HUMBOLDT COUNTY
Welcome to Humboldt County, a wild and scenic place that offers equal parts adventure, culture, and relaxation. Home to the last 1% of old growth redwoods (sequoia sempervirens), we take great pride in our redwood trees and our surf breaks. We enjoy good meals, craft cocktails and fine art. Whether you’re new to town, entertaining guests, or just passing through, welcome to the Redwood Coast. Drive everywhere — very slowly. Take pictures of every Victorian building and tall tree you see. We hope you appreciate our slower pace of life and take time to explore life around the Redwood Coast.
LODGING, DINING & ATTRACTIONS
The Redwood Coast offers a wide variety of unique lodging accommodations from the northern entry to the Avenue of the Giants, all the way to Trinidad. Our favorites are comfortable, well designed and authentic to Humboldt County. Whether you're looking for an historic boutique hotel, a Victorian bed & breakfast, or a family-friendly vacation rental, we have it! Great meals can be found in Old Town Eureka, On the Samoa peninsula, in Arcata, on the water in Trinidad. We also have a farmers’ market on Saturdays at the Arcata Plaza, Thursdays at Henderson Center in Eureka, and Tuesdays in Old Town Eureka. In Eureka, enjoy Arts Alive the 1st Saturday of every month or the Friday Night Market June through October.
OUTDOORS
This edition features a few of our favorite activities and adventures to enhance your journey. Take a romantic kayak on the bay, tour local craft businesses, surf an empty break, hike all 5 Redwood State and National Parks, watch the sunset on the boardwalk in Eureka, witness the rugged lost coast or lose yourself to solace on a scenic redwood drive. If you’re local, think this guide as you plan itineraries for your out-of-town guests.
SHOPPING
Humboldt Bay is a mecca for craft business. Here you'll find designers, chefs, farmers, adventurers, brewers and shopkeepers who are eager to share their craft with visitors. Shops and galleries line the picturesque streets of Old Town Eureka, Henderson Center, downtown Fortuna, and Arcata, each filled with unique gifts that tell a story.
ARTS
Humboldt is a community of fishermen, loggers, and farmers who have worked our lands and waters for generations. We’re a community of artists and artisans whose work keeps things new and exciting on the North Coast. There are dozens of galleries and studios in the region that allow visitors.
Ketamine-assisted Wellness:
THE CENTER FOR NEW GROWTH PARTNERS WITH HUMBOLDT SOCIAL
Humboldt Social, a California hospitality and wellness group, and The Center for New Growth, Humboldt County’s first ketamine and integrative mental health practice, have launched a new, immersive ketamine-assisted therapy retreat. The four-day experience, which is hosted at Humboldt Social’s Scotia Lodge, takes The Center’s depth-oriented model of psychedelic-assisted therapy into a boutique hotel setting to allow people to experience accelerated benefits.
“We are truly honored to launch this new venture with Humboldt Social,” said Carrie Griffin, Physician, Trauma Therapist and Founder of The Center for New Growth. “Our patients have experienced profound results with this treatment in a medical setting,
and Humboldt Social’s focus on creating warm, welcoming spaces for guests makes them the ideal partner for this one-ofkind experience that has the ability to change lives.”
After initially being created as an anesthetic, ketamine has been used as an off-label treatment for mental health conditions since the early 2000s. Evidence that it provides relief for people for whom traditional treatments have failed continues to grow, including a recent study of over 1,800 patients who received ketamine-assisted psychotherapy between 2020 and 2022 and showed sustained relief from the effects of depression, anxiety and trauma for up to six months after treatment.
“We want this to be an immersive and transformative experience, so we’re going one step further and are incorporating things like massage therapy and tub soaks to The Center’s therapeutic sessions,” said Nicole Fryer, co-founder of Humboldt Social, certified holistic health coach and massage therapist. “Body work can release past trauma, feelings and memories that guests sometimes don’t understand how to work through. Partnering with The Center to meet these needs is a dream come true and something that we think will have a lasting impact for retreat goers.”
The Center’s retreats include a medical clearance examination (either in-person or via telehealth) and a group session with retreat participants prior to arrival. During the four day retreat, participants take part in an opening ceremony, two ketamineassisted sessions, and a final day of reflection and closure. The historic setting of Scotia Lodge, paired with the natural grandeur of Humboldt’s redwood forests, offer participants the chance to undergo their inner process against a backdrop of stillness and beauty. Throughout the retreat, guests enjoy specially prepared nourishing meals, herbal beverages, bodywork, and soaking tubs.
“We are so excited to introduce Humboldt County to the world as a medical tourism destination. Addressing trauma and depression through innovative treatments like ketamine-assisted therapy is critical in addressing the current mental health crisis,” said Kim Bergel, City of Eureka Mayor. “Dr. Carrie Griffin is one of Eureka’s treasured medical professionals contributing positively to our vibrant city and county.”
To allow greater access to psychedelic-assisted therapy, The Center for New Growth offers ongoing pro bono treatments, uses sliding scale fees with treatments at times as low as $350 for ketamine sessions, and has become a contracted partner with California Humboldt County Veteran Affairs.
ABOUT CENTER FOR NEW GROWTH AND CARRIE GRIFFIN DO
The Center for New Growth opened in the summer of 2022 when Carrie Griffin DO, a family and addiction medicine physician who had been using ketamine assisted psychotherapy as part of her practice since April of 2021, expanded her team to include three psychotherapists, a nurse and a nurse practitioner. Since Dr. Griffin and the Center’s opening, they have supported hundreds of patients through ketamine assisted transformation.
The Center is dedicated to the following aim: transforming trauma and suffering into wholeness. They define wholeness as a state of being complete in and of oneself, the experience of the totality of one’s self and union of one’s multidimensional parts and experiences.
For more information on The Center for New Growth, or to make a retreat reservation, please visit the Scotia Lodge website or The Center for New Growth website. Interested participants may also email support@humboldtcenterfornewgrowth.com or call 707-267-7931.
Humboldt bay social club
HUMBOLDT BAY SOCIAL CLUB A LOCAL DESTINATION
Humboldt Bay Social Club is a rustic-chic boutique hotel with a welcoming bar, casual dining, unique bayside vacation homes and event space located on the rugged Samoa Peninsula of Humboldt Bay.
A classic meeting place among locals, the Social Club is situated on Samoa Field, a working airstrip on the historic grounds of a WWII blimp base. Across the road is Oyster Beach with 4 unique vacation homes right on the bay.
Our Lobby Bar offers a unique indoor/outdoor drinking and dining experience with a cozy, styling lounge and a large outdoor area with charcoal grills, firepits, cornhole and ample seating. The Social Club is family and dog friendly, serving a limited and locally sourced menu.
The bar's speciality is simple cocktails and freshly harvested oysters that guests can grill themselves or to take home for later. The Social Club has a variety of event spaces including an expansive airplane hangar and Clubhouse that hosts private events, weddings, baby showers and birthday parties throughout the year.
The Jetty offers casual dining serving Coastal Comfort food in the Clubhouse at Humboldt Bay Social Club. The menu features panini, salads, and bowls. There are vegan and gluten free options, as well as child-sized portions.
Humboldt Bay Social Club offers four sought after boutique hotel style rooms on the tip of the Samoa Peninsula in California’s Redwood Coast. Each accommodation offers unique features and character. Many guests from all over the world stay year after year and have experienced all four accommodations.
The property boasts over 200 acres of dunes, beach, and eucalyptus forest, a working airstrip for guests to fly-in on their private planes, a Lobby Bar that is open to the public, grilling and picnic areas, and a WWII era airplane Hangar for guests to enjoy or for hosting private events.
OYSTER BEACH
OYSTER BEACH is situated on 22 acres of bayfront property in a eucalyptus grove. Each of the four vacation home offers its own character and features. The property includes a private beach, a bathhouse, walking paths, outdoor BBQs and firepits. It is a place to create memories that last a lifetime.
THE HANGAR
THE HANGAR is the Social Club's most popular venue. It is 2,500 square feet, hosts up to 150 people, and is furnished just enough to allow guests the flexibility to create their own indoor/outdoor event space. The Hangar is just that, a former WWII airplane Hangar with soaring ceilings, sliding doors, a concrete floor and exposed beams.
LOBBY BAR
THE LOBBY BAR is open to the public daily for food and drink service. The Lobby Bar accepts large group reservations during open hours and is available as an event venue for casual gatherings. The Lobby Bar is comfortably and stylishly furnished and child-friendly.
THE CLUBHOUSE
THE CLUBHOUSE is a cozy, photogenic space for intimate events. It is ideal for smaller gatherings such as baby showers, parties, and professional meetings. Inside, a vintage Aristocrat trailer has been repurposed as seating.
EVENTS & WEDDINGS
The Social Club is the ideal location for casual, DIY events, including weddings, class reunions, graduation parties, birthdays, and professional mixers. The Social Club is an inviting space for families of all kinds, dogs, kids, and your out-of-town guests.
Spring in Humboldt
Early Spring on Humboldt Bay is still misty and cool, a perfect time to explore its diverse ecosystems. Humboats offers kayak, standup paddleboard and canoe rentals all year round, by appointment. We highly recommend taking a guided tour with Brian, the owner. Explore the coastline of Tuluwat Island (a site of sacred and historical significance to the Wiyot People) and the water trails of the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife refuge. Get on eye level with seals, sea lions and marine birds like loons, cormorants, grebes, pelicans, and ospreys
In April, Arcata hosts Godwit Days Spring Migration Bird Festival to celebrate the peak of spring migration on the Redwood Coast. The Festival includes lectures and exhibits hosted in and around Arcata’s Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary , as well as guided tours and trips to local bird watching spots. The festival is a beautiful way to immerse yourself in local community culture and nature.
On Memorial Day Weekend, the Kinetic Grand Championship takes over the Redwood Coast with “The Triathalon of the Art World.” Spectators can watch the race of moving art vehicles begin in the Arcata Plaza and then follow the route along (and through) Humboldt Bay over the entire weekend. Want to feel like a participant? Grab a bike from an Arcata Bike Share kiosk and follow along on 2 wheels.
While in Arcata, take some time to explore the Creamery District , a vibrant, eclectic art and commerce community centered around the historic Creamery Building. The ramshackle building itself is a local landmark, with its 80 foot high tower (now a vacation rental and studio space), roof decks, and enormous multi-paned windows. Fun, inspiring shopping is tucked into the nooks and crannies of the District, including vintage clothing at Bang Bang Vintage , locally made art clothing at Seapod and handcrafted and antique furniture at the Back Porch . For eats and drinks, you can’t go wrong with the Pub at the Creamery District and Familia Cafe
The Avenue of the Giants has easy access to trails and trees, but it’s also chock full of kitschy “road trip” culture. While away the day visiting trinket shops, penny-crushing machines, drivethru trees, and cafes. One Log House is a fascinating example of the contrast between Humboldt’s past and present- a tourist trap since 1946, this house carved from a single felled redwood in 1946 is now a dispensary and espresso bar. Flood Plain Produce in Pepperwood offers delicious local fruits and veggies and delightful, homemade blackberry popsicles.

Biking HUMBOLDT
Every year, thousands of bikers ride through the North Coast, exploring our backroads and trails. Whether you’re a mountain biker, road rider, or just looking for an easy family ride, we’ve got you covered.
PARADISE ROYALE
You’ve got to drive “a bit of a ways” for this one, but it’s worth it. And by “worth it” we mean once-in-a-lifetime single track rides. The entire trail system consists of over 25 miles of mountain bike trails, and the 12.1 miles Paradise Royal Loop is the highlight. A demanding climb is balanced by flowy descents, all in the ruggedly beautiful Lost Coast. We recommend riding the loop in a clockwise direction so you can enjoy the east side’s long descent.
HUMBOLDT BAY TRAIL
The Humboldt Bay Trail system will eventually connect the Elk River to southern Arcata. Today, you can hike or bike from the south at the Hikshari’ trailhead along the Eureka waterfront all the way to Old Town and the Boardwalk. The wide, paved trail highlights the natural beauty of the Bay and brings you up-close and personal to Eureka’s complex identity as both an industrial waterfront and a preserved Victorian seaport. Alternatively, you can begin at the North side and ride through Arcata’s Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary before heading South along the Bay.
HAMMOND TRAIL
A family-friendly ride on a paved trail that hugs the Pacific coastline north of Arcata. Start at Mad River Bridge and coast past pastures, neighborhoods, beaches, coastal forest. This 11-mile round trip ride is as pretty as it is accessible. Looking for a shorter route with no hills? Start at Hiller Park (park by the playground) and turn around at the overlook before the descent down to Clam Beach.
LOOK PRAIRIE THORNTON LOOP (MULTI-USE TRAIL)
This 13 mile loop in Humboldt Redwoods State Park is open to mountain bikes, a rarity in the redwoods. It starts with a steep climb out of Albee Creek Campground, and then treats you to magnificent views of redwood-covered mountains, meadows, and shady woodland.

Summer in Humboldt
Summer is the peak of Humboldt’s tourist season, when the days are long and sun-soaked. Many summer visitors to our redwoods only view the trees through their windshields. We recommend that you actually leave the road and get up close and personal with our towering tree buddies and a slice of local life.
Want more tastes of Humboldt local culture? Summer is rodeo season in Central and Southern Humboldt. Fortuna, Ferndale and Garberville’s rodeos include carnival rides, bucking bulls and broncos, tractor pulls, classic car shows, and some of the best BBQ the region has to offer. Saddle up!
Every summer, artists descend on Eureka for the annual Street Art Festival . Local business, city officials, and business owners collaborate to sponsor the painting of murals throughout the city. The Festival offers daily tours of the murals in progress and culminates in an all-day Block Party filled with art, music, food and more art. It’s a magical experience, to see the city become more beautiful before your eyes.
Take a cruise, Humboldt style, with the Madaket , our local ferry that takes locals and visitors on daily tours through the Bay. The ship (built in 1910) is the last of the original seven that served our bay. Depending on the time of day, the Madaket’s cruises focus on local history, wildlife, or serve cocktails (the ship DOES host the smallest bar in the state). We especially love the Sunday morning birdwatching cruise.
Arcata boasts the local favorite summer baseball team, the Humboldt Crabs . The team is comprised of college baseball players on summer break. The atmosphere at the Arcata Ball Park is eclectic. Be sure to catch a game with the Crab Grass Band , a group of local musicians playing your favorite tunes with unmatched enthusiasm. Try your favorite local beer, cider, or wine in the beer garden or in Can Alley.
Summer would not be complete without a good ol' fashioned swimming hole. Our coastal favorite is Big Lagoon , just north of Trinidad. The lagoon is separated from the ocean by a narrow strip of beach and the water temperature ranges from chilly to pleasant. This is a perfect spot for swimming, kayaking and stand up paddle boarding. Farther south, multiple swimming holes can be found along the Avenue of the Giants . A local favorite is Dyerville Bar, accessed by a gravel road and reliably sun-soaked (four wheel drive recommended).
EAT & DRINK SOCIAL
HUMBOLDT BAY SOCIAL CLUB’S LOBBY BAR
The Lobby Bar serves coastal comfort food, fresh Humboldt Bay oysters by the bucket, beer, wine, cider and cocktails, picnic meals, and grilling supplies. Guests are welcome to use the outdoor picnic area to grill oysters, burgers, and vegan sausages. Guests can play cornhole or just relax in Adirondack chairs around the fire. The Lobby Bar specializes in simple cocktails made from local spirits. The Lobby Bar is open to the public every day.
HUMBOLDT BAY SOCIAL CLUB’S JETTY CAFE
Tucked inside the Clubhouse at the Social Club, The Jetty offers a unique take on Coastal Comfort Food serving panini sandwiches, bowls and salads. Enjoy casual dining, local wine, beer and spirits in a stylish and welcoming indoor and outdoor atmosphere.
WONDER BAR AT SCOTIA LODGE
The Wonder Bar is Scotia Lodge’s speakeasy, tucked away on the lower level. Wonder Bar offers craft cocktails and mocktails in an Art Deco-styled lounge. Guests and locals gather here for conversation, entertainment and mixology without pretense in a unique and fun setting.
LOBBY CAFE AT SCOTIA LODGE
The Lobby Cafe and Bar welcomes guests with hot and cold beverages, libations, locally sourced picnic items, and deli-style snacks. The menu reflects our favorite tastes of Humboldt with a twist of Spanish flavors.
SIX RIVERS BREWERY
In nearby McKinlevyille, Six Rivers Brewery serves American eats, house-brewed craft beer, and full bar featuring craft cocktails with locally-made spirits in a lively environment. Enjoy outdoor seating, regular live music and the pet-friendly patio. Find out why locals call it the "Brew with a View."
HIKING HUMBOLDT
Humboldt Bay is the eco-tourist destination of a lifetime. Our North Coast boasts some of the most gorgeous trails in the country, and we’re off the beaten trail enough that you won’t battle crowds on the trail or fight for parking. Our favorite hikes take you through old-growth redwood forests, fern canyons, and desolate beaches.
Homestead and Big Tree Loop in Humboldt Redwoods State Park right off the Avenue of the Giants delivers maximum bang for minimum hiking buck. The Big Tree Trail, as its name suggests, leads hikers through a grand, dense old growth grove along the creek. It crosses Mattole Road and follows the creek to Albee Creek Campground (If you’d like to stay the night, we recommend site #25). Take the lush, quiet Homestead Trail back to the Big Tree area to complete the 2.4 mile loop.
Fern Canyon
Wade through the creek and over footbridges through this verdant fern-lined canyon. This can be done as an easy, 1 mile out-and-back hike, but you’ll need to make a reservation
first with the Redwood Park Conservancy during the summer. Alternatively, you can hike to Fern Canyon via the John Irvine and Miner’s Ridge trails (our personal favorite) for a full-day of redwoods, ferns, creeks, and beaches. Bonus points for elk sightings.
Elk River Trail in Headwaters Forest Reserve
The 5 mile hike is a popular destination, but the majority of its users only enjoy part of the trail. The first mile is level and paved, making it easily accessible to bikers, skaters, and children. The next two miles are unpaved and have a very small elevation gain. You can stick to these first sections of trail and have an easy, breezy day along the South Fork of the Eel River.
Or you can ante up and commit to the full 11 mile loop. After leaving those tricycles and dog-walkers behind, you’ll be enveloped by the cool quiet of the forest’s canopy. After a short, steep climb, you enter a loop trail through a beautiful old growth grove, and you’ll feel the redwood magic.

Fall in Humboldt
Early Fall in Humboldt brings some of our sunniest weather. This is the perfect time to explore our coastal sand dunes. Samoa Dunes Recreation Area is a 300 acre park that draws a devoted following of ATVers and surfers, but isn’t appreciated enough for its hiking and tide pools. If you’re a surfer, join dawn patrol at the North Jetty. You can rent all the gear you need at Pacific Outfitters in Eureka, bring your own, or just enjoy the sunrise from the bayside.
Walking the North Jetty is more of a rock scramble, as decades of high surf have eroded the masonry. You’re likely to see seals and porpoises, and maybe even a shark. Please only explore the Jetty at low tide and keep your eyes on the waves. The short, sweet Wetland hike in the center of the park is worth the walk, as are the WWII bunkers buried in the dunes and the bayside cypress grove. The sheltered cove just south of the Coast Guard station is the perfect place to rock hop though tidepools on a spring day.
Want more oysters? Aqua-rodeo Farms is Humboldt’s smallest oyster farm. Oyster farmer/Captain Sebastian Elrite harvests his Bucksport beauties from Humboldt Bay and sells them raw and grilled at Humboldt Bay Provisions , an all-local tasting room in Old Town, Eureka. He also offers boat tours of his oyster farm year-round. The two-hour tour allows passengers to disembark from the vessel and pick their own oysters and includes an oyster tasting. Go to humboldtbayoystertours.com to book your tour. Give the Captain at least 36 hours notice, as he’s a busy guy.
Every Fall, Humboldt County artists welcome the public into their spaces during the North Coast Open Studios . This is an amazing opportunity to meet local artists, view their work and purchase art at below-gallery prices. You can get a mini-Open Studio experience all year round during our monthly Arts Nights. Visit Trinidad’s Art Night on the first Friday of the month, Eureka’s Arts Alive! on the first Saturday, and Arts! Arcata on the second Friday.
September marks the annual Tour of the Unknown Coast , an epic century bike race that takes riders through the historic town of Ferndale, towering redwoods, coastal mountains and along the Pacific Ocean. The Tour also includes a shorter, family-friendly ride through Ferndale’s farmlands. Whether riding or spectating, the Tour is a great event and opportunity to visit one of Humboldt’s most picturesque areas.

WINTER IN HUMBOLDT
The Redwood Coast is a temperate rainforest, getting anywhere between 30 and 80 inches of rain per year. Winter is the perfect time to embrace the rain and the fog by exploring the redwoods and seeking out our region’s coziest spots.
Exploring Humboldt Redwoods State Park in the winter often means having the place to yourself. The redwood canopy offers shelter from the elements, and the sound of rain in the dreamscape of ferns, creeks and towering redwoods is ethereal. Grab breakfast to go at Scotia Lodge near the north entrance of the Avenue of the Giants and navigate the scenic drive to the Rockefeller Loop Trail, a short trail (less than one mile) of pure winter magic. If you want to more fully immerse yourself in the redwoods, follow trail signs to the Bull Creek Flat North Trail and hike along the creek.
Another of our favorite ways to while away a rainy day is touring cozy spots to eat, drink and shop in Old Town Eureka. Visit Dick Taylor’s Chocolate Factory along the bayfront for chocolate tastings, and a behind the scenes tour. Be sure to ask about the story behind Dick Taylor’s renovation of this historic building. Walk around the corner to Old Town boutiques Shipwreck and The Bodega
Shipwreck is a funky, curated collection of vintage and handmade goods for men, women, children and the home. Bodega features exquisitely made clothing, jewelry and apothecary. The products in both shops are gorgeous and the shops themselves are lovely places to while away a rainy day.
Dip into a bit of our local culture with Humboldt Marble Weekend , an annual gathering of glass artists from across the country that includes glass blowing demonstrations, exhibits and the famous Marble Hunt. Glassblowing is a true Humboldt art form, and this is an amazing opportunity to get up close and personal with the artists and even hunt for your own exquisite glass marbles throughout the county on one of the quirkiest scavenger hunts you’ll ever find.
Winter is the perfect time to visit cute-as-a-button Ferndale. Often referred to as “the best kept secret on the Redwood Coast,” this small Victorian town of Ferndale is officially California National Landmark no. 883. We suggest visiting Mind’s Eye Manufactory for coffee, pastries and creative inspiration and then window-shop along Main Street. Visiting during December? Don’t miss the Lighted Tractor Parade!
