an
WELCOME!
(IF YOU’RE COMING FOR THE FIRST TIME…)
It ffeels l as though h h a llifetime f has h passed since all of us here on the “Indian Summer” team were standing in the Screen Lounge of Phoenix Square and launching the very first year of the festival. But, in truth, it has only been a year. But what a year it has been. If you attended “An Indian Summer” 2011, you’ll be able to guess how amazed and pleased we were with the result and, particularly, with just how many people came down to share it with us. So, first things first, thank you for helping to make AIS such a success.
To show h our appreciation, we’ve decided to do the only thing we can do: Make “An Indian Summer” 2012 bigger, better and bolder. Of course, all of that would be so much bakwaas if we lost sight of the festivals original intention: to provide an immersive and entertaining guide to the many worlds of India and its people. So, if you came last year, expect to find the same exhilarating mix of film, music, dance, photography, art, food, education and enlightenment, just on a much
grander more d scale, l involving l venues and local and international artists of every stripe. If you’re thinking about coming for the first time, welcome. We’re going on a journey to the heart of India and we want you to join us. This programme will help you to navigate your way through your Indian Summer Experience, with tantalising descriptions of the wide range of events on offer and where and how to find them. Frankly, we can’t wait.

FILM & PERFORMANCE An Indian Summer 2011 brought you a wealth of film, music, dance and spoken word performances. This year, we’ve expanded the line-up to bring you more classic and modern Indian cinema and more music and dance from local and international artists, including another exciting musical collaboration between Eastern and Western disciplines. And that’s just the start. We will be showcasing poetry, (multilingual!) comedy and even a very special Indian Karaoke Evening. The phrase “something for everyone” is overused, but we feel confident that you won’t mind our saying it one last time!

The highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time in India, 3 Idiots is a comedy-drama about three engineering students. Based on the novel Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat, it is a potent crowd-pleasing cocktail of life, love, money, betrayal and hidden identities.
A critically-acclaimed modern classic tells the story of three school friends on a bachelor-party/road trip, which true to cinematic form, quickly becomes a voyage of self-discovery. Full of beautiful symbolism and strong performances, it casts a very individual spell.
A moving and intriguing drama about history, friendship, government corruption and the power of tragedy to unite. With a stunning ensemble cast, including the always outstanding Aamir Khan, the film was a true labour of love, something which shows in every frame.
All the above films will be shown on Screen 2 at Phoenix Square. Tickets will be available for individual films, priced £5, with weekend tickets also available for £16.
