LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Shannon Essary
“The whole idea of music, from the beginning of time, was for people to be happy.”
creative direction Michael Stires
-Robert Plant
There is healing in music. Whether soothing a broken heart or in need of motivation to finish that last mile, music changes perspective. It has a remarkable and almost indescribable way of reaching down into the soul, and filling it with joy, peace, ambition - whatever you may need it for, it is here. Music is ageless, timeless, and sometimes simply an escape. The last couple years, the May/June issue has evolved into a ‘music’ issue. This time, as it is Memphis’ bicentennial year, it’s a little more special. Memphis is known for its music and has made quite an impact on the industry as a whole, which is undoubtedly embraced by all the Memphis suburbs. If there’s one thing we’ve found that Colliervillians can’t get enough of, it’s music, especially 901 music. As you flip through the pages, you’ll discover how our community can connect to its musical roots - whether at one of the upcoming music festivals, streaming local musicians’ work on your devices, or listening to bluegrass jam sessions on the Town Square. Oh, and of course, better weather means beautiful weddings, new home projects, and more things to do. That said, we’ve included expert contributor editorials, recent wedding announcements, a DIY project, fashion trends, and much more. We think we’ve got you covered, no matter the upcoming occasion. So… grab a seat, crank up some tunes, and let’s start summer on a high note!

Diamond
Hi there! My name is Diamond. I’m a resident at the Collierville Animal Shelter. I wanted to tell you all about my favorite day there so far, but first I have to tell you about a group called ‘Dogs Playing for Life.’ It’s an organization that travels the country teaching shelters how to let their dogs PLAY! That’s right, I said PLAY. You see, play groups are a game-changing enrichment tool for shelters. In fact, play groups allow emotional and behavioral benefits to blossom in a way that wouldn’t be seen in most shelter environments. CAS sponsored the event and invited local rescue groups and shelters to share in and benefit from learning personality assessment, safe play, and confidence building in us four-legged shelter pups. First, the humans attended a course, then put their new knowledge to work with what was, in my opinion, the best idea ever: two days of supervising us in play groups

outside in the play yard. That’s right: big, small, old, young, softies, herders, and rowdies - we were all out there together playing our hearts out! As a chill, low-rider lady, with a couch potato personality, I wasn’t prepared for how much I enjoyed playing! I heard the humans marvel at me more than any dog, because apparently they were worried I wouldn’t enjoy the interaction. I’ll admit, I tend to fuss and bark when I pass the other dog’s gates sometimes, but it’s just for show. I didn’t know how to tell the humans that I do that only because barrier gates are a stressor for me. I surprised them by revealing how much I love the company of other doggos! I’m really excited about this play time moving forward. The humans said it will help make us all socially healthy, give us a mental and physical outlet, enhance our quality of life and help them better assess
our personalities, resulting in even better adoption matches! And boy, did we all sleep good that first night. I’m pretty sure I heard Stanley snoring… The shelter is a wonderful place because the humans here love on us, are protective of us, and want the best for us. I’m excited that the humans coming to the shelter will know even more about our personalities now, and can watch us interact with other dogs. Hopefully this will encourage adoptions and even more of us will find our forever homes! Remember…
Dogs have the powerful ability to forgive, let go of the past, and live each day joyously. - Jennifer Skiff Julie Weaver. Collierville Animal Services is located at 559 E. South Street, Collierville. Call 901-457-2670 or come by to find your perfect companion!

When Preparation Meets Opportunity t’s the summer of 1984, and Collierville is happy. The birds are singing, and the flowers are in bloom. On the Town Square, two brothers sit, crouched in the alley of 110 North Main Street. They confide in one another, sharing stories of adventure, and discussing the latest movie trailers. One says to the other, “I guess it’s time for lunch, huh?” The other responds with a simple nod, before they stand up and walk next door to the local hamburger joint - Mensi’s. In the mornings, their dad, John, would drop them off behind his office building, where he housed his real estate company’s yard signs. His sons, Allen and Michael, were responsible for seeing to and maintaining the company’s signs. After a few hours of work, when it was time for lunch, they would order a couple of cheeseburgers and milkshakes and bask in the freedom of summer. What would become a Collierville landmark was a young Allen and Michael Green’s favorite summertime spot. Little did they know that,

thirty-five years later, they would be the ones leading the development of such a nostalgic piece of property, where they shared so many memories. It’s almost poetic that these young men are the two to introduce Collierville to its newest district - Washington Square.
Company Realtors’® 40th year anniversary, and they’re doing a lot to reinforce the phrase: Building Neighbors for 40 Years. I was fortunate enough to sit down with Allen, Michael, and their father, John, to discuss forty years of history, and after speaking with them, it’s easy to see how these words embody the work that they have performed in and around Collierville since 1979. It began in 1978, when John Green decided to visit one of Collierville’s local car dealerships to purchase a maroon 1978 Chevrolet Caprice Classic. Green was working in Memphis at the time, but fell in love with the town and moved here soon after: “It [Collierville] reminded me of where I come from, and I wanted to open up a real estate office.” In the spring of 1979, John Green went on to found John Green & Company Realtors® out of a one-man office on the Collierville Town Square.
Collierville’s Director of Economic Development, John Duncan, writes about the future of this property in great detail on pages 32-33. However, this year is John Green &
John Green and Company’s humble beginnings eventually led to great success, as a full-service residential and commercial
real estate company. Green began building relationships with his employees, agents, and the community. A handful of John’s first employees and agents remain with the company today, including Allen and Michael who, nearly five years ago, succeeded their father as owners. Michael, John’s youngest son, notes how important these people are to their family and company: “... They’re all like family. Our employees are like family, and our agents are as well.” The company has now sold an estimated 10,500 homes throughout Collierville, Germantown, Memphis, and parts of Mississippi.
WE’VE HAD A LOT OF LONGEVITY WITH OUR AGENTS, AND MOST OF OUR AGENTS ARE EXPERIENCED AND HAVE BEEN WITH US FOR A LONG TIME. THEY’RE ALL LIKE FAMILY. OUR EMPLOYEES ARE LIKE FAMILY, AND OUR AGENTS ARE AS WELL. - Michael Green John Green & Co. Realtors®
If you’ve visited the Town Square recently, you may have noticed the construction of John Green & Company’s 6,000 square foot office building that will become the company’s headquarters of operations. Allen and Michael hope that this building will serve as a “thank you” to their thirty or so agents, old and new, as it provides them with a special opportunity to connect with the Collierville community in a unique way. Additionally, the building will feature a rooftop venue that overlooks the Town Square. They’re calling it Rooftop on the Green, and it will serve the community as a space available for events and other social gatherings. Besides constructing the Town Square’s newest building in nearly fifteen years, they’re also developing its newest neighbor, Washington Square. Allen and Michael are
confident that this area will become a destination for the community, and that Collierville’s residents will enjoy simply visiting the Square before deciding where to eat or hang out.
COLLIERVILLE IS ITS FAMILIES. WE THINK THAT WASHINGTON SQUARE WILL BECOME A DESTINATION AREA, AND HOPE THAT, ‘HEY, WHERE SHOULD WE GO EAT?’ BECOMES ‘LET’S JUST GO TO THE SQUARE AND WASHINGTON SQUARE AND SEE WHAT’S GOING ON,’ AS MORE THINGS START HAPPENING. - Allen Green John Green & Co. Realtors®
Allen and Michael are also upholding their father’s tradition of supporting the local community. John Green founded the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon in 1988 and the Collierville Education Foundation in 1996. Since then, Allen and Michael have continued to support the local school system. Michael currently sits on the board of the CEF, and the company continues to support Collierville’s youth through various sponsorships and programs. Just recently, the company signed a $1,500 check in support of Collierville Elementary School’s robotics team and its trip to a world championship competition. They’re also happy to be sponsoring this year’s Summer Concert Series presented by Main Street Collierville, as they have done in the past. John Green concluded our interview by thanking Collierville: “Everything we’ve got is because of Collierville, so we’re building a nice building, and we’re trying to invest in Collierville because it’s been so good to us. A lot of people just pick up and leave, but we’re here to stay.” Allen and Michael said that their dad would always recite the saying, “luck is preparation meeting opportunity.” John Green & Company Realtors® has spent the last forty years preparing for today’s opportunities, and now, they are poised to capitalize on them in a way that is sure to positively impact Collierville’s community for years to come. by Nicholas Cotros illustration by Michael Stires

THE
POWER
OF
MUSIC
“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life - to everything.” - Plato MUSIC INSPIRES. MUSIC COMFORTS. MUSIC HEALS. MUSIC UNITES. MUSIC TEACHES. MUSIC STIMULATES. MUSIC TRANSFORMS.
If you ever take a moment and think about music - just in general, not your favorite kind - and its impact on our lives, you come to realize how powerful, sublime, and important music is. From popular music to soundtracks, theme songs, orchestral masterpieces, and even tribal traditions, music in one form or another has been an integral part of the human experience for as long as we can remember. Without it, life would not sparkle, and it would almost certainly be extremely dull. As a form of entertainment, we derive tremendous amounts of pleasure from listening to live and prerecorded music. The energy devoted to enjoying music as entertainment, from listening to dancing to performing, is absolutely awesome. As a species, we thrive when we experience music. Music makes us uniquely human. It’s a small wonder then, that giving the gift of music to our children has been proven to be so important. Back to Plato: “I would teach children music,
physics, and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning.” Several millennia ago, even the ancient scientists and philosophers recognized the importance of music in a civilized society - how much more important it is in a modern, tech-based fastmoving world!
Type in the keywords ‘children+music+benefits,’ and you will instantly find a wealth of resources, organizations, projects, efforts, and individuals out there trying to make the world a better place through music education to children. If we all agree that children are the future, then don’t we want the future to be joyful and inspired?
Music enhances the education of our children by helping them to make connections and broadening the depth with which they think and feel. If we are to hope for a society of culturally literate people, music must be a vital part of our children’s education. -Yo-Yo Ma
How can we, as individuals, help to cause ripple effects in the world? By ensuring that music is introduced and taught to our children. Watching them smile as they learn to play an instrument. Seeing the flush of excitement on their faces once they can perform a song. Applauding their efforts after their first performance. Encouraging them to grow more and deeper through their experience in the arts. So, do you want to impact the world for the better? Find a local place that offers music lessons for children and help yours discover their talent. Musicians believe that everyone has the ability for music - it just sometimes takes effort to develop it. Shinichi Suzuki once said: “Musical ability is not an inborn talent, but an ability which can be developed. Any child who is properly trained can develop musical ability, just as all children develop the ability to speak their mother tongue. The potential of every child is unlimited.” That means the future is unlimited. And so is your impact to make the world a better place through music.

JOYFUL
NOISE Many variables go into making a worship service happen. I am the worship pastor at The Orchard Church, and part of my job is to not only plan the worship set of songs each week for our services, but to create an atmosphere that invites people to see and engage with Jesus. When preparing and organizing for the week, I reflect on seven core values, two of which really shaped me as a worship leader.
“LEAD FROM LOVE” This core value is all about glorifying God, framing how one leads worship. Glorifying God is the ultimate, absolute, and all-pervasive reason for who we are and everything we do. It’s not about us, but about helping others to see God. We believe that entertainers lead for love and acceptance, and worship leaders lead from love and acceptance. Entertainers perform for people and worship leaders lead people. We don’t aim to entertain; we desire to lead the congregation to Christ for the glory of God from His love and acceptance.
catching a glimpse of the triune God in His holiness, His goodness, and His grace. People express their experience with God in different ways, some lift their hands, some close their eyes, some focus intently, and some sing at the top of their lungs. I love getting to see the different expressions of worship, knowing people are powerfully experiencing and recognizing an aspect of God, which is changing their lives in that moment. What a privilege it is for my job to be to help design these indescribable moments each week, when the people of God meet together to delight in singing praises to our God.
Everything within me wants to pay tribute to Him. Whenever the poor and humble hear of His greatness, they will celebrate too! Come and lift up the Eternal with me; let’s praise His name together! - Psalm 34:3-4, VOICE Translation
“CLIMB THE HILL” The gospel is central to worship. Louie Giglio, pastor of Passion City Church, says it like this, “Without the cross there is no song to sing.” Christ climbed the hill to Calvary to die for the sins of the whole world. We must never forget the gospel in our worship. When I look at the set list and service flow each week I am constantly asking the question, “Where is our remembrance of the gospel in our song set this week?” My prayer as a worship pastor is that when the worship team and I lead from love and climb the hill in our worship services, it will create an atmosphere for people to experience God through music. It is truly indescribable to see others

Author and music director, Bob Kaufin, says it like this, “The Savior has rescued us that we might sing the song of the redeemed. May we sing it well. May we sing it constantly. May we sing it passionately. May we sing it for His glory and the advancing of His gospel until the time comes when our songs will never end.”

INVESTING
IN
TRADITION We often describe Collierville as “…at the crossroads of tradition and innovation.” With the award winning Town Square, the new state-of-the-art High School, FedEx World Technology Center, an abundance of neighborhoods and churches, miles and miles of trails connecting our stellar park system, and over 3,600 corporate headquarters jobs, Collierville offers a unique blend of yesterday and tomorrow. Home builders, office developers, manufacturing organizations, hoteliers, as well as restaurants and retailers, continue to invest in our community because they fully understand the value and impact of these investments in a premier community like Collierville, Tennessee. One such visionary investor is John Green & Company Realtors®. John Green & Company ventured into Collierville in 1978, describing it as, “the pot of gold at the end of the Poplar rainbow.” For 40 years, John Green & Company has been providing residential real estate services with over $1B in home sales since they first opened their doors in 1979. Today, John Green’s sons, Allen and Michael, manage the growing and diverse real estate organization, continuing the legacy of customer service and strategic development first established by their father. The Washington Square development, emerging off of the Square’s East side, on Washington Street, illustrates the investment and commitment the Green family has made in our community. With over 15,000 square feet of 32

redeveloped space, Washington Square will soon be a key destination for Collierville citizens and visitors. Indianola, Mississippi-based pizza restaurant, Lost Pizza Company will be the anchor tenant at Washington Square, occupying the 3,000 square foot centerpiece building. Lost Pizza manages 14 restaurants, from Jonesboro, Arkansas to Pensacola, Florida, with the majority of the stores located in Mississippi. Collierville will soon be sampling Lost Pizza’s award winning fare, to include pizza products named The Happy Hippie, The Pitt Boss, and The Lucille. In addition to pizza, Lost Pizza also offers sandwiches, pasta, salads, starters, desserts, and a kids menu. Domestic, imported, and craft beers will also be available. The Collierville store will be managed by Tim Gaines, who also runs the Southaven, MS restaurant. Restaurant plans show a party room for larger gatherings. Located next door to Lost Pizza is a multi-tenant, 10,000 square foot building. Michael and Allen Green expect at least 4 tenants in this building, including another restaurant with different products and services compared to Lost Pizza. At the moment, this restaurant announcement is still in process, but all indications suggest another high quality establishment moving to Washington Square. Residential home designer, Jeff Bramlett Designs will occupy 2,000 square feet of this available space, bringing his innovative home design concepts. Mensi’s Dairy Bar, a Collierville tradition off of the Town Square, will continue to provide burgers, dogs, and
fries, as well as ice cream, shakes, and malts. The Greens have reinvested in this space, with new lighting, seating, umbrellas, and a decorative iron fence. Since the upgrades, Mensi’s has experienced a nice spike in business. On the southeast corner of the Town Square, between the railroad tracks and Highlander Scottish Pub, Michael and Allen Green are developing a multi-story building, which will be the new home of John Green & Company Realtors®. This 6,000 square foot structure will house the offices of the company, providing a comfortable and high-end meeting and work space for clients and employees. “We continue to work hard to differentiate ourselves,” said Allen Green. “Relationships and connectivity are still vitally important in our business… this new space will allow us to elevate the relational component of our business model,” he shared. In addition to a balcony overlooking the Town Square, the building will have a 2,000 square foot shell available for a restaurant, office, or retail use.

n 2015, I was working at Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom as a photographer. In addition to my passion for photography, I always loved music, and enjoyed being a part of friends’ ventures into music as they worked to get gigs around Memphis and elsewhere. Eventually I realized that with the rise of social media, people began to want not only information, but images, quicker. As I thought through ways to combine my two interests and my love for Memphis, 901Music was born. 901Music’s goal is to provide live coverage of large-scale music events in Memphis and beyond. We wanted to go out and cover large Pop music shows and festivals (E.g., OneDirection at Soldier Field in Chicago, 102.7 KIIS’s Wango Tango in Los Angeles, the American Music Awards in Los Angeles, iHeart Radio’s Jingle Ball in Dallas), garner the fans from those events, then come back to Memphis and cover local shows. The fans/followers we collect would then be in-tune with the Memphis music scene. We work hard to accomplish this goal, although the avenues in which we accomplish it are ever-evolving and improving. A lot of the work is now done in the background. As Laura and I begin to be hired to shoot events like the Billboard Music Awards and American Music Awards, we still love and are passionate about bringing recognition to the Memphis music scene. When we shoot events that are not for 901Music, we find opportunities to talk about what’s going on in our city and the artists that make the music scene so vibrant. We’re excited about continuing to pursue our original mission of bringing awareness to the Memphis music scene. One of our favorite things is still shooting local shows. With Spring and Summer rolling in, we wanted to give you a preview of some of our favorite venues for enjoying music, and some of the shows we’re particularly excited about.

In May… 5 FRIDAYS OF FREE JAZZ This lively series of free jazz concerts come courtesy of the Levitt Shell and the Memphis Library Foundation. All performances are at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library in East Memphis, and are very family-friendly. No librarians telling you to shush at these concerts! Food trucks are on site. Talented jazz instrumentalists and composers The Maguire Twins perform at the final concert of the year on May 3. GERMANTOWN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER GPAC offers luxury and an upscale, more formal experience. The venue has an acoustically perfect 868-seat main stage theatre, a black box theatre, and two outdoor performance spaces. It’s a lovely space for a variety of world-renowned artists in classical music, jazz, Broadway, ballet, and more. Although performers come from all over, we are especially happy to see the season finale of the incredibly talented Germantown Symphony Orchestra on May 11.

BAR DKDC Located in the historic and eclectic Midtown neighborhood of Cooper Young, Bar DKDC offers patrons an intimate space to enjoy some sweet soul music. It’s a fun and funky little place with cool art and décor from around the world, a vintage photo booth, and a revolving menu of delectable global street food. Most shows are late-night, and one we are looking forward to is the midnight performance of
Mississippi guitarist-singer-songwriter Jimbo Mathus on May 18. RIVER SERIES AT THE HARBOR TOWN AMPHITHEATER Tucked into the quaint downtown Harbor Town neighborhood, just off the Mighty Mississippi, this small outdoor venue is a hidden gem. The River Series offers concertgoers the chance to see wonderful local and national bands in a beautiful, intimate setting. West African-inspired Obruni Dance Band and singer-guitarist Yazan will perform on May 19. THE GREEN ROOM AT CROSSTOWN CONCOURSE The Green Room’s acoustically treated space and state of the art audio-visual equipment combine for a premier listening experience. This delightful lounge-style space is located in the amazingly cool Crosstown Concourse – a meticulously renovated former Sears Merchandise Distribution Center built in the 1920s. The Green Room is surrounded by options for dining and shopping before or after a show, and is an excellent venue for enjoying a variety of musical performances such as acclaimed Memphis artist Chris Milam on May 23.

In June… HI TONE A long running venue with a very cool vibe, the Hi Tone is in the heart of the up and coming Crosstown neighborhood. This standing-room-only funky dive bar offers live music, and tasty food almost every night of the week. The late-night acts showcase hip and happening underground music. One we are really looking forward to is Japanese rock trio The 5.6.7.8’s on June 1. MINGLEWOOD HALL Located in a beautifully renovated building in Midtown, Minglewood Hall can accommodate 1,600 guests and attracts popular acts from all genres – from indie band Bon Iver to reggae band The Wailers, from hip hop legend Snoop Dogg to classic rock icon Elvis Costello. As an added bonus, several cool businesses are located in the Minglewood Plaza, such as a dance studio, a local radio station, and the 1884 Lounge, a more intimate venue that hosts some awesome local talent. We are looking forward to singer-songwriter John Moreland in the 1884 Lounge on June 11, and Grammy winning jazz and funk collective Snarky Puppy in the main hall on June 12. FEDEXFORUM In Downtown Memphis, you’ll find FedExForum, home of the Memphis Grizzlies and the University of Memphis Tigers. When it is not occupied by devoted basketball fans, the Forum welcomes concertgoers – and lots of them! The venue seats over 18,000 and attracts headliners from around the world. There are dining and snacking options on every level. We can’t wait to see the Grammy Award winning duo Twenty One Pilots on June 26. ORPHEUM MEMPHIS With its long and historic past, the Orpheum is a premier destination for Downtown Memphis. The theatre is plush and upscale with 1920s-style opulence, but the vibe is warm and friendly, giving the shows an
intimate feel in spite of the space for 2,600 guests. Each year the theatre hosts a season of the hottest Broadway touring companies, screens films from the Golden Age of Hollywood, and showcases an eclectic array of musical talent. Celebrated rock legend Peter Gabriel performs on June 26.

LEVITT SHELL Located in Overton Park, this Memphis landmark is the outdoor amphitheater where Elvis Presley gave his first paid concert in 1954. Today it offers free music every Thursday – Sunday in the Spring and Fall. A huge hit with families, it is kid-friendly and pet-friendly. Bringing your own food is allowed, and is also available for purchase on site. The Levitt Shell presents two paid fundraising shows each year, and more than 50 free concerts from a variety of acts. We are excited about the Grammy winning, all-female mariachi sensation Flor de Toloache on June 28.

Today, thanks to the revitalization of Overton Square, the venue is once again a vibrant music scene, hosting everything from local favorites to bigger acts, such as Leon Russell and the Wood Brothers. You’ll find live music seven nights a week and a jazz brunch on weekends, accompanied by delicious Creole fare. Indie rock sensation Built to Spill will perform on July 9. LIVE AT THE GARDEN This open-air venue is hosted by Memphis Botanic Garden in East Memphis, justly famous for its beautiful scenery. The popular summertime and early fall concert series are fun and relaxed, as many people opt to bring their own picnics, blankets, and chairs for lawn seating. Table seating is also available. Food trucks are on site for anyone wishing to buy food at the venue. Live at the Garden features bigger acts, such as iconic rock band The Doobie Brothers on July 13. I love mixing girly outfits with an edgy piece and the Black “Docs” fit that look so well. Last but not least, spend some money on accessories. I live by this rule of thumb - you can change the look of any outfit just by updating your accessories. It’s a cheap and easy way to switch things up according to the trends. Hats are a staple in my wardrobe. You can take an outfit next level by throwing on a hat. I’m really loving the newsboy style hats right now, and I have been wrapping my wide brim hats with scarves and bandanas to coordinate with the rest of my outfit. Bandanas are also a cheap way to jazz up your rocker tees. I wear them around my neck often, and they cost pennies at any art store. Sometimes mixing patterns, and throwing on all your cool accessories will make you feel like the coolest rocker chick at any concert!

THE DAYS OF TURNING A DIAL TO FLIP THROUGH A PRE-SET STATION FOR A GOOD SONG IS LONG GONE. o more must we practice patience, waiting for the local radio stations to broadcast the top hits in the hourly playlist. Much like the instantaneous world we live in, music has evolved into a music lover’s paradise, where songs of any decade can be instantly accessed. Streaming music has become the lifeblood of the music industry. According to Lifewire.com, “streaming audio is a way of delivering sound without requiring you to download files from the internet.” As streaming has surged in popularity (now you can stream not only music, but movies, shows, and video games), the number of companies offering their musical services has also increased! main players jockeying for a coveted space on your phone’s home screen. For starters, consumers have a tough time telling most of these services apart because the plans they offer are largely the same. Some of these rival platforms focus on radio while others offer ondemand streaming, and some promote uninterrupted listening, free of ads. But at their core, all of these paid services give the listener unlimited music streaming and the ability to create playlists, their own radio stations, and an opportunity to download songs for roughly $10 bucks a month. Tune in to our list to see the break down of the top-rated platforms before ultimately deciding which one to subscribe to!
• 50 million+ songs • 50 million+ subscribers • 3 month free trial Best Suited For: If you already have a large iTunes library of downloaded music, you’ll enjoy a fairly seamless integration streaming new tunes with Apple Music. Bottom Line: The service works well with iOS and Android, and often features early releases of popular musicians’ new music. Also, if you have difficulty remembering song titles, it has a nifty tool where you can search for songs by lyrics, instead. Pricing: $10/month, $15/month (family plan), $5/month (students)
STAFF PICK • 35 million+ songs
• Partnership with Hulu
• 96 million+ subscribers
• Offers freemium model
• 30 day free trial Best Suited For: This is probably the best service for those who want to play songs on-demand. Spotify® also offers great genre and activity-based playlists, as well as easy playlist customization for those who like to create their own. Bottom Line: This is Tour Collierville’s staff pick, so obviously it’s the best! Spotify is arguably the world’s most popular music streaming service, and also the first one to partner with TV and movie streaming (Hulu is free with Spotify Premium). Pricing: $10/month, $15/month (family plan), $5/month (students)
• 2 million+ songs • 6 million+ subscribers • 3 month free trial • Offers ad-supported freemium model Best Suited For: Listeners who want to hit play and enjoy for an extended period of time, whether hosting a party, listening during a work-out session, or just simply want to put the device down for a while. Bottomline: Pandora® offers tailored recommendations, and somewhat customizable stations. Start a station based on one of your favorite artists, then be surprised by all your other favorite songs that somehow manage to come on next. usic lovers have flocked to the Square for the last 20 years for a pickin’ good time, thanks to one woman who had a dream. In 1999, Collierville local Betty Westmoreland saw a need - a desolate, yet beautiful Square that needed life strung back into it on Friday nights. Betty called a few musical friends, and approached the Mayor seeking permission to start an open invitation acoustic music jam for free on Friday evenings. Former Mayor, H.W. Cox, was on board with the idea and Betty remembers his enthusiastic response to her request being, “Baby, this Square is as much yours as it is mine!” From a modest beginning, word of the new jam location had musicians coming out of the woodwork, and within a few years, musicians from all over West Tennessee and North Mississippi came to perform with one another, impromptu, on our beloved Square. “Twenty years ago I would drive through the Square after work from teaching school and think to myself, ‘Gee, I wish we had more music around here. We have this beautiful Square, now where do I get started?’ ” remembers Betty. “And it started with just a handful of folks. Whether it’s been at the Square or at the church [CUMC], everybody who has come out 46

and picked a note deserves a proclamation! Really it’s all about the Square, and it’s about keeping the music alive!” When you bring your lawn chairs and picnic dinner on a Friday night during the warmer months, you’ll find small groups of musicians scattered along the Square grounds. Kids play yard games beneath the trees as the sun fades into a warm Southern night. Parents converse with one another while tapping their toes to the beat of the unrehearsed tunes being played. You’ll hear songs that span the bluegrass, folk and traditional string-band genres, recognizing some and learning others. “Music brings us together,” says Betty. “Having things like this [Square Jam] introduces this oldtimey music, where nothing is plugged in, to some who have never heard it before, all while preserving as much originality as we can. We just have a pickin’ good time with the neighbors and the kids and the music. The music is at the heart of it!” Rest assured, much of Betty’s heart is put into making this event happen every week. Much effort is done throughout the week by Betty before she can enjoy the Friday night music. Betty faithfully prepares and sends a weekly email

TIMING
IS
As someone who works full time in the Real Estate Industry, I am often asked, “When is the best time to sell my home?” Each person asking has a different situation, and I think most people are really asking, “When will I get the most money for my home?” While we sell homes all year, typically we see the biggest price increases, and the most demand in the spring and early summer months. The problem, for most people, is that when they sell a home, they also need to buy one, and while the spring and early summer is a great time to sell, the lack of inventory has made it a hard time to buy. We have had a prolonged period of time with a low inventory of homes on the market due to rapid appreciation, cost of new construction, and demand. However, If things play out the way they are headed now, we might have a historic convergence of events making this selling season one for the record books.
EVERY THING Over the last month, I have noticed several factors at work that are making this spring and summer one of the best times in recent years to both buy and sell a home: • The inventory of homes for sale is expected to rise this year. • Interest rates have dropped back to historic levels. Below 4% in some cases. • The cost of new construction continues to increase. • Demand locally for homes in all price ranges remains strong. Last year was a great year for sales, with one of the strongest spring selling seasons on record in our local market. Things did, however, cool down in the last quarter. Buyers were weary from the lack of inventory and rising interest rates, and sellers were waiting until spring to put their homes on the market. That said, properties are continuing to appreciate, while interest
rates are dropping. The convergence of all these factors has led to improving affordability for buyers. The lower interest rates should lift the housing market, nationally, and will also help improve the overall economic outlook, but those rates will eventually rise just as they did last year. On top of that, we are moving into a presidential election cycle next year, which historically means a little slower housing market. Statistically speaking, it is still a seller’s market, but I do believe this selling season is better for buyers than in recent years. If you are considering selling and buying a home, now may be the perfect time!

PROGRE SSIV E D IN N E R TOU R HOSTED BY: MEMPHIS AREA ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS AFFILIATE COUNCIL
Once a year, a group of realtors join together for an exciting networking event that is ‘off the record.’ Tour Collierville was given exclusive access to this low profile Progressive Dinner Tour, where more than 75 realtors hopped on a tour bus to learn a thing or two about local hot spots, while also enjoying some good Memphis cuisine. “This event is to educate the realtors on Memphis and surrounding areas, so they can provide that information to prospective clients that are looking to relocate in Memphis,” says MAAR Professional Development Director, O’Hara Keszler. “The event is put on by our Affiliate Council. MAAR is comprised of about 3,800 members and the majority of those members are Realtor® members, and a small percentage -- a little less than 200 -- are affiliate members, which are people that support realtors and their businesses. They are a very active group, with a separate board called the Affiliate Council, and their mission is to provide support to realtors through education.” MAAR President, Lee McWaters, expresses his excitement towards the current state in the real estate market saying, “We have seen very healthy appreciation levels in property values, which is a good thing, especially for sellers. We do have low inventory. We have about 3,800 listings in our six counties that we represent, and we represent pretty much the southern border of Tennessee, along with Tipton county right above us. That makes it a supply and demand issue. The demand is high, interest rates are low, and the Fed [Federal Reserve System] just reported that they’re probably going to keep them low for another year. Low interest rates, 4% give or take a half. When I got my first loan in the mid 90s, it was a 9.5% or a 10% interest rate, and that was probably average. So that means there’s affordable housing and we are all about quality, affordable housing.” Events like the Dinner Tour provide an excellent networking opportunity for realtors to discuss these current market trends and more. After enjoying appetizers from Collierville’s own, P.O. Press Public House & Provisions, the group jumped on the bus and enjoyed tastings from other restaurants including Napa Cafe, Pontotoc Lounge and Cafe, Grecian Gourmet Taverna, and the Hu Hotel rooftop! “We are advocates of Memphis, we sell Memphis, both commercial and residential and we are proud of Memphis, so it couldn’t be a better time for us [realtors],” says President McWaters. “It’s a booming economy. We’re literally spending tens of billions of dollars this year inside Memphis, building it up, and inside towns like Collierville and Germantown as well!” Learn more about the Memphis Area Association of Realtors by visiting: www.maar.org photos | NLA PROJECTS

DIY: INSTA LLIN G N E W FLOOR S PRESENTED BY 901 FLOORS
1
626 W. Poplar Ave, Collierville, TN 38017 (901) 457-7370 / 901floors.com
PRO TIP:
Before you start the installation, determine the layout of the flooring. As with all plank products, you should install the planks parallel to the longest exterior wall.
2
MATERIALS • SHAW LVT (LUXURY VINYL TILE) FLOORING • QUARTER ROUND • T-MOLD • THRESHOLDS • RUBBER MALLET • TAPPING BLOCK • CROWBAR • TABLE SAW • UTILITY KNIFE/RAZOR KNIFE *Depending on the existing flooring, not all tools will be needed.
STEP 1: LAYING THE FIRST PLANK Installation of the product must start from the left side of the room, working to the right when working in front of the planks or facing the starting wall. Install the second plank in the row by aligning and dropping the end tongue over the end groove of the first plank. Apply light pressure to join the two planks together. If needed, use a rubber mallet to fully engage the short side of the plank by lightly tapping the plank to engage and sit flush with the adjacent plank. Maintain an expansion gap of approximately 1/4” from the wall. Repeat this process to complete the first row. 52

STEP 2: INSTALLING THE SECOND ROW Start the second row by cutting a plank to the desired length. Keep in mind that the plank must not be shorter than 6 (15 cm) to achieve the best appearance. Install the first plank in the second row by inserting the long side tongue into the groove of the plank in the first row. This is best done with a low angle of the plank. Maintain light pressure into the side seam as you rotate the plank to the subfloor. Repeat the process with additional planks to complete each row. Very little force is required to seat the tongue into the groove. .
STEP 3: BE MINDFUL OF GAPPING
PRO TIP: When fitting around obstacles or into irregular spaces, planks can be cut easily and cleaned using a utility knife with a sharp blade. It is often beneficial to make a cardboard template of the area and transfer this pattern to the plank.
Continue installing planks and make sure to achieve a random appearance with end pieces of minimum 6 (15 cm). Check that all planks are fully engaged; If a slight gapping is found, the gap can be tapped together by using a tapping block in order to avoid damages on the planks. *Materials provided by 901 FLOORS
Protect all exposed edges of the flooring by installing quarter round. Make sure no plank will be secured in any way to the subfloor.

SPRING HOM E BE AU T IFU L AWA R D PRESENTED BY COLLIERVILLE TOWN BEAUTIFUL COMMISSION
There are so many beautiful homes and gardens across Collierville,” remarks the Fredricksons. “As we look back on how our personal property has evolved over the past 25 years, we have many memories of our children & grandchildren playing games, hunting Easter eggs & floating paper boats in the creek. We feel like our landscaped yard has come together to create a harmony and balance that we will enjoy for a very long time. The Collierville Town Beautiful Commission has chosen a special home to honor for each spring, summer, and fall season since 2016. While each season has its own particular characteristics that make a home and yard stand out, it is a particularly challenging job here in Collierville, as there are so many beautiful homes and yards! Many of our homeowners take great pride in not only upkeep and maintenance, but in creating a showcase to make their community proud. The Commission members are on the lookout year round for the perfect home that embodies the spirit of the season in a very pleasing, eye-catching way. This year’s Spring Home Beautiful award goes to Steven and Linda Fredrickson on West White Rd., who moved into their Collierville home 25 years ago.
“This particular winner for Spring 2019 was an obvious choice,” says Cindy Kessler, Chairperson for the Commission. The entire front lawn is fescue, meaning that it is gloriously green when most yards are still winter brown. The homeowners have created beautiful beds and handled drainage issues with an inventive dry creek bed—all lined with field stone and trimmed in mondo grass. Mr. Frederickson explained that they had done all the work themselves, which should maybe earn them EXTRA points! A special congratulations to the Fredicksons for doing their part to keep Collierville beautiful! Submit your home (or a neighbor’s) for the Summer Home Beautiful Award by visiting the Collierville In Bloom Facebook page! photos | CINDY KESSLER
