Aryen Moore-Alston DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS AT PARK + CHERRY

A

ryen Moore-Alston was destined for a life that was anything but cookie-cutter. Raised in Naples, Italy by an American Navy musician father and film actress mother, Aryen is a true example of a woman following her dreams. She has met the Pope, studied in Tokyo (she’s fluent in Japanese, Italian, French, and Spanish), worked for NASA and Apple®, and was a finalist on Season

abroad for a year in Tokyo, further expanding her knowledge of food culture. That’s also where she truly learned her love of cooking. “We didn’t have a traditional cafeteria like you do in American colleges and universities. You could only eat lunch, and after that, you’re on your own. So, every student cooked, and they had this massive kitchen in our dorm,” remembers Aryen. “I started cooking and the girls in the dorm would smell my food. I’d make a smorgasbord of food because I’m going to the store and cooking for the week in my American way.” Eventually Aryen would be gifted packages of food from her classmates wanting more of her Italian/American inspired meals.

10 of Food Network Star.

Through studying Japanese and computer science, the latter led her back to the U.S. to work for NASA and later Apple®. Aryen realized food as her passion while working multiple jobs to keep her culinary dream alive. “I got a phone call from Food Network, and they said, ‘Hey, we want you on our show Food Network Star, Season 10.’ And that was it; I went on the show and left everything behind.”

Aryen is the first to tell you her parents are to thank for her diverse upbringing. “I grew up in a dancing act kind of family in the most romantic country in the world,” shares Aryen. “I grew up with pizza, pasta, and truffles.” It’s no surprise she fell in love with food at an early age. So, while her father sang for the ambassadors and heads of state, she was learning how to prepare Southern Italian cuisine. It was with her father’s passing that the family’s cooking role fell to her. “I mourned his loss through culinary. I taught myself how to cook through the Joy of Cooking cookbook—I cooked every recipe in that cookbook. And that began the journey,” shared Aryen. Education brought her to America, specifically Spelman College in Atlanta, GA. Eventually she decided to study

Post Food Network, she moved to Memphis to continue following her culinary dream and opened a catering business called Sweet Potato Baby. “That led to a café... and then that led to owning the first female, black-owned fine dining restaurant here in Memphis.” Located in Cordova, the restaurant was aptly named after her father and inspiration, G. Alston. Regarding her journey, she says it goes without saying that you’ll make mistakes. “You just make mistakes as you get older. You try to find your way and you don’t really have all the answers; you don’t even know what you’re doing half the time... but you just keep going. And this is what’s happened. So [now I’ve had a] catering business, café, restaurant, and bar.” “Nothing beats a failure, but a try,” states Aryen. Aryen Moore-Alston is now the Director of Operations for Park + Cherry Café by Chef Phillip Dewayne at the Dixon Gallery & Gardens and Recover Meal Services and her culinary work has appeared in numerous publications across the United States. story | ANNA BELL j an u ar y/ feb r u ar y 20 22

ooking for good food, good drinks, and charming, new scenery only a short distance from 901? You might should consider Wilson, AR. Wilson, AR is an up-and-coming wine and food destination situated in the heart of the Arkansas Delta. Only 45 minutes from downtown Memphis, and about an hour and fifteen minutes from Collierville, Wilson offers a quick getaway to beautiful Northeast Arkansas. Beginning as a company town in the late 1800s and home to logging and sawmill operations, Wilson’s cleared land was then used for agricultural purposes, quickly making a name for itself as an agricultural powerhouse in the South. However, by the 1970s, the community saw a rapid decline in economic activity and population due to the mechanization of farming. SCAN THE QR CODE HEAR THE FULL INTERVIEW

In recent years, Wilson has revived its entrepreneurial spirit and is undergoing a rebirth into a bustling town and tourist destination full of charm and activities authentic to its agrarian history and southern character. We had the wonderful opportunity of sitting down with

Right: Known for its Southern homestyle food in the heart of the Delta, Wilson Café & Tavern is sure to create a memorable dining experience. Below: The Grange at Wilson Gardens encourages visitors to stop by the gardens and take a self-tour of the grounds, learning the many produce and herb selections grown on-site.

Cyndi Detty, Director of Marketing for the town of Wilson, to discuss what exactly this rising destination has to offer. “Our crown jewel of programming is our Wilson Wine Experience,” says Detty. “We have weekly wine tastings every Friday night at the Wilson Café and Tavern from 4:00-5:00pm. This is a fabulous, very casual setting where our guests can learn the intricacies of all different kinds of wine. Ideal for the wine novice, as well as the connoisseur, it’s a fantastic opportunity for people to get to know and experience wine, ask questions, and not be shy, because sometimes wine can be a little intimidating.” In addition to their weekly wine tastings, four times a year they host a wildly popular Wine Dinner, which consists of a multi-course meal and wine pairing at the historic Wilson Theater in the heart of the unique, Tudor-inspired Town Square. Their newest wine experience is a Wine Weekend on President’s Day weekend in February 2022. “It will be a three-day event with multiple dinners, wine tastings, and stay at the brand-new Hotel Louis, which will be opening [Spring 2022]” shares Detty. This event is an exclusive, personalized food and wine experience for sixteen lucky attendees. With wine events each week and throughout the year, Wilson is quickly establishing itself as a wine destination. But they have delicious food, too. The Wilson Café and Tavern, which hosts the weekly wine tastings, offers Southern-infused lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch. “Chef Shawn Davis is our Executive Chef, and he creates the most amazing dishes. We have people coming in from all over Arkansas, Tennessee, Missouri, Texas, Mississippi, everywhere to come in just 18

to have lunch and dinner. It’s a special place.” A local favorite, Chef Shawn Davis also designs and prepares the multi-course meals for each of the four Wine Dinners offered throughout the year. If you’re making the getaway to Wilson, you’d be remiss to skip out on The Grange at Wilson Gardens. Described as “an agricultural and culinary venue rooted in Southern hospitality,” there’s nothing else quite like it. Centered on agriculture, culinary arts, and special events, you can shop the Marketplace for homegrown produce and plants or homemade items from

local artisans including clothes, jewelry, and crafts each Tuesday through Saturday. The Grange Kitchen offers baked goods, meals, and sandwiches for guests to enjoy at the gardens or take home. If you want to take the next step to relaxation on your wine getaway, schedule an appointment at The Grange’s Spa in the Delta. As mentioned, with the new year also comes the opening of Wilson’s first hotel: The Hotel Louis. Located on the Town Square, the luxury, boutique hotel combines the town’s signature Tudor-style architecture and Southern charm for a unique stay centrally located to all that Wilson offers. Grab a cocktail at the bar and enjoy the Delta sunset from the rooftop deck or relax with someone special in one of the sixteen historic rooms. “Built originally in the late 1800s, the hotel rooms were actually former apartments. So, the history in that building is just phenomenal and we know our guests will love that,” says Detty. With the Blues Highway, Route 61, traveling through the center of Wilson, we couldn’t possibly forget music. Wilson hosts a number of high-caliber music guests each year in their quarterly Wilson Music Series (past artists include Maggie Rose and Ashley McBryde) and showcase regional, up-and-coming artists in their Summer Music Series on the Square.

One Bite at a Time

H E A LT H Y E AT I N G HABITS IN THE NEW YEAR

22

TOURCOLLIERVILLE.COM

ja nua ry /fe brua ry 2022

T

he turn of a new year is a wonderful time to contemplate what is on your plate, figuratively and literally! Establishing healthy habits, one bite at a time, is the perfect way to meet goals and set yourself up for positive change. Consider these nuggets of advice a little food for thought as you make it a mindful new year!

Choose Healthy Options When Eating Out A good rule of thumb when dining out is to build a solid foundation for your meal consisting of complex carbohydrates, lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats. For example, when dining out at a Mexican restaurant, opt for the chicken fajitas or fish tacos for a delicious and balanced meal. Instead of thinking about foods to avoid, think about what healthy items you can add to your plate. Remember, you don’t have to eat your entire meal all in one sitting. The to-go box is your friend! If the portions are on the larger side, eat half and if you feel satisfied, save the rest for lunch tomorrow. The food isn’t going anywhere! Just because it’s on your plate doesn’t mean you have to eat it all. Lastly, if you have questions on ingredients or preparation methods, don’t be afraid to ask your server.

“Components of mindful eating include chewing food slowly, bringing all your senses to the meal, turning off distractions, and listening to your body’s natural hunger and fullness cues.” - Emily Faquin, RDN, LDN

Eat Mindfully Do you ever eat a bag of chips while watching television? You start with a handful, and next thing you know, half of the bag is gone. Between television, phones, and tablets, it’s easy to get distracted during a meal. Mindful eating is a technique to slow down during mealtime to be fully attentive to the food and experience you are having. Components of mindful eating include chewing food slowly, bringing all your senses to the meal, turning off distractions, and listening to your body’s natural hunger and fullness cues. This technique can be useful in preventing overeating and can help you savor the eating experience.

In the new year, think about ways to reduce distraction or slow down during a meal. This might mean putting your phone down during dinner or eating at a table instead of your car on your lunch break.

Practice Light Meal Prep

“...spend some time prepping a few items that can be used for snacks or for creating multiple meals.” - Emily Faquin, RDN, LDN

When you hear the phrase “meal prep” you most likely envision sacrificing a precious weekend day to spend hours of your time grocery shopping, cooking multiple meals, portioning food into separate containers, and cleaning up the mess you’ve created. If this sounds overwhelming to you, you’re not alone. I recommend taking a different approach in following what I like to call ‘light meal prep.’ Instead of cooking every meal for each day of the upcoming week, spend some time prepping a few items that can be used for snacks or for creating multiple meals. For example, cut up fruit as a quick and easy snack that you can pair with yogurt or throw into a smoothie throughout the week. Roast a batch of veggies and cook some ground turkey to make tacos, wraps, or stir-fries to keep meals varied and exciting. Light meal prep gives you the flexibility to easily create a variety of meals that are healthy as well as satisfying. Like healthy eating, meal prepping doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing approach.

You Are My Destiny

DOGS ARE A REALLY BIG DEAL AROUND HERE! Daycare, Boarding & Spa www.dogtopia.com/carriage-crossing 901-443-1880

Hello there! Let me introduce myself. I’m Destiny, a two-year-old, female Labrador Retriever mix. Before I came to the shelter, I lived in a backyard with two other dogs and three puppies. One day, some humans drove up in a truck. We heard them say they received a call from someone because we were living in a backyard in dirt with no toys, no fresh water, and no food. Our human said he was having trouble providing for us and couldn’t take care of us anymore. So, the truck people used treats to coax us into their van, made us comfortable with warm fuzzies, and took us to where I live now, The Collierville Animal Shelter. When I was led out of the truck into a kennel, everything was scary and so strange! I watched the other dogs to see

“I’m your Destiny, you and I were meant to be” what to do. I quickly fell into a routine and began to pick up so many new tricks. At first, when the humans would touch me, I didn’t know how to react. I learned that what they were doing was called ‘petting,’ and it was relaxing, soft, and wonderful! I love it now. I’ve also learned new things like how to walk on a leash, how to sit, how to play… and I’ve learned what ‘love’ is! I have learned so much about the relationship that can develop between a dog and humans. It’s very special. So here’s the deal - it’s great here at the shelter, but it’s not the same as a forever family. Sometimes at night I dream about my forever home and the day I would leave with them to give some other dog the opportunity to use my kennel to rest, relax, and learn everything I’ve learned. The humans here say I should tell you that I would fit best in a home with humans that will give me praise, positive reinforcement, and lots of love. They told me I would bring so much fun, love, and companionship to an active forever family that enjoyed long walks and doing things like playing ball with me. I’m eager to please and very treat-oriented, so I‘m easy to teach. I would love to keep working with a family that would enjoy teaching me things like ‘down’ and ‘come.’ I learned my ‘sit’ command in just one day! Do you think you could be my forever family? I truly hope so! If you fill out an application, we can meet up at the shelter. Let’s discover if I’m your Destiny!

Ford Motor Company’s

IM PAC T

ON

COLLIERVILLE

I enjoy pondering what our beloved town will look like in 5, 15, or even 25 years and beyond. If you’re like me, then the town’s comprehensive “2040 Plan” is a good place to start, as it lays out a roadmap for our growth over the next 20 years while considering design, location, appropriateness, product types, building materials, infrastructure, and other key development elements (www.colliervilletn.gov/2040Plan). With the announcement of the Ford Motor Company/SK Innovations electronic vehicle facility in Stanton, TN, a mere 40 minutes from our historic Town Square, I’ve gathered some additional thoughts on the impact this site will have on our town, as well as what life might look like with this new, disruptive technology. Putting the Ford Blue Oval City concept and impact into perspective is challenging, but I’ll try. Ford will be making a $5,600,000,000 (that’s billions with a “B”) investment at the Memphis Regional Megasite. This will be a capital investment in land, facilities, and equipment. For an idea of the size of this investment, the Nissan auto plant in Jackson, MS, General Motors in Spring Hill, TN, and Volkswagen in Chattanooga would all fit inside the Ford Blue Oval City footprint. This will create 5,800 well-paying jobs, 27,000 direct and indirect (Tier 1, 2, and 3 suppliers) jobs, and 32,000 short-term construction jobs. At the end of the day, these economic development projects are all about workforce, and West TN, including Collierville, will see an abundance of well-paying, sustainable

28

TOURCOLLIERVILLE.COM

jobs for the region. An auto worker making $25 an hour equates to an annual salary of approximately $50,000; once accounting for healthcare, life insurance, pension and so on, the total compensation package pushes $70-$75,000 annually. The direct jobs will represent approximately $300,000,000 of new wages pouring into the area—a good thing for West TN and our community. What about Tier 1, 2, and 3 suppliers? Imagine a polyolefin car seat company setting up shop nearby to service Ford. Foam seats for the new Ford F-150 EV truck are made in the morning at a plant in Collierville, Fayette County, Millington, or Arlington, for example, shipped at 10:00am and installed that same day during the third shift. Just-in-time manufacturing with nice jobs connected to Ford. They are expecting 30,000 truck movements per week in and out of Ford Blue Oval City. What about Collierville? The crossroads of I-269 | SR385 | US 72, approximately 40 minutes from Ford and SK, offers an abundance of developable land for potential EV truck parts assembly, warehouse and logistics organizations, technical and sales support offices, restaurant and retail development, and hotels. I would imagine that the intersection of I-269 and US 72, at our southeast border, could see a facility like a Buc-ees®, with accompanying hotels, restaurants, and other services. Our office market could continue to accelerate if strategic suppliers to Ford desire having key support personnel nearby. I could see a new 10,000-25,000 square foot regional office

in town. A 40-minute commute from our town to the plant is short by most commute time standards today. Executives, managers, technical specialists, floor leaders, and other team members will need a place to live, and our housing market will continue to thrive. What does future mobility look like with the emergence of the EV and lifestyle changes? The introduction of electric vehicles could be as technically disruptive as mass-produced cars (think Ford Model T), the wide distribution of electricity (Niagara Power & Westinghouse), and the extraction and refinement of oil (Rockefeller’s Standard Oil). In many ways, I think people are going to reimagine how they use cars, and what mobility looks like in their lives. Shared mobility, from ride sharing and car sharing to “micro mobility” services like scooters, will impact how we get around. Maybe there will be fewer cars, and the cars that are around will be predominantly electric? Do consumers forego individual car ownership for a variety of ondemand options? Does it make sense to keep an expensive, “gas guzzler” SUV in your garage, or when that trip to Destin rolls back around, maybe you simply rent a car for a week? In addition to this technical disruption, everything I read now indicates that people will want to live closer to work, closer to their schools, closer to their friends, and closer to amenities. How will the reliance on a vehicle play into this new, “mixed-use” living lifestyle? I believe that we will see more Schilling Farms type developments, where one can live, work, dine, exercise, educate, worship, see the doctor, dentist, lawyer, and enjoy open space, all outside their back door and within walking distance. As we look to 2040, the future is bright in Collierville, and we remain perfectly positioned and organized to strategically take full advantage of the trends continuing to unfold. I look forward to seeing the many ways Ford Blue Oval City will positively impact our town for years to come.

Faith, Joy, and Community IN

THE

NE W

This past year, like any other year, has been filled with many ups and downs, but every year comes to an end. I am so ready to tackle 2022 and as I prepare for it, I am challenging myself to not fear the changes that might come, but to accept and even seek them. I can’t wait to see what this new year has in store for all of us as we are all connected within our Collierville community in some way. We are hopeful 2022 will be a step forward from all the struggles, difficulties, and troubles that came with this past year. Some need hope for new beginnings, and some need a light at the end of a dark tunnel. I personally am planning on a year filled with faith, hope, good family relationships, and a strong sense of connectedness with my neighborhood and community.

YE AR

I’m also planning on a year of growth. It can be difficult to learn how to accept our mistakes when taking on challenges, but an eagerness to get back up and turn those mistakes into life lessons is growth. So this year, I encourage you to try new things. Growth can be experienced in many ways; it can be mental, spiritual, or physical. In fact, for us to be balanced human beings, we should seek to grow in all these areas. Working on life balance makes a lot of sense this year, as always. This new year, I hope to concentrate on joy more than worry about being happy, as joy is a trait that

“Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” - Philippians 4:6 exists despite outside circumstances. Instead, let us reflect on Philippians 4:6 in the coming new year. “Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” I wish faith, hope, and joy to all our Collierville community.

DESIGNER MILLWORX PRESENTED BY: DESIGNER WHOLESALE

A

fter moving to a new home and consequently changing design style, Sherri Griffith had a real need for a certain look and functionality in her new furniture. “I took a dining table picture to Mark as inspiration and told him the length I wanted and how many people I wanted to seat, and he really took it from there,” says Sherri. Sherri is referring to Mark Beck of Designer Millworx who boasts 30 years of experience in custom cabinetry and furniture. “We’re in the business of taking people’s vision and bringing it to life,” shares Mark. “Custom cabinets for kitchens and bathrooms are our bread and butter. We do a lot of custom work like built-ins, mantels, and freestanding furniture for people all over the MidSouth, but I enjoy doing special projects, too.” With a particular vision in mind, Sherri took her project to Designer Millworx to be built for her new home. “I also wanted a drop leaf table to match [the dining table]. I had several antique drop leaf tables before that I could easily use for more seating, but could tuck away anywhere. So this new drop leaf serves as a sofa table primarily, and then I can pull it out easily to sit another six to eight people. We have five grandkids and entertain a lot, so I needed something that

looked nice but would stand spilt milk,” says Sherri with a laugh, “and Mark was able to custom-build that for me.” Working with Designer Millworx to design and create the bespoke table was a “wonderful experience,” mentions Sherri. “I feel like it wouldn’t have mattered what project I gave Mark, he would have said, ‘Yeah, I can do that for you!’ And he would do it.” Sherri intends on her new tables lasting the test of time. “With both of my tables being walnut and well-built, I guarantee they will be [antiques] one day,” says Sherri. Located on Washington St. in Collierville, the Designer Millworx showroom is a treat for those looking to design or refresh their living spaces with a specialized custom look. “When a client reaches out wanting to do a project [like Sherri did], we’re with them every step of the process. Once we have our first meeting and I understand the vision, we start the building process and I stay in contact with them. Alot of shops don’t do this, but I welcome them to come see the project at different stages as it’s being built. It’s rewarding seeing a project finished and the customer happy,” shares Mark. story | ANNA BELL

REALTOR TIPS NEW CONSTRUCTION IN THE NEW YEAR

In keeping with the theme of the new year, let’s discuss why new construction may be the best option for you to buy a home in Collierville.

Inventory of existing homes is very low. While the new home inventory is low as well, according to the Town’s website there are currently 378 residential lots available with more new subdivisions coming on line. If you can find a neighborhood where homes are being built that fits your needs, you might be able to secure a new home easier than finding an existing one.

Timing is everything in this market. Selling your current home will more than likely be easy but where do you go? New construction affords you the opportunity to know where you are going well before you have to sell your home, allowing for a less stressful move. You might be able to avoid a double move as well.

Costs have risen quickly over the last year in the construction industry. With the increased petroleum prices you can look for that trend to continue. In a market where the costs are rising, the sooner you get in the game the better. If you are looking to be in a new home this year, now is the time to start the process as build times are 8-12 months on a new home. While buying a new home offers many advantages, you do need to be prepared for delays due to the supply chain issues. Also, some selections may be limited due to limited supplies. However, if you time things right, you can end up getting the most for your existing home by waiting to put your home on the market closer to completion date, as well as setting the price on your new home early. If buying a new construction home sounds like a good idea, I recommend consulting a local Realtor® familiar with the market for advice.

You can get what you want. Probably the best reason to look at buying a new construction home is that it offers you the chance to get it right from the beginning instead of looking to take on a remodeling project. 40
