Care & Support in Cornwall
Children's Centres • access to health and parenting support services • information about training and employment • access to play activities and childcare • a base for childminder networks • support for children and parents/carers with additional needs • community meeting rooms • crèche facilities • access to toy libraries Cornwall’s Children’s Centre’s are an integral part of the Early Help Locality Teams. The vision is for all children and young people in Cornwall to be healthy and safe to have good opportunities to achieve and to improve them. We are working to close the gap between those who are doing well and those who are doing less well by supporting those with greater needs.
Multi-agency Early Help services in Cornwall play a big part in narrowing the gap in outcomes for those children and young people who are vulnerable to poor outcomes. Families, carers and professionals identify additional needs early and work together effectively to assess those needs and to deal with them before they escalate into concerns about a child’s or young person’s health, development, welfare or safety.

Hurray - spring has finally sprung! Although the snow was brilliant fun, it’s just so lovely to be able to go down to the beach and run around barefoot, even if hot chocolate is needed to warm up afterwards! And as spring arrives, so does my second edition of Tots About. It's jam packed, and includes my first ever dot-to-dot! Check it out on page 23. I’m delighted to be featuring Swim Academy for Babies as our cover star. Owner & tutor, Sarah Burnett, told us all about her journey on page 2. There’s also a special offer for new swimmers at Carnon Downs! There’s exciting news from Molly Music who are now offering classes in Newquay - you can check out details on pages 18 & 19, where you’ll also find the new North Coast clubs & classes page.
Find our feature on Breastfriends Hayle on page 8. They run a fantastic support network helping breastfeeding mums. Sepsis is a treatable infection which all too often turns deadly. Find out more about it, and how to spot the signs on page 24. We've included a handy tear off card along with out regular first aid feature - this time covering bites and stings. Finally, don’t miss our brilliant Googly Fruit goody bag giveaway on page 9. As ever, please mention Tots About when you contact any of our advertisers - they keep the magazine free!

Swim Academy for Babies
Enable your baby to swim happily, safely and confidently. Sarah Burnett, the owner of Swim Academy for Babies, grew up around water and has always been passionate about swimming. When her eldest sons were born, she realised the importance of teaching her own children to be water safe, especially living in Cornwall and taking regular trips to see family in coastal Portugal, so she set about teaching them to swim as soon as possible. It was challenging as there was very little available, and the classes she could find simply didn’t feel “right”. She was overjoyed when in mid2007 she discovered there was a little known specialist swimming school in Cornwall. She managed to book her youngest into classes but was devastated when she discovered they were soon coming to an end. Swim Academy for Babies, as it was, closed in November 2007. Sarah was determined that Swim

Academy for Babies would live on and change the lives of young children and families throughout the county, so she bought the business in December 2007. In March 2008, when her first two children were just 2 & 3 years old, after a period of extremely intense training with Amanda Walker (Birthlight) & Emie Kitson (Aqualight), as well as training with the STA and the RLSS, she opened a brand new and updated version of Swim Academy for Babies. Taking over Swim Academy for Babies meant she could have a fulfilling career, but also one which was flexible enough to allow her to have time with her children. Sarah now has four children and is able to see them off to school in the morning and to welcome them home at the end of their day. Sarah’s mission now is not only to teach babies & their parents about the magic of water, but

also, by recruiting and training other mums to teach with Swim Academy for Babies, she can share the pleasure of a balanced work and family life, of having proper family time whilst being lucky enough to have the most satisfying career in the world: “I leave every class smiling. It has certainly changed my life and I hope it will change the lives of all the parents and babies who come through our Academy. These amazing babies will learn skills that they will thank you for forever. It really is pure magic.” Swim Academy for Babies is now a team of 12 mothers, teaching babies to swim across the county and providing a unique nurturing experience for families. They run classes for babies from newborn to 4 years in a warm, natural, loving and fun environment. Using internationally proven techniques, they encourage you to experience magical times with your baby, deepening your special bond whilst helping babies enjoy the water. Carefully tailored exercises, sensory games and fun

songs are used to teach water awareness and safety, allowing babies to explore and discover what their bodies are capable of. As Sarah explains: “The earlier babies are introduced to water, the sooner they can master vital water safety skills whilst increasing their strength and stamina. Our classes are not only incredibly good fun, but they also improve babies’ lung capacity, self confidence and general health & fitness levels. The whole experience is also great for parents’ fitness & self esteem as well as for meeting new families I currently attend classes with my youngest daughter at our Kernow Hydro Venue. She absolutely loves the water and started swimming independently at just 11 months old! I encourage every parent to experience the incredible enabling power that comes with this type of baby swimming!” Enclose this article with your fees to receive 5% off classes at Carnon Downs. This is a special welcome offer to new swimmers on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, Summer Term 2018 only.

Breastfriends Hayle: supporting mums to a positive breastfeeding journey Being a new parent is amazing but it’s also one of the hardest times of our lives: it can feel very isolating and mothers tend to have very high expectations of themselves. Breastfriends is a lovely place to come and share your experiences with other mums; where it’s okay to feel a bit overwhelmed and to feel you're not alone. “I really wasn’t sure what to expect from a breastfeeding group, so I was a bit apprehensive about going,” says Emily about her first time at the group. “As soon as I walked through the door, I realised there were people from all walks of life. It's a lovely place to go every week.” To Claire, the group has been an invaluable source of comfort: “Breastfeeding support was incredible. They were beyond encouraging. Without them I'd be a crumbling mess and pile of goo. Feeding is so different for every baby, and it's been
6
wonderful to be able to share stories.” Every week is different: it may be a new mum who needs to talk or have a peer supporter observe how their baby feeds sometimes small adjustments can make feeding a lot more effective. Often mums who feel that their previous breastfeeding experience didn't go to plan talk with peer supporters who offer a 'debrief': a sensitive, non-judgemental chance to reflect on the issues they faced. Parents might have a particular question, just need a good old moan or simply to get out the house. They also encourage expectant and future mums to come along to meet the team and learn about breastfeeding basics. Partners and siblings are more than welcome too. The peer supporters are all volunteer mums who have breastfed their babies. Between them, they’ve come across most

challenges that parenting has to offer! They have first-hand experience of overcoming shallow latch, tongue tie, mastitis, expressing and pumping, weight gain issues, premature babies, tandem feeding, nursing toddlers, thrush, combination bottle feeding, returning to exclusive breastfeeding, and healing sore nipples.
They are all expertly trained by Real Baby Milk and undergo DBS checks and annual update training in line with the UNICEF Baby-friendly Initiative. In fact, one of the founders of the group is now a trainer for Real Baby Milk. Among their ranks is also a GP with a specialism in breastcare, a babywearing expert, a mother of five, hospital peer supporters, a birth-doula and a rocket scientist (not really, but they could be!) Breastfriends Hayle has just launched a new Facebook group where mums can ask questions, connect with each other and peer supporters share information so that mums are supported 7 days a week. There are other breastfeeding support groups across the county - see our clubs & classes pages or visit the Real Baby Milk website. realbabymilk.org/support groups @BreastFriendsHayleandStIves

Improving Sepsis Awareness is when the immune system responds to an infection by attacking the body’s own organs and tissues. The infection can be anywhere, including the lungs, throat, urinary tract or skin, just to name a few. Sepsis causes the body’s normal reaction to infection to go into overdrive. It may lead to serious complications that affect the kidneys, lungs, brain, and heart, and, if not treated, can cause death. It is a serious condition that can initially look like flu, gastroenteritis or a chest infection. In December 2014 Melissa Mead lost her beloved son William to sepsis just after his first birthday. After a chest infection and pneumonia were miss diagnosed as a viral infection, William was sent home. Melissa didn’t know what sepsis was, or that the symptoms William was displaying were that of a dangerous, life-threatening condition. They were sent home 3 times in the 36 hours before William died. "I wish the doctors would have been thinking sepsis, I wish I would have known what sepsis was." says Melissa. "I ask you to read these symptoms and always ask ‘could it be Sepsis?' It might just save your child's life." What is sepsis? What’s the risk of infection? How do you get it and what are the signs, symptoms and causes? SEPSIS is the primary cause of death from infection around the world - and claims around 40,000 lives in the UK each year. Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening condition; however it can be easily treated if caught early enough. Sepsis can occur as the result of any infection. It

First Aid Facts
Bites & Stings Bites and Stings can be painful and sometimes become infected. Cornwall Resus are on hand to provide some easy first aid advice and Top Tips. Insect stings (bees and wasps):
Animal (or human) bites:
• If a sting is visible carefully scrape it off the skin with the edge of a credit card or similar object (do not use tweezers). • Elevate the injury if possible. Apply an ice pack (wrapped in a clean tea towel or triangular bandage) for 10 minutes. Seek medical advice if the pain or swelling persists. • If the sting is in the mouth give an ice cube to suck on, or sips of cold water. • Watch for an allergic reaction.
• Animal or human bites can be infected with bacteria or viruses - it’s important to flush out the wound thoroughly to reduce the risk of infection. • Irrigate the wound thoroughly with large quantities of water. • Treat for bleeding if necessary. Apply clean dressing and apply pressure. • Pat the wound dry and cover with a sterile low-adherent dressing. • Seek medical advice. Take your child to hospital if the wound is large or deep or shows signs of being infected.
Signs of infection: Redness | Swelling | Hot to touch | Smelly | Discharge | High temperature| Pain
If in doubt please seek medical attention. For more information about childhood illness, serious illness and life saving training including CPR for babies and children contact Cornwall Resus. Cornwall Resus are experts in Baby & Child First Aid and Life Saving training.
