CELEBRATE LOVE

www.threeguyspizzapies.com

Welcome to spring! Everyone here at Tour Collierville is certainly ready for warmer weather, longer days and more sunshine. Although we may not be able to get together in the ways we initially planned, we can still enjoy what nature has to offer with walks around the Collierville Town Square. In this issue’s bridal features, we are celebrating a constant: love. We picked our cover lyric with this in mind. As Elvis Presley croons, “some things are meant to be” and love is certainly one of those things. Despite troubled times, for all those involved in the wedding industry particularly, weddings over the past year celebrated the devotion that couples have to each other and centered that same celebration back on the simple actions of love.

“Darling, so it goes / Some things are meant to be / Take my hand / Take my whole life too / For I can’t help falling in love with you” - Elvis Presley, Can’t Help Falling In Love

Newlyweds will find advice aplenty in this issue. From buying their first home to navigating the complexities of marriage, you can find ways to keep your time together special, even if your wedding wasn’t everything you had once planned. Although we feature martial love specifically in this issue, we know that other types of love are just as validating and just as constant. Love is incredibly important to express and to feel, especially during times of hardship and uncertainty. So we encourage you to seek out and value all the love in your life, not just right now but throughout the year. Wishing you a happy spring filled with lots of love!

MEET KAREN. GENERAL MANAGER ROADSHOW BMW & ROADSHOW MINI

klombardo@roadshowbmw.com

My name is Karen Lombardo. I have been the General Manager at Roadshow BMW and Roadshow MINI since 2017... and I am a proud Collierville resident!

2017 when I was offered my position at the dealership. We decided to build our new home here in Collierville after falling in love with everything Collierville has to offer. The thing I love the most about our town is the pride that I can sense in all of you, its residents… and the way the folks who live here support local businesses so strongly!

and Walnut Grove Road. We serve Memphis and the entire mid-south. We are a small, privately owned business. We have been owned by the same family for almost 40 years. We employ over 115 full-time employees who live in the Greater Memphis area. Not only do we provide a fully digital purchase experience to our clients, but we also provide our wonderful service valet program to all customers at no charge. We will pick up your vehicle from your home or work when you need service and return it to you when service is complete!

I know you have a lot of options when it comes to your automotive needs, so I wanted to take a few minutes to tell you about us. Roadshow BMW and Roadshow MINI are located at the corner of Germantown Parkway

At the heart of our beliefs about the automotive business is our strong opinion that customers should have the privilege of doing business where their business matters. So, in January 2019, we launched our Roadshow Gives

Back program. We are supporting a different local charitable organization plan to continue this program in the future. We are so proud of how well our business has integrated with these fantastic organizations and their goals. I look forward to meeting more of my Collierville neighbors as time goes by. I hope you’ll consider Roadshow BMW and Roadshow MINI the next time you are ready to purchase a new or used vehicle. I assure you that when you do business with Roadshow, your business matters.

The One!

SEARCHING FOR

Greetings! My name is Grimm and I’m so excited to meet you! My story begins when I was a kitten and my humans took me to get neutered. During the procedure, I had a very rare reaction under anesthesia which caused me to stop breathing. The vet revived me, but soon realized that my trauma had left me blind and deaf. Given my health issues, my humans were unable to care for me. An employee from the vet kindly stepped up to foster me during my recovery. After a few months, I completely regained my hearing and close-up vision, so it was time for my next step. Since I was still such a young kitten, the humans at the Collierville Animal Shelter decided it would be best for me to spend some time in a foster home. So I moved in with two dogs, three cats and my wonderful foster mom. My best friend here is Idgie the dog. Even though she’s blind (and my only issue is slightly blurry distance vision), we get each other and have both adapted beautifully. My foster mom actually thinks my most unique habit may have come from my earlier vision loss. When I do zoomies, instead of running around in circles, I go vertical! I approach a wall and pogo up and off and back down all while talking to my mom. She says I’m funny, full of personality and the very best company. My skills and confidence have grown so much during my time here. Last night she told me that as much as she will miss me, I am finally ready for

a forever home. She whispered to me that I am a GREAT cat — super sweet, cuddly and loving. I think she says that because I nap with her on the couch for hours, I love to be picked up and held, and I give her lots and lots of kisses. I am a little under a year old, male, sweet and very affectionate. I have a kennel and I happily spend time there. My mom occasionally gives me baths, and when she does, she says I am the most obedient and well mannered boy. She tells me I’m gorgeous and may require a little extra commitment, but I’m 100% worth it. If you’re reading this, could it mean that you could be my human? If you think so, please make an appointment to come here and meet me at the Collierville Animal Shelter. I hope we discover that I am the PURRfect companion for you!

XOXO,

Grimm

TIPS

FOR

Smart Health Habits At the beginning of a new year, we always seem to create resolutions that tend to revolve around diet and exercise. Despite our best intentions, many people fail to reach those goals. However, with spring comes new life and new resolutions: to prioritize wellness throughout the year. Consider these tips for creating healthy, long-lasting habits in 2021:

TIP #1: THINK BALANCE AND MODERATION, NOT DEPRIVATION. All foods can have a place in your diet. Instead of deciding which foods to remove from your diet, think about what you can add to your diet to make it healthier and sustainable. A balanced plate should consist of protein, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats. You could sneak some spinach in your morning smoothie or add an extra vegetable to your dinner.

TIP #2: EXERCISE BECAUSE YOU LOVE YOUR BODY, NOT BECAUSE YOU HATE IT. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, healthy adults aged 18-65 years should aim for a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity at least five days per week, or vigorous-intensity aerobic activity for a minimum of 20 minutes three days per week. Exercising should not be a punishment for indulging in your favorite pizza or grandma’s famous chocolate pie. Instead, it should be a fun activity that you enjoy. If you aren’t sure what type of exercise you like, try different things out! You could swim, bike, dance, run or 16

TOURCOLLIERVILLE.COM

m a rc h/a pril 20 21

lift weights. The list goes on! If you don’t like working out alone, invite a friend [follow CDC guidelines for COVID-19] and you can motivate each other.

TIP #3: DON’T FALL FOR DIET TRENDS AND FADS. We see them on social media, at the grocery store and we even hear about them from friends and coworkers. Detox teas, no carb diets, juice fasts – you name it. Not only can these trends be dangerous for your health, they can also be expensive. Remember, you can’t drastically change your health overnight. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

TIP #4: MAKE SMART GOALS. SMART is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. An example of a SMART diet goal could be to have a serving of vegetables with lunch and dinner daily for a week. A SMART exercise goal could be to walk on your treadmill for 30 minutes for 3 days a week. If you have a general health goal, see if you can break it down to fit the SMART criteria.

TIP #5: CHOOSE FOODS THAT YOU ENJOY! Don’t feel like you must eat foods you despise, just because they’re considered healthy. If broccoli makes your stomach churn, leave it off your plate. Instead, focus on the vegetables you do enjoy. You could even make it a goal to try a new veggie twice a month! If you plan on making health-related changes in 2021, follow these tips to make sure your goals are realistic and sustainable. When in doubt, consult a Registered Dietitian to help you along the way! RETIREMENT

FINANCIAL

MOVES

Inflection points is a term used widely to describe historical or technological events, such as the Industrial Revolution or the creation of the internet — events that changed human existence in some important way. You have personal inflection points too, and when they occur, you will need to make the right financial moves. Here are three of the most important of these life inflection points, along with suggestions on dealing with them:

MARRIAGE When you get married, you and your spouse will need to discuss a variety of financial issues. What assets and liabilities do you each bring to the marriage? Should you combine your finances or continue with separate accounts? Is one of you a “saver” while the other is a “spender”? Do you share similar investment philosophies, or is one of you much more aggressive than the other? You do not necessarily have to agree on everything, but you should at least try to gain enough knowledge so you can avoid unpleasant surprises, 18

FOR

LIFE’S

such as hidden debts, and find enough common ground so your household can advance toward your common financial goals.

 CHECKLIST ITEMS • Develop a monthly budget and stick to it.

• Decide who will manage day-today finances.

NEW CHILD When you welcome a new child into your family, you will need to make sure you have adequate life insurance. You will also want to review the beneficiary designations on any existing insurance policies, as well as on your IRA and 401(k). If you can afford it, you may want to start contributing to a college fund, possibly using a 529 savings plan, which can provide you with tax advantages.

 CHECKLIST ITEMS • Review and update beneficiaries of your IRAs, 401(k) plans, life insurance, annuities and other accounts.

By the time you retire, you will have hopefully been investing in your IRA and 401(k) or other retirement plans for several decades. Once you do retire, you will need to determine how much you can afford to withdraw each year from your various retirement accounts. Your withdrawal rate will depend on your age, your asset level and your retirement lifestyle. You will also want to consider other issues: Are you prepared to deal with health care costs? Even with Medicare, these costs may be higher than they were when you were working. How about your estate plans? Are they up to date? Have you protected your family from the possibility of your estate going through the time-consuming, expensive and public process of probate? You may need to work with your financial, tax and legal advisors to develop an effective estate strategy.

 CHECKLIST ITEMS • Establish investment strategies that can help you achieve your retirement goals. By making smart decisions and seeking the advice of a qualified financial advisor following your inflection points, you can ease the transitions in your life — wherever it takes you. Jeffery Elsworthy Edward Jones® Financial Advisor 155 North Main Street, Suite 103 901-861-1350 Edward Jones® , its employees and financial advisors are not estate planners and cannot provide tax or legal advice. TH E STORY B EHIN D TH E

Numbers In the hyper-competitive world of economic development, a community’s ability to craft a positive narrative is important. One of the key elements of “the story” revolves around demographic information. Collierville’s ability to go deeper when presenting our numbers can be the difference between fully participating in the process or simply observing from afar. What do our demographic numbers truly represent about our Town’s future?

POPULATION Restaurants and retailers will not seriously consider a market for expansion unless the population is over 50,000. At the end of 2020, the population of Collierville was 52,951, per Environmental Systems Research Institute analytics, meaning we have just crossed that magical line. The amazing thing is how we got here. In the last 20 years, approximately 1000 people per year have relocated to our Town. With this growth has come new neighborhoods, schools, retailers, restaurants, parks and updated infrastructure. This consistent growth speaks to the sustainability of the area, which is projected to continue. Some forecasts show the Town at 75,000 by 2040. You throw Germantown in the mix, and our area today is a power suburb of 90,000+ affluent, educated and upwardly-mobile individuals and families. 20

TOURCOLLIERVILLE.COM

m a rc h/a pril 20 21

AFFLUENCE Another key demographic metric is the financial status of your community. Typically, the financial well-being of an area directly matches the type of assets in place, so commercial developers and corporations are especially interested in this metric. The median household income in Collierville is $109,335. Almost half of our population falls in the $100,000 - 200,000 median household income zone and nearly 20% of our population brings home over $200,000 per year. That’s powerful. Additionally, Collierville is one of just four Tennessee communities with a Moody’s AAA Bond rating. This speaks to the financial health of our Town overall, while net worth speaks to the financial health of our citizens. The average net worth in Collierville is $1,411,000, and almost 50% of our population has an average net worth over $500,000. Why is this important? A high net worth community can “weather the storm” and survive through economic downturns. Think about this in context of the COVID-19 pandemic, when Collierville experienced strong sales tax revenues, despite grim indicators all around us.

HOUSING Melanie and I moved to Collierville in 1994 from Dallas and purchased our

house for $128,000. Can you imagine? According to the residential data, we could probably sell it for $300,000 today in ten minutes! The Collierville housing market is strong, with a median home value of $328,206 and over 75% of the houses being owner-occupied. So, what does the residential future hold? Currently, Collierville has about a 2.5-year supply of lots available, if the averages hold steady. In 2015, the Demand Institute published a U.S. housing study with an analysis of which cities would see the strongest median increase in the price of single-family homes. Memphis was one of the top cities listed. From what I have seen regionally, I think the Demand Institute was spot on. With our low taxes, low costs and low crime, I am confident our housing appreciation values will remain strong. The numbers help us more fully tell our story, and from what I have seen and continue to see, we have a dynamic story to share.

Before “I Do” A wedding is such an optimistic time at the beginning of a new chapter in life. There is much focus on the dress, the venue, the photography, the guest list, rehearsal and all the beautiful choices involved in planning a wedding! However, the lasting part — the marriage — is the key for a lifelong relationship, and it requires personal investment. Premarital counseling is intended to help couples gain insight and develop skill sets prior to marriage to set a healthy tone for the many years to come. It has similar characteristics to marriage counseling, but premarital counseling isn’t just for troubled couples or marriages. Practical insight into ourselves and our spouse can certainly provide enhancement to relational desires as well as enhance the quality of our lives going forward.

FAITH-BASED COUNSELING Faith-based counseling differentiates from secular counseling as it applies positive Biblical principles from the Creator of marriage. With each person professing their relationship with Jesus Christ, it is a common positive foundation from which marriage is built. Faith-based premarital counseling does not exclude the couple from problems, but provides a common ground framework for solving them. We apply known clinical truths of successful marriages in a practical way. It is an exciting opportunity to

22

TOURCOLLIERVILLE.COM

m a rc h/a pril 2021

gain insight into the value and dynamics between two people. As in most marriage counseling, the goals, values, roles, responsibilities and views of a couple are covered. To establish these items in my practice, I use a book called Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts by Les and Leslie Parrott. This is a book and workbook that couples can do and discuss on your own, which is a resource you can begin with now!

COMMUNICATION However, the number one issue in most marriages is communication. Communication often evolves from individual history. It is usually beneficial to explore our backgrounds, personalities and perspectives on spiritual, financial, sexual and social needs. In premarital counseling, we explore personality differences to gain insight on how to handle conflict and communication in these important areas. We do this by identifying strengths as well as areas for growth for each person. By working individually and then together, the couple can discuss and know ahead of time how to handle conflict constructively. It is like “preventative health” for marriage! In my practice, if the couple is willing to make a very minimal investment, I use an online inventory called PrepareEnrich. Each person completes this inventory totally separately and confidentially. Then we meet together and

discuss the potential strengths and areas for growth. This helps the couple develop personal insight with themselves and their spouse, and develops applicable skills that contribute to long-lasting respect, happiness and friendship for life. It can also be very beneficial to those slugging it out who have been married for years in a not-so-constructive way! In addition, premarital counseling or couple counseling can be customized to address other specific needs that an individual couple is facing. So, I invite you to take the opportunity to enrich this chapter in your lives with faith-based premarital counseling. Make your marriage a happy, fulfilling experience and all God intended it to be!

LOVE WILL

Prevail

L

ove’s relentless pursuit was the star of an otherwise strenuous year. In March 2020, all who were engaged, and eagerly awaiting to exchange vows, were forced to change plans. Some delayed wedding dates while others switched to outdoor venues. Buffets turned into dinners served at spaced tables, or receptions that were postponed altogether. But the greatest of all things remained in every ceremony: LOVE. The focus of matrimony shifted in 2020 from the party to the promise. Catastrophic events tend to help us refocus on what is most important, and weddings could easily be at the very heart of those redefining moments. Couples and guests alike came together — six feet apart, of course — with fresh eyes; not taking note of the minuscule, but rather renewed by the hope inspired by these newlywed couples. Yes, last year’s

weddings brought hope in an otherwise troubling time. The creativity of these couples, who brought people such hope, is unparalleled. Many couples cued up the camera to offer livestreamed ceremonies in an effort to keep loved ones safe, while others placed wedding hashtags on facemasks instead of the typical Koozies®. Despite the obstacles of a difficult year, the union of couples married during the coronavirus era will be stories of legend and mentioned in anniversary toasts for years to come. Tour Collierville has the privilege of sharing several local weddings with you in the following pages which personify that ‘Love Will Prevail’ through all circumstances. We wish all of our newlyweds much love, laughter and a happily ever after!

Almost everything about the wedding industry looks a little different now. In addition to so many special events, honeymoons also took a hit, with travel concerns at an all-time high. However, even if you’re postponing a big trip or secluded getaway, you can still have a honeymoon right here at home. Take a 3-day weekend for your honeymoon and embrace the city where you’ll spend your married life.

Friday - Collierville

Start the evening off right by hiring a local photographer and having a honeymoon photo session on the Collierville Town Square! Then, head over for a pre-dinner cocktail at Highlander Pub before traveling down the Poplar corridor to Jim’s Place Grille for some delicious fine dining — just be sure to make a reservation! When dinner’s done, drive over to Malco Collierville Towne Cinema Grill & MXT, where you can rent out an entire movie theater just for the two of you. Afterward, head downtown to Canopy Memphis Downtown so that you can spend the entire weekend away from laundry, washing dishes and other household chores.

Saturday - Midtown

Sleep in as long as you want, then have brunch at The Beauty Shop — either in one of their cozy booths, or in their outdoor bubbles — which will put you in such a good mood! Spend the rest of the day browsing local boutiques and breweries in the Cooper-Young, Overton Square and Broad Avenue Arts

District neighborhoods. All of them are wonderful places to shop local – make a scavenger hunt for items to find, or try and buy something to remind you of your “trip,” just like you would anywhere else. Then, head to Alchemy Memphis for a cocktail and their incredible tapas for dinner!

Sunday – Downtown

Take it easy on Sunday morning – grab breakfast at The Arcade, bike along the Big River Crossing or head over to Mud Island to mozy along the riverwalk. (Buy two rubber ducks and race them down the Mississippi River model — whoever wins has to buy the other a cheesy souvenir on Beale Street.) Of course, you’ll want Rendezvous for lunch, because what’s a honeymoon without experiencing some local cuisine? Then, take in the sights on a Backbeat Tour, where you’ll learn about Memphis’ history, music and more. Spend some time relaxing at the hotel before walking over to Itta Bena for the full dinner experience (again, make sure

REALTOR TIPS ADVICE FOR NEWLYWED FIRST-TIME HOME BUYERS

Deciding to get married is one of life’s biggest moments, and whether to buy or rent is one of the first and biggest decisions you will make as a couple. It is best not to jump into this big decision without being prepared. Here are a few steps and tips to make sure you can make an informed decision:

DECIDE IF BUYING A HOME MAKES SENSE Buying a home is normally the single biggest purchase a family will make and you need to make sure you are both ready for the commitment. You should ask yourself these questions: • • • • •

How long are we planning on staying in the area? Do we plan on starting a family in the near future? How are our finances? Are we financially ready? Are either of us committed to a lease now? If we did buy, what locations would we consider?

It’s important to go through questions like these to make sure you are ready. For example, if you knew one of your jobs was going to require a move in a year, it might make sense to rent now and buy later.

FIND A REAL ESTATE AGENT THAT IS RIGHT FOR BOTH OF YOU If you think it makes sense to purchase a home, do yourself a favor and employ the services of a professional. Chances are one or both of you have a family friend who is a REALTOR® and who would love to help you along the way. Getting married can be very stressful, especially if you add purchasing a home to the equation. Hiring an experienced agent who will be there to support both of you along the way is one of the best decisions you can make. 42

SET A BUDGET AND GET PRE-APPROVED I recommend sitting down with a local lender before you start looking for a home. Find out what you can qualify for so that you know in which price range to start your search. You also need to sit down with your spouse and figure out a budget so you know what you are comfortable with for a monthly payment. Just remember, this first home is probably not going to be your last, and one of the worst things you can do while starting your marriage is being financially strapped. You should both be comfortable with what you can afford and stick to the budget.

LEARN TO COMPROMISE The home buying process can be challenging for anyone, but it is especially difficult for a newly-married couple who is making such a big financial decision for the first time. I recommend, before you start looking, to both make a list of things that are important to you. Go over this list together and find some common ground. Once you are comfortable, share this with your agent so they can make sure they know your motivations. There will be stressful moments when going through the home buying process, so be patient and understanding with each other and learn to compromise.

HOME TOUR PRESENTED BY: DESIGNER WHOLESALE

A

home renovation does not have to be allencompassing. Instead, you can pick a point of inspiration and change what you want, keep what works and totally reimagine a space into something new – which is exactly what Cindy and Wade Smith did. The Smiths moved into a lovely Collierville home in 2012 but there were parts of the home that they were ready to update by 2020. They started with their master bathroom. “We had a garden tub and a small shower, which didn’t work for us,” said Wade. However, they did want to keep the counters that were original to the bathroom, so they needed someone who could do a partial renovation. Enter Designer Wholesale, who the Smiths chose because they are, as Wade said, “a one-stop shop” for both design and construction. The team at Designer Wholesale helped the Smiths design a large, beautiful tiled shower that would accommodate two shower heads to allow for different water pressures. Despite the size of the new shower, removing the original tub and shower made the bathroom appear so much larger. “It gave us some more space to work with,” said Wade. The new bathroom floor tiles and the two different types of shower tiles were chosen to help incorporate the browns of the original granite countertop, so that the entire bathroom looks brand-new. Designer Wholesale’s

team made recommendations on new bathroom lighting to help complete the space. The Smiths also decided to replace the original window with a custom-made stained-glass window by a local Memphis artist. “We looked through her collection and found one that we loved, so we just made a few color changes,” said Wade. “Previously, we just had to keep the shutters closed all the time because our neighbors are [right next door]” added Cindy. After the bathroom was complete, the Smiths turned their attention to their backyard. “We like to be outside and there wasn’t much we could do with the yard, particularly when the weather was bad,” said Cindy. “And Wade has always wanted an outdoor kitchen area.” So, they set about building exactly that. Outside, Designer Wholesale helped extend the existing porch by laying new concrete, constructed

a covered porch to match the home’s roofline and built cabinets alongside the Smith’s original grill. A TV and a heater were also installed so that the porch can be used any time. “It’s so nice to grill and not get wet,” laughed Cindy. The Smiths also decided to build a firepit, farther out in their yard, and are looking forward to using it yearround. “We have had a couple fires already, with the cooler weather,” said Wade. Together, the projects took about eight months to complete, from the first meeting at the design center to the final touches. “My advice to other renovators would be that it always takes a little longer than you think,” said Cindy. However, the final results are undeniable and the Smiths are looking forward to enjoying the new portions of their home for years to come. story | REGAN HEWITT photos | CINDY B. THYMIUS
