Splash unveils Spring/Summer’14 Collection Fashion is all about shifting ideas and changing moods and with each season the desire to add the most covetable trends or the must have pieces to our wardrobes is a necessity. This SS’14 Splash interprets the trends that were the fashion world’s talk and launches them with a high street perspective. From aqua inspired florals to bold geometric patterns, headto-toe white to bespoke sports the Splash collection is an interesting mix of dramatic atmosphere and varied styles.
Highlighting the very pulse of high-street fashion , the Splash SS’14 collection picks on key trends like ‘Eden’, ‘Nostalgia’ and ‘Rational’, ‘Creed’ for women and ‘Nautical Play’, ‘Earthy paradise’, ‘Sports Goth’ and ‘California Surf ’ are key for men.
70’s is here to stay and this season it takes its cues from the seventies-inspired safari and ditsy vintage. Termed as ‘Nostalgia’ the trend encapsulates bold geometric patterns of vintage upholstery and romantic fusion of paisley inspired floral arabesques which make a grand and stylish come-back. Soft tailoring is the highlight of this trend giving key pieces like
maxi skirts, blouson and off shoulder tops and dresses a fun flouncy feel adding to the carefree yet eclectic attitude of the era. A strong look that emerges as part of this trend is the Western shirt to give your look a cowgirl kick which can be teamed with shorts and minis in groovy patterns and scarf inspired prints.
The ‘Eden’ trend is best represented by Acapulco-inspired florals growing alongside Aztec stripes in alluring colours. Feminine dressing will be the flavor of the season best represented with fit and flare dresses, crop tops and long maxi dresses with a lot of usage of ruffles and frills. This trend will be spotted in a variety of mix and match print patterns like surreal Tropicana prints, Naïve florals, hand drawn prints and jungle camouflage.
It’s true when said that women trends are a revolution season after season while fashion for men is an evolution. This season’s first inspiration comes from the Tropical which goes on to take a new form. Termed ‘Earthy Paradise’, the collection uses washed tropical and botanical darks like the Amazon jungle, jaguar and exotic bird creatures.as a core print direction. Offered in various categories of clothing like jackets, pants, resort shirts and printed chino shorts subtle ditsy florals and placement motifs are used all over to add a casual appeal. Sweatshirts and tees in crewneck styles and shirts also borrow from the ever popular Aloha shirt tropical motif for wearable and updated interpretation.
SplashFashions.com
The perennial nautical trend is redesigned and engrained through various details and new pieces for a more dressed up ‘Resort’ trend. Traditional blue and white sailor stripes continue but are refreshed and mixed with other authentic graphics like globetrotting maps and prints. Indigo as a colour plays a very important role in this trend, while Hawaiian florals are mixed with authentic heritage and marine feel are fused with preppy details. Indigo jerseys, sweatshirts, sleeveless truckers and chambrays shirts are key pieces. Camo print is washed out and the leafy floral print is interpreted in blue tones for the nautical look. Varsity is next on trend and caters to the Youth primarily, drawing inspiration from ‘Goth and Sports’. With sports inspired clothing finding its own audience in the last two seasons, this SS’14 we have updated the trend using bold and linear patterns with college fonts and an overlay of renaissance prints and minimal type slogans in clean palettes of grey, black and white. Baseball jersey tops, arc leg joggers and deep armhole vests with a Luxe appeal are the key pieces for a very commercial casual sports look whereas monochrome, tie and dye, leather look alike PU and mesh appear in various treatments updating the contemporary sportswear.

Silhouettes have been getting more interesting for a while now and structured is the route to take this season if you want to add a new dimension to your wardrobe. Follow the ‘Rational’ trend which is a flurry of origami-like fabric folds and laser cut patterns with mathematical precision. With a touch of femininity and the influx of luxurious fabrics this trend brings together the bold and the gentle. Available in maxis and oversize tops and dresses the collection uses geometrical patterns and clean mesh like structures to create a mystifying illusion. With SS’14 comes the warmer weather and this calls for lighter textures and materials but not without a dose of iridescent coatings and embellishments. Labeled ‘Creed’, the last trend for women this season features long flowing gowns, dresses with metallic effect, embellishments and textures prompting you to channel your inner goddess. Classic combinations like moonlight white on white will impart an ethereal feel, while dazzling blues will lend a burst of royalty. Summing up the season at Splash and primarily a high summer trend that takes motivation from the West Coast surf sports and skate wear look, ‘California Surf ’ is all about retro motifs, hippy Hawaiian prints which are mixed with tribal geometry and sporty accessories. Japanese surf prints are also big influencers for this look that features horizontal striped shorts, ombre look pastel t-shirts with small conversation motif shirts, resort shirts, tie& tees and vest with overlay varsity numbers. Spliced treatment in photo real images in sepia tones is an important graphic direction in a palette for faded pastels and washed out brights. With the fashion direction for the season now defined rush to your nearest Splash store to shop for an array of options along with some loved pieces from our SS’14 collection. Patrick Wasn’t Even Irish!
Born in 390 AD to an aristocratic Christian family, Patrick was like many children who are completely uninterested in the faith of his or her parents. However, after he was kidnapped and sent overseas to tend sheep as a slave at the tender age of 16, Patrick began to reexamine his opinion about God as he shivered away on the cold, mountainous countryside of Ireland for 7 years. He finally escaped and made his way back home only to become an ordained priest so that he could return to Ireland to share Christianity. He remained in Ireland until his death on March 17, 461 AD.
What’s the Big Deal About the Shamrock?
The shamrock is very important to Irish culture. First, St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Christian Holy Trinity of how the Father, Son and Holy Spirit were three yet one. However, it was also a sacred plant for the Celts in ancient times as it symbolized the rebirth of spring. But, it is also a symbol of Irish Nationalism. Irish patriots began to wear the shamrock in the 17th century when the English began to seize land and make laws against the use of the Irish language and the practice of Catholicism. It was a way to show their displeasure with English rule.
Made in America
St. Patrick’s day is largely the invention of Irish immigrants to the United States. While it was always considered a ‘feast day’ in Catholic tradition where the priests would acknowledge the celebration and families would enjoy a special meal, it was not considered to be a popular holiday until the 1970’s. The first St. Patrick’s Day Parade, however, occurred when Irish soldiers, who were fighing against the British in the American Revolutionary War, marched through the streets of New York City to demonstrate their ethnic pride. Over the years more and more parades flourished as a way to celebrate Irish heritage in America unitl it became a worldwide phenomenon. mar2014 | FASHION AFFAIR 71

Stuff, Stuff and More Stuff!
It happens quite often in my work with patients and I believe it happens quite often in life. Maybe it is just a part of human nature, in the world of psychology it is called projection or an error in thinking, in the non psychology world it is called comparison. Human beings tend to compare themselves to other human beings. The purpose of it is usually to unconsciously reinforce bad feelings they have for themselves. I want to emphasize unconscious. It is not something people do deliberately or purposefully. It would not make sense if they deliberately wanted to put themselves down or make themselves feel badly. The way it happens goes something like this, “my neighbor Anna just bought a new Mercedes, boy her life is so wonderful.” or “Clara’s husband just bought her a beautiful Rolex watch for valentine’s day, wow, he must really love her.” In these examples the acquisition of items society has deemed luxurious or pricy equates with love or a wonderful life.” and thus the person making the comparison is stating, because I don’t have those things, my life is not wonderful. They are reinforcing their own low self esteem or self worth. I am witness to this in my work with patients and I am a witness to this with others in my life. My answer to both is usually the same, it goes 78

something like this.....looks can be deceiving, the grass is not always greener on the other side, they may have gone into tremendous debt to buy that car, that house, that watch, etc. I try to point out to them by comparing themselves to others they are making themselves feel bad for no good reason. However, recently I have become very interested in the other side of this equation. Why do people buy fancy things, whether they can afford them or not, to make themselves feel better. Why is there this need to keep up with the Joneses? I even see this starting with school aged children in my office and my own life. It is not only a certain brand of jeans, or popular fur lines boots but with the little ones it is certain types of hand held devices, phones, and laptop computers. If you don’t wear these certain brands or own these certain devices the ones who do look down upon you, hence it reinforces the feeling at a very young age that you don’t fit in and often you are looked down upon by the others. Fast forward to the adult years...for many people this belief and mindset are still in play. Big houses, fancy cars, designer clothes, certain places to vacation, etc. the list goes on and on. They feel they have to look a certain way, act a certain way, dress a certain way, to fit in? To stand out? Why do they need all this stuff? I ask this question
inner fashion & beauty regardless of whether they can afford it or not? How many times do we hear about millionaires who lose all their money after reckless spending and buying of things? How come we equate having “stuff” with having self worth, self esteem, self confidence? Was it during our childhood when we so desperately wanted to fit in?
desperately desired were my way of keeping my deceased parents close. The truth is they are always close to me because it is the memories we had created, the lessons they taught, the love they gave, the recipes and stories they passed down are what really matter. No piece of art or china place setting can take that away.
I do not begrudge people of owning nice things. I believe it is healthy for people to want to look nice and take good care of themselves. I believe it is wonderful for people to put their best foot forward. However, I believe it is time as a society we take a look at what we own. What value we assign to it, and what purpose is it serving us? It is time as individuals we examine why we buy the things we buy, whether it is beyond our means or not beyond our means, if we are really honest with ourselves we may find that we buy for a plethora of reasons including wanting to fit in, wanting to feel better about ourselves or wanting to increase out self esteem. We then have to be honest with ourselves and realize it is not through the acquisition of things that we are really achieving good self esteem and good psychological health. These are external, superficial, albeit expensive, ways to make ourselves feel better. There is another big problem with these things, they can be taken away in an instant, and when they are gone, how then do you define yourself or feel about yourself?
As Spring approaches us in March, I urge you all to take a look at the things in your life. The stuff, whether big or small, or even as this article began the desire for stuff that others have and the meanings associated with it. Take a good hard, honest look at all of it. If you find it is a substitute for something you want to achieve within yourself or something you feel is missing. Take the time to do the work to feel this way without having to buy it. Also remember, at the end of the day, stuff doesn’t matter a bit. It is how we feel about ourselves, how we act towards others, and our character that matter. Also remember, stuff does not bring people back or keep people close. It is the memories related to the stuff, that keep it all alive inside our heart.
“
For self esteem, self worth, self value, friendships, should not be the result of owning “stuff.” They should be the result of genuine value of ourselves and others with whom we associate.
After all, to quote Mr. Carson, one of my favorite television characters from Downtown Abby,
The business of life is the acquisition of memories. In the end, that’s all there is.
”
A few years ago, my father passed away. My mother predeceased him by 7 years. He was remarried and had brought most of my parents —Mr. Carson joint possessions, to the second marriage. After he passed, I was not offered anything that belonged to my parents. I struggled with this for a year or so, I hoped things would change, I asked for specific items that just belonged to my mother or grandmother but none of these possessions or “stuff” were given to me. As I tried desperately to get something from the estate, a lawyer told me in time the things I so desperately wanted wouldn’t matter anymore. I was furious at him! How could my mother’s china or watercolor painting or linen from Ireland not mean anything? However, in time I came to realize the lawyer was right. In my case, the “things” I so

An artist is not someone who only works with paints and canvas, fabric and lace. An artist is someone who expresses their heart for all the world to see and lets it be judged on its own merits. Celine Antunes creates majestic, unique hairstyles for clients and festival models alike in extravagant fashion. Her thirst for setting the trends is only outweighed by her desire to continue on this path with her husband and son by her side.

q&a
Fashion Affair: What is Metamorphose? Celine Antunes: Festival Metamorphose
is a competition for hairdresser that is more than thirty-years old. It is comprised of more than thirty hairdressers, photographers, stylists, makeup artists, etc. held in France over the course of two days complete with stage shows and workshops. Passion of art is the key words of this seminar.
FA: What goes into planning a performance? CA: When I plan my performance, I prepare my show as a musical
comedy in which nothing is left of chance. I work on a story, a décor, interesting hairstyles, makeup, and clothes with a soundtrack and video that empower the catwalk. When my hair creations are done, I forward them to my stylist and my makeup artist so that they can work their magic on the models. I leave a great deal of creativity to each stylist, although we exchange ideas so that we can perform more efficiently.
FA: How do the models prepare for you to cut and style their hair before an audience? Do they have an idea of

Do your models have an idea of what you want to do before you go on stage? CA: We arrive a day before the show and I rent a room for a final
rehearsal. We rework all the details so that each model is comfortable in his or her character. We work in a very quiet atmosphere, a big difference from the show itself. The day of the show, everything is well organized with each model having a description of his or her hairstyle, clothes, and makeup. It is essential that the models are respected.
FA: How does it feel to be cutting, styling, and finishing hair before an audience? How does your technique and focus differ between being on stage and doing similar work in your salon? CA: The scene is an imaginary world where all the crazy stuff is
allowed. I let my heart, my creativity, speak. This is freedom of expression. This is a very different world than from what exists in my salon. There with my clients, I listen to their expectations and needs so that it is their heart that speaks. Each person who gives me his or her confidence, deserves my attention and investment. When I’m with my clients, I want to see them smile. These different universes, in which the pleasure is intense, is where sharing and dreaming are my driving forces. I need these two worlds to feel balanced.

FA: Is there a make-up artist, designer, famous personality with whom you would like to have the opportunity to work? CA: There are so many things about this passion that consume me. The people I admire like Jean Paul Gauthier for having the success he does even if he is different and Christophe Gaillet, a well-known hairdresser of the French style who I would like to work with someday.
“Hairdressing is my passion. I would die if I ever had to stop this job. It is the completion of my childhood dreams. Now that I’ve grown up, I still have the same dreams, like Peter Pan.”
FA: What sort of challenges or pitfalls have you had to overcome to get where you are today? CA: In France, it is difficult to make a name in the artistic world if you do not live in Paris. To prove that you are competent, you have to work more and harder than the others. You have to create your own professional network, reaching out to that you can become better known. When you’re original, extravagant, or different from others, it is easy to be pushed aside. 92

Why Indonesians Don’t Wear Green Nyai Loro Kidul (or Nyi Roro Kidul) is known as the Queen of the Southern Sea of Java. She is the mythical spiritual consort of the Sultans of Mataram and Yogyakarta, beginning with Senopait and continuing to the present day. She is often illustrated as a mermaid with a tail as well as the lower part of the body of a snake or fish. The 16th century Javanese legends, Prince Panembahan Senopait desired to establish a new kingdom, free from the Pajang overlordship. During his meditation on the beach, a 102

In order to become the spiritual protector of the kingdom, the Queen asked to be married to the prince as the spiritual consort of Panembahan Senopati and all of his successors, the series of Mataram kings. There are other folklore surrounding Nyai Loro Kidul’s legend, but since she is of the ocean and traditionally depicted as a mermaid, she is also clothed in green. How to Add a Little Green
Perk up a wallflower room with strategic hits of this vibrant color. Start with the floor. If you want one big burst of green, choose a rug. It is usually less expensive than other sizable furnishings and can be easily moved from room to room when you’re looking to shake things up. Opt for a style with multiple shades of green so it will better coordinate with the rest of your stuff.

Bring on the accessories. Just a few wellchosen pieces will give you a green fix. And you can add and subtract items depending on how much green you want. Real Simple placed a green runner on the console, set the table with olive-colored dishes, and framed scraps of green-patterned wallpaper. Don’t forget the blossoms. Consider green (or greenish) flowers. Forsythia branches, which bloom yellow before sprouting bright green leaves, look great on the console. The Billy buttons, arranged in a light green vase on the table, can last up to two weeks. Also try Lenten roses, which have soft green flowers and foliage.

o truly grasp the allure of Los Angeles, you have to experience the beach side communities. Manhattan Beach will challenge your attachment to reality and the fresh air from the ocean-only two blocks away--will aid in the spell soon to take over. It truly is a daydream gushing into a wish. The quality of life is different on the Westside, and Shade Hotel is the ideal anchor for anyone who can navigate themselves 15 minutes from LAX. What will stand out first is that everyone has parked their cars and is walking. Yep....you heard me right. Walking. Shade Hotel is like a good date that you don’t want to end. With hotel guests buzzing around, you still get the sense that it’s really just all about you. Every staffer you come into contact with seems to love their choice of employers and that glee pours over into your service, from start to finish.

The scene is a mix of vibrancy and serenity. You will find the locals quite easy to chat up, if you are so inclined. The ego and cluster of Hollywood takes a sharp break here, the vibration of the ocean has clearly taken over. The views from the rooftop pool are cinematic. Don’t miss the complimentary breakfast before you hit the beach, either. There are just not enough stars in the nighttime sky to rate this boutique hotel.

You may struggle to believe that the hotel is often close to full capacity; it will be way too quiet at night to comprehend that fact. If you want to feel like a newborn out of the nest, start with the jacuzzi tub. Unpack later. This is exactly what you need after that long flight. This gave me the boost I needed; I’ve not looked back since. I’ve been featured in magazines, fashion shoots, ramp shows, a few TV advertisements, and on sign boards.

NUZRAT SHAH - Casual Portfolio in 2012
In 2006, I left my portfolio with a top agency in Dubai. For approximately six months I heard nothing from them. Though I was disheartened, I kept up my training. Then out of the blue, I got a call from the agency they needed a model with definition for a special fashion article. When I went for the interview I was a perfect match for the client’s requirement. I was lean but they wanted to see a more pronounced six pack and asked if I could achieve this in two weeks. I was the only model who could achieve this. I knew what my body needed to make it lean enough to show the desired definition. Two weeks later I was featured on the back cover of Gen-Y Fashion magazine. After that article, it was recommended that I should pursue fitness modelling.

I moved to Dubai and worked there successfully for six years as a fashion model. I found, though, that I really enjoyed my training and wanted to shift up a gear and pursue fitness modelling instead. Sadly, I didn’t find any opportunities in Dubai to pursue my new dream. In 2009, I got marriedand I am now a proud husband and father. In 2010, we moved to the United Kingdom. Here in the UK, I really enjoy my training. I push myself hard, it doesn’t matter if I am tired from work or not, I stick to my clean diet and training plan to maintain my body shape. Every morning before breakfast, I do a hundred crunches or cardio for half an hour. Half an hour before I train I take “PHD Diet Whey Protein” shake; I find this helps me during long training sessions. I also have a protein shake ten minutes after my training. In the gym I always start my training with fifteen minutes of cardio. My training plan: 1st day: chest and biceps; 2nd day: shoulders and triceps; biceps and triceps; legs and back; all stomach training, and on the 6th day I do aerobics only, resting on the 7th day. At the end of each session I do a 150 crunches to complete my workout at the gym.

I have learned that not everything is handed down on a plate. My first life lesson is that to reach our goals, we must be passionate and prepared. If you want to pursue your dream, then you need to prepare to pay the price, endure sacrifice, and work hard. In 2013, my hard work and sacrifice was rewarded with being published in Asiana Magazine out of the United Kingdom.

HosneY A little part of me died every day of the six years I worked as a banker. I had degrees in economics and political science, but I didn’t find my passion working in a bank. It was just a job. I wanted more. I wanted something that would fulfill me in ways that banking obviously didn’t. So, I took the risk of starting a whole new career. Completely different without even the closest relation to the financial world. I chose fashion design. Three years ago I enrolled in the Italian Fashion Academy. The depth and breadth of all that I have learned and experienced is almost immeasurable. My vision is to create a new fashion in culture in my country while my goal is to develop my own brand that shows how a woman can be modern, elegant, and simple all at the same time. It is better to live a dream.

Thailand “I believe too many people suffer in silence in a World that demands for you to have the perfect ‘social profile’. We all can be a prisoner of things ranging from negative thoughts to self-hatred which results in self harm or harm to others. I want to teach people that its ok to suffer, in fact it is an intrinsic part of being human. By embracing our suffering we can begin to use it as a tool to find our life’s purpose and liberate ourselves and others.” -Ashley Cooper
