From the Desk of Ryan Lanzen Hello Members,

Follow Us Now!

Short and sweet this week, I want to give you an update on the progress of our bunker project! This is where we started, removing the sand from the worst greenside bunkers in preparation for brand new sand following any necessary repairs.

The “old sand was taken off property to be sifted, washed and mixed with new sand before it is brought back and will go into the fairway bunkers cinder free! Twitter

The new sand will go into the emptied green-side bunkers as is seen below. Project is well underway and the results thus far have been outstanding. Looking forward to another great golf season!

Golf Course Maintenance I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the new Superintendent at Torreon Golf Club. My name is Ken Thornock and I recently moved to Show Low from Sun Valley, Idaho. Though I have spent the larger part of the last 15 years in Idaho, I still consider myself from Wyoming due to strong family ties; growing up with 2 brothers and 3 sisters on a cattle ranch in Cokeville, Wyoming. Oddly, my experience growing up on a ranch is probably what led me to Idaho and a career in Turfgrass Management. I moved to Sun Valley to ski and work for a horse stables as a summer trail guide and winter sleigh driver. After several years as a trail guide on the same trail, I needed a change and took a seasonal job at Elkhorn Golf Club. Though I didn’t know at the time, I started my career in Turfgrass Management laying sod and raking bunkers for David Scharfen at Elkhorn Golf Club, an 18 hole course designed by Robert Trent Jones Senior and Junior. Though it was hard work, I loved being on the course and decided it was what I wanted to do. Since that first summer, I have obtained a bachelor’s degree in Turfgrass Science through Penn State University’s World Campus and worked at The Country Club in Salt Lake City, The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs and The Valley Club in Sun Valley. In conclusion, I wanted to express how excited I am to be at Torreon working with David again and doing what I enjoy. See you around the courses! Ken Thornock Superintendent kmt@torreon.com
