ello everyone, hope this issue can help you on the path of following your dreams! Yes we are all in fact living a dream! A dream that we once believed in, and a dream that we keep alive everyday as we work to make it come true! In Top Choice Magazine we showcase people who have followed, or are following, their dreams. But for some of us actually realizing our dreams is a completely different story. I want to share a technique that helped me realize my dreams in the past, and continues to put me back on track when I lose sight of them. First go for a walk, by yourself, to any other place that makes you feel good, such as the park. Have a seat on the ground, close your eyes, slow your breathing and relax. Soon you will start to hear all the noises around you; noises that were always there, but that you most likely never noticed. After five minutes of relaxing with all the unique noises, open your eyes and see, see how beautiful the place that surrounds you is, it is then that you will start to feel really good, because that is when your mind starts to become clear and when thoughts of happiness and joy will begin to flourish. With good thoughts come good words and with good words come good habits, then like a snow ball, your good habits will help you realize your dreams!

The Delta Journey By David Silvestre

The journey begins on a warm spring afternoon in Portugal, but you wouldn’t know we were in Portugal unless I told you. As we look out at the passing landscape it is reminiscent of an African Savannah, the only difference is that the grass is green. Lonely trees are our only friends, the beauty is captivating, but we begin to wonder if we followed our directions properly. We are on our way to the Delta Cafes Headquarters and Production Factory in Campo Maior, a city in the Alentejo region, but so far the only signs of life are the small villages that are surviving outside of long forgotten castles. How can Portugal's largest coffee manufacturer be out here? We are approaching a village and decide to ask some gentlemen for directions; when the words escape their mouths it is the first sign that we have reached our destination because these men are surely "Alenteanos".

Continued from“The Delta Journey” on page 15 We asked the men from Alentejo if they could help us find the Delta Cafes Factory, they answered us as if they were members of the Nabeiro Family, as if it were their factory. We continue the journey with a new found confidence, now we were sure we were going the right way. As we arrive in Campo Maior we are merely steps from Spain. Campo Maior translates to “Big Field” in English…but they may need to consider changing it to “Big Field with Big Factory!” It is almost unreal to imagine one of the largest factories that I have seen laying in the middle of empty rolling fields, but there it was! We met with Mr. José Sequeira who had the entire day professionally planned for us, the first stop on the list was The Delta Cafes Coffee Museum “O Museu Do Café”. Before we started our tour we are treated to - you guessed it, a Delta Café espresso, but this wasn’t your traditional espresso, it was a special blend perfected by Delta which isn’t available for sale anywhere in the world! Our tour of the museum taught us the detailed history of coffee and all the steps it takes to get from the plant to your cup…suddenly our drive to the factory seems like it was a lot shorter! It’s lunch time and when you’re in Alentejo you must enjoy some traditional Alentejo cuisine. Next stop on Mr. Sequeira’s agenda is a trip to the Nabeiro Family’s restaurant “Adega” for lunch with the Nabeiro Group’s Management team. I have always enjoyed food from Alentejo, it is among the best in all of Portugal, but this lunch experience was truly the greatest I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying. One dish in particular that I cannot seem to forget is the Cod Fish of Gold “Bacalhau De Ouro”, which we enjoyed with an “Adega Mayor” wine (A Nabeiro Group winery). I hate to even think of the dessert, because jus the thought of it makes me crave its taste in my mouth again and again! And of course, it would be a crime to finish a first class meal without a Delta Espresso and this restaurant only serves the finest blend, go figure. Our afternoon begins with a visit to the factory, although it is quite large, we have already had enough coffee to do laps around it! We met up with our lovely guide Maria, who took us through the entire manufacturing process. From receiving the beans to the shipping of packaged products, we saw it all and it was enough to make our jaws drop to the floor.

They even have a laboratory of “coffee scientists” who continue the quality control process even after the beans have been selected. Each step in the manufacturing process is manned by professional staff who share as much dedication to the brand as the family who owns it. I could swear that each of them were part of the family! I now have a renewed respect for the coffee I drink every morning. Finally our day was complete, or at least that’s what we though. Mr. Sequeira had another place all lined up for us, it’s time to see where the wine we had at lunch comes from, it’s time to visit the Adega Mayor winery. If you’re like me, you figure all

Standing Tall Born in Chicago, the Founder of Pacific Quorum Properties Inc. has called Vancouver home since childhood. Embarking on real estate investing at age 15, with the support of Mother, Pat, John Peccia was laying the groundwork for a successful career in property management. After the usual paper routes and after school jobs, John followed in the footsteps of his Father Jack, by enlisting in the United States Army. Active duty with stations in Texas and West Germany, followed by reserve duty in Washington State, helped cultivate the then 17 year old’s leadership skills. Military career highlights included achieving the rank of Sergeant, being awarded the Audie Murphy Leadership Award, becoming a Drill Sergeant, and earning four Army Achievement Medals. With a foundation setting military career behind him and his mid twenties approaching, it was time for John to get serious about a career in business. Drawing on his early real estate investing and newly developed leadership skills, property management was an obvious choice. Know Your Position: Conducting IP Audits

IP is a shield and a sword and, frankly, could be a cash cow. The critical component in employing trade-marks in any of these methods is to know your company‘s trademark portfolio. Conducting sporadic IP audits is important to establish what a company’s IP assets consist of, what the holes are, which rights have been maintained and which rights have lapsed.

Ask yourself the following questions:

Franchise System Changes In Challenging Times

And The Requirements Of Good Faith And Fair Dealing

ecent economic challenges may have franchisors considering changes to their current franchise systems. A franchisor may be seeing steady decreases in royalty fees and adver t ising cont r ibut ions, staff reductions, delays in payments to suppliers or landlords, or reduced inventor y purchases from franchisees. The response may be to temporarily defer or waive fees, begin location specific promot iona l ca mpa igns, at tempt to negotiate concessions with suppliers and/ or landlords or increase the frequency of audits and inspections of franchisees’ books and records. A franchisor may also wish to adjust the products and/or services the franchise system offers. If you are considering making such a change to your franchise system it is important that you consider the concepts of “good faith” and “fair dealing” and the consequences of these concepts to your system in times of change. The Arthur Wishart Act (Ontario), (the “Act”), regulates a franchisor’s obligations to its franchisees. The Act imposes on each party to a franchise agreement the duty of fair dealing in the performance and enforcement of the agreement and provides franchisee damages against a franchisor who breaches the duty. The Act specifically states this duty includes the duty to act in good faith and in accordance with reasonable commercial standards.

The duty of good faith includes: ›

A party may act in its own interest, but must also have regard to the legitimate interests of the other party;

The duty to act in good faith is only breached when a party acts in bad faith. Bad faith is conduct that is contrary to community standards of honesty, reasonableness or fairness; and

Good faith is a two way street. Whether a party under a duty of good faith has breached that duty will depend, in part, on whether the other party conducted itself fairly.

The use of your contractual right to change, for reasons other than what you say or what is reasonably expected based on the overall relationship, is questionable. Although you don’t have to put your franchisees’ interests first, you must always give their interests reasonable consideration. Success or failure of a strategy for change in a system will depend on how accurately the threat of the current economic climate to the system has been assessed. How well has the threat and possible responses been communicated with franchisees? Is the proposed change reasonable given the circumstances? ou may not believe it, but after the Best Buddies Charity Event (see “Best Buddies” on page 59), Top Choice went to the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex in Downtown Toronto to attend the official gala for Azores day. Azores? It’s easy to miss...but impossible to forget! Azores is a Portuguese archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean approximately 950 miles from Lisbon, Portugal. The Azorean Islands is a collection of 9 islands, all of which have volcanic origins. What does this have to do with Canada? Well, as you may already know, there are over 250, 000 Portuguese people living in Toronto, but what you may not know is that the majority of these people come from the Azorean Islands. This event marks the first steps towards acknowledging the importance of Portugal's emigrants, in particular those from the Azorean Islands, commemorating the first Azorean street festival “Dia dos Açores” (Azorean Day). The spectacle was made possible by one of the Portuguese community's strongest leaders, Mr. Carlos Botelho (President of Casa dos Açores and Capelas Construction Ltd), and the entire organization team. We were anxious to capture president Carlos César of Azores, and his entourage of Azorean Government delegates, as

continued from page 29 they interacted with nearly 1,000 Azoreans that attended the spectacular event! As depicted in the photos, it truly was really a royal reception. This is what you get when you take a live parade outside the Liberty Grand, accompany it with a warm brisk breeze off of Lake Ontario, follow it with musical performances and awards in the Grand Ballroom, top it off with a meet & greet networking cocktail, throw in live broadcast coverage on TV & Radio by RTP Internacional, and put it in a well-organized package...it was definitely leaps and bounds above any event of its kind (and I'm not just saying this because I am from the Azores). The ceremony was divided in two parts, the official speeches and award presentations, and the networking cocktail with all the members from the Azorean government! Many outstanding Azoreans received an award directly from the president, symbolizing the appreciation for all of the contributions they have put into society. This recognition not only motivates these great minds to keep pressing on, but also fosters the leadership in attendees and viewers and listeners around the world. Seems like the little Azorean Islands are making a big impact “Azorean Style”! There is no doubt that the Azorean communities around the world are a good example of what Azoreans are really made of, which is a testament to why they are adding another star to the current 9 stars on the Azorean flag, whereas the current stars each represent one of the 9 islands, the tenth star will represent the communities outside of Azores! I can't imagine a greater way to honour the Portuguese communities around the world! Last but not least, we would like to commend Suzana Fernandes and Luis Filipe Cabral for being unstoppable when it came to do the impossible, and being

Everyone knows that Canada has really strict rules when it comes to public events, but it’s even more difficult when free alcohol on the city streets of Toronto is involved. Well, the impossible

Something that has never been done before in any part of Ontario, Azoreans had their free meal, Sopas do Espirito Santo with red wine on College Street in the heart of Downtown Toronto. Many have already called the first Dia dos Acores event a slap on the face of well renown Portuguese events, because the achievements of this events were so outstanding for such a small organization! Who knows, this could be another “Espirito Santo” miracle.

he Theory of Six degrees of separation says that anyone on the planet can be connected to one another through a chain of acquaintances that has no more than five intermediaries. The theory was first proposed in 1929 by the Hungarian writer Frigyes Karinthy in a short story called “Chains”. Today we still use it to explain how we are all connected, and by thinking like this we are led to understand how important it is to treat everyone as we would like to be treated. Imagine you are looking for your chance to get into showbiz and you are on your way to a job interview. You are running late so you are driving pretty agressively and cut someone off on the highway. When you arrive at the interview you are shocked to find out that the personal assistant of your potential employer was the person you just cut off...there goes your opportunity out the window. We are going to take a look at the Six Degrees of Separation theory in action. I am pleased to introduce you to George Pimentel, one of the world’s premiere celebrity photographers. George is a (Luso-Canadian) from the Azorean Iaslands of Portugal, just like me, and since the day he decided to follow his father José Pimentel’s footsteps into the world of photography, he never looked back! Pimentel’s passion for photography is quite obvious, you can hear it in his voice, feel it in his actions, and see it in his eyes! Everything about his work screams perfection in photography. Although Robert De Niro was the first celebrity George ever photographed, it was his experience with Bruce Springsteen that changed his life forever. One day George discovered that Bruce Springsteen was going to be in town and, on a whim of pure passion, George put it in his mind that he was going to get his photo. So George takes off to the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Toronto and competes with the pros to capture Bruce’s photo. But Geroge is not satisfied there, he runs back to his studio (near Dundas and Lansdowne) and heads into the darkroom (we are talking pre-digital photography here) to develop the

prized shot. Photo in-hand, it’s back downtown for the hard part of the story, delivering it to Mr. Springsteen. This is the part where George discovers that it is easier to take a photo of a celebrity than to give a photo to a celebrity. But when others would call it a day and quit, George puts himself in high gear; screaming Bruce’s name and searching for a way to break through the barrier of body guards. He used the photo as a passport to anyone who attempted to stop his pursuit, maybe it was the photo raised high or the continuous calling of Bruce’s name that got his attention, but finally the most satisfying words George could ever hear escaped Mr. Springsteen’s lips, “Wait, let him pass”. As if from 100km/hour to 0km/hour, George calmly walks past the security and thanks Bruce as he gives him the photo. “Wow look at this...” Bruce says, and as he shakes George’s hand, he looks him in the eyes and continues “you are a hard working man”. Then Bruce walked into the nearby elevator, photo in hand; if only Bruce knew how his subtle words would inspire one on the worlds great photographers. Fast forward to the present and “hard working” is an understatement, want proof? Just visit Pimentel’s studio and get ready to pick your jaw off of the floor, because you are going find pictures of celebrities like Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, George Clooney and (of course) Bruce Springsteen...just name it, and they’re there! What many people seem to believe is that George is paparazzi, which is a common misunderstanding; George is the actually quite the opposite! George is a red carpet photographer and an authorized personal photographer for the stars, capturing the private angles of their life that the public only wish they could see. So, if you haven’t figured out your connection with Bruce Springsteen and other celebrities, let me explain. Grandparents to teenagers, the “little” magazine covers a wide range of readers! PRk During photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), the surface cells of the cornea, called the corneal epithelium, are removed instead of creating a LASIK flap. What does the future hold for the Top Choice Award? We take a look at the past and present for a glimpse of the future By David Silvestre

t would be funny if we answered this question by telling you that “we aren’t going anywhere”…but it’s true! The Top Choice Award is here to stay, we are achieving the goals that we set out to accomplish and each survey, magazine, event, and award presentation is giving the Top Choice Award momentum and recognition as a household brand. So we are not going anywhere…but yet the Top Choice Award is popping up all over the world. We have satellite offices in Brasil, Australia, USA and Portugal as we begin the first leg of internationalizing the Top Choice Award. We have a long road ahead of us, so we wanted to take a look back at some great moments in the past, its helps us realize how far we have come in such a short time. We probably won’t be seeing you anytime soon, but we are sure that you will be seeing us! ■

e had the greatest pleasure when we recently attended one of Toronto’s most entertaining, fashionable and lively fund raising events of the year, “The Thrill of Ascot” at Woodbine Racetrack. This annual fund raising event was conceived four years ago by John Elwood to raise funds to support the vital programs for Best Buddies Canada, whose mission is to support persons with intellectual disabilities. This year’s event was an outstanding success and we were thrilled to contribute to it. We watched the nine, breathtaking thoroughMadam Katrina Mulligan (Judges’ Chambers, Ontario Court of Justice) , bred races and observed the beautiful ladies dressed ‘Ascot Elegant’ in John Elwood (Event Chair for “The Thrill of Ascot” Event) and Penny Shore dazzling hats and fashionable ensembles, and gentlemen who dressed in their spring finery on a glorious, sunny Spring afternoon in May. Our good friends Morris Lucchese and his brother Fab Lucchese invited us to join them at this unique charity event at Woodbine Racetrack. In attendance were many of Toronto’s most distinguished business and cultural leaders, as well as an international crowd who flew in from Palm Beach, New York and Europe. Best Buddies is a fund raising organization with chapters in 42 countries worldwide. It was founded in the United States by Anthony Kennedy Shriver in 1989. Best Buddies Canada was established 15 years ago and now has chapters in more than 175 high schools, colleges and universities across Canada. Through its programs, students and individuals with intellectual disabilities are matched in one-on-one friendships, based on their interests. They spend valuable time together enjoying the same experiences that most people take for granted. Best Buddies’ programs open new worlds and lasting friendships for all participants. Some of the afternoon’s highlights included a fabulous, gourmet buffet, outstanding entertainment, a private betting cage, a visit by one Palm Beach, Florida Supporters George and Carla Mann of Canada’s greatest jockey’s of all time – Sandy Hawley, silent and live auctions, nine thoroughbred races and more. There were also two important presentations. The first honour was the ‘Spirit of Friendship Award’ to James Raymond Cowling in recognition of his $ 500, 000 donation to Best Buddies. To date, this is the largest donation ever made to the charity. Another very special moment was the presentation of the ‘Ascot Leadership Award’ to Fab LucExecutive Director, Steven Pinnock hands the mic to chese, a well-deserved honour to one of Best Buddies beneficiaries a generous and compassionate man. As a father, husband, and CEO of the Jaymor Group, Fab has overcome many challenges and has achieved great success. We congratulate Fab for exemplifying determination and for supporting “The Thrill of Ascot” right from the very start. And, congratulations to Best Buddies!

There are those that are for multiculturism and those that aren’t. Multiculturism is a belief derived from Moral Relativism. Basically, we should not be judging people outside of their own ethical beliefs. So does multiculturism matter? In some ways it does. For instance it differentiates Canada from its American neighbour. America is really one big “melting pot” whereas Canada strives to treat new comers more patiently and as contributors to its cultural mosaic. Canada seems to cherish their cultures and tries to encourage their development.

To be part of an event of this level, one must remain calm, which tasks were the most difficult to reach?

Beyond remaining calm, it’s necessary to have “Jogo de Cintura” (the ability to improvise), diplomacy and lots of organization. The event is very detailed and we who work with the organization cannot miss one detail, it’s the only way we can guarantee a successful event! I could say that even with our experience in organizing events, each one has different and particular details that make them unique, but nothing is impossible when we work with professionalism, efficiency and seriousness. ■

lens grinding. Carefully saving his money as he gained the expertise he needed, Karim waited for his chance to strike out on his own. In 1967, he set up a laboratory in a dance hall in the former Elmwood Hotel in downtown Toronto, and then moved his operation to Elm Street. Next, he bought and rebuilt old equipment from a closeddown lab in Chicago. Karim’s dream was becoming reality. Armed with dozens of pairs of his very own and brand-new lenses for sale, Karim began to knock on doors.

4. A MAN OF VISION 1. EARLY DAYS

When he was just nine years old, Karim Hakim suffered through the loss of his father. The young Iranian left school to support his family. After a brief stint at a Tehran blacksmith shop, Karim found employment grinding magnifying glass from old window panes. As a young boy, he learned many aspects of the eyewear business, from lens grinding to equipment maintenance and upkeep of worn machinery. Long before he knew it, Karim was sowing the seeds of one of the most successful optical companies in Canadian history, by learning from his experiences and finding opportunities where others saw adversity.

2. A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITY

As a 14-year-old, Karim set his sights on completing his education and tried to reach the former Soviet Union to enroll. Caught by a border guard and returned to his native Iran, Karim was undaunted in his effort to improve himself, and toiled in night school to learn how to read and write. Five years later, Karim enlisted in the Iranian army and enjoyed his first tastes of the world that awaited beyond his own borders. He emigrated to Germany and also worked in Switzerland, where he learned modern methods of grinding optical lenses for precision instruments and eyeglasses.

3. SETTING SIGHTS HIGH

In search of a future where he would find the success he craved, Karim came to Canada and found work in the field of ophthalmic 70

Karim’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to the shops of opticians and optometrists who supplied him with frames to mount his lenses and paid him the not-so-princely sum of about $4 per pair. And although Karim’s reputation as a quality lens grinder soon became well-known, he quickly realized that he needed to become his own middle man if he wanted to capture more of the $80 retail price of a pair of eyeglasses that his optician friends were able to charge. Karim decidedhe needed to learn more about marketing strategy; specifically, something called “vertical integration.”

5. WHOLESALE MEETS RETAIL

In the wholesale trade, his profit margin was less than one dollar. By making his own lenses and selling directly to the public, his profits increased to over five dollars, with prices still well below those of other shops. Karim decided that the key to bigger success was to find a way to market his quality, lower-cost products directly to the public. Opening a small storefront operation, Karim sold dozens of pairs of eyeglasses during the day, and then would often stay at work most of the night grinding lenses to fulfill his promise to his customers of 24-hour delivery on every order.

6. GOING THE EXTRA MILE

Karim’s philosophy of honest value, quality and personal attention brought customers flocking to his retail outlet, which became so busy that customers had to wait outside until someone left. Satisfied customers returned often, and brought their friends and family with them. To accommodate his burgeoning business, Karim moved his www.TopChoiceAwards.com

Not wanting to turn anybody away, Karim went the extra mile to grind special lenses for cataract patients and provide other unique services as requested by his customers.

7. KEYS TO SUCCESS

One of the many keys to Hakim Optical’s success was Karim’s commitment to hiring, personally training, and mentoring the best young staff he could find. As a result, many have stayed with the company for decades, working as opticians and technicians. As well-trained staff began to run more of the technical side of the business, Karim’s time was freed up to enable him to focus on developing new retail opportunities. Today, customer value and quality remain integral to the company’s mission statement, and factor largely in Hakim Optical’s extremely loyal client base.

8. QUALITY FIRST – AND FREE FRAMES By purchasing frames at bargain prices through bankruptcy sales, Karim launched his innovative marketing strategy of offering free frames with the purchase of a pair of lenses. Soon, he was buying thousands of low-priced fashion frames directly from manufacturers and offering a much wider selection of frames. To keep standards high, Hakim still offers a oneyear guarantee against breakage on all frames. Karim enjoys recounting the story of competitors’ objections to his claims of having the lowest prices in town. After thorough investigation, the case was dropped when it was revealed that Hakim Optical’s claim was completely valid.

9. MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

“A pair of glasses isn’t just a device to aid your eyesight,” says Karim. “They’re fashion.” Many

customers are attracted by the store’s philosophy that eyewear should also look good and flatter the face. Today, Hakim Optical offers a selection of more than 3,000 fashion frames imported from as far away as the Far East, Italy, France and Germany. The golden rule at Hakim remains the same in 2008 as it was in 1967: serve as you would be served. Today, 80% of the store’s clientele are repeat customers. In a typical day, the company sells at least 1,000 pairs of prescription eyeglasses.

10. A CANADIAN SUCCESS STORY By consistently offering value, selection and excellent customer service, Sir Karim Hakim has turned a one-person operation into one of the most successful optical companies in Canada, with over 40 million pairs of eyeglasses sold to date. Today, Hakim Optical has 140 showrooms and 100 one-hour factory outlets in Ontario, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and is expanding further into Western Canada. A supporter of Ride For Sight, Karim regularly dons helmet and leathers before hopping on his motorcycle to participate in this and other vision-oriented charitable causes. here are some people in this world who we never expect to meet, you know the kind I’m talking about; you can’t see them in concert or meet them at a book signing, they are what we call “unsung heroes”. You can call it destiny, call it what you like, but we NEVER expected to meet Luìz “Felipão” Scolari, yet alone have him receive the Top Choice Award! There was something truly magical about the night he, and the complete entourage of FPF (Federacao Portuguesa de Futebol) delegates, attended our event; the same magic that revealed the unlimited frontiers of the Top Choice Award. It was February, 2006, our 3rd award show and the final week of preparation, when we received a call from Mr. Alexandre Franco – a well-respected figure in international sports scene and Editor In-Chief of Post Milénio Newspaper (Top Portuguese Newpaper of that year). Mr. Franco informed us that the delegates of the FPF accepted our invitation and they would be available to attend our event. So without hesitation we booked a limousine and set a table for their arrival. Instead of going public with this great news, we reserved the surprise for our attendees and let’s just e p say that surprised was li e F íz u L only the beginning. As they arrived by limo and were introduced, a hush of silence moved through the crowd; some began laughing, thinking it was a joke and others sat in suspense at the thought that it might actually be real. The room’s silence was broken by Nelly’s song “Força” and the stillness of the crown replaced by thunderous cheering as the anticipated guests approached the stage. After a brief speech from the honoured guests it was our turn to present Scolari with the Top Choice Award on behalf of Portuguese-Canadians; for leading the Portuguese World Cup soccer team to its best finish ever and bringing international acclaim back to Portuguese soccer. It was an unforgettable night for our guests, an unforgettable night for Top Choice Awards and most importantly the start of our international aspirations. Our destiny was clear; we were going to be larger than Canada!

O

nce upon a time Top Choice Awards was a community based company in Toronto but experiences – such as presenting an award to Luiz Felipe Scolari – have changed the company’s outlook for the present and future. We were always a company of “big dreamers” and survived much ridicule to get to where we are now! For every person against us, there were 10 who supported us, so we could have easily kept on working locally and we would be rewarded with continued success. But easy is not a word we use at Top Choice Awards; it is often paired with laziness! So going international with the award was the challenge we were looking for and it was 2007 when we launched our international survey to identify the top choice all over the world. It isn’t easy to go from 0 to 100 with such a unique idea, so we conducted our survey with a unique twist. Everyone knows Tony Tony for his music, but he is humbly known for his charitable contributions, including selfless performances for charity and even contributions out of his own pocket! It was November 2008 when the 3rd International Top Choice Award was about to be presented, we are in Toronto, Canada and it is the night of the 3rd Annual Multicultural Top Choice Awards…a night that will be remembered for a long time! To present an award to a world renowned player of Careca’s stature is a huge responsibility, so we invited international sports analyst Dick Howard to introduce and present the award. “It is with great honour that I present the Lifetime Achievement Award to one of the greats of world futebol… Careca” said Mr. Howard as he introduced the star of the night. The crowd responded with vigor and chants of “Careca!… Careca!…Careca!” soon filled the room. As Careca reached the stage the ladies were screaming and the men stood in respect of his presence. Careca shared stories of his experiences with Maradona, Pele and other soccer icons. He recalled his childhood, when he used to play soccer with rocks because he didn’t have a ball and said that he is clearly blessed by God to come from such a small town in Brazil to international fame. “I hope to motivate others to achieve larger dreams than mine” said Careca. He left us with a lesson of humility and a greater respect for humanity. So again it was possible to achieve what many labeled “impossible”! As we write this our international surveying is going strong and many more Antonio icons will be holding the Mark of Excellence…you can Oliveira count on it!

SOUTHLAND Transportation Ltd. started in 1971 servicing the Calgary Catholic School board with one van. That number grew to 55 buses by 1979 and in 1991 SOUTHLAND moved beyond Calgary and set up an operation in Cochrane to serve the Rocky View School Division with 52 buses. Portugal Day

As I approach the crowd of people I hear the music getting louder, the drums getting stronger, the whistles of happiness and people shouting for joy. This was how my day began at the “Ferma Parade”. Written by: Dyvine Silvestre Photos by: Bradlee Silvestre It was amazing, there were so many different sounds to hear. When the drums came I could feel my heart beat pound faster and louder, it reminded me of the ‘’Noite des Bombos’’ in Mirandela Portugal. It really made me feel like I was in Portugal. Then came tambourines, accordions and guitars, they were all in sync and were backed up by shouts of the people. Did I mention it was amazing?! Not only did the sound capture me but the vivid colours passing by my eyes, dancers, floats, flags, all these brought the parade more life. With every step the dancers took I felt the passion and love they have for their country. When they looked at me, I could see every thing they were feeling. All the floats were spectacular but my favourites were the “Sata Float” and the one with a little boy dressed in traditional Portuguese clothes with a goat beside him, that little kid was truly Portuguese. The Portuguese flag was everywhere, which showed me that everyone was united and they truly loved their country.

Even from far you could smell the fresh bread being made at the bakery. It made me feel like running there and take a bite of that fresh bread. Unfortunately a lot of people felt the same way so the line up was huge - meaning I didn’t get any. It was nice to know that in Canada there is a place to taste a little of Portugal. “When they looked at me, I could see every thing they were feeling.”

When people honked their horns, clapped for joy, or even just jumped up and down, you could feel the ground shake. What a feeling! Portuguese people were not the only ones enjoying the parade...it was nice to see people from other countries celebrate it too, that’s multiculturalism, or in other words - that’s Toronto! It was a great parade from beginning to end - well at least until I left. I enjoyed every second of my day, what a parade!
