IT’S ALL HERE TOUR HUMBOLDT MAGAZINE Tour Humboldt is an adventure lifestyle magazine focused on life on the Humboldt Bay. Tour Humboldt features the very best our region has to offer- our favorite local products, lodging, shops, and tours. The magazine is an in-house publication of the Humboldt Bay Tourism and Taste. We publish Tour Humboldt twice annually, in both print and online editions. Feel free to read through Tour Humboldt while you're visiting Taste and the Tourism Center, or ask your server for a take-home copy for purchase. We love where we live, and we'd love to show you around.
HUMBOLDT BAY TOURISM CENTER Humboldt Bay Tourism Center was founded in 2013 as an innovative approach to visitor services in Humboldt County. Our goal is to connect tourists and locals with the very best our region has to offer. The Center offers a curated selection of area tours and adventures- from river rafting to horse-drawn carriage rides to oyster farm tours. Visitors can also virtually explore the region on our iPads- all custom-loaded with apps and links to local lodging, dining, and activity options.
Humboldt Bay Tourism Center features a curated collection of local tours and activities designed to help you choose your own adventure on the Redwood Coast. Whether it’s a romantic kayak paddle at sunset, a tour of one of local craft businesses, or an intense surf session, we strive to offer tours that suit every visitor’s tastes. If you’re local, think of us as you plan itineraries for your out-of-town guests. We’re happy to help you. If you have questions about the tours listed on our website, ask our friendly staff for more details.
MEET THE MAKER
Every Sunday from 6-9, Humboldt Bay Tourism Center hosts local makers - artists, chefs, farmers, adventurers, brewers- to share their craft with visitors and locals. We’ve had wine and cheese pairings narrated by local vintners, a woodworking class by a local artisan, a sampling of gourmet hot chocolate from local chocolate makers, and slideshows from local rafting guides. Meet the creatives who make life in Humboldt interesting! If you are a local Maker or have a small business you would like to share with our community, please contact Humboldt Bay Tourism Center about hosting a Meet the Maker of your own at help@hbtc.info. We’ll help you plan and promote your MTM, including a promotional spot on 95.5 The Bay.
TASTE The cornerstone of Humboldt Bay Tourism Center is Taste, our all-local tasting room. We pour local beers, wines, ciders, and kombucha by the glass, the bottle or tasting flight. Our trained staff recommend and serve cheeses, meats, breads, and desserts that are all hand-crafted locally. Our oyster bar, under the supervision of oyster farmer Captain Sebastian, serves raw and broiled oysters with a variety of gourmet sauces. He’s behind the bar every Tuesday after 5pm. Come see him!

The infamous Dutch Savage
Tall Trees, Larger Laughs: Humboldt’s Comedy Scene By Sam Greenspan Humboldt County is famous for its natural beauty, local agriculture, and active community. When visitors arrive in our sparsely populated corner of the world, we also try to surprise them with our vibrant, varied nightlife. Our clubs, auditoriums, and campuses attract world-famous music and theatrical acts from all over the world, and rarely will anyone be bereft of a good evening’s entertainment if they’re willing to step outside their comfort zone. A cornerstone of that nightlife is a live comedy scene that touring comedians have described as “one of the most supportive, energetic, and giving audiences” they’ve had the pleasure to perform in front of. Talented and hardworking comedians perform almost nightly to provide residents and tourists with

(almost entirely) free entertainment. Chris Durant and Josh Duke, founders of local comedy magazine Savage Henry Independent Times, have fostered a community of comedians that are always inventing and perfecting their craft. Touring acts have included legendary comedians such as Tom Rhodes and it’s not unheard of to have surprise guests pop in out for a quick set. The annual grab bag of comedic performances that is the Savage Henry Comedy Festival takes place this year from September 1-3. During the festival, Humboldt Bay becomes a beehive of comedic talent where attendees can catch a casual show at a local coffeeshop and then take in a larger act in the historic Arcata Theatre.
For those passing through or looking for a night out, there are several reliable open mic comedy venues which feature dozens of local comedians trying out their material or perfecting their ace jokes. For more information on comedy shows coming to Humboldt Bay, visit www.savagehenrymagazine.com

Best Workplaces around the Bay
Best Playgrounds around the Bay
The North Coast is the perfect place to unplug and unwind. Things move at a slower pace around here. The rugged, natural beauty of the area beckons your attention up and away from screens and stress. There’s not great reception in the redwood canopy anyway. If your goal while visiting is to leave your everyday life behind you, Humboldt is the perfect place to hide. But when you can’t quite leave the job AT the job, we’ve still got you covered. Here a few great spots around the Bay to get some work done. They’ve got free wifi, comfortable seating with a view, locally-made treats and nice vibes.
The North Coast is a natural playground. Our beaches, forests, and mountains invite children of all ages to run wild and explore. For the days that you’re not up for a big adventure, shoot for a small one at a local park. We’ve got some pretty neat traditional playgrounds. Whether you’re raising kids here or just looking to blow off some steam during your visit, here’s some spots to climb, run, and jump.
Beachcomber Cafe - Bayside 1602 Old Arcata Rd., Arcata
This sun-soaked spot serves up some of the best breakfast in town and is just far enough off the beaten path. You won’t bump elbows or fight for outlets, but you will see lots of Arcata residents coming, going and staying to sip their coffee. The Beachcomber’s bulletin board is a great resource for local events and information and the patio offers peekaboo views of the Bay. The coffee is delicious, but if you want to take it “to g”o, make sure to bring your own mug (no paper cups, obviously).
Taste at Humboldt Bay Tourism Center 205 G St., Eureka
Dude, you’re already here! Taste is open from 12-9 every single day. Spend your morning hiking in the forest or paddling on the Bay, then charge up your laptop at one of our redwood tables. Oysters and craft beer are the perfect pairing to your remote work afternoon session. And if you throw in a social media check-in, you can get a free oyster on us! See your bartender for details. We also strongly recommend taking a sun break in our sea-worthy parklet. It’ll improve your work product, we promise.
Black Lightning Motorcycle Cafe 440 F St., Eureka
If you’re a gearhead, this shop/cafe on the edge of Old Town Eureka will make your head spin. Its got a beautifully curated selection of high quality riding gear and apparel (the baby-soft hoodies and tees from Hinterland Empire make the perfect souvenir), delicious panini and ever-flowing espresso. They’re open late and frequently screen motorcyle-themed films, making this spot a great “away from home” office and hangout. Insider tip: Ask the knowledgeable staff for recommendation for area rides- they’re great routes for 4-wheeled vehicles too!
Janes Creek Meadows Park AKA "Spinny" Park 950 Villa Way, Arcata
This high-tech playground is tucked into sweet little subdivision in Arcata, but families seek it out every day for its climbing structures, swings, and grassy lawn, and “spinnys”. What’s a spinny? A lopsided, individually-sized merry-go-round designed to maximize giggles and nausea in small children. They’re an acquired taste, but addictive. The quiet, low traffic area makes the park the perfect spot to let children run wild. There’s even a short loop trail that runs through the playground if you want to poke around the neighborhood.
Sequoia Park
3414 W Street Eureka This park is beautifully scaled for small children. Its lower level (access from T St.) features a duck pond, the short Sequoia Creek trail, a toddler-size playground and creeks that are perfect for tromping through. The upper level (accessible from W Street or on the park road from the lower level) has the largest playground in Eureka, including some old-school steep metal slides sure to delight children and terrify parents. Pick up a pizza at Babe’s (4015 Walnut Dr, Eureka, CA 95503) and have an easy-peasy picnic with the family.
Manila Bay Community Park
Peninsula Drive and Lupine Manila, CA 95521 When you want a break from the beach, the only playground on the Samoa Peninsula sports a large, modern play structure with slides, swings, and climbing obstacles. It’s pretty tall, so smaller kids will need supervision. Steps from the play structure is a short boardwalk trail that loops through the wetlands. Pack rain boots and let them kids explore the park’s mudflats- it’s a like a walk on the moon, but with tidepools and bird-watching. A word on etiquette: These spots are happy to host remote workers. Please be gracious with that hospitality. Buy things (more than just one cup of coffee if you plan to stay all day). Check in with staff regularly to make sure you haven’t overstayed your welcome. Clear out if the place gets packed. Tip well.

Humboldt's Marine protected areas By Delia Bense-Kang
O
verwhelmed by all the California coastal destinations to explore? Narrow down your options by visiting the state’s 124 marine protected areas! In 2012, California completed the United State’s first network of marine protected areas (MPAs), becoming an international leader in ocean conservation. These MPAs conserve and restore wildlife and habitats in our ocean, just as national and state parks do on land. And just as you visit parks on land, MPAs are open to public enjoyment. Here in Humboldt we have ten MPAs, providing a range of coastal habitats from kelp forests to coastal wetlands, and rocky reefs to sandy ocean floors. It is not only allowed, but encouraged to get out and enjoy these areas. Whether it be swimming, diving, surfing, kayaking, bird watching, or simply relaxing in nature, there is the MPA for you! Just make sure you take proper precautions and know the rules before you go. Here’s a snapshot of the South Humboldt Bay State Marine Recreational Management Area, and a quick guide to five of our Humboldt County MPAs.

TOUR HUMBOLDT 2016
South Humboldt Bay State Marine Recreational Management Area
Why go? The birds-eye view of Humboldt Bay from Table Bluff may be the best part of visiting this MPA. On a clear day you can see Arcata and even Trinidad in the background. You will get the best of both worlds as the calm estuary is on one side of the South spit and the ocean is on the other. Nearby Hookton Slough offers boat launch access for kayaking and paddle boarding. Gaze at the meadows of eelgrass and maybe catch a glimpse of a fish or crab that calls this area home.
About the MPA:
Characterized by intertidal mudflats and eelgrass (Zostera marina) beds, the South Humboldt Bay SMRMA is one of the most unique of Humboldt’s MPAs. Humboldt Bay is California’s second largest estuary and holds about 40 percent of the state’s

eelgrass. Eelgrass is beneficial to humans and wildlife - it cushions shorelines from wave energy, breaks down pollutants, and is highly effective in carbon sequestration. It also provides critical habitat for seabirds, waterfowl, fish, and and many marine mammals. The SMRMA is an important nursery for marine and estuary fishes, including halibut, salmon, stag horn sculpin, surf perch, leopard sharks and rays, as they use this habitat for foraging, breeding, or traveling between freshwater spawning grounds and the sea. Millions of migratory birds rely on this area along the Pacific Flyway and more than 200 bird species, including 80 kinds of water birds and four endangered species, regularly feed, rest, or nest on the refuge or other areas around the bay.
Access:
Take highway 101 about 20 minutes south from Eureka, to the Hookton Road
exit. This country road will switch back and forth through the trees until letting you out at the top of Table Bluff where you will have the best view of the MPA and the greater Humboldt Bay. Here Hookton Rd. turns into Table Bluff Road. At the edge of the cliff Table Bluff Road then turns into the South Jetty Road. Follow this down the hill to the South Spit.
Know before you go:
Check the tides! Low tide is the best time to view the eel grass. If you are kayaking or SUPing make sure you go at a higher tide or you will be stuck in the mud! Dress in layers, bring plenty of snacks and water.

HIKING & BIKING THE LOST COAST The North Coast boasts some of the most gorgeous hiking and biking trails in the country, all within a short drive from HBTC. You won’t battle crowds on the trail or fight for parking. You will see some enchanted forests and epic seascapes. We recommend the ones below, rain or shine! By Amy Cirincione O’Connor
SEQUOIA PARK Run, walk or bike the short trails through 67 acres of redwood forest, meadows, and creeks. There’s even some old growth stands in there. The park’s duck pond, playgrounds, picnic tables, and zoo make it the place to spend the day with little ones (and bigger ones, too).
ARCATA COMMUNITY FOREST
OUR FLOWERS MAKE HUMBOLDT BLOOM.
Explore 2,350 acres of second growth redwood forest on the east side of Arcata. The Nature Loop is only .55 miles long, but can be linked to other trails for a longer day hike. By itself, the Nature Loop circles the lower levels of the forest. It’s easy and it’s magical.
FERN CANYON Wade through the creek and over footbridges through this verdant fern-lined canyon. This can be done as an easy, 1 mile out-and-back hike. It can also be linked with the John Irvine and Miner’s Ridge trails (our personal favorite at HBTC) for a full-day of redwoods, ferns, creeks, and beaches. Bonus points for elk sightings. No matter where your explorations bring you in Humboldt this spring, True Humboldt will open your eyes to the beauty. We’re an ag-style co-op of growers who’ve stayed true to the outdoor growing methods of the first local sun growers. Visit truehumboldt.com to learn more.
BIKE PARADISE ROYALE You’ve got to drive “a bit of a ways” for this one, but it’s worth it. And by “worth it” we mean once-in-a-lifetime single track rides. The entire trail system consists of over 25 miles of mountain bike trails, and the 12.1 miles Paradise Royal Loop is the highlight. A demanding climb is balanced by flowy descents, all in the ruggedly beautiful Lost Coast.
BIKE HAMMOND TRAIL Since the beginning.
