Anita K. Jewelry Designer Anita Khachatourians started her own accessories line in 2013 when she was working at a Fashion PR office in Los Angeles doing styling for photo shoots, red carpets, and runaway shows. She had a great passion for having her own brand of accessories and pieces that she could implement her own style of edginess but keep it elegant and simple. Anita graduated from The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising with a degree in Visual Communications and Business Management. While getting her education in the fashion industry, she was also networking in social media, and doing print modeling for a few companies and fashion shows.

Jewelry design started out as a hobby for Anita when she was drawing designs and hand making pieces that fit her own personal style. She then decided to turn her hobby it into a business and share her collection with everyone. Anita continues to expand Anita K. Jewelry into boutiques such as Patricia Field and LF Stores and big named online retail stores like Karmaloop and Beyond The Rack. She also strives to get her collection into big name department stores and get featured in fashion magazines for her line to be discovered and outreached to everyone.

Buena Onda was one of the “cash and carry” brands. Supporting the Wayuu People of Colombia, Buena Onda provides products that are completely handmade and fair trade. Buena Onda means: “Good Waves” or “Good Vibes.” Typical tradeshows only allow for purchase orders to be placed, forcing the merchandise to be shipped at a later date. Organic Fashion Label Launches New ‘Tissue Knit’ Line for Spring 14 20 Years of Global Green Vision Celebrated with Organic Style Synergy Organic Clothing, a sustainable and conscious womenswear & yoga apparel company is celebrating their 20-year anniversary with the launch of the Spring 2014 Collection. This season introduces a new ‘Tissue Knit’ line, propelling this brand into a much more eco-chic direction. Living and working in a coastal California town, designer, Kate Fisher, drew inspiration from her love of the beach and ocean. Filling a desire to appeal to a larger audience, Spring 2014 focuses more on the style, silhouettes, and materials than in the past. The ‘Tissue Knit’ collection is just as it sounds, a luxurious, lightweight & breathable 100% organic cotton; a prime example of the new path Synergy is on. “I really wanted this collection to have something for every woman – whether it be the Convertible Cardigan for the woman dealing with cooler weather in the Spring, or our Athena Caftan for the lucky ones who get to lay on the beach a bit earlier in the year than most.” Fisher stated, reinforcing her vision for a broader mass appeal.

Over two decades the brand has naturally evolved. Nowhere is that more apparent than the outward appearance of the Synergy look. Even with change in the air, what happens behind the scenes has remained constant. Synergy Organic Clothing keeps their roots deeply planted in the vision of combining Eastern and Western influences. Synergy continues to produce all clothing according to fair trade practices in Nepal; employing 150 women who hand-sew the applique designs. The Spring 2014 Collection is currently available for pre-order in the wholesale market and is expected to be available for retail in March 2014. About Synergy Organic Clothing: Synergy Organic Clothing currently has 3 retail locations, an e-commerce website, a wholesale business to over 600 accounts domestic and internationally, and an extensive festival-selling scene. The company grew by 50% in 2012 alone and prioritizes the responsibility of finding the most eco-conscious way of doing business.

GODS w

ith the wrap up of Fashion Week SS14 in the Fashion Capitals around the world, Designers unveiled the latest trends down the runway. Fashionistas and Fashionisters flocked to shows and scoured the internet to see the birthing of creativity from the designer’s wombs.

When designers anoint us with trends, do they decide what is accepted and rejected through a subjective or objective selection process? When editors, journalists, bloggers, and photographers write and capture, do they decide what is accepted and rejected through their choice of words and angles of photography? Or does the consumer have the final say of what is accepted and rejected through the eternal cycle of supply and demand? Let’s just say that each entity plays a role in determining if a trend is accepted or rejected this season through their input. Each combined creates an ethereal deciding force through “the mere exposure effect”. The mere exposure effect is a psychological term which describes what occurs when one develops a preference for something due to the continuous exposure of it. This ethereal deciding force through the mere exposure effect can be deemed as the “Fashion Gods”. It is safe to say that there is not one single factor that determines what is in trend or not. Factors inside and outside of the fashion industry do have influence. Trends can be predicated on the amount of exposure given.

Editors, journalists, bloggers, and photographers then The Fashion Gods ultimately determine the seasonal Fashion Trends. All celebrated this birthing by writing and capturing praises to the Fashion Gods this season and next! the momentous runway Dawnn Karen, M.A. | Columbia University trends. WHO THE SMASH WE ARE?

Smash! is a brand of clothes and accessories within the “Happy Barcelona Style”. We create our collections for the young and free minded women who want to fill their wardrobe and life with colour, positive energy and fun. At Smash we abhor boredom, and we think every woman deserves to dress in an original way every day of the week without going bankrupt. We like women who are spontaneous and free-thinking, and we want to dress them according to their spirit, the Smash spirit.

WHERE THE SMASH WE COME FROM?

The concept of original and affordable fashion was born in the streets of Amsterdam between music, friends and a hippie spirit. An idea that moved to Barcelona in 2004 absorbing the air of cosmopolitan, Mediterranean, innovative and cheerful city and we joined the Happy Barcelona Style! Smash continue to grow as a multicultural family, now consisting of nearly 200 Smashers, where work goes together with the desire to enjoy life. Our clothes speak for themselves.

WHAT THE SMASH WE DO?

Smash is happiness, creativity, freedom and joy, a way of seeing and confronting life with optimism. This is the philosophy that we apply to our collections of clothes and accessories, season after season. Happiness and life… the Spanish fiesta and good mood transformed into clothes: dresses, jackets, skirts, tunics, trousers, accessories, and also a girls line. Urban chic, hi-standard, colourful wear and cool fashion, anytime casual clothes… All this is blended together in our two annual collections of 600 articles.

WHERE THE SMASH ARE WE NOW?

Last year we grew by 10% and we are now present in 66 countries with over 4,500 international points of sale and 10 franchises in different countries and selling 1.5 million garments per year. Smash women can be found all over the world and the Smashing Girls Collection (our kids line) have had a great success. We keep on moving; in 2012 we successfully presented our second brand Mismash, with a romantic and vintage touch, at Who’s Next (Paris). It has received a great response and can now be found in many showrooms across Europe. And on July 2013 we present Paramita, the new acquisition from the Smash Group. apr2014 | FASHION AFFAIR  75

& beauty

with Alicia R. Camlibel, Ph.D., LPC, Psychotherapist Spring always brings a sense of rejuvenation and change. It is a time to reflect on all that has passed and to consider what may come. It is the season of assessment, reflection, and cleaning. I am not just referring to the clothes in your closet, the disorderly garage, or your children’s play area. I am referring to an assessment, reflection, and cleaning of the things that no longer work for you. For example, relationships that you hold on to that are unfulfilling or no longer serve a positive purpose in your life or negative thoughts and behaviors that are not allowing you to grow and reach your goals. When I refer to a relationship or thought/behavior that doesn’t work anymore, I mean that it just doesn’t work like it once did or perhaps it never really fulfilled the purpose or intention in the first place. Sometimes relationships are for a season or many years, it all depends on where you are in your life and vice versa with the other person. When a relationship becomes a lot of work on your part with no reciprocation from the other person involved or is no longer genuine or sincere, it is time to take a second look. An important part of growth and change may involve freeing ourselves of certain behaviors and people to move 82

forward. It is a cleaning out of what doesn’t work to make room and free ourselves to welcome what does work. So I encourage all of you to take some time to sit, reflect, and assess. What works well in your life and what does not? What have you been holding on to that you may need to say goodbye to in order to grow and move ahead? This doesn’t just apply to relationships with people. It can apply to a dysfunctional relationship with food, self sabotaging patterns at work that are not allowing us to move ahead, lack of structure or routine which is effecting productivity, ability to get things accomplished, or negatively impacting family members.

re

If you are doing more than spring cleaning around the home and have some spring changing to do, here are areas to think about and focus upon.

1.

Change those behaviors that have not helped you to achieve your goals. Changing behaviors are not easy. Behaviors tend to be habitual and many are so a part of our lives that we don’t think twice when doing them. It is usually only when we are not receiving a desired result or it is brought to our attention in a negative way, usually with negative consequences, that we tend to realize we need to change. One way to begin to identify behaviors that we need to change is by looking at what our life is like currently and how we would ideally like our life to be. Then look at

g a look at our , feelings, and rs, which may tively impactlives, gives us rtunity to not change, but it gives us the opportunity to ew and refresh our goals and rpose and look towards a better future.

what within your control is causing the discrepancy. After identifying the behaviors that are not working for you in achieving how you would like things to be, begin to be conscious about them and change them. Change takes time and a lot of conscious effort. It takes 90 days for a new behavior to begin to become a habit. If you find you are stuck in making a change, seek professional help. Self help groups, self help books, and other professionals can often times set you upon the right path. Also look to people who you admire. What are the habits and behaviors that have helped them reach their goals. Role models, mentors, and other successful people often have great tips and advice. We just need to be open to them. Replace old ways of thinking that hold you back with new thoughts that will inspire you. The ABC’s of thoughts are thoughts produce feelings which produce behaviors. If you want to change how you feel you must change your thoughts. If you want to change your behavior you must change your thoughts or your feelings. One effects the others and vice versa. However, like changing behaviors, changing thoughts also requires a bit of work. Begin by taking a good hard look at your thought patterns, look at your reaction to things, and look at your overall view of things. Sometimes a good friend or partner can shed light and give us honest perspective about how we view things and react to them. Sometimes keeping a thought log or journal can help us identify thoughts and feelings which may be driving behaviors that are holding us

inner fashion and beauty back from achieving our goals. Once aware of them, again the issue is consciously working at changing them. Using positive affirmations, inspirational quotes, guided imagery, and gratitude exercises are ways to bring more positive thoughts into our lives. Remember positive attracts positive. Taking a look at our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, which may be negatively impacting our lives, gives us the opportunity to not only change, but it gives us the opportunity to renew and refresh our goals and purpose and look towards a better future. The road to mental wellness whether it be in the home, for your children, or at work, begins with taking a look at ourselves, which at times can be one of the most difficult yet most rewarding things we can do. I wish you a happy and healthy spring full of cleaning and changing. Until Next Time! Alicia

ALTERNATIVE

Everything we wear has to come from somewhere. Whether it is plant fiber based or manmade chemical processed, fabric must be produced by some method. It usually begins by some kind of lumpy, yucky thing that most of us would have a hard time imagining would become anything useful, much less beautiful. But, then the magic happens.

Take a look at the tag on the back of your shirt. Go ahead. I’ll wait. Odds are it says something like “Cotton”, or “Cotton/ Polyester”, or “Rayon”, or “Silk”. There is probably some “Spandex” thrown in there for shape and stretchiness. Maybe if you’re at work or wearing something particularly nice you’ll have some “Linen”. The fact is, we use a lot of different things to make our clothes including things like hemp, wool, and ramie. Ramie is actually the oldest known plant based fiber known to be used as fabric. It has been found on Egyptian mummies dating from 6000 BCE! However, there are costs incurred when producing anything. Cotton is considered the dirtiest crop in the world, using 16% more pesticides and 50% more water than any other fiber crop. And then there is polyester, which is actually a petroleum based product. Spandex is 85% polyurethane. It’s easy to see that you could quickly become discouraged, and likely a little grossed out, by the kinds of things that you are putting on your body. However, it is still generally better than walking around naked and, let’s face it, I love clothes. I like the way they look and feel. I like the way they make me look and feel. But I’m willing to take a look at some alternative ways of creating the fabrics that do more than cover nakedness

PINEAPPLE FIBER

While pina cloth has been in use since the late 1800s, it’s only been in the last 20 years that it has truly gained popularity because of its sustainable properties. The Spanish Red Pineapple plant is quickly renewable, reaching maturity in about 18 months, but due to the vast quantities of leaves needed to make a small amount of cloth it is still not a fiber that could compete with other natural fibers like cotton or silk. Most of the crop is grown in the Philippines, with pina being a great fair trade job opportunity where the Filipino weaver might earn between $73 and $220 a month. While this may seem nominal by Western standards, when compared to the average wage of $2 a day, pina weaver’s income is in the upper echelons of earning potential. With the growing demand, also comes the potential for more Filipinos to take advantage of an excellent career opportunity.

What makes pina so attractive to designers now? First, its natural color and luster make chemical baths unneeded before it is woven into cloth the way bamboo must be treated. Additionally, it’s sheer, easy to structure, and its natural ivory color is easy to dye, making it ideal for evening and formal wear. Interior designers also like it for drapes, upholstery, and table cloths for these reasons, as well. Blending pina with polyester and silk help achieve the desired drape and stiffness.

The weaving process, however, is very labor intensive and done primarily by hand. The leaves have to be soaked and scraped of the fibers, with the fibers then being dried, waxed, and spun into yarn. The yarn is very delicate so it takes great skill to weave it into cloth. The cloth itself is very light and soft and, unlike most other high-end fabrics, easy to care for. Just wash and air dry. No dry cleaning needed!

apr2014 | FASHION AFFAIR  87

SOY FIBER

ABOVE: Some call it vegetable cashmere because it is so soft, easy to care for, and absorbs dyes quickly. Soy textile is considered one of the most eco-friendly fabrics because the fibers are spun completely from the ‘leftovers’ from the soy food industry. The fabric is so biodegradable that you can compost it for your garden when you’re through with it. Soy fiber is moisture absorbent, antibacterial, and UV resistant. This makes it ideal for use in sports and casual wear. Blending it with other fibers like cotton gives it the stretch that it needs to have to be comfortable and strong. There are some studies that have shown that by just touching the skin soy protein fiber activates collagen; that it can promote the micro circulation of blood capillaries and contains amino acids beneficial to the human body. 88

TENCEL or LYOCELL

LEFT, ABOVE, RIGHT: Tencel, or lyocell, is a rather ingenious manmade fiber where wood pulp from sustainable tree farms are run through a ‘closed-loop’ process that recovers or decomposes all the solvents and emissions used. What that means, is that more than 99% of what is used to produce the fabric is either consumed or reused, leaving very little byproduct or pollutants. Tencel, or lyocell, is certified by the international Forest Stewardship Council and is 100% biodegradable.

The fibers are able to absorb dye to high quality standards, making it ideal for rich color trends. The fabric is moisture absorbent, with 50% greater moisture absorption than cotton, and anti-bacterial. It feels very much like rayon, with the same flattering drape and smooth surface while being, mostly, naturally wrinkle resistant. While it will shrink (about 3%) after its first washing, it will retain its shape and size thereafter and should be cared for as you would other delicate fabrics with hand or gentle-cycle washing and line dried. While the cloth generally has the appearance of rayon, the fibers can be manipulated to simulate a variety of textures such as suede, leather, and silk.

nke Domaske began with her kitchen and the goal to create a fabric that would not irritate the skin of her step-father who was undergoing cancer treatments. As a former microbiology student and biochemist, she had the education and knowledge to start cooking up yarn that is quickly becoming the talk of the fashion world. While fabric made from milk proteins have been in existence in the 1930s, they all were processed heavily with chemicals whereas QMIlk does not. It might first be asked if this is going to drive up the cost of milk in Europe. The answer is a resounding no! In fact, millions of tons of non-food grade milk that is deemed unsafe for human consumption is thrown away every year. Casein, the protein needed to create the fabric, is found in the non-food grade milk that grocery stores and food producers do not purchase.

Then the milk must ferment before it is turned into a powder. From there it is heated and mixed with other natural ingredients and turned into yarn. To give an example of the eco-friendliness of the process compare the number of liters of water it takes to process one kilo of cotton to one kilo of QMilk.

Cotton – 20,000 liters of water QMilk – 2 liters of water

It is still significantly more expensive to produce Qmilk, but given that it is marketed as a luxury fiber similar in feel to silk, the cost becomes more comparable and stable since the commodities market for milk does not fluctuate the way it does for luxury items. In addition to feeling good, it may also be good for you as the protein contains amino acids that antibacterial and anti-aging. The fabric has been shown to help blood circulation and regulate body temperature. It is sustainable, compostable, and manufactured from a side stream for minimal environmental impact. And, the best part, is that it can be washed like most any fabrics!

YELLOW

Choosing a Yellow to Wear

Yellow is such a fun color to wear through the spring and summer. Sunny and bright, it’s important to choose the right hue, placement, and amount.

HUE

Which to wear, which to wear? Pale, pale pastel to mustard, select that right hue for your skin tone and hair color. The general rule of thumb is – the darker you are, the more choices you have when it comes to yellow, but avoid the ones that lean too orange. These will often make you look sallow. The lighter tones of lemon look amazing on brunettes with olive skin. But if you’re alabaster toned, pastels will wash you out, so choose warmer tones like sunflower or school bus yellow. Blondes, however, can have lots of fun with orangey-yellows. And redheads look amazing in mustard tones!

PLACEMENT

However, yellow can be a bit intimidating to put on, especially by the face. A bright yellow pencil skirt or school bus toned slim slacks coupled with any other color on top (personal favorites include black, brown, gray, blue, and red!) makes a bold statement without you having to worry about whether or not it washes you out. Or try out a yellow t-shirt with dark blue jeans and put a fun, summery multicolored scarf on top to help minimize the amount of yellow near your face.

AMOUNT

If you’re not too sure how you feel about wearing such a bold color, accessorize, accessorize, accessorize! Belts, purses, shoes, crochet vests, are fabulous ways to incorporate a little sunshine into your wardrobe. And don’t forget necklaces, earrings, or scarves!

Depending on the amount of red or blue it contains, yellow can have different personalities. Yellows with a red undertone are warm and welcoming, so they’re great on large pieces of furniture and walls―“especially in north-facing rooms that might otherwise feel stark,” says New York City decorator Thomas Jayne. Yellows with a hint of blue can come off as cold, so they’re best used sparingly, on accessories or small furnishings. Jayne suggests keeping bright yellows out of bedrooms and offices, because they can disrupt sleep and concentration. But pale, buttery yellows “function as neutrals,” he explains, and can work just about anywhere.

ince London Fashion Week, September 2013, Yen wowed America by showcasing at the Metropolitan Fashion Week October 2013 and will be the grand finale this year at LA Fashion Week. Since then the likes of Paris Hilton and other A List Hollywood celebrities are requesting Yen Couture. Yen started designing from 2009, inspired by anime, dc and marvel illustrations plus the colour and texture of nature. Conclusively, leaving his medical profession and focusing on couture that same year. The collection “Ode to Melancholy” February 2014, was exhibited only to high profiled dignitaries throughout the UAE and will be releasing this collection to the general public later this year. This beautiful dark collection was inspired by his “sadness and dark side”. The detail on the couture was of recyclable materials, rubber and plastic. The delicate intricacy of the artwork is refined and detailed, that one would think this was printed upon the fabric itself.

Model: Paula Souza Photographed by: Marcin Andrzejeweski

“The world will be waiting with baited breath for this amazing designer who has caused a fashion storm with his unique version of couture genius.”

Going “Green” has become a big thing worldwide and in UAE, hence the recyclable material used for this collection. Yen stated: “Since last year it has been a whirlwind, from UAE, London then to USA in less than five months.” When asked about Paris Hilton, Yen said that her stylist who also looks after other major A List Hollywood celebrities fell in love with his pieces displayed in Melrose Avenue, Hollywood California and then he received the news that Paris is wearing one of his collections in her new music video. Yen is still in awe of the global success in such a short span of time. In London Fashion Week September 2014, Yen will be unveiling his collection for the “House of iKons” a Lady K Production as the Grand Finale. Yen indicated that to be invited second year in row is fantastic news, showing the full confidence of the whole production company on his brand. Yen’s collection will be something very different from the previous ones as he trying to tap the purest form of his aesthetics and calls it “The Aria to Yvonne” a song for his mother, where he drew all his artistic influence.

Ever since I was a child, I always had the desire to see myself in a magazine or on TV. I liked playing dress up, but being raised in Tagongon, a small town in the Philippines, where there was rarely an opportunity to eat three times a day much less own many material things like pretty clothes, TVs, and magazines. Growing up on the mountain with my farming family, we didn’t even have electricity. My grade school years were difficult. I still remember walking 12 miles to go to school every day while only owning one pair of shoes. I sold empty liquor bottles, ice candy, and boiled peanuts at school and to my neighbors just to have some extra cash in order to help my parents. Those were tough years of making many sacrifices, so needless to say many of my friends thought I was delusional when I told them I wanted more for my life.

We know you’re more than just a pretty face. Problem skin may challenge your attitude, and that’s why your intuition is going off right now. This is your redemption. A big stand-out to our team here at Fashion Affair was the Environ B-active Sebuwash. In line to be your next favorite face wash, the Sebuwash is a gentle foaming gel cleanser with ideal benefits. Founder Dr. Des became interested in the physiology of skin cancer and the skin following the untimely death of two young patients due to melanoma. This is more than a business, it’s clearly now a passion project. The core ingredient is Vitamin A and the scientifically proven results is making this a cult favorite for those in the know.

You heard the saying, “When you know better, you do better”. Yep--that’s Environ.

Safety means aid to the uninjured. Before imitators rob you of your spending confidence and good looks..... consider First Aid Beauty.

Trust is at the cornerstone of what Lili Gordon (founder) does here at First Aid Beauty and board-certified dermatologist Dr. Robert Buka is the supportive ringleader. Every drop that goes into these products is rigorously researched. If we could suggest one product to win you over, it would be the Deep Cleanser w/ Red Clay. This Clay Cleanser controls breakouts and will make your pores appear smaller. Extremely moisturizing to the skin, also opt for any of the facial moisturizers. The line works in synergy with itself. Botanical top notch ingredients remove makeup, dirt, and will be the first dominating product in your travel bag.

Deep Cleanser w/Red Clay

Let’s start a rumor. Not the kind that hurts, but the kind that helps. As CVS moves to rid tobacco products from its shelves later this year, this leaves more room for all that is good for you. No rumor yet. That is fact. Starting in late 2013/early 2014, 6,000 CVS stores will carry these two new hypoallergenic and dermatologist tested cleansing bars aimed at relieving eczema, psoriasis, and inflammation-prone skin. The soaps won’t be available in the beauty section of the stores, but in the first aid section. Again, fact.
