Letter from the Editor

THE HEART OF OUR TOWN

C

hristmas in Collierville is a wonderful time and it is with a hopeful heart that we approach the season. After another trying year, and one in which we faced a crisis unlike any we have ever known, we hope that this time can be spent appreciating what is truly special about this town: each other. Nothing speaks more to The Heart Of Our Town than this quote from Mayor Stan Joyner, when he said, during a recent Main and Mulberry interview, “Neighbors taking care of neighbors… that really is the essence of what Collierville is all about.” With this inspiration in mind,

“Neighbors taking care of neighbors… that really is the essence of what Collierville is all about...” -Mayor Stan Joyner Main and Mulberry: Public Policy September 30, 2021

we’ve focused both our cover and our feature on the hearts of Collierville. In our November/December feature, we highlight the Collierville church community by exploring the goodwill and acts of service spread around town by churches and their members, not just during the holiday season but throughout the entire year. As part of this article, we’ve included the pastoral care provided by local churches to the victims, their families and our first responders after September’s tragic events. We are also proud to include a special letter, coming directly from the Town’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen, that speaks to the heart shown during the tragedy and in its aftermath.

Tour Collierville Editor Regan Hewitt

Additionally, in this issue, you will find a pastor encouraging us all to have thankful hearts throughout the holiday season, a Christmas playlist provided by local musicians in our Main and Mulberry section and so much more. We can and will enter this season with a tremendous amount of hope, love and faith — all essential components of being #colliervillestrong. Wishing you all the best for the holiday season!

P.S. Visit www.tourcollierville.com to find a variety of places where you can pick up prepared Thanksgiving eats, as well as our annual Christmas church services directory!

On the Cover We are excited to feature a photo from a previous Christmas in Collierville Home Tour! This heart ornament spoke to us, and we hope it speaks to you.

eaningful work is important to everyone, regardless of what that work entails. Imagine being middle-aged and switching careers because you heard a calling. That’s what happened to Romona Jackson, founding President and CEO of The Women’s Advocacy Center© in Collierville, TN. The first time Jackson felt led to change course, she was pre-med in college, following her mother’s dream. Her professor at the time shared that he thought she would be a good lawyer. Jackson trusted his words but it wasn’t until the message was reinforced that she realized law was

“I REALIZED THEN THAT THIS IS WHAT THE CALL HAD BEEN. THIS IS WHAT THIS RESTLESSNESS, THIS SENSE OF COMING OUT INTO THE DEEP HAS BEEN ABOUT. THIS IS WHAT I NEED TO DO.” - Romona Jackson

her first calling. “A woman came up to me in Whole Foods® and said ‘The Lord is saying to me that you need to be in law school,’ and I got chills when she said it,” remembered

Jackson. “Shortly after that, I ended up getting into law school and everything worked out, but those two [remarks] were really pivotal in me deciding to go.” Later in her law career, while on vacation, another voice of reason called Jackson into deeper waters. “At that time, I was working as an attorney, representing women who needed orders of protection, and I was getting this call like ‘Come out into the deep’ that I didn’t really understand. I felt like I was out pretty deep, but I kept feeling that there was something else,” she said. Jackson recalled that, while snorkeling, “This woman came along and said ‘If you go out a little farther into the deep, you are really going to see something incredible.’ I really wanted to see, but I was afraid to leave an area where my feet touch the bottom. But when I got to a place where the water was going to come over my head… I really remember sensing the Lord saying to me, ‘Romona, this is how you’re walking with me. You’re walking with me in a way that as long as you can touch the bottom, so to speak; as long as you know what’s going to happen; as long as you can see the way forward, you’re willing to trust, and you’re willing to do what I’m asking you to do, but I’m asking you to come out into a place where you don’t know what’s going to happen. This is completely unknown, and you’re really gonna have to trust me.’ ” After this moment, Jackson said, “I realized then that this is what the call had been. This is what this restlessness, this sense of coming out into the deep has been about. This is what I need to do.” So, she did. Jackson turned in her notice to the law firm and pursued founding The Women’s Advocacy Center©. “I had been helping women kind of on an ad hoc basis, just as they came along; the women from my church or women in the community that said, ‘Hey, I need some information about domestic abuse.’ After that trip, I just formalized it,” she explained. Listen to Romona Jackson’s full episode to get insightful tips on how to speak with someone who you think is struggling with domestic abuse and find out more information about The Women’s Advocacy Center©. story | ANNA BELL n o vemb er / d ec emb er 20 21

B I GGER , BOL D ER , B RIGH T ER D A Y S A R E H E R E When it comes to taking care of yourself, a little rest and relaxation go a long way. Throw in endless blue waters, some shining sun and a Caribbean breeze and you’ve got it made. But you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better beach day than at Perfect Day at CocoCay — a Royal Caribbean private destination in The Bahamas that takes winding down up a notch.

A B ETT ER WAY TO B E ACH As soon as your ship arrives, the island is yours to explore. If the ocean is calling your name, two beach areas offer their own distinct vibe. For some peaceful suntanning on powdery sands, a tranquil swim or colorful snorkeling, head to Chill Island and soak in the zen. For those looking for something more active, South Beach is for you, with volleyball and beachside basketball courts, paddle boarding and more available for some friendly competition.

THE ULT I MAT E P O O L DAY If the pool is your preferred way to get wet, the island boasts the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean, Oasis Lagoon. Make your way through the different coves each with a vibe all its own. Splash right in at the kid-friendly sloping entry. Take your first sip of a cold Coco Loco at the swim-up bar before lounging on one of three swim-up islands. Or treat yourself to total relaxation in the privacy of your own cabana, complete with attendant service.

LUXUR Y MEETS C A R IBBE AN CO O L Speaking of cabanas, it doesn’t get any better —

or more luxurious — on the island than the floating cabanas at Coco Beach Club, an exclusive private-access beachfront retreat. The cabanas or club admission also grant you access to an incredible infinity pool, as well as the on-site restaurant dishing an elevated menu of filet mignon, lobster and more.

Floating Cabana

VIE W FROM TH E TOP There’s no shortage of picture-perfect photo opportunities at Perfect Day at CocoCay — but for the ultimate vacay shot, capture the entire island from up to 450 feet high in the Up, Up and Away helium balloon. It’s an incredible flight with unparalleled views and truly unforgettable memories.

The new Odyssey of the Seas Now sailing from Fort Lauderdale

T HE BE ST AT SE A Of course, there’s plenty of adventure to be had before and after your visit to the island onboard the world’s most incredible ships — like the ocean’s largest ship, Symphony of the Seas, the newest in the Royal Caribbean fleet, Odyssey of the Seas or the Amplified Oasis of the Seas. The choices may be tough — but each delivers the vacation of a lifetime.

A LETTER F ROM YO U R MAYO R A N D A L DE R ME N Dear Collierville Community, For the past few years, we sent a letter to all Town employees thanking them for their service to the Town of Collierville. We would like to share this year’s letter with you:

“We are approaching the end of another challenging year. At this time last year, we were ready to say goodbye to a historical year that completely disrupted the world. We were hopeful 2021 would be different, but the trials of 2020 continued into the New Year. Along with our ongoing battle with life in a pandemic, we experienced a massive snowstorm, economic strains in our personal and professional lives, and a violent tragedy in the center of our community. Yes, we hoped 2021 would be different, and it certainly was. But something invaluable did not change. When we opened a vaccination site with our neighbors in Germantown, you volunteered to stand in the cold, smiled behind a mask, and helped make an impact in the safety of our community. When the snowfall kept coming, you drove snowplows in the early morning hours, provided reliable utility service, and helped make an impact in the safety of our community. When an act of violence disrupted our peaceful Town, you risked your lives to save others, shared compassion through the weeks of healing, and helped make an impact in the safety of our community. Whether you are providing a quiet space in the corner of the library, or looking for someone speeding through a neighborhood, you are ensuring

Collierville remains a safe place for everyone. Even when the safety of our Town is threatened, the Collierville community knows they can depend on you. In last year’s letter, there is a sentence that reads, ‘We believe, without a doubt, the Collierville community knows the Town is here for them no matter the circumstance or request.’ Those circumstances and requests were a test of resiliency this year, and you exceeded the challenge. Your work does not go unnoticed and will not be forgotten. Thank you for your unwavering service to the Town of Collierville. May you and your loved ones enjoy a happy holiday season, and we wish you the best in the new year.”

What should have been a stain on our community turned into a beauty mark showing Collierville as a beautiful Town full of neighbors helping neighbors. Town employees helping residents. Businesses helping customers. Residents helping us tell the story of what makes a community truly special. That story is all of us. As this year comes to a close, we wish you and your loved ones peace and joy this holiday season and a happy new year. No matter your faith, this is a season of joy, and we hope you can find joy right where you are, because Collierville is a great place to be. Sincerely,

Your Board of Mayor and Aldermen

We wanted you to read that letter because we also wrote it for you. As your elected leaders for the Town of Collierville, we have the honor of representing you. We hope you share the pride we have for these women and men who work tirelessly to ensure you have a safe community to call home. Whether this Town is home for your family or business, we are thankful you choose Collierville. On the afternoon of September 23, 2021, we immediately saw our community band together with the phrase “Collierville Strong” showing the entire nation we will prevail.

15 MINUTES TO FIT In October 2021, Manduu opened their newest location right here in Collierville! Owners Karen and Nick Cassella are thrilled to bring a new form of fitness to the area. “We can’t wait to introduce this exciting fitness concept to the people who live, work and shop in Collierville,” shared Karen. Manduu uses whole-body electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) to activate muscle fibers during short workout sessions, which are tailored to an individual client’s abilities and priorities. Each Manduu session only takes 15 minutes to provide the benefits of traditional weight-lifting! It seems too good to be true, right? Karen explained, “Think about how much time it would take to go to the gym and workout every major muscle group, from your triceps to your calves, throughout the week. A Manduu 15-minute EMS workout targets and strengthens those major muscle compartments all at once. Of course, individual results will vary based upon our client’s efforts and compliance with our fitness program.” This makes Manduu 55% more efficient, and often safer, than traditional weight-lifting. “Electricity provides the

resistance, not heavy weights, so there’s a much lower risk of injury,” said Nick, who is also the president of IPS® Corporation, another local Collierville business. Karen knew that Manduu was something special when she visited another Memphis location. “I left the second time wanting to invest in the company. It was amazing, convenient and efficient. You could feel that you had worked out all [the] parts of your body,” she said. Your first visit to Manduu will take about 60 to 90 minutes, as it involves a InBody machine scan (a body composition measurement tool that tracks a number of key biometrics) and learning about Manduu’s EMS device. During each session, you’ll perform an ultra-low impact workout that is gentle on joints, muscles and tendons while a specially-designed suit fitted with electrodes generates low-voltage electrical impulses that reach deep inside the muscle. Each session is personally tailored for adults of all ages and fitness levels. The impulses are controlled by highly-qualified trainers. “Only certain people can operate the E-Fit machine.

You must have a degree in sports science, kinesiology, nursing or a related field, and you go through a 9-day intensive certification process at Manduu America to get fully educated on the system,” said Karen. Manduu is popular in Europe and is the first FDA-cleared EMS training program. Karen said, “I’ve never met someone who hasn’t tried it and loved it.” Visit their website www.manduu.com to sign up for your first free Manduu session and try it today!

is the season for giving – literally. According to a Blackbaud Index study, which provides charitable giving data to nonprofits, about 34% of giving is done in the last three months of the year, with 18% given in December alone. Even more surprising, NeonOne, a nonprofit software company, found that 12% of giving will happen in the last 3 days of the year! Yet churches and church members are giving of both their time and their money all year long. 55% of Americans say they donated money to a religious organization (Gallup Poll, 2013). Much of this money, alongside countless volunteer hours, is given back to those in need. When we think of helping others, we need to think of churches. “It is important that churches impact the needs of others. When I started [at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church] twenty years ago, I asked the question, ‘If this church closed its doors, who would care besides us?’ That is certainly one measure of a church,” said Father Jeff Marks. So what exactly are churches focusing on with their donations of both time and money? For most churches, their leadership and their

members are prioritizing community efforts – whether those be within their immediate area or as part of a larger religious community that spans the world. For example, Compassion Church in Germantown is part of the Compassion Network, which has 34 churches spread across the world. Their giving is split into international and local efforts. Their

congregation raised money to help fortify their church in Haiti after an earthquake, and are housing over 80 Haitians who lost their homes. However, they are also a partner of Hope Center Ministries, a faith-based rehab center located in Piperton, and helped their sister church in Waverly, TN after devastating floods. In 2021, many churches were still faced with COVID-19 delays and issues when it came to normal church services, ministry efforts and more. Yet, local churches still made sure that support for area nonprofits was one of their main priorities. Peace Tree UMC only returned to in-person worship in June, but they made sure to keep their ministry efforts up during virtual-only services. “We highlighted nonprofits on Sundays to get those organizations in front of our congregation. We also had volunteers who did virtual reading for Project Transformation,” said Reverend Kristofer Roof. Project Transformation Tennessee, which recently

like Clorox® wipes and reusable face masks. If someone needs to go somewhere, to get food or a coffee, that face mask can help them access the space,” said Roof. Many churches are focused on timeless ministries that benefit the community every day, regardless of the larger circumstances. Epiphany Lutheran Church maintains a community garden and Blessings Box to make sure that those in need can receive both fresh and non-perishable food. “[The garden] was started… in 2012 to provide healthy food options to people with limited financial resources. Every year, the community garden has produced thousands of pounds of produce,” shared Communications Coordinator Carol Webster. In 2021, 2,305 pounds were donated to places such as the Collierville Food Pantry, Trinity Ministries and St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen! Their Blessings Box, located in the same area as their community garden, is routinely stocked with non-perishable food items by church and community members alike. “All in the community are invited to use it as needed, and donate as well,” said Webster. Similarly, Collierville United Methodist Church (CUMC) often focuses their service efforts on feeding others, from their Gleaning Ministry, which provides nearly-expired grocery items to those in need, to the United Methodist men providing lunch at Union Mission to Sunday school classes donating “tables” of food to the food pantry at Catholic Church of the Incarnation. “We have people who give and people

Peace Tree UMC also continued their relationship with the Big Heart Fund at LeBonheur and Golden Cross Senior Ministries, which works with seniors experiencing homelessness in Shelby, Fayette and Tipton counties. They also kept church members’ car trunks stocked with manna bags, which are full of nonperishable food donations, socks and more. “We started to add COVID items, things Peace Tree UMC

who serve. Depending on the mission, we can have anywhere from 10-50 volunteers,” said Associate Pastor Reverend Tondala Hayward. One of their most recent missions, “Love Local,” specifically focused on serving the Collierville community. “We wanted a program with acts of service within the local community, serving local people and getting them involved,” shared Hayward. Started in May 2021, this mission involved Sunday school classes writing thank you notes to the Town of Collierville’s Public Works department, Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) packing mission bags for Manna House and playing bingo with the eldery residents of Schilling Gardens Senior Living, as well as many other service opportunities. Yet the most recent evidence of a “Love Local” mission cannot be measured by tangible donations or data. In the aftermath of the Collierville Kroger mass shooting in September, local churches, their staffs and their members sprang into action. Several local clergy members responded in their roles as Police Chaplains, having just graduated from the inaugural session of the Collierville Police Department’s Police Chaplain Academy in August. In a statement made at the time of their graduation, Major David Townsend wrote, “A law enforcement chaplain is a clergy person with a passionate interest in and the specialized training for pastoral care in the world of law enforcement.” Their role is to provide strength to police, families and the community during times of crisis, and they certainly answered the call. Within hours, other pastors and crisis teams from several community churches were on the scene in order to provide support to the victims, their families and the community in general. Central Church offered counseling well after the shooting had left national news. Collierville First

Baptist Church made room for the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team, who are, according to their Facebook post, “crisis-trained chaplains” who came to “provide emotional and spiritual support to the victims and their families, the first responders and the entire community after this tragic event.” Many more churches, from Collierville United Methodist Church to Catholic Church of the Incarnation, offered prayer services for the community to attend, starting the day of the shooting and into the weeks following. “We opened up our church and invited pastors

from all different Collierville churches. It was unifying and really brought people together, because there were pastors from different denominations praying. It felt more eccumenical,” said Hayward. The Town of Collierville itself also held a prayer vigil the day following the shooting, welcoming all members of all faiths to join in a healing ceremony for the town. In many ways, these acts of service are the true examples of what churches can do for communities. “There’s a lot of people who are hurting right now, the church needs to step up and help people. Our mission is mainly to show the love of Jesus and to help the

people who are hurting and needing support and a friend… [by] giving them a place, a safe haven,” said Charlotte Gardner, the Communications Coordinator for Covenant Baptist Church. However, while all of these instances of service and giving are facilitated by Collierville churches, churches are nothing without their members. Time, money and love are willingly given by Collierville community members every day, whether it be collecting items for a manna bag or organizing a prayer service after tragedy strikes. As Linda Stamps, the Elder for the Meaningful Services Ministries at Collierville Presbyterian Church, said, “The Collierville community has provided overwhelming support! Our community has a big heart for giving and serving others.” story | REGAN HEWITT

A Thankful Heart

It felt like purgatory. It was late August, and I found myself in a negative pressure room with the door always closed and no natural light. I was here because when my doctor saw the CT scan of my lungs, he gave me the dreaded words, “You need to go to the hospital.” So here I sat, in the loneliest place I have ever been. After twelve days with COVID-19, I was not improving. I had pneumonia and because my oxygen levels were dropping, I was, for the first time in my life, experiencing an extended hospital stay. After being sick for several weeks, you begin to wonder if you will ever feel good again. Not being able to taste food, you wonder if food will ever taste good again. Alone and depressed, my only contact with the outside world was my iPad® and phone. Yes, it was like a descent into Dante’s hell. Then a couple of things happened, and I began to see shafts of the uncreated light and caught a glimmer of hope. On my third day in the hospital, I had canned peaches for breakfast. For the first time in over

30

three weeks, I tasted food — a canned peach — and it was the best thing I’ve ever tasted. Then I tasted the cold omelet and it was not so good, but I could taste it! I will tell you this: if you haven’t tasted food in three weeks, hospital food might be delicious. After that I ate — no, devoured — every meal like a starving man. After five days in the hospital, my oxygen level began to rise and with it, hope. I could tell I was better because a simple trip to the restroom didn’t leave me breathless and panting for air. Another couple of days and I was home. I have never been more thankful! I told my wife that I only wanted two things. The first was to shower and brush my teeth with my sonic toothbrush. (I hadn’t showered the whole time because of monitors and IV lines.) I brushed my teeth until my toothbrush ran out of batteries and showered until we were out of hot water. The second thing I wanted, since I could finally taste again, was something aged in a barrel. I write all this to say: it is hard to live with a thankful heart. We live in an age of entitlement, where our

nov e m be r/de c em be r 2021

first-world problems rob us of joy and gratitude to such a degree that we end up living on the verge of hostility. As we enter into a festival season that begins with Thanksgiving Day and then moves into the season of Christmas joy, culminating in the best news of God becoming incarnate, this is a good time to think about cultivating the habit of thankfulness. I say habit because thankfulness is an intentional way of seeing, is it not? I learned this afresh during and after my bout with COVID-19. I learned to slow down and really see and experience the grace and wonder of life in the mundane. Life where canned peaches are a vision of glory – an indicator that I live indebted to a generous God who dispenses his gifts freely, whether I see them or not. May God give us eyes to see during this Advent season and thus live with expectation and gratitude!

Meet Frenchie

Hi, my name is Frenchie! To be accurate, my full name is French Toast, but I answer to Frenchie! My story begins when a kind human found me and took me into her home. She complimented me for never missing the litter box and not scratching her furniture. But, between you and me, her dog scared me. After a few weeks, she realized that I would be much happier in a forever home without any dogs. So she brought me to the Collierville Animal Shelter for a new chance! The shelter is a great place to be a cat. They feed me, play with me and love me. When I arrived, I had some dental issues, but they took me to the vet and now I’m good as new! But it’s not my forever home. So I’m here today, hoping you have the home for me! Could I be your new best friend? I’m a small, grey-and-white, five-year-old girl. To be honest, I’m not big on being picked up, but other than that, I’m very affectionate and love to be petted while cuddling. I’m so well-behaved that I get to spend the day outside of a kennel, roaming and checking on the other cats. I like to think of myself as an unofficial shelter assistant. They can use the help because the shelter has over fifty cats and kittens looking for forever homes right now! Some of us who are a little older are worried we’re going to be overlooked, so I want to put in a good word. Kittens are awesome, but here are some things to think about in case an older cat makes sense for you:

• • • • • • •

We are already litter-trained. You see what you get in terms of size and temperament. We are more relaxed. We sense that you rescued us, so we tend to have grateful personalities. Our kitten teeth are gone. We’re world-wise, so generally don’t get into as much curiosity-based mischief. We still have so much love to give!

You get all that plus a fun personality, soft fur and a cat that will share each day with you and scamper to the door, so excited to see you every time you come home! If you think a good girl who doesn’t scratch furniture, never misses the litter box and is small, soft and loving would complete your life, please come meet me at the shelter! Ask for Frenchie! I’ll be here waiting!

XOXO,

Frenchie

Aren’t We Industrious? COLLIERVILLE’S IN DUSTRIAL PARTN ERS ARE IM PRESSIVE

I will use a bit of literary license with the word industrious, as we explore the rapidly-emerging and impressive industrial market in Collierville. It seems that our citizens are often more interested in the next burger joint or pizza parlor — which is very important, mind you — versus the development of our industrial partners, typically located in the southeast quadrant of our community. However, put on your steel toe shoes, hard hat, goggles and ear plugs, and let’s take a walk. In 1967, Collierville had approximately 3,500 residents. Can you imagine? That was the year that Carrier Corporation©, now one of the largest air-conditioning unit manufacturers in the world, began their investment in Collierville. Today, they have a 900,000 square foot manufacturing facility

on Byhalia, employing anywhere from 1200 to 1800 workers, which was a 2011 Industry Week magazine “Best Plants in America” award winner. With an annual payroll approaching $70,000,000, this producer of the Carrier and Bryant-brand HVAC units continues to thrive. Canada-based CCL Industries © is one of the largest label printers in the world. With 154 manufacturing facilities worldwide, CCL produces printed labels for the healthcare, consumer products and industrial markets — for example, the labels on your energy drink, the information labeling system attached to a pharmaceutical product or the label of your favorite weed-killer. It’s high-end, high-tech and environmentally-friendly printing, and Collierville is blessed to have two

With close to 200,000 square feet of production space and room to grow, CCL currently employs over 300 skilled machine operators, press technicians, warehousemen and customer service personnel. IPS ® Corporation currently has two manufacturing plants in Collierville, both located off of US 72, just north of SR-385. Occupying 215,000 square feet of manufacturing and assembly space, IPS® employs around 130 people, who are tasked with producing supply boxes, plumbing products, valves, waste and overflow products, drains, access panels and even more — all for the IPS ® Plumbing Products Division. You learn something new every day, right? IPS ® is a market leader, and we are proud that they have fully invested in our community. Time and space here does not allow me to touch on AmericanMarsh Pumps©, Floratine ®, FedEx® Packaging, ChemStation® and Tuscan Iron Entries©, as they are all also valuable industrial partners. With over 300 acres of developable industrial land available and close proximity to the airport, Mississippi River, Norfolk Southern © Intermodal rail yard, FedEx® Ground Hub, the Memphis Regional Megasite and game-changing highway systems, our future as a strategic industrial location is super bright!

T

he Fischers have been slowly working on bits and pieces of their home at a time. Although they originally planned to redo their kitchen in 2020, the pandemic gave them pause. At the start of 2021, however, they decided to go ahead. “We ordered appliances the first week of January, and the tear out was in February,” said Diana Fischer. Diana knew a lot of what she wanted already, but was glad to have the team at Designer Wholesale to provide guidance as needed. For example, it was their team that recommended that the glass-fronted cabinets reach all the way to the ceiling, instead of stopping below. “It’s made a world of difference,” said Diana. She and her husband, Tommy, spoke highly of the entire team, particularly Mark, who made their cabinets and went, according to Tommy, “above and beyond.” Diana wasn’t interested in making the kitchen modern, but making sure that it flowed and matched the rest of their home. “We have a New Orleans courtyard style home, and it would feel wrong to have a very modern kitchen,” she explained. Designer Wholesale worked to incorporate similar paint colors, hardware, countertops and styles of trim and cabinets that made the kitchen feel new but familiar. They also installed new kitchen lighting, with a dimmer switch, to compensate for the natural light. In addition to the kitchen, the team refloored

all the hard wood from the laundry room to the living room, painted and replaced the light fixture over the dinette. One of the most unique features in their kitchen isn’t easily seen. There’s a drawer where the bottom is filled with holes and removable pegs. Why? So that anything can be stored in these drawers without rattling around! From pot lids to salad bowls to serving platters, these are custom-designed so that whatever you store stays in place the entire time. Another unique feature is the marble cutting boards located around the kitchen. Diana said, “When they were cutting the marble for the countertops, I asked them to shape whatever extra chunks they had into cutting boards.” This allows for a uniform look across the kitchen, as they blend into the counters, but also provides extra working surfaces for cooking and will protect the actual counters in the long run. When it comes to advice for others looking to renovate their homes, Diana has two recommendations. First, be as hands-on as possible. “I was blessed that we did this when I was working from home. It’s important to have a good working relationship and lots of conversations,” she said. Second, consider your home’s design. “Look at your house as a whole. Design is the most critical [aspect], so you want to keep color patterns and stuff like that,” she advised. This beautiful kitchen has been a long time in the making, and the Fischers are excited to start using it to its full potential!

REALTOR TIPS SELLING A HOME DURING THE HOLIDAYS

The holiday season is upon us, starting with Thanksgiving and ending with New Year’s Day. It is a time to spend with family and friends while reflecting on the past year and making plans for the new year. It is also a very busy time of the year, with so many family, work and social obligations going on at the same time. While most people don’t choose to sell their home this time of the year, I do frequently get asked if it is a good time to sell your home. While the busy season for real estate has come earlier and earlier the last few years, you would definitely say that by March, things are ramping up with a peak by Memorial Day. My advice over the years has usually been to list your home during this time. However, with the lack of inventory and the increased demand we have been experiencing in the real estate market, it has never been a better time

42

TOURCOLLIERVILLE.COM

if you find yourself needing to sell during the holiday season. Some of the advantages to selling your home this time of year are:

• Usually there are only serious buyers looking at this time. • There won’t be as much competition with other listings. • The holiday season offers a unique opportunity to showcase your home’s curb appeal with Christmas lights, etc. • The end of the year is a good time for new jobs and relocation. If you do decide to list your home during the holiday season, my recommendation is to embrace it and go with the flow. This time of the year is already stressful and selling your home will add to this stress, unless you make a

nov em be r/de c em be r 2021

conscious effort to have a good attitude. The good news is that the market is still strong and the days on the market for new listings are low. This should limit the worst part about selling your home, which is having it ready to show at a moment’s notice. It also means that even though the market has peaked for the year, the prices that homes are selling for are still at all-time highs. If you plan ahead, set realistic expectations, have a good attitude and embrace the overall chaos of selling a home during the holidays, it can be a great time to put your home on the market.
