Letter from the Editor

“L E T Y O U R

S O U L S H I N E” Time flies and Collierville Christmas is just around the corner. We say it every year, and I’ll say it again: Christmas in Collierville is a unique experience. The town transforms into the pictureperfect Christmas card through decorations, parades, home tours, church services, and of course, the preeminent Christmas tree lighting ceremony. We couldn’t be more excited to start celebrating, and we’ve packed a lot in this issue to help you get excited for the season of giving. There’s one thing my dad (also our publisher), Keith, said to us when we were getting ready for this year’s cover shoot that struck a chord with our team: “Everyone can give, but no one gives like a child. When they want to give you something, they truly want you to have it and it means everything to them. It’s a way they let their soul shine.” It made me think of a time my younger sister (very young at the time) made me a hand drawn card, not for any specific life event, but just because she wanted me to have it. Giving me the card meant everything to Alex because she put her time, heart, and soul into making it for me. Therefore it also meant everything to me. One of my grandfather’s favorite songs was Soulshine by the Allman Brothers Band. One of the ways he let his “soulshine” was through his paintings (the truck painting featured above was his original). I’ve spent a lot of time this year listening to that song, and thinking about its lyrics. Around the time of our Christmas cover shoot, I couldn’t help but think: If everyone could “let your soulshine” in the unabashed way a child does, wouldn’t the world be a better place? To kick this

Painting by David Essary

off, we’ve combined the inspiration of his painting with the spirit of Collierville children for this year’s Christmas cover. If we all let our soul shine like children, it would have the potential to change the way we give. Perhaps we’d give more often, instead of just during certain times of the year. We might even give more of our time, in addition to material things. And just maybe, we’d give others in the community some heart and soul who wouldn’t otherwise receive it. In fact, our team realized that a lot of Collierville residents did let their “soulshine” throughout the year, by coming together to help out another resident, or the community in general. We put together a few “soulshine” stories for this issue and hope that as you read them, it will encourage you and others to keep the Christmas spirit going throughout the year, and to unabashedly and undeniably “let your soulshine” it might just be better than sunshine after all.

On the Cover: We’d like to thank the Collierville children and their parents who participated in our cover shoot. Y’all made it one of a kind! And thanks to Art and Speed for the red ride!

My name is Karen Lombardo. I am the General Manager at Roadshow BMW and Roadshow MINI. You might have read about us in the July/August and September/October issues of Tour Collierville. I’m excited to have another opportunity to tell you a bit about our dealership. As we approach the most wonderful time of the year, we are feeling grateful for the opportunities we have had to help so many people who need it in the Greater Memphis area in 2019. In January 2019, we launched our Roadshow Gives Back program. We are supporting a different local charitable organization or nonprofit each month in 2019 and have confirmed that the program will continue in 2020. So far this year we have worked with the listed organizations, all of which have received a $6,000 donation from us. We have exciting partnerships planned in November and December! In

16

November, we will partner with the MidSouth Food Bank, and in December, the Memphis Crisis Center. We are so proud of how well our business has integrated with these fantastic organizations and their goals. You can read more information about the program at: roadshowbmw.com/roadshow-gives-back

I know many of you will be shopping for a new vehicle for the holidays, so I hope you’ll consider Roadshow BMW and Roadshow MINI. I assure you that when you do business with Roadshow, your business matters. Roadshow BMW and Roadshow MINI are located at the corner of Germantown Parkway and Walnut Grove Road. Feel at home with your haircut A new salon on the Square is now open for business, ready to have you looking your best for the holiday season! The Club’s staff - and owners Normann and Tresa - can’t wait to see you there, so make sure to stop by soon! Let ‘The Club’ take care of your next haircut! It’s the perfect place to come relax, grab a craft beer (or coffee) and catch up on local news, all while getting your hair cut. Featuring a modern color-palette, The Club has large hair cutting stations with vintage tool boxes, brightly lit with large mirrors and fun music piped into the salon. You may recognize one of the owners, Normann Lacaden, from around town, as he both lives and works in Collierville. Before opening The Club, Normann performed much of the electrical work on the Collierville Town Square’s buildings, so he’s a familiar face on the Square. Normann and his co-owner and wife, Tresa, first met in a hair salon, so

it only makes sense that they would dream of opening their salon right on the Collierville Square. Tresa was cutting hair at a barber shop, Normann came in to get his haircut, and the rest is history! After three years, Normann proposed to Tresa on the Square, taking a knee on the historic caboose that sits in the heart of Collierville. Normann attended cosmetology school at Tresa’s suggestion, hoping that one day they’d be able to work together. Between the couple, they have over 30 years of experience. Now they have their own salon, The Club: Shears and Beers, which opened earlier this year to rave reviews from the Collierville community. Norman and Tresa are thrilled with the positive response!

Everyone who walks through The Club’s doors will feel immediately at home. Normann and Tresa insist on getting to know their customers personally, carrying on a tradition of kindness and trust for which Collierville and its historic Square are already known. The Club is now one of many merchants who call the Collierville Square home and help to create that welcoming, supportive community!

Dear Abby, Hi, I’m Abby. In my early life the world wasn’t very kind to me, so I suppose the best place to start is when I was living around an apartment complex in Collierville trying to survive on small rodents and scavenging food from the trash. To escape the heat, I would sleep under cars or a dumpster. I was constantly terrified that I would be hit by a car. This was all I knew. Then one day I saw two humans roaming around looking for something. I saw them spot me under the bushes where I was hiding. They called to me but I was too afraid to approach them. They left some food and water, so when the coast was clear I crawled over to eat it. Shoot! I was caught in their trap! I was so afraid. Early the next morning when they returned, I heard them say how thin, dirty, weak I was and that I wobbled like I was injured, but fortunately I wasn’t doing something called “bleeding.” Because my condition was so poor, they thought I was an older cat that had been dumped or left behind by a resident, so they rushed me to a vet. I surprised them when

the vet shared that I was only a year old! They cleaned me up, spayed me, and gave me the food, medicine and care I needed to regain my beauty and strength. Fast forward to me now, living at CAS. I was so scared the day I was trapped, but it was the best thing that ever happened to me. The staff and volunteers here always talk about how I turned out to be such a playful, gentle, goofy and affectionate girl. I have to agree! I’m so grateful to have been rescued by them, but now that I’m healthy, I can’t wait to find my forever family. Are you looking for a startlingly pretty cat with beautiful green eyes, fluffy white fur and a show stopping black tail? A cat to chase those little stuffed mice around your house and cozy with you when you come home from work? That’s me! Please hurry on in, meet me and gaze into my beautiful green eyes in person. And do me a favor, if you ever see an animal roaming or in distress, please don’t drive by and hope for the best. Call the shelter and hopefully they can save another life like they saved mine.

THE

CITIZENS

OF

TOMORROW Are you raising your children today to be good citizens of tomorrow? We, as parents, always worry about our children, wanting them to grow into happy, successful, and caring adults. We make sure they eat the right foods and have the best educational opportunities, but sometimes we forget that we’re their first teacher and role model. Are we consciously raising our children to become good citizens as adults? The best way to do this is to make sure we’re focusing on core values every day: good manners, helping others and giving back to our communities. Here are some ways that your whole family can participate in giving back. When your little ones see you as their role model, working to help those in need, they will be more inclined to understand the importance of giving back. As parents, we work all day, and the work continues when we come home to do household chores, prepare dinner and help with homework. When our children see that we take the time to give back a little, despite our busy schedules, they will see giving back as something good rather than a chore. Talk with your children about how lucky they are to have toys and not having to worry about food, clothing and shelter. Discuss different reasons why people become less fortunate and why it’s important to help them. Consider the following ideas for giving back, helping your children become good citizens in the process:

1. 2.

Volunteer at a soup kitchen, local park or community fundraiser.

3.

Plant a tree in your local neighborhood to give back to the earth.

4. 5.

Clean up garbage found in your neighborhood and parks.

6.

Donate toys so less fortunate children have something to open during the holidays. Better yet, go through toys every year with your children and identify which toys they would like to donate to those without. Drop the gently used toys off at Goodwill, Salvation Army or the charity of your choice before the holidays (when your children receive new toys).

7.

Write letters to men and women overseas, especially to those without families back home. Or sponsor an orphan. Children of all ages can help write letters, pick out gifts and draw photos to share with others.

8.

22

Help elderly neighbors do things, such as carrying their groceries, walking their dog or offering them your company.

Collect winter clothing for those forced to live without shelter instead of raising funds for them.

Spend time at a local animal shelter to give back to the pets without a home.

Whether you call it benchmarking or “stealing shamelessly,” it is a practice of an organization to compare key components of their operation to another similar organization. For example, Henry Ford studied slaughterhouses to help him develop an efficient assembly line, and Steve Jobs copied the builders of his childhood home to inspire simple design. Organizations, including The Town of Collierville, must be open to accepting new and different ideas and be willing to implement what they have learned to improve their own product and performance. The Town’s Economic Development office uses benchmarking not to compare demographics and growth metrics but to analyze and understand how similar power suburbs manage growth, attract development, and elevate their status as a premier community. Here are a few of the suburban markets we track and benchmark:

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA: As a child, my family lived in “the Valley of the Sun,” Scottsdale, Arizona, from 1963 to the early ‘70’s. In 1960, Scottsdale had a population of 10,000. By the time we departed for Detroit, Michigan in the early 1970’s, Scottsdale’s population was almost 70,000. Today, believe it or not, Scottsdale has over 200,000 citizens. In spite of this tremendous growth, Scottsdale is still a desirable location not only to live, but to visit. It is a clean, organized, and well-managed suburb of Phoenix. One of the aspects of Scottsdale that impresses and interests me has 24

been their ability to maintain the small town feel, especially in and around Old Town Scottsdale. In Old Town Scottsdale (OTS), they have weekly art walks with businesses and galleries displaying local works. Collierville has a relatively new event, Arts in the Alley, which is similar in many ways, bringing local artists and residents to the Town Square for a unique experience. Additionally, OTS organizes trolley rides in and around the district, where the dynamic history of the area is shared. Scottsdale successfully blends tradition with innovation.

OVERLAND PARK, KANSAS: My wife, Melanie, is from the Kansas City, Kansas area, so I have spent quite a bit of time in Overland Park. Overland Park (OP) has doubled in size since 1980, from 82,000 to over 175,000 today. Sprint, YRC Worldwide, Ferrellgas, and Black & Veatch claim OP as their corporate home. The demographics of the area are very similar to those here in Collierville. One of the best things about OP is their convention center. The Overland Park Convention Center (OPCC) sits on 26 acres of prime real estate and hosts over 300 events annually. The OPCC has a ballroom, trade show space, and also provides a variety of theater, classroom, and banquet access as well. Convention centers are good for the local economy, with hotels, restaurants, and other related services benefiting greatly. Memphis lacks adequate convention space. As we grow our corporate footprint, in an area that is easily accessible and playing

on our status as a “regional hub,” I envision that Collierville will have its own “CCC” someday, or possibly a boutique convention space. It would certainly be good for our economy.

830 West Poplar, Suite 1, Collierville, TN 901.853.1568 • www.burrissdds.com

CARMEL, INDIANA: From 38,000 in 2000 to close to 80,000 today, Carmel is the premier suburb of Indianapolis and Indiana in general. Home to Geico and Liberty Mutual, Carmel boosts one of the nicest community parks in America, with the $55,000,000 Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation Center offering a water park, lazy river, climbing walls, fitness center, and concert venue. With this tremendous growth came many challenges, especially related to traffic flow. However, creative problem solving led to the formation of a series of 125 “roundabouts,” and Carmel is now affectionately known as the “Roundabout Capital of the US.” This creative solution solved the problem, as citizens are now firm believers in this traffic congestion antidote.

CHESTERFIELD, MISSOURI: I spent 8th grade through my sophomore year at Southern Methodist University in the St. Louis area. I lived in the town of Ballwin, which borders Chesterfield. Chesterfield, a power suburb that sits approximately 25 miles from downtown St. Louis, is similar to Collierville. You can draw parallels between the two as it relates to land use, distance from the urban core, school system, affluence, infrastructure, corporate presence, and growth. Just as we have a handful of corporate headquarters with 200-300 employees, Chesterfield has a similar amount in the 400-500 range. Both St. Louis and Memphis have been challenged with out-migration, with many citizens landing in Chesterfield and Collierville. One of the things that I think St. Louis and Chesterfield has done well is work together. There are a variety of economic development agencies in the St. Louis area that have embraced Chesterfield, looking for ways to collaborate. Similarly, Collierville continues to strengthen relationships with the Memphis Chamber of Commerce, EDGE, and both city and county governments. We have recently been asked to participate in a revitalized regional economic development initiative called the Regional Economic Alliance, or REA. Taking a cue from STL and Chesterfield, we are all in this economic pursuit together! When it comes to corporate expansion and relocation success, sometimes what you glean from others just might be the difference maker. Copy that!

SERVICE

LIFELONG For Isabella (Bella) Snow, class of 2020 at Hutchison School, service to the Memphis community doesn’t take a break. In fact, when she heard that a service project in a local elementary school had been discontinued, she saw the value it would have for the young girls at the school and decided to jump-start the project again. Over the past two years, Bella has led the “Girls in Pearls” service project, teaching etiquette and life skills to fourth grade girls. She started by collaborating with school administrators to find out their needs and target areas of focus. She eagerly planned out the project and strategically improved it by incorporating more interactive activities, including interviewing skills, dressing for success,

social media etiquette, table manners, bullying prevention, health, fitness, and philanthropy. She also arranged excursions to restaurants to give the girls opportunities to apply what they had learned. “I have grown so much through my service leadership projects,” Bella said. “Teaching the girls has been a wonderful experience, but it’s also helped me develop academically and personally. Many of the relationships have been truly symbiotic.” Through Hutchison Serves, a program housed under Hutchison’s comprehensive co-curricular leadership department, Hutchison girls have the opportunity to serve the community while establishing and maintaining meaningful connections with individuals and organizations

throughout the calendar year. Hutchison Serves was created by a generous gift from alumna Kirby Dobbs Floyd (class of 1982) and her husband Glenn Floyd. The goal of Serves is to facilitate servicelearning activities for all Hutchison girls – from early childhood (starting at age 2) through senior year in upper school. Bella was the 2019 recipient of the Kirby Dobbs and Glenn Floyd Excellence in Service Scholarship Award. The Hutchison Serves program cultivates the service learning model by combining community service with learning objectives, preparation, and reflection. Structural components include meaningful service through community engagement and sustainable relationships. Overall, the goal of service learning is to

connect communities from various backgrounds through common experiences. In addition to volunteering for service hours, Hutchison girls can partner with various community organizations to create sustainable service projects through the Wilson Society, established by the Kemmons Wilson Family Foundation. The Wilson Society encourages the girls to create individual service projects based on issues they are passionate about in the Memphis community. As the 20192020 Wilson Society co-president, Bella took on the “Girls in Pearls” project in addition to an established Wilson Society project she was working on. In addition to maintaining sustainable projects throughout the entire school year, Bella encourages her peers to venture out and explore service opportunities during academic breaks, such as fall break. “Not having schedule restrictions provides endless possibilities to engage in meaningful service over during breaks,” she said. She added that while continuous and sustainable service projects are the overarching goal, breaks are an ideal time to think beyond yourself and engage in service for others. “Choosing servant leadership as an alternative to taking time off or vacationing often ignites a passion for service and discovering the importance of giving beyond yourself.” Bella Snow truly has a heart for service and desires to make a positive impact on her community.

International Thanksgiving n

early 400 years after a displaced Pawtuxet Native American and the Mayflower pilgrims shared a peaceful meal as strangers, we continue to celebrate such cultural exchange and break bread with one another right here in Collierville. Although Thanksgiving today doesn’t look quite the same in every household, we can embrace the sentiment of sharing good conversation and a meal surrounded by friends and family, no matter what part of the world you are from! Enjoy the international traditions described below by a few Colliervillians willing to share the dishes on their holiday tables!

Nourishing

Haiti I

t’s been a little over a year since we last sat down with Collierville native, Ellen Humerickhouse, who at the time began construction on an educational outreach program for Haitian children with special needs. As the founder of La Limye Ministry, a Christ-centered children’s home, Ellen’s plate has been full serving both her eleven orphaned girls, two of which have special needs, in addition to assisting the people of her Haitian village by building a special needs school on the same property as her fully secured children’s home. The school was a necessary build because many Haitians believe children with disabilities are cursed, and therefore cast out of society, hidden away in their houses with little to no interaction with others. While Ellen didn’t know the number of students that would eventually attend the school, she acted on faith and La Limye [translated, “The Light”] Learning Center opened its doors to 24 special needs students in June.

Although Ellen only knew one child with special needs before opening the school, she knew there was a need for this type of facility. “I’ve been working in my village for six years now and I’ve only known of one child with special needs along my road,” says Ellen, “but I just knew there was a need for my two girls [Noviette and Ketchina] and others nearby.” Along the two-mile stretch of dirt road that runs through the village, ten children sat alone, famished, believing they were unwanted, until news spread by word-of-mouth that the facility was opening. Those ten children, along with twelve additional children nearby, learned that at La Limye they would receive nourishment in every sense of the word. “I’ve learned that there’s not much I can say to the parents to change their mind [about the children being cursed],” remarks Ellen. “I have to talk to the child and keep telling them every single day how beautiful they are, and how they’re a child of God; how they’re worth more than rubies and eventually they will hear that enough and will believe it! Some of them are starting to get really attached to me and the teachers because they feel love, some for the first time, and because they know that when they’re in our care, they get a plate full of food. It’s going to be a really good ministry because in just these first few weeks we’re already noticing the kids are starting to feel safe and are learning!” Similar to the experience of Collierville students, a small yellow bus travels the village road to pick up all the students from their homes before returning back to La Limye. After the initial months of assessing each child, the school officially began coursework in September. The classes are broken down into three groups: preacademic, academic, and post-academic. Students from toddlers to adolescents with disabilities such as hearing impaired, no verbal skills, etc., and who are not prepared for academic learning, are in the pre-academic class. Over time in this class, educational skills such as letters, numbers, and basic foundational training will occur. The primary focus for these students is therapy, interactive songs, sensory work, feeding, and simply showing them love. The academic class is for teenagers and young adults that have ADHD, down syndrome, limited vocabulary, etc. Students in this class are learning academic foundational training. The post-academic class is a mixture of young adults and adults with conditions such as hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, autism, and down syndrome. These students are learning life skills such as washing clothes, cooking food, and counting money to make purchases, making day-to-day life easier. The student’s ages range from three to thirty-five years old! “At the end of the day, we want to nourish them with food because sometimes the only way to show someone Jesus is by giving

them food,” says Ellen. “If they have an empty stomach and they’re starving, they can’t think or focus on anything else and it affects things like their behavior. So when the kids come in the morning, they eat and then they have school. We also want to feed them the word of God and make sure that is poured into their lives! We want to feed them with good words, to feel our love, that they are worthy of encouragement. Whether it’s love with Gospel or love through food. Just love. My hope and desire for this school would be to change the mindset of our village about children with special needs. I really hope that by us pouring love and care into these children, that will show their caregivers and everyone that they aren’t cursed by the devil or an evil spirit, and they are not mistakes. My hope and dream is that our little village’s mindset will see the worth in these kids, accept and treat these kids just like they do any other children. We’ve got to help them. Now that I’ve seen children starved to death, and seen unexplainable poverty, because I’ve seen that - I cannot turn a blind eye.” story | ANNA BELL photos | ELLEN HUMERICKHOUSE n o vemb er / d ec emb er 20 1 9

Collierville CHRISTMAS

I love Christmas in Collierville. As a community we will soon gather at the Town Square waiting for the lighting of the Christmas tree, the arrival of Santa and for the Square to take on an aspect of enchantment. Then at St. Patrick, where I pastor, we will invite the whole Town to come on our property for a huge party of food trucks, and offer parking for the Town Christmas Parade. Our sanctuary will also signal something different — something extravagant, the beginning of Advent! The

“Like Jesus, take in the broken, the weak, the sick, and the sore and remind them by our own love and care that all is not dark, there is hope!” - Rev. James M. Holland celebration of God taking on flesh and blood and entering time and space. Our whole building will be festooned and gilded — festive. What is this? Why the lights, candles, and special genre of music? For about a month Christians and non-Christians alike will go to parties, burn the Yule Log, drink rivers of eggnog and give gifts to one another. For some, it will be a distraction from the mundane drudgery of everyday life — a welcome relief. For others, it will be a time to remember.

For most of us, it will be a time of giving. Why? Because at the center of this season is the ultimate act of giving. The infinite became finite, the large became small, the strong became weak, the powerful became vulnerable — God took on flesh and blood! What does this say to us who remember? To us who ponder the ultimate act of self-giving? The real answer is to say, “Wake up!” To us in the comforts of suburbia, it is to remember Jesus came not to the rich but to the poor. Jesus used his power not to make himself great, but to make others great. Jesus’ ministry was one of inviting in the sick, lame and broken. Jesus’ life and death was about reconciliation, not alienation. So, what does this season mean for us in Collierville? The same thing it meant for Scrooge: that real life and human thriving is life laid down — self giving. It means that our gifts, resources, money and time are used to bring restoration and life to those who wonder why they do not have a seat at our tables. This month of celebration is to knock us in the head and tell us to “get busy” being people who, like Jesus, take in the broken, the weak, the sick, and the sore and remind them by our own love and care that all is not dark, there is hope!

Christmas COVE D

riving around in the family car through neighborhoods of brightly lit Christmas lights might as well have been a holiday tradition in our family. My younger sister and I would have our faces smashed against the chilled glass trying to take in the scenery. “Look at THAT house!” she would scream, “No look at THIS house!” I would yell back. My Mom would turn up the Christmas music on the radio while Dad drove a little slower than normal. We were making memories driving through those subdivisions, whether we knew that at the time or not.

Fast forward from the simple holiday lights of yesterday that have now transformed into yard displays that are OFF THE CHARTS! One particular cove in Collierville, known to many as the ‘Holiday Cove,’ has become a drive-by staple. While all the homes in the cul-de-sac get into the festive spirit, two particular homes go all out to make sure Santa doesn’t fly by on Christmas Eve! John Thompson and David Brown put their decoration talents to the test every year in a friendly competition to see who can really ‘DECK THE HALLS’.

Thompson gets excited every year to get his hands dirty in the creative process before decorating the front yard. “We (John & David) talk about what we are going to do, but we don’t necessarily work on it together,” says Thompson. “We both buy things, but in the scheme of it all, he buys more and I build more.” In Thompson’s yard you can find everything from inflatables, to a countdown to Christmas sign! The wooden, handmade Christmas cabin is one for the books, giving drivers a real look inside Santa’s workshop! Collierville’s best kept secret didn’t stay a secret for long! Every year, the yard displays have gotten bigger and brighter. Thompson has

ommunity is a powerful word. The power behind community becomes limitless when people come together, united for a cause. For me, ‘community’ can be defined by the values that we live by. For example, seeing someone across the street smile and wave with genuine affection, giving you the sense that they’re family with no biological relation. Showing neighborly love is community. It is gathering together not only in times of celebration and despair, but in support of each other. Knowing that someone is there for you in a moment of need, whether to lend a helping hand or just to remind you of the greatness you possess, is community. For most of us, community is instilled at a very young age. You recognize one person or another because you went to school together, attended church together, or played at the park together. Some parents may have been your little league coaches, while others cheered you on from the varsity team sidelines. The connections we share with one another and, with open arms, give to those new to Town, are what reinforce the fact that Collierville truly cares.

Collierville is a very giving city and together we can make a pretty big difference. -Tim Netherton Collierville embodies this sense of community particularly when we learn of someone in need. We use our diversity to our advantage, gathering people of all ages and backgrounds, who are skilled in a multitude of areas – whether that be elders mentoring our youth, young people inspiring the old, the strong aiding the weak – and giving ourselves fully to the other. We all have something to contribute to the betterment of our Town. It’s amazing how we have interior decorators working next door to realtors working next door to culinary experts, all encouraging and supporting one another right here on the Square. Only together, as a community, can we give and ultimately impact others beyond our individual means. Participation is essential, and the world could take a lesson from the way Collierville personifies community. It’s that time of the year where we remind ourselves to give and serve one another, because truth be told, we’re all blessed in one way or another. Interestingly enough, the more I get involved in various aspects around Town, the more I realize the ‘holiday giving spirit’ continues well past when trees are stored in attics and the holiday lights are removed from the rooftops. Usually we hear about communities coming together when they stem from a cause or disaster. How do I know this? Because if they didn’t come together, nothing would happen. This is what can happen when a small Town comes together. n o vemb er / d ec emb er 20 1 9

Collierville

Cares

I

n March of this year Collierville Cares Facebook admin, Tim Netherton, set out to aid the Collierville Police Department with an expenditure that just never quite made the cut on the station’s fiscal budget. Netherton learned of the need for a piece of equipment called ‘Total Station’ that calculates measurements reenacting a crime scene, not long after a fatal car accident occurred earlier this year. In the past, the city would borrow this equipment from Germantown when needed, but this time saving aid was something Netherton and several community leaders, including Police Chief David Tillner, felt would benefit Collierville to purchase. Without a shadow of a doubt, Netherton knew he could turn to the Collierville community for their support in raising the

46

funds for this important $13,000 piece of equipment, software and company training. Over the course of two months he partnered with the Collierville Cares team, creating a Facebook fundraiser for individuals to contribute whatever dollar amount they could to the cause, knocking on the doors of Collierville based businesses and organizations to donate and received AMAZING feedback. “We raised close to three thousand dollars from the Facebook group of people all over Collierville donating $10, $20, whatever they could. We raised seven thousand dollars from businesses in Town that I contacted. When I told them [businesses] that this is for the Police Department, there wasn’t anyone unwilling to help!” says Netherton. Then a godsend came knocking on his door in the form of the Memphis Shelby County Law Enforcement Foundation, willing to contribute three thousand dollars to the cause, rounding out the $13,000 dollars needed for the equipment! “Chief Tillner has demonstrated sound leadership time and time again and

when he explained the impact the Total Station technology would have on bringing efficiencies to his operations and pinpoint accuracy to his ability to gather evidence for future investigations, I found our partnership to be a perfect fit,” remarks Maurice Denbow, MSCLE Foundation Executive Director. “It was a distinct honor being able to play a part in closing out a worthwhile project. More impressive than the equipment however, is the way the community came together, generated discussions, interest and a rapid growth of support for their hometown police force. The outpouring and subsequent funding is a direct reflection of a mutual respect and true sense of community. Collierville Cares, Collierville Citizens Police Association, and especially the efforts of Tim Netherton are to be applauded. Without them, this equipment would still be just another thought lingering through a tight budget process.” Netherton remarked time and again how it was the people of Collierville who made this project possible: “I was truly humbled by the community support in all the projects we’ve done. It doesn’t matter the color of your skin, political party or if your kids are in public or private school. Everybody in Collierville cares about their local community. Because the truth is, none of the six of us [the Collierville Cares group] can do very much, but what we have found is that Collierville is a very giving city and together we can make a pretty big difference.” photos | TIM NETHERTON & POLICE CHIEF DAVID TILLNER

Compassion for

O

ne Collierville High School senior learned of his father’s terminal cancer diagnosis only days before his death and the loving arms of the Collierville community found their way around Llandon King. Initially King reached out to the community via Facebook and a GoFundMe account. The community responded immediately, starting with one of Collierville’s own, Selena Silvestro. “ ‘A hardworking Collierville teenager is working two jobs to help his sick father’ - those words really resonated with people,” remarked Silvestro. “It helped rally community support! If there’s one thing I’ve learned about this Town, Collierville residents always come through when there’s someone struggling! Awesome friends like Lisa McNutt immediately jumped in to help. Jason Smith from Titan Drywall & Construction paid for their past due MLGW and Town of Collierville water bills, too! Brooke Scoggins from Collierville Cares suggested we offer to throw Llandon a graduation party!” King was touched by the community’s efforts to show him support in his time of utmost despair. “The community coming together to help my family has profoundly affected me,” said King. “It has given me an emotional boost knowing there are great people out there willing to help. When people show up to help a total stranger - it’s an incredible thing! I think the greatest thing

shown through this situation is a sense of togetherness here in this great Town of Collierville. Sadly, this seems to be lacking in numerous areas of the world. It’s a major reason why the world is a cold, harsh reality for so many. This Town exemplifies togetherness! When people come together for a common goal, it keeps us unified against all odds - no matter how big. This is something you rarely find anywhere in this day and age. My recent experience has shown me this truth: Be kind to one another and look out for your fellow man - you never know what kind of story a person is living!” photos | CINDY B. A

Collierville resident felt compelled to share her story with others on how the community has made her transplant to Town overwhelmingly heartwarming. Tracy Delghingaro moved with her family from Illinois to Collierville eight years ago in 2011 when her husband was transferred with his job. Since becoming a resident, Delghingaro explained to Facebook group, Shop Collierville, how Collierville has proven time and again to be a wonderful place to live and how the sense of community is real here. “Ever since we’ve been here,” says Delghingaro. “We’ve experienced so many little kind things that have accumulated into making our life in Collierville so absolutely wonderful!” The reaction to Delghingaro’s words was one of gratitude and pride, inspiring 154 people to comment on the post. Comments ranged from, “I’ve been here for 22 years and can’t imagine living anywhere else,” “Proud residents since 1987,” and “It’s neighbors like you who really make this town amazing.” There are many ways to get involved in community efforts here in Collierville. REALTOR TIPS HOLIDAY HOMEBUYING

Should you sell your home this holiday season? The holidays have arrived and with them, the time of year when home sellers wonder whether they should keep their properties on the market or take them off instead. If owners haven’t listed their home yet, they may be asking themselves: should I wait until spring or brave the winter real estate market? Trying to sell your home during the holidays can be daunting. The season is extremely busy for families, and taking on the additional stress of selling a house could be a turnoff for some people. Many people consider the holiday season the worst time to sell your home because homeowners are busy hosting family members, putting up their favorite decorations and planning vacations. However, listing a home during the holidays can be extremely advantageous to homeowners, and it doesn’t have to ruin any holiday cheer.

Here are a few reasons why homeowners should consider listing their homes this winter:

LESS INVENTORY. For many homeowners, selling their home during the holidays seems like too much of a hassle. They will either take their home off the market or wait until the warmer months to list. This creates an inventory shortage, which is good news for a seller. A shortage means limited choices for buyers, so the homeowner could have a higher asking price. CONTROL YOUR SHOWINGS. Homeowners do not need to let their homes be constantly available for showing. Let your real estate agent know if there are certain days and times that won’t work for your schedule. You can have blackout dates where there are absolutely no showings, or create a daily schedule

STAGING. Staging your home can be as easy as decorating for the holidays. Just be careful not to overdo it, as décor that is too over the top can distract buyers. Sellers can avoid offending potential buyers by using general fall and winter decorations. It is also a good idea to have pictures available showing your home without holiday décor.

for homes during the holidays often have a reason for doing so, meaning they are more motivated buyers. Other buyers will put off a home search during the holidays and pick things up again in the spring. If someone is touring homes instead of celebrating the season with friends and family, they likely need to buy a home quickly and could be willing to pay more. Of course, the most important thing that you can do to give yourself an advantage is to hire a Realtor®, a member of the National Association of Realtors®. Realtors® have real insights, unparalleled knowledge of your local market and can help you sell your home this winter, so that you and your family can get back to celebrating the holidays.
