OUR TOWN, OUR TEAMS

W

elcome to fall! This is my favorite season of the year for so many reasons. Among them are the cooler weather, the beautiful autumnal leaves falling around the Collierville Town Square and of course, football. For me, despite the fact that much of our football season is actually played during scorching temperatures, football always invokes the image of sweatshirts, jeans and frosty breath. This issue is dedicated to the boys (and girls) of fall — the football players, cheerleaders and band members. You will find the schedules and team photos of the four high schools local to Collierville: Collierville High School,

“I got my city right behind me, if I fall, they got me…” -“Can’t Hold Us,” Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Briarcrest Christian School, Houston High School and St. George’s Independent School. Here, you’ll be able to meet not only the band, football and cheer teams, but also their coaches, sponsors and directors — so you’ll know exactly who to cheer for this Friday night! As our cover states, these are “Our Town, Our Teams.” This title was inspired by a somewhat unlikely source — the Macklemore & Ryan Lewis song, “Can’t Hold Us.” They rap, “I got my city right behind me, if I fall, they got me…” and if we know one thing, it’s that Collierville will always be uplifting all these teams and schools to their greatest potential. Beyond football, this issue includes tips on planning an upcoming family vacation, how best to enjoy your home during the fall and information about the much-

awaited Whataburger®. (Spoiler alert, if you haven’t already heard: we’re getting one!) There’s also a beautiful renovated kitchen and bathroom that will provide great inspiration, if you’re looking to make a change in your home. We hope you have a great fall here in Collierville! Time seems to move quicker and quicker these days — next time we see you, it’ll be the holidays!

On the Cover Special thanks to these four awesome football captains for appearing on our cover! L-R: Christian Crew (HHS), Wesley Davis (BCS), Brayden Hendricks (CHS) and Luke Washington (SGIS)

Bernie Fechter, a long-time Memphian, moved to Collierville with his family five years ago. His kids attend local schools and play sports on Collierville club teams. “My family loves Collierville. We like the events that give it a small-town feeling, from the Christmas parade to events in the town square. We enjoy the tight-knit community feeling,” he said. Fechter has spent the past 17 years in the commercial construction business. “After completing a multimilliondollar project renovating the Cook Convention Center, I was burned out from the industry. I decided to start looking for a new career path,” he explained. He consulted franchise groups and explored several different avenues before setting his sights on CarePatrol. CarePatrol is the nation’s largest senior placement franchise in the United States, with over 150 locations in 44 states. It is a free senior housing placement service, helping families find independent living, assisted living, memory

care and in-home care options. All you need to do is make one very important but simple phone call. CarePatrol knows that choosing a safe, senior housing option cannot be made by appearance alone. That’s why the phone call is so important. Their advisors assess each senior housing option through a “Care Discovery,” which includes tours of the facilities and reviewing the state records of each community housing option. Their recommendations for care options are based on you and your senior’s individual needs and preferences. “This is a company that provides a free service to families that are in a time of need. “This is a company that provides a free service to families that are in a time of need. It’s a great service and that’s why I’m proud to be its newest franchise location.” -Bernie Fechter had a high-ranking for owner satisfaction year-in and yearout. CarePatrol felt different to me — they were there to help,” Fechter explained. In September 2021, CarePatrol of Memphis will have its grand opening! It serves all of Memphis, plus areas within an hour radius. “It’s a great service and that’s why I’m proud to be its newest franchise location,” said Fechter. Wake Up Happy Main and Mulberry: Her Town is a series that features women in business and leadership positions across the Mid-South. In this episode, Anna Bell spoke to Karen Perrin, iconic Memphis radio host.

Karen Perrin MEMPHIS RADIO HOST

K

aren Perrin has been waking up Mid-Southerners for decades on morning radio, most notably on WRVR 104.5 The River. A native Memphian, she made the move to Collierville nearly eighteen years ago with her husband. It’s not uncommon to see Perrin serving the Collierville community, such as emceeing the Independence Day Celebration. Perrin’s radio career came out of her love for music. While attending the University of Alabama, she worked at her college radio station and found her passion for communicating through the air waves.

“IT STARTED WITH A LOVE OF MUSIC... AND THAT WAS JUST SOMETHING THAT I GRAVITATED TOWARD.” - Karen Perrin

“It started with a love of music... and that was just something that I gravitated toward. It’s very, very fortunate that when I came home from Alabama, I was able to work in radio and do things in the community that I grew up in. That’s a real treat!” she shared.

Being active in the community is an aspect of Perrin’s job that might often go unrealized. Even after working on the morning show, there’s still lots to be done. “We might have events at a car dealership or a furniture store. There was a lot more activity going on, other than just being on the air. We do a lot of philanthropic work. We volunteer our time [and] my volunteer time is normally hosting an event or emceeing something,” said Perrin. Most people automatically assume that if you’re a morning radio host, you must be a morning person, but that’s not always the case! Starting with her first gig at FM 100 to most recently at WRVR 104.5, Perrin has only worked for morning shows. She shared, “You just make yourself become [a morning person]. Now I am [one], simply because if you stay up too late, getting up at 3:45am is not quite as fun.” When it comes to her career, Perrin said, “The best part of it is the fun that we have, not only on the air, but off the air. I have been fortunate to work with people that I like!” Her enthusiasm for both her career and her coworkers translate into her time on air, as she hopes that, “We help people take their minds off things for a little bit by [playing] a couple of songs that will put them in a good mood. But also, we want to make you laugh. We just want you to have an enjoyable morning! I think we just want to make people happy. And that’s all you can hope to do, because at the end of four hours, you don’t know that you’ve done that or if you’ve done that, but you certainly hope that you have.” While she’s spending time making her listeners happy, Perrin is passionate about others finding their “why” as well. She said, “I always hope that people can find their happiness… find their passion and get to do what they like. And you’re not going to like it every day. But if you can find it, whether that is getting to go to work at a floral shop every day or being on the radio or working at a restaurant, do whatever makes you happy!” story | ANNA BELL

W

elcome back to Friday Night Lights! Although we had to take a pause last year from full stands and tailgating, we are excited to be face-toface with a football field once again. Football — and all other sports, for that matter — lacks a certain feeling when we can’t be in the stands, cheering on our favorite teams and players in-person. During this 2021 season, each familiar face in the stands will not only support the players, cheerleaders and band members, but will provide cheer and joy to the community at large. We’ve gone too long without seeing the highs and lows of high

school football together. Parents hugging, teenagers shouting, a crowd standing in unison to watch the final touchdown pass of the evening — that’s what we’re looking forward to this year. Whether you’re a Dragon, Gryphon, Mustang or Saint, we know you’ve been anticipating these Friday night kickoffs for a while now. In the next few pages, you will find the schedules, team photos and coaches for our four local high schools: Collierville High School, Briarcrest Christian School, Houston High School and St. George’s Independent School. Show up, show out and support these hometown teams! photos | DANA GOODE, ROGER COTTON PHOTOGRAPHY

KODAchrome Hi everyone! My name is Koda. I’m a two-year-old, male Shepherd/Husky mix living at the Collierville Animal Shelter. I used to belong to some humans until something happened and they could no longer care for me. One day they loaded me up in the car for a ride. A car ride, whoo-hoo! But this turned out to be a bad ride. They drove for a while, stopped the car, got me out and then left me there by the road, alone and confused. I was lost and heartbroken! I drank from puddles and wondered how I could get food. I guess some humans think that dogs can easily survive on the streets. Not true! I wandered for days until a kind human took pity and arranged for me to get to the animal shelter.

“MAKES YOU THINK ALL THE WORLD’S A SUNNY DAY...” - KODACHROME, PAUL SIMON When I arrived at the shelter, the humans were shocked by how weak and skinny I was. They said I was skin and bones. Everything was strange there and I was terrified. After what had happened to me, I was positive I couldn’t trust anyone, even the kind humans at the shelter. However, time does heal wounds. The bath, food, walks and attention I have gotten here at the shelter have allowed me to blossom. I have returned to a healthy weight, shrugged off my fear and learned to trust again. Now, the humans say I’m majestic looking! They comment on my shiny, fluffy fur and my beautifully masked face. But unlike superheroes, my mask is not to hide my identity. On the contrary, I’m here so I can be discovered! I’m looking for my forever home. I’m a happy-natured guy who is good on a leash and looks forward to my walks. I’m athletic, need exercise and love to run. I love humans but, due to my size and occasional food protection (from my starvation days), I would do best with older children. I am outgoing, love being petted and have I mentioned that I love humans? Well, I do! Are you looking for a beautiful, happy guy like me to complete your home? If so, please go to this thing called the Collierville Animal Shelter’s website and fill out an application. Don’t forget to put Koda on it. I can’t wait to meet you!

XOXO,

Koda

Why Whataburger, Why Now? OU R

EM ERGING

As a native Texan, I have had my fair share of the tasty delights offered by Whataburger®. In fact, when Melanie and I travel back and forth to Dallas, we always visit the Whataburger® in the airport. Whataburger® has always been a Texas brand (founded in Corpus Christi in 1950), with 700 of their 850 stores located in the Lone Star State. Collierville has been pursuing the Whataburger® brand for years with phone calls, site selection contacts, marketing materials, storytelling and an indirect relationship with one of my relative’s neighbors, who is an executive at their headquarters. Until 2019, Whataburger® was not interested in expanding outside their traditional markets. However, when Chicago-based investment company BDT Capital acquired Whataburger®, that changed. Like I have shared before, “when they expand into the Memphis market, Collierville will benefit.” Whataburger® recently announced five Memphis area locations, including one in Collierville. Pass the spicy ketchup, please! Not all brands — be it a restaurant, retailer, corporation, manufacturer or commercial enterprise — are looking for the same things in an expansion and relocation market. For example, when it comes

to restaurant location criteria, some want a shopping center endcap, an anchor tenant such as Kroger® or close proximity to a Chick-Fil-A®. Others are only interested in the intersection of the busiest traffic zone in your community, such as Poplar and Byhalia. Traffic counts, competing brands, visibility, demographics and overall community health and growth trajectories are top of mind when a market is considered. Another tidbit that has been shared before but is worth repeating is that many times a

community will not be considered until they pass the magic 50,000 population line. As of summer 2021, Collierville sits at 52,167. So, what’s next? We continue to broadly and strategically promote the Collierville brand as our community is wellpositioned for future growth on all market fronts. Chipotle© has announced plans to add 200 stores in 2021 and beyond, and they currently have 5 stores in the Memphis area, so we shall see. Chicken Salad Chick® has strong growth aspirations with 50 new stores planned per year in the Southeast and Midwest, with 500 total stores desired by 2025 year end. And what expansion discussion in Collierville would be complete without a reference to Publix®? You can gauge a brand’s expansion path by where they are investing their assets. Publix® is currently building a 1,800,000 square foot addition at their Greensboro, North Carolina distribution facility. This $400,000,000 investment in infrastructure further supports their Atlantic Coast growth strategy. We have the land, infrastructure, demographics, a strong commercial base and our population continues to climb. What’s next? Only time will tell.

Your Great Commission AS

PARENTS

Parents, if you did not already know, you are the primary disciple makers of your home. The fulfillment of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20), also known as God’s purpose for your life, starts with you leading your children. That is a hefty calling, but do not let its weight burden you (Matthew 11:28-30). However, you should also not have the ego to think that you can accomplish what only Christ can do (1 Timothy 2:5, John 6:44). “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.” Ephesians 2:8 Of course, this role is not an excuse to forsake the blessing of community, especially after the season of isolation you and your kids have just endured. Christ has designed us for connections (Romans 12:5, Hebrews 10:25). We know your kids need to catch up on cultivating relationships, making memories and establishing a firm spiritual foundation. It is my prayer, however, that while reengaging in your social circles this fall – sending kids back to school, visiting with friends and family and worshiping at your local church – that you do not lose sight of your influence. God’s desire is for you to be the primary source of spiritual investment in the lives of your children (Proverbs 22:6).

Metaphorically speaking, if the plane is going down and the air masks drop, you are not ringing for the stewardess or asking your neighbor to help your child before doing it yourself. Likewise, you need to make sure your own mask is secure before rushing to their aid. “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” - Deuteronomy 6:6-7 Model for them what it looks like to read the Word daily. Invite your kids into your prayer life and share how God is responding. Be like Jesus and break bread together, consistently! Be willing to show them your scars and shed light on how Christ has redeemed you and is using your story for His glory (John 1:5, Philippians 1:6). Their first reflection of their Heavenly Father will be through you.

REALTOR TIPS SPEND TIME OUTDOORS THIS FALL

One of the best parts about living in Collierville is that we get to experience four seasons. It seems like I am always excited for the next change in the season, but the transition to fall is always my favorite. The excitement of the new school year, Friday Night Lights, college football season and less humidity are all things I look forward to in the fall. The cooler temps also lead to more opportunities to spend time with family and friends outside. Fall is definitely the best time of the year to enjoy outdoor spaces at your home. Whether it’s a screened porch, outdoor fireplace/ pit, outdoor kitchen or something as simple as patio lights over a concrete patio, the mild temperatures of fall create the perfect environment for enjoying these amenities. Homeowners and buyers have become much more aware of the importance of having comfortable and usable living spaces outdoors, as well as indoors. The pandemic has changed the way that homeowners and buyers prioritize amenities in 42

TOURCOLLIERVILLE.COM

their homes. Outdoor spaces are near the top of the list. According to Fixr.com©, who recently surveyed real estate professionals, 80% of respondents agreed that the number one use for outdoor spaces was gathering with friends and family. Experts were also asked what would be the most popular outdoor feature for 2021. 61% agreed that outdoor kitchens are number one. Outdoor kitchens have been popular for several years. However, they became especially popular during the pandemic because they allowed people to gather with family and friends in an outdoor setting. Depending on size and materials, the average cost for a 300-square foot outdoor kitchen is $13,000. When it comes to outdoor design, there are many options to consider. 48% of experts revealed the combination of a porch and patio is what most people desire in a home. The porch can add to the home’s curb appeal, while the patio offers a more private

septem be r/oc tobe r 2021

living space. Installing a porch has an average cost of $20,000, whereas a patio is just under $5,000. If you are looking to enjoy your home more this fall or prepare your home to sell, focusing on outdoor spaces can help you achieve your goal. Remember that buyers are seeking a space where they can gather with friends and family, so no matter the size of your outdoor space, you should highlight it as a spot for gatherings.

HOME TOUR PRESENTED BY: DESIGNER WHOLESALE

W

ith a beautiful home set on a large piece of property, Juan and Stephanie Soto had just one goal in mind when they decided to renovate their kitchen and master bathroom: update. “The house was built about 12 years ago,” said Stephanie. “The original kitchen was much darker, with mustard-colored walls and that red-sandy tile.” This time around, the Sotos opted for a classic, neutral look, starting with painting their home a soothing grey. In February 2021, they decided to renovate the master bathroom and then the kitchen. “We thought, ‘Let’s just get it all done,’ if we’re gonna live in construction, let’s just do it,” said Stephanie. Within four months, both projects were complete.

THE MASTER BATHROOM The main focus in the bathroom? The show-stopping, wooden shower with two rows of tile accents. “It’s just beautiful,” Stephanie said. “I had no idea if I would like it when it was first shown to me, and now… it’s just beautiful.” At Juan’s request, it also can act as a steam shower, with a control panel, a shower “window” to let the steam in or out and the possibility for incorporating diffuser oils, such as eucalyptus or lavender. Next to the shower is a deep tub, with a large lip and gorgeous black hardware. “We had originally been looking for an oval tub, but we found

44

TOURCOLLIERVILLE.COM

se ptem be r/oc tobe r 2021

this one instead,” said Stephanie. Designer Wholesale even installed a special shower head into the tub, specifically angled so that it doesn’t spray everywhere. The lighting fixtures, bathroom vanities and medicine cabinets are all brand-new, done in the same dark wood as the shower. Additionally, Designer Wholesale custom-made built-ins for the master closets, again using that dark wood to make the space cohesive. Using a variety of plants and natural materials, the Sotos have created a peaceful place to start and end their day.

THE KITCHEN The main priority in the kitchen was to brighten the space. Other than that, “I didn’t really know what I wanted, so I was really guided by Designer Wholesale,” said Stephanie. To achieve that brightness, new tile floors, cream cabinets and beautiful granite countertops were installed. While maintaining the original footprint of the kitchen, Designer Wholesale added smaller cabinets on top of the existing ones to increase storage space and adjusted the sink counter to be one level. This helped open up the kitchen to the breakfast nook and family room. Additionally, they redid the tiles around the two fireplaces, tying in a bright aspect to the surrounding rooms. The kitchen is full of small, but distinctive features. The microwave is carefully hidden under the island. A pot filler — designed so you can stop carrying heavy pots of water from kitchen sink to stove top — is set against a new backsplash, which Stephanie credits to Designer Wholesale. “I’d never had a backsplash before, because I couldn’t make up my mind on what I liked, but I love this one,” she said. This already beautiful home has been updated to make it the perfect home for quite some time. From the tile in the shower to the backsplash in the kitchen, each detail has been carefully considered. “[Designer Wholesale] was so patient and very good [at] making sure we were happy,” said Stephanie. These stylish but classic rooms are certainly here to stay.
