We believe that each and every one of us can make an enormous impact on the world. By making small changes in the items we use, the purchases we make and the way we approach each day, we all really can change the world! Each day you vote with your dollars, supporting the companies that share your values. We believe in creating a sustainable company culture, one where each decision is carefully weighed based upon the impact.

WHY ORGANIC? Environmental Benefits Organic food production is a much more natural and sustainable enterprise than conventional farming. This is because organic agriculture does not use any synthetic pesticides or inputs that often remain present in soil and water long after the crops have been harvested, and may potentially create additional damage to ecosystems (such as the current crisis with bee populations). Also, organic agricultural methods encourage recycling, for instance using manure as a natural fertilizer in fields.

Nutrition & Health Benefits

It has been scientifically validated that many organic foods offer higher quantities of important vitamins and nutrients than their conventional counterparts. Certainly, the consumption of organic foods reduces the amount of pesticide residues and other potential toxins ingested. This has proven to be a particularly important benefit for infants and small children.

Social Benefits

Most organic farmers operate smaller scale family farms where they have a strong, personal connection to the land they are farming. The purchase of organic food supports these farmers, their families, and their communities.

” ACUREORGANICS.com We believe in pursuing a triple bottom line. People and planet are just as important as profit.

ON THE COVER

LOVE IS IN THE HAIR LET’S GET DOWN TO THE ROOTS BY JENI TETAMORE

An infinite palette comes down to the proportions of only two pigments. The science behind why your hair is the color it is goes deep into the cellular level of your existence. Melanocytes are large star shaped cells whose branches are called dendrites found most usually at the bottom of the hair follicle. This is where melanin is created in the form of small grains of pigment which are injected into the keratinocytes of the hair shaft formed by the lengthening of dendrites. So, from the very beginning you were meant to be a blonde, brunette, or red head! Back to those two pigments. Eumelanin has a color variation

between a brownyred and black and is generated by the amino acid, tyrosine, and transformed by an enzyme, tryrosinase. It begins it journey as a rice-shaped granule. The second pigment has a less precise form, is diffused and spotty, and is called phaeomelanin with color variations ranging from yellow to red. However, in addition to the tyrosine, phaeomelanin also as another amino acid essential to its productions called cysteine, which is rich in sulphur. It is the proportion of eumelanin and phaeomelanin that then determine the exact tone of each individual hair on a person’s head because

each hair follicle could have a slightly different ratio. However, in addition to these pigments, genetics also comes into play, helping to determine which amino acids and melanin a person is most likely to have. But this is the reason why we don’t have one shade of brown, one shade of blonde, or one shade of red throughout the human race. It is because the palette possibilities are endless. So it’s Not My Kid’s Turning my Hair Gray? Nope. It’s mostly because your chance of turning gray increases by 10-20% every decade after you turn 30.

2015FEB | FASHIONAFFAIRMAGAZINE.COM

29

The Library of Congress Science Reference webpage helps explain the overall process a little better. Our hair grows in three phases: • Anagen: This is the active growth stage of the hair fiber and can last from 2-7 years. At any given moment 80-85% of our hair is in the anagen phase. • Catagen: Sometimes referred to as the transitional phase, which is when hair growth begins to “shut down” and stop activity. It generally lasts 10-20 days. • Telogen: this occurs when hair growth is completely at rest and the hair fiber falls out. At any given time, 10-15% of our hair is in the telogen phase, which generally lasts 100 days of scalp hair. After the telogen phase, the hair growth process starts over again to the anagen phase. Every person continues to go through this cycle until other changes in the body begin to take place. For those who are predisposed to balding, hormonal changes beginning blocking hair follicle production. And, while not everyone will go bald, everyone will eventually go gray because of what Dr. Desmond Tobin describes as the slow-down 30  FASHIONAFFAIRMAGAZINE.COM

FEB2015

of the “melanogentic clock”. This “clock” slows down or stops melanocyte activity, decreasing the pigment hair receives at the follicle, and usually occurs just

before the individual hair is preparing to fall out or be shed, so the root will appear pale.ii There are internal and external

factors when considering how when hair might go gray. Internal, or intrinsic, factors include – genetic defects, hormones, body distribution, and age. External, or extrinsic, factors include – climate, pollutants, toxins, and chemical exposure. For instance, our bodies naturally produce small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. However, if it builds up on the hair shafts, it can lead to the gradual loss of hair color.ii This may give you cause to pause the next time you pick that box of hair color, when you think about it. Even darker tones and red tones have hydrogen peroxide in them. You may be inadvertently turning yourself gray faster by trying to cover the gray you currently have. A quandary to be sure. Do Blondes Have More Fun? This is not a new question. This isn’t even a relatively new question. In fact, Darwin (yes, that’s right, the Charles Darwin of On the Origin of Species fame) researched the sexual selection of blonde hair in women for his book The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex published in 1871....

31

And what did he find? “NOT ENOUGH DATA TO SUPPORT HIS THEORY THAT BLONDE HAIR IS SEXUALLY SELECTED AND HAD TO DROP THE SUBJECT!” Additionally, there have been two blonde mutations in our human history – the traditional Caucasian blonde where there are a higher number of women than men who retain their blonde hair naturally to adulthood. These women have been scientifically proven to have more estrogen than brunettes and often have other features that men find desirable due to their lower levels of testosterone such as finer facial features, smaller nose, smaller jaw, pointed chin, narrow shoulders, smooth skin, and less body hair coupled with higher energy levels and playfulness.iii In a further study, it was also shown that blondes will often earn more and marry richer, however, it’s not all fun and games. A woman dyed her hair in all three colors (at different times, obviously) and went out to a variety of bars to see how men reacted to her. The perception was that as a blonde she was actually less attractive and less intelligent (as compared to brunette) and needier (as compared to being a red head), so the researchers concluded that the men might believe blondes are simply “easier”. Whether this is true or not, it was a matter of perception.

32  FASHIONAFFAIRMAGAZINE.COM

|

FEB2015

The second mutation of the blonde gene can be found most dramatically on the Solomon Islands in Melanesia. Scientists for the longest time thought that the light skinned, blonde, blueeyed genetics was because they were mostly found in the frigid north where they couldn’t have absorbed as much Vitamin D from the sun if they had been darker. This would not explain the dark, dark skin found on the Solomon Islands coupled with their blonde, blonde hair and often light colored eyes. Researchers have determined that the mutation in their blonde gene happened sometime between 5,000 and 30,000 years ago, long before there could have been any European influence.

Are Brunettes Boring?

Common stereotypes include trustworthy, faithful, eventempered, clever, gifted, confident, stable, and imagination-less. Put another way – boring. I love breaking down stereotypes! 90% of the world’s population is some tone of brunette ranging from chestnut to deepest blueblack. It’s not that they are more responsible, or stick-in-the-muds, or smarter than blondes or red heads, it’s just that there are so many more of them that it makes it difficult for those who want to pigeon-hole them the way blondes get a bum-wrap for being ditzy and red-heads for being fiery that single stereotype just won’t do. Brunettes (or brunet if you are a man) are often seen as more approachable simply because it is not unusual to have brown hair (black hair, in this case,

will actually fall into its own category, because researchers found that those with black hair are often perceived as cool and superior. Go figure.) However, there is the catch-22 that there is little excitement in having dark hair because it is so prevalent. This is where that whole boring stereotype starts creeping in. However, the study where the woman dyed her hair the three different colors? Researchers asked men at the same night club to rate the photographs of the same woman as a blonde, brunette, and redhead. As a brunette, men rated her “more attractive, intelligent, approachable, competent, and arrogant (because of those superior brains, perhaps?)”.iv I do have to wonder how many of them also had dark hair…

Redheads are a Pain?

With their reputation of being fiery and stubborn, maybe some do feel like they are, but the more appropriate question to ask is “How do redheads experience pain?” Wait. What? That’s right. Those who have red hair have a very specific gene mutation called MC1R, which not only codes for melanocortin-1 receptor, but also affects other health conditions. Dentists and anesthesiologists alike have noticed the difference between treating those with red hair versus those who are blonde or brunette. First, redheads are resistant to anesthetics from the ‘-caine’ family. So traditional doses of Novocain, Lidocaine, etc., will

have little effect on redheads. Coupled with this, redheads appear to be far more sensitive to pain and sensations of hot and cold. Other health risks include: • Increased risk of Parkinson’s. Redheads are almost twice as likely to develop this disease as compared to those who have black hair. • More likely to develop skin cancer due to the mutation preventing MC1R from properly binding to a gene called PTEN, which helps protect against cellular changes that promote cancer. • Women between 25 and 42, who are fertile, are 30% more likely to develop endometriosis, where tissue from the uterus grows outside the uterus, usually resulting in extreme pain. However, those who were infertile, had a reduced risk compared to those of other hair colors. • An increased chance of having Congenital Melanocytic Naevi, which are brown or black birthmarks that can cover up to 80% of the body. However, only about 1 in 20,000 children have large or multiple CMN, it’s just that being a redhead puts you at a greater risk.

However, lest you think that redheads are whiners or wimps, I assure you that is not the case at all. While these may be ways that they may suffer more, they are also tougher due to their genetics in other areas. Redheads may not like the cold, but most will suck down curry sauce and hot food that would make the rest of us cry like babies. They are also less sensitive to other types of pain, most specifically stinging or pricking (this also helps explain why they are so resistant to drugs that must be injected into their subcutaneous areas). In years past, their red hair and fair skin may have also helped them absorb more Vitamin D from the sun to help them fight off rickets, a debilitating disease effecting the joints.

2015FEB | FASHIONAFFAIRMAGAZINE.COM

33

So, it may be true that redheads are feistier, but maybe they need to be in order to compensate for the fact that they require 20% more anesthetic than people of other hair color to achieve the same effects and a lower threshold for pain due injury or surgery. If that’s what helps them, then I say that’s fair.

n the last ten years or so there has been a growing trend among those who don’t have to go consignment and thrift store shopping for the savings who are still frequenting these and other second-hand shops.

Upon further research, it’s become apparent that it is because they are finding name-brand designer such as Chanel, St. Laurent, Vuitton, Hermes, and more at discount prices due to the fact that the previous owner didn’t realize what a prize they had and simply gave it away. With websites now catering to what we now call “vintage couture”, people are wondering if it is worth the investment. Well, think of it in the same way as you would in buying a piece of fine art by a noted master. There is the Chanel women’s suit from the 1960’s that was originally purchased for $805 at auction and in less than six years resold for $3,220 (quoted prices are actual realized prices at major auction houses). This comes out to more than a 300% appreciation (Pradhan). Additionally, there is just something about the way wearing something classic and timeless will

make you feel. Hollywood actresses have been doing this for years – buying vintage couture dresses from designers who their own icons wore. The silhouettes tend to be utterly feminine without being “girly”, bold without being gaudy, and if they are gaudy they weren’t that way when they were created! They are often highly structured, which also tends to be very flattering to all female body types. And the construction is incomparable to anything you can buy off the rack. However, be prepared to take care of your vintage clothes. Pack it in acid-free tissue, use padded hangers, and not everything can be dry-cleaned (many items are all cotton or all silk, linen, etc.). Take it to someone you really trust to not just blast away with chemicals. It some cases you will simply wash on delicate and allow to dry flat. Now, if you are hoping to also own a piece of history and maybe look upon it as an investment, you can start by going to your local consignment boutique and/or thrift store. Or, if you want to save time and effort, there are several websites that cater to this type of shopping. A few examples are in this very issue but you can never have too many resources for fabulous fashion.

Moo Roo handbags were originally made by hand on designer, Mary Norton’s dining room table after having had a dream one night and naming the brand after her two daughters (Micah-Moo & Reilly-Roo). The brand had meteoric success becoming the red carpet staple for celebrities, fashionistas and the darling of the fashion press from 1998-2009. Sadly designer Mary Norton, lost her business in 2009 due to the recession and the wrong investment partners. Over the next three years Mary also faced many other personal struggles and losses that sunk her into depression.

MOOROORENEW.COM Her deep faith and her wonderful daughters, pulled Mary up and through the darkness. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Mary chose to take all of the lessons she had learned in business and in life with the creation of her brand Moo Roo Renew. The brand and products are a reflection of Mary’s personal and professional journey and is by far her best work to date. The Moo Roo Renew brand is made from broken, overlooked or forgotten vintage items that are then reimagined with the signature Moo Roo whimsical twist and created into one of a kind treasures. In her new shop, located on historic King Street in Charleston, South Carolina, customers can find upcycled vintage furniture, home décor, accessories and of course handbags. While there, they can watch Mary or one of her artisans, working on creations in the back studio or possibly book a seat at Mary’s Artisan dinners held weekly in the store. Having come full circle, back to creating one of a kind items by hand, on a “dining room table” designer Mary Norton knows now “There’s no place like home.” Moo Roo Renew

The forest green suede tends more into the blue tones. It is embroidered with a delicate clear beaded hummingbird and then has three dimensional silk flowers and a butterfly to make it come off the bag in the unique Moo Roo Renew manner. Sweet Cheeks has everything from lotion bars, essential oil perfumes to lip scrubs. We only use essential oils and the best raw material for you and your skin. Sweet Cheeks All Natural was started after I had children. My son had eczema…bad. It started as a mission to find a product that would provide relief but did not come with a scary list of side effects. Totally frustrated with what I found, I set out on a mission to create what was needed. Our original product, “Baby Butter” was born. I realized when requests for “this” and “that” started pouring in that I had tapped into something. I wanted all natural bath and body products that would be good for their skin and good for their earth. To that end,all of our oils are plant based, which means that they are absorbed into the skin and don’t just sit on top of the skin. We believe that stellar ingredients will make a stellar product so from start to finish we are putting our best in so you have the best. We also believe you should have a bath and body and skin care products that works best for you, so please contact us if you would

like to customize any of our products. Since we don’t use any synthetic or petroleum based products in our product, not only is Sweet Cheeks better for you and better for your baby, it is better for the earth. When deciding to make a company, the hard part wasn’t what ingredients to use to make our bath and body line, but how to package them in a way that was gentle to the earth. To that end, most of Sweet Cheeks products are in glass containers. We are working hard to get all of them in glass and/or with as minimal packaging as possible. We invite you to come back to nature and feel beautiful!

CITYCENTRE is Houston’s trendy destination for fashionable shopping and dining. If the power of businessmen who rule these parts and the fine restaurants who court them peaks your interest, then a stay at the Hotel Sorella at CITYCENTRE is a must-visit. Nestled discreetly inside this sprawling 37-acre outdoor shopping arena is Hotel Sorella. Conde Nast Traveler recently praised this creative extension of The Valencia Group, and it’s apparent from the moment you step through the lobby doors that you’ll regret checking out.

Imported marble and hardwood floors, walk in showers-even private spacious open-air balconies on certain floors! The floor-to-ceiling windows made me feel one with the hypnotic and expansive skyline. The Viking fridge was stocked with the Texas staple, Shiner Bock beer, which was a welcome friend to this weary traveler settling in after a long flight. florals Article by Jeni Tetamore

Vegetation motifs have been discovered in pottery and jewelry since ancient times. However, applying those same principles to fabric proved to be quite challenging. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Persians would decorate

their robes with clasps and pins that would give the impressions of flowers and leaves. It wasn’t until the Sassanian Empire in Middle Persia, the last Iranian empire before the rise of Islam, which ruled from 224 to 651 CE that some major innovations occurred in the decoration of wearable fabric in the form of floral and vegetation patterns. While the tribal designs were most often in geometric patterns, the textile masters of the time developed the beginnings of what would eventually become our modern day brocading techniques. Brocades are most often signified in flowers and vegetation patterns, but brocaded silk weaving dates back to before the Sassanid dynasty. With the rise of Islam and the outlawing of men being allowed to wear gold, much of the art was lost for many years when the masters escaped Persia. However, while men could not wear the beautiful fabrics any longer, during the Qajar era brocaded silk and velvet

were heavily used to upholster the furniture and the curtains of the royal courts, so the art forms began to gain popularity again. As the regality and sumptuousness of these fabrics gained fame and the world became a smaller place with those from all over the world beginning to make pilgrimages and bringing back such items as the spoils of wars, those in Europe and Asia began experimenting with the floral motifs in their own fashions. Meanwhile, in China, the Tang Dynasty was making its own inroads in floral weaving, coming into power about the time Sassanian Empire was coming to a close. This particular specimen is silk with the floral patterns being constructed of a weft-faced compound twill. The vibrant colors is a hallmark of Asian art and fabric, especially considering that this particular piece was made sometime in the late 8th or early 9th century. However, the floral pattern had taken root in the world of fashion now and it was considered a product in high demand, whether it was flowers painted onto the cloth at the hems of the dresses

or embroidered painstakingly all over the cloth or roller printed as it was in the 17th and 18th centuries to create gingham, women and men believed that floral and vegetation patterns were a sign of wealth and health and vibrancy.

Designers who are taking floral prints to all new levels this year include: Hentsch Man’s “La Cantina” Collection • Jeremy Scott • Topman Design’s Gordon Richardson Vintage Florals • Joseph Altruzarra • Diane von Furstenberg • Sharif Hamza • Temperley London • Carolina Herrera • Victoria Beckham •

Naja, a digitally driven, forward-thinking innovator in the lingerie industry, has officially launched to rave reviews. Billed as the, “radically different, thoughtful lingerie brand for smart, courageous and sexy women,” the brand was pioneered by Colombianborn CEO, Catalina Girald. No stranger to the fashion and technology industries, Girald founded MOXSIE, one of the first venturefunded fashion sites for independent designers, which was later sold to Fab. com. Naja is a breath of fresh air in an industry that hasn’t changed appreciably in decades. When asked about the direction of the young company, Girald answered, “We celebrate strong women. We’ve done away with fans blowing fake wind into our models’ hair, and dated lingerie designs. Our fresh designs, pricing and mission to empower women are challenging the industry, and we’re building the first billion-dollar online lingerie brand for the next generation woman.”

The company offers exclusive designs paired with the highest quality of fabrics, placing significant focus on structural changes and better product design. Features reserved almost exclusively for luxury lingerie, such as breathable memory foam cups and ultrasonic sealed straps, are now being brought to consumers at fair prices. Naja uses Peruvian sourced Pima cotton for the softest feel, and intelligent fabrics with odor and sweat wicking properties for real women with performance needs, all while remaining health and eco-conscious by using no phthalate materials and water based dyes. Perhaps the most intriguing thing about Naja is the company’s dedication to changing women’s lives. Through Naja’s Underwear for Hope program, the company donates a percentage of profits to training women in the poorest and most violent areas of the world to sew. Naja then employs them so that they can help themselves and their children. With each purchase of Naja, consumers can feel good knowing that they are contributing to changing a woman’s life.

Naja is committed to the empowerment of women. Through our Underwear for Hope program and our partnership with the Golondrinas Foundation in Colombia, Naja trains single or head of household mothers to sew. Naja then employs them so that they can help themselves and their children. When you educate a woman, everything changes.

How it works. A percentage of every purchase you make goes toward supporting our entrepreneurial sewing program for women through the Golondrinas Foundation. And for every bra purchase you make, you contribute directly to the employment of a single mother. How it works: When you buy a bra, Naja gives you a lingerie wash bag so that you can wash your undergarments. Each lingerie bag is made at home by one of the women that we employ through Underwear for Hope. 2015FEB | FASHIONAFFAIRMAGAZINE.COM

Naja is a product of our passions and beliefs: a love for beautifully designed things, a bit of rebelliousness, and a deep desire to make the world a better place.

UNDERWEAR FOR HOPE STORIES Maria Jaramillo, 36 years old | Barrio Caicedo, Colombia

My name is Maria, I am one of the “displaced” in Colombia—after gangs killed my sister, I was forced to leave our village with my three girls and my sister’s two girls. The violence hit me very hard. I didn’t know what to do. I wanted to die, but I couldn’t because I had them to take care of. Now, I try to teach children about the violence and I have a group of about 50 kids. I cleaned up a little park around the corner and on weekends I turn it into an activity center—I teach the children to plant, we fry potato chips in kettles, and we draw. I really try to focus on the boys, because war is made by men. I make them draw flowers so that they understand that flowers are not just for girls. I tell them that just because their mothers mop it doesn’t mean that they can’t. I teach them that when they join gangs, they destroy entire families. And I teach them that one shouldn’t wait for things to be given to them, things should be earned. Sometimes I think I want to leave this neighborhood, it has become just as violent as where I used to be from. But, I can’t. The children, they need me. As of November 2013, Maria works full time through Underwear for Hope. She hopes to use what she earns to educate her daughters and her nieces and to build a play house in the park for her 50 children to play in.
