IT’S ALL HERE HUMBOLDT BAY TOURISM CENTER

MEET THE MAKER

Humboldt Bay Tourism Center was founded in 2013 as an innovative approach to visitor services in Humboldt County. Our goal is to connect tourists and locals with the very best our region has to offer. The Center offers a curated selection of area tours and adventures- from river rafting to horse-drawn carriage rides to oyster farm tours. Visitors can also virtually explore the region on our iPads- all custom-loaded with apps and links to local lodging, dining, and activity options.

Every Sunday from 6-9, Humboldt Bay Tourism Center hosts local makers - artists, chefs, farmers, adventurers, brewers- to share their craft with visitors and locals. We’ve had wine and cheese pairings narrated by local vintners, a woodworking class by a local artisan, a sampling of gourmet hot chocolate from local chocolate makers, and slideshows from local rafting guides. Meet the creatives who make life in Humboldt interesting!

TASTE The cornerstone of Humboldt Bay Tourism Center is Taste, our all-local tasting room. We pour local beers, wines, ciders, and kombucha by the glass, the bottle or tasting flight. Our trained staff recommend and serve cheeses, meats, breads, and desserts that are all hand-crafted locally. Our oyster bar, under the supervision of oyster farmer Captain Sebastian, serves raw and broiled oysters with a variety of gourmet sauces. He’s behind the bar every Tuesday after 5pm. Come see him!

TOURS Humboldt Bay Tourism Center features a curated collection of local tours and activities designed to help you choose your own adventure on the Redwood Coast. Whether it’s a romantic kayak paddle at sunset, a tour of one of local craft businesses, or an intense surf session, we strive to offer tours that suit every visitor’s tastes. If you’re local, think of us as you plan itineraries for your out-of-town guests. We’re happy to help you. If you have questions about the tours listed on our website, ask our friendly staff for more details.

If you are a local Maker or have a small business you would like to share with our community, please contact Humboldt Bay Tourism Center about hosting a Meet the Maker of your own at help@hbtc.info. We’ll help you plan and promote your MTM, including a promotional spot on 95.5 The Bay.

SOUTH CAPE MENDOCINO S TAT E M A R I N E R E S E RV E A WILD RIDE TO A ‘LOST’ DESTINATION By Jennifer Savage

The distance from where you exit U.S. Hwy. 101 at Fernbridge to where you arrive at Cape Mendocino is about 22 miles. That’s 22 miles of jaw-droppingly gorgeous vistas, free ranging black-and-white cows and hairpin turns that descend steeply into a valley and just as sharply back out. You’ll see Bear River, red-tailed hawks and the occasional intrepid bicyclist. Eventually – the drive takes about an hour – you’ll find yourself on an alarmingly angled road, having traversed “the Wildcat” to reach what’s reputed to be the westernmost point in the continental U.S. Off the tip of Cape Mendocino is Sugarloaf Island and just south of that dramatic seastack is Steamboat Rock – you can’t mistake its ship shape for anything else. Both Sugarloaf and Steamboat are “special closures,” a California Department of Fish & Wildlife designation for areas deemed extremely important for seabirds and marine mammals. In between lies the South Cape Mendocino State Marine Reserve (SMR), a nine-square mile marine protected area (MPA), part of the North Coast’s network of 20 MPAs that cover about 13 percent of the region’s state waters. The offshore habitats, both above and below the surface, are crucial breeding grounds for cormorants, black oystercatchers, tufted puffins and other bird species who make their homes in and around the ocean. The area also provides feeding opportunities for marine mammals such as seals, sea lions and whales. In addition to the oft-seen grey whales, sometimes orcas, sperm whales and even blue whales can be seen from shore. There’s a pullout at the south end of the MPA, where you can park and access the beach. The area’s rocky shores offer exceptional tide pooling – and note how the sand’s color is a result of offshore tectonic rock and greywacke, a dark sandstone. This part of the coast is often windy – watch for windsurfers catching the world-class waves – and bringing sturdy kites is encouraged. This is the beginning of California’s Lost Coast and the only part where a road runs alongside the beach, affording visitors the sense of being removed from the world (not much cell service in these parts!) while still being a short enough drive to enable a day trip. Further south, the road turns inland, to Petrolia and the mouth of the Mattole River, gateway to the King Range National Conservation area. If you venture into town – named for being the first place in California where oil was discovered – stop into The Yellow Rose Bar & Grill, 28763 Mattole Road, (707) 629-3273 for a full service restaurant and bar experience. You can also find several AirBnB options in the area if you feel like extending your getaway. Alternatively, if after a day of beachcombing, you find yourself heading back over the hills, treat yourself to dinner back in Ferndale at Curley’s Full Circle, 460 Main St., (707) 786-9696. (Originally published in The Emerald Magazine.) To learn more about California’s marine protected area network, visit californiampas.org or yournec.org.

DRIVE THROUGH TREE Not one but three giant redwoods offer motorists the opportunity to steer their wheels through a living tree. All are right off US Highway 101 (known as the Redwood Highway) within an hour or so drive of the historic seaport of Eureka. They are privately owned and charge a nominal fee.

Shrine Tree - 707-943-1975 The closest to Eureka is the Shrine Drive-Thru Tree, 50 miles to the south in Myers Flat, on the world famous Avenue of the Giants.

Chandelier Tree - 707-925-6464 50 miles south in Leggett, this redwood is so named because of the enormous branches balanced on either side of the trunk, branching out 100 feet above the ground, like a giant three-armed candelabra.

Klamath Tree - 707-482-5971 Sixty minutes north of Eureka, the newest of the drive-thru redwoods sits atop a hill near Redwood National Park and Yurok tribal lands along the Klamath River.

TOUR HUMBOLDT 2015 / 2016

Paradise Royale. LESLIE KEHMEIER, FLICKR.COM CREATIVE COMMONS

SEQUOIA PARK

Run, walk or bike the short trails through 67 acres of redwood forest, meadows, and creeks. There’s even some old growth stands in there. The park’s duck pond, playgrounds, picnic tables, and zoo make it the place to spend the day with little ones (and bigger ones, too).

ARCATA COMMUNITY FOREST

Explore 2,350 acres of second growth redwood forest on the east side of Arcata. The Nature Loop is only .55 miles long, but can be linked to other trails for a longer day hike. By itself, the Nature Loop circles the lower levels of the forest. It’s easy and it’s magical.

FERN CANYON

Wade through the creek and over footbridges through this verdant fern-lined canyon. This can be done as an easy, 1 mile out-and-back hike. It can also be linked with the John Irvine and Miner’s Ridge trails (our personal favorite at HBTC) for a full-day of redwoods, ferns, creeks, and beaches. Bonus points for elk sightings.

BIKE PARADISE ROYALE

HIKING & BIKING THE LOST COAST

You’ve got to drive “a bit of a ways” for this one, but it’s worth it. And by “worth it” we mean once-in-a-lifetime single track rides. The entire trail system consists of over 25 miles of mountain bike trails, and the 12.1 miles Paradise Royal Loop is the highlight. A demanding climb is balanced by flowy descents, all in the ruggedly beautiful Lost Coast.

BIKE HAMMOND TRAIL

A family-friendly ride on a paved trail that hugs the Pacific coastline north of Arcata. Start at Mad River Bridge and coast past pastures, neighborhoods, beaches, and...more beaches. This 11-mile round trip ride is as pretty as it is accessible.

By Amy Cirincione O’Connor

The North Coast boasts some of the most gorgeous hiking and biking trails in the country, all within a short drive from HBTC. You won’t battle crowds on the trail or fight for parking. You will see some enchanted forests and epic seascapes. We recommend the ones below, rain or shine!

BONUS

Drive the Avenue of the Giants. It’s what all the tourists do, for a reason. Drive south from Eureka and ditch the 101 for this scenic 31-mile alternative. Get out as often as you like to hike, swim, shop and eat. We especially love the hikes around Bull Creek Flats, dipping in the Eel River, and lunching at the Peg House.
