he Collierville Balloon Festival presented by Alston Construction returns for its second annual two-day event under a new name, management, and Balloon Meister! Locals and visitors from across the Mid-South can purchase tickets to an unforgettable family experience on Maynard Way in Collierville September 17th and 18th.

As a non-profit organization, The Collierville Balloon Festival is excited to host a weekend of fun to raise money for educational needs in the community. “Friday Night Lights for Special Needs Children and Adults” will kick off the event for enrolled participants on Friday, September 16th. This private event is led by the Collierville and Mid-South Rotaries and will offer a magical opportunity for all in attendance.

“We’re creating a unique experience to bring people together to the Town of Collierville for an event that gives families and those with special needs a chance to make memories together, while supporting local organizations with educational needs with the profits.”

Entertainment from the main stage will begin at 4pm with headliner bands Kevin & Bethany Paige taking the stage Saturday night and Almost Famous on Sunday night. “Alston Construction has committed to return as the Presenting Sponsor for the event, and we are excited that Orgill, the longest-running company in Memphis, will be the Stage Sponsor,” shares Lindsay. After 5:00pm, tethered balloon rides will be available to purchase at the event for an additional $20 fee. Be sure to bring blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the live entertainment and the balloon glow [coolers and outside food are not permitted]. CHAPTER ONE: THE RUN Everyone has a story. Mine starts in the middle, when I was abandoned by my humans at Carriage Crossing mall. Lost, hungry and scared, I couldn’t get my bearings. I was so afraid! So I ran… around the mall, along the highway… I was desperate to find my way home. Later, I learned that I had become pretty famous because people had been taking pictures of me and sharing my story on something called “Facebook.” The shelter humans tried to catch me so many times, but my running skills were pretty next level, if I say so myself. The shelter humans were finally able to catch me in my weakened state, and thank heavens for that.

CHAPTER TWO: THE GENTLE GIANT When I arrived at the shelter I was given a kennel, a bed, and a name, Seabiscuit. I hear my namesake was a famous racehorse, and they chose that to commemorate the heart and endurance I showed during my run. I quickly became known as the resident “gentle giant” and the “big teddy bear with an even bigger heart.” I’m a middle-aged, male, 95 pound, Shepard mix with an old soul. I love going on walks, or maybe you could call them ambles, because now that I’m safe, my racehorse days are behind me. I’m a mellow guy who loves to lean into humans when we pause to enjoy the day or stop for a chat. One of the human volunteers told me I’m the special kind of guy who touches your heart in a way that keeps you thinking about me even when you’re not with me.

CHAPTER THREE: #SEABISCUITSTRONG One day while out for a walk, one of the humans noticed that I had a growth on my hip. They took me to a human named “Vet” and she called the growth on my hip “cancer.” The humans at the shelter were heartbroken, but they rallied together to get me the surgery needed because they said I was a very special dog. I sailed through surgery and have been in a foster home recuperating ever since. I’ve been given a clean bill of health now, with the

exception of heartworm treatment, which the shelter will cover. I am so proud to add cancer survivor to my list of achievements! I’m also happy to report I’ve been cleared for adoption! I’ve started another chapter and already given it a title: FOREVER HOME. Now that I’m cleared for adoption, I hope you’re the other main character!

Home Among Us When my four kids were younger, you would find our house routinely messy. It wasn’t intentional, but it was our life. Between the baby dolls and legos, diaper boxes and baby bottles, homework, dishes, and laundry; even with two very engaged parents, keeping up with it all was a lot. Maybe you have found yourself in a similar spot? Or maybe you are in that season of life now? I promise you, the days are long but the years are short! Back then, my wife and I stayed up late and prayed we could get the

we see the God of the Bible setting aside a ‘place’ [sometimes not always in ideal locations] for the people to call ‘home’. Then in dramatic fashion, Jesus [the Word in John’s gospel] came to Earth to ‘reside’ or ‘make his home among us’. Jesus wanted to not just be known by humanity, but to be near them, with them, and love them, despite how messy and chaotic. Jesus didn’t need the world to be perfect before demonstrating His love for humanity. My encouragement to us all is to take our cues from Jesus. Let’s demonstrate love and grace to one another in our homes, no matter how messy or chaotic they often tend to be!

The temperature controlled, walk-in wine cellar holds 700+ bottles, completely visible on all sides. f there is one room in a home that shows its age the fastest, it’s the kitchen. The telltale sign for a home built in the early 2000s is the dark granite countertops and cabinetry. Tim and Cindy Vandagriff moved into their home nearly 15 years ago, and with the right design updates, transformed their previously trendy dark kitchen into a timeless airy and inviting space. “The kitchen had nice appliances and a nice footprint, but we wanted to lighten it up,” shared the Vandagriffs. The original twotier kitchen island and lack of cabinet lighting were other giveaways showing the kitchens’ age. So in an effort to create a more open concept, but stay within the original footprint of the home, the Vandagriffs chose a gorgeous one-level Cambria Brittanicca Gold quartz countertop and backsplash. “Making the island and counter space all one level really opened everything up the way we wanted it to,” shared Cindy. “Originally we had another countertop picked out that was supposed to match the cabinet color really well, but with shipping the way that it’s been, I didn’t want to wait that long and not have a kitchen. So we went back and honestly, I found this Cambria quartz that matched even better!” The original cabinets were refaced and painted in Sherwin Williams Heron Plume and Vandyke Brown glaze to brighten the

space. Glass cabinets were installed to bring the cabinetry to the ceiling. “The cabinet addition may be my favorite part,” shares Tim. “I think it made the biggest difference.” The lighting inside the top cabinets and beneath the upper cabinets are natural focal points of the room. Below the island, the vent-a-hood and drawers are colored in a rich Smoke stain for a lovely contrast. “Mark with Designer Millworx made the drawers after we completed the kitchen because I wanted that handy space for my pots and pans,” said Cindy. The room was painted in Sherwin Williams Liveable Green. An oil-rubbed bronze faucet is mounted above the Top Zero island sink, and a matching pot filler above the range completes the space. “It felt like a good time to do a few things for us, like move the microwave down from the upper cabinets because I’m short,” laughs Cindy, “and we have this nice eat-in area for the grandkids and everyone to be together.” Tim quickly chimed in, “We have two sons who live in Collierville and a daughter in Nashville, so when all the family gets together we wanted a place where we could all visit and gather for holidays.” The Vandagriff’s remodel transformed their kitchen from the dark trends of yesterday to a bright future ahead, full of space for future gatherings. story | ANNA BELL
