H

aving now completed Season 2 of Her Town (with 30+ episodes on Main and Mulberry’s YouTube channel), it’s the perfect time to reflect on a few stand-out episodes that truly inspired me.

A PODCAST ABOUT WOMEN WHO INSPIRE

“How do you find the energy to fill your own cup?” Ellen replied, “I think prayer. Usually, if you come in my house, you’ll find me on my knees because I’m just worn out and tired. It’s just a constant, ‘Okay, Lord. Keep me focused.’ It’s not so much motivation to be productive, it’s more of a discipline. And you’ve got to just get up and fulfill the duties you have been blessed with… everything is a blessing, if we look at it through the right lens.” Ellen’s words still inspire me to keep faith on the hard days.

Faith Moves Mountains When I first cut my teeth in podcasting, I was so thankful Collierville native Ellen Humerickhouse was my first guest. I went into that conversation like an interview, 50 questions printed up and ready to read off one-by-one, but that format quickly went out the window. Authentic conversation is what we strive for at Main and Mulberry, and Ellen Humerickhouse is as genuine as they come. Ellen runs La Limyé, a children’s home for orphaned girls in Haiti. As we were talking about the complexities of parenthood, I asked, 12

Overcoming Tragedy It is in the darkest hour that our true character shows, and when Marianne Dunavant’s fiancé was tragically murdered, she decided to “give her pain a purpose.” Instead of ‘self-serving’ during her time of grief, Marianne became a Victim’s Rights Advocate, going into prisons to face her greatest anxieties. “Some people would say, ‘How could you go into a prison and talk to the inmates?’ And I said, ‘You can talk to people who are with you all day long, but that’s preaching to the choir.’ I saw an importance of going into the prisons and talking to the very people who were capable of breaking the law and even creating murder, because the reality is that 98% of [inmates] are coming back out. I needed to be in that Victim’s Impact Class to help them understand how their actions affected others.” Marianne goes on to share how rehabilitating a servant’s heart can be, and I still carry her words of “suffering well” and “giving pain a purpose” with me today.

Power of Positivity Gina Hollenbeck shared her story with us of her ongoing fight with lung cancer and the power of positivity. In peak physical health, Gina’s nursing intuition kicked in after having troubling symptoms that revealed her terminal illness. “I have a saying,” shared Gina, “‘Mud or Stars,’ and it comes from a book by Dale Carnegie. He says, ‘Two men look through the same prison bars. One sees mud and one sees stars.’ You can’t always control your situation, but you can control your focus. You can control whether you’re looking at the negative, the mud, or you’re looking at the stars. I think that holds true for everyone. Even in the deepest, darkest situations, there are stars… The choice is yours.” Gina’s words have been a guiding light in conversations with friends on how to keep perspective no matter the season.

Greatest Leaders Are Servants As Senior Vice President of Corporate Marketing, Laurie Tucker left a legacy of mentoring others during her 35 years at FedEx. Remember the verse, “To whom much is given, much will be required” (Luke 12:48)? “If you commit to being a mentor,” shares Laurie, “you’re committing to get to know that person and hear how that person is experiencing life. I love mentoring. And so you move from being a mentor to being a champion. I would be that person’s champion to help these young leaders think about their brand attributes and help them develop a better personal brand. That was one of my commitments and it still is to this day.” My conversation with Laurie was a reminder that after all these years of people pouring into our professional and personal cups, we’re also responsible to pass on our gifts to the benefit of those with whom we interact. It’s been an honor to listen to women from all walks of life, who authentically share the peaks and valleys of navigating their personal and professional careers on Her Town. I’ve learned there is no shortage of women passionately sharing their gifts with their communities. These stories are just the tip of the inspirational iceberg that make up the first two seasons of Main and Mulberry: Her Town. Join us on any podcast platform and keep an eye out for Season 3! Building Blocks FOR

A

SOLID

Weddings and honeymoons are incredible times in our lives! You probably guessed that as a pastor, I believe in the value of pre-marital counseling. Yet did you know that the State of Tennessee does, too? So much so, they will grant you a $60 discount on your almost $100 marriage license if you attend at least four hours with a professional. See here for details: http://www.tncountyclerk.com/ forms/Marriage_Counseling.pdf Another of my goals would be to give you a number of tools to help increase the probability of a solid marriage that will weather the storms of life for decades to come. First, reflect upon your past to move stronger into the future. How has marriage been modeled for you? How did your parents or adults in your life communicate? How did they deal with conflict? What are traditions or parts of family life that you wish to continue and what are aspects that you do not want to repeat? Secondly, turn to the present and future by looking at items that you should already be talking about before the big day. Recognize some of these items may not be issues right now, yet they are the classic items that can trip up a marriage in the future.

MARRIAG E • Recreation. What

hobbies do you have together

and separately?

• Friends.

Yours, mine, and “ours”? How do we balance this time?

• Sex.

Yes, it is good and healthy to talk about it; past, present, and future.

• Life Goals. Do we have similar goals for 5, 10, and 50 years down the road? Children? Retirement?

• Religion. Yours,

mine, or “ours”? How will we live out our faith and spiritual life together?

Awareness of these potential issues can give you more confidence to move forward if they should arise in the future. Remember that these conversations are normal and can be worked through either on our own, or with help from a trusted pastor, priest, or counselor. Good communication in a marriage is key to working through any issue that might come your way. Congratulations, and happy journeying together!

• Family. What are the dynamics with each other’s families? And how will we decide things like: where will we spend Christmas?

• Finances.

Joint account? How do we make big dollar decisions?

DOGS ARE A REALLY BIG DEAL AROUND HERE! Daycare, Boarding & Spa www.dogtopia.com/carriage-crossing 901-443-1880

Hi! My name is Whitney and I’m a one-year-old, black female cat living at the Collierville Animal Shelter. Like most of us here, I was found as a stray, but even though many of us share a similar history, we are each unique in our own special way. Cats all have different colors and looks, but most of us here have no specific breed, so we’re classified as DSH (domestic short hair) and identified by our color. People who have a lot of experience with cats (like the volunteers here!) will tell you there is no scientific evidence to tie a cat’s color to a personality type, but in many cases it can prove to be a good indicator.

“You’ll love the feel of my soft, velvet fur You’ll love the sound of my rumbling purr Once I have loved you, you’ll never look back I’m the reason for this… I’m a black cat!” So in spite of our reputation as shy, calm, and sweet, did you know that black cats spend twice as long waiting to find their forever family? Some humans have strange superstitions about us, and others consider our color as ‘ordinary’. I can’t address human superstitions, but… ‘ordinary’? For the record, just last week one of the humans here picked me up and whispered in my ear that my striking green eyes and my velvety, black fur made me sooo beautiful. Compliments like that mean everything to a girl like me, waiting for my forever home. When I think about my forever family and where I might fit best, I picture a place where we both love comfort. If my humans have a stressful day, or don’t feel well, or even find themselves just feeling a little down, I want to comfort them and be the companion that brings love to their life. I love to snuggle on a big fluffy bed. I’m super laid-back, and love to be scratched under my chin. When humans do that, I just close my eyes and relax in perfect contentment. I’m a quiet kitty who loves to watch. Even when the kittens play and chase each other here, I stay on my bed and just enjoy the show. I would love to share that warmth and contentment with my humans. Are you looking for a soft, gentle and loving, one-yearold lady to share your warm blanket with on a cool night? Or a snuggle buddy to binge-watch Netflix with? I’m right here at the Collierville Animal Shelter waiting for you. Fill out an application and the shelter humans will set up a time for us to meet.

Who is Collierville? Collierville is the second oldest town in Shelby County and was incorporated in 1870; built around the cotton, dairy, and manufacturing industries. We have come quite a ways since 1870, when our population was 275, to the dynamic community of over 52,000 we are today. If you were to poll our citizens, visitors, local business community, and Memphians, the answers to the questions of “What and Who is Collierville” would be many and varied.

A POWER SUBURB? While I don’t prefer the definition, to the uninitiated, Collierville is a suburb of Memphis. Collierville is an independent town, with its own school, water, sewer, police, fire, government, and infrastructure systems. We are a town that sits in close proximity to a major metropolitan area in Memphis, thus the suburban moniker. If I need to describe our community to an outsider, and need to help them fully understand who and what we are, I have been known to refer to us as a power suburb. A power suburb is defined as a growth-oriented, diverse economy with elevated assets, superior location, and thriving community. Not all towns, municipalities, cities, regions, or areas can make such a claim. Carmel, IN, Richardson, TX, Chesterfield, MO, Overland Park, KS, and Naperville, IL, for example, can all

20

TOURCOLLIERVILLE.COM

m a rc h/a pril 20 22

utilize the power suburb definition, as it does describe a unique level of independence and success.

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME. At the end of the day, we are a family town. Our strategic growth and success has been built around our families. People want to live here and send their kids to school here, worship here… residents want their kids and friends to live here. And it’s all because Collierville is a safe, thriving, wellorganized, accessible, and special place. From the largest and most sophisticated high school in TN to the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony; our 20 miles of trails to our beautiful and awardwinning Town Square; our Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer golf courses to our mixed-use assets in Schilling Farms and Carriage Crossing; Collierville has something for everyone. All that we are, and all that we will continue to be, caters to and is desired by families. So, what is Collierville? The definitions and descriptions are many and varied, but for me, it’s my home, and for that I am grateful and blessed.

All in the DETAILS

ooking back on your wedding day, memories come back to you in a million little moments like toasting drinks with your bridesmaids and groomsmen, tying your tie or slipping into your heels, sharing your vows or Uncle Al ‘cutting a rug’ on the dance floor. That’s why you work so hard during the preparation phase choosing the color of the napkins, calligraphy on the invitations, and the menu served to your guests. At the end of the day, the essence of what is ‘your wedding day’ is wrapped up in all the little details, and those details matter. The saying ‘Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue’ seems like a perfect way to remember the little things when it comes to celebrating your love story. So how can you uniquely remember the past with something old? Perhaps you celebrate the past with a piece of jewelry or cuff links passed down through generations for the bride or groom to wear. You could collect old photos of family on both the bride and groom's side to celebrate families uniting, past and present. Maybe you still have your great grandmother’s sofa that can be used as seating in a photo booth or during a cocktail hour. Or consider remembering past dates, creatively showcasing them for your friends to see during the reception! There are so many ways to incorporate the love of the past into this special day of your life.

It’s easy to embrace something new as you start this amazing new journey together! Consider having your vows printed on canvas to hang in your new home. On your wedding day, give a gift that represents your appreciation for your significant other or start a new tradition on your wedding day to continue on each anniversary! Equally important, something borrowed should be a sentimental token incorporated into the day. Fabric from a relative’s gown could be used to hold your flower bouquet, or an embroidered pillow of a friend could be used to carry the rings. Getting married during the colder months? Borrow a chic cape to wear leaving the reception! Adding something blue is a beautiful way to add color to your wedding day! Did you know the color blue represents “fidelity and love’s purity” according to this famous rhyme? A handkerchief with blue monogram, or a sapphire piece of jewelry could be used to really spruce up your attire. Consider a blue garter or getaway car to make a statement! Tour Collierville has the privilege of sharing several local weddings with you in the following pages that personify a day full of intimate little moments, adding up to a day you’ll never forget. Enjoy the planning and preparation phase, but even more, enjoy noticing the love in all the little details! We wish all of our newlyweds much love, laughter, and a happily ever after!

Rehearsal Dinner

Glam S

pring is the ultimate bridal season, and there are a handful of events that a bride must get ready for. One of the top nights besides the day of nuptials: the rehearsal dinner. The rehearsal is the lead up to the big day, so matching the style to your wedding is essential. Here are three ways you can set the tone and ring in the wedding bells!

Keep it Short + Sweet An intimate, small wedding can be the best of times, and keeping it “short + sweet” allows for a breath of fresh air. Stick with the simplicity in a clean mini dress! Pair it with pearl studs and white pointed heels for a simple look or glam it up with a statement earring and clear or gold heels. Bonus: throw it in your suitcase for a sweet honeymoon look!

Color Your Way White has been the staple uniform for brides everywhere. For the not-so-classic brides – go for a sweet color. This dress name says it all: ‘Making Memories Midi Dress’ with a fun printed style to dance the night away in. Encouraging color for any bride allows for a fun twist to an already exciting day. Blush, rose, Cinderella blue, lilac – all gorgeous options for the night before. Adding a simple nude lip, vintage earrings, or maybe even a glamorous brooch would be icing on the (wedding) cake.

Steal the Night Away Go big or go home, ladies! A full glam, floor-length gown is a way to go out with a bang. Find a dramatic element with a flowing train or a gorgeous shoulder detail that can steal the show. Create an elegant updo and find that perfect statement shoe to tie it all in. It’s your day to be as fashionable as you want!

No matter how you set the stage, feeling your best the night before makes all the difference. Remember to stay true to the aesthetic of the wedding – whether that means going for a classic white, a full length gown, a lace short romper, or a little black dress, you’ll have a twinkle in everyone’s eye! Celebrate it your way, your style. Congrats to all you gorgeous brides!

HOME TOUR PRESENTED BY: DESIGNER WHOLESALE

T

he Kuhlmanns moved to Collierville in 1994 and have slowly renovated portions of their home over time, starting outside. Their backyard patio was completed in 2020, installing brick stairs with custom railing leading to two round patios used for grilling and a gazebo. Brick paths were also installed between the patios, and so was a ramp to the garage door. “I asked for the walkway into the garage to be a ramp because I was thinking ahead about aging in place,” remarked Donna. “If one day I ever needed a walker or something, I could use that entrance.” Full view sliding glass doors and new flooring were also done during the first phase of refurbishing their home. “We had worked with Capital Construction before with our patio and balcony,” shared Donna. So in June 2021, Donna and Keith decided it was time to be proactive once more and redo their kitchen to make it a more functional space. “It was time to change the design,” shared Donna. “I always liked the clean lines and uncluttered, open spaces of a Euro-designed kitchen. We kept the same footprint as before, but it has a much more open feeling now.” Before the redesign of the Kuhlmann’s kitchen, from floor to ceiling most everything was builder grade. “It was just awful,” remembers Donna. Every inch of space was used in the redesign to incorporate Donna’s Euro-design elements, along with personal touches!

“My favorite place to be is the baking center,” Donna enthusiastically shared. “We installed floating shelves for my cookbooks, and my baking supplies are all where I can reach them. Now I can leave my heavy stand mixer on the counter and not have to pull it out from the bottom cabinet! And right next to it is a tall pantry that houses spices, all at my fingertips.” Converting the old cooktop to a new gas range was an important upgrade for Donna, along with new sintered stone countertops (Dekton) and subway tile backsplash. Donna chose a newer grout on the market made by Bostik called ‘Dimension’ that is said to not stain like grout commonly does, and has a metallic look. A new Sub Zero sink is mounted flush with the countertop, helping to accomplish that clean Euro-design. Gorgeous semiopaque window pantry and designated bookcase also help to maximize kitchen storage. Between the bar counter space and beautiful six-person table, the Kuhlmann’s newly remodeled kitchen is designed to easily prepare meals and entertain both grandkids and guests. The entire project took roughly seven months to complete. “Capital Construction did an amazing job,” remarked Donna reflecting on her renovations. “I can’t wait until my next renovation with their company.” Until then, the Kuhlmann’s plan to enjoy their newly designed kitchen space.

REALTOR TIPS BUYING YOUR FIRST HOME

One of the biggest questions facing a newly married couple usually doesn’t have anything to do with the wedding day itself, but rather where will we live after? Will we rent a home or apartment? Will we purchase a home? There are a lot of factors that go into making this decision and it is not to be taken lightly, as buying a home is one of the largest financial transactions you will make in your life.

• Will you be living in the area more than 1-2 years? • Are you financially capable? • Are you committed to a lease? If you feel like you are ready, there are still some hurdles to overcome, like the lack of inventory of available homes. Trying to compete for a home right now can be a daunting task for anyone. I would recommend seeking the advice and help of a licensed REALTOR® who can be your guide through this process. Once you find the right home, it might take a little creativity to make your offer more appealing to a seller, who will probably have multiple offers to choose from – potentially even all cash. If you are not married yet,

44

TOURCOLLIERVILLE.COM

m a rc h/a pril 2022

you may have the ability to be flexible with an extended closing date, which might even the playing field with a stronger buyer. If you are a first time home buyer and don’t have enough saved for a down payment for a conventional loan there are other options available. The FHA loan limit has been increased to $420,680 and will allow down payments as low as 3.5%. If you are a veteran and have your VA eligibility the VA loan is a great option with 0% down. It is easy these days to get discouraged when looking for a home, but it is well worth the wait if you can get it done. There is no better way to plan for your future family’s financial stability than owning a home. You won’t be subject to rent increases every time your lease renews and with historically low interest rates, you really have a great opportunity to keep the cost of your mortgage down. While owning isn’t for everyone, if you are able, it is a great opportunity to grow your net worth and create financial stability.
