020 is already shaping up to be a special year. As we look back on our 150 years with stories, events, and celebrations, we are also excitedly looking toward the next 150 years and the potential of our growing, small Town. What better way to move forward than taking a minute to explore the origins of our one-of-a-kind small town charm? In doing so, I’ve already learned so much about Collierville, and there’s so much more to come as we move through the year. As we celebrate our past, Collierville residents are still falling in love and making plans. Even though it’s sleeting outside as I’m writing this, spring and warmth is around the corner, and love is in the air. I mentioned 2020 as being a special year, and it will be a special year for me personally because I, too, will be marrying the love of my life in the fall. That said, our bridal issue has taken on a new meaning for me. As I flip through all of the beautiful photography of the couples’ big day, I can’t help but know what they went through in order to make it there! Planning a wedding is no easy feat; from narrowing down the guest list, to making decisions on a full list of vendors (you might need more than you think!), choosing a location, venue, building a wedding website, to details like the colors of the flowers and what songs will be played, are all decisions that you and your soon-to-be will be making. Or, if it all sounds like too much, you might just have a surprise wedding in your brand new home (see pg. 58 in our Square Feet section)! As I look forward to my big day, the woes of wedding planning pale in comparison to my excitement of being able to spend some extra time this year with family and friends. Flipping through these pages, it is unmistakable the outpouring of love and happiness that occurs when such an event takes place. So, Collierville, here’s to warmer weather, weddings, love, happiness, and everything in between! The spring is around the corner, “...and we’re makin’ plans.”

The Town of Collierville’s annual Fair on the Square will celebrate its 45th year this May, thanks to one dedicated club. The Twentieth Century Club was founded in 1950, as a charter of the Collierville Contemporary Club, by a group of Collierville women eager to support their community. In an effort to celebrate the United States Bicentennial in 1976, the Collierville Twentieth Century Club organized the first Fair on the Square festival we all know and love today. From humble beginnings, the first festivals included a handful of vendors and a cake walk. This year’s Fair, set for May 2-3, anticipates record numbers with 200+ local and regional vendors, featuring handmade goods that include jewelry, art, children’s items, clothing, hand-crafted wood furniture and more! This family-friendly Fair drew nearly 10,000 visitors in 2019 to the beautiful Town Square, with shuttle services now available for guests. The Twentieth Century club is proud to announce the following sponsors for 2020: the Town of Collierville, Jim Keras Subaru, OrthoSouth, Hart Properties, and Huey’s. Every year, one Collierville High School student’s artwork is chosen as the poster for the year’s Fair signage. This is just one example of how the Twentieth Century Club is invested in the community. “One of the most rewarding moments of the year is the Grant ceremony,” says Club President Blair Lanier. “To see the recipients’ faces when we award them with their checks makes all the fundraising efforts worth it. I love that all the dollars made go right back into our community.” All profits from the Fair are distributed back into the community

in the form of grants in the club’s four areas of interest: education, environment, art, and community. “Fair on the Square is such a nice reflection of our Town,” remarks Club Marketing Consultant Christopher Myers. “The [Twentieth Century] Club genuinely wants to see the community thrive. The giving of nearly thirty thousand dollars back into the hands of teachers, nonprofits and so on, redistributing those dollars and seeing the ripple effect that has on our economy and community is so rewarding.” Looking for a way to make a difference in the Collierville community? Consider joining the Twentieth Century Club with minimal meeting requirements, $30 yearly dues, and one dedicated weekend to the Fair! Citizens of all ages are encouraged to apply at www.colliervilletwentiethcenturyclub.org

Gardening allows your child to learn about biology through fun, hands-on experiences. Here are a few ways that you can get your child interested in gardening at home:

18

With your child, start off by researching which plants will develop best in your area. Let your child choose which plants they would like to see grow right in their backyard. Then take a trip with your child to purchase the necessary seeds and tools.

If you want to have a more advanced garden, keeping in mind age appropriateness, help your child plant vegetables. It will be rewarding to eat the vegetables that you and your child have helped grow.

Talk with your child about the changes and patterns they notice as the plants begin to grow, and ask them to predict what will happen in the future.

Discuss the different kinds of bugs that you see in the garden. Determine if certain bugs are beneficial or harmful to the garden and why.

Ask your child to draw pictures of what they observe happening in the garden and help them write down what they see.

Keep track of how tall the plants are, and ask your child to use their math and ruler skills to determine how much each plant has grown each week.

As your preschooler “digs deeper” into gardening, they will retain lasting memories of what they have learned.

Teaching your child how to garden is a fun, handson learning experience that encourages patience, imagination and environmental awareness. The best part about learning to garden is that it is something your family can enjoy together, indoors or out!

time. We’re couch potatoes that don’t require a lot of work. And we’ve talked it over… while we would love to be adopted together, we would be equally fine adopted apart. What we want more than anything is to find our forever homes! One last request: if you’re not looking for a new furbaby because you already have one in your home, no matter how old or young you are, please talk to family, friends or neighbors and make plans for your fur babies in case something happens to you. Our human loved us and it was a last resort for us to be taken to the shelter. So please make plans to ensure that doesn’t happen to your four-legged loved ones. Thanks for listening — it’s been so great talking with you! If you have a place in your home for one (or two!) beautiful, four-year-old brown tabby cats, please swing by the shelter and hang out with us. We share a large room and we’d love the company. You may discover we are the Déjà Vu experience you’ve been searching for!

After living together for four years in a quiet home, we were devastated when our beloved owner passed away. Sadly, no one was in a position to care for us, so we were taken to the cat orphanage. When we arrived at the shelter, we felt lost… everything was so strange and we missed our human so much! We curled up together in the back of our kennel for comfort. Later, we overheard the shelter humans talking and they were worried about us. They decided that extra cuddling and playing with us might bring us out of our shell sooner. We would have lost hope if not for their caring spirit and strong cat instincts. We love those feather toys and laser pointers; it was just what the doctor ordered! Fast forward to today and we’ve been at the shelter since July, overlooked due to the large number of kittens here. We get it! They’re so cute, tiny, and playful… we understand why humans want them! But we also appreciate this opportunity to put in a good word for all the adult cats in shelters. Remember, with an adult cat, you see what you get. We’re usually mellower, and you can be certain about size and temperament. We still offer everything you want in a cat — litter box trained, clean and healthy but still playful. In our case, we would likely fit best with adult humans looking for quiet, sweet companionship and quality snuggle

LET’S STORM IT, LET’S KEEP MOVING FORWARD

B

rian Walker was named VFW Post 5066 Commander in 2013, as they merged with Post 1965. Since then, he has helped increase membership as well as the Post’s activity. His presence helped usher in a much-needed $60,000+ renovation and, in 2018, it was the second most active Post in the nation. Now, Walker has worked his way up the ranks of the VFW. Initially, he had to visit Posts all over Tennessee to get elected to the position of State Surgeon. “We start low and build knowledge, so we can get a feel for all the chairs all the way through the VFW,” he explained. As State Jr. Vice Commander, Walker oversees recruiting efforts across the state. “It’s my job to make sure Posts are doing their recruiting and information is getting out,” he said. Larger membership numbers allow the VFW to negotiate with legislators, as well as gives Posts more delegates when the VFW has internal elections. It also creates a positive image in the community. It is that positive image in which Walker remains most invested. “You can’t recruit if you don’t have positive energy in the community and everyone needs to know what we do,” he said. Here, Walker refers to the numerous programs that the VFW offers. In June, when he becomes Senior Vice Commander, he will be in charge of those programs. “To me, programs and recruiting go together. A lot of people don’t understand that the VFW gives away more than $3 million worth of scholarships,” he said. These scholarships serve students, and they also offer awards to teachers and first responders. In Collierville, he wants to reintroduce poppy drives to benefit veterans, and is looking for local stores to put out collection points. “When we do our poppy drives, we get a lot of ‘Wow, I haven’t seen one of these since I was a little kid.’ We want to get back to the roots of this Post,” he said. 22

What Walker is most looking forward to is when he will serve as the State Commander. He will be the first post-9/11 veteran in the position. He stated, “It shows a turning of a chapter in a book. This is no longer a war for our generation, it’s a generational war. That usually grabs the attention of a lot of people.” For 2021-2022, Walker has chosen to put forth a very specific theme: Let’s Roll. “It’s the last known recording from Flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania. I feel it’s only fitting that on the 20th anniversary [of 9/11] that be the theme: Let’s roll. Let’s storm it, let’s keep moving forward,” he said. Collierville will be right behind him when he does. W H AT ’ S As the Town’s Director of Economic Development, I learned that every community claims to have the best schools, wonderful parks, beautiful neighborhoods, and so on. Pick up any economic development magazine, or attend a development related conference, and what you see and hear is a chorus of, “We are the best, we have it all.” This competitive reality soon led me to explore the ways in which Collierville is truly unique. What are corporations, real estate developers, retailers, and restaurateurs seeking as they pursue expansion and relocation options here? As site selection consultant John Boyd states, the five key drivers guiding the headquarters search are: Talent, Access, Lifestyle, Incentives, and Operating Costs. “Finalist cities in our head office searches need to demonstrate that our clients will retain their key management and technical staff in the initial move and enjoy an advantageous recruiting position in the years ahead,” Boyd says. “All head offices demand superior educational facilities, an accommodating housing market, state-of-the-art healthcare, and a cultural and recreational bill of fare,” he adds. The Collierville School System has been consistently rated as one of the top school systems in the region, recently rated by Niche as the #2 Best School District in Tennessee. This success is a testament to our children, their families,

24

THE our school system, and the importance our community places on education. Part of this success is because we initiate a STEM curriculum — Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics — as early as kindergarten! STEM creates an elevated educational path for our students to be fully prepared for future employment, educational, and lifestyle opportunities. Additionally, our vocational programming has deep connections with Landers Auto Group, Wilson Hospitality, and Marriott (just to name a few), which all provide meaningful experiences for our students. The educational quality and depth at the Collierville School System offers corporations a tremendous recruitment and retention tool. In 2014, The Demand Institute reported that from 2000-2014, Collierville enjoyed a 38% increase in median home prices. Our housing market is diverse, from multi-family options in the Schilling Farms area to new custom homes and everything in between. After all, two regional home builders have established their new headquarters in Collierville. Maybe Magnolia Homes and Regency Homebuilders are on to something! Baptist Memorial Hospital-Collierville has been providing quality healthcare to our citizens for 20 years. I cannot imagine living in a community that did not have access to highly-rated healthcare services. BMH-Collierville has radiology

and MRI services, inpatient and outpatient surgery/rehabilitation, diagnostic testing, a sleep disorder center, a women’s center, and a 24-hour full-service emergency room. Additionally, Baptist’s Reynolds Hospice House and Kemmons Wilson Family Center for Good Grief are both considered models for specialty care around the nation. BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee and Aetna have recognized BMH-Collierville for their expertise in hip, knee, and joint replacement. That’s what I call state-of-the-art healthcare. We often talk about Collierville being at “the crossroads of tradition and innovation.” From the 18 miles of trails connecting over 1000 acres of parkland to a Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer designed golf course, from a quiet dining experience on the Town Square to unique culinary experiences along the Houston Levee corridor, Collierville offers a variety of cultural and recreational experiences to satisfy just about everyone. At the end of the day, when promoting our assets in the highly competitive world of economic development, Collierville certainly has a depth and breadth of key differentiators.

AN

UNCONDITIONAL

Commitment

New York Times columnist David Brooks states three different lenses through which we can view marriage—the psychological, the romantic, and the moral. While all these are true, I believe that Brooks left out the most important lens: the spiritual. We’ve got to remember that God created the first marriage when He brought Adam and Eve together in the Garden of Eden. He pronounced His blessing upon their relationship with these profound words found in Genesis 2:24: “For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.” At its core, marriage is a spiritual relationship. Many would agree that love is a vital part of any marriage. What kind of love is everlasting? Secular love, as reflected in Hollywood entertainment, will ultimately lead to disappointment and a crushed heart. This kind of love basically asks the question, “What can you do for me today?” This selfish approach to love lends itself to manipulation and can get ugly in a hurry. God never intended for any spouse to meet all of your needs. That’s something only Jesus can do. Read 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8 together: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” This spiritual love allows your relationship to grow and be fruitful. We desperately need spiritual love if our marriage is going to reach its full potential. When I counsel a young couple who is about to get married, I give them this definition—love is an unconditional commitment to an imperfect person. Only the 26

Lord can infuse this kind of selfless, sacrificial, and spiritual love into a relationship. Spiritual love asks the question, “What can I do to help you be the best you can be today?” Ministry to your partner is the emphasis. Is your marriage built on this spiritual love? You will notice that spiritual love is action-oriented. Here are some simple actions that you can take to build life-giving spiritual love in your marriage:

• Put Jesus first in your relationship. • Read the Bible and pray together. • Make worship in one of our local churches a priority. • Forgive your spouse when they disappoint you. • Respect your differences. • Spend quality time together. • Encourage your spouse. • Articulate your love on a regular basis. • Guard your relationship like it is a priceless jewel. I pray that you will incorporate the spiritual lens as you view your own marriage. May the Lord bless you, and keep you, your marriage, and your family!

When you attend a wedding, all five senses are engaged.

Multi-sensory events are the most memorable and when

sight, touch, sound, smell and taste are delighted, so are the wedding guests. Imagine with us for a moment, all of

the wonderful ways your senses can be stimulated during a wedding ceremony and reception.

The Sights: The sweet expression on the groom’s face

when he gets his first glimpse of his beautiful bride coming down the aisle. The couple’s romantic first dance among

family and friends. The stunning views of an outdoor location or the intimate lighting of an indoor venue.

The Sounds: The whistles and applause as the couple is

pronounced man and wife. The peals of laughter as Uncle

John busts a move on the dance floor. The sound of the band playing a classic tune or the DJ taking you down memory lane with a throwback.

The Feels: The elegant paper of your wedding invitation,

program, and menu cards. The silk or lace on the bride’s

gorgeous gown. The touch of the table linens at the reception. A hug from an old friend or family member in attendance.

The Scents: Fragrant candles fill the ceremony space.

Aromatic food being passed at the reception. Floral scents wafting from table centerpieces.

The Tastes: The delicious hand-picked meal by the

bride and groom served at the reception. The sweet, flavorful wedding cake that melts in your mouth. The surprise ingredient in the signature cocktail drink.

The union of these senses at a wedding produce

everlasting memories in our mind’s eye. We’re able to recall

the joy and significance of the moment, because we truly experience ‘A Touch of Romance’. Tour Collierville has the

privilege of sharing several local weddings with you in the following pages that have embraced ‘all the little things’ that made their big day special.

We wish all of our newlyweds much love, laughter and a

happily ever after!

n a chilly February night in 1978, two outgoing personalities agreed to a blind date with friends in Jackson, TN. Bob, who was 28 at the time, worked for the local Jackson Sun newspaper. Relatively new to the area, he got involved with coworkers outside of the office coaching youth baseball. Beth, 23, grew up in town and because of her love for children, became an elementary school teacher. Their happy dispositions and mutual affection toward children made Bob and Beth’s friends confident they would be a good match.

Three couples met at a local, high-end steakhouse to celebrate one couple’s anniversary. It was shortly after Valentine’s Day, on Feb. 18th, and love was in the air. “There was one thing about that night [first date] that stands out,” recalls Bob. “It was the first time we had ever tried tempura mushrooms, and we absolutely fell in love with them. So every time we went to that restaurant after that, we would order the tempura mushrooms.” Beth recalls the memory and chimes in, “Oh yes! I remember that Bob! After the date, I remember going back to work the next

week, and everyone asked ‘Well, how was your date?’ I just remember telling them that he was such a gentleman. That is what I remember most!” The food was great, the conversation easy, and the fun continued. Shortly after the couple whose anniversary they celebrated went home, Bob, Beth and their friends pulled a prank worth remembering. “One thing about that night too, I think that made it extra fun, was after the couple who had their anniversary went home, the rest of us went to the grocery store and we bought a large volume of toilet paper and we rolled the trees in the front yard of their house,” chuckles Bob. Beth quickly replies, “I had never done that before, but we sure did have a good laugh about that!”

“Sometimes you just know. It wasn’t a spur of the moment thing, but I knew within days of our first date.” -Bob Vornbrock The excitement from the first date ran into the days and weeks ahead, where the two would get together as often as they could. “Beth lived in a duplex townhouse in Jackson,” recollects Bob, “and in those couple weeks leading up, there’s the story about me bringing donuts and coffee to Beth’s apartment on Saturday mornings.” Beth starts in to tell the story, “A retired minister and his wife lived across the street from me at the time, that were good friends with my parents. I remember them telling my mom, ‘Well he leaves every night’ and then she would say, ‘but he comes back with a little bag of something every morning’ which of course were the donuts!” Their courtship lasted four weeks before Bob dropped to one knee in Beth’s apartment to ask for her hand in marriage. “Sometimes you just know. It wasn’t a spur of the moment thing,” says Bob, “but I knew within days of our first date.” Shortly after proposing, the couple went to tell Beth’s family. “We’d only known each other for about four weeks,” says Bob, “so we ended up telling them [her family] we’d known each other for six weeks,” as they

both pause in laughter. “Four weeks sounded ridiculous. Six weeks seemed okay!” Bob didn’t have the ring in hand when he proposed, but ironically the couple went to pick out Beth’s ring on April Fools Day! In a little over four months from their first date, Bob and Beth Vornbrock were married on July 1st, 1978 among family and friends. They will celebrate 42 years of marriage this year and both agree that trust is the foundational building block to a solid marriage. “I’ve told people over the years that God sent me an angel. Her faith has helped me and her steadfastness has inspired me. I really have nothing lacking in my life because of that. I mean, what’s not to like about Beth?” says Bob. “He is patient and kind,” shares Beth. “He has always been one to keep the laughter going and put forth the extra effort to make time for one another. I’m just so happy where we are and where we’ve been with our lives.” Even after 42 years of marriage, the laughter and love between the Vornbrocks is still very much alive. story | ANNA BELL

ucked along a winding road in Arlington is a historical estate nestled on 20 acres of Tennessee countryside. Turn into a majestic tree-lined drive where guests are greeted by more than forty Eastern Red Cedar trees. At the point of honor in front of the current home site stands a magnificent magnolia tree that is impossible to miss. The land sings with the soothing whispers of historical richness from the moment you set foot onto the property. The story of 12055 Donelson Road dates back to 1830 when Alexander Donelson, nephew of President Andrew Jackson, and his wife became one of the first permanent settlers in the area. Donelson built a home which he would name Orion Hill. Visible almost directly overhead the home site is the constellation Orion, which is believed to be the reason for

the name. Orion Hill was meant to replicate the Hermitage (President Jackson’s historic mansion) down to the same majestic cedar and magnolia trees that can be seen today. The estate was home to several generations before burning down in the 1920s. - Shelby Hartman For a period of time, the property was dilapidated and overgrown, until the 1990s when Dr. and Mrs. Lester Graves built a Greek revival style home on the site of the original Donelson house. The architecture of the home includes a gable, low-pitched roof, dentil cornices with wide bands of trim, Doric columns and entry doors with rectangular transom lights. Much of this has been preserved by the current owners Don and Cathy Wilson, who purchased the property in 2018. Since the transfer of ownership, preservation efforts have been made by the Wilsons. They have applied for “Heritage Status” in hopes that Orion Hill would qualify as a state identified arboretum and tree sanctuary. The Shelby County Historical Commission has also since granted Orion Hill a historic marker.

The Wilsons, along with their daughter and son-in-law, Shelby and Adam Hartman, have made alterations to the home to accommodate the wedding and event venue they are excited to share with guests. Renovations began in March 2019 and concluded in September of last year. Ledford Architects of Arlington designed the floor plan, and Dan Rutledge Construction LLC of Collierville managed the renovations. A 3,400 square foot addition was made to the back of the home for a ballroom. Other renovations include outdoor ceremony location accessibility, boardwalk onto the lake, grooms quarters and more. This now 10,000 square foot venue has ample space for both indoor and outdoor needs and can accommodate 300 guests. “I went to Arlington High School and I grew up passing this very street, going to and from

my parents’ house,” recalls Shelby. “My parents say they’ve driven past here 30-something years and little did we all know! Of course there have been hurdles turning a house into a

commercial property and wedding venue, but we’ve worked hard to make it so brides feel like they’re getting married at a family-friend’s house. We want you to feel at home when you’re here! With my wedding industry background, I have approached everything from a videographers’ perspective and my concentration on the little details is what sets us apart and makes us special. My family and I have really put our hearts into [Orion Hill]. We want our guests to utilize every square inch of this space, and enjoy the beauty all around this property!” Find inspiration and beautiful views when you celebrate your big event at the area’s best kept secret, Orion Hill. story | Anna Bell photos | NLA WEDDINGS

REALTOR TIPS DELIGHTFUL SUBURBAN LOCALITY

It has been said that the three most important things in real estate are location, location, location. I agree with this statement wholeheartedly. It is as true today as it was 150 years ago. Collierville was not an accident; its great location combined with some great leaders over the years have allowed Collierville to grow into one of the premier suburban locations in Tennessee. In honor of Collierville’s 150th birthday I thought it would be interesting to take a look back in time and see what Collierville was, compared to what it is today, and what I found was very interesting. Take a look at this excerpt from a booklet published by the Southern Publicity Company on behalf of the Town of Collierville in 1913: “With its most enviable location, blest with nature’s hand and peopled by progressive, up-to-date business men, with a law abiding and first-class citizenship, it is destined to be a large suburban residential city of homes. Collierville with the exception of Memphis, is the largest town in Shelby County and has a population of about 2,000. A portion of this population is composed photos | NANCY BASSETT

of business men of Memphis who have their permanent homes here; the distance from Collierville to Memphis being only twenty-four miles and on the Southern Railway, the “Premier Carrier of the South,” which operates a passenger service of six trains daily, to and from Memphis, including a motor car service, an inducive feature that a number of business men of Memphis especially are taking advantage of by selecting a home site and building a home in this, the most healthful and delightful suburban locality, and in fact the only suburban locality that offers rural home comforts combined with city life, and within such easy reach and access of this metropolis. With the elevated location, splendid natural drainage, pure water, unexcelled school facilities, churches, numerous splendid homes and surrounded by

While this was written in 1913, its theme is very similar to what makes Collierville such a great location today. Even though this was more than a hundred years ago, people still wanted the same things they want today: a safe place to do business and raise a family with good schools. Collierville has always been an important center for commerce and trade and an integral part of West Tennessee’s growth over the last 150 years. It has been a blessing for my family to be a part of the last forty-one years. It has been an amazing run, but I think Collierville’s best years are ahead of us!

as rich and fertile lands as are to be found anywhere in the country, and the climate is about as near perfectly temperate as could be desired. The constructive improvements at Memphis this year (1913) will amount in round figures to about $20,000,000. Why should not

HOME TOUR PRESENTED BY: DESIGNER WHOLESALE

HOME IS Where the Heart is A DESIG NER WHOLESALE HOME

Home is where the heart is – which is why one local couple decided to tie the knot in their newly designed living room. An ‘at home’ wedding takes the cake as far as sentimental wedding venues go, so imagine saying vows in your new Collierville dream home and emotions are sure to go through the roof (pun intended)!

S

even months prior to the event, Linda Morris and Jon Casello had purchased a home with good bones, site unseen! The couple hired Adam Watson with Keller Williams Realty as their real estate agent and when Adam FaceTimed the couple from the open house, they knew it was meant to be. “It [the home] checked all our boxes,” says Linda, “and I remember telling Jon we’ve got to have this house!” With Linda newly retired and Jon travelling often as a FedEx pilot, the couple decided to hire local contractor and owner of Designer Wholesale by Capital Construction, Justin Herter, to make their dreams a reality. “From the very beginning, I had full trust

in Justin,” shares Linda. “I loved how well he communicated with me and he was so organized from the very first meeting.” Linda immediately fell in love with a model kitchen at Designer Wholesale during her consultation. “I remember sitting at the table and she [Linda] looked over and said, ‘That’s what I want’,” laughs Justin. “I said, ‘Which part?’ and she says, ‘No, I want all of it,’ I mean the backsplash, down to the countertops and the rubbing on the cabinets that gave it a modern farmhouse look. She wanted the whole thing, which made things easy!” To accomodate Jon’s height, Justin

adjusted the kitchen island. “Normally an island is 36 inches, but Jon is six foot three inches tall,” said Linda. “When he suggested a taller island I was like ‘No - all you’re going to see when you walk in is a huge island.’ But we talked to Justin about it and ended up making the island 42 inches. Justin encouraged us and said ‘it’s going to look good.’ Same thing with the herringbone tile in the kitchen! They laid this tile piece-bypiece and it just makes the room.” Linda also hired Jaime Strong Interior Design Services to help in conjunction with Designer Wholesale for space planning, selecting soft goods, and furniture. Jaime was dedicated to a cohesive flow throughout the home. “Linda is a minimalist, so I wanted to create functional rooms for them that were aesthetically pleasing,” says Jaime. “So in the dining room, it’s very monochromatic with the use of cooler colors, the soft blues and blue grays. The artwork [throughout the house] was custom painted for her. I selected all of her colors, fabrics and then created the

art based on the size of the walls and where I thought, as a designer, they should be.” The master bedroom and bathroom transformed into an oasis for the couple. Designer Wholesale contractor, Justin Herter, had a role in getting a master bed with a hideaway TV fit for a king! Unique in every way, this cedar king bed has a television lift and hiding space for all cords and outlets. Built just for them, Linda says “This bed is a dream! We couldn’t be happier with it and I love how everything, even the cable box is hidden!” From the bedroom into the bathroom, you can see how these spaces were made for Jon and Linda. “The master bathroom turned into a special project,” says Justin. “Linda wanted to get rid of the original tub and expand the shower, and I remember her saying, ‘We’re dying here so give me the biggest shower I can have!’” laughs Justin, “and we were happy to do that for them. It turned out really nice!” The Casellos made plans to surprise family and friends at their housewarming get together in January 2020. Celebrating the new house and Jon’s birthday brought their daughters in town and Jon suggested to Linda beforehand that they should have the celebration at home. “Jon said, ‘We’re going to have everybody at our house, our dream house that we built together. Why don’t we get married here and surprise everybody!’ And within two weeks, we had the whole thing planned,” says Linda. “It was truly a surprise!” One visitor stood out at the gathering that family and friends did not recognize. It wasn’t until everyone gathered in the ‘Hearth Room’ that the stranger shared he was a reverend and would marc h /ap r i l 2020

perform Linda and Jon’s ceremony at that very moment. “It makes my heart so happy that we chose to get married in our home,” shares Linda. “The timing of everything: Jon and I meeting, making our home together; everything happened at the perfect time.”

Justin Herter has been in the business of renovating and decorating homes for almost 20 years. He started out with a painting business, but quickly became a general contractor and owner of Capital Construction in 2001, which has consistently earned an A+ from the Mid-South Better Business Bureau. In 2011, he also became the owner of a ServiceMaster franchise for renovation and reconstruction work. Over the past three years, Justin has narrowed his field of expertise to kitchen and bath remodels and renovations. Alongside his wife, Destiny, Justin opened his Designer Wholesale showroom over two years ago right here in Collierville, offering a true one-stop shopping experience for anyone remodeling a home or working with a contractor. 60
