LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Shannon Essary

“Home is not a place... It’s a feeling.” -Cecelia Ahern Collierville real estate is booming. New homes, renovations, redesigns, add-ons, you name it… Collierville is the HGTV dream. As we think of Collierville as a small town, that’s mostly about a community mentality. In terms of geographic footprint, our town has a total of over 688m+ square feet, and some of the nicest homes in Shelby County. We started our Square Feet section of the magazine in mid-2018 to highlight current trends and provide a small window into Collierville’s real estate market. As this section has grown in popularity, and the real estate market has gotten even hotter, we’re doubling down by featuring Square Feet in this issue. In the pages that follow, we take you on a tour of a gorgeous, newlybuilt home in the Historic District, and dive into the deep-end of a local celebrity’s outdoor oasis. Following this with articles like a DIY project, insights into an interesting emerging Collierville demographic, and expert advice on the value of renovations, this issue is a worthy binge-read. But wait… of course there’s more. Summer is now in full swing, and along with it, we’ve included articles from town contributors ranging from summer styles to how to keep the bugs away. At the end of the day, it may seem the face of Collierville is changing – and it may be. But it’s only booming because of our small town charm and that’s about us – the people of Collierville and our community focus. Outdoor kitchens and shiplap may continue to dress our square feet, but it’s us that turns these houses into homes. Now, as my grandmother always says when we pull into the driveway: “Home again, home again, jiggety-jig.”

MEET KAREN. GENERAL MANAGER ROADSHOW BMW & ROADSHOW MINI

My name is Karen Lombardo. I have been the General Manager at Roadshow BMW and Roadshow MINI for almost two years... and I am a proud Collierville resident!

owned business. We have been owned by the same family for almost 35 years. We employ over 115 full-time employees who live in the Greater Memphis area.

Larry and I moved to Memphis in 2017 when I was offered my position at the dealership. We decided to build our new home here after falling in love with everything Collierville has to offer. The thing I love the most about our new town is the pride that I can sense in all of you, its residents … and the way the folks who live in Collierville support local businesses so strongly!

At the heart of our beliefs about the automotive business is our strong opinion that customers should have the privilege of doing business where their business matters. So, in January 2019, we launched our Roadshow Gives Back program. We are supporting a different local charitable organization or nonprofit each month in 2019 and plan to continue this program in the future. So far this year we have worked with the following organizations, all of which have received a $6,000 donation from us:

I know you have a lot of options when it comes to your automotive needs, so I wanted to take a few minutes to tell you about us. Roadshow BMW and Roadshow MINI are located at the corner of Germantown Parkway and Walnut Grove Road. We serve Memphis and the entire mid-south. We are a small, privately

I look forward to meeting more of my Collierville neighbors over the coming months. I hope you’ll consider Roadshow BMW and Roadshow MINI the next time you are ready to purchase a new or used vehicle. I assure you that when you do business with Roadshow, your business matters.

HAND CUT ALL-NATURAL Enjoy authentic New Orleans cuisine without having to drive across the Pontchartrain! Owner and chef Chris Hughes and wife, Jennifer, have spent the last three years bringing their passion for good food and highquality meats to the Collierville community in their brick and mortar store, Thomas Meat & Seafood Market & Catering. Originally opened in 2011 by previous owners, the Hughes formed Hughes, LLC in July of 2016 and purchased the Thomas Meat & Seafood Market we all know and love today. Chris’ fervor towards premium cuisine is deeply rooted in a long family history of butchers and cooks. A family friend was a mentor to Chris, teaching him many tricks of the trade and his cookbook, which specialized in cooking large batches for large crowds, was also an instrumental teaching tool for Chris. The Hughes are thrilled to carry on the tradition of supplying the best cuts of meat and freshest seafood in the area! Since owning the store, Chris has spent countless hours furthering his culinary education by developing new techniques and foods to showcase.

FRESH & LOCAL

Walk in the store to an amazing aroma of seasonings from one of the largest commercial kitchens in the area, while browsing the large retail area up front. Don’t be surprised when Chris comes from behind the counter to greet you, and share cooking secrets in hopes of making your next meal the best one yet! Enjoy a fantastic plate lunch Monday through Friday from the 2018 Memphis Most “Best Meat Market” and “Best Caterer” winner! Pick up a delicious prepared meal for the family, ranging from crawfish pies to eggplant parmesan! Known by many for their authentic NOLA cuisine, don’t miss out on their red beans and rice, crawfish étouffée, and their creamy Cajun pastas! Let Thomas Meat & Seafood Market & Catering handle all your catering needs for your next big event!

Hi, I’m

ASHLEY

THE PURR-FECT CAT When I arrived at the Collierville Animal Shelter last year with my litter of five one-week-old kittens, we were skin and bones, dehydrated and in really bad shape. Given our special needs, we were immediately placed in a foster home. Those first few days were rough, and sadly, two of my kittens didn’t survive. Our wonderful foster mom was determined to save the rest of us, and she did! Thanks to her, my three kittens were adopted, and I’m here today hoping to find my forever home. I’m a two-year-old female diluted tortoiseshell, and in my foster home I live with a Border Collie and three other cats. I heard my foster mom say that she would love to keep me, but her other cats are unadoptable, and apparently I am something she calls the “perfect“ cat. I guess she says that because even though I’m a little shy, I get along well with dogs and cats, I am well socialized, I love belly rubs, chasing a laser pointer, playing with balls and curling up on the corner of my human’s bed at night. I’m playful, but never scratch, and I always use the litter box, because, yuck! Why wouldn’t you? I also love to look out windows and doors, but prefer to be an inside girl because the world outside was not kind to me. Oh, and I’m so calm I let my foster mom trim my nails with a regular nail clipper! But I’ll admit, even though my foster mom says I’m made of 100% sweetness, I’m not really perfect. I did used to play with cords, but she taught me to stop because apparently those cords cost money. Oh, and I also like to follow humans around and do laundry with them, which for me means showing them how to unfold what they just finished folding. Seriously, that game cracks me up. So, let’s cut to the chase. Do you have a place in your home for the PURR-FECT cat? If so, please contact the Collierville Animal Shelter and ask about me. And one more thing… fostering saves lives! Without my foster mom, I would have never had a chance at a happy ending. So, if you don’t have a permanent spot for a four-legger, please give some thought to opening your heart and home to a foster pet. Purrs and Kisses,

Ashley

LIFE

IS

A

H I G H WAY Riding a motorcycle has its perks and drawbacks. The fun and excitement of cruising down the highway on a motorcycle is among the top reasons to own your own bike, but those feelings can easily be extinguished by an unforeseen accident. Safety is key to enjoying your bike for years to come. In the event of an accident, motorcycle insurance will cover you and your bike! The following safety tips can help prevent accidents or at the very least, minimize the damage they cause:

WEAR SAFETY GEAR This may come as a no-brainer, but the right safety gear can save your life in a serious accident! Invest in a protective helmet, gloves, goggles, riding boots, and a sturdy jacket for all types of weather. In the event of an accident, the gear you’re wearing can be the only thing between you and the pavement. While these are basic examples of motorcycle gear, your garb should coincide with your riding lifestyle and habits.

TAKE A MOTORCYCLE SAFETY COURSE Whether you drive your bike in the city or on the highway, you face risks from the elements, road conditions, animals, and other drivers. A motorcycle safety course can teach you riding skills and techniques that can help you handle these risks in a safe and effective manner. You also get practice riding your bike in a controlled environment. There are multiple safety training courses offered in Collierville. A quick Google search will help you find the training right for you!

KNOW YOUR ROUTES FOR LONG DISTANCE TRAVELS Plan road trips carefully to avoid roads that have construction or excessive traffic, as these increase your risk of an accident. Stick to posted speed limits on highways, even if there’s no one around you! Take breaks often to avoid fatigue, and find a safe place to stop if you hit a patch of bad weather.

INSPECT YOUR BIKE While many people think there isn’t much to maintaining a motorcycle on a day-to-day basis, don’t let that keep you from a proper safety check before each ride. Even if your bike is brand new, have your motorcycle inspected before city or highway riding. Check your brakes, engine, mirrors, suspension, and tires. Don’t hit the road until you get a green light from your mechanic!

VILLE So much has been reported, and misreported, about the Millennial generation over the last few years. This group of individuals, mostly born between 1982 and 2002 (16-36 years old), represents well over 80 million people. You have heard the stereotypes: job jumpers, anti-home ownership, delaying marriage, huge college debt, 700 square foot urban core housing worshippers, no car, and, “the suburbs, no, never!” Trying to put 80 million people in one box is hard and misguided. Research is now showing that many of the Millennial narratives are untrue, as the data and research is suggesting. One thing that might surprise you is the impact that this group is having on Millennialville, I mean, Collierville. Recent U.S. Census Bureau data from 2013-2017 (5 years), focusing on Millennial movement within Shelby County, TN, is quite interesting. During this time frame, looking at those between the ages of 25-34, Germantown lost 300 residents, Bartlett saw an outward migration of 400 in this category, and Arlington saw outward migration of 500. Collierville gained 1,200! Did all those Millennials from Germantown, Bartlett, and Arlington move to Collierville?

22

TOUR CO L LIE RVIL LE .COM

july/a ugust 201 9

Well, that’s a possibility. The Town’s ESRI Database, which pulls demographic information from a variety of sources, shows that over the next 5 years (2018-2023) the 25-34 age group will provide 1000 new citizens to Collierville. This is the third most active age group set, sitting closely behind and on the heels of the 35-44 and 65-74 year olds. So, why Collierville, and why now? If you look at the latest data, Millennial home-buyers aren’t running to the big cities or urban centers like most narratives lead you to believe. They are heading out to the smaller, more suburban towns and villages where a slightly longer commute means affordability, safety, and low costs. If you place the Millennials in four phases: school, first job, marriage, and family formation, a case can be made that the married couples and those married with children are certainly Collierville bound. Suburban tastes remain predominant (4 in 5 according to a National Association of Realtors® study), with people under 45 preferring the single-family detached houses most often in suburban locales. Surveys, such as those from The Conference Board and Nielson, consistently

find that most Millennials see suburbs as the ideal place to live in the long run. Paraphrasing demographer, economist, and urban affairs writer, Joel Kotkin, “...the vast majority of Millennials desire essentially the same things they grew up with, the cul-de-sac, great schools, open space, parks & trails, and a sense of community.”

“...the vast majority of Millennials desire essentially the same things they grew up with, the cul-de-sac, great schools, open space, parks & trails, and a sense of community.” - Joel Kotkin Author, Geographer

Besides the national trend of Millennial migration away from the urban core to the suburbs and exurbs, Collierville offers a variety of advantages to this age group when compared to other communities in the region. With over 3,600 corporate headquarters jobs occupying 1.5M square feet of office space in Town, proximity to work is key on the relocation decision tree. Conversely, SR-385, I-269, US 72, Poplar, Winchester, and Shelby Drive provide efficient access to the Memphis MSA job market. Our top-rated school system allows families to access a high quality educational experience, where the 2019 Collierville High School class had 144 students with a 30+ on the ACT. That’s almost 25% of the Senior Class! 20 miles of trails connecting 750 acres of parkland provides that much coveted open space in and around Town. Fine dining, family restaurants, Carriage Crossing life-style center, Nicklaus and Palmer golf, and the award winning Historic Town Square help to round out a community that offers a unique experience for all, including the Millennials.

PICKING

UP

STEAM

Whether you say “STEAM” or “STEM,” it’s really about teaching your children life skills. We as parents struggle with all the learning choices and what we should be exposing our children to, so that they grow up prepared for this world. Do we buy STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) toys? What are good STEM toys? What about technology? How much is too much? And don’t forget the “Arts” in STEAM. Do we pack their summers with camps and learning opportunities, or do we slow down and spend quality time together? At the end of the day, it is our job to teach our children how to become the young adults we want them to be, and how to succeed in life.

Children who creatively express themselves show less frustration, a joy for learning & an appreciation for other perspectives. So where do we start? The reason STEM and STEAM toys are so popular is because, when used purposefully with parents and educators, they help children develop essential life skills like: Critical Thinking, Communication, Executive Function, and Creativity. Children that develop strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills are more likely to be motivated to achieve academically and less likely to be negatively influenced. Children that develop communication skills through fun and collaborative methods foster a 24

sense of self-esteem that enables healthy emotional development. Children who learn executive function skills such as planning, organizing, and strategizing, also develop self-regulation, inhibitory control, and working memory and cognitive flexibility, which allows them to learn new ideas and develop their social-emotional capabilities. So where do STEAM toys for children fit in? Good STEAM toys used in age-appropriate ways in educational environments by parents and educators can encourage children to communicate, collaborate, think critically and be creative – skills essential for success in and out of school. Some great STEAM toys for children two and under include link locks, magna tiles, foam number puzzles and building with foam blocks in H2O. For children ages three to five, Popular Playthings PlayStix, Smartmax My First Tractor set, Geometric Shapes Building Set, marble runs, Squigz, Legos, blocks, Plus Plus, gears, and magna tiles are all favorites at The Goddard School when used in small groups to foster communication, critical thinking and creativity. No matter what toys you purchase or what games or activities you plan, ask yourself what kind of daily learning environment you’re creating for your children. If your daily parent/child interactions help introduce and develop essential life skills in a positive environment, you’re on the right track to preparing your children for school and life! For more information on why The Goddard School of Collierville is the place for fun and learning, please contact Cathy Jo Mattson at 901-861-0108.

As soon as being outside doesn’t involve a coat or blanket, insects such as mosquitoes and ticks will no doubt join the party. Fortunately, in our region, mosquito bites are more relevant for the discomfort of itching they cause than transmitting disease. Light clothing is the best prevention, but some circumstances will require insect repellant. Multiple studies show that DEET containing insect repellent is by far the most successful deterrent. While care should be taken to use sparingly in the youngest patients (use away from the mouth, eyes, and hands that go in mouths), careful use in high insect exposure situations is appropriate. Spraying your hands, and then applying to areas near the face is recommended. For children under the age of 2

REMOVE TICKS THE RIGHT WAY 1. Clean the area around the tick bite with rubbing alcohol. 2. Get your tweezers right down on your skin so you can grab as close as possible to the tick’s head. 3. Pull up slow and firm. 4. Clean the bite area again, and your hands, with rubbing alcohol or soap and water.

years, products with a DEET concentration below 10% should be used. In our region, the two most common tick-borne illnesses are Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Ehrlichiosis. These two diseases, as well as Lyme disease, require a tick to be attached for greater than 24 hours to transmit these infections. This makes checking for ticks paramount after likely exposure in the woods or tall grass. Onset of illness is typically 1-3 weeks after the bite, and RMSF and Ehrlichiosis will almost always start with a fever and fairly significant illness. Headache, nausea, and vomiting may accompany the fever, and the presence of a rash starting on the wrists or ankles makes the diagnosis much more obvious. The best way to know whether a febrile illness is indicative of a tick-related illness is by exam, and review of complete history by your child’s Pediatrician (lab test results often take several days). As mentioned, Lyme disease is very rare in our region, but a target rash around the bite should prompt a visit to the child’s physician.

MOST RECOGNIZE COLLIERVILLE AS A SMALL TOWN. HOWEVER, IF YOU THINK OF COLLIERVILLE IN TERMS OF HOMES AND SQUARE FOOTAGE, OUR TOWN SEEMINGLY GETS QUITE A BIT BIGGER. IN FACT, COLLIERVILLE HAS A TOTAL OF 688M+ SQUARE FEET, AND SOME OF THE NICEST HOMES IN SHELBY COUNTY OCCUPY THAT SPACE.

O

ne part of town that we are particularly excited about is next door to the Town Square, where we are in the midst of a revitalized Historic District. Lost Pizza Co. has found its new home on Washington Square, and there are several retail storefronts popping up next to it. As these developments have been moving along, we’ve seen more and more new home construction around the Historic District, bringing a unique opportunity to blend new modern home trends in a traditional neighborhood - all within walking

distance to Washington Square and the Historic Town Square. That said, we were granted access to one of these freshly built, beautiful homes in Homewood Place Subdivison so that you, our readers, can take a walk-through and experience the newest home trends. In the pages that follow, we’ve arranged spectacular photography of some of Collierville’s finest square footage. So, get ready to walk through some gorgeous Collierville homes - first stop: the Fitzgerald Residence!

LISA & FRANK FITZGERALD RESIDENCE NATCHEZ PARK LANE

Lisa and Frank Fitzgerald are longtime Collierville residents, and they were gracious enough to open their doors to us so that we could get a look inside their gorgeous new home! Lisa, a broker for Main Street Realtors, naturally has seen quite a few homes, giving her a good idea of what they were looking for in a new home. Frank, being one of the developers of their subdivision, Homewood Place, absolutely loved the location. Once the home was built by Eric Tucker of Inglewood Homes, Lisa and Frank reached out to one of their friends, Lesley Cullen of Lesley Cullen Interiors for some guidance on how to make their design dreams come true: “I was so excited when they called me to help them with their new home. And then when I saw the floor plans that Carson Looney had come up with, it was just really exciting, because he put so much thought into the placement of windows and doors, and the natural light in the rooms. It enhances your experience [touring a home] when you have a really well thought out architectural floor plan. Architect Carson Looney of local firm Looney Ricks Kiss designed the floor plan for the home, and you can

see the natural light spilling in across the natural hardwood floors of their entryway and beautiful baby grand piano room. The Fitzgeralds had this idea of a modern farmhouse with a good blend of clean and rustic aesthetics, which is masterfully executed in the large kitchen area. Moving past the entryway and into the kitchen, Lesley says Lisa had a good idea of the look she was trying to achieve: “She [Lisa] liked

the idea of a classic, timeless white kitchen, and then adding warm wood elements to contrast with the white.” Lesley also mentions that the Fitzgeralds had already invested in some traditional pieces, so they were able to mix in some new upholstery, along with a few vintage-looking pieces, and local artwork by Sarah Robertson; you will notice all of these looks blended throughout the home. “We wanted to keep the big pieces neutral, and use our color in the rug, artwork, and our accessories,” says Lesley. There are quite a few popular home trends that you may notice in the kitchen, such as the cedar beams across the ceiling, globe light fixtures over the expansive island, the farmhouse kitchen sink next to the dishwasher, and lantern backsplash tile.

Right off the kitchen, you’ll notice a brick path that lends to the rustic-feel of the home, which leads to the grey, sliding barn doors that close off the laundry room (pg. 31). Barn doors have taken off in the last couple years, and we’ve been seeing more and more of these utilized in new residential construction. As we move into the bedroom, you’ll notice the natural hardwood floors continue, and the colors of the bedding and pillows match the color of the walls. The bathroom is spectacular, with the tile under the soaker tub matching the lantern backsplash from the kitchen. The back wall is made from shiplap, and the DIY project in the upcoming pages will show you how to update your home with a similar look! A nice final touch is the large, rustic mirror next to the tub. Tour Collierville’s personal favorite area is the spacious, covered outdoor patio that incorporates all the interior aesthetics. From the wood-planked ceiling, to the white walls and brick fireplace, the Fitzgerald Residence really comes together as a modern style, Southern farmhouse.

ollierville residents love a good patio. We’ve noticed an influx of patio spaces over the last few years, whether it be at restaurants or residential. It is becoming a standard practice for new restaurants to incorporate space for a patio, as we’ve seen in the new Lost Pizza Co., Collierville Commissary, and Salsarita’s to name a few. As reflected in the Fitzgerald Residence home tour in previous pages, large patio spaces have become the norm for new residential construction as well. However, there comes a time in the summer where sitting outside in the Collierville heat is just a bit too much, without having a pool nearby to cool down. With that in mind, we sought out to find one of the most spectacular pools in the Collierville area. Brandon Malone, of Malone Construction Enterprise, LLC, helped point us in the right direction, having just completed a high-tech pool with almost every feature you can imagine. With a focus on quality over quantity, Brandon says they are able to pay more attention to the details that clients really desire. After having met with the Memphis Tigers Assistant Coach Mike Miller and his wife Jennifer, Brandon says it was apparent that they wanted a truly unique backyard

environment, not just a pool. “Jennifer was adamant about having a koi pond that could be seen through the house and from the front door entrance. We later integrated a linear fire trough feature and four deck jets to make it a one-of-a-kind koi pond,” says Brandon. The koi pond adds another ‘sitting’ area to the backyard paradise, just off the covered patio. One important component of the pool to the Millers is that they wanted to bring the pool up as close to the covered porch as possible, so that those swimming in the pool could still socialize with those sitting underneath the covered area. “As the house wraps all the way around the pool on three sides, there were a lot of different viewpoints that needed to be taken into account from a design aspect,” says Brandon. From the vantage point of the covered porch, one can see nearly thirty feet of vanishing edge that makes it look as if the pool is flowing into the pool house. However, looking towards the pool from the pool house, you see a massive sheet of water cascading down the stone-veneered wall

“MIKE AND JENNIFER WERE SOME OF THE MOST AMAZING CLIENTS TO WORK FOR AS THEY WERE VERY OPEN TO LETTING US CREATE A DESIGN THAT WAS OUTSIDE-THE-BOX FOR YOUR TYPICAL POOL. that is collected in a trough basin that also functions as a lounge area, complete with a hidden grotto (pg. 34)! As a lot of effort went into the small details of the pool, Brandon says that he worked with the Millers to come up with a truly unique plaster color by mixing several different colors of Diamond Brite plaster mix to achieve their desired look. “The pool deck is a square-cut Bluestone and the veneer stone is called ‘dove grey’. The coping around the pool perimeter is an Indiana Limestone,” says Brandon. Adding to the details, Malone Construction incorporated multiple sheer descents, and two copper fire features. Malone and the Millers decided to have an elevated spa/

jacuzzi, making it perfect for viewing the wildlife that comes out in the late evenings from the adjoining fields. As mentioned, the Miller pool is hightech. Consisting of over sixty thousand gallons, the pool has seven Jandy® pumps that operate the pool, koi pond, spa sheer descents, and the vanishing edge feature. Amazingly, it can all be controlled from a smartphone: “All the pool features and

functions are controlled through Jandy’s iAquaLink™ system that allows you to control everything from your phone, wherever there is internet service,” says Brandon. That means even if the Millers are in another city, they can control their pool with a couple clicks on their phones. by | AUSTIN ESSARY photos | MICHAEL STIRES

REAPING THE REWARDS REALTOR TIPS

Homeowners considering a renovation project may want to look outside to get the most bang for their buck. A study from the National Association of REALTORS® and the National Association of Landscape Professionals found that outdoor remodeling projects bring great value – both emotionally and financially – to the homeowners who complete them. The study found that the most cost-effective project was implementing standard lawn care, which recoups 267 percent of the project cost at resale. Curb appeal plays a significant role when selling your home, but also adds to the enjoyment of living in your home. In this study from the National Association of REALTORS®, the top four renovation projects that appeal to buyers all deal with outside curb appeal. The first item on the list is Standard Lawn Care Service. Performing six applications of fertilizer and weed control is estimated between $375 and $1,000. Based on this study, you will recover 267% of this cost when selling your home. Also, 49% of homeowners have an increased sense of enjoyment when they are at home after completing this renovation. 38

TO UR CO LLIE RVIL LE .COM

july/a ugust 201 9

Similarly, Landscape Maintenance is the second project in the top four. Annual mulch application, mowing, pruning of shrubs, and planting approximately 60 perennials or annuals is estimated at around $3,000. Not only can you expect to recover 100% of this cost when selling your home, but 75% of homeowners also have a greater desire to be at home. In keeping with the landscaping theme, an Overall Landscape Upgrade is the third project. Say, for example, you were to install a front walkway of natural flagstone, three feet wide and 30 feet long, two stone planters, five flowering shrubs, and one deciduous 15-foot-tall tree. The estimate for this project is around $6,000, and you can expect to recover 83% of this cost when selling. Based on this project, 78% of homeowners have an increased sense of enjoyment when they are at home. While these are the top three projects that appeal to buyers, let’s take a look at some other projects that appeal to homeowners. Adding an Outdoor Kitchen is a great way to really start enjoying that backyard. While most REALTORS® would not recommend you add an Outdoor Kitchen just to help sell your home, it will

add to the marketability. In this study, it is estimated that for $14,000 you could add one inset grill, stainless steel drawers, ice chest, sink, and 60 square feet of concrete countertop. It is also estimated you would recover 71% of this cost. Like the other projects, a significant percentage of people that add a Fire Feature have a greater desire to be at home: 83%. Based on installing a dry-stacked natural stone kit, gas burner and a 10-foot diameter flagstone patio, you would be looking at a cost of $6,000 with a recovery rate of 67%. Whether you are selling your home or just looking to create a greater sense of enjoyment while at home, don’t overlook the outside spaces! DIY: REFACING A WALL PRESENTED BY 901 FLOORS

1

626 W. Poplar Ave, Collierville, TN 38017 (901) 457-7370 / 901floors.com

2

BEFORE YOU START Products can be installed over: drywall, plywood, cement board. Note: All substrates should be sound, clean, dry, smooth, and flat. Do not install over greasy/oily surfaces, loose paint, or other debris. For standard installations of hardwood on walls, the product can be installed horizontally, vertically, and as a wainscoting. For best results, layout the planks/ strips on the floor prior to installing on wall to determine the desired visual.

TOOLS & MATERIALS •

Flooring

Air Compressor

Stud Finder

Nail Gun (Brad Nails)

Tape Measure

Jig Saw

Caulk gun

Table Saw

3

STEP 1: LOCATE WALL STUDS Use a stud finder to find wall studs, and use a pencil to mark the locations of the studs. Using a tape measure, measure (a) the distance from the floor to ceiling and (b) the length of the wall. These measurements should be used to determine both the amount of hardwood needed for wall installation, and the spacing of the first and last row of horizontal installation. Arrange the hardwood planks/strips on the floor to see the desired visuals and patterns. 42

TO UR CO LLIE RVIL LE .COM

july/a ugust 201 9

PRO TIP: To achieve a random appearance, keep the end joints of adjacent rows at least 6” apart throughout installation.

PRO TIP: When fitting around obstacles or into irregular spaces, planks can be cut easily and cleaned using a utility knife with a sharp blade. It is often beneficial to make a cardboard template of the area and transfer this pattern to the plank. Protect all exposed edges of the flooring by installing quarter round. Make sure no plank will be secured in any way to the subfloor.

STEP 2: PLACE THE FIRST PLANK/STRIP

STEP 3: ENGAGE ROW OF PLANK/STRIPS

Connect the brad nailer to the air compressor and turn it on. Use 1-1/2” to 2” long brads. Place plank on the wall so that the side tongue of the plank is facing up. Face nail (where the nail will be seen) on the plank in an area where the wall base trim will cover the plank. Also blind nail (so the nail will not be seen) through the tongue of the plank. Place the second plank on the wall such that the end of the plank tongue can be engaged into the groove end of the first plank installed. Then brad nail the second plank in the same manner as initial plank. Repeat to finish the first row.

Engage the initial plank of the second row into the adjacent plank(s) of the first row. Do not face nail second row or subsequent rows. Instead, only blind nail into the side tongue. Engage the tongue into the groove (with accompanying blind nailing) and continue installing planks on the wall.

PRO TIP: After completing the first row, use a cut plank from the first row (if longer than 6”) for the start of the second row.

ACCOUNTING FOR OUTLETS AND SWITCHES If there are either outlets or switches on the wall, a jig saw or coping saw can be used to cut the hardwood flooring to allow the proper fit of the outlets or switches. First, remove the outlet covers so you can cut the hardwood planks to fit around them. Then, reinstall the faceplate over the hardwood flooring. *Materials provided by 901 FLOORS j u ly/au g u st 201 9

Serenity Between the Sounds

TOUR CO L LIE RVIL LE .COM

july/a ugust 201 9

propane burner ignites flames shooting upward, filling a massive brightlycolored balloon. The heat gently lifts the basket skyward, and all the background noise of our busy Town below fades away into silence. The delicate bursts of hot air lift you high enough to see Collierville and all its beauty in a new light, as the waning sun paints the sky in purple and pinkish hues. The ‘Captain,’ Skip Durham, communicates via radio down to his ‘Crew Chief’ and wife, Toni Durham. Toni hears on her walkie talkie “Balloon to Chase” before receiving further instruction from Skip as they reach an altitude of 1000 feet. Floating along between two and three miles per hour, you can take in all the flora and fauna below, sometimes drifting directly past the Water Tower and over the Town Square - quite literally wherever the wind takes you! As a commercially licensed pilot, Skip took Toni on their first balloon flight in 2009 while on a date, and the two have been flying together ever since. It did take a little convincing on Toni’s part, 6 months to be exact, before Skip finally agreed to their biggest adventure yet, starting Bluff City Balloons, LLC in 2012. The Durham’s traded in Skip’s first hot air balloon for a new model in 2015, cleverly naming it High Jinx. For seven years this duo has been in the business of giving passengers the ride of their lives, right here in Collierville. “There is an overwhelming sense of serenity when you’re up there,” remarks Toni. “Everything is so serene when you’re gliding through the air. Everything gets so quiet, you can even

hear the wind.” Toni pauses briefly looking for the right words, finally saying “when I fly, I feel very near to God. I get to see the world from a different perspective. There is a little faith involved, that He is going to get me up and back down again, but to experience that peace, there really is just so much serenity between the sounds.” As High Jinx takes to the sky on an unforgettable ride across Town with Skip and the passengers, Toni is the boots on the ground. The crew simultaneously navigates the roads while Toni watches the hot air balloon app for updates, and Skip charts his course. Landing a hot air balloon takes some finesse. A multitude of factors go into a graceful landing, and depending on the wind, you may end your ride in a pasture or even in a neighborhood! Toni communicates with neighbors and property owners prior to the landing, who almost always answer with an emphatic “YES!” before the balloon’s arrival. Bluff City Balloons also honors the longstanding tradition of a champagne toast and Balloonist Prayer once safely on the ground! Between carrying passengers, the Durham’s occasionally have the opportunity to fly together and appreciate the, pun-intended, gravity of the experience. “When it’s just the

two of us, we usually are quiet. It’s nice to be present and in the moment, with no distractions. In that hour there aren’t any problems; nothing else is going on in the world. We’re just flying with the wind, appreciating the beauty of the world around us. Owning our balloon is something we don’t take for granted. It is a blessing that we are so excited to share with people, whether it’s their first or fortieth flight!” Don’t let fear or disability stop you from taking this ride of a lifetime. “When people tell me they are afraid of heights,” says Toni, “I tell them that you’re moving at a constant horizontal rate, and your eyes are locked in on the horizon. High Jinx is uniquely designed to include a door for easy access, and a FAA approved chair is available and can be raised for a perfect view for passengers with special needs. Our business is to make this once in a lifetime experience the best it can be, so everything has to be impeccable. And if everything can’t be impeccable for you, we’ll reschedule it for another day. It means that much to us! Considering this is outdoor sports, our crew goes above and beyond with not only our equipment, but with the passengers who go on this adventure with us.”

Some exciting news is in the works for Bluff City Balloons, LLC. The Durham’s are working hard to take Collierville to the sky! “We’re working on getting a Balloon Festival together for Father’s Day 2020! We’re looking at having 30 balloons, and the event simply has to be in Collierville. We have a vision for this to be an annual event and forty years from now, it becoming a family tradition for people to attend! And what better timing than next year being Collierville’s Sesquicentennial year. We decided on the name ‘The Great Bluff City Hot Air Balloon Jamboree’ to encompass the carnival, live music atmosphere we’re going to provide. We haven’t nailed down all the specific details, but we can’t wait to bring this kind of excitement to Collierville.” Visit bluffcityballoons.com to schedule a true Collierville adventure! by | ANNA BELL

Models: David Quarles, Elizabeth Scott, Emily Redd, Reagan Shockley Wardrobe: The Shops of Saddle Creek (J.Crew, Indigo, American Threads), Stock + Belle Jewelry: IV by David

ow is the perfect time to not only update your wardrobe with some of Summer’s coolest trends, but to also add in a few game-changing pieces that will help you stand out among the crowd. Whether planning your next getaway vacation or simply looking for a cute dress for a Summer Concert Series on the Square, here are a few style tips to keep in mind when creating your looks this upcoming season:

ALWAYS BET ON DENIM Skinny jeans are a yearround staple, but for the warmer months, you want to keep it cool. Distressed cut-offs and cropped jeans with a frayed hem can easily be dressed up with a statement making blouse and platform sandals, or kept casual, but on trend with lots of layered necklaces and breezy crop tops.

LET YOUR JEWELRY AND CCESSORIES DO THE TALKING If jeans and a simple tee are more your thing, but you still want to zhoosh it up, look for intricate, statement making jewelry to add to your collection. Mixed metals in geometric shapes and colorful beading are must-haves this season and instantly elevate whatever you’re wearing; just pile it on as you’re heading out the door. For your bag, keep it cute (circular style bags are hot right now), and keep it tiny so that you can carry your essentials (phone, wallet, and your favorite lippie) close to your body.

GEM TONES MAKE EVERYTHING BETTER What’s better than a sundress? A sundress in a bright, pretty color. Gem tones are bold, but still flattering on just about everyone, and look great when paired with your favorite

denim jacket and casual booties. Look for shades like topaz, teal, and garnet to play up tanned skin, and if it has fun pom-pom details, scoop it up!

LET YOUR FOOTWEAR LEAD THE WAY If you wear the wrong shoes to a Summer concert, your feet will be toast! So when all else fails, go for comfort and stability (with a little chicness thrown in). You want to wear shoes that you can walk around for hours in, so ankle boots and wedges/espadrilles are the way to go. White ankle booties are all the rage right now, but you can never go wrong with classic cowboy boots, or thick strap platform sandals (trust when we say the extra padding will help).

GUYS CAN UP THEIR STYLE GAME TOO While graphic tees and cargo shorts are a no-brainer outfit, it’s totally cool for guys to switch it up too. Breezy button downs with a fun pattern are stylish without doing too much, and will work with both khakis and distressed denim. Men with style can push boundaries a little bit, so don’t be afraid to also add a hat or simple gold necklaces and beaded bracelets into the mix. When choosing your outfit for the night, just know that you can truly wear whatever you want without sticking to one aesthetic. With so many festivals and fun to choose from around Collierville, the sartorial possibilities are endless. Putting ‘C’hristian Principles into Practice photos | Tish Lewis

In 5th grade I started riding the bus to school. In those days we had bus stops where a bunch of kids from nearby neighborhoods would gather to catch the bus at a central location. Mine was the flagpole at the YMCA on Campbell Street in Jackson, TN. I had played youth sports through the ‘Y’ since I was six, but this was my first experience with the ‘Y’. Although 40 years have passed, the memories and the life lessons linger. This is where I first “hung out” with kids who were different from me, where I first heard the clang of a weight room and had my first encounters with YMCA staff. Those after-school workers became coaches and mentors during some tough years for me. They were quick with a joke, but also unafraid to have a serious conversation when they heard I was goofing off at school or taking a wrong path. In contrast to other places I experienced as a ten-year-old kid, the ‘Y’ seemed alive. It was the first place I felt like I belonged, and I was not alone. The ‘Y’ was an educational, athletic and relational hub for thousands of people in our community. That was no accident. The Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) was founded in 1844 in London to be a safe place for teenagers to escape the streets during the industrial revolution. Specifically, the founder of the ‘Y’, George Williams, believed it was a moral necessity to provide an alternative to the ever popular “bars and brothels.” The movement spread rapidly as people of Faith saw the ‘Y’ as a great opportunity to “Love, Care and Serve as Jesus would.” The Memphis chapter was established in 1855 and remains one of the oldest in our country. Throughout the history of the movement, the effort to consistently carry out the mission of the ‘Y’ has led to several significant innovations. Basketball, volleyball, bodybuilding, group swim lessons and summer camps are all valuable contributions to society, invented by the ‘Y’. 50

Aquatics continues to be a primary area of focus at the YMCA at Schilling Farms, with competitive and developmental swim teams, swim lessons for all ages and an innovative Safety Around Water program designed to significantly reduce accidental drowning. In partnership with donors and local schools, YMCA at Schilling Farms seeks to provide this training to every 2nd grader in Collierville Schools. Why is this needed?

88% of drownings happen with

an adult present. Combine that statistic with 60% of drownings happening within 10 feet of safety. As a community, we need to act. Safety Around Water is designed to teach life saving skills in and around water, that will make a difference to improve those statistics within our community. The YMCA at Schilling Farms will teach more than 1,000 children Safety Around Water at no cost in 2019. Another recent innovation is the Livestrong at the YMCA program, created after research discovered a significant concern among cancer survivors being fearful of not being able to return to an active lifestyle. This 12 week group process provides instruction, community and support free of charge to survivors as they reestablish their fitness journey.

Each year there are more than

1.8 million cancer diagnoses. The ‘Y’ understands the need for programs to support cancer survivors, and the YMCA at Schilling Farms will run 4 sessions this year helping survivors regain mental and physical strength through this 12 week, instructor lead journey. As with many things at the ‘Y’, it’s not only about fitness, but for many it’s about the friendships made, and also strengthening Faith.

People have a deep relational connection to their fitness community. For many, this community is their “tribe.” Out of desperation, founder, George Williams, sought others who shared his values, worldview and Faith. He found his “tribe” and those 12 young men banded together as the first Young Men’s Christian Association with the goal of “improving the spiritual condition of the young men engaged in houses of business, by the formation of Bible classes, family and social prayer meetings, mutual improvement societies, or any other spiritual agency.” Over the past decade, church leaders along with ‘Y’ staff and board members around the world have noticed and made a sincere effort to reconnect with the foundational heritage by more actively living out the ‘C’ in the YMCA. This takes many forms including pastoral care of ‘Y’ staff, prayer ministries, Bible studies, volunteer Chaplain programs, support groups, counseling services and church plants. Currently there are more than 1500 churches that meet in ‘Y’s across the U.S. There are 5 churches meeting in Memphis area ‘Y’s including the Collierville campus of Fellowship Memphis. This summer we moved to Memphis to serve as staff pastor and leading the effort to partner with churches and like-minded organizations to create opportunities to Love, Care, and Serve as Jesus would throughout the ‘Y’ movement. As I spend time with our staff, it is easy to encourage them in their roles to ensure that the YMCA continues to be a valuable place of growth and change, like it was for me growing up. Just like George Williams said 175 years ago, we still believe it’s a moral and spiritual necessity to live out the YMCA’s mission in our community: “...to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.’’

FIRED UP

Ready for backyard barbeques and outdoor grilling now that the warm weather has arrived? Nothing beats the flavors of fire-roasted food! Here are some tips to get you (safely) fired up. After a long winter without use, it doesn’t hurt to give the grill a good cleaning. Scrub cooking grates and run grilling tools through the dishwasher. Clean the grease trap beneath the grill, then consider lining it with aluminum foil for an easy clean-up next year. Give a propane grill a test run before cooking to make sure all the burners are firing and there are no leaks in the propane cylinder hose (check by smell and using the soapy bubble test; never use a lit match to test for leaks). If cooking with a charcoal grill, follow the directions and be familiar with the precautions listed on the charcoal starter fluid, which is both toxic and flammable. An alternative to starter fluid is to use a chimney starter which uses crumpled paper to ignite the coals. To cool the grilling coals and ashes, close the lid and vents to your charcoal grill for 48 hours. Used charcoal and ashes can retain heat and remain active for a long time, and many fires have started due to their improper disposal. Once the grilling coals have cooled completely, wrap the material in aluminum foil and place in a 52

TOUR CO L LIE RVIL LE .COM

july/a ugust 201 9

non-combustible container, or place the coals in a metal can with a lid. Never place charcoal and ashes directly into a plastic garbage bin.

OTHER SAFETY TIPS TO REMEMBER • Wear short sleeves, or roll sleeves up when cooking on the grill. • Use long-handled barbecue tools • Keep a 3-foot kid-safe (and pet-safe) zone around your grill. • Always keep an eye on your food; never leave a grill unattended. • Remember to clean the grill after each use to prevent grease or fat buildup that could be ignited by a hot grill. • Do not store propane cylinders in buildings or garages. • If an accidental burn occurs, place the burn in cool water for 3-5 minutes and cover it with a clean, dry cloth. For a burn larger than your palm, see your doctor. Remember to “Stop, Drop, Cover, and Roll” if any clothing accidentally catches fire.

Lieutenant Clay Blair of Collierville Fire Station #5 has fought fires for the last 25 years and suggests two safety tips to follow when grilling out this summer. “Be attentive when you’re grilling,” says Lt. Blair. “Never light the grill and walk

away. Many fires happen because the person just walked away. Also, bring your grills out from underneath a structure. A lot of people like to have their grills under a balcony, but the best place is to be out in the open air. I’ve seen numerous fires started from catching onto a house structure, and that can be prevented!” If a fire does happen to occur, Lt. Blair recommends, if possible, to first cut off the propane and close the grill. If this is not possible, do not use water, but rather have a fire extinguisher handy to smother the fire. Call 911 in the event that the fire is too large for you to put out. Be safe and enjoy grilling this summer! by | THE COLLIERVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT
