From the Desk of Ryan Lanzen Follow Us Now! Hello everybody! The seasons are definitely changing here in the White Mountains. Trees are turning all kinds of beautiful shades of red, yellow and orange, leaves are falling along with the temperatures and the grass growth on the golf course has definitely slowed. That being said, the courses are still in very good shape, make sure you get up here and get your last rounds of golf in before we shut down for the winter, the Cabin course will be closing on November 2nd! A couple housekeeping items to note: Arizona Golf Association handicap fees will be charged to your various accounts coming up in mid-November. If you do not want to remain on this roster as a Golf member and pay for your handicap fees, please let us know ASAP by emailing jaw@torreon.com. Recently you should have seen a mailing go out about our Employee Holiday Fund. If you do not reply in any way, your account will be charged $50 for the fund. If you reply, you can either decline to contribute or have the opportunity to contribute more as you please. Thank you for your attention to these items and please let me know if you have any questions. Golf Course News Hello Torreon Members! Greetings from your friendly Golf Maintenance Department. We wanted to give you all a brief update as we wind down the golf season. A few dates to remember: 

November 2nd-Cabin course closes for the season

November 30th-Tower course closes with the back 9 open for winter play on temporary greens. Please make note, this date will be subject to change. If the weather forecast calls for us to button things up a little bit early, we may have to change this date to ensure we are ready for another great season next year. If this is the case, we will inform you as soon as possible.

As we begin our winter preparations a few of the things you will be seeing are as follows: 

October 19 & 20 - Cabin tees are being star tined. This is a similar tine to a pencil tine, as noted below, that allows moisture and gas exchange through the tee soil profile.

October 21 & 22 - Tower greens will be needle tined (a process that is like driving pencils into the greens without pulling a core). This will be followed by a double roll and a light topdressing of sand. This will allow moisture and gas exchanges through the soil profile for winter turf respiration.

October 26 & 27 the same process will occur on the Cabin course greens.

Both golf courses greens, tees, and approaches will be sprayed with a variety of chemicals. These chemicals are predominately for fungus prevention. It will be followed up with a layer of wax to seal the chemicals and carbohydrate reserves in the plants. When all of the spraying is completed the greens will be coated in a very heavy layer of sand to protect the most important part of the plant "the crowns". Then all greens will receive a fence around them to keep the wind and hopefully the animals away. Lastly, our most exposed greens will receive a special turf blanket that will keep them nice and toasty all winter long. There will be 9 covers on Cabin and 9 covers on Tower. We have already begun to mow down the native grass areas around both courses. This will continue until completed. This aids in eliminating disease pressure on the tees, as well as, allowing for new turf growth in the spring. Core aerification will occur on all fairways and roughs over the next month. We will begin on the Cabin course after it is closed so as not to disturb playability. Once the Cabin course is completed we will begin on Tower roughs and finishing with the fairways. The cores will remain out all winter and everything will be cleaned up next spring prior to opening. I hope this information finds you well and we always appreciate when members are involved. If anyone has any questions or concerns please feel free to reach out. THANK YOU all for great season and we look forward to another one next year with more good things to come! I hope you all have a great rest of the fall and enjoy the winter. We hope to see you some this winter and look forward to seeing everyone next season. Sincerely myself and the rest of our fabulous team, David Scharfen Director of Agronomy Torreon Golf Club www.torreon.com www.troongolf.com
