It is a medically approved machine with extensive clinical trials which has seen dramatic results in 98% of users!

To promote this process, a lymphatic drainage is carried out immediately after the treatment which also assists in the elimination of toxins and liquids. There is no downtime so it works perfectly with your schedule, even in your lunchtime.

Beara Beara is a brand who design and handcraft a unique collection of leather handbags, satchels and backpacks. Having begun life in the famous Bricklane Market, Beara Beara Bags are an iconic sight on the streets of East London and can now be seen being worn by famous musicians and actors around the world. Inspired by classic designs and the vibrancy of life, Beara Beara is the creation of Irish designer Jake Bullough. Jake has drawn on his colourful past of adventure to create a collection full of fun and individuality. Whilst writing a book in South America Jake began working with skilful craftsmen and has since built a brand around uniqueness and quality. When pressed on the background of the company the charismatic designer is somewhat reserved, a surprise when as I already know the business has a fabulously warm and ethical background. Jake explains how he believes that the fashion industry often takes advantage of the ‘Ethical Brand’ label for publicity while caring very little for what it actually means. So even though Beara Beara supports up to 30 families of artisans in Bolivia, he refuses to promote the brand on its values but instead prefers to focus on what he feels are the real reasons why the brand has become so popular; style and quality.

bearabeara.co.uk

The idea of individualism plays a vital role in the brand’s success. Having not studied fashion or design, Jake seems able to focus fully on his own ideas of form and beauty as opposed to continuously searching around the industry for ideas and influence. This confidence is then taken through the brand, appealing to customers who pride themselves on their own distinctive style and hold quality in higher regards than over-priced branding. It is clear to see that a great deal of passion and dedication go into creating each and every Beara Beara Bag. By using robust natural leather the team creates classic satchels and handbags with clean iconic looks that will actually become more beautiful over time.

THE FULL COLLECTION IS AVAILALBE AT

bearabeara.co.uk

By setting super soft natural suede with brilliant bright colours within an extremely strong frame, Beara Beara have designed a range of backpacks like no other, not only unique but that will last for many years. It’s an inspiring story that connects the world from the rural countryside of South West Ireland to the backstreets of the bustling city of La Paz to the glamour of the fashion capital of London. This is one special brand that provides an antidote to the throwaway market of the high-street and helps create a sense of fun, style, individuality and belonging in people’s lives.

Accessories and Art for the Booklover Wrap up with a good Book Scarf! Let everyone know about your great taste in books by wrapping a page of one around your neck! This infinity scarf will keep you looking & feeling both warm & intelligent. Each Storiarts Book Scarf (Patent Pending) is created from American made, cream colored fabric, super soft 100% cotton jersey knit, about 65” in circumference and 12” wide. Fabric has been doubled over and sewn along the edge and at the center to create a thick, chunky, and moldable “page.” Because of the screen printing process (done by hand) there are slight differences from scarf to scarf, making each one unique while adding to the antique and worn look of the piece. Consequently scarves vary from one to the other and there might be some areas where the ink is a bit darker and others where it is slightly lighter. Either way, the ink has been heat set and will not wash out.

shop601.com Visionary, eclectic, and iconic, Karl Lagerfeld would most certainly have been an enlightened mind in the Age of Enlightenment. As a fashion designer, photographer, publisher, designer, and also film director, Karl Lagerfeld has created a universe in which every line is perfectly under control, each detail of absolute importance. The Cartesian mind has hatched a caustic, ultramodern, highly structured style, with an allure and a manner that emerges through graphic symbols that have become his unequivocal hallmarks.

Icon in fashion world like no other. We are proud to announce Melissa’s newest partner. This is one of the most exciting collaborations that our company has ever started” says Paulo Pedó, Marketing Director of Melissa. “Karl Lagerfeld, the most iconic designer of the 21st century, has widened his kingdom by joining the world of Melissa. Lagerfeld’s great talent, synonymous with couture, will be translated into a shoe line, expanding our consumer base and making his brand more accessible for all”, complements Pedó. Besides creating for luxury brands such as Chanel and Fendi, Karl Lagerfeld has launched his own fashion house. Under his creative direction, the KARL LAGERFELD brand portfolio is rooted in Kreative, iconiK, Kool and accessible-luxe apparel and accessories. The fashion house produces ready-to-wear for men and women, watches, eyewear, footwear, plus an elaborate selection of bags and small leather goods. Creative to his core and passionately interested in the world around him, Karl Lagerfeld works with a variety of prestigious brands on high-profile projects. His collaborations have included St Dupont, HOGAN, Shu Uemura and for the first time with a Brazilian company, Melissa.

“Melissa has been great in translating Karl’s inspirations and designs in genuinely fun and fashionable products that many women will be very happy to wear”.

Karl Lagerfeld instinctively grasps every molecule from the atmosphere and turns it into the mood of the moment. His style delves deep into his cosmopolitan background and into his perfect mastery of languages, which he acquired in Hamburg, where he was born in 1938. As soon as entered the world of fashion still a very young man, and in 1954 he won the Woolmark Prize. The coat he created for the occasion, which won over the jury, was made by Pierre Balmain, who recognized the young graduate’s talent and took him on as his new assistant. Three years later, Karl Lagerfeld was appointed artistic director of the Maison Jean Patou. Karl Lagerfeld is intriguing and ever-questioning, never leaving anyone indifferent. His ability to capture, anticipate, and interpret tomorrow’s trends always fascinates. Just when ready-to-wear fashions were first taking shape, he embarked on a career as a freelance fashion designer in France, Italy, Britain, and Germany. As from March 2013, you’ll be able to choose from four exclusive Melissa shoe styles designed by Karl Lagerfeld, a man who has become an Left: Model Cara Delvine

Very satisfied with the collaboration, Pier Paolo Righi, CEO of the KARL LAGERFELD brand, says “Melissa has been great in translating Karl’s inspirations and designs in genuinely fun and fashionable products that many women will be very happy to wear”. We are thrilled about the launch of the Karl Lagerfeld brand in Brazil through his collaboration with Melissa. He will produce mini-collections for four consecutive seasons.

melissa ginga + KARL LAGERFELD

If Karl Lagerfeld were to define the Brazilian word “ginga,” perhaps he’d say it’s a tropical savoir faire that exists only in Brazil. But if he were to translate “ginga” into a fashion product, the result would be this kitten heel that contrasts curvy lines with a square front that’s robust and powerful. The savoir is reflected in the two colorful stripes that run from the heel to the sole. Très chic.

The Melissa Melissima + Karl Lagerfeld reflects this intersection in a harmonious and singular style. A medium-height stiletto, this model comes in matte or polished colors. It’s one of those pieces that tops off any look, bringing with it the strong and authentic personality of the designer to Melissa fans.

melissa incense + KARL LAGERFELD

In fashion, don’t take anything too seriously. If you follow this piece of advice, you can free yourself up to play with different looks and bring together various references in a fresh way. That’s what Melissa did for the Incense + Karl Lagerfeld shoe, which encourages good humor through the ice cream applied on the heel, transforming it into a surprise and innovative element of the outfit. Available in diverse glittered flavors, this model passes on the most fun and stylish message that you could give to those around you on gray winter days.

melissa glam + KARL LAGERFELD

The Melissa Glam’s shape has been the star of various Melissa collaborations. This season, under Karl Lagerfeld’s vision, the shoe has been transformed into a futuristic- looking flat with an appliqué of half-spheres at the top. Very much in Lagerfeld’s style, this is a stunning Melissa. Besides having a high fashion factor, this particular model is perfect to help intensify a long silhouette, made ever more so when paired with skinny jeans and Lagerfeld’s masterly made, sleeveless, oversized silk shirts. For a glam touch, the glitterry versions are key to turning you into an It Girl By Karl.

LET THEM EAT CAKE

& THREADS

It all began with a little girl playing dress-up in her mother’s closet and imagining all of the dreamy places she’d go looking like she came straight out of the pages of a magazine. That passion for fashion only grew as Alissa Bush decided to follow her heart’s desires and pursue opening her own boutique so she could ignite that love of beautiful clothing and perfect finishing touch accessories to women who were once little girls twirling in their closets, joyful of all of the wonderful possibilities. In order to gain experience and knowledge of all things fashion, Alissa majored in Fashion Merchandising in college and studied in France at the Paris Fashion Institute and Make-Up Designory in Los Angeles, California. She has worked for many of her favorite retailers in sales and managerial positions in order to gain insight into creating her dream store. Being a fashion visionary served her as a stylist in LA where she used her creativity to keep her ideas fresh and was able to bring those ideas to a magazine shoot. Armed with everything she had learned she decided to open “Twirl” in 2008 with a unique business model of being able to bring her great fashion finds into homes where women could essentially play dress-up with their friends! And even better were the price points for items ensuring that looking good wasn’t going to break the bank. These parties for fashionistas were in such high demand that growth was essential so the first store location came about in 2011. Now not only were parties in full effect but those who saw the online posts of must-haves were able to stop in and pick them up and shop around for other wardrobe staples and affordable glamour. Naturally as word spread of Twirl’s fabulous fashions that had a fun and flirty attitude, the next step was to open an online boutique. Beautiful dresses, stylish tops, chic jeans, seemly skirts and top-it-off accessories at the touch of a button to bring sheer delight and possibilities to start the day when twirling in the closet. Twirl strives to maintain a high level of service both online and in the store because customers are not just viewed as customers they are also viewed as friends. The best friendships always have a strong basis in honesty and communication so we look forward to hearing questions, comments and stories of where your Twirl fashions have been. We love bringing smiles to your faces and helping you look your best every day. Looking forward to twirling with you!

letter fromthe editor What being a Mother has taught me.

I became a Mother on October 16th, 2009. It was the most petrifying yet happiest day of my life. At this point, as an entreprenuer, I had owned several businesses, but none of those successes or failures have ever been as challenging or rewarding as being a mother. Upon my first glance of her, my thought was, “I did it...I really did it.” I remember asking the nurse as she placed her on my chest, “Where do I put my hands?” I was extremely nervous and overwhelmed with emotion. I couldn’t stop staring at her. Her features were so perfect and beautiful. She began to cry, which of course made me cry and then I remember saying to her, “I don’t know what I am doing baby and neither do you, but together we will figure it out.” As a mother, I am constantly asking myself, “Am I doing a good job? Is she a good kid? Am I creating a world for her where she feels loved and safe? Am I doing the best that I can? Should I be doing more?” I think it’s normal for a parent, especially a mother, to feel as if they aren’t doing enough for their child. When I begin to feel this way, I remind myself of something I heard someone say, “Your child came through you, not for you.” I was a little confused the first time I heard this but it has come very clear to me now. It’s not always my job to provide, instruct and guide her but also to allow her to provide, instruct and guide ME. We are both learning more about ourselves, each other and the world - together. Ajna has shown me to live in the moment. She has reminded me how important it is in life to simply stop and take a break. She has taught me to pay attention to detail. To notice the small and beautiful things. To smile and speak to strangers because they just might be an important part of your path. And most importantly, to live fearlessly. It is so easy for her to walk up to another little girl and say, “Please I play with you?” They say yes most of the time but not always. But that will not deter her from asking the next little girl. I’ve learned so much from this. And that is, to never give up. If someone or some “thing” says no to you, you move on because eventually, you will get a “yes” and it will be because you didn’t give up. I am my daughter’s mother. I do hope she grows up to be an amazing woman someday. I think we all want that for our children. Being a Mother can be extremely challening sometimes, but at the end of the day, I look at her and I am very proud. To all the mother’s this Mother’s Day, “be proud of yourself and of your children. See yourself in them and be reminded that they have the ability to teach and enlighten you just as Ajna has taught and enlightened me. “

“She was 10 weeks old the first time she smiled at me. It was then when I saw myself in her.

WEDDING SEASON 2013 beginning with... the dress.

Making his third venture into the world’s Couture Capital,

January 23, 2013 saw Syrian fashion couturier, Rami Al Ali, unveil his Spring/ Summer 2013 collection to the city’s fashion-elite. Al Ali celebrated his seasonal return with a bold collection of designs inspired by The Great Gatsby. A period of intrigue and drama, The Great Gatsby invokes images of wealth, glamour and rebellion. Gone were the chains of obligation, as the post-war era hinted at a newfound freedom. No longer clad in repressive attire, the female silhouette became celebrated and exposed, with daring fashions created to break down barriers, and rules! A time when passion and lust overshadowed duty and responsibility… the roaring Twenties had begun! Remastering this iconic age, the collection is expressed through a blend of distinguished hues. A neutral spectrum of shades ranging from cool grey, mocha beige and champagne bestow a vintage allure, whilst singular gowns in fluorescent hues set a vibrant tone with a modern edge. The colour palette is further enhanced through an exquisite array of fabrics, purposely selected for the distinct way they cascade down the body forming straight, graphical lines. Sheer muslin, flowing lamé and crepe marocain are all artfully manipulated to create fresh new seasonal contours. Key elements of the period provide instant association, with a creative display of tassels and fringing playing homage to the Flapper-style of the generation. Art Deco motifs further enhance the theme, with eclectic visuals portrayed through embroidery, or structured into the silhouette itself. Sleek profiles offer a simple yet impactful angle as the less-is-more rule applies, with touches of sparkle and shimmer keeping the line playful. The twenty-four piece collection perfectly captures the essence of the period whilst bringing the story to life in a twenty-first century world.

one of the world’s MOST EXPEN$IVE cake$

In March of this year, we created a 6 tier dummy cake, just under 5ft tall, covered in 4,104 diamonds to the value of ÂŁ34 million pounds (around 52 million USD) in conjunction with The National Gay Wedding Show in the UK. We were approached by the event organizers to exhibit and I suggested we made a dummy cake to put by the catwalk to help promote the show and our product. It further escalated to this amazing diamond encrusted design and now the whole thing has gone global! It was a great event and caused a real stir. As a company we have been trading for only 7 years and bake all our products on site. It is owned by myself, Jules, and husband Tim. We employ between 1 and 3 staff and everything is made by hand and great pride is taken is the execution of each design.

Marriage: 10 Things

to think about before you say, “I Do!”

&beauty

“In all of thy gettings, get an understanding” King Solomon. It’s no wonder why many marriages end up in divorce or severe cases of unhappiness. Most of us lack an understanding of what marriage means. There’s no cookie cutter recipe and what marriage means to one couple might be completely different for the next. The following are ten points to help you decide whether or not you have the basic building blocks.

1 2 3

Relationship: Do you have a good relationship? Companionship is not the same as relationship. Companionship is company, but a good relationship is good company. Everyone wants someone to be there, but without a good relationship, you can sometimes feel alone even with the person next to you. You may have heard the phrase, “I married my best friend.” It’s the best policy because if you aren’t friends, it’s not likely that you will want to spend much time together.

Selflessness: You have plans to go hang out with your friends. You

haven’t done this in a long time and you’re really looking forward to it, but your significant other has become painfully ill. Do you go out regardless or do you stay back to tend to their needs? You may find this to seem simple, but many have been faced with the issue. Are you willing to sacrifice your desires for the needs of your partner? Even if your partner doesn’t say anything immediately, you can rest assured the offense will likely be held against you at some point.

Self Deception: If you doubt your commitment to your partner or your

by The Student of Life partner’s commitment to you, it’s best to refrain from marriage. There’s no

point in deceiving yourself. If either person isn’t fully committed, it will reveal itself in more stressful ways later. They may say, “I’m going to change after we get married,” but that’s not likely. It is common for us to hope for the best, but with a matter so serious, it’s best not to turn a blind eye and deny the relationship lacks commitment.

4

Hardship: How well can you and your partner cope with hardship?

When things get tough or either of you are faced with a challenge, do you tend to fly off the handle or handle it rationally? Do you tend to blame one another rather than working together as a team to resolve the issue? Chances are that if you can’t handle small challenges, you won’t be able to handle big challenges, which are almost inevitable.

5

All of a Sudden: Although it’s a common expression, know that nothing in relationships happen all of a sudden. Phrases such as, “He just changed all of a sudden” or “She suddenly didn’t want anything to do with me anymore,” are usually the result of not paying attention. There are usually gradual happenings that we ignore until it blows up or it’s too late to reconcile. If you’re paying attention, nothing will catch you off guard.

Politics: Some people don’t view this as a problem, yet every time election season

6 7

arrives and sometimes in between, there is much unrest over who’s the best candidate. Whether you’re Democrat, Republican, Independent or don’t give a rats ass, it’s something of which you and your partner should probably have an understanding.

Religion: I’ve found that couples can sometimes live with the different religious

beliefs of each other, but when a child comes into the picture conversations tend to become tense. Some couples get into serious debates about this when bringing a child into the world, but this discussion is better had beforehand. Are you going to baptize your child? Will they be required to go to church, etc. You may say that you’ll cross that bridge when you have to, but chances are if you’re not prepared, you may have to cross that bridge alone.

Children: How many do you want or do you want them at all? Chances are

8 9

after the first child is born, you may not want to have another. All jokes aside, this is a rather serious question, but you should expect to revisit this topic of conversation over time. You may initially wish not to have children, but change your mind down the road and vice versa.

Infidelity: Believe it or not, there are some relationships that have no concept of

infidelity. In rare cases, both people may agree that it’s perfectly fine to have intimate relationships with other people. By the same token many may find the slightest flirtation with another to be a direct violation of the marital union. Infidelity in the number two cause of divorce, but what qualifies as infidelity varies from one relationship to another. You should know how your significant other feels about it so that there aren’t problems later in the marriage.

10

Finance’s: Do you agree on the use of funds within the household? What one

person considers being frugal, another may consider being a cheap skate. What is reasonable to one may be considered frivolous spending to another. Financial disagreements are the number one cause of divorce, but it is preventable. Talk about it, not just vaguely, but in detail.

There are no guarantees that the above recommendations will lead you to a successful marriage, but the understanding will hopefully greaten your chances. Don’t be afraid to have deep conversations with the person with whom you intend to spend the remainder of your life. A thirty-minute conversation today may save you a lifetime of pain. The happiness of marriage is heavily dependent upon the two people in it.

some of the world’s most breathtaking underwater photography

I must say that I get very very excited when a client enables me to innovate in a session. The underwater trash the dress (TTD) session is something that isnt very common these days, but in the Riviera Maya, there seems to be quite a bit more sessions happening these days. Danielle and Brandon’s session is the first ever session where the bride and groom literally shed their clothing to get down to their birthday suits, totally nude and comfortable in their nakedness together. We labeled this the “Adam and Eve Trash the Dress session”. This Adam and Eve session is innovative in the field of trash the dress, its risky and something that you just don’t see every day. The session takes merges the nontraditional photo shoot into a fashion shoot, underwater. We even have a cool shot with Danielle exiting the water with her tough “Converse” shoes. We hope you like this shoot, its all the world of Trash the dress was waiting for, something new and something fresh and maybe even offensive to some people…for us, its the most fun type of trash the dress session on this planet.

Tegan fell in love with our team’s use of light to accent the water and since them, always dreamt with these romantic, ellegant and dreamy pictures! Our surprise‌.was her absolutely gorgeous floral organza wedding gown!!! Their charm and fun personalities made this shoot of one of our favorite ones!

We were super excited when a super amazing photographer from Antigua, British Virgin Islands, decided to have her destination wedding in Tulum Mexico, at Las Ranitas all based on a recommendation of Del Sol Photography. Vanessa is an international award winning photographer that we respect very much, so needless to say it was an huge honor to be asked to shoot her wedding and also an underwater cenote trash the dress session. The cenotes in Tulum are some of my favorite places to shoot, crystal clear waters and at the right time of day, the sunbeams entering the water are magical. This underwater fashion shoot was so much fun and with the right clients, almost effortless‌ although I think Vanessa would say she was freezing cold! The resulting underwater images are almost from a fairytale‌ another underwater mermaid bride who can dream big and imagine photography as an art form. We are so thankful and wish Vanessa and Seumas an amazing life together!

Phoebe and Jonathan are one of those couples that we will always remember with huge smiles on our faces. They invited us to Thailand last year to shoot their wedding and an incredible trash the dress shoot with elephants and waterfalls, an out of this world, magical experience. They recently travelled to the Riviera Maya to have a trash the dress shoot on the beach at Le Rêve Hotel & Spa and in a sacred cenote. This couple is unique for having trash the dress shoots with Del Sol Photography on two sides of the world! Bride Phoebe was as beautiful as on her wedding day, wearing stunning custom gowns in the traditional Chinese red (the color just POPS underwater!), the Western white bridal gown and a an enchanting creation of glittering gold. Her designers are a secret, sorry, some things a girl just needs to keep to herself! Adrian from StylingTrio did his usual terrific job on Phoebe’s makeup, love those red lips and smoky eyes!

Active couple Marissa and John were a real pleasure to shoot in this sacred cenote in the Riviera Maya. They told us they love extreme sports like hang gliding, jet skiing and scuba diving and with Marissa being a dance teacher, we knew this would be a beautiful shoot with these adventurers. It’s always a pleasure to have a relaxed day with a bride and groom, especially after sharing their wedding day with them. A little bit of rain didn’t dampen the day (we were all getting wet anyway!), the raindrops made for some beautiful shots! The love shone through and this beautiful couple rocked the shoot!

creative necktie movement In 1926, New York tailor Jesse Langsdorf invented the 3-piece construction neckties cut on a bias. Prior to his improvements, ties had been prone to twisting and misshaping, and were harder to tie. Langsdorf ’s innovation grew popularity and became the ties we know of today. However, uniformity is a trade-off to Langsdorf ’s design. These ties can only be, well, tie-shaped. For this reason, ties from 1920’s onwards mainly vary on widths, fabric patterns, and colours. Even the wildest deviations from conventional ties were still limited to reintroducing styles from prior decades, such as the square-tipped ties or knitted ties. After nearly nine decades of stagnation in ties and the stifling-corporate-world stigma that becomes associated with ties, a new way of engineering ties finally comes around (That’s us!). With this innovative leap forward, ties can finally take on new silhouettes and new designs. Along with this comes a new identity for ties: bold, creative, and sexy.

Photographed by Machuca Photography

creative necktie movement For form and function, we were motivated to skip the tying of ties. Every time a tie is tied, friction and twisting shorten its lifespan. Our goal was to minimize distortion and protect the integrity of the ties. We aim to produce timeless designs, so we want our ties to have the longevity to match. After many trials and refinements (seven, to be exact!), we developed the interchangeable knot. The Link Closure Knot is an asymmetric piece which forms a perfect four-in-hand knot. Inspired by the early 19th century detachable cuffs and chained cufflinks, the knot is elegantly secured with a stainless steel chain link.

THE

PARENt TRAP Dealing with in-laws who drive you insane By Alaina Brandenburger

Imagine having a friend who questioned and criticized every move you made – from how you cleaned your house to how you raised your children. In most situations, you’d tell this person to take a hike as soon as they opened their big, fat mouth. However, if it’s your husband’s mom, you can’t exactly tell her to pound sand without risking upsetting the hubs. While most people have their differences on some occasions, some in-laws are absolutely relentless in their intense dislike of their man’s choice in a spouse. This can make life unbearable – especially when the in-laws are close enough to stop by whenever they want. There are many situations in which the emotions run so high that it’s hard to control the situation with a level head. This can set up some pretty big battles later on. So what do you do?

Set boundaries

This isn’t always easy, but it’s necessary to establish up front what is and is not acceptable in your house. While you may concede on smaller issues, such as a motherin-law who insists on buying frilly dresses for your daughter who prefers jeans, you should stand firm on more important issues, such as disciplinary differences like spanking or other forms of controversial punishment. Make sure that your husband is on board. Uniting on these issues is important, because your inlaws need to be made aware of behavior that is absolutely unacceptable, but it has to be done in a respectful way. Dr. Alicia R. Camlibel, a psychologist who works extensively with families, states on her blog, “Never put your partner in a position where he has to choose between you and a relative. Try to understand and support the relationship and accept it for what it is, whether it is a good or bad.” It isn’t important to start an argument over every little thing that you disagree with, but make sure that things you consider to be the most important are addressed, and that you and your spouse approach it together.

In-Laws are people too

Much like celebrities, it can be easy to gloss over the fact that your in-laws are people. It is tempting to look at them and see only the things that get on your nerves. This is especially true in situations where your in-laws have very different beliefs than you. If you are a staunch liberal who has married someone with super-conservative parents, there may be a tendency to focus on this above all else. Kiara*, who has been married for five years, states, “I have extremely different beliefs than my father-in-law. It’s gotten to the point where I dread going over there, because I know that once he starts talking politics, I’m going to be uncomfortable for the entire occasion. I feel like I can’t talk to him, because anything I say may start a rant that makes my blood boil.” Focusing on these things tends to take away the human qualities of your in-laws, but they are people with feelings too. Everyone knows that topics such as politics and religion are hot button issues that should be avoided. Some people just don’t understand this, and they don’t care. Kiara learned that if she didn’t engage her father-in-law, she ended up having a better time in his presence. “I stopped feeling the need to defend myself. I had to stop taking his points of view as a personal attack on me, even though they felt like one. Whenever he brought up a subject I didn’t agree with, I changed the subject to something we had in common, like sports or television.” Kiara was able to diffuse her situation by remembering that there was more to her father-in-law than his political beliefs and focusing on things that they had in common.

Try and see the big picture

Often, the fact that your in-laws are mean has nothing to do with you. Some people have a hard time accepting the fact that the family dynamic has shifted. When Julia* married Shawn six years ago, she had no idea what she was getting herself in to. “Shawn’s sister Eve seemed to hate me before she even met me. From the second we started dating, she wasn’t outwardly hateful to me, but she limited contact as much as possible. When I would talk to her, she would give me one-word answers, and she would talk to Shawn like I wasn’t even in the room.” As the relationship progressed, Julia learned that Shawn and his sister had been extremely close. Rather than being happy for her brother, Shawn’s sister saw Julia as a threat to their relationship. She then refused to have anything to do with her.

“Behind every successful man

stands a surprised

mother-in-law.” (Voltaire) This can also happen when mothers are overly possessive of their sons. Chicago-based counselor Johanna Nauraine states on her blog, “In some instances the mother-in-law may not like or approve of her future daughter-in-law. This may be due to certain personality characteristics she perceives in her son’s fiancé, but it may also be based upon a conscious or unconscious belief that ‘no woman is good enough for my son.’” In these cases, there isn’t anything that you can do but grin and bear it. While you may want your husband to stand up for you, you don’t want to do anything that risks driving a wedge between him and his family. Be courteous and polite, and realize that the animosity has nothing to do with you.”

It’s not always easy to turn the other cheek, but setting firm boundaries and getting to know your in-laws as people can go a long way toward keeping the peace. Just remember that the only person whose actions you can control is you. By not taking things personally and choosing your battles, you can learn to have an amicable relationship with your in-laws.

It only feels like yesterday that London Fashion Week took place. Preparations for the next Fashion Week in London are in full swing for September 2013. Gordon Flynn PR and Lady K Media have collaborated and created “The Angels of Fashion” annual event in September 2013 to support The Prince’s Trust.

Article written by Lady K (above). Lady K is wearing YEN Designs and is also the chosen Brand Ambassador for YEN Designs International. Photographed by Muzna Butt Photography.

This event is to support young and upcoming designers from around the world and provide a platform for them to showcase themselves during the prestigious London Fashion Week. “The Angels of Fashion” believe that fashion is for everyone. The Prince’s Trust supports 13-30 year olds who are unemployed, struggling and at risk of exclusion, young people leaving or in care, and young offenders or ex-offenders, giving them an opportunity to better themselves and learn new skills. This event will be taking place on September 14th, 2013 at one of the top hotels in London. Designers all over the world will be exhibiting never seen collections, “Iconic Fashion”, catering for all tastes and styles. One of the top designers exhibiting is halfway around the world. This “Diamond” is already causing a media frenzy globally; Yen Designs International. Yen AB, co-founder of Yen Designs International, has always been drawn to illustrations and beautiful things when he was young. It was only when he got tired of his chosen profession, Nuclear Medicine, that he realized his passion and talent in fashion design and stumbled onto his crossroad in 2008. Despite his intent to eventually jump into the fabulous world of fashion, his inner entrepreneur was very careful to tread into the industry unprepared. He first had to consider his goals, brand aspirations and commercial targets as well as the right people who would help him put these goals into fruition. It seems that it was meant to be for the fledgling designer for it was not time before the “House of Yen” became an establishment. At this present time, this three year old fashion house serves mostly ladies from the Royal and Ruling families in United Arab Emirates (UAE) as well as some selected clienteles from Europe, Russia and Australia. Yen’s high profile clients, diplomats, film and TV stars, royal families and elite Europeans have become accustomed to his breathtaking designs in the

form of contemporary kaftans, haute couture creations and wedding dresses. Establishing an exclusive global luxury brand, Yen Designs International has covered editorials on various print publications both local and international. Scoping various form of media – TV, Music Videos and Film. Yen divides his time among his three branches in the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait. He is also ecstatic about signing his prêt-à-porter line in a boutique chain in the UK. His busy schedule is also filled with preparations for his upcoming finale at “The Angels of Fashion” London Fashion Week o/s this September 2013.

DARK

The Gibson Girl was the early 20th Century’s feminine ideal – smart, sassy and seductive. In New York fashion photographer Steven Paul’s latest shoot, Paul updates the era’s iconic imagery, exploring the dark desires hidden just below the Gibson Girl’s oh-so-prim-and-proper surface.

“Our concept for the shoot evolved from this simple question, ‘What would the ultimate girl about town have desired 100 years ago?’” says Paul. “While the Gibson Girl was often depicted as flirting and teasing men, she was still committed to traditional ideals of marriage and motherhood. This photo shoot asks, ‘What secret obsessions did she keep hidden because of societal expectations?” Paul is at his best when he develops a strong rapport with his model – and it shows in these images. His ethereal, haunting photos capture the dark desires and secret obsessions behind America’s original fashion icon. The images evoke questions of unfulfilled sexual fantasy, passion and eroticism without overly sexualizing his model. In fact, some of the shoot’s most seductive imagery is when model Amanda, from Major Model Management NYC, is fully clothed. “Amanda’s gaze says everything,” explained Paul. “At times her eyes can be intensely come-hither while at other times she looks almost nostalgic or wistful for an unfulfilled passion or lover that cannot be hers.” The latest trends in fashion photography place growing importance on the model as an expressive human being – and Paul is leading the way with his fashion photography.

“I try to capture the in between moments – a subtle glance or look that crosses my model’s face,” says Paul.

These in-between moments convey deep emotion while also allowing individuals to impose their own dark, hidden desires on the images. “I wanted viewers to not only imagine the dark desires of an Edwardian pin-up girl, but also project their own passions and thwarted needs onto the images,” says Paul. Paul worked closely with stylist Christopher J. Brown of Closet by Christobal to create the sultry, seductive look that is equal parts fashion-forward and classic Gibson Girl. The rich materials, elaborate fascinators and upswept pay homage to Edwardian style, while details like the jacket’s trim are decidedly more punk rock. Darren Bay created Amanda’s hairstyle, paying homage to the Gibson Girl’s iconic upswept bouffant with a thick braided hairstyle. The plaited styling is an avant garde update for the braided styles that have been all the rage at the fall fashion shows this year.

Photographer: Steven Paul Stylist: Christopher J Brown Hair Stylist: Darren Bay Make up: Dan Bayu Model: Amanda from Major Model Management NYC Designs By: Closet By Christobal Digital Retoucher: Steven Paul

Bay and Paul have worked together on previous photo shoots, including previous editorial features for Fashion Affair Magazine. Bay is a true visionary, creating avant-garde styles that are striking and evocative. Dan Bayu created Amanda’s seductive look. With soft lips and gentle contouring, Bayu let Amanda’s deep eyes take center stage, drawing us into her dark passions. With more than 13 years in the makeup industry and editorial publications to numerous to count, Bayu is the consummate creative artist. “Brown, Bay and Bayu were truly a dream-team for this shoot,” says Paul. “Collaboration was seamless as we created the iconic imagery in my New York City studio over a seven-hour shoot.” So what does the modern Gibson Girl desire? We’ll leave her dark desires up to your imagination...

Sarah-Lee Milligan is an up-and-coming 28-year old German fashion designer. She lived and studied in Mexico from 2002 till 2007, a very important period time in her creative formation. Now she is a passionate young fashion designer presenting her graduating design collection. This collection was inspired by one of the most powerful cascades in Europe, the “Dettifoss” in Northeast Iceland. The water here flows so softly into the deep that one cannot even imagine the force hidden within such a monumental cascade. Strong distinctive rocks form a contrast to the water. These two elements are reflected in this collection by bringing gently flowing thin silk together with coarse dark wool fabric and intensifying the contrast with cuts and shapes. “Dettifoss” is a truly harmonic contrast rich collection.

fashion charity show took place in London 30th March 2013. But it wasn’t just the collections that impressed the guests, but a little girl whose voice stunned the venue.

Lorna Diana Rees is only 14 years old. She started singing when she was only 11 years old. Living with her family in Swansea, South Wales, she started singing around the house as a hobby. It was at a family barbeque Lorna sang Celion Dion’s song ‘My heart will go on’. Her family and friends were so impressed, but it was her parents who felt that this gift should be heard around the world. Lorna is also a talented guitarist and pianist and writes her own material. Not only has she sang at her school concerts, she has also sang at many charity shows such as Cancer Research UK and Joshua Foundation. And in March this year, she sang at a fashion show for her first time.

voice

written by Lady K

While the models graced the catwalk, Lorna sang and played the guitar. The audience was amazed by this “little girl with the big voice”. Simon Miller, one of the guest’s who attended this event stated, “Even though the collections were amazing, that little girl blew everyone away.” He went on further to say, “Even though the song was coming to an end, Lorna knew this and improvised. She continued singing and both her singing, along with her guitar, were in perfect rythm with the models’ steps.” But even at a young age, Lorna understands the importance of education. She wants to carry on with further education and will study music from an academic perspective. Her dream is to perform at the O2 arena in London. With the speed of Lorna’s talent and as an inspiration to a younger generation, this dream will soon become a reality.

MODEL

of the month

Nazzarette

Before we begin, let me introduce myself. My name is Madison Nazzarette, and this is just a little taste of my story. I know my words are limited and yet, I have so much to share with the world. It all started back in my little desert town of Las Cruces, New Mexico. When I was fifteen, my mother picked up the phone book and called the first photographer she laid eyes on, Cristal VanCarson. My only idol and inspiration is Gina Harrison. She is an up and coming model, actress, singer and dancer who deserves to be recognized for her amazing talents. She has the most impressive poses, and her photos truly speak for themselves.

Madison nazzarette

MY DREAM is to inspire others to see that our flaws are what make us perfect, not the vanity we seek in perfection. I find beauty in those who express their amazing character. Your personality is what truly makes you shine, and your character is a big part of your personality. Everyone wants recognition in some way or another. But aside from the money and being acknowledged, I would like to send a message;

There is strength in perseverance. Whatever the dream, if you keep your head high and a positive attitude, anything can be attained; because anything is possible.

batiste

For those with an adventurous palate, don’t forget to stop and take better care of your hair. But if you’re always on the run, Batiste Hair has the first dry shampoo in a spray form that is finely suited for your gym or travel bag. No water needed, just freshen your hair in a matter of seconds. Re-charge that greasy, lifeless crown and stop hiding under those floppy hats. The Batiste Original won me over by how fast it absorbed product build-up and gave me a fresh start. And there is a wide array of colors for everyone. For those that love to hit the snooze button, this product has your name written all over it, as it will shorten your prep time in the morning.

The Obakki Foundation isn’t your typical non-profit. To start with, fashion is our main fundraising vehicle. Through creative campaigns and authentic storytelling, we engage and inspire the modern consumer, connecting them to causes in a way that’s meaningful to their own lives. It’s a unique model in the philanthropy world and one that has driven real results. Magical things happen when you combine compassion and creativity. Our efforts are currently focused on clean water and education for developing communities in urgent need. These communities need help now, so projects are chosen for their potential to make an impact quickly, but also sustainably. We are a hands-on organization, building relationships within communities to learn where help is needed most. We plan the projects and raise the funds. We direct, execute and manage the fieldwork. We partner with local indigenous groups, regularly visit project sites, and report back on results.
