EMPOWERING LIVES THROUGH MARTIAL ARTS KARATE | TAE KWON DO | KRAV MAGA | KICKBOXING Your child deserves confidence and self-respect. What if they had a physical outlet that reinforced these life-long character traits? Or — even better — a hobby that taught them to understand responsibility, mutual respect, kindness, and self-discipline? It’s possible, and they can even have fun while learning. That’s why we’re bringing Premier Martial Arts to Collierville.

BLENDED CLASSES Premier Martial Arts provides structure for your kids through a blended curriculum different from your typical studio. With heavy emphasis on character development, fitness and self-defense achievements are the cherries on top. Your child will become a well-rounded martial artist; but our goal is to better empower your child to grow strong in confidence, increase focus and concentration, and gain perseverance as lifelong tools for their future.

ADULT SELF-DEFENSE Not a gym person, either? Our adult classes are primarily focused on practical self-defense through Krav Maga, the official system of the Israeli Military and used by hundreds of law-enforcement agencies throughout the world, as well as Muay Thai Kickboxing.

PRESALE SPECIALS For a limited time, we are offering a free introductory, private lesson with an instructor where your child achieves a white belt to begin their journey. We are also offering deeply discounted initial rates for our founding members. Co-Owners Casey and Kevin Maidon are proud Colliervillians and eager to begin building the PMA community right here at home. Give us a call or visit our website for more information and to take advantage of our Grand Opening Specials.

THE RIGHT KIND OF

Sweet

DOGS ARE A REALLY BIG DEAL AROUND HERE! Daycare, Boarding & Spa www.dogtopia.com/carriage-crossing 901-443-1880

My name is Java, and everyone says I’m super sweet, but the kind of sweet that doesn’t give you cavities or make you hyper. I’m the kind that makes your heart warm, your life full, and puts a smile on your face. When I arrived at the shelter as a stray, I was lost, lonely, confused, and to be honest, a little untrained. It’s my nature to love humans and to want to be with them, so

“A DOG NEED NOT BE PUREBRED TO BE PURE OF HEART.” my first mistake was wagging my tail so hard against my kennel every time a human stopped by that I ended up with a raw tail that had to be bandaged. The humans call that injury “happy tail” and it might be happy, but boy, it stung for a bit! After I recovered from that rookie mistake, I started to settle into the routine. I learned that being calm when I was leashed got me out for my walk faster. I learned that my joy in simply sharing a walk could put a smile on a human face. I also learned that when we sit by the pond together, if I slip in close to a human and nudge them with my nose, I get cozy pets. I learned that nailing my ‘sit’ command earned me a delicious nugget called a ‘treat’! Everything about me has blossomed here and the humans say I’m ready for my forever home now. I’m a young female, 33-pound, hound-mix. I’m a good girl who loves to play, but not too hard. I love children, but my natural enthusiasm might be a bit much with little ones. I love my zoomies, but then I settle down and am generally calm. I’m a companion who would love to curl up at your feet and share evenings with you. We would have so much fun sharing walks together! I’m the kind of girl who can tell you with her soft, gentle eyes that you look great in that dress. The shelter humans say I spread happiness and create smiles just by being around. They also tell me that rubbing my velvet ear flappers can take away human stress. I’m a joyful companion that will make you laugh and warm your heart.

NEW

ADVENTURES

Await Have you been to Disney World lately? If not, you will find A LOT of new things to explore! From little changes like menu updates at restaurants, to bigger changes like completely re-theming an attraction or hotel, Disney is always working on something! Perhaps the biggest change to Disney Resorts can be found at the new Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Hotel. The concept of the hotel is completely new and is less of a “hotel” and more of a mix between a cruise, escape room, and murder mystery game. Guests visit for an immersive 2-night stay where they create and participate in their own Star Wars story interacting with characters and completing missions that directly impact the outcome of the bigger storyline. This is truly something far beyond anything Disney has ever created before. So as they say on the starcruiser… good journey and ta’bu e tay! (Hint: That means, “Cherish the moment.”)

OTHER CHANGES AT DISNEY Park Pass Reservations have changed the way that guests plan their Disney World vacation. Now, you’ll need to make a reservation for each park you plan to visit months in advance. Oh, and they can sell out. “Disney Enchantment” will be shifted to later performance times at 9:20pm. A brand new Interactive MagicBand arrived at Disney World this year. The “MagicBand+” takes the existing functionality of 16

TOURCOLLIERVILLE.COM

m a y/june 2022

MagicBands and turns it up a notch. When you enter a theme park, it will “come alive at various times with color-changing lights, haptic vibrations, and gesture recognition. A brand-new “Disney Adventure Friends Cavalcade” starring nearly 30 Disney & Pixar characters debuted in Magic Kingdom on February 11. Mickey’s Magical Friendship Faire returned to the Cinderella’s Castle stage on February 25! And finally, the International Flower & Garden Festival in EPCOT kicked off March 2 and will run until July 4, featuring a plethora of colorful blooms, good tunes, fragrant scents, and fresh flavors! Whether you’re a first-time visitor or you haven’t been back since Walt Disney World reopened – you will definitely see a lot has changed! Disney World is constantly evolving so that it’s magical each and every time you visit!

Upholding the Brand At a recent baby shower for my daughter, one of the young guests shared with me that he attended a rival high school and was a member of the marching band. In preparation for their annual clash with the Dragons, his band would rehearse the theme song from “Green Acres” as a way to jab at Collierville, whom they perceived as this “little old country school.” This wasn’t that long ago for him. Collierville, with the largest and most sophisticated high school in Tennessee… that Collierville? Collierville, with more National Merit Finalists when compared to any school in the region… that Collierville? Collierville, with its award-winning STEM and VoTech programs… that Collierville? Collierville, with ACT scores comparable to just about every private school in the region… that Collierville? You get my point, I hope, as I found his story amusing and certainly outdated. The Town spends quite a bit of brain power and manpower molding and crafting the brand that is Collierville. It is incumbent upon us to continue to promote the uniqueness of the brand and to educate others of the dynamics of that brand. You remember all the buzz about Amazon HQII back in 2017? Amazon was planning to expand out of

18

TOURCOLLIERVILLE.COM

m a y/june 2022

their Seattle, WA, HQ, creating a new, 500,000-squarefoot HQII, which would eventually accommodate 50,000 employees, a $5B economic development behemoth. Every economic development organization in the country dropped everything to focus on this gargantuan opportunity, including Collierville. Our motivation was a bit different, I think, when compared to most. I read with great interest some of the comments from the “power brokers” in Memphis who

said, and I paraphrase, “Memphis will not land HQII, but if it did, the ONLY logical location would be somewhere downtown.” Really? First of all, Collierville already had the closest thing to HQII in our community in the FedEx World Technology Center; no one else was even close. As you know, FedEx WTC is 1.2 million square feet of office space housing 2,500 high-tech employees. A mini HQII, if you will. Second, Amazon HQII required a 100-acre site with infrastructure (utilities & roads). Collierville was in a position to submit not only one prime site that met Amazon’s needs, but two! Once again, regionally, no one else could touch that. Realistically, from a macro-perspective, I knew the Memphis market would be somewhat reaching to land Amazon, but this project gave me an opportunity to promote our community assets to a wider audience. Mission accomplished! I’ve heard it all when it comes to what Collierville is and what Collierville can do, and typically, the descriptions are inaccurate. So, promote and educate. After we landed the $21mm Orgill headquarters, with 380 jobs, I was told by a consultant it was a “once-in-alifetime” win for Collierville. That was early 2016. Since then, CCL Label has made a $25mm investment in our Town… Mueller Industries a $15mm investment… and most recently, IMC Companies invested $25mm. $65,000,000 in capital investments in our Town, with over 400 jobs since we were advised we were done. I have lost count of how many times I have heard, “I had no idea all of this was in Collierville” or “Collierville is first class.” Yes!! We will continue to passionately and vigorously promote and educate, as the audience is far and wide and the competition is fierce. But at the end of the day, we control the messaging, we control the narrative, and the brand is as strong as it’s ever been. #ColliervilleStrong

WALK

IN

Wisdom

You made it! Do not underestimate the achievement you just unlocked. Your future is on the horizon, filled with opportunities. As you step into this next phase of life, do so with excitement and wisdom. Who do you want to be? Where do you want to go? What do you want to do? These questions are at the core of who we are. Moving forward, the decisions you make will determine the course of your life. Will you walk in wisdom? Wisdom is surrounding yourself with the right voices. We allow too many negative and empty voices to speak into our lives. When we give them too much weight, they can leave us feeling anxious and uncertain. In the moments when you feel overwhelmed, remember that God has spoken. The voice of God is the Word of God that He has given us in Scripture. Proverbs 4:2027 describes the process of walking in wisdom, and it begins by encouraging us to fill our hearts with the Word of God. You can trust His voice. “For they bring life to those who find them” (Pro. 4:22, NLT). Surround yourself with the right voices. Wisdom is guarding your heart with the right mentality. I have seen too many people defeated in life by the wrong mentality. For some, it is a performance mentality that tells them if they are not achieving or

20

TOURCOLLIERVILLE.COM

m a y/june 2022

seeing results, then they have no value. For others, the trap is pride; they always believe that they are right and never look for advice from others. The Bible says, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life” (Pro. 4:23, NLT). Guarding your heart means asking God to confront your mentality and being humble enough to admit when you’re wrong. Seek out the advice of others. Find your value in Jesus. A humble mentality is what God desires, and it will take you far in life. You can trust God. He already demonstrated His love for us by sending Jesus to die for our sins and failures. He didn’t stay dead; He rose from the grave and offers us life in His name. So, who do you want to be? What do you want to do? Wisdom is the pursuit of something greater than just us. As you face this new horizon, walk wisely and step bravely. Your adventure awaits.

ACKNOWLEDGING

Business Excellence

The Town of Collierville is honored to celebrate two winners of the 2021 Excellence in Business Awards presented by the Collierville Chamber of Commerce. Town Administrator, James Lewellen, was named “Person of the Year'' and the Collierville Police Department received the inaugural “Bridging the Gap'' award. James Lewellen has served as Town Administrator for 26 years, building a long list of accomplishments under his leadership. From developing the Town’s first Comprehensive Land Use Plan to overseeing historic preservation projects, growing park amenities, and more, James has touched almost every part of Collierville as seen today. The Person of the Year award came just in time, as James plans to retire in summer 2022. The Collierville Police Department was awarded the “Bridging the Gap” recognition, an exclusive achievement designed to honor an admirable organization that went above and beyond to serve its community. Police Chief, Dale Lane, accepted the award on behalf of everyone who responded to the September 23rd tragedy including the Town’s Fire Department, Administration, and the community members who rallied together to create #ColliervilleStrong. After a challenging year, the Town was humbled to receive the special recognition from the Collierville Chamber of Commerce and thankful for an evening to celebrate with the community’s business leaders. Main & Mulberry: Sessions A Local Music Series

24

TOURCOLLIERVILLE.COM

Tale of Two

R

iding into Town Square, you might see a classic Camaro fueling up at the old school pump. A toddler stumbling down the sidewalk, jeans tucked into their new Hewlett & Dunn cowboy boots. A lawyer in a suit walking back to their office from the courthouse; maybe even Collierville high schoolers on a date outside Raven and Lily. Our Square is the embodiment of what we refer to as ‘Main & Mulberry’—a little slice of the South where inevitable growth and modernism is met with charming smalltown ambience.

“IT’S A COOL, UNIQUE SPACE FOR ARTISTS TO RECORD AND PUBLISH INTIMATE, ACOUSTIC COVERS AND ORIGINAL SONGS.” - Nicholas Cotros

As both students of their influences and masters at weaving originality into their craft, artists understand this juxtaposition better than most. Some would say it’s their intention. So, it’s only fitting you could also see a local musician shutting their trunk and lugging their gear up the sidewalk to Tour Collierville. Saloon doors greet you when stepping inside the all-wooden, shotgun style suite. Push past them and an original, 1885

Orgill Brothers & Co. bank safe occupies a corner of the room as it has for as long as anyone can remember—just another Collierville nod to its old-school charm. A walk down a meandering hall brings you to a recording studio in the back. Main & Mulberry: Sessions are recorded here. “It’s a cool, unique space for artists to record and publish intimate, acoustic covers and original songs,” shares Nicholas Cotros, who films and edits all the in-studio recordings. Perhaps now more than ever, it’s possible for musicians to break-through without a big record label. Just as you can discover your new favorite band through a portable speaker from the tent next to you at Fair on the Square, an artist can make their break by an iPhone video uploaded to YouTube. And maybe those are the artists we want to hear the most. That’s why we created Sessions. What began as an unplugged Christmas cover from local musician Adam Miles, filmed on the Square in 2019 and posted to our Facebook page, turned into 62 Sessions episodes featuring over 25 local musicians. So far. “Growing from a small office space with one camera into our current studio and multi-camera, multi-channel audio setup has been a real journey,” says Matt Mages, the audio engineer behind-the-scenes. “We now have a very flexible setup to accommodate just about anything and we aim to make the recording process stress and pressure-free. The hardwood walls create a very nice, natural reverb that I think adds a special sonic character to the performances.” Along the journey, we’ve hit a few milestones. “After Bailey Bigger recorded with us, we gained a lot of credibility,” says Nicholas. From there it just continued to grow. “Johnny Maestro’s ‘Heartless Valentine’ was a big milestone for us, as well as the artists. It has over 10,000 views. We knew we were doing something special then,” shares Matt. “I remember messaging Abby Frances to tell her that ‘Leave Me

Abby Frances

in the Dust’ hit 10,000 views, and she was so surprised and grateful. It has over 12k now and that’s huge for an original song by a local artist!” Of course, the best thing about hosting local artists is that they are, well, local. Musicians might not need a big label anymore to gain a following, but that doesn’t necessarily make their path to the big stage easier. I asked Nicholas his favorite thing about recording the music series. He said, “It’s comforting to think that we may have contributed to a local, small-town artist’s success.” Like our local businesses, local musicians need our support, too. We’re just glad to play a part. Our music series features cover songs, originals, and interviews from local artists looking for their big break or just stopping by our iconic Town Square to share their talent. We’ve recorded blues artists, former American Idol contestants, jazz musicians, and local folks who can play and sing with the best. Starting on June 9 from 7:00-9:00pm, Main Street Collierville will kick off their annual Summer Concert Series, a 22-year-old tradition that will draw more than 5,000 people to five concerts between June and October. Town staff is busy putting the final plans in place for Collierville’s annual Independence Day Celebration in H.W. Cox Park on Saturday, July 2, 2022 (rain date is July 4). Collierville’s Independence Day Celebration is a signature community event drawing an estimated 20,000 people to the largest firework demonstration in the Mid-South with great music and food trucks. These events are not only fun to attend, but they contribute to the feeling of community and small-town charm for which Collierville is known. For tourism, these events are at the core of our work as we seek to enhance the quality of life and quality of visit for our guests, to drive economic activity, and support the recruitment and retention of business and families. I hope you can join us on Town Square this summer.

HOME TOUR PRESENTED BY: DESIGNER WHOLESALE

J

ack and Jimmye Nan Ramsey have been living in their home for nearly 45 years. Having recently settled into the joys of retirement, they found themselves looking for a new project. Multiple spaces needed updating in their home, so the Ramseys decided to remodel the kitchen and laundry room, paint the den and living room, and add new flooring throughout. In an effort to create a more open concept, the Ramseys created a large wood case opening between the living room and kitchen. “We wanted things to flow, and our family and guests to move easily between the rooms,” shared Jack. “And the wood beam we used in the opening matched the wood into our entrance and balcony.” Replacing the floors with a luxury vinyl wood plank added both texture and warmth to the home. Kitchen walls were painted in ‘Dover White’ and a clean ‘Glossy Modern White’ tile backsplash completed the refinished look. The metal vent-a-hood and gas stovetop provide sleek touches to this warm and inviting space. Ample upper and lower cabinets in ‘Ever Classic’ stain complete the kitchen and achieve one of the Ramsey’s goals of creating more storage in their home. The large kitchen island is a focal point for the room with base color ‘Grey Matters’ and two pendant lights hanging overhead. The island has an undermount sink and gorgeous quartz site Bianca Supreme countertops throughout the kitchen.

wooden cabinet doors mixed with smaller upper cabinets, and open shelving in ‘Ever Classic’ stain, offering the perfect solution for storage and organization. “Stephen [Designer Wholesale] spent a lot of time on our conceptual design; understanding what we wanted and getting everything we wanted on paper. The team followed that design to the tee. We are very pleased with how everything turned out,” shared Jack. With newly remodeled rooms better suited to fit their needs, the Ramseys are prepared and excited to host good memories with their family and friends for years to come. story | ANNA BELL

Adjacent to the island is an eat-in kitchen with a unique wood pendant lighting overhead a gorgeous custom millwork dining table. Designer Millworx built the live oak table for the Ramseys with family gatherings in mind. “We have eleven in our family right now, with five grandkids. We wanted a table that could seat eight, maybe ten at the table, and have four chairs at the island, so we could all be together in the same place and there was room for everybody,” said Jack. Custom live edge, wood benches serve as head of the table seating on either end of the table. Another wood element that stands out in the kitchen are the wooden floating shelves above the breakfast room cabinets, also painted in ‘Grey Matters.’ In the hall leading to the laundry room, new sliding wood barn doors offer accessible entrance to the storage room and hall bath. The Ramseys asked that their laundry room renovations focus around supplying ample storage and organization. Tall,

REALTOR TIPS EXTRA ROOM

Do you have a graduating senior in high school or college this year? If so, you’re being reminded about change on a daily basis. Change in our lives is inevitable just as fall transitions to winter then to spring and summer. As we enter these transitional periods in our lives, it can also facilitate the need to reassess our real estate needs. If you have a graduating senior, you also might be looking at becoming an empty-nester. While this comes with all kinds of emotional challenges (go on and grab a tissue), it also comes with the stark reality that maybe you don’t need all this extra space. Most go through the thought process of downsizing when they reach this phase in their life, but have a tough time actually doing it. While they agree they don’t need the extra room, it can be difficult to find something and feel confident enough to part with the space you already have. It has been my experience that when looking to move from the typical 4,500-square-foot home with 5 bedrooms to a smaller home, it takes around 3,200 square feet, minimum, to have a kitchen, master bedroom, bath, and living area to be comfortable giving up your larger home.

40

TOURCOLLIERVILLE.COM

m a y /june 2022

Being an empty-nester is just one example of the changes in our lives that can bring on a need or desire to change our current real estate needs. Times of change can also bring on a lot of stress, so if you are going through a transitional period in your life right now and considering a move, the smartest thing you can do is contact a real estate professional you know and trust.
