Letter from the Editor

THIS IS MY

HOMETOWN Growing up in Collierville, back to school was always an exciting time. Naturally, working now for a town magazine, in some ways I still get to experience those same hometown emotions each year when we publish our Friday Night Lights issue. I also have a greater appreciation for all that goes into Friday nights in Collierville – particularly from those four coaches on the cover. For us, Friday nights are an experience,

“A trophy carries dust. Memories last forever.” - Mary Lou Retton

where football is center stage. For them, it’s their job and they’ve been putting in the extra hours all summer long to set the stage. So be sure to stop by page (26) and get better acquainted with your Friday night conductors. As our four Collierville coaches stand together on the cover, we hope to communicate the friendly rivalry while symbolizing the unity of our town – shoulder to shoulder. Similarly, I can’t help but feel my hometown radius is a little bigger than usual this year. Now, more than I’ve ever seen, there is a unity forming in and around Memphis. Sports is perhaps the greatest social unifier; seemingly bringing us together unlike anything else. It

Tour Collierville / Chief Editor Austin Essary

allows us to set aside all our differences, if just for a brief moment, to stand behind a single force. That’s why Penny Hardaway and Mike Miller are so important for our expanded town – and why we’ve included them in this sportsoriented version of Tour Collierville. They are doing great things for Memphis and, at Tour Collierville, we encourage you to show them some hometown support. As the temperature simmers down, these guys are turning up the heat. However, at the end of the day, those ‘Friday Night Lights’ bring people together. And that’s really the point, right? So hit the stands with your game face on, because: This is Our Hometown.

On the Cover: Special thanks to our four local head football coaches for putting their rivalries aside for a short time, and helping us capture the perfect Friday Night Lights cover. We would also like to welcome Cindy B. Thymius Photography to our Creative Team, and couldn’t be happier with the outcome of this issue’s cover. Thanks, Cindy!

A

Penny F O R YO U R T H O U G H T S . . . Hi, I’m Penny! No silly, not the coin or the Hardaway kind… I’m a five-year-old, female, beaglemix currently living at the Collierville Animal Shelter. I used to live with my human family, but their financial situation changed and they could no longer care for me. When they brought me to the shelter I don’t know who was more brokenhearted, them or me! In my previous home I lived with dogs, cats, and some small humans they called children, so I’m not selective about my situation. The family would play with me all the time and even throw balls for me. Do you know to this day I still love holding tennis balls in my mouth and waiting for playtime? Even though I miss my family, I’m very adaptable, so I’ve settled in nicely at CAS. I am loved here and feel like I can make it. Now I’m just waiting for my forever human to come and find me. But don’t feel sad for me, come in and meet me! The humans here say I’m a sweet girl who loves everyone. I’m housebroken, crate trained, and walk well on a leash. I know… perfect! In the interest of full disclosure, I am heartworm positive, but the shelter will take care of my treatment, so no worries there! Do you think waking up to a friendly face like mine would be the best way to start your day? I do! And here are a few other ways I could make your life more awesome…

TO UR CO L LIE RVIL LE .COM

2. I won’t hog the remote. 3. I’ll remind you that riding in the car is one of the most amazing things in life. 4. I love to go on walks, so we could get fit together… or just snuggle on the couch. Your call! 5. Every day becomes an adventure when you share it with a dog! I’m really hoping to find my new, forever family. Do you think it could be you? What are you waiting for? Swing by the Collierville Animal Shelter and lets meet in person. And tell your friends that there are many more deserving cats and dogs here waiting to find their forever homes too! XOXO,

Penny Julie Weaver. Collierville Animal Services is located at 559 E. South Street, Collierville. Call 901-457-2670 or come by to find your perfect companion!

Delivering

Smiles D

espite having over 50,000 citizens in the Town of Collierville, the community thrives on its small-town charm and friendly neighbors! Whether you were coming to market long ago, or strolling through the exciting construction phases of today, the heart of the community is in the Town Square. Newcomers meet the locals along these sidewalks, shop unique boutiques, and later dine on some of the best food in the area! This feeling of community happens when we gather together in one-of-a-kind places like The Square, and Collierville would not exude such a feeling without citizens like Demetrius Hobson, who is known for delivering your mail with a smile! Hobson walks around the Town Square giving shop and restaurant owners their mail and a smile every visit, without fail. Even newcomers such as Laura Wiseman, from Main Street Collierville, has noticed his cheery disposition:

“Demetrius always has a great attitude and a smile on his face,” said Wiseman. “Being new to working on The Square, it is so nice to have a mailman who always has a kind word or a ‘Hey, How are you doing?’. I have also seen him post tips on some of the Collierville pages in order to inform and help out the citizens of Collierville! He is a great asset to our community!” - Laura Wiseman, Main Street Collierville

Hobson’s disposition is infectious and positively impacts people on The Square every day. Candy Craig and her crew at C.J. Lilly & Company enjoy Hobson’s visits during their long work days:

“I don’t think I have ever seen Demetrius without a smile on his face,” said Craig, “He has a kind and giving spirit that is infectious. He is a part of our ‘family’ and a bright spot in our work day.” - Candy Craig, C.J. Lilly & Co.

Being visited by Hobson is one of the many perks of working on the Square. Watty Brooks Hall, owner of The Brooks Collection, loves seeing her friend everyday no matter what he is delivering: 18

TO UR CO L LIE RVIL LE .COM

se pte m be r/oc tobe r 201 9

“Demetrius is one of the most sincere and engaging people I have ever met,” said Hall. “The first time you meet him, you feel like you’ve been friends with him forever. He always has a smile on his face, which makes it so much easier when he hands you a stack of bills. I am so proud to call him a friend.” - Watty Brooks Hall, The Brooks Collection

Demetrius Hobson has been delivering smiles and mail on The Town Square for more than four years. Hobson has become such an asset to the Collierville Town Square that without him, The Square would have a big hole in the middle of it. Thank you, Demetrius, for always being so kind and friendly to everyone you meet, and for making the Town of Collierville a better place! story | AK LEWELLEN

Did you know that practicing yoga just 5 or 10 minutes a day can have huge benefits for people of all ages? Applying a yoga mindset to your daily life can bring extraordinary benefits to the entire family, and while this sounds great, the thought of adding one more thing into an already busy day does not seem very relaxing. Yoga is a physical, mental, and spiritual practice with a 5,000-year history in ancient Indian philosophy and truth be told, it is a way of life. Try incorporating a regular yoga practice into your daily routine and find out for yourself the many benefits yoga will bring to your life!

Physical postures – The human body is made to move! The average American spends half their day (12 hours) sitting. A few simple poses a day, such as cat and cow, spinal twists, triangle pose, and child’s pose can result in improved flexibility and range of motion, strength, and balance!

Breathing techniques - As a yoga instructor, I constantly remind and encourage my students to focus and return to the breath. Focusing on the breath not only guides your asana practice on the mat, but easily transfers into everyday life. Taking just a few minutes out of your day to close your eyes and notice your breath can help calm your mind and allow you to refocus on what is most important.

• Mind-Body Awareness – By combining purposeful movement

with focus on the breath, yoga creates a relationship between your thoughts and emotions (mind) and your physical being (body). Research has shown that yoga and mindfulness can improve focus, memory, self-esteem, academic performance, and classroom behavior, and can even reduce stress and anxiety in children. Make a point to carve out time for yoga practice so it becomes routine.

Gratitude Practice – Studies show that giving thanks for something you are grateful for regularly results in more positive emotions, stronger enthusiasm, better sleep, and can even build stronger immune systems! Children practicing gratitude have been shown to be more content with their overall life. Keep a ‘Gratitude Jar’ to drop in a message of thanks. Another great idea is to take a gratitude walk (unplug, leave the electronics at home), giving yourself time to reflect on the day!

Yoga can be done anywhere! If you already have a practice, keep practicing, and if you are new to yoga, take the first step towards a happier, healthier life today!

C hristmas

ON THE HIGH-SEAS!

The days are getting shorter and the weather is getting cooler; school is back in full swing, which means Christmas is just around the corner! We are seeing more and more families that are spread throughout the country, who come together for the holidays by traveling. A recent survey was taken, asking adults and children alike, “Do you remember everything you received for Christmas?” The answer was always no, but you would probably remember that Christmas when everyone went on a trip together and made memories worth talking about for years to come.

Bringing your family together for the holidays by taking a trip makes Christmas easy! No cooking or cleaning, no decorating a tree, no figuring out where everyone is going to sleep, and everyone gets to have their own space! Not only that, but you really only have three big decisions to make: destination, date, and cruise line. Plus, a cruise can accommodate the entire family, both young and old, near and far. Once you’re on board the ship, family members can be as active or relaxed as they wish, stay together, or go off independently. Plus, your parents

or in-laws can easily get one-on-one time with their grandchildren without a hassle. Royal Caribbean loves the Christmas holiday, which you’ll see reflected in everything they do. The entire ship is decked out in red and green décor, and your winter wonderland is complete with a merry tree-lighting ceremony right on the dock and an arrival parade with Santa himself. Families with kids will love the many crafts and activities throughout their journey to keep the little ones happy! Children can even send letters straight to the North Pole! For the teenagers, there is a special holiday themed Adventure youth program. Of course, no December is complete without an Ugly Sweater Christmas Party — they’ll have one of those too! Feel right at home with the merriment of the season during your Christmas cruise. One of the best things about Christmas on a cruise ship is the variety of tropical destinations you can set sail to. Have you heard about Royal Caribbean’s new waterpark? It’s called “Perfect Day to Cococay,” and is a private island located in the Bahamas. It’s the first of its kind, and offers guests both adventure and relaxation! On Cococay, adrenaline-loving travelers will be most excited to hit up Thrill Waterpark, which offers 13 waterslides & the largest wave pool in the Caribbean. The crown jewel of the park is Daredevil’s Peak, the tallest waterslide in the Caribbean, which is a whopping

“Royal Caribbean loves the Christmas holiday, which you’ll see reflected in everything they do.” 135 feet. Best of all, guests from Royal Caribbean are the only ones that are allowed to enter the park, which means a fun day with shorter lines. For a different type of thrill, the island has a 1,600 foot-long-zip-line course that crisscrosses the island. Cruisers can choose between a dry landing or a wet one in the water. For the aerial fans, the new Up, Up and Away helium balloon ride will take cruisers 450 feet into the air for spectacular views of the island, ship and azure waters of the Bahamas. Looking for something a bit quieter? They’ve got that too! You can head over to a different beach

area where there are Caribbean-style bars, lounges with umbrellas and more! It’s called Chill Island. Highly anticipated is this December’s opening of the adjacent Coco Beach Club with overwater cabanas, a 2,600-square–foot infinity pool with water lounges, a club and deck area, and beachside cabanas and day beds. We couldn’t think of a better place to spend some time, when at home it’s cold and dreary! Christmas is a special time for families, friends and loved ones to come together. It also affords a rare opportunity to freeze such social gatherings in time by building long-lasting memories that will be talked about for years to come. Start a new tradition this year, and focus on the joy of the season in paradise and creating a Christmas that everyone will remember forever! LIFELONG

LEARNING Most everyone can agree that it is difficult to achieve a good quality of life without literacy and technological skills. Learning doesn’t only occur in school, therefore successful people need access to information for continual education. Learning opportunities must be present throughout the community and persistent throughout a lifetime. The public Library plays an important role in providing a virtual and physical space for both the development of early literacy and lifelong learning. The Library staff are what makes programs, events, and patrons’ dreams a reality! Over 550 programs were offered last year, which over 14,000 people attended. Staff are responsible for a number of activities ranging from:

• Fostering reading skills for children • Assisting adults in upgrading or learning new skills • Ensuring a relevant collection of books are available, both physically and digitally

• Providing access to a vast array of basic and sophisticated technologies, like Microsoft Office and VEX Robots that would otherwise be unavailable to the public. Resources found in the library include STEAM backpacks, magazines, and book club kits. Not to mention a DVD collection that receives high praise and use from patrons because it includes classics and hard to find films and TV

shows! E-books, e-magazines, digital audiobooks, computers, a website, an art gallery which showcases local artists are all provided resources, as well as access to free vetted tutors online through tutor.com by the Princeton Review. Nurture your inner artist from one of the newly launched resources called Creativebug. It provides unlimited access to over 1,000 online video art and craft classes that you can watch anytime, anywhere. We are the first library in Tennessee to offer this resource! You only need a Collierville Library card to gain access. The platform features everything a crafter might need: note-taking space, materials lists, and a written transcript of the video, downloadable recipes, patterns and templates. The videos range in length from a few minutes to a few hours and are geared toward everybody from kids and beginners to seasoned pros.

Did you know that a patron enters the Library every minute we are open? You can’t walk into Amazon or call up Facebook and ask a question, and Google never knows if it provides the right link. No one from LinkedIn will sit with you and help you design your résumé. We provide face-to-face help. We build confidence in the use of technology and help young moms with early literacy skills. We connect people with books, helping them find their next great read. People may go to the Burch Library looking for information, but they find people here. New moms connect at baby story-times, the elderly,

often alone and facing difficult life transitions, attend events and find that they make new friends or learn a new skill, and teens meet-up after school. The library helps create a sense of community and that is very important in this digital age. 830 West Poplar, Suite 1, Collierville, TN 901.853.1568 • www.burrissdds.com

She sits in a place her husband treasured. Because both husbands were regulars and known by staff, sympathy cards were sent to the families. The wives expressed that this personal touch meant so much to them.

GUARD

MR. BASKETBALL 2019 wo years from now, if all goes as planned, Kennedy Chandler will be on your TV, playing for a big-time basketball program like Illinois, Kansas, Duke or the University of Memphis. For now, Chandler will fearlessly lead the Briarcrest Saints offense in his upcoming Junior year as a four-star point guard, currently ranked 28th in the 247 Sports 2021 rankings. Chandler grew up a Cordova native, surrounded by basketball influences. His father and older sister, who both respectively played the game, were always eager to shoot a few with him after dinner. From a young age, Chandler showed 30

incredible talent and a high basketball IQ, according to Briarcrest Head Basketball Coach, John Harrington. The two go as far back as Chandler’s third grade year when Harrington’s son and Chandler played on the same team. In one particularly tight game, with only seconds left on the clock, Chandler ran the ball across half court and immediately stopped, holding the ball until time ran out, knowing that if he maintained possession of the ball - his team would win the game. While most third graders can’t comprehend the complexities of the game, Harrington knew then that Chandler showed promise.

Run down the court to Chandler’s eighth grade year, showing more promise than ever, he was allowed to dress out with the Saints’ Varsity team; the first permitted to do so in Harrington’s seventeen year tenure with BCS. “When he came in, he changed the whole complexity of the game,” says Harrington. “Every coach knew it. Every player knew it. He was one of the best players in the league from the moment he stepped on the court. Kennedy is gifted and an incredibly hard worker. He’s got a killer instinct and if you go back and look at the stats from all the big games, he was either MVP, or one of the most important people on the floor during that game. He rises to those occasions and is dedicated to the game.” Despite never starting a game his Freshman year due to a strong Senior bench, Chandler was still voted the third best player in the league by the Division II-AA coaches. This past season as a Sophomore, Chandler was listed as 6’ 1’’, 160 lbs, and ranked number 1 in the 2021 Top Basketball Recruits in Tennessee. He started for the Saints, ultimately leading the team to a Division II-AA State Championship title as the leading scorer in that game with 20 points and 5 rebounds, claiming the tournament MVP award. His efforts also earned him the title of Mr. Basketball 2019 in the state of Tennessee.

“Basketball is something special in my life,” remarks Chandler. “God gave me the ability to play this sport, and I’m just very blessed for that ability. I started playing when I was five and I just worked hard every day since then. I just knew I could be something and I’m glad I put in the time.” - Kennedy Chandler, Junior Briarcrest Christian School

This year has been a busy one for Chandler, now considered one of the fastest rising college basketball recruits in the country. Chandler was a show out with MOKAN Elite playing up a year on Nike’s EYBL circuit. Offers have been raining in since he played the Peach Jam and led his team to victory. Rounding out the Summer, Chandler was invited to the USA Basketball Junior National Team’s Minicamp in July. “It’s been a lot of rippin’ and runnin’ and I’m tired, but I’m gonna fight through it,” says Chandler. It’s easy to get behind this rising star in our own backyard, making a full court press towards a very bright future. When asked if Chandler could envision himself in Memphis Tiger Blue, a mile-wide grin flashed across his face before maturely answering, “I’m waiting patiently to figure out where I want to go.” Chandler will spend the last half of his high school career working on being more vocal with his teammates and a good leader on the court. He made sure to throw in that a few more BCS State Championships wouldn’t hurt. story | ANNA BELL photos | MICHAEL STIRES & BRIARCREST CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

make the city better,” Boogie Ellis says. Hardaway and Miller did their job in bringing the team to its glorious number one position, and Miller, more than probably anyone else besides Hardaway, knows Memphis basketball from the core - Grit and Grind mixed with great recruiting. “Some of us decommitting from other places just shows the power that [Coach] Penny has as one of the greatest, and with Mike by his side, we know we are under greatness,” DJ Jeffries said. Before ever hitting #1 in recruit ranking, their first season under Hardaway this past year had the Tigers at 22 wins and 14 losses, placing them fifth in the AAC bracket while being predicted to finish eighth. On top of that, they also made it to the second-round of the National Invitation Tournament. Keep in mind, Hardaway had little to no time to put together the 2018 recruiting class. But it’s Hardaway we are talking about, so of course, he pulled it together, representing Bluff City better than ever. Hardaway has been around basketball his whole life, becoming known at Treadwell High School where he scored more than 3,000 career points. He went on to play for the Tigers, where he led them to the NCAA Tournaments’ Elite Eight in 1992, his sophomore season, while also becoming an All-American. That summer, he received an invite to scrimmage the “Dream Team” (widely considered one of the best basketball teams of all time) before the Barcelona Olympics. In the following season (‘92-’93), he had two tripledoubles for the Tigers, and only two other Memphis players have had as many as one such performance. Hardaway was drafted #3 overall in the NBA Draft, making him the most successful player to come out of the Tigers up to that point. He played from 1993 to 2008 with the Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks, and the Miami Heat, while also playing in four NBA All-Star games and earning first-team All-NBA honors after the 1994-96 seasons. At this point you may be thinking, so what if he played; how does that make him a good coach? Besides having the on-floor knowledge of what it is like to be in an actual game and play with teammates, Hardaway coached Lester Middle School and then East High School to three consecutive state championships (2016-18), which drastically helped when it came to recruiting because of his relationship with certain players he had already coached. “I think that with me coaching middle school, AAU and high school; with Mike having an AAU program, having kids that are in middle school and high school and Tony has been in the game forever, we identify with the kids differently,” Penny said. “Our swag is different. We’re not just normal coaches. We are players as well as being coaches.” The players have made it a point to acknowledge one of the biggest reasons they are here, and that is the fact that they are under such talented men. “Our practices are very detailed, and we know we are learning

through two great NBA players so we just have to be locked into the whole practice in order to really learn and get better,” Boogie said. “Their skill set for us to learn under is a great reason behind quite a few of us being here.” Mike Miller shot off with his basketball career at the start of college, leading his team as a sophomore to the 2000 NCAA championship, while also becoming well known for his outstanding threepointer. His jump into the NBA, similarly to Penny’s, started with the Orlando Magic until he found himself with the Grizzlies. He took his time testing the waters by checking out the Minnesota Timberwolves, Washington Wizards, and Miami Heat, but couldn’t quite stay away from Memphis because he again found himself with the Grizzlies. Being made offers one just can’t refuse with such talent, he found himself bouncing teams twice more before becoming the Tigers assistant coach. Miller’s skill was an investment in our city in itself, and rather than metaphorically speaking, Hardaway and Miller both have financially invested in our city significantly. In 2010, Hardaway helped revitalize the Bluff City Classic, a summer basketball league that provides a high level of competition for men and women players from the college, professional, and elite high school ranks, while also providing funding to build the University of Memphis Sports Hall of Fame. In 2011, he announced plans for a permanent $20 million multi-sports facility named FastBreak Courts Sportsplex in Cordova. As for Miller, right around the corner from us in Germantown, “Let it Fly” is a restaurant he will open this year. It isn’t going to be your ordinary restaurant either, but yet a combination of a sports bar and TopGolf driving range for fun with family and friends. All that said, bleeding blue is exactly what we have in both of our coaches this season. To us, this is exactly what we needed to recruit, but looking beyond our city, we have to realize we really do have two men on our hands that are still fairly young, one 36

a former NBA player and city trophy, and the other a 2x NBA champion and past favorite Grizzly, making it a total powerhouse for recruiting those outside of our city limits. Their faith in this city is like no other, and the Tiger’s future just keeps getting brighter. Coaches Hardaway and Miller both acknowledge how driven and motivated they are, and how having the same mindset is such a huge part in motivating players to want to play under them, but there are three underlying factors that were key in landing who they landed, and those are: having previous relationships

with certain players, landing the top recruit at the beginning, and being the power team that they are as coaches with fan bases. Hardaway knew Jeffries (power forward) from his first three seasons at East High School, and Wiseman (center) from his last season of high school ball, because he chose to move to Memphis to play under Penny. Although it was only one season, their relationship is extremely strong. As the top recruit, Wiseman being the first to choose Memphis really motivated other players to want to come simply to be able to play with him. What is really

mind raking about it all, is the power the fan base has had when it’s come to this whole recruiting process: “The visit was honestly incredible,” Quinones said. “The atmosphere at the games was great, and I was overwhelmed by the fanbase. The last two visits I went on weren’t like that. It felt like I took a million pictures with [Memphis] fans over the weekend, and the fans were chanting my name and stuff, it was crazy.” It was even mentioned that fans being on social media, being hyped up about the recruits, influenced all of them, because like Hardaway said, “the kids just want to be wanted.” On top of it all, the coaches’ dedication drove it all to being a definite. Miller had gone to see Quinones play multiple times since Memphis had started recruiting him, and the two built a close relationship. Being a well-known shooter himself, Quinones said he will learn a lot from Miller about being a knock down three-point shooter: “Coach Miller was an incredible threepoint shooter in the NBA, so I know I could learn a lot from him as far as my shooting goes. He’s such a smart coach, and I know if I messed up or anything I could go to the sidelines and talk to him and he’d help me improve.” In Hardaway’s eyes, Precious Achiuwa was the hardest to recruit, because he had so many players he was friends with that wanted him to stay playing with them. It took him breaking away from his comfort zone to decide to join Memphis and start a new path. “I trust Penny and Mike,” Precious said. “It feels like home already and I know it is helping me prepare for the next level.” Achiuwa not only has made it a point to give credit to the coaches when it came to his decision to join Memphis, but because he was the last recruit, he had the chance to see what talent had joined the team already, making it that much easier for him to make his decision. Hardaway and Miller both resemble each other in the sense that they have always been leaders, and they’re their

own toughest critics, which is why they know that if they go somewhere together to recruit or practice, they’ll definitely make something happen. “This is way different. I mean, way different,” Penny said. “Because, when you start landing the kids that they didn’t think you could get — and it just kept coming week after week or day after day — that’s just major because it doesn’t happen every day.” Getting the team together, seeing them play and practice together for the past few months has been nothing shy of great according to Hardaway. “I have seen toughness, a commitment to stay together and a commitment to allow themselves to be taught, it’s like they are all in,” Penny said.

Above: Coach Hardaway in the Tiger’s game vs. the Bucs. Far Left: Mike Miller coaches a young Tiger at practice.

“EVERYBODY’S BUYING IN, HAVEN’T HAD ONE ROUGH SPOT YET, EVERYONE IS WORKING HARD. EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS THE MAGNITUDE OF WHAT’S GOING ON AND IT’S BEEN GREAT SEEING IT FROM THE YOUNG GUYS AND THE GUYS FROM LAST YEAR.” - Coach Hardaway The opportunity has never presented itself so eminently, Memphis. The ball is in our court, and as our team has pieced together so well, we as a city have the opportunity to come together and keep the momentum going. The time is now, to back our team and represent the city that doesn’t bluff. G O O D BY E TO T H E T I E Inside Collierville High School’s cafeteria, roughly 200 people gathered to remember the legacy of Collierville Schools’ first Superintendent, John S. Aitken. Multiple heartfelt speeches were shared of memories made during Aitken’s 39 years of service. During his time in the Shelby County School System, Aitken has been a math teacher, coach, Principal and Superintendent. Looking back on his nearly 40-year tenure, Aitken remarks, “There is nothing more rewarding as a lifelong educator than seeing your kids, your students, succeed.”

ollierville High School will undergo major faculty transitions in the upcoming school year with several new seats in leadership positions. Arguably three of the most influential seats being filled are the roles of Superintendent, Principal, and Head Football Coach. In the following pages, Tour Collierville is excited to share with you the personal biographies and lives of these individuals that will ultimately impact the direction, morale, and success of the Collierville High School year. The new Superintendent moves to Town from Bristol, TN bringing expertise in areas that will help the Collierville School System as a whole, shine. His passion towards education can be experienced in his heartfelt letter to you, the Collierville community. The not entirely new Principal comes

The new Head Football Coach returns to his alma mater with pride and contagious spirit towards the sports program with plans of boosting school morale in the athletic seasons to come. What’s the saying... “Once A Dragon... Always A Dragon!” Naturally, with change comes anticipation on how things will function with new Collierville leaders stepping forward. After several hours spent with these individuals, hearing their stories and dreams for their allocated positions, Collierville appears to be in fantastic hands with a very bright future ahead. Dear Collierville Community,

I am honored and privileged to serve as Superintendent of Collierville Schools and to make the community home for my family! The system is on a great path already. Achievement data and other evidence all point to a community with high expectations for students, teachers, and district leadership. It takes community support to meet and exceed those expectations. One does not have to go far to realize that the support for schools in Collierville is significant. I have personally had conversations with many folks, including parents, business leaders, and others who speak with pride about the quality of education our students receive. That same support is also visibly evident when touring schools and seeing the programming that is available to students. As just one example, Collierville High School is an amazing facility with academic paths for every student, including core classes, advanced placement courses, and an array of early post-secondary opportunities to prepare students for college and career. It is my intention to work with all of you, the Board of Education, and district teachers and leaders to continue and build upon the great things that are happening in our schools. With that in mind, I am anxious to listen and learn from you about your aspirations for your children. I want to know the things that you value, and hear your ideas that will advance our mission to prepare students for a life of scholarship, integrity, and service. Nothing will hold us, and more importantly, our children, back if we work together to continually examine, refine, and improve the opportunities we are able to offer students. I am beyond excited about this coming school year! I cannot wait to get into classrooms to see students and talk to them about their goals for the future. I know that Collierville Schools can prepare them to make those dreams come true. Please know that my door is always open. I look forward to meeting and speaking with you in person soon. Sincerely,

-Gary Lilly, Superintendent Collierville Schools 42

t’s no secret that the Collierville school system is paving the way towards a brighter tomorrow for Collierville’s youth. Now that Collierville High has the facility some college campuses can only dream of, paired with faculty and materials to make a difference in the lives of the students by the score, new Principal Roger Jones, III has a vision for the school’s future and his eyes are set on “each student’s tomorrow.” Preparing for his seventeenth year as a Dragon, Jones is invested in the Collierville school system on all fronts. Jones has had close ties to education from the start, coming from a family of educators, and graduating from the University of Memphis with a degree in Education. After several years of teaching in Collierville Schools, in 2012 Jones became Collierville Middle’s Assistant Principal, and two years later he accepted the position as CMS Principal. Jones’ infectious energy towards academics and setting up students for success earned him “Principal of the Year” for Collierville Schools in 2018. “I got into this profession because I really wanted to help kids; that’s all there is to it,” says Jones. “I just wanted to be a teacher that fights for students and work alongside other teachers who would be advocates for those students, and challenge those students as well, because it’s hugely important to me that we engage students in academic struggle. What I mean by that is school should be hard work. It’s not play. Administrators know that we have to prepare kids for their futures. That’s key in making sure that we address the needs of all students.” Jones spent the summer in preparation for the upcoming school year heavily focusing on the district’s program, Vision 20-21, exposing students to high level courses and Tennessee’s program, Early Postsecondary Opportunities, offering advanced placement courses, college level

“WE HAVE A GROWING COMMUNITY IN COLLIERVILLE WITH SUCH A DIVERSE POPULATION. ULTIMATELY I WANT TO BE KNOWN AS THE PRINCIPAL WHO LOOKED TO ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF ALL STUDENTS. I WANT OUR SCHOOL TO BE KNOWN AS THE SCHOOL THAT MET THE NEEDS OF ALL STUDENTS. NOT A FEW. NOT A HANDFUL. ALL STUDENTS.” – Principal Roger Jones, III

exams, and dual enrollment opportunities. “For me, I am going to be heavily dedicated to industry certification, dual enrollment, AP placement and CLEP exams. All of those things will give students some type of college credit, or give students some type of certification before they even leave this building! Preparing them for success,” says Jones. “We have some really high flyers here at Collierville. We want to open those opportunities up to as many students as possible. But also think about students who do graduate and aren’t sure if they want to go to a four year university. What if we can tell that student, while you are here, we can work on an industry certification where you can leave school and go right into the job market. In some cases, students can start their first year of college with Freshman year done, because they have had so many opportunities to get ahead in the high school realm. If a student can possibly explore finishing school with an Associate’s degree or go into a four year university with Freshman year taken care of, that is what I am committed to.” sep temb er/o c to b er 201 9

hile important decisions for the new school year are made behind office desks, strategic plays for the CHS Football program are drawn up in the athletic offices. Collierville High’s new Head Football Coach, Joe Rocconi, and his staff worked hard all summer long to develop a game plan that will ultimately take the Dragons ‘to the promised land.’ Earlier in the year as the summer heat started to set in, you could find Coach Rocconi immersing himself in the game as old video recordings of previous seasons lit up the television screen. His brand new Dragons shirt, ready for all the blood, sweat, and tears that come with the new job, was an outward symbol of his excitement for this upcoming season. But the energy that surrounds him comes from a deeply-rooted pride. Many hours will go into studying this footage before walking his play books into the new Dragons indoor practice facility and putting the x’s and o’s to the test - a challenge he is eager to accept. “I believe I have a huge responsibility [as the new Head Coach], but man, I’m like a kid in a candy store right now, to be honest with you!” says Coach Rocconi. “I’m just so fired up!” Rocconi will start his seventeenth season as a Head Coach, returning to his alma mater. Even though he returns to a new campus and knock-out facility, this 1995 Collierville graduate still carries the same Dragon pride he did when he was wearing his Collierville jersey. Those adolescent years were influential to Rocconi, both playing and learning under Collierville great, Coach Paul Cox. “I still remember a lot still from when I was a Dragon,” says Rocconi. “When I was in High School, Coach Paul Cox was my Head Coach and to me, he was a legend.

“IT IS THE FIRST SPORT, YOU’RE COMING OFF OF SUMMER, AND EVEN THOUGH THE KIDS WON’T SAY IT, THEY’RE FIRED UP TO BE BACK, AND FOR THE FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS! IN THE SOUTH, FOOTBALL IS A PRETTY BIG DEAL, ESPECIALLY HERE AT COLLIERVILLE. I THINK IT [A WIN] CAN START THE YEAR OFF RIGHT FOR EVERYBODY, EVEN THE KIDS THAT ARE NOT PLAYING!”

– Coach Joe Rocconi

I remember thinking what a great man; what a large impact this one person has on a bunch of kids. It didn’t sink in until later that I wanted to be a coach and that I would get those same opportunities. But when I did become a coach, I did think it would be pretty special to come back to where I went to high school. So I have thought about it [coaching at CHS]. It’s pretty special to be able to impact kids lives like my coach did, Coach Cox, and other coaches, like John Humphries. He was one of my coaches as well. Two special men, among many, that did so much, for so many young men. No doubt, I want to carry on their legacy and add to it by putting my spin on it. Taking the program to new heights that they have not seen, that is my goal!” It’s time to show your Dragon Spirit and Coach Rocconi wants to see you in the stands this football season! “Shut down your businesses, come out and support us! Shut down this Town because we need everybody there on a Friday night to get involved! We need you there to get behind these guys. Let’s make it a true family and community deal! Go Dragons!” Story | ANNA BELL Photos | MICHAEL STIRES

WE

CHOOSE

COLLIERVILLE Melanie and I left family and friends in 1994 and moved from Richardson, TX (Dallas) to Collierville. We had a strong network of close family in Dallas, tons of friends from our SMU days, and a strong group of couples from our Sunday School class. It was a tough relocation. I was in the plastic packaging business and the company I worked for in Dallas was acquired by Memphis based, Bryce Corporation. Everyone in Dallas told us “Germantown, Germantown, Germantown,” and that is where we naturally and instinctively looked for our new home. But, everything in our price range in G’Town was older, and we desired something newer. “What’s out there?” I asked the realtor, pointing east towards Collierville. “Oh, that’s Collierville (population around 17,000 in 1994), I don’t know much about it...” said the realtor. “Take us there,” I said, and as they say, the rest is history. Why are you here? What brought you to Collierville? A recent survey of our citizens and some additional research shined some light on the various reasons why people have chosen to plant their roots in Collierville.

WORKING FOR A LIVING Collierville has a burgeoning corporate headquarters component to our economy, with close to 3,700 office oriented jobs in our community. FedEx World Technology Center, Orgill, Helena Agri-Enterprises, JuicePLUS, MCR Safety, and Mueller Industries occupy over 1.5M square feet of office space. Many of the employees of these great partner companies made the decision to move to Collierville 46

TOUR CO LLIE RVIL LE .COM

se pte m be r/oc tobe r 201 9

in order to be only minutes from their place of employment. It is estimated that over 700 of the 2,500 FedEx WTC workforces live in Town. I am positive our other corporate friends have similar housing dynamics. Also, the Memphis MSA boasts some of the shortest commute times in the nation, with Collierville having a 25 minute average commute time (1/3rd of Chicagoans have a 35+ minute commute). With SR-385, Poplar, Winchester, Shelby, and others, travel time to work from Collierville is minimal, thus making it an attractive residential location.

CORPORATE RELOCATION When an individual or family begins the corporate relocation process to the area, one of the first things they will do is Google / Bing / Yahoo, “Best Places to Live in Memphis.” Collierville jumps to the top of many if not all “Best of” lists. Collierville is highly ranked in a variety of categories, to include best schools, lowest crime, best town for families, best place for young professionals (YES! Look it up...), best parks system, tops in housing appreciation value, and so on. Collierville is proud to welcome many from outside the area who have done extensive research to determine Collierville is the right place to relocate their family.

MEEMAW AND PAWPAW One of the most interesting components of our survey was the number of respondents, ages 60+, that said their primary reason for moving to Collierville was, “to be closer

to family and grandchildren.” By 2023, it is projected that 25% of our population, or about 14,000+/- people, will fall in the 55 - 74 year old age bracket. So, is Collierville in certain respects, a retirement community without the beach? You can certainly make the case that our central location, moderate climate, access to health care, parks & trails, upscale amenities, golf, safety & security, and proximity to grand babies makes our community attractive to the aging Baby Boomer.

OUR NEXT CHAPTER From 2013 through 2017, Collierville welcomed over 1500 Millennials, primarily those that were newly married or couples with young children. As has been previously reported, many Millennial families desire the same things they grew up with, ie: the safe neighborhoods, excellent schools, open space, access to amenities, and a sense of community. This trend is projected to continue through 2022. We have also discovered that families from Cordova, Bartlett, Germantown, and the other surrounding areas have moved to Town for a bigger or

newer home and access to our award winning school system. As many of our empty nest citizens approach their mid-late 50’s and early 60’s, some are making the decision to remain in Town, where they can continue to enjoy their friends, neighborhood, church, clubs, amenities, and lifestyle they have become accustomed to... some call it, “aging in place.” Be it a job, or proximity to a job... a highly researched corporate relocation decision... nearness to family... or, that next chapter of life, there are a variety of reasons why people choose Collierville.

DEGREE A last-dollar scholarship program is gaining momentum in our community and is a win-win for Tennessee taxpayers and students. The statewide scholarship program, Tennessee Reconnect, is transforming the lives of adult students without an Associate or Bachelor’s degree that are eager to return to higher education to gain new skills, advance in the workplace, and fulfill their life-long dreams of completing a degree or credential tuition-

According to former Governor Bill Haslam’s Drive to 55 Alliance Campaign, at least half the jobs in Tennessee will require postsecondary education by 2025. free. Tennessee is the first state in the nation to offer tuition-free community or technical college to adults. According to former Governor Bill Haslam’s Drive to 55 Alliance Campaign, at least half the jobs in Tennessee will require postsecondary education by 2025. For ‘Tennessee Reconnectors’ like Carol Madison, Tennessee Reconnect was the opportunity she needed to advance in the workplace as a billing clerk in her company’s legal department. “I had to obtain a degree 48

to advance in my career,” said Madison. “My company did support me financially through a tuition reimbursement program, but I could not wait for reimbursement at the end of each semester.” Tennessee Reconnect changed that waiting period giving Madison the financial stability upfront to continue her studies at Southwest Tennessee Community College, helping Madison pursue an Associate of Science in Paralegal Studies. Celeste Riley’s story is all too familiar to adult learners with family responsibilities. After raising seven children, Riley went back to work for a job with little compensation. “I worked my tail off and only got a ten cents raise,” said Riley. After 22 years away from school, Riley enrolled and applied for Tennessee Reconnect. “I was running out of funds and would not have been able to complete my education without Tennessee Reconnect.” Applying for the program enabled Riley to graduate in spring with an Associate of Applied Science in English as a Second Language and will transfer in fall to the U of M to obtain a Bachelor’s degree and plans to earn a doctorate. Since February 2018, nearly 15,000 adults statewide have enrolled in Tennessee Reconnect. For the 2018-2019 academic

year, Southwest enrolled 1,548 Tennessee Reconnect students for fall semester and 1,416 students for spring semester. Tennessee Reconnect numbers indicate the success of the adult program in removing financial barriers for returning students and making college more accessible. It’s given Tennesseans like Madison and Riley a chance to better their lives and their families. It’s given Tennessee the opportunity to invest in a workforce that will benefit its economic future.

REALTOR TIPS SCHOOL DRIVES THE “SELLING SEASON”

The lazy days of summer are over and it’s back to the hustle and bustle of schedules, homework, practices, games, and all that comes along with the school year. How does this affect the real estate market in Collierville? Typically, May through August is what we call the “selling season.” Last year, 43% of the homes sold in Collierville were sold during this time. In contrast, 31% were sold September through December, with the remaining 26% being sold January through April. Looking at these numbers, it is obvious that May through August is a great time to sell a home. However, it also means more competition for both buyers and sellers. As fall approaches, you can take advantage of fewer homes being on the market. If your home is updated and shows well, it will stand out among less inventory. If your home lacks the updates, you will need to counter this with a lower price, offering up a great opportunity for buyers since fewer people will be competing for homes. For those living in Collierville, there’s a good chance you moved here for the schools. Excellent schools have been the driving force behind our real estate market since my father opened John Green and Company Realtors® on the Town Square 40 years ago. The real estate market has

always been cyclical, as the anticipation of school starting in August drives the summer selling season. Our first-rate schools have meant strong growth for the Town of Collierville, and above average appreciation for its homeowners. Although some people are concerned about the taxes they pay in Collierville, our taxes are actually lower than most of our municipal neighbors. I think one thing people forget to consider is that buyers will often pay more to live in an area with good schools. The National Association of REALTORS® conducted a survey, and found that buyers were willing to pay 10% more to live in an area with desirable schools vs. an area that was not in a desirable school district. For instance, an average priced home in Collierville sells around $380,000 right now. This means, on average, Collierville buyers are willing to pay $38,000 more for their Collierville home. If you consider the Collierville

taxes on a home assessed at $380,000 are only $1,739 a year, you are way ahead of the game owning a home in Collierville. One of the main reasons we have award-winning schools in Collierville is involvement from the community as a whole. From our Mayor and Board, School Board, Town Administration, PTA, and nonprofits, we have a 100% buy-in from our Town. This helps make Collierville the greatest place to call home! The bottom line is we are blessed to live in a Town like Collierville that supports its schools. This has driven, and will continue to drive our Real Estate Market. If you are looking for a way to support our schools, consider donating to the CEF (Collierville Education Foundation). Since 1997, they have given over 1.2 million dollars in small grants directly to teachers.

STEP 1 Cut parts (A) and (B) to size (see diagrams for measurements). Then, to make the frame, arrange parts (A) and (B) on your work surface in a rectangle, making sure the edges are flush. Use two 2” wood screws at each corner to attach the boards together.

STEP 2 Now we’re ready for the legs (C). At the bottom of part (C), make a line at a 29 degree angle from one of the corners. Cut along this line with your chop saw. At the top of part (C), mark a point that is 1¾” from the top and 1¾” from the edges, to make a center for your circle. Now, using a compass, draw a semi circle with a 1¾” radius to create your circle. Finally, using a 3/8” drill bit, make a hole in the center of your circle.

STEP 3 On the outside of part (A), use a pencil to mark a point 4” from the left edge and 1¾” from the top edge. Using your 3/8” drill bit you used before, go ahead and make a hole in part (A) at your mark. Now, you can connect your leg (part C) to the inside of your frame, using a 3/8” carriage bolt (hammer needed). Install the washer and wingnut to secure the leg, then repeat Step 3 to connect the second leg to the frame.

STEP 4 On part (E), mark a point 12” from the left and right edges, and 9” from the top edge. Using a compass, draw a circle around your mark that has a 3” radius. Drill a hole in the center of the circle with the 3/8” drill bit.

STEP 5 Insert jigsaw blade into the center hole and cut out the rest of your circle. Now you’re ready to place part (E) on the frame, while making sure edges are flush. Attach part (E) to the frame at each of the four corners using 1¾” wood screws. For reinforcement, place screws at 12” intervals down the sides of the board. The hard work is finished! We’ll leave any finishing/painting up to you. Don’t forget about the throw bags! sep temb er/o c to b er 201 9
