MESSAGE FROM THE PUBLISHER Hello everyone, With so much happening world wide, I trust everyone is doing well. I hope we as a human species living on this planet, get more conscious towards humanity and make healthy choices so future generations enjoy a better place to live. One year has passed and so much has changed. As it will continue to change, we must learn how to adapt and allow ourselves to evolve to keep helping each other. The Top Choice Magazine, also known as Top Choices Guide is adapting to what is expected in the new decade of marketing. With more and more consumers searching for online deals and making educated purchases, we had to provide a platform to guide their choices while being aware of our responsibilities towards a safer planet. So, from choosing to print only one issue per year instead of two, to working with lighter paper, using less inc on each page, and encouraging readers to use the online version, our new and improved business guide is doing its part to maintain a trusted bridge between passionate business owners and educated consumers, while contributing to the improvement of the planet. This guide was re-designed with the intention of connecting and inspiring educated consumers to find top notch local businesses. With so many options of services and products available, both locally and online, it’s becoming increasingly overwhelming to make a purchase decision. It’s taking a lot of our quality time, when in reality, shopping or choosing a local trusted service or product should be as calm as enjoying a cup of coffee. If I’ve learned anything from the 23 years of my entrepreneurship career, it’s that financial education will always outlast university degrees, intellect and even sometimes work experience. Being financially educated doesn’t mean having a lot of money, it means making the best investments possible with what you have, considering the time of return on that investment. I mention financial education being a very important factor in the new decade ahead, due to the fact that, many trusted sources of business experts are previewing growth in the economy of North America across many markets which will force leaders in their industries like Top Choi-
ce Award winners to adapt and accept the changes in order to remain in the game. With shifts in economic growth in different markets comes a wave of “overnight” registrations of new companies that are opened by millennials- passionate, well educated and creative people that learn from past jobs and use their experience on the internet to make huge profits while cutting down production costs, making their new company a serious competitor to consider. The upper hand for older businesses lies in business endurance- being many years in the business as a leader in your industry. Redefining our financial education is what we at Top Choice Awards are working towards in the new decade. And that simply shows that businesses ahead of the curve excel, even in times of global economic struggle. 2020 has been off to a challenging start with the outbreak of COVID-19. What has changed for VGC? Obviously, this is a game changer for everyone and as a result we are changing day to day. We are making sure our students are taken care of and safe. We’re training our staff to make sure our programs still have that outstanding quality, and changing our marketing strategies to make sure people at home in their own countries know they can now join in. Because we were able to get our message out quickly, VGC Virtual has become a success. People are seeing how 11
it can enhance the learning experience. It is going so well, that we will extend those courses past our reopening. The greatest challenge has been dealing with uncertainty. Obviously, we had to close our locations down and reassure the students that we will all get through this. And now, making sure their well-being is front and foremost as we reopen.

THE PLAY-CEBO EFFECT: WHY ITS IMPORTANT TO PLAY AS AN ADULT! The weight of responsibility only seems to increase as we age. Somewhere along the line, we get to a point where we don’t have the time to have fun. Nay, we don’t take the time. Between the stresses of work, our daily commute, looking after kids and all the rest, squeezing in a bit of fun for ourselves, it can just become another chore. But ‘play’ as an adult doesn’t have to become tedious. It doesn’t mean building a sandbox, buying some new trucks, or brushing the hair of a 1980’s Barbie. As adults, the importance of play isn’t just to break up our routine. It is how we learn to be or continue to be, creative. It develops our personality, lets us enjoy the little things, releases endorphins and improves neural plasticity. It increases our brain function, helps us to maintain dexterity, and can ultimately just help us to laugh. As kids, these activities are integral to our learning and cognitive development, and an incredible way to build social skills. But
playing is just as important as adults for the same skills. Research has also shown that play increases levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which is essential for the growth and maintenance of brain cells.

COMPANIES WITH MORE THAN ONE SHAREHOLDER NEED SHAREHOLDER AGREEMENTS! Shareholder agreements are contracts between two or more shareholders which govern the relationship between shareholders by defining the rights and obligations of each shareholder regarding the management of the corporation and the transfer of its shares. The following are eight reasons why a company should have a shareholders’ agreement:
1) PREVENTION OF LEGAL DISPUTES
When a business relationship begins, they envision a long-term relationship of cooperation and trust. Unfortunately, disputes are bound to arise which can lead to litigation, that is time-consuming, expensive and harmful to a business. A shareholders’ agreement provides a mechanism and framework for shareholders of a corporation to effectively deal with any disputes that arise between the shareholders without proceeding to court.
2) RESTRICTIONS ON THE TRANSFER OF SHARE
Shareholder agreements can prevent shares from being sold and transferred to individuals that are either unknown or have undesirable qualities for current shareholders. These restrictions allow existing shareholders to participate in new offerings and approve new or replace partners of the business that were never contemplated at beginning of the business relationship. One mechanism that is typically in place to protect the interests of both the selling shareholder and remaining shareholders is a “right of first refusal”. A right of first refusal allows a shareholder to sell their shares to a third party, but only if they first offer the same terms to existing shareholders.
3) RESTRICT THE POWER OF DIRECTORS
Typically, business decisions of the corporation are left to the board of directors. In a shareholders’ agreement, shareholders can limit a director’s discretion. This mechanism provides

shareholders of the corporation with greater control over the day to day operations of the corporation.
4) EXIT STRATEGY FOR SHAREHOLDERS Shareholders may want to exit a corporation for numerous reasons such as retirement, they want to cash out their investment, they simply no longer want to be involved with the corporation or they no longer see eye to eye with the remaining shareholder. A shareholders’ agreement can define the procedure of how a shareholder may exit a corporation. Examples include; a. Shotgun Clause: Allows a shareholder to offer to buy the shares of the other shareholder or to sell their own shares at a specific price. Call Option Clause: The Corporation or shareholder can purchase the shares of a shareholder at any time or after the occurrence of an event.

DEBRA MUDD HAS PASSION, talent and drive – a combination necessary to reach the pinnacle of success. Debra, a dancer, teacher, studio owner and most importantly mentor, has taken the Calgary dance scene to a whole new level. She opened her first studio, Ultimate Dance Company, in Calgary, Alberta in 1996 – this was the beginning of her career and the original foundation of her journey to inspire local dancers. It was in 2014 when Debra decided it was time to add a second location in Calgary. Growing up, Debra always had a passion for dance. Her dance training began when she was four years old and has never stopped, “I started dancing when I was four, all my training evolved, I went to school (post-secondary) for Early Childhood education and wanted to open up a preschool and instead opened a dance studio,” says Mudd. Debra’s education in dance is one that surpasses many, as she is trained in various segments of the art. However, it is ballet where her true forte lies. In addition to attending summer intensives with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet school, Debra has trained in both the Cecchetti and Vaganova methods of ballet and has achieved a number of certifications in ballet, including credentials with the Royal Academy of Dance and British Association of Teachers in Dance. Debra is currently a registered teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance. This nowhere near concludes the list of Debra’s credentials in dance education as she is always pursuing additional training. Presently, Debra also works as a mentor for new teachers, assisting them in gaining their certification with the Royal Academy of Dance.

Due to Debra’s expertise and the increased demand for her studios, there is talk about further expansion. “Yes, definitely, I am always thinking and planning.” Debra’s approach to teaching styles differs in comparison to most. She takes a caring approach and focuses a great deal of her attention on her faculty at the studio. The studio is always up-to-date on the latest in dance training and instruction, and Debra makes sure to offer workshops to the students in all dance styles. Ultimate Dance Company has created an environment that goes beyond just dance training and offers opportunities for faculty and students to build lasting relationships. Ultimate Dance Company includes both competitive and recreational dance programs for families with different types of needs. Debra makes sure to offer a wide range of classes for all ages and abilities so that the studio can cater to what people are looking for. Debra hosts three large yearend recitals, where the students can share everything they’ve learned from the past year with all their loved ones. What grants Debra the upper hand in the industry is her true passion for her career, “I love what I do, every day, all day.” Debra has learned an exceptional amount as a dance studio owner for 22 years. Her challenges are few and the inevitable hardships she encounters are turned into learning experiences. “I think if you continue to stay in touch with training and what’s new in the industry and expose yourself to it, there isn’t really much of a challenge.” Debra’s energy is focused on her students, always ensuring that inspiration and positivity are instilled in their instruction each day. Filomena Murray has a virtue that a lot of business owners have - perseverance. From high school, she went to the European School of Esthetics, working at two different spas to build up her clientele. When Filomena was just 24 years old, the idea of starting her own spa was extremely daunting, but it was better than the feeling she had of not fulfilling her dreams. With a team of all women, under 24 years old, multiple banks did not have high hopes. In fact, they laughed at their ambition.
With family and friends behind her and a fellow esthetician as a business partner, she bravely jumped into the life of an entrepreneur. The spa was built from the ground up. Filomena worked tirelessly, hands on, designing where every room would go, plumbing, electrical and even on the final touches of paint and lighting. It was definitely a labour of love! After nine years in business it certainly wasn’t about the money; in fact, there was none! Filomena was frustrated, having a partner meant she could only 34
control so much, and the spa’s culture, which Filomena valued above all else, was crumbling under the strain of two partners who no longer saw eye-to-eye. If Filomena was to save the faltering spa she would have to do it alone. Since the business debts far outweighed their assets, she was forced to take a big leap of faith and use her own savings to save the spa. Whether this was trying homemade lamb stew on a trip to rural Yemen, sharing a platter of cabbage rolls during the holidays or eating traditional smoked meat in Montreal, the pair were fascinated with the cultures of hospitality and unique foods that could be found around the globe. It is that fascination that sits at the heart of Big Wolf’s as it delivers one of the most unique sandwich experiences in the GTA. The store was founded in 2016 when the couple decided to compare the culinary experiences they had on their honeymoon with their love of classic delicatessen and a health-conscious approach that prioritized fresh food. The result is unmistakably expressed in the menu options. Flavor and range speak to the customer as soon as they gaze on the menu and smell the aroma of different smoked, cured, and roasted meats being prepared in the kitchen. That delicious aroma is one of the many things that has driven the restaurant in its dine-in, takeout, delivery and catering success in such a relatively short period of time. While the smell was enticing
enough, there was only so much our noses could take before our palate needed to confirm it for us. With trademark hospitality and a kind smile to match, Dalal directed us to the Big Wolf’s Reuben sandwich, which was paired with a crunchy dill pickle. We decided to indulge and added a generous helping of crisp cut fries, which were cooked to perfection and topped with a seasoned salt blend. The central dish, figuratively and literally, was the piping hot mound of corned beef that was sliced so thinly it almost melted in our mouths. The corned beef sat snuggly in between two slices of freshly baked then grilled marbled rye bread. After appreciating the genuine swiss cheese oozing out of the sandwich, I couldn’t help but take my first bite. The reuben was part Cotes De Neiges on an August Sunday and part Thanksgiving comfort. Their signature Big Wolf’s Reuben sauce complimented the distinct but not overpowering flavour of the finely shredded sauerkraut. Simply put, if flavour was a language - Big Wolf’s spoke it. After topping off our meal with a cold cream soda, and cherry Pepsi, we could not help but to relax and converse with an off-shift Dalal about her experience in the restaurateur industry, her and her husband’s goal, and what she viewed as being the distinctive characteristic of Big Wolf’s. 48

Pacific Gas and Electric was a lawsuit brought forth by the residents of Hinkley, California. Revisions to Child Custody Laws & How They Affect You
On March 1, 2021, crucial amendments to Canada’s Divorce Act will go into effect. These changes aim to increase the responsiveness of federal laws based on the needs of Canadian families. Canada’s Divorce Act is meant for married couples who are separating and/or would like to get divorced. Later this year, the act (which hasn’t been updated for over 20 years) is going through major reform in 2 key areas.
Promoting the Child’s Best Interests In family law cases, a child’s best interest is always the top priority. The Divorce Act reform will increase promotion of this through a few measures:
1. Criteria The amendment has created a list of factors a court must consider when determining which actions are in a child’s best interests. While the main considerations are a child’s psychological, emotional, and physical well-being, a court should also consider the child’s: • relationship with their parents, grandparents, and other important adults; • heritage and upbringing; and • preference. This criterion helps courts create an ideal arrangement for each family’s needs.
2. Terminology When constructing parenting arrangements, the courts will now use new, child-focused terminology. For example, rather than utilizing terms such as ‘custody’ and ‘access,’ the amendment asks the court to use the term ‘parenting orders’. A parenting order explains each party’s responsibilities to their child as well as the time they will spend with them. The new wording connotes a more neutral tone and places an emphasis on the care of the child rather than on who has most of the custody and visitation time.
3. Increased Awareness of Family Violence Before the creation of these revisions to the Divorce Act, the word violence was not mentioned in the Divorce Act. Violence of this nature can have a detrimental impact on a child’s well-being and is conduct that is: • violent; • threatening; • controlling; and/or • fear-inducing. With these new revisions, a court will need to review and assess the existence and/ or severity of violence in the home and how it could affect the parenting capabilities of each party.
4. Reducing Poverty If parents and children do not get the financial support they need after the parents go through a separation or divorce, the risk of living in poverty increases. The Divorce Act tackles this issue by: • Providing an increase in devices to help enforce child support. For example, in certain situations, the Canadian government may release tax information to help with child support arrangements.

• Decrease the need for excessive court costs. Going to court over family law-related issues can be expensive. Measures in these revisions aim to decrease the need for families to appear in court by making the system more efficient and accessible.
• Lawyers and other legal advisers must now encourage clients to utilize family dispute resolution processes to resolve family law issues.

5. Terminology New measures have been established to ease the departmental process of family justice and provide access to more people. These measures include: • Local child support administrative services can perform certain tasks usually reserved for the court, to decrease expenses when determining child support awards. • Rather than maintaining a fixed child support schedule, local recalculation services are now permitted to expedite the process. • If both parties live in separate provinces and are seeking to establish a support order, they only need to complete this process in one province rather than both provinces.

The closures were extended for the year and thankfully our aggressive preparation plan worked out and streamlined an uninterrupted remote learning for our students. HERE WE GO: The building has closed but SCHOOL is open. On March 23rd, we launched our synchronous platform and began teaching from our homes. Our commitment to learning was to create a sense of normalcy for our students. As the building closed, we realized that education has little to do with bricks and mortar. In five-ten-fifteen years from now, the building will be long forgotten, but the memories created will last a lifetime. 1. Cleansing Washing your face is the most basic and essential step of any good skin-care routine. The Top Choice Awards makes its mark every year, the extravagance and the networks it brings together is truly amazing, and this year was no different. With so much making our own backyards appear foreign, it was a breath of fresh air to celebrate the 15th Annual Top Choice Awards. The whole event was a glimpse of familiarity and the pick-me-up we all needed right now. With the winners being connected with all their supporters, this year’s awards
event, although online, was the most successful yet. This is without a doubt an era of change and Top Choice is doing just that. It’s ironic, with so much hardship overpowering small businesses currently, Top choice has used this year’s show to amplify the growth and existence of these businesses on a grand scale. The Top Choice Awards strive to highlight the best of the best across so many local communities and ensure those deserving receive recognition for their exceptional work. The 15th annual Top Choice Awards connected businesses to their community in a form of a celebration. It was exceptional to see the influence outpoured through the energy of all the amazing viewers. Appreciation and gratitude go a long way, and allowing these small businesses to receive this in such a strong way 78
during the awards was a huge mark in society. We are growing together, as one, supporting each other and standing with such a strong presence, great change is making its way and it starts with Top Choice. It really was incredible to see the amount of support spread across such a large group of people. This year’s Top Choice Awards was a form of action and great representation of togetherness setting a platform for our future. As positivity and community togetherness spread across the screens of so many, the
show also had an array of entertainment, a cherry on top. There were featured performances by JessGo and her team, Dr. Draw, Edwin the illusionist and Tropicana Queens. Viewers were introduced to so many phenomenal talents, it was hard not to share the experience across family and friends. What should I know before discussing divorce or separation from my partner? Custody and Access
If you are thinking of separating from your partner, you probably have lots of questions running through your mind about your rights, responsibilities, and the ramifications of your decision to separate. You may be wondering, where do I start?
•What parenting arrangement is in the children’s best interest? •Is one or both parents better able to care for the children daily? If not, which parent is better suited for the role? •What kind of access arrangement works better for the children? •Remember the Maximum Contact Principle and balance it against what is in the best interest of the child(ren) •How would major decisions regarding the children be made? •How would we share information about the children?
Here are 4-steps to help make this just a little simpler for you.
Step 1: What do YOU want? Not what’s fair, not what does the other person want, but what do you want.Clarity of your intentions is a very important first step!

•Remember – 50-50 doesn’t mean no child support. •There might be a set off amount payable •Special and Extraordinary expenses are paid over and above regular child support payments and are shared proportionate to your incomes
Why do you want it? With steps 1 and 2 clear, you have a starting base. You will think of others, especially the children but your WHAT and WHY gives you and your lawyer a base from which to start resolving the issues that may arise from the separation.
Step 3:
Spousal Support
Put your mind to some broad substantive areas and your rights and responsibilities in these areas. Such as:
•Is there entitlement? Remember, this is a threshold question. You must first be entitled to spousal support before discussions relating to amount or duration. •Child support takes priority over spousal support payments so while you might be entitled to spousal support, the payor may not have the ability to pay.

•Remember the Limitation Periods – 6 years from the date of separation or 2 years from the date of divorce •Property regime differs for common law vs. Married spouses
Step 4: What dispute resolution mechanism do you wish to use in resolving any areas of dispute? • Negotiation (with or without counsel) • Collaborative Family Law • Mediation (with or without counsel) • Arbitration (or Mediation – Arbitration combination) • Litigation Or a combination of all the above. Quite simply, optimizing and maintaining your immune system is essential for both the quantity and quality of your life. For many people, however, achieving this requires one critical factor: changing the way we think.
“Optimizing” vs “Boosting” Your Immune System - Is there a Magical Cure? There are 3 facts that you need to accept that are strongly rooted in good science: 1. You want to optimize your immune system, not necessarily “boost” it. What’s the difference? Some people
actually have an overactive immune system which can also be harmful to your health whereas everyone will benefit from an immune system functioning at an optimal level. 2. You can improve your immune system through many lifestyle modifications and especially nutrition including specific supplementation. The rare doctor on the internet who states otherwise likely has little to no training in the science of vitamin supplementation. Is there a magical cure for any one disease or virus? Of course not, neither in the natural health care system nor in modern medicine. As such, a comprehensive overall approach is necessary. 3. Yes – you do need to supplement (which means in addition to good nutrition) regardless of your beliefs.
Vitamins & Your Immune System The first step is always a good quality, comprehensive multivitamin as vitamins work hand in hand and in some cases can actually regenerate one another. The good science, outlined in detail in my book, suggests the following action steps for the immune system: 1. Probiotics – The science behind the role that your gut plays in both the immune system and overall health is undeniable. As such, everyone should consider daily probiotics, 2. Vitamin D – Health Canada limits my recommendation to 1000iu daily. Let’s just say I wish they would change their limit. The best way – take a simple blood test to determine your level. 3. Vitamin C – A minimum of 1000mg, preferably in an ascorbate form. 4. Vitamin B6 – B vitamins are necessary to drive the Kreb’s cycle, the main way in which your body produces energy. 5. Vitamin E – Also essential for immune function. 6. Glutathione – The “master an92
ti-oxidant” produced in the liver and essential for immune function. Of particular note is to understand that the #1 cause of acute liver failure is the consumption of acetaminophen – the main ingredient in Tylenol which is commonly prescribed by medical doctors to reduce fever. This same acetaminophen actually robs the body of glutathione. 7. Zinc - Zinc is anti-viral and involved in more reactions in the body than most other minerals.
