TOBAGO ELECTIONS but advises Rowley to dissolve THA first TRINIDAD (TG) -- Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says she will not betray the trust of the people who elected her into office by calling an early election like her predecessor Patrick Manning. Addressing supporters during a pre-budget meeting at her Phillipine home Sunday night, Persad-Bissessar said the only election that will be called will be the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) elections which is constitutionally due. “You gave us a mandate; we will continue to carry out that mandate. Someone said that they calling for early elections. I agree with Rowley, call the elections now, call the THA elections now,” Persad-Bissessar thundered as supporters cheered. “THA election is the only election that is due and we will not sacrifice the votes, the trust and the mandate of T&T to do the thing that Manning did twice, which was to call early elections,” she added. She said the Opposition Leader was Tobagoborn so as soon as the THA is dissolved, she will name a date for the Tobago election. “We will be rising to the top with the Tobago Organisation of the People because for the first time the people of Tobago are given due respect, side by side with Trinidadians,” she said. The Prime Minister also announced that party loyalists will be heading to MidCentre mall in Chaguanas on Saturday for a pre-budget rally. The event will begin at 2 pm. Persad-Bissessar called on her party troops to stand strong and work for the collective good. Saying people should not mistake her smile for weakness, Persad-Bissessar vowed to re-

I smile because I am a happy person and I live in the house of the Lord.” Persad-Bissessar said even if her Government made a “misstep” they should always be held accountable.

“We are founded on the basis of principles... We came to the electorate in 2010, with new hope, new vision and new mission to improve the quality of life for all the people in T&T. “We have demonstrated as a team that even if we have a misstep, the collective good is greater than the individual good because at the end of the day, it is not about one of us, it is about all of us.” National Security Minister Jack Warner, who also addressed the supporters, said more than 14,000 people must gather at Mid-Centre Mall on Saturday. He said if the numbers were less, the people would have failed the Prime Minister.

The two collection units mysteriously disappeared from Port Bustamante some time in October 2011, after they were officially released to the NSWMA by the Customs Department. “The trucks never made it through the gates of the NSWMA,” one official of the garbage disposal agency told the Jamaica Observer. “They seemed to have disappeared somewhere from the wharf on the way to us,” the official said. Originally, three trucks were imported pri-

vately, but customs officials found drugs and guns hidden in them, which led to their seizure and subsequent auction. A source said that one of the trucks which fitted the description was spotted in a yard around 10 o’clock one night in the Half-WayTree area two months ago, but when NSWMA and police officials arrived there around 4 o’clock the following morning for a planned raid, the truck had vanished. It could not be determined which individual or organisation originally imported the vehicles. Investigations by the Sunday Observer revealed that three Seddon Atkinson trucks were shipped from England some time in August 2011 and arrived later that month.

Mother, two young sons found murdered at their Anna Catherina home GUYANA (GC) -- A 41-year-old mother and her two sons–aged six and 15 months were found murdered on Saturday evening at their Anna Catherina home on West Coast Demerara. Deadare Jennifer Persaud, a mother of Afridi, 6, and Jadon, 15 months. The news of the gruesome murders rocked the usually quiet countryside village causing eruptions of weeping and wailing Their bodies were discovered with throats slit in her bed, shortly before 19:00 hours. Relatives said the house was ransacked, , but throughout the ordeal, no one claimed to have heard any strange sounds. It was only after her parents who live at Friendship, East Bank Demerara tried repeatedly to contact her on Saturday and failed, that suspicions were aroused. While the motive for the killing is not yet known, relatives claim a bag containing clothes for the 15-month old was found in the

Neighbours claimed the woman locked up her beer garden and pools shop around midnight on Friday and retired to bed. However, throughout the day, both businesses – the beer garden and grocery shop remained closed and no one from the home was seen moving around. Neighbours said they thought she had gone to visit her parents on the East Bank Demerara. This has now given rise to suspicions that the three might have been killed sometime after midnight when neighbours were asleep. room. Leonora Police soon after detained the dead woman’s 26-year-old reputed husband, who is a deportee with the only name given as ‘Lenny’ and is in custody. The two have had a stormy relationship for the last three years, relatives said, during which time she mothered his son Jadron. Jennifer also called Jenny, lived with Lenny

Rowley praises media for protecting citizens TRINIDAD (TG) -- Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley said the role of mass media in protecting citizens can never be overemphasised. During his Republic Day address Sunday, Rowley said: “Especially at a time like this the nation owes a deep debt of gratitude to those vigilant professionals who work in the mass media. These are the men and women who legitimise the doctrine that the price of freedom is eternal vigilance. “The role of the mass media in protecting us citizens from the excesses and indiscretions of unworthy leaders is not to be undervalued...We express deep appreciation to our journalists for their stick-to-itiveness and dedication to duty, particularly in the dogged protection of our democracy.” Rowley said in support of their efforts, citizens must not fail to come to terms with the fact that the key to eternal vigilance is a well- informed, enlightened and educated society and it was therefore incumbent upon all of us to maintain an open mind and a watchful eye in being so

endowed. “On this, the occasion of the 36th anniversary of the attainment of Republic status of our beloved nation, I will be less than honest if I attempt to conceal the fact that it is with a spirit of deep concern on the one hand but with abundant faith on the other, that I welcome this opportunity to address a few remarks to all my fellow citizens, at home and abroad,” he said. Rowley said in critical times like these basic principles were being swept aside, treasured values are being eroded and leaders lose respect and regard for the noblest traditions of civilised society. Rowley said the underlying

“To add to the imposition, our leaders, rather than humble themselves and magnanimously honour their sacred oath to promote and defend the public interest, hasten uncaringly to exercise the preference of championing the evils of misbehavior in and out of public office to a degree which defies wisdom, decorum, decency and understanding,” he said. Rowley said it was time to take stock and contemplate the well-being of our country. “While therefore I delight in wishing all my fellow citizens a happy and restful Republic Day, I call upon you to join with me in using the occasion to take stock of the developments which are engulfing and embattling us and seek to contemplate and clarify in our own minds the destiny which we all so fervently wish to set for the welfare and well- being of our beloved homeland,” he said.

COP MP suggested early election at Cabinet meeting TRINIDAD (TG) -- The possibility of returning to the polls and having a fresh general election as a result of the Clause 34 issue was presented by a frontline People’s Partnership minister at last Thursday’s Cabinet meeting after it was revealed that the Prime Minister had fired Justice Minister Herbert Volney. The issue was raised by a senior COP member, PP officials confirmed. They said the possibility arose in the context of discussing alternatives available to the Government following Volney’s dismissal and other alternatives suggested included finding ways to strengthen the Partnership and restoring public trust. They said the idea of returning to the polls was immediately rejected by all Cabinet members. COP MPs, along with those of other coalition parties, their leaders and members of their respective executives were invited to a meeting yesterday at the Phillipine home of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. A PP spokesman said the meeting, arranged last week, was to

address the 2013 budget being presented on October 1. Senior PP ministers said members were notified of it after Volney was fired last Thursday. Foreign Affairs Minister and former COP leader Winston Dookeran, a frontline MP and former finance minister, missed the meeting. A family spokesman said yesterday that Dookeran left T&T last Saturday to attend the United Nations General Assembly in the US. After the PNM’s march on the Clause 34 issue, a concerned Dookeran had said he was assessing the entire political spectrum, including the Section 34 matter. Also absent from the PM’s caucus was COP leader Prakash Ramadhar, now acting as Justice Minister until minister-designate Christlyn Moore is sworn in this week. COP was only represented by MPs Carolyn SeepersadBachan and Rodger Samuel, deputy leader Anna Maria Mora and Port-of-Spain representative, Rudy Hananji.

Ramadhar was also among COP officials at last Saturday’s meeting of COP North-West members who voiced a mixed view on whether the COP should stay with the Partnership at Flagship House, Woodbrook. COP MPs said budget meetings for the Cabinet were normal, but yesterday was the first time the executives of the coalition partners were invited. Of the 46 present, more than half opted to stay in the Government and others said they wanted out of the PP, COP officials confirmed. Some vehemently warned the Opposition PNM could enter government if COP left the Partnership and it disintegrated. COP chairman Joseph Toney told the T&T Guardian yesterday: “No vote was taken.” Attendees included MP Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan, executive members Lincoln Douglas, Clyde Weatherhead, Anna Maria Mora and former senator Nicole Dyer-Griffith. The meeting was the first by COP branches to gauge views on issues including staying in the PP.

No end to garbage collection crisis JAMAICA (JO) -- Only 11 of the National Solid Waste Management Agency’s (NSWMA) 62 garbage trucks that serve the Kingston Metropolitan region are roadworthy.

its fleet of service vehicles, mainly Suzuki Vitara and Jimny sport utility vehicles, languishing in garages across Kingston in need of repair.

At the garage along Hagley Park Road, 26 garbage collection units are all awaiting parts, which, a month ago, were estimated to cost $67 million, not including tyres and batteries, which most of them need.

Officials of the company said that some of them had not been serviced for over three years and had developed major mechanical and electrical problems.

The NSWMA has been forced to hire more than 60 private trucks to help in the collection of garbage in the Kingston Metropolitan Region, which includes the Jamaican capital, St Catherine and St Thomas. The NSWMA moves over 53 tonnes of garbage from the densely populated Kingston Metropolitan Region each month, far more than any other section of the island. Garbage disposal for Montego Bay and the wider St James, amounts to an average of 16 tonnes monthly, according to NSWMA figures, while it is far less in towns like Ocho Rios and Mandeville which moves six tonnes each monthly. Those regions, too, are under pressure with limited garbage trucks, as only a half of Montego Bay’s 17 units are in operation. Mandeville and Ocho Rios have 12 units each. “We are under immense pressure in moving garbage across the island, because we do not have the trucks to do that,” said an NSWMA

employee, who declined to be identified as he said that he was not authorised to speak on behalf of the agency. “When you consider that the NSWMA’s budget suffered a massive cut this fiscal year, and we were strapped for cash before, you know that we are in trouble,” the employee said. The NSWMA makes nothing from the collection of household garbage, as such an activity is pegged directly to the payment of property taxes by homeowners, which partfund the operations of the agency. However, there are huge sums to be made from moving commercial garbage from business places; including supermarkets, large restaurants, entertainment facilities, among others. The shortage of units has rendered the agency useless in pushing its neck out as it gets only a small percentage of the business of collecting commercial waste, which officials say only assists in paying some of its “house-

hold bills”. “If we are able to get our fleet back to where they were five or six years ago, we would go a far way in being self-sufficient, because we could make money off commercial garbage disposal,” the official said. The agency is often the target of public rancour from residents of the Corporate Area in particular, where complaints about uncollected garbage flow fast and furious. Apart from the Seddon Atkinson-make vehicles, the agency has in its fleet units made by Renault of France, Hyundai of Korea and American-made Isuzu. The NSWMA, too, has a high percentage of

Scandal-laced news is not foreign to the NSWMA. Last June, police arrested and charged former Special Projects Manager Mark Rodney after the 34-year-old Linstead, St Catherine, native was accused of defrauding the agency of several million dollars. Rodney, a former member of the Jamaica Labour Party-affiliate youth organisation, Young Jamaica, was fired in January after the new political Administration took office and conducted a forensic audit into the operations of the organisation. Rodney, who was accused of breaching the Corruption Prevention and Proceeds of Crime Acts, for allegedly awarding contracts to a company that he operated, thus bypassing the tendering process, is out on $10-million bail.

Garbage units never made it from wharf Continued From Page 2 -- The three were described as “brand new, second-hand” units, which were brought in to truck commercial garbage by the importer. After the action was taken by the Customs Department to auction the vehicles, two units from the batch left the port mysteriously. “It was as if they walked out of Port Bustamante and no one saw anything,” the NSWMA official said. It was at that point that the agency moved swiftly to secure the last remaining unit, which could not be driven from Port Bustamante, and needed to be towed by wrecker to the NSWMA’s garage located at 97 Hagley Park Road in Kingston. That vehicle had been stripped of some of its vital electrical parts and remains at the facility awaiting money to effect repairs. “None of the trucks found their way to the NSWMA,” the organisation’s Executive Director Jennifer Edwards confirmed in an interview with the Sunday Observer. “The NSWMA has not been able to verify that they were secured,” said Edwards, who took over as head of the waste disposal agency in January, replacing Joan GordonWebley, who quit last November to represent the Jamaica Labour Party in the December 29 General Election. Gordon- Webley lost to the People’s National Party’s Damion Crawford in her bid to take the East Rural St Andrew seat that she won in 1980. “When I came to the NSWMA I heard the rumours about the missing trucks and I started to investigate internally, but I have not found any documentation. I am seeking to have another look from another direction, but I have heard the story about the missing trucks. “There is no official paper trail of the transaction, but it is possible that they were burnt in the fire or were removed. It’s a hard place

to track what happened before,” Edwards said. She was referring to a mysterious fire that gutted a section of the NSWMA’s Half-WayTree Road headquarters last January. Agency officials suspect that vital information was deliberately destroyed following official confirmation by police that arson was the cause of the blaze. But those who have been long in the system swear that they know about the transaction, which was communicated to staff last year. The garbage truck that made it to the NSWMA’s fleet, with Government registration plate 30 4096, was undergoing repairs when the Sunday Observer made enquiries about its readiness. Officials at the NSWMA said that it took almost a year to get the necessary road documents for it, which were acquired mere weeks ago. Contacted by the Sunday Observer, GordonWebley rubbished the suggestions that the trucks disappeared under her watch, and went further to declare that the NSWMA could never have participated in any auction as the entity had always been cash strapped. The former NSWMA boss said she had been hearing the rumours, but discounted them as cheap politics. Gordon Webley explained that during her tenure at the solid waste management agency, she only once received a garbage truck from the fleet of unserviceable or seized vehicles on the wharf. “In order to obtain that vehicle, I had to ask the finance minister, who then instructed me to write a letter to the ministry. Following that, the vehicle was released, and as far as I know, remains at the solid waste agency,” Gordon-Webley insisted.

Anna Catherina mother and sons murdered Continued From Page 3 -- She further explained that they did not only have a problem with his age, but they were also aware of him being abusive towards their mother. Persaud’s sister, Pauline revealed that on several occasions the woman would put him out of her home when they had disagreements but he would go away for a while and then return. The daughter, Angela said that on Saturday night after Lenny was informed of the death of his wife, child and step child, he came by and looked at the bodies but showed no emotion. “When he come, no cry on he face, no facial nothing…no nothing, no cry… He just say he ain’t know nothing,” said the distraught young woman. She said that his lack of emotion made him seem guilty and he was subsequently detained by police. In addition, two bags containing items belonging to Jadon were discovered at the scene which made it seem like someone had planned or contemplated taking the baby somewhere. At the time this newspaper visited the home yesterday morning, police detectives were on the scene carrying out investigations. Although relatives said that the murder weapon was not yet discovered, they said they are pleased with the work the police are doing so far. The dead woman’s distraught mother, ‘Junka’ and her husband Kumar Persaud also called ‘Fally’ recalled that on Saturday morning they sent another grandson to collect plucked chicken from Jenny. However, when he reached there the place was locked up and he called out and got no reply. After a long wait the child returned home. Jenny’s parents followed up with several unsuccessful phone calls. By the end of the day, Junka said, they became very worried and thought that something was amiss and as such, visited the home at Anna Catherina. When the elderly couple arrived at their daughter’s home, it was already beginning to get dark and it was still tightly shut up. Her father Kumar and his grandson climbed and forced their way through a window, into the house, but got the shock of their lives with a gruesome discovery. The three blood soaked bodies were lying on her bed with their throats slit. Little Jadon was lying atop of her and his elder brother, Afridi alongside her.

Startled, Kumar rushed back out of the house and broke the disturbing news. The police were called in and began investigations. As villagers stormed the house, offering their condolences, Jennifer’s reputed husband was said to have ventured nearby and was accosted by police. He , however, claimed he knew nothing about the murders, and had been playing in a ball game at Tuschen when he heard the news and decided to come by. Meanwhile, a huge crowd of neighbours – shocked beyond words, gathered outside the home of the tragedy as police continued their investigations inside. The dead woman’s four daughters live elsewhere - the younger two with their father’s relatives and the elder two on their own, one being married. The elder two who got the message late and had to travel a far distance to reach Anna Catherina, arrived on the scene of the murder after midnight, and, shocked beyond words, forced their way through the crowd, entering the home where their mother and brothers lay. Tears were immediately brought to the eyes of the crowd when the e eldest daughter, walked up, and looking dazed asked: “Whey mommy?” She was quickly helped into the house by relatives and neighbours who defied police orders for everyone to ‘keep back.’ They were allowed to view the dead and broke down in tears. Those who knew about Jenny’s life recalled that she had endured a very stormy relationship with her paramour whom they described as very violent. Relatives said Jenny’s reputed husband beat her regularly and only a few days before her death had beat her so badly, she was forced to report the matter to the Leonora police. Feeling that she had endured too much at his hands, Jenny threatened that she wanted him out of her life, relatives said and perhaps that was too much for him. One concerned elderly relative added: “Every second they ah fight, now look … they done fuh good.” Meanwhile, her former husband who has custody of the two younger girls, recalled that only recently Jenny had begged him to send the two girls back home to live with her, but the children had not quite made up their minds. Relatives and neighbours described the now dead woman as someone who was ambitious, industrious and worked hard to achieve what she acquired in life. She established and ran her business for about 9 years, they said, adding: “But now she would not live to enjoy it.”

A yogic diet

moods, and increases the vital flow of prana (energy) in the body.

Geeta Maraj Contributor The word ‘diet’ in Western society tends to refer generally to calorie counting, in order to lose weight. However, the original meaning of the word diet is in reference to the general intake of food on a daily basis. Diet, refers to the foods eaten in order to supply the body with energy to function properly, and to repair body tissues. Since the two main necessities of life are the food we eat and the air we breathe, proper balance and maintenance of these two aspects are critical to our well-being. In yoga, food and breath are directly linked to the status of our mind, body and ultimately our spiritual advancement. If we are to compare the importance of diet to the body, we will find it is almost identical to the importance of breath to the body. With reference to the latter, there are at least 8 main breathing exercises, with kapalabhati being one of the most important. This is a rapid form of breathing which serves to strengthen the lungs and massage the heart and internal organs. Equally, this breath helps to focus the mind, determines our

When it comes to the importance of a proper diet (healthy food choices) we can observe the same benefits to the body as the breath. Diet, determines ones’ state of being, whether a relaxed or anxious personality. For this reason, animal trainers use certain diets to influence a particular behavior in animals. What we eat, predicts the physical and emotional health and well being of our body. A healthy diet also creates a clearer, smoother pathway for the flow of prana in the body. It is a generally known that many people die from diseases, such as, cardiac problems, hypertension, stroke, cancer, and kidney failure. The fact that all of these ailments are directly related to the food consumed, lends weight to the necessity for a pure, wholesome diet (sattvic). Nature speaks to us of the poisons we consume, or to which we are exposed, by sending messages through symptoms and illnesses to the body. In yoga there are three states or gunas, which describe the primary qualities of nature. The purest of the gunas is called sattva, accounting for clarity of the mind and intellect. The second guna, rajas, relates to tense, impul-

sive, active energy. The final guna, which brings about qualities of darkness and lethargy, is tamas. These three states exist in all things and all actions, with one at all times being more dominant than the other two. The key to achieving purity and cleanliness of the body, the mind and intellect, is a sattvic control of all aspects of our existence (breath, diet, thought, action and deed). Sattvic Foods are of the freshest, purest, most natural forms. They are known as the true yogic foods. They are mainly beneficial in that they nourish and cleanse the body of toxins, keep the mind calm and tranquil, and provide a clear, smooth flow of prana. Eating slowly is considered a sattvic quality. The traditional recommendation for healthy eating is to fill half of the stomach with food, one quarter with water, leaving the last quarter empty. Examples of Sattvic Foods are: fresh fruits and vegetables (the brighter the color, the richer in nutrients); whole grains, beans, legumes, nuts and seeds. Milk and milk products such as, butter and cheese; natural sugars, such as honey; herbal teas; and pure water Rajasic Foods are those that are generally

pungent, hot, spicy, bitter, sour, and salty. These foods disturb the mind and body equilibrium causing an over stimulation of the senses and passions, resulting in restlessness, excitability and uncontrolled thoughts. Hurried eating habits are considered rajasic. Examples of Rajasic Foods are hot peppers, hot spices, strong herbs; caffeinated products (including coffee, tea and chocolate); meats, fish, eggs; salty products and sour products. Tamasic Foods are the converse of Sattvic foods, in that, they are impure, rotted, spoiled or stale. These foods have no benefit to the mind or the body and restrict the flow of prana. They enhance lethargy, dark emotions (anger, hate, lust, jealousy and covetousness), cloud reasoning and decrease the body’s resistance to diseases. Overeating is considered a tamasic quality. Examples of Tamasic Foods are processed meats; alcohol; tobacco; onion and garlic; fermented foods (beer, vinegar); frozen, canned or boxed foods; chemically processed foods; stale, rotted, limp vegetables or fruits; reheated or burnt foods. Hence, when focusing on our health from a yogic perspective, we are able to determine our mental and physical experience, based on how we breathe and what we eat. Since there is a direct relation to our health, based on our food and breath, we are therefore able to personally control the status of our mind and body

Rain hurts WI in 17-run defeat Despite brisk half-centuries by Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels which helped spur West Indies to a seemingly challenging 191 for eight off 20 overs, an aggressive Australia response and rain resulted in a 17-run defeat on the Duckworth/Lewis method for Darren Sammy’s team in their first match of the ICC World T20 tournament in Sri Lanka yesterday. When the rain swept across the Premadasa Stadium, Australia were 100 for one off 9.1 overs with Shane Watson, who made 41 not out and Mike Hussey, unbeaten on 28, leading an exciting run chase. Left-hander David Warner had set the stage with a swashbuckling 28 off 14 balls including three fours and two sixes—22 runs coming off only the second over from fast bowler Ravi Rampaul. The result propelled the Australians into the Super Eights as winners of Group B and left West Indies needing to beat Ireland tomorrow to advance as well, although a nodecision would also be in their favour on a superior net run rate. It was a pity the rain intervened and prevented the match from going the distance as Australia were chasing what would have been the fifth-highest successful run chase in T20 international history. “I think rain played its part, otherwise it would have been a cracker of a game. The build-up was very exciting and I think both teams did deliver, but it was unfortunate that rain came when it did. We thought we were still in it. They still needed nine an over and they had to keep going. It’s unfortunate that weather played a part but that’s something we have to get over. We are now looking

forward to the next game against Ireland,” Sammy said. After winning the toss, West Indies suffered an early setback when Dwayne Smith was bowled for two by an inswinger, which hit the top of the stumps from left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc with the score eight in the second over. Gayle and Johnson Charles then took the score to 47 in the sixth over before Charles played on off the gloves to fast-medium Daniel Christian for 16 off 12 balls as he tried to run the ball down to third man. It let in Samuels and showing a good understanding with fellow Jamaican Gayle, the pair lifted the tempo in fine style. Gayle, dropped on four at third man by Watson off Starc, topscored with 54 off 33 balls including five fours and four sixes, while Samuels emerged from a quiet start to clobber 50 off 33 balls, which contained three fours and four sixes. Left-hander Gayle hit 41-year-old left-arm spinner Bradd Hogg for six over long-on in the fifth ball of the seventh over to move to 35 off 21 balls with four fours and two sixes and greeted off-spinner Glenn Maxwell with another six over long-on and a pull over midwicket for six as well, which carried 95 metres. Player-of-the-Match Watson atoned for his early miss when he had Gayle caught and bowled off the leading edge, having added 46 in 4.5 overs with Samuels. Samuels and

Dwayne Bravo (27 off 21 balls) then sustained the tempo, putting on 47 in 5.2 overs for the fourth wicket before Samuels was caught at long-on by Warner off Hogg. Starc was the leading wicket-taker with three for 35 while Watson picked up two for 29—both off four overs. Warner batted in his usual attacking style and seemed baffled when he was given out caught at the wicket by Denesh Ramdin off pacer Fidel Edwards as he essayed a drive off the first ball of the third over with the score 30. But Watson’s 24-ball knock inclusive of three fours and two sixes and Hussey, who faced 19 balls while striking three fours and one six, ensured Australia were ahead when the rain came. The onslaught was underlined when off-spinner Samuels was struck for 22 in the eighth over including two consecutive sixes – the second a flat pull which went through the hands of Smith just inside the midwicket boundary. As soon as Rampaul was brought back for a second spell, it started to rain cats and dogs and West Indies knew that their wayward bowling had undone them in the face of the D/L method. Caribbean Pot: Jerk Pork Sliders

Chris De La Rosa Contributor Ingredients 1/2 scotch bonnet (seeded and chopped) 1 scallion 2 sprigs thyme 1 clove garlic 1 teaspoon allspice 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 1 teaspoon brown sugar 1 tablespoon white vinegar 1 tablespoon lime juice 1 teaspoon soy sauce 1 lb ground pork 1 tablespoon orange juice 1/4 teaspoon grated ginger Notes: You can use a habanero pepper if you can’t source scotch bonnet peppers or your fav hot pepper (if all fails use some hot sauce for the kick). You can also use ground chicken, beef or turkey if you don’t dine with the swine. You’ll need a food processor or blender (or chop as fine as you can), but first give the

scallion, scotch bonnet pepper and the thyme a rough chop. Then add all your ingredients (except the ground pork) into the blender and work it until you have a smooth consistency. If the stalk of the thyme is not tender, remember to remove the little leaves off the woody stalk and discard. If you blend any woody stalk it will not break down all the way and you can have a potential choking hazard. Place the ground pork in a deep bowl and pour the marinade over it. Using your hands (or spoon) work everything until it’s well incorporated. Here’s a trick to help shape the jerk pork sliders to fit evenly on your bun. Place a sheet of cling wrap on a flat surface, then make a log with the now seasoned meat on the wrap. Try to shape it about 1/4 inch bigger (circumference) than the size of your bun as it will shrink as it grills. Now roll and shape as you do with the cling wrap until you have a sort of thick sausage. Seal the ends and place in the freezer to set. It may take a couple hours. In the meantime I prepared a Caribbean salsa to top my jerk pork sliders. Basically avocado, tomato, mango, cilantro, sea salt, black pepper, red onion and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil (add a little organic honey if you have as well). After the roll is firm, slice it with a sharp knife into the thickness you want (wet your knife for easier slicing). All you have to do

now is grill on a hot grill as you would normally grill burgers. Since this is pork I like grilling slow, but until it’s fully cooked all the way through.I’m sure you can cook these in a frying pan on the stove top as well. In my haste to get my dinner on, I totally forgot to toast the buns for that extra “bang”. But all you have to do now is place one of these jerk pork patties on your toasted bun, top with that beautiful Caribbean salsa and enjoy! There’s no need for any other condiments as the salsa will have that rich creaminess from the ripe avocado and the pieces of ripe mango will explode in your mouth with

every bite. These jerk pork sliders will be an absolute hit at your next BBQ as people as drawn to sliders in general, but with the unique punch of the jerk marinade we infused the ground meat with before grilling, will have friends and family begging you for the recipe. Remember when using the scotch bonnet pepper to wear gloves, wash your hands immediately after with soap and don’t include any seeds if you’re concerned about raw heat.

How exercise can help recovering Cancer patients

Getting the best body of your life mistakes and may have to repeat a few steps. If anything, pushing yourself too hard and going too fast will cause you to break down from injury. Be patient and enjoy every step along your journey.

energy levels. manage stress, anxiety, low mood or depression.

Trish Browning Contributor A recent study by the Mayo Clinic feels that patients that are recovering from Cancer treatment can benefit from mild exercise. In the past patients were encouraged take it easy, not to engage in activities and get lots of rest. Professor Robert Thomas explains that physical activities help the patient in a number of ways. It reduces the side effects in patients, making them feel better. It could help reduce the chance of relapse and improves your chance to live an overall healthy life. He explains that a common side effect of chemotherapy is fatigue which leads to a decrease in mood, anxiety, and ultimate depression. Regular exercise has shown an increase in physical well-being and improves mood. It helps to reduce fatigue and improve your

Exercise can improve heart health (some chemotherapy drugs and radiotherapy can cause heart problems later in life), build muscle strength, relieve pain and improve range of movement. I can help you sleep better, improve your appetite and helps to maintain a healthy weight. Previous research has shown that breast and colon cancer patients who exercise regularly have half the recurrence rate than non-exercisers. So during treatment the trick to is to avoid inactivity. Try to incorporate some mild exercise. For example: take the stairs for 1 flight instead of the elevator, walk for short periods of time. When treatment is completed try to increase the intensity and aim for two to two and a half hour of exercise per week. Try to find activities that you enjoy for the long term like join the gym or a dance class. Depending on what treatment was taken there will be areas that should be avoided. Discuss this with your oncologist for advice on how far you should go. Exercise is safe and now proven to help patients.

Malnutrition Dr. Matthew S Weekes BSC DDS MTh DMin

Contributor It is important to pay attention to good nutrition early in life. This is especially true for mothers since the development of teeth starts in the womb. Good nutrition is essential for development of teeth as early as 6 weeks in the fetal stage. Therefore during pregnancy mothers should be aware that they have the important responsibility of maximizing the good dental and general health of their children. A mother’s diet should provide the building blocks for healthy teeth in a healthy oral environment. Diet should include adequate amounts of calcium, phosphorus, vitamin C and vitamin D.

Basically the foods that are beneficial for your body are also good for your teeth. The foods that may cause most damage are high is sugar, starch and acids. Sugar and starchy foods sustain the growth of bacteria, which produce products that demineralize the teeth and can cause inflammation leading to infections in the teeth, bone and gums. Acids, which are found in citrus foods, also decalcify teeth and commonly cause cavities. The important factor to remember is the length of time residual amounts of these foods remain in the mouth. The longer the time, the more damaging the effects. A well balanced diet should include Vitamin C for good oral health, Vitamin D for preventing bone loss and maintaining general health. When choosing your meals and snacks, it is advisable to drink plenty of water, select foods from whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean source of protein as lean beef, skinless poultry, fish, peas, legumes, low fat or fat free dairy products.

When you rush, you often make terrible mistakes that set you back even further and it takes you longer to overcome these obstacles both physically and mentally. Understand that you are likely to make

Make an effort every day in your weight loss journey to do something. Some days, you will make a little progress and some days you will make a little more progress. Immigration matters: New rules for NOC skill levels C & D occupations (Part 2) The first step in any TFW option is: an Employer’s ability to demonstrate that the job offer is legitimate. Job genuineness is determined by HRSDC though the assessment and issuance of a positive Labour Market Opinion (LMO) to Employers if:

Marva Kollar Contributor While new language requirements are mandatory for Temporary Foreign Workers (TFWs) with job offers under NOC Skill Levels C & D Occupations such as trades, clerical and manufacturing industries, TFWs continue to have options to work legally in Canada under the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP), through the recruitment and selection process of the Ministry of Labour in their homeland, independently by Employers qualified by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC), also known as Service Canada or Authorized Representatives representing Employers also known as a Third Party Representatives. An Authorized Representative represents Employers to ensure that they uphold the Temporary Foreign Worker Protection Act (TFWPA) as failure to do so will result in Employers being barred from hiring TFWs for two years and they are further penalized by having their names displayed on the Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s (CIC’s) Temporary Foreign Worker Program’s Ineligible Employers website.

a) Employers have proven to HRSDC that they are unable to find Canadians citizens or permanent residents to do the job being offered to the TFW. b) There is a valid Employment Contract between the Employer and TFW that meets provincial/territorial employment standards, clearly identifying wages, job duties, work conditions, etc. c) Employers pay TFWs recruitment fees, immigration fees; airfare to and from Canada, provide free housing, health insurance, etc. d) Employers are in compliance with TFWPA, adhere to union rules; and e) In the case of agricultural workers, Employers abide by employment rules under the National List of Commodities which restricts employment to on-farm primarily agriculture such as fruits, vegetables, tobacco, horse, poultry, swine, etc. The second step is: Authorized Representatives act as counsel to Taws, assess Work Permit applications according to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA),

Regulations and other invaluable resources, assess new language requirements, submit Work Permit applications to the Canadian High Commission/Embassy representing the TFWs homeland, prepare TFWs for Work Permit interview, ensure TFWs understand their obligations to the Employers and upholds their temporary residence obligations. A Visa Officer represents the Government of Canada at a Canadian High Commission/ Embassy in the TFWs homeland, doublechecks positive LMOs issued by HRSDC, determines if Employers, Authorized Representatives and TFWs are in compliance with IRPA and Regulations; then, makes a final Decision to issue or refuse Work Permit based on TFWs skill, experience, credibility, etc. The final step is: TFWs getting beyond the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers upon arrival in Canada. CBSA officers are responsible to triple-check positive LMOs issued by HRSDC, doublecheck Work Permits, screen TFWs protect border crossing and airports. At this point TFWs can be denied entry into Canada if the CBSA believes that Employers, Authorized Representatives and/or TFWs are in breach of IRPA and/or Regulations.

Authorized Representatives continue to represent TFWs at the port of entry/border should they be denied entry, detained at an Immigration Holding Cell and act as counsel to represent TFWs at Detention Review/ Bail Hearing. In a similar manner, Authorized Representatives continue to represent Employers with applications to Extend the LMO and Extend Work Permits. Widely accepted, “ignorance of the law is not an excuse” the new rules create leverage for TFWs to abide by Canada’s immigration, highway traffic laws and labour laws including workplace safety and their right to refuse unsafe work. Evidently, the new rule protects TFWs and allows them to return home to families and friends who anxiously await their safe arrival in their homeland. Contact your Authorized Representative to learn more about TFW who entered Canada before July 1, 2012, Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP) before 2013 or to find out if you quality for the one-year exemption available to certain TFWs

How I Went From $30,000 A Year To $30,000 A Month through the treacherous waters of “multitasking”. I think multi-tasking and that concept is the worst thing for productivity. I prefer “single-tasking!”

JG Francoeur Contributor My first goal when I got into business was to turn my annual income into my monthly income. The year before I earned $30,000 and I wanted to make that every month. In 12 short months, my company was generating $30,000 a month and my goal had been reached. I wasn’t satisfied with the goal I wanted to find out what happened and what tools I used to make it happen so I can pass those tools on. Success and generating above-average income is not rocket science and it’s not difficult, it’s about establishing the right habits! You and I both know people who are not as privileged, smart, intelligent or positive but they make ‘big money’ so why can’t we. That was the question I was asking myself. One of the greatest gifts one of my mentors gave me was that he told me to forget multi-tasking and focus on single tasking. Then he gave me a template, which I used every day to boost my income from $30,000 a year to $30,000 a month. If you visit http://jgfmarketing.com/howi-went-from-30000-a-year-to-30000-amonth/ you can download the productivity template I use on a daily basis to guide me

Don’t expect a super duper, earth shattering document that can make espresso and cook you diner – it’s simple and effective! Here’s how you use it: 1. Notice how there are 4 times as many “revenue generating activities” compared to “impact activities”. The difference is that revenue generating are activities that put cash in the bank. e.g.: meet with a client, create a new sales page, sales call, webinar, speaking engagement, meeting with a JV, send a sales email, building a new sales sequence… Impacts are things that make an impact and will generate revenue later. e.g.: creating policies and procedures, learning a new skill, developing a manual… See the difference? Big income earners spend their time doing rev-gen vs.. Minutia! 2. The most important part of this template is the daily evaluation. How did you feel after that day… don’t skip this part! If you take action on this template and focus on ‘rev-gen’ activities your income can’t help but go up! I’m not promising you will turn your annual income into your monthly income but would an extra 50 percent help?

Deja vu: 7 lost lives in Walkerton. $1+ billion lost on Highway 407

Tammy Flores Contributor For the second time in my 25-year career, I find myself being ignored by the Government of Ontario after making an informed proposal to senior public officials. The only silver lining that I can think of this time around is that if the government of Dalton McGuinty continues to fail in heeding my advice, as did the previous Mike Harris government in regards to the water/wastewater industry in Ontario, it will only be a minimum of $1 billion lost to Ontarians rather than the lives of seven innocent Ontarians. Almost one year prior to joining Ontario’s Privatization Secretariat in March 1998 as

Vice President (assistant deputy minister equivalency), Corporate Development with lead responsibility for the privatization for Highway 407 ETR, I was an independent consultant working in association with Coopers & Lybrand. In that role, I undertook a study of the water/wastewater industry in Ontario. Based upon those findings, I conceived and developed a solution to address what appeared to me to be glaring deficiencies in the Ontario water/wastewater industry. Coopers & Lybrand then arranged for me to present my findings to senior officials in the government of Mike Harris in the spring of 1997. As reported by The Globe and Mail’s John Ibbitson on December 20, 2000, “Had the Mike Harris government adopted a confidential report almost four years ago, there would be no Walkerton inquiry because seven people would not have died from contaminated water. To add irony to tragedy, the Ontario Tories are now actively considering a plan to solve the Walkerton mess that is virtually

identical to the plan they rejected...In the spring of 1997, senior [prospective] advisers to the Ontario government presented a report to a committee of deputy ministers and political advisers that offered a troubling diagnosis of the state of Ontario’s waterworks. A copy of the report has been obtained by The Globe and Mail...” In the case of Highway 407 ETR, my advice to Premier McGuinty is aided by the benefit of being, as described by Justice Drew Hudson in his July 10, 2004 Arbitration Decision, the “very senior employee of the Province who led and managed the process for privatization, the governing agreements, and the legislation” or as described by Robert Benzie of the Toronto Star, the “architect of the $3.1 billion privatization of Hwy. 407”.

I continue to await follow-up from Premier McGuinty’s Office on scheduling a meeting to “sit down and talk” about my proposal that would allow the transfer of a minimum of $1 billion of wealth from the shareholders of 407 ETR Concession Company Limited to Ontarians (McGuinty ‘all ears’ on 407 plan, Robert Benzie, Toronto Star, Wednesday, March 23, 2011, p. A2). In up-coming columns, I will layout the options available to the government of Dalton McGuinty to reign in spiraling tolls and establish more appropriate customer service standards. Co-written with Jodie Parmar - Jodie Parmar, is a former Vice President, Corporate Development, Privatization Secretariat/Ontario and successfully led the $3.107 billion privatization of Highway 407
