you would a friend, it’ll be easier to accept kindness and support from others. When it comes to romance, let your guard down and show your feelings to a passionate partner, and you will likely get the same feelings in return. Be sure to speak up at work this year, and you could be rewarded with a fulfilling promotion or a raise. You may even receive a job offer that will bring you major success! Whatever you’re doing professionally, Capricorn, keep it up; your diligence is sure to pay off this year.

At his firm Family Wealth

Group, Financial Advisor, Donald E. Bentley guides clients through the most critical financial planning services for making their dreams come true — including income planning, tax planning, investment planning, social security planning and estate planning. For Family Wealth Group’s clients, these services are central to the financial future. For Bentley, they’re a chance to combine his greatest passions. “I’m a people person and I love to help and serve people,” Bentley explained. “Also, my mother was a teacher and my father worked in the banking industry for over 35 years, so I got the best of both of my parents to be in this industry for over 25 years myself, teaching and serving people.” For those who find themselves at the point of one of the most critical financial transitions — preparing for retirement — Bentley and his team offer a wealth of experience in helping clients achieve that “work option” goal. And for anyone considering the help of a financial advisor, it’s worth considering Bentley’s advice. “Be patient in your search for an advisor and make sure that they are as well,” he said.

“At the Family Wealth Group,

we believe everyone should be able to live the retirement they’ve always wanted,” explained Jeff Sheppard, a Financial Advisor with the firm. “Our team of financial service professionals can help you create a wellthought-out strategy, using a variety of investments and insurance products designed to help you address your financial needs and concerns.” Sheppard has been doing just that for countless local clients over nearly a decade, ever since he got a phone call from Family Wealth founder Kevin Meltzer. He became a client of the firm, then learned more about how its services could help the people of Kentucky. That ignited a passion in him to help others with the financial services that had helped him. “Many hard-working families in Kentucky have spent 20, 30, even 40 years or more at the same job, doing the same skill and they are ready to transition into a new season of their life,” Sheppard said. “Our team at Family Wealth Group gets to surround that family and help them understand what that transition looks like. We get to celebrate great milestones and we get to mourn difficult news that life throws at us. Through it all, we get to help families go through these seasons of their lives.”

As a fiduciary, the firm ensures complete transparency and holds the responsibility to always act in the client’s best interest. Their dedicated team of industry professionals will ask questions, listen to the client’s concerns, and work behind the scenes to find solutions. With the client’s permission, they will also reach out to other professionals, such as accountants or attorneys, to provide an integrated approach and attempt to ensure maximum benefit. The Family Financial Partners team has been serving Lexington for 16 years and seeks to help organize your financial life through personalized retirement planning, investment planning, estate planning and wealth transfer goals, as well as insurance and tax planning. Senior Partner David Smyth loves witnessing people realize their financial goals and the peace of mind that comes with it. The FFP team shares the belief that “professional management of your finances is the driving force behind longterm financial stability. Your hard-earned assets exist to provide a safety net and income for the rest of your life, and if you wish, an income stream for generations to come.” It’s easy to be overwhelmed and not know where to start. McKellar Ciurlizza, MBA, Director of Client Services suggests working “with someone who can help you prioritize, coordinate, and organize those goals. Most importantly, choose a professional that will hold you accountable and keep you on a consistent path towards success.” What can you do in 2022? Paraplanner Ryan Petrunyak recommends that “the best day to sit down and start a plan for retirement is today, no matter where you are in life. The sooner you can start planning for where you want to go, the easier it will be to get there in the long run.”

a boutique wealth planning firm, Acuity Wealth Management prides itself on its ability to focus on the unique needs of individual clients while offering comprehensive financial planning that includes estate and legacy planning, portfolio management, tax planning, retirement planning, risk management, 401ks, endowment and foundations, and charitable giving. “The mantra that we live by at Acuity, while admittedly corny, is the foundation of everything we do: ‘Clients don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care,’” said Wealth Advisor, Siegfreid Lauren. “It is rewarding to help clients achieve financial security in whatever form that comes. I am humbled and grateful that they put that trust in me.” With both parents working in healthcare, Siegfreid thought he’d go into the medical field. But he enjoyed creating relationships so much that he found wealth management to be a better way to pursue his passion for meeting new people and becoming like family. “The best part of my job is learning your dog’s name,” he said. “Retirement planning and putting your financial life in order should be fun! Working with the right team is critical in achieving that. I will be eternally grateful to my clients for allowing me to be a part of that process.”

founded

in the early 1900s in Pikeville, Community Trust Bank has grown exponentially — now offering loans, a range of personal and business banking services and investment guidance — but maintains its focus on serving its hometown region. When asked about the most rewarding part of his work, Andy Jarvis, a Community Trust senior vice president and senior lender for the Central Kentucky region, summed up this focus perfectly. “Being a part of making someone’s dreams become a reality is the most rewarding part of what I do,” he said. This focus on customer success was also apparent as Jarvis provided his go-to advice for this year. “Picture your perfect 2022,” he said, “set reasonable financial goals, and then be persistent in achieving those goals.” With 79 banking locations that stretch from Kentucky to West Virginia and Tennessee, Community Trust Bank has seen its dedication to clients pay off over the last 118 years. And with team members like Jarvis at the helm, there’s no signs of that changing any time soon.

started my banking career in college and it quickly became my focus and passion,” explained Cathy Taylor, a vice president and market senior loan officer for Community Trust Bank, one of Central Kentucky’s oldest financial institutions. “I enjoy the ever-changing banking environment and all of the opportunities that it has brought during my career.” Taylor has experience in every facet of banking, but has particularly invaluable expertise in retail banking, operations and security functions. This comes in handy at Community Trust Bank, which offers a myriad of services to customers, including mobile banking, numerous deposit products and retail and commercial lending services. But at the end of the day, as long as relationships are being formed and her neighbors are getting the best possible service, Taylor is more than happy in doing whatever is asked of her. “Relationships have been the most rewarding thing throughout my career, I have had the pleasure of working for and with so many great people over the years,” she said. “Lexington is my home and my customers are my friends and neighbors.”

But ultimately, his financial advice comes down to some tried and true basics. ‘’The financial world never sits still, it’s constantly changing,” he said. “But you should continue to do the things that have been successful in the past. someone mentions a credit union, what is the first thought that comes to your mind? It’s likely financial products such as checking accounts, auto loans and credit cards. “the

financial field is exciting every day,” Ben Fryman affirms. “Every day I’m interacting with clients and employees—analyzing different strategies, structures, architecture, markets, business plans, local cultures and history. Solid communication, building strong relationships with individuals and having the ability to problem solve can be the greatest skills to help you reach success, and they make finance fun.” Fryman excels in his position as vice president of commercial lending at Bank of the Bluegrass & Trust Co. “Because of my experience with the small business lending and the commercial real estate market in multiple counties and regions throughout Kentucky, I’ve had the opportunity to develop the right loan structures to support my clients in reaching different goals for their investments.” Bank of the Bluegrass, a locally owned and independent community bank, works with clients on SBA, real estate and construction loans, working capital lines of credit and letters of credit. For almost 50 years, they’ve provided Lexingtonians with commercial lending services— committed to providing financial strength, best-in-class technology and dedicated service to their clients and local community. Fryman explains, “The field of finance allows us to engage with people in our communities every day and make an impact through knowledge, teamwork, strategy or just by appreciating their individual stories, and I love it for that reason. The key is to stay educated, have short- and long-term plans to achieve your goals and keep trusted financial partners at hand.”

But when it comes to one of the largest financial decisions for most of us, Topley offered some key advice. “People don’t understand that the largest purchase most of them will make in their lives is the purchase of retirement,” he said. “For most everyone, the cost of retirement will be two to four times larger than the cost of their home. Bank provides an astounding range of deposit, loan and treasury management services — everything from business money market accounts and sweep accounts to business lines of credit and investment real estate. So it’s understandable why Larry Forester, Senior Vice President with Forcht, wants to clarify that he and his colleagues are much more active than many might think. “The biggest misconception about the finance field is that bankers just sit at their desks all day from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.,” he joked. “We are a relationship-driven industry, which calls for building relationships outside of the bank.” Forester is most proud of the way that his job can make dreams come true, while allowing him to give back to the community where he lives. And when it comes to offering go-to advice for those looking to gain better control of their finances this year, his philosophy is clear. “Don’t sacrifice savings for short-term happiness!” he urged.

celebrating 100 years of serving clients at a local and personal level, Edward Jones has become one of the most renowned and trusted fullservice brokerage companies in Central Kentucky and beyond. And while that means many within the organization have a clear description for their job titles, Casey A. Bright looks at it a different way. Telling people that he is a financial advisor may not answer their questions about what services he provides for clients. Casey aims to provide a financial picture for clients similar to the front of a puzzle box. Everyone’s financial future is made of different elements, so he works to help clients understand how to reach their big picture goals with one piece at a time. Bright starts with the corner pieces: retirement planning, estate and legacy, protection for the unexpected and emergency cash. Then he works to build something lasting and flexible from there. Working in finance has taught Casey that financial planning is about more than just money. He helps clients to prepare for big moments in life, such as paying for a wedding, a funeral for a parent, saving for college and buying a first home.

meridian

is a continuous leader in the field of financial advising and wealth management. “Leadership is who we are,” Vice President and advisor, Suzanne Powell, said. “It is intrinsic to all the advisors and staff at Meridian Wealth Management.” In the 12 years since Greg Couch founded Meridian Wealth Management, the company has built a team of 21 licensed advisors to serve clients all over the U.S. With approximately $1.85 billion in assets under management (as of 11/11/2021), the Meridian advisors provide comprehensive fiduciary advice and objective guidance for clients that range from professional athletes and retirees to business owners and institutions. Industry leaders at Meridian focus on the changing needs of individuals and create services to fill those voids. Seeing a demand in the market for aging baby boomers to receive transparent, unbiased advice, Suzanne stepped up to lead Meridian’s office in The Villages in Florida—which caters to clients 55 and up, who need the peace of mind that comes from working with a skilled fiduciary advisor. Suzanne is enthusiastic about empowering women with the knowledge they need to make informed financial moves, and recently published her book The Ultimate Money Moves for Women over 50 (available at Suzannepowell.com/book). As financial advisors, the Meridian team strives to serve not only their clients, but the communities where they live and work. They believe a dedication to service through mentorships, coaching and fundraising are just as important as the advising they do in a business setting. In the end, the top priority is always the client. Powell adds, “We love that our clients have the opportunity to live their best lives because of the planning and guidance that we bring to every advisory client relationship.” Suzanne and Chris attribute their exceptional ability to work together to their shared goal of helping people and making a difference in the world, which gave them confidence to join forces in business. This couple utilizes Suzanne’s experience as a financial advisor, paired with Chris’s knowledge of the insurance industry to serve their clients at Meridian Wealth Management. His homegrown outlook and years of experience in the field have given him a perspective about finance that is more humancentric than most. “I believe a lot of people think that the finance field is only about numbers,” Kidd said. “While this is a significant part of the field, I feel as though people skills are more important. I think the ability to effectively communicate with your client and prospects while developing strong relationships is more important than your spreadsheet skills.”

Cumberland Valley National Bank (CVNB) franchise is focused on serving Central Kentucky through 14 branches across the region, where its team members help their neighbors find outstanding financial products and customer service. Embodying this community focus as an Assistant Vice President for Commercial Lending is David Snyder, who found his fit with CVNB through relationships he formed playing for the University of Kentucky’s golf team. Today, Snyder continues to form long-standing relationships in the Lexington area, and works to propel the community focus that makes CVNB special. “Community banking holds a special place in the economy,” Snyder explained. “Unlike larger national banks, community banks are focused on helping people achieve financial health and also supporting the growth of our communities.” Of course, this genuine care for clients means that Snyder often offers advice that can help their financial wellbeing. Particularly in the current climate, that can be invaluable. “As inflation rises, it’s never been more important to save and invest to outpace inflation,” he said. “Interest rates are anticipated to rise this year. If you are investing in real estate or refinancing your primary residence, act quickly before rates increase.”

many of the families I work with, I was at a stage in life where I knew what I wanted for my family’s future, but lacked the time and tools to filter all of the competing information in the world of personal finance,” recalled Elizabeth Chatterton, a financial advisor with Northwestern Mutual, when asked how she decided to start her career. “The more I learned, the more my anxiety was replaced with excitement and I recognized that I could help others have the guidance I was looking for.” Working for a top-rated insurance, investment and financial planning company that has been helping Kentucky families and professionals achieve financial security for more than 150 years, Chatterton feels that now, more than ever, her mission of clearing up client anxiety is being fulfilled. “If we have learned anything over the last two years, it is that the unexpected can happen at any time,” she said. “It is difficult to plan for every scenario, but recognizing that life can and will create surprises is an important step to ensuring unpleasant surprises are manageable. “one

of the biggest misconceptions about the finance field is that people believe you must be very wealthy to have a financial plan,” explained Robert Lawson, an Inspired Wealth Advisor with Thrivent Financial. “People in all phases of life need to have a plan, and we believe that all people deserve a plan.” To help carry that belief into reality, Lawson works every day to provide financial advice, investment guidance, insurance and banking services, as well as generosity programs to help clients make the most of all they’ve been given. Wealth Advisors like Brittany Lawson help clients chart paths to retirement, navigate proactive tax strategies, choose insurance, develop the right investment portfolio and more, all with a transparent focus and philosophy that money is a tool, not a goal or destination.

“My parents always talked about money when I was growing up — it was just part of how I was raised,” Lawson said of her entrance into the financial consulting field. “As I got older, I learned that this was not normal and that money was an icky subject to many. But I’m on a mission to change the conversation about money. I want to help people feel comfortable about their finances and instill confidence in their ability to make wise choices.” She’s particularly passionate about helping people utilize their savings — paying for a child’s college tuition, a vacation home or retirement. And there’s no place where she’d rather do that than right here. “Lexington feels like a big small town — always a good meal around the corner and friendly and familiar faces everywhere you go,” she said.

The Lyric Theatre and Cultural Art Center

When it comes to Lexington’s rich history, The Lyric Theatre plays a starring role. Opening in 1948, the original Lyric Theatre was built at a cost of $250,000 and provided air-conditioned entertainment, a luxury at the time. However, unlike other white-owned theatres of the day, it provided open seating for all patrons. According to Lyric Executive Director Whit Whitaker, the theatre served as “a hub of entertainment where African Americans could come to see entertainers who looked like us—with open seating so we were not forced to sit isolated in a balcony while white people, who normally occupied the main floor, enjoyed our Black entertainers” After closing in 1963, the space lay dormant for nearly 50 years. Then, in October of 2010, The Lyric Theatre & Cultural Arts Center opened its doors with a renewed mission “to preserve, promote, present, and celebrate diverse cultures through artistic presentations of the highest quality, educational programming and outreach, film, and opportunities for community inclusion.” For Black performers, the stage holds a special significance. Meredith Frankie Crutcher, a local actor/director/teacher said, “Growing up as a native Lexingtonian, any reference I would hear in relation to The Lyric Theatre spoke of its rich history as a thriving locale where Lexington's Black community was able to enjoy arts and entertainment.” Throughout the years, The Lyric Theatre has hosted some of the nation’s most iconic artists, including comedians Redd Foxx and “Moms” Mabley; musicians Ray Charles, Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, George Clinton Ike and Tina Turner, BB King (and later his daughter Claudette King); and poets and authors Frank X Walker and Dr. Haki Madhubuti. Crutcher had the privilege of gracing the historic stage as Beneatha in Message Theatre's production of A Raisin in the Sun. She stated, “It would be almost a decade postrenovation that I got the opportunity to perform on The Lyric Theatre stage, but the significance of finally getting a chance to become a part of the Lyric's lively history was never lost on me. Being able to grace the stage of the historic Lyric Theatre felt like I was touching the past and the future at the same time.” As for the future of the Lyric, Whitaker said, “The significance of the Lyric going forward is to continue to be an open bridge to connect the different cultural communities, while paying homage to our historic past and continuing to place special cultural emphasis on African American culture, so the African American community and our historic cultural icons of the past can continue to pave the way to a future where our artists and our community will not be forgotten or left behind again.” •

Foundation47 helps youth find financial literacy.

Dale Morgan is an investment analyst, volunteer, motivational speaker, mentor, community leader, advocate and father. Morgan grew up in Lexington, surrounded by poverty. He worked to become a first-generation college student and financial expert. Yet he wanted to do more than simply elevate himself; he wanted to help others. From that, Morgan found his calling: Foundation47,LLC.

Tell us a little bit about you. I’m currently a Finance and Investment analyst for the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government. Prior to that, I was an accountant at Purdue University as well as the University of Kentucky. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Eastern Kentucky University while working as a general laborer in a manufacturing environment and running my own business. I’ve been appointed to the Child Support Guidelines Review Commission and the Small Business Advocacy Commission by Governor Andy Beshear. I serve on the business advisory council for the college of business at EKU. I currently serve on the Charles Young Center Advisory Board, as well as the chair for Partners for Youth, and most recently I was honored by EKU with the 2021 Distinguished Service Award.

What inspired you to start Foundation47? My inspiration for Foundation47,LLC came after I recognized a need for financial education for everyday real-life situations. When I looked back on my K – 12 curriculum, it became apparent to me that I never heard the term “budget” or any other financial term until I got to college. When I was an adolescent living in the housing projects, it never occurred to me that I was living in poverty. This was simply because I didn’t know what poverty was, and since I was unaware, how could I acknowledge that fact?

What is the goal of Foundation47? The goal of Foundation47 is to equip individuals with a greater sense and understanding of real-life financial situations, which will, in turn, put them in a better position to make informed financial decisions that will positively impact their future.

What is your motivation for helping others? My motivation for helping others is the direction and guidance that I yearned for myself as a youth. Coming up as an adolescent, I didn’t have a role model or mentor to INSPIRATIONS SPONSORED BY LG&E

help me navigate through those challenges. I was often left by myself making misinformed important financial and life decisions. Through Foundation47, I can and will help mitigate those situations.

What advice would you have for any parent in raising a financially savvy adult? Instead of giving their children everything that they didn’t have, I recommend teaching them everything that they weren’t taught, starting with personal finance. It could start with something as simple as a kitchen table grocery budget to working for an allowance and saving up to purchase those things they want.

How did you raise your own daughter to have an entrepreneurial mindset? I always tried to instill in Cymone a sense of responsibility and accountability for her own financial independence. I would seize every opportunity – from a car ride to and from school to those long walks in the park – to engage her about budgeting, saving, establishing credit, disposable income, needs and wants... everything that I wished I would have been taught at her age. I always told her that there are 3 ways to make money: 1) Get a job 2) Start a business 3) Invest in the Stock market. I was more than proud of her when she started her own eyelash business, The Butterfly Effect, with money that she had invested.

What is in the future for Foundation47? How can others get involved? My plans for the future are to expand on my reach in Fayette County public school system as well as the colleges and Universities I have facilitated workshops with (Berea College, Northern Kentucky University, Morehead State University, University of Louisville, and Eastern Kentucky University). My future plans also include a team of facilitators reaching across the state of Kentucky. For individuals who want to get involved, their support – along with referrals and recommendations – is always welcomed. •important financial and life decisions. Through Foundation47, I can and will help mitigate those situations. •

May 1, 2021, started out like every other day. I was taking a shower and getting ready for work when I started feeling dizzy. I literally crawled out of the shower and couldn’t stop getting sick. I was able to call 911 and landed in the emergency room where I was diagnosed with vertigo and sent home. I still wasn’t feeling right and returned to the hospital the next day. This time, an MRI showed that I had a stroke in my cerebellum. High blood pressure was the main reason for the stroke. My doctor recommended that I go on meds the year before, but I ignored his advice. Luckily, with this type of stroke, I was able to make a full recovery. Today, I take my medications, exercise, and continue to work on my balance. I always thought I was healthy and didn’t listen to my doctor, so make sure you follow your doctor’s orders. Today, I’m Reclaiming My Rhythm through skiing. I’m not quite as fast as I was before my stroke, but I’m so thankful to be back on the slopes and loving life.

It took a lot of time, effort, and love to get to where I am today after being diagnosed with a heart condition and suffering a stroke. I had just returned to work after giving birth to my youngest child, Zachary, when I felt like I was coming down with a cold. Doctors told me I had double pneumonia and by the next day, I could barely move. My husband rushed me to the hospital where I learned I had cardiomyopathy, a disease that weakens and enlarges a person’s heart. During my stay in the hospital, doctors had to perform emergency surgery after a blood clot in my heart moved and caused me to have a stroke. The stroke left my right side paralyzed and impaired my speech. After months of rehabilitation and 21 years later, I feel like the best version of myself. I eat heathy, exercise, and have regular check-ups with my doctor. Today, I’m Reclaiming My Rhythm by not stressing over the small stuff and enjoying a healthy lifestyle.

Swim, bike, run… repeat! At age 34, I had spent thousands of hours training for triathlons. In March 2020, I was out on a routine run, when I discovered my body just couldn’t do it. I completed an Ironman six months earlier and now, couldn’t run more than a mile without stopping. I was so fatigued that I decided to get checked out. This was when COVID was beginning and getting into see a doctor proved difficult. After continuous respiratory problems and exhaustion, I underwent several tests including an EKG and was advised to see a cardiologist. It turns out I have LGL (Lown-Ganong-Levine Syndrome) … a syndrome that can cause an irregular heartbeat. I’m not sure if this would have been found if I didn’t advocate for myself. Having health issues through this pandemic has been scary, but I am Reclaiming My Rhythm by not giving in. I completed a half-Ironman last year and will do it again this year. My advice is no matter how healthy you are… know your baseline, family history and keep pushing for medical care when you feel something is wrong.

Saturday, January 25, 2020, was the day my life changed forever. I was home alone and knew I was having a stroke from training at work. My speech was slurred, and I couldn’t hold onto anything. I remember feeling so scared and my first thought was… I didn’t want my son to come home and find me lifeless. I couldn’t figure out how to call for help so somehow, I drove to the hospital, praying the whole way that I wouldn’t wreck and hurt anyone. The stroke affected my entire right side, and I am still experiencing numbness in my fingers and face and struggle pronouncing long syllables. I recently returned to work after taking off a little longer than expected due to COVID. Before my stroke, I took care of everyone but me! Today, by the grace of God, I am Reclaiming My Rhythm by saying no to anything that isn’t for me and removing stress that robs me of my peace and joy. I am no longer apologizing for taking care of me. I am important… I matter!

No one expects to be diagnosed with a lifechanging heart condition in middle school. For me, it started as just another ordinary day on the volleyball court, when all of the sudden, I fainted. After coming to, my heart was racing, my vision was blurry, my limbs and face were numb, and I was terrified. My mother rushed me to the emergency room, and a few days and many tests later, I was diagnosed with Non-Classical Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome – a rare disease that causes the heart to beat irregularly due to additional electrical pathways that interrupt its rhythm. While I may not live the life of a typical 14-year-old now, I’m living life in a way that it works for me. Instead of focusing all my time on preparing for sports, I’m developing my passion for music and am learning to play several different instruments. My mom always said my heart marched to the beat of its own drum… now we know that to be true, so I’m Reclaiming My Rhythm by taking good care of myself and staying healthy and active!

“I’m only 52… why am I having a stroke?!” Those were the words that ran through my head on an ordinary day running errands, but try as I might, I couldn’t say them out loud. My vision was blurred, and my strength was gone. I couldn’t even lift the bottle of water that the store clerk brought me. In fact, I couldn’t even manage to take a drink, so they called 911. Thanks to their quick response and the speedy arrival of the EMTs, I was rushed to the hospital and treated for what they later confirmed was in fact, a stroke. Nine long days later, I was released from the hospital with a new outlook on life. Now, I’m taking better care of myself. I have plans to travel and try new things and I’m finally putting myself first. I’m Reclaiming My Rhythm through therapy, self-care, and having FUN! After all, as cliché as it may be to say… You only live once!

There’s nothing like the death of a close friend to make you think about your own mortality. At 65, Dom had a massive heart attack and didn’t make it. It broke my husband’s and my heart, but it also scared us enough that we scheduled cardiac calcium scans immediately, even though we led an active lifestyle, ate well, and believed we were totally healthy. A day later, I received the call... While my arteries were clear, the scan showed that I had an ascending aortic aneurysm. I was shocked! I later learned that my blood pressure was dangerously high, which was likely the cause. Now, I find time to take my blood pressure daily, take my medication, and get exercise no matter what. At my check-up a few weeks ago, my aneurysm was significantly smaller! Thankfully, we took it upon ourselves to be proactive and get scanned, because who knows what would have happened if we didn’t. My advice? Be proactive and realize that you’re in control of your own health… That’s how I’m Reclaiming My Rhythm. Investing just a few minutes of time in YOU can actually save your life!

It was just a bad case of heartburn… or so I thought. After making my way to cycling class that day my symptoms intensified, and I began to feel nauseous and feverish. Then 15 minutes later, my arms began to go numb. Being a neurological physical therapist, I know all of the symptoms of a heart attack and at that point, was almost certain that’s what was happening. My husband later took me to the Emergency Room where my EKG, blood pressure, and heart rate all came back as normal… but my troponin levels were rising rapidly, so I was given a heart catheter and diagnosed with Sudden Coronary Artery Dissection – a spontaneous tearing of my coronary artery wall. Recognizing and acting on those symptoms saved my life that day, and now, I have a new appreciation for my patients and an even stronger desire to help others. While I’ve had to drastically change my lifestyle, I’m Reclaiming My Rhythm by living my life with an even greater purpose, grateful that I’m still here to do God’s work.

Remembering Coach Joe B. Hall by Larry Vaught | photos by Mike Cyrus and courtesy UK Athletics

Almost as soon as he got on campus, John Calipari did everything he could to embrace former Kentucky coach Joe Hall and make him a vital part of the UK program again. Yet in many ways, Calipari insists he got more out of his friendship with Hall than he gave to the former UK coach. “He told me you are in the best situation in the world for basketball [after Calipari got the UK coaching job in 2009],” Calipari said. “He was that guy who wanted the university’s program, the state of Kentucky basketball’s program, to do well. It was nice to have that guy in your corner, and he was always in my corner.” Hall passed away last month at age 93. Hall, a Cynthiana native, played one year at Kentucky for coach Adolph Rupp before transferring. He returned to UK in 1965 as Rupp’s assistant coach and was named Rupp’s successor in 1972

170

— the first-native born Kentuckian to be UK’s head coach since Basil Hayden in 1926-27. He had a 297-100 record at UK before retiring in 1985. His 1977-78 team won the national championship when he was named national coach of the year. His 1974-75 team lost to UCLA in the national title game, and he also took a team to the 1984 Final Four. He won eight Southeastern Conference regular-season championships. Kentucky unveiled a statue of Hall outside Wildcat Coal Lodge in 2012, and his passing brought an outpouring of love from former UK players, UK fans and rivals. Dana Skaggs, a Louisville attorney, is one of many long-time UK fans who never met Hall but still admired him. “As is the case with some folks, I felt like I knew him. A fixture in Kentucky and for BBN,” Skaggs said.

February 2022 | TOPS in Lexington

Former UK point guard Roger Harden said nobody “gave their heart and soul to UK basketball” like Hall did because of his love for Kentucky basketball. “It was an honor to play for him, and I will miss my life-long friend. He was the only friend I ever needed,” Harden said. Hall was remembered by many as a tough, no-nonsense disciplinarian. Jack Givens, the 1978 Final Four MVP after scoring 41 points against Duke in the national title game, got advice from UK All-American Kevin Grevey his freshman year that he never forgot. “He told me not to take it personally when he scolded me. He said he had to learn the same thing,” Givens said. “That was my saving grace throughout my career. But it truly was an honor to play for coach Hall. I grew to appreciate him more and more as I got older. I learned so much from him that had nothing to do with basketball. I am glad I got to be such good friends with him late in life.” Hall should be remembered for a lot more than his wins, including the national championship. — He helped fully integrate the Kentucky basketball program. Two of his biggest recruits were Lexington high school stars Givens and James Lee, but many more followed in his career. He never saw it as a big deal or even a courageous move because he didn’t see white or black athletes. He just wanted players of high character who could help him win. — He got Wildcat Lodge built in 1978. It included perks such as extra-long beds that made life much more comfortable for players but also gave Hall a chance to keep closer tabs on his players. The NCAA later mandated that it could not be a facility for athletes only, so some regular students also became residents. — He started Midnight Madness in 1982, and most thought he was crazy for wanting to have an open practice at 12:01 a.m. the first day the NCAA allowed teams to begin preseason drills. It became a huge event not only at Kentucky, but other schools that started doing the same thing. — Hall had his team play intrasquad scrimmages across the state before every season. He wanted to give fans in remote areas — or fans with no access to tickets — a chance to see their beloved Wildcats play. The NCAA eventually stopped teams from doing this. Hall also did the unthinkable — he followed a legend and succeeded. Rupp had won five national titles and had many UK fans supporting his desire to keep coaching when he

was forced to retire at age 70. Rupp did not attend the press conference introducing Hall as his successor. Rupp was allowed to keep an office in Memorial Coliseum. The former UK coach even had a weekly TV show after his retirement where he did not hesitate to second guess Hall’s coaching decisions. However, Hall persevered in part because he knew Rupp would not just fade away after being forced to retire and did not let that distract him from coaching his team his way. Hall coached seven All-Americans at UK — Grevey, Givens, Rick Robey, Kyle Macy, Sam Bowie, Melvin Turpin and Kenny Walker. “I never thought Joe got enough credit for what he did at Kentucky,” said former LSU coach Dale Brown. “His teams were tough and always well-coached. And following Adolph Rupp, that’s so much harder than anyone today can even imagine. He was just a good man.” Walker understood that, and so did Walker’s parents when Hall came to Georgia to recruit him. Hall sold Walker’s parents on being able to see most of his games on TV if he came to Kentucky. However, he did not guarantee Walker anything. “He told my father I had to come in and prove myself. My dad looked coach Hall in the eye and said, ‘We don’t want you to give him anything. Just make sure if he earns it, you give it to him. I am not going to tell you how to coach him, but if he earns it, you give it to him,’” Walker said. Walker’s father passed away in 1989, and the former UK AllAmerican started looking at Hall as a father figure who was always there “to give advice as a teacher, mentor and friend” long after his UK playing career ended. “He knew what he meant to me and other guys who have known him,” Walker said. “We are all a reflection of his vision of UK basketball and, more importantly, how we represent ourselves as people.” That’s the kind of impact Joe Hall had on a basketball-crazy state and why, thanks in large part to Calipari, Hall became even more beloved by fans in recent years than even was during his successful coaching career. “Coach Joe B. Hall was not only a remarkable basketball legend, he was also a kind, generous leader who made an impact on his players and everyone who knew him,” Gov. Andy Beshear said. •

The 3 Key Reasons You Should Be Doing Social Advertising! The business and retail world is changing rapidly, brickand-mortar businesses are seeing a decline in traffic, and it’s important for businesses to adapt by converting online to generate new sales. Here are three key reasons I believe your business should be leveraging social media advertising in some form and how you can benefit from these strategies.

1.) Hyper-Target Customers Did you know there are over a billion active users on Instagram? There are so many people wondering how to reach more potential clients yet not taking note that a huge percentage of the population is active on social media. Their data is available to business owners and advertisers alike to benefit from. One of the main reasons social media marketing is so effective is that brands can hyper-target ideal clients based on exact demographics. Showing ads to the right individuals is a critical part of the marketing process and must be taken seriously to avoid wasted ad spend.

2.) Build Audiences On top of being able to target specific audiences directly with your marketing, you can then save this data and use it for future campaigns. Building both a social audience and a

176

landing page audience is critical to creating consistent and future success from your marketing efforts by leveraging historical data.

3.) Track ROI Another key tool for marketers that comes from social media advertising is the ability to directly track return on investment from your marketing campaigns. For example, on Facebook, this information is built directly into its Ads Manager platform, making it possible to view your budget's performance and analyze return on ad spend, cost per website purchase, cost per lead and much more at a quick glance. This is huge for advertisers because you can directly track how your ad spend is performing, making it possible to cut undesirable campaigns and scale wellperforming campaigns to bringing even more results. So, there you have it: three solid reasons advertising on social media is important. If you want to keep sales afloat and ensure you have a sustainable business for the long run, you should keep these reasons in mind and start implementing social media advertising as part of your marketing efforts.
