My Autumn/Winter 2013 collection is inspired by the golden age of Russian Opera. The lavish interiors of Saint Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre inspired me to begin work on what became this glamorous and opulent collection, rich with sophisticated shapes, gilded and embossed fabrications, and deep jewel-toned colors. I wanted the most dramatic pieces of this collection to feel as luxurious as the grand imperial curtains that grace that stage -- trimmed with delicate appliques and hand-stitched embroideries -- to recall the lush, moody interior of the Theatre.

An evening in and around the opera was on my mind as well for the rest of the collection. I imagined what these women attending would wear and how they might put each look together for fall. Soft angora wool jackets with whispers of Russian military detail are worn over elegant evening cocktail frocks to make this collection modern and powerful.

Fashion Affair: At what age did you become interested in the beauty industry? Who or what inspired you? Damone Roberts: At 2 years old. Miss Ross the Boss was my inspiration.

Will she exert her authority over the iconic estate, or will she suffer the same mysterious fate as other mistresses who went before her? Paul leaves that final question up to our imagination. With Paul’s “Return to Manderely” shoot, the fashion photographer more than achieves this goal. The dramatic lighting, combined with model Daria’s somber poses, skillfully balances elements of the macabre with high fashion. Throughout the photo shoot, Daria holds her own against the house; she’s clearly no shrinking violet. A thoroughly modern and powerful woman, Daria embraces the estate’s shadows, dark interiors, and cold stonewalls. She’s alluring and provocative, daring the viewer to follow her into the estate.

“The makeup and hairstyle are fiercely fashion-forward, while still evoking gothic romance,” said Paul. “Aside from one dramatic lace blue dress, we intentionally selected all black and white pieces. We kept color to an absolute minimum during the shoot, letting the lighting – and lack thereof – tell the story.”

“Daria is as much of a seductress in this shoot as the estate,” said Paul. “The interplay between these two characters creates sexual tension and drama. Is Daria truly in charge of the estate – or does the estate have other ideas? The estate is haunted by its former mistresses. Are they out to get Daria or has she joined their dark cult? These are all questions we hope the viewer will ponder after seeing our images.”
One of Paul’s favorite and most compelling images from the shoot is an image of Daria standing partially nude in an empty room. The dark woodwork and floors are almost claustrophobic – one can feel the tension between the house and Daria.
“There is something especially haunting about our model standing partially nude in a room that’s completely barren of all furniture,” said Paul. “In this stripped down state our model is both vulnerable and incredibly strong. She owns her sexuality and is not ashamed – the image is a message of empowerment in the face of fear and the unknown.”
“Manderley is secretive and silent, shrouded in mystery,” says Paul. “Before this shoot, I watched Alfred Hitchcock’s cinematic adaptation of the novel Rebecca, and I knew I wanted to capture that same gothic romance feeling in this shoot.”

SPOTLIGHT Almost every little girl goes through a phase of dreaming to be a fashion designer one day. I was also one of those girls. However, with me that phase never ended, and that dream is turning into a reality.
I recently graduated from the Italian Fashion Academy, while still pursuing my diploma in Integrated Marketing Communications at the American University in Cairo. Although, it was not easy doing both studies at the same time, however it was, definitely worth it. After doodling tiny dresses on the back of my academic textbooks, or not having the slightest idea what a patron actually is, I can proudly say that I learned everything there is to know about fashion designing, pattern making and sewing in that academy.

Some of my fondest childhood memories were spent with my mother watching “classic” movies. I watched many, many movies as a child, especially ones starring Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, and Judy Garland. There is one movie in particular that comes to mind, it is the 1954 movie “White Christmas”. In the movie Bing Crosby sings a song written by Irving Berlin entitled “Count Your Blessings (instead of sheep)”. The main lyrics are: “When I’m worried and I can’t sleep, I count my blessings instead of sheep and I fall asleep counting my blessings. When my bankroll is getting small I think of when I had none at all and I fall asleep counting my blessings.” These lyrics reflect an “attitude of gratitude” which is often forgotten in today’s busy and fast paced world. Gratitude has been shown in many studies to not only create mindfulness but is an important tool in stress reduction. The practice of expressing gratitude is one of many stress management techniques that can diffuse negativity, replacing it with a sense of goodwill towards all, that many people find empowering.
he daily stress from the good and bad in our lives can produce anxiety, tension, anger and pain. These negative emotions can lead to physical pain as tense muscles, higher blood pressure and unhealthy coping mechanisms combine to bring you down an undesirable path. One way to combat negativity and stress is to practice gratitude, focusing your mind and energy on the positive in your life.
The practice of counting your blessing and expressing gratitude is simple. There are many ways people choose to do this: for example some people keep a gratitude journal, but even making a list on a scrap piece of paper will do the trick. When you are distressed, simply find a quiet place and begin listing positive things for which you are truly grateful. Some people jot down simple notes and stop at five positive things. Others list out every single positive blessing regardless of its magnitude, looking for the positive until they feel they have exhausted all possibilities. Others
quietly spend a few minutes before they get out of bed each morning and a few minutes before they fall asleep at night to list everything they are thankful for. After listing all you are thankful for, you may wish to repeat the list out loud or to meditate on each positive item on your list, embracing the goodness of the blessing and releasing the negative in your life. You may want to share some of the positive things in your life with someone else. Verbalizing your gratitude can be very powerful. If you feel stirred to thank someone for these things, make a call or write an e-mail or letter to the person towards which you feel gratitude. The benefits of expressing gratitude have even been documented in scientific studies. It appears
that expressing gratitude works as a protective, healing, emotional energy force. In one study conducted by the Mississippi University for Women and UC Davis, patients who had received organ transplants were separated into two groups. One group took daily notes on treatments and progress. The second group took notes on treatments and progress and wrote down five things for which they were grateful each day. The group
You may want to share some of the positive things in your life with someone else. Verbalizing your gratitude can be very powerful. that kept a gratitude journal reported higher mental well-being scores at the end of the study. “Count your blessings” is simple yet life-altering. Gratitude, that very specific feeling of thankfulness in your heart, allows you to see and absorb all you have, forgetting for a moment all you may lack. It connects your brain with your heart, and gives you the ground to be more giving, effective, loving human. Being grateful allows generosity to flow and makes us more receptive. The more you love what you have, the more positive energy you send out into your world and the more open you are to receive it. So, how about it, sit down for a few minutes each day and take Bing Crosby’s advice, and “fall asleep counting your blessings.” I guarantee it is a very effective, cheap, and easy way to help you feel better. Conceived by our Ugandan Directors and with the beneficiaries as our advisory board, we’ve developed a truly innovative approach to job creation in Northern Uganda. The program combines a fair and consistent income to alleviate poverty immediately and capacity building training to address the future needs of the beneficiaries. We commit to working with each crocheter for a minimum of 3 years in order to ensure that we provide the highest quality of training and mentorship through personal budgeting, savings, loaning and business management topics. Our goal is to equip the women of Northern Uganda with the financial assets and knowledge to enter into the local economy and thereby end their dependence on humanitarian aid.

The heart of fashion - A multidimensional phrase that embraces the inspiration, motivation
and cultivation of ones love of beauty, self and self-expression. It seems like a simple four word tagline but it underlines the many stages of fashion and the love of beauty shared by every participant. The heart of fashion can be seen on runways, in photographs, in clothing designs and sketches but it also lies in the thoughts that serve as the pulse that gives life to creativity. It beats through the passion of workers and flows through their penetrating desire to contribute to the world and complement its natural beauty. The heart is the epicenter and the result of all that is fashion, whether we always recognize it or not. We watch shows but what we don’t always see or understand is the inspiration behind the looks. We see graceful draping of taffeta accented with harsh, dark leather. The model looks so graceful, edgy and invincible. Immediate thoughts of purchase cross our minds and we begin to plan for the perfect occasion to wear the new look. We look, anticipate, and eventually consume but what we don’t see, is that at the heart of the designs is a unique story of a mystical love that ended in devastating heartbreak. We don’t see the designers desire to release a pain while simultaneously attempting to remain strong and true to self. We robotically flip through magazine pages until something catches our eye, not knowing what it is about the photo that keeps us from averting our gaze. There is something about the light on the page; something about the look in the models eyes that reminds us of a life we once dreamed of or lived. That thing that stops us in our tracks is the heart of the photograph. It is the photographer’s ability to tune in and instinctively capture the exact moment the light illuminates the excitement of opportunity and manifest dreams in the eyes of a young model often lost in a world of countless unknowns. We can all relate to moments of uncertainty and hope for an opportunity for things to be a little different than they are- for us to be different than we are. The heart of fashion is the vision behind transformation. It stretches far beyond the hopes of an artistic soul and reaches us all as either a reflection of who we are or a projection of who we want to be. It’s the confidence of a woman in the perfect LBD that accentuates her curves while whispering her worth to anyone who sees her pass by. It is an everyday choice of many to own the uniqueness society previously labeled a flaw. The heart is a desire to transcend boundaries of mundanity, the ability to dream beyond circumstance and get a quick “pick me up” during difficult times. It is the way we imagine the world and the way we want the world to imagine us. We are all consumers but we all have the ability to create and contribute in our own ways. It doesn’t necessarily take a talent or a skill perfected through years of formal study. As individuals we have the opportunity to express ourselves according to our own definitions and standards of beauty. We have the choice to look beyond the physical and seek to understand the true stories of fashion. As I think about the ways I personally have overlooked deeper meanings and intricacies of the beauties I enjoy, I find a desire to know more about my fashion “faves” and what my choices say about who I am. Let’s all delve deeply into ourselves so we can not only enjoy the beauty pouring out of the hearts of others but so that we can continue to discover our own hearts of fashion and our own way of adding beauty to the world.
