Care & Support in Cornwall

Children's Centres • access to health and parenting support services • information about training and employment • access to play activities and childcare • a base for childminder networks • support for children and parents/carers with additional needs • community meeting rooms • crèche facilities • access to toy libraries Cornwall’s Children’s Centres or 'Family Hubs' are an integral part of the Early Help Locality Teams. The vision is for all children and young people in Cornwall to be healthy and safe to have good opportunities to achieve and to improve them. We are working to close the gap between those who are doing well and those who are doing less well by supporting those with greater needs.

Multi-agency Early Help services in Cornwall play a big part in narrowing the gap in outcomes for those children and young people who are vulnerable to poor outcomes. Families, carers and professionals identify additional needs early and work together effectively to assess those needs and to deal with them before they escalate into concerns about a child’s or young person’s health, development, welfare or safety.

Fitness Wild

Step Outside...

Living in Cornwall we’re pretty spoilt for beautiful places to take our children. But Argal Lake outside Falmouth really does have everything going for it for parents with young kids - great cafe, big playpark, easy walks, good parking… and of course kettlebells. Argal Lake is now the basecamp for Fitness Wild who have the simple aim of helping people achieve their fitness goals through training outdoors and away from the gym environment. Set up by Jimmy Ray and Ben Glazzard in 2011, Fitness Wild offer personal training sessions and group workshops. They build functional fitness from the ground up, starting with the foundations of movement, breath and tension; promoting allround health and better wellbeing. And they do all their training outside, on Falmouth’s beaches and on the fields beside Argal Lake. We all know the benefits of exercise

2

but, once kids are added into the mix, it can be difficult to find the time. The opportunity to be able to exercise properly while knowing your little ones are happy and safe is something many of us are desperate to find. That’s why Fitness Wild’s ‘Wild Child’ workshops are the perfect solution. ‘Wild Child’ classes are a chance for parents to train and bring the children along too. From newborn babies right through to older children, all are welcome. These classes are for parents and, with communal group care of the little ones, everyone gets the chance to focus on their training. A recent study found that exercise in natural environments is linked to more energy, feeling revitalised and more focus whilst working out. Levels of tension, confusion, anger and depression are all lowered. As well as improved mental health benefits, the study showed greater enjoyment from exercising outside,

and a higher likelihood of continuing with the exercise regime. How many more reasons do you need to try exercise outdoors? The Fitness Wild team focus on posture, alignment and core control, making ‘Wild Child’ sessions ideal for new mums. Pregnancy and birth have huge physical impacts on your body, and being a new mum is physically demanding. That’s why pre & post natal exercise can be so important in aiding recovery and helping you keep fit and strong. At ‘Wild Child’ exercises can be tailored to suit you, with an emphasis on core stability, making sure your body works for you, not against you. While ‘Wild Child’ are group sessions, the instructors offer oneto-one support, particularly for new members: you’ll be talked through each exercise or movement, and given advice and support throughout. “It’s good exercise and pretty handy being able to bring my little boy. Plus they correct all your posture. Things I’ve been doing wrong for years at the gym. It’s nice to have the guidance.” Regular Wild Child-er, Amy, told us, adding: “A lot of people are put off regular gyms because of the atmosphere. Whereas there’s

just a great, friendly, community atmosphere here.” Wild Child sessions run on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9.30-10.30am at Argal Lake. No booking is needed and newcomers (whatever their level of fitness) are always welcome. To find out more, visit the Fitness Wild website. Or check out the video we made with them - it's on our Facebook page and the Tots About website. Plus, bring this article along for a discount on your first session. There's also a voucher for Wild Vibes cafe on page 15, so you can refuel after your workout.

Bring your air guitar to Baby and toddler music and movement classes are a fun way to introduce children to music, as well as helping to develop confidence, social and motor skills. Hickory Dickory Rock bring their unique music and movement classes to St Agnes and Truro, with home grown music that the whole family can appreciate. With reworked nursery rhymes and their own silly songs, toddlers and babies can enjoy a variety of genres, moods, and tempos alongside lots of interaction, adventures, actions, poems and general silliness. With music to introduce little ones to the variety out there, not just the same old kids music, grown ups can even enjoy the classes too! At Hickory Dickory Rock there’s a wide range of instruments and props to try out and rock around to. There are swathes of fabric to wobble and hide under, parachute fun, sensory exploration and a touch of makaton signing. Grown ups get to join in too (which the kids love to see!) with lots of opportunity to dance, sign, clap, tickle, blow raspberries and make music, as well as chill out with bubbles and fairy lights. There are two age appropriate music classes to try: Mini Mice (0-15 months) and Maxi Mice (16 months - 4 years). Both classes vary every week and your first trial session is free! Remember to pack your air guitar.

Messy Play

how getting messy helps child development simple or as complex as you want it to be.

Whilst babies and toddlers enjoy more complex, varied resources they will also have just as much fun sitting in a tray crunching cereals with their fingers and toes. By encouraging these new experiences you'll keep your little ones entertained whilst they build key developmental skills at the same time. It’s time to lock away your inner ‘neat freak’ and let your child (and your house) get messy! Messy play is a fantastic way to foster your child’s natural curiosity of the world. Not only does it allow your little one to develop key motor skills, it is proven to be one of the best play techniques to develop sensory awareness. Through tactile and visual messy resources, young children are given a safe space to build their imagination by exploring texture, colour, shape and even taste.

Despite the appearance of disorganised chaos, messy play can make an enormous contribution a messy, musical adventure for miniature explorers in NEWQUAY and TRURO

Let them get messy! Rainy housebound days can provide a great opportunity to get out the arts and crafts box and try some messy play. We've all found ourselves browsing the internet to find inspiration for what to do with our children. However the reality of messy play at home can quite often go down the drain when you realise how much time and effort it can take to set up and then clear up! But just remember, messy play can be as

6

ensory afari

to a child’s cognitive and creative development. Messy play is not about the structured neatness of a perfectly set up farmyard like we often see in catalogues. Instead it's a gooey, slimy, colourful medley of wonder. This less structured style of play can be introduced whenever you feel your child is ready. For babies, it’s better to introduce this when they are weaned. Babies like to explore through taste and there are some fantastic edible messy play materials available to you. Edible messy play can include pasta, rice, oats, baby rice and cereals. This type of activity is easy to prepare and can be scooped into the bin or cleaned up with a vacuum cleaner. Sensory Safari Classes If messy play in the home still doesn’t sound appealing, you could join your local sensory messy play group. Sensory Safari is a new, unique group in Cornwall, aiming to promote play through the senses. This is a

perfect opportunity for you and your little one to explore the process of messy play in a fun, stimulating environment. Children have the opportunity to enjoy several freeplay messy activities as well as a more structured music and sensory experience. Emily Wood, the founder of Sensory Safari, is a qualified teacher and mother, who along with seven years of developmental sensory play experience, provides safe, edible, messy play resources. Plus there's always lights, musical instruments, songs, sensory toys and activities to stimulate all your child’s senses. Each week has a different theme and every experience will be a learning journey for your baby or toddler. Just make sure you have the wet wipes on hand for when it’s time to say goodbye to the mess!

Title: That’s Not My Zebra’s Colours Author: Fiona Watt Illustrator: Rachel Wells Explore the colours of Africa with this beautiful addition to the well known and loved That's not my... series. This lovely book offers plenty to look at and explore with your young story lovers. Can you spot a familiar little face too? There is something in this book for every child to enjoy, as the content can be adjusted and developed as your child grows. For younger children this is a perfect introduction to colours and animals. For older children it's a lovely starting point for thinking about what makes us all special. That’s Not My Zebra’s Colours is a personal favourite of mine which I share with and recommend to all my friends and their little ones. It's a perfect addition to any bookshelf whether just starting or well developed!

If you'd like to order a copy or if you just wish to explore all the books Usborne has to offer your family, your school or nursery then please come and visit my little book nook. I look forward to meeting you!

First Aid Facts

Information Sheet 15

Fever & Temperatures Babies and Children often suffer with high temperatures, which can cause parents concern and children discomfort. It can also be a sign of serious illness so acting fast and escalating your concern is vital. Cornwall Resus talk you through what to do and offer some expert advice: 1. Try not to over or under dress your baby, generally young babies require 2 additional layers of clothing to adults. (i.e. a vest and a blanket extra to normal day clothes) 2. Never put your baby to bed in their day clothes, they can be too restrictive and easily overheat. 3. Always check their tummy or back when assessing if they are hot. This is a better indicator of core temperature. 4. Blue or cold hands and feet don’t always mean your baby or child is cold - it can often be a sign their temperature is rising, so always check with a thermometer. 5. Tympanic (ear) thermometers are not reliable in under one year olds. They can also be expensive. A simple under arm digital thermometer is reliable and cheap. 6. Normal temperature is 36-37 degrees Celsius, anything persistantly above or below this needs to be monitored. Normal temperature varies in different age groups.

It is always best to seek medical attention if you are worried. 7. Tepid sponging is NOT recommended. Take off clothing and allow your baby or child to cool down naturally. 8. Give regular fluids. Breast milk if the baby is breast fed. 9. Give a child's dose (if old enough) of either Paracetamol or Ibuprofen for discomfort or distress but not for the sole reason of reducing the temperature. 10. Monitor for signs of dehydration: sunken fontenelle, sunken eyes, dry mouth or a reduced amount of urine output. 11. Seek further help if your baby or child develops a rash, appears less well, the temperature lasts more than 5 days, or they have a decreased fluid intake. MOST IMPORTANTLY seek medical help if you are worried. Parents have a natural instinct when their child is ill, don’t be afraid to act on it!
