FASHION the awakening
&beauty
Paul had awakened early that morning as he had become quite accustomed. Thoughts of all that had happened and all that might happen raced through his mind. He had been under a lot of stress lately and wasn’t sure how things were going to turn out. Since the economic recession his sales career was in a slump and he was having trouble making ends meet. Knowing full well that he wasn’t going to go back to sleep, he made his way downstairs to find a relaxing movie that he hoped would ease his nerves. While the movie would have no affect on easing his mind, it did seem to make the time past faster. Soon it was time for him to get ready for work. He forced himself to take a shower and shave. After he finished getting dressed, he gave his wife and daughter a kiss. The kiss had no real impact, as it had become merely a ritual done before leaving the house. “I love you guys,” he said as he grabbed his briefcase and headed out the door. As he walked down the street, his mind was so busy that he didn’t notice the new blossoms on the trees around him. Flowers had also started to bud along the sidewalks, but it was as though he couldn’t see them. It wasn’t until he reached the bus stop that he noticed something that would change the course of his day. It wasn’t anything big or dramatic, but it would serve as a catalyst to change his thought pattern. It was a sign outside of a nearby coffee shop that read, “You are living, but are you really alive. You are alive, but are you truly living.” This sparked a climatic moment as it brought his many thoughts down to one. “Am I truly living”, he thought. It was then that his bus arrived. As he made his way onto the bus, the thought really had him puzzled. Paul decided at that moment that he would change some things.
He wanted to slow it down a bit and focus on being in the moment. He took a deep breath and looked out the window of the bus. What he noticed awakened him even more. He noticed the blossoms on the trees and the budding flowers that he had so briskly passed only moments ago. “How beautiful!” he thought. As he was beholding the beauty of the new coming spring, he looked further out and saw the majestic, snow capped mountains. They had always been there, but the chaos in his mind had prevented him from truly seeing them. Paul was now awake. He realized that while focused on making a living, he had forgotten to live. When he returned home later that day, his wife noticed that there was something different about him. There was a glow that she hadn’t seen in him in so long that she had forgotten what it was like. Paul made a commitment to himself to live a more balanced and harmonious life. He decided to no longer be consumed by things that he couldn’t control. He would not further allow the things that he didn’t have to stop him from enjoying the things that he did have. He was now truly awake and was determined to remain that way.
Paul was now awake. He realized that while focused on making a living, he had forgotten to live.
The Bleulab Reversible Collection breaks the mold of onedimensional thinking. The collector’s founder and inventor Carl Jones, has created a reversible jean that can take you from day-to-night in the blink of an eye. Using innovative design concepts, extensive fabric testing, construction research and wash experimentation, Jones found the perfect combination of fashion and fuction. Built for today’s woman - an adventurer who is constantly in motion - the styles are named with that in mind: merge, junction, U-turn, RPM, tracks, rotate, driven, shortcut, curve and detour. It’s about embracing those parts of her journey.
behind the jeans Creative Director Carl Jones and the Bleulab design team spent over a year developing what is now a patented garment. Every aspect of the making of the jean is specific and carefully monitored, beginning with the special fabrics that allow each side to look completely different, even though there is a single wash process. The sewing requires infinite precision and special handling in order for all the seams, pockets and loops to be perfectly aligned. The signature “window on each side of the waistband is a unique design that distinguishes and brands the garment without adding any bulk. The trim and hardware were specifically developed to allow the garment to be fully functional on either side. Bluelab is designed and manufactured in downtown L.A. The Bleulab reversible collection is innovative and fresh, yet clean and contemporary. The concept is completely new and the jeans offer a plethora of benefits: they are fashion forward, take less space and weigh less in luggage and maximize use of existing wardrobe. The price points are just as attractive as the jeans: $175.00 - $225.00. And remember...they are 2 for the price of 1!

stablished in 2011, Morts & More was born out of the vision of tailoring for all. Created by two of the founders of MyTailoredSuit with the goal to deliver affordable couture without compromising on style and quality. The vision was born out of the increasing difficulties they had faced when looking for well fitted and stylish off-thepeg suits for various work and social engagements that didn’t break the bank. Realising their dilemma was not an isolated issue and with some in depth research, they found that by sourcing highly skilled tailors out of Europe & Asia they could offer a service that bridges the gap between the high street and high end tailors. The rest as they say is history. Morts & More are able to achieve the best results for clients by blending traditional tailoring with modern style and then mixing it with the clients own personal touches to create unique tailored clothing they love and are admired in. The company has built its success primarily due to word of mouth & recommendations from clients and people who have seen the work done for clients. Morts & More offer the finest in Italian and British fabrics to provide long lasting and impeccably tailored clothing with an outstanding fit. Whether it’s for the boardroom, social event or wedding, Morts & More have the proven track record of helping their clients achieve their desired look.

the book of MoreMen testament from a woman
In Western-American society today, not all sexual practices are equally shared between men and women. Ideologically, our society warrants men more liberty in the carrying out of their sexuality. This is seen specifically in the male ability to date multiple women and be glorified for the act of doing so.
Women, on the other hand, are not so glorified for dating multiple men‌ In fact, women are more likely to gain a negative sexual reputation for exercising such a liberty. I attribute women dating multiple men primarily to this double standard, in the interest of challenging its existence. By challenging this standard, women can reclaim some of the sexual liberty that has been warranted to men only, the stirrings of a revolution. That being said, I feel as though there is reasoning deeper than the interests of challenging the double standard, as to why women date multiple men. I do agree with challenging social norms and admire women who are committed to reclaiming their sexuality through such practices. However, I feel as though there is something about dating multiple men that registers to me as more of a strategic, open-minded approach vs. a revolutionary, vindictive invasion. When playing the dating game, it is common to underestimate or misjudge the weight of what being in an exclusive relationship means. If it is what you want, exclusivity means trusting the significant other with your heart, soul and mind‌ the beautiful, the ugly and the often unstable. Consequently, there is a lot of pressure bestowed upon the people involved in the exclusive romantic relationship that may not be known until the heat permeates beyond the kitchen. Dating multiple men is strategic open-mindedness because it allows a woman to get in touch with what they want in
an exclusive relationship, within the context of different men, with different traits. In the beginning stages of dating, the core of the person you are seeing does not always surface immediately. The more you learn about the person, you are involved with in an exclusive relationship, the closer you become to knowing if you can grow together. By dating multiple men, un-exclusively, a woman gets the privilege of experiencing differentness that monogamous exclusivity lacks. This differentness provides the woman dater with essentially more data, to consider for if and when she decides to pursue someone exclusively. Even more so, different people can inherently bring out under developed aspects of the woman’s personality that dating just one person does always present the opportunity for. This creates another source of information where data concerning what she wants in an exclusive relationship can be drawn from. Love is one of the strongest forces people experience. The breaks and dawns all people have experienced in one way or another make it difficult and sometimes terrifying to navigate through.
Dating multiple men and collecting data from the experience can be used as a way for a woman to get in touch with what she wants in an exclusive relationship. There will never be a guaranteed or easy path to follow in this realm of experience but one can always come home, when they are in touch with themselves. When you know yourself, you can truly know others. Keep calm and date on.

attends 2013 BAFTA Awards
Argo beat the competition to take the gong for Best Film at this year’s BAFTAs, with Skyfall awarded Outstanding British Film. Leading Actor went to Daniel Day Lewis for Lincoln, Emmanuelle Riva was named Leading Actress for Michael Haneke’s Amour, while Christoph Waltz and Anne Hathaway walked away with the awards for Supporting Actor and Actress respectively. Although it garnered the most nominations overall, Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln did not receive one for Best Director. That award went to Ben Affleck for Argo. The 2013 BAFTA award nominations were notable for their variety and quality, representing big-budget blockbusters, stunning international cinema and left-field independent films. The awards were always predicted to be “a wide open race”, and this, to quote BAFTA’s chairman Michael Willis, “really reflects the health of cinema throughout the world.” Stephen Fry hosted the evening, and a stellar list of nominees and leading members from the film industry were in attendance, including Ben Affleck, Anne Hathaway, George Clooney, Ang Lee, Quentin Tarantino, Daniel Day-Lewis, Hugh Jackman, Steven Spielberg, Sam Mendes and Jennifer Lawrence. Hollywood producer Rebecca Wang attended in her capacity as a member of the Academy Circle, which constitutes the charitable side of BAFTA. She is strongly committed to a proactive role in enabling, encouraging and supporting all art forms of creative talent across the film industry. In addition to the high-profile awards ceremonies held annually in London, Los Angeles and New York, BAFTA runs a year-round Learning and Events programme aimed at audiences of all ages and backgrounds across the UK and USA. The programme offers unique access via workshops, master classes, lectures and mentoring schemes to some of the world’s most inspiring talent. The Academy has also in recent years extended the range of access to resources that inform and inspire. Its online archive is a treasure trove of features, photographs and interviews. The 66th BAFTAs took place at London’s Royal Opera House on Sunday 10th February, and a post-ceremony dinner was hosted at the Grosvenor House Hotel.

Red carpet coverage was provided by BBC Three and BBC One broadcast the awards ceremony itself. Four new 360-degree cameras were employed to span the carpet, enabling viewers at home to enjoy the evening’s proceedings. The BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Awards are the Academy’s highest film honours, rewarding the best work of any nationality seen on British screens over the previous year. An independent charity, BAFTA also aims “to support, develop and promote the art form of the moving image by identifying and rewarding excellence, inspiring practitioners, and benefitting the public.”

ASIANSPICE The relationship between beauty and taste may seem miles apart, but just compare the feeling you get when you take a bite of an amazing dish with the feeling evoked by great photographs that highlight breathtaking beauty. When you blend delicious, quality ingredients with the perfect spices, you get wonderful cuisine. And when a photographer puts together a fashion shoot that pairs the perfect model with just the right wardrobe, hair and makeup; everything fuses to create a special beauty that the photographer captures.
New York fashion photographer Steven Paul feels fortunate to have had such a shoot, featuring MC2 New York model Cheera Choo, adorned in bold, brilliant fashions from wardrobe stylist April Spicer. With Cheera’s classy, unique looks that stem from her Indian, Chinese and Thai ancestry, the blend could be called Asian Spice. “It was fashion week in New York City,” Steven said, with “lots of exciting events happening. The snowstorm of the century was supposed to hit New York City and ended up slowing us all down a bit.” But the show -- or the shoot -- must go on, and indeed it did, as Steven, a big proponent of working with others to create and enhance beauty, banded together with his team to bring his vision to life.

hoo’s hair styling was the creation of Darren Bay. His diverse and exciting styles have appeared on the covers of Vogue, Vanity Fair and many other top fashion magazines, and he has worked with leading hair stylists, fashion designers and photographers. “Darren did his magic,” Steven said of Darren, who pulled Cheera’s hair back to frame the model’s face with a shock of tantalizingly wayward curls that brought a playful touch to an otherwise coolly sophisticated look. In addition to modeling, Cheera has experience in other aspects of the arts that can help with the creative process. With training as a stage actress and as a set designer, she brings extra expertise to the shoot. As an actress, she can slip into character. And her experience as a set designer gives her a better understanding of how to work with her surroundings.

I t a l l s t a r t e d i n I t a l y. I was a professional football player at Genova FC, Bari and Taranto. After a terrible injury the doctors told me that I couldn’t play football anymore. I was devastated and I did nothing for several months. My father was a tailor and I had g rown up with a love for fashion. So I decided to move into the fashion industry. The team manager at Genova FC helped me to get into the biggest Fashion University in Milan: The Marangoni institute. I studied there for 3 years and found it even harder than being a football player. Until one day, an ex-colleague called me and asked me to make his fiance a wedding dress. This was the first dress I had designed and made for the wife of a celebrity. He was premiership footballer for Liverpool. After that assignment, I started to receive orders from other football players’ wives. I moved to England and decided to live in London and continued studies at Central St Martins Fashion Design School for another 2 years. When I completed school, I began working for Julien MacDonald. In 2010, I created my own brand; Boypenda by Theo. The name of my brand holds has a very special meaning to me. Penda was my grandma’s name. Her full name was Adji Penda. The meaning of my brand is ‘grandma’s boy’. I opened my first showroom in Soho, London. At the same time I was supplying New Look stores several dresses. In 2011 I received a call from Abercrombie & Fitch New York and they offered me a contract to work for them. I moved to New York City and after 7 months I decided to come back to London to focus on my own brand Boypenda by Theo. I currently reside in Paris and working on my new collection while rebuilding a bigger showroom in Soho. In addition, I am designing for Mango: the black dresses for the season 2012-2013. My name is Theo and I love London.

On the runway, the look of Ola Couture was timelessly feminine gowns. The pairing of bold metallics against floral prints created truly statement worthy pieces, bringing an eccentricity to anywhere in which they are worn. Her designs are as versatile as they are timeless and any women, with any body shape would richly relish the adornment of one of these pieces.
e
YB Couture The look of YB Couture was vintage inspired kimonos creatively revived by the current trend of women’s progressive wear. With the addition of military jackets, masquerade masks and beautifully crafted beadwork, these pieces brought us back in time to old Hollywood and Howard Hughes cinema. The variety of velvets and architecture enhanced by buttons and lace created a look not seen in the industry today but, cherished in the hearts of true fashionistas all the same.
Hands down, the evening gowns of John Paul Ataker were the most breathtaking pieces of the event. The elegant cut and flow of these pieces is stunning, with quality fabrics and details that strike the eye with enough force to turn heads. The future of John Paul Ataker is limitless and is true high fashion look.

AUTUMN/WINTER 2013 COLLECTION This designer pays tribute and celebrates femininity and sensitivity. This collection contrasts old and new; light and heavy; black and white. The perfected 2D cuts of the garments create a 3D illusion which highlights the pure beauty of the female figure. The cloths are sophistatcated and elegant, giving the women who wear them a 1930’s aura of refinement and a subtle hint of the ever so classic Coco Chanel. The collection is speaking volumes and telling a mysterious story of feminine beauty and her mind through the shapes and textures of transparent fine nets, the opaque, thick jersey and wools. The colours that run through the garments are mainly blacks, whites and their shades greys and creams to better express the stratification of the elements and the beauty of the contradictions when they are assembled together. Over all this collection rejoices beauty, femininity, mystery of love from the female view point. Pure grace and class was the shroud of each model who exhibited each couture outfit that left all in a daze.

Francoise It’s just simply not fair. Women have so many more options than men when it comes to fashion. And Francoise Elizee has made this distinction that much clearer. Influences of Grace Kelly and Jackie-O are quite apparent in this internationally acclaimed collection. Distinctive materials such as the label’s signature lizard, crocodile, and python skins are an important source of inspiration for Francoise. Buy fewer bags and buy better quality accessories.

No woman has ever complained about the touch or taste level from a man of the Lehr Family. The love for all things beautiful started with granddad the tailor, then passed down to Sam the architect-turnedjeweler, and was eventually passed down to the heartthrob son Jared. Yes, women often will search for him at the jewelry counters of Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus just to bat their eyelashes. So taking the above into consideration, it’s no surprise that ‘architecturally beautiful’ eloquently describes the present-day Sam Lehr collection. Art, beauty and fashion is in their blood. Hollywood’s new darling Sofia Vergara is a fan. Are you?

for him... With all the new power and forward thinking sweeping over our nation’s capitol, it should be no surprise that we are discovering new emerging talent in the fashion arena there, as well. Andrew Nowell’s “Savile Row” inspired men’s collection is both snazzy and posh. The disheveled chap next door can get lots of options here, and the lack of attitude will remind you that you are NOT in NYC. Don’t miss Andrew’s evolving line of underwear for men, too. The skyler blue boxer briefs should go home with you, as well as the model wearing them if you plan your visit to his locale at just the right time.

beejoos.com BeeJooS is structured as a social enterprise and as we travel the world to feature the most unique accessories from artisans and emerging designers, we also make sure to donate a percentage of proceeds to charities dealing with the most pertinent issues communities in these emerging countries face. Our charities differ in cause, as often problems faced by artisans in Vietnam are different from those faced by artisans in Madagascar. We are currently focusing on a charity called Educating the Children (http://www. etceducation.org/home/), where we are helping build the first girls’ school in Kenya in the Masai Mara. BeeJooS is featuring handmade bracelets made by Masai women and all proceeds go to the building of this school for the young girls.

(Aborigine for jewelry) was conceptualized by Mauritian-born, London-bred, New York- residing Founder, Teejana Beenessresingh. Ms. Beenessreesingh is an MIT graduate, who dedicated most of her senior year circumnavigating the world. Ms. Beenessreesingh identified a need for an online global lifestyle accessories platform while shopping in the bazaars of the Far East. Captivated by the plethora of stylish souvenirs displayed in these local bazaars, she realized that shoppers outside the Far East had very limited access to these products - shoppers either had to travel to the source markets or pay significant mark-ups at stores that simply white-labeled the same artistry finds. After graduating from MIT and completing a couple of successful stints in reputed investment banking firms in New York, she decided to combine her passion for curating alternative accessories and travel to design a platform that aimed to fulfill this need - and BeeJooS was born. “BeeJooS is uniquely positioned to provide online shoppers with timeless and decadent accessories at affordable prices right at their doorstep. We travel around the globe in search of one-of-akind statement pieces and handpick our products based on how best they reflect local customs and specific cultural nuances of the country of origin. As the world becomes flatter, our shoppers - the selfstyled global citizens - crave knowledge of and seek access to fashion products from far-away cultures. In addition to curating accessories, we seek to educate our consumer on the countries, customs and cultures that we source our products from. In short, we seek to be a provider of global fashion locally and bring out the global citizen in you says Ms. Beenessreesingh.
She adds further “Keeping in mind our goal to be the best online portal for providing “fashion meets travel” lifestyle experience, we also feature a travel blog that provides content and insight into whats new and whats hot in terms of alternative travel experience and local travel secrets. Through our blog, we seek to constantly educate our shoppers on hidden itineraries in featured destinations, including go-to sauce spots, off-beat local dining, secret martini dens and unique lodging venues. Our theme of “Shop, Support and Savor The Globe” is based on our belief that one’s passion for global fashion and travel need not be mutually exclusive. BeeJooS’s mission is to provide our “global citizen” shoppers with a single-door access to affordable and alternative fashion and travel experience.”
