My favourite thing to do at this time of year is to plan some fun family excursions. Whether that’s a big summer holiday or just the odd day out, everyone in my family loves having something to look forward to. We make our own countdown on the calendar, and tick the days off until our next ‘treat’. At the moment, the next big thing on our calendar is the Porthleven Food Festival. All the details are on page 3.

Family Fun at Porthleven Food Festival Friday 17 – Sunday 19 April 2020 From the schoolchildren’s parade that opens the event on Friday morning to an entire field filled with circus, crafts and lots more, Porthleven Food Festival has family fun right at the heart. And from just £18 per person to stay for the weekend, camping with the kids is a great option. There’s no entrance fee and daytime activities are mostly free, with tickets only needed for the evening music sessions. Starters Watch a superstar chef cook up a storm and boogie to the bands on the Lime Kiln Stage - there’s loads of free entertainment during the daytimes. And with around 100 food stalls you’ll be spoilt for choice on eats. Mains Over on the Moors Field you’ll find plenty to keep the kids entertained with rides, circus skills, craft workshops and kids cooking sessions. Drop in for ten minutes or stay all day. And keep an eye out in the harbour for a visiting mermaid… Dessert Stick around for the evening Shipyard Sessions. This year Friday brings an all-out Eighties theme party with tribute act Atomic 80s; Saturday sees top northern soul duo Smoove and Turrell funk it up alongside local legends Daytoner and then Sunday is Cornish Ska Night with Rudi’s Message, Go Go Skank and Tribo Groove. Penwith Kid’s Clothesline is a small community group encouraging the sharing of children’s clothing, footwear, toys, equipment and resources for FREE! According to Wrap, the waste charity, more than 300,000 tonnes of used clothing goes to landfill in the UK alone every year! Penwith Kid’s Clothesline aims to tackle this and to help families to reduce their carbon footprint by challenging the stigma of ‘second-hand’ and by encouraging people to pass on their pre-loved children’s items rather than buying new. The group started in a front room in Penzance and was inspired by similar initiatives and a growing awareness of the impact we all have on our environment. The group is now proud to be endorsed by Sustainable Penzance and hopes to inspire the community to work together for a better and more sustainable future.

Febrile seizures are very common in young children between 1-4 years, affecting 1 in 20. But many people don’t know what they are. They are a type of convulsion or fit caused by overheating, because the area in the brain which is responsible for regulating body temperature isn’t fully developed until around 4 years old. Babies and young children can suffer a febrile seizure from becoming too hot due to illness and fever. They can also overheat, and therefore be at risk of having a seizure, due to the temperature in their nursery being too high. SIGNS • Muscles in the body can become rigid • Arching of the back • Violent, jerky movements • Twitching limbs • Eyes may roll • Clenched jaw • Lips turn blue • Foaming at the mouth (sometimes this can be blood stained if the child has bitten their tongue/cheek) TREATMENT • Allow the child to fit, do not attempt to restrain them • Protect their head • Call 999

RECOVERY A febrile seizure, whilst scary to watch, is common and the child will recover quickly. Once the fit has finished, place the child into the recovery position, remove clothing and bedclothes to allow the body to cool down and open windows/doors for fresh air. Ensure you don’t overcool the child and monitor their airway and breathing. The child should relax, breathing should return to normal and they should recover consciousness within a few minutes. The child may be unaware of their surroundings for a short time and feel very tired. It’s entirely normal for them to fall into a deep sleep. If this happens, monitor the child, regularly checking for breathing and signs of consciousness.
