IT’S ALL HERE

HUMBOLDT COUNTY

Welcome to Humboldt Bay, a wild and scenic place that offers equal parts adventure, culture, and relaxation. We take great pride in our redwood trees and our surf breaks. We also appreciate a good meal, a craft cocktail and fine art. Whether you’re new to town, entertaining guests, or just passing through, we're glad that you're here. By all means, act like a tourist! Buy something with Bigfoot on it. Drive everywhere — very slowly. Take pictures of every Victorian building and tall tree you see. We hope you appreciate our slower pace of life and take time to explore life around the Bay.

LODGING

Our favorite places to stay around the Bay are comfortable, well designed and authentically Humboldt. Whether you're looking for an historic boutique hotel, a Victorian bed & breakfast, or a family-friendly vacation rental, we can help you feel at home. In the pages of Tour Humboldt you'll find photos and descriptions of stylish lodging options that will help you to live like a local.

TOURS

This edition features a curated collection of local tours and activities designed to help you choose your own adventure on the Redwood Coast- a romantic kayak paddle at sunset, a tour of one of local craft businesses, or an intense surf session. We strive to offer tours that suit every visitor’s tastes. If you’re local, think of us as you plan itineraries for your out-of-town guests. We’re happy to help.

SHOPPING

Humboldt Bay is a mecca for craft business. Here you'll find designers, chefs, farmers, adventurers, brewers and shopkeepers who are eager to share their craft with visitors. Shops and galleries line the picturesque streets of Old Town, Henderson Center, and Arcata, each filled with unique gifts that tell a story.

ARTS

Humboldt is a community of fishermen, loggers, and farmers who have worked our lands and waters for generations. We’re also a community of artists and artisans whose work keeps things new and exciting on the North Coast. There are dozens of galleries and studios in the region that allow visitors, many of which are profiled in these pages.

ARCHITECTURE OF THE BAY

The neighborhoods surrounding Humboldt Bay boast some of the most varied and storied architecture in Northern California. Our photogenic Victorian mansions tend to get the most attention, but there are also gorgeous California Craftsman and Midcentury homes that have been restored to their historic glory.

Eureka is known as a Victorian Seaport and the shops of Old Town and the former mansions of lumber barons reflect the architecture of the late 1800s. The Carter Mansion and the Pink Lady have been beautifully restored as a Bed and Breakfast and vacation rental, respectively. As you walk the streets of Old Town you’ll see more modest, but still intricate Victorian architecture. If you have the time, Hillsdale St (just beyond Old Town between 12th and 13th St) has some of Eureka's best preserved Victorian homes.

Craftsman bungalows are a quintessential early 20th century house style that is beautiful in its simplicity and seems to fit naturally into our tree-lined, foggy streets. Craftsman homes have exposed rafters, beams and braces. They often use river rock or brick in their exteriors and have intricately designed windowpanes and built-ins. The 2600-2700 blocks of L Street and the 2100- 2200 section of B Street in Eureka are clustered with beautiful Craftsmans.

Following WWII, Arcata and Eureka enjoyed a housing boom that emphasized affordable, modern architecture. Of particular local historical significance are Pierson Homes. They can be found scattered around the Bay and in tract communities like Sunnybrae in Arcata. These ranch-style homes are typically light-filled with redwood paneling and low-pitched roofs. They are a great find when they come up for sale, as they are often as affordable as they are iconic.

HIKING HUMBOLDT

Humboldt Bay is the eco-tourist destination of a lifetime. Whether you want to hike, bike, or drive, you can choose your own adventure. Our favorite hikes take you through old-growth redwood forests, fern canyons, and desolate beaches.

NEAR THE BAY

Explore 2,350 acres of second growth redwood forest on the east side of Arcata. The Arcata Community Forest offers trails from easy to challenging and is friendly to hikers, bikers and horseback riders. Even the most accessible trails immediately sweep you from the mundane world into a dreamscape of ferns, creeks and towering redwoods. Stop by Arcata City Hall for a map or print one from the city’s website. Our favorite loop starts by the playground and climbs through the canopy and creek beds on Trails #1, #2,#3 and #4 before returning on the easy graded #9.

The 5 mile Elk River Trail in Headwaters Forest Reserve is a popular destination, but the majority of its users only enjoy

part of the trail. The first mile is level and paved, making it easily accessible to bikers, skaters, and children. The next two miles are unpaved and have a very small elevation gain. You can stick to these first sections of trail and have an easy, breezy day along the South Fork of the Eel River. Or you can ante up and commit to the full 11 mile loop. After leaving those tricycles and dog-walkers behind, you’ll be enveloped by the cool quiet of the forest’s canopy. After a short, steep climb, you enter a loop trail through a beautiful old growth grove, and you’ll feel the redwood magic.

The Humboldt Bay Trail system will eventually connect the Elk River to southern Arcata. Today, you can hike or bike from the south at the Hikshari’ trailhead along the Eureka waterfront all the way to Old Town and the Boardwalk. The wide, paved trail highlights the natural beauty of the Bay and brings you up-close and personal to Eureka’s complex identity as both an industrial waterfront and a preserved Victorian seaport.

feature 8 |

NORTH

Wade through the creek and over footbridges through the verdant Fern Canyon. This can be done as an easy 1 mile out-and-back hike. It can also be linked with the John Irvine and Miner’s Ridge trails (our personal favorite) for a full-day of redwoods, ferns, creeks, and the most beautiful beach you’ll ever have to yourself. Bonus points for elk sightings. The trails through Lady Bird Johnson Grove is one of the most popular in Redwood National Park. The 1.4 mile loop trail crosses a beautifully designed bridge, offers views of the ridge-top redwood forest and feels very secluded. Also an excellent spot to take your requisite “me hugging a giant redwood” photos.

SOUTH

Some visitors to our redwoods only view them through their windshields. We prefer to actually leave the road and get up close and personal with our towering tree buddies. Doing so doesn’t always require a big commitment- the

Homestead and Big Tree Loop in Humboldt Redwoods State Park right off the Avenue of the Giants delivers maximum bang for minimum hiking buck. The Big Tree Trail leads hikers through a grand, dense old growth grove along the creek. It crosses Mattole Road and follows the creek to Albee Creek Campground (If you’d like to stay the night, may we recommend site #25?). Take the lush, quiet Homestead Trail back to the Big Tree area to complete the 2.4 mile loop.

HUMBOLDT'S MARINE PROTECTED AREAS

Overwhelmed by the plethora of California coastal destinations to explore? Narrow down your options by visiting the state’s 124 marine protected areas! In 2012, California completed the United State’s first network of marine protected areas (MPAs), becoming an international leader in ocean conservation. These MPAs conserve and restore wildlife and habitats in our ocean just as national and state parks do on land. And just as you visit parks on land, MPAs are open for public enjoyment.

Here in Humboldt we have ten MPAs that provide a range of coastal habitats from kelp forests to coastal wetlands and rocky reefs to sandy ocean floors. It is not only allowed, but encouraged to get out and enjoy these areas. Whether it be swimming, diving, surfing, kayaking, bird watching, or simply relaxing in nature, there is the MPA for you. Just make sure you take proper precautions and know the rules before you go! Here’s a closer look at two of our Humboldt County MPAs.

READING ROCK STATE MARINE CONSERVATION AREA AND STATE MARINE RESERVE

This hidden gem of a beach will have you marveling at mountains of driftwood, gurgling Redwood Creek, rocky reef tidepools, and a backdrop of redwood trees. You might be all alone except for some local seals sunning themselves on the sand spit. On a clear day, if you look offshore to the

North you might be able to see Reading Rock itself in all its glory. It lies just outside of the MPA and is a favored fishing ground that is historically important to the Yurok Tribe. Reading Rock SMCA and SMR protect both rocky reefs and sandy bottom habitats. These habitats are essential for many species including halibut, harbor seals, sea lions, murres, guillemots, cormorants, auklets, kelp, lingcod, cabezon and kelp greenling.

SOUTH HUMBOLDT BAY STATE MARINE RECREATIONAL MANAGEMENT AREA

Characterized by intertidal mudflats and eelgrass (Zostera marina) beds, the South Humboldt Bay SMRMA is perhaps one of the most unique of Humboldt’s MPAs. Humboldt Bay is California’s second largest estuary and holds about 40 percent of the state’s eelgrass. Eelgrass is beneficial to humans and wildlife - it not only cushions shorelines from wave energy, breaks down pollutants, and is highly effective in carbon sequestration, but provides critical habitat for seabirds, waterfowl, fish, and and many marine mammals. The SMRMA is an important nursery for marine and estuary fishes, including halibut, salmon, stag horn sculpin, surf perch, leopard sharks and rays. Millions of migratory birds rely on this area along the Pacific Flyway and more than 200 bird species, including 80 kinds of water birds and four endangered species, regularly feed, rest, or nest on the refuge or other areas around the bay. Want a closer look? Nearby Hookton Slough offers boat launch access for kayaking and paddle boarding.

COMMUNITY CHOICE ENERGY

This past May, Humboldt County became the eighth local jurisdiction in California to provide Community Choice Energy to its residents and businesses. Humboldt joined Mendocino, Sonoma, Marin, San Francisco and several other communities now offering locally-controlled electricity options.

For years, investor-owned utilities like PG&E have been the only choice for most Californians when it comes to electricity supply. A state law adopted in 2003 allows local governments to procure electricity on behalf of local customers, with power delivery still handled by the local utility. This has allowed customers access to lower rates and more renewable power, with lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Humboldt County’s program comes courtesy of Redwood Coast Energy Authority, a trusted provider of energy efficiency services for over a decade. We’re pleased that the community has welcomed the program, with over 90% of electric customers choosing to take advantage of our cost savings and locally controlled service. Community Choice Energy is now available throughout the county, with the exception of Ferndale, which will join the program early in 2018.

In addition to our base program, which now provides over 40% renewable power to the county, we offer a 100% renewable REpower+ option. An average household pays just five to six dollars extra per month for this service. Two local municipalities, the Cities of Blue Lake and Arcata, have chosen to switch all their public facilities over to REpower+ and are now powering their operations on 100% renewable electricity.

Community Choice Energy is made possible by ratepayer dollars. At the same time we’re helping utility customers cut their electric bills, we’re also setting aside a portion of revenues that will be used to build new renewable energy projects and pursue other energy initiatives creating clean industry jobs for the people of Humboldt County. Our transportation team promotes the adoption of electric vehicles in our region and actively seeks funds to plan, implement, and manage electric vehicle public charging infrastructure. We also continue to provide energy conservation services to residences and businesses throughout Humboldt.

Speaking of the people of Humboldt, all of you helped develop and set direction for this new program through the workshops and surveys you participated in during planning and startup. We continue to welcome the public to our monthly Board meetings – come let us know what you think. See our website for meeting schedules and agendas.

SHOPPING BEYOND THE PLAZA

The Plaza is the focal point of the small college town of Arcata. The grassy square is flanked by boutique shopping, dive bars, and artisanal espresso. We love all of those things, but we highly recommend walking a few blocks off the Plaza to dive deeper into the Arcata shopping scene. Peridot in South Arcata’s Marsh District (145 G St. Suite E) offers a carefully curated collection of unique, highend styles from Japan, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York. The boutique also highlights the work of local designers and has a small selection of vintage items. The location is a bit off-the-beaten path, but the shopping experience is well worth the short walk from Arcata Plaza. Humboldt Furniture (1085 K St) is our go-to shop for vintage furniture and housewares. There’s lots of bohemian

accessories that scream “dorm room,” but they also have a nice variety of mid-century, rustic and modern pieces at reasonable prices. The shopkeepers have great taste AND are welcoming and helpful, which is not a common combo in the vintage world.

Arcata’s Creamery District is a vibrant, eclectic art and commerce community centered around the historic Creamery Building in Arcata. The ramshackle building itself is a local landmark, with its 80 foot high tower (now a vacation rental and studio space), roof decks, and enormous multi-paned windows. Fun, inspiring shopping is tucked into the nooks and crannies of the District, including vintage clothing at Bang Bang Vintage (824 L St), apparel at Seapod, art at MyKin Design Studio and handcrafted and antique furniture at the Back Porch (1380 9th St).

FIRE & LIGHT

Fire & Light was formed in 1995 as a partnership between the Arcata Community Recycling Center in Humboldt County and a group of local investors who wanted to develop a beautiful use for recycled glass. They devised a method for melting crushed glass in furnaces, adding pigment, and pressing the molten glass into bowls, plates, and glasses. The resulting rainbow-hued tableware is a truly unique local art form. Fire and Light glass can be found in homes across the region and is a popular souvenir for visitors.

When we opened Humboldt Bay Provisions, we knew we wanted to serve our local food, beer and wine in Fire and Light glassware. We wanted our visitors to taste the best that Humboldt had to offer. Sipping a locally brewed beer from a Fire and Light pint glass seemed to be the perfect celebration of Humboldt’s artisan and maker community.

Tours are available Mondays through Fridays at 10am and 12pm with 24 hours notice. Call 707.825.7500 to schedule a tour. Limit 15 per tour unless scheduled 30 days in advance by phone.

The factory showroom is open Monday - Saturday from 9 AM - 5 PM at 100 Ericson Court Suite 100A in Arcata.

For years, the rich spectrum of colors in Fire and Light’s glassware have brightened our tasting room in Old Town. Every guest seems to have a favorite color (or several). So this year, we asked Fire and Light to help us create a unique color palette that represented our design aesthetic and the natural beauty of Humboldt Bay. The color palette we selected represent what we love about where we live and work. Icicle and Twilight evoke the shades of our oyster shells. The color of Humboldt Bay in the sunlight is Aqua. Copper conjures the salvaged redwood that we use throughout our spaces.

Over the next few months, we will be transitioning to this beautiful, refined palette in all of our spaces, including the cabins and rooms at Humboldt Bay Social Club. We are deeply appreciative of the artists at Fire and Light for collaborating with us on this project and making our world a little more luminous.

DRIVE THRU TREES

Not one but three giant redwoods offer motorists the opportunity to steer their wheels through a living tree. All are right off US Highway 101 (known as the Redwood Highway) within an hour or so drive of the historic seaport of Eureka. They are privately owned and charge a nominal fee.

Chandelier Tree - 707-925-6464 (Photo on Left)

70 miles south in Leggett, this redwood is so named because of the enormous branches balanced on either side of the trunk, branching out 100 feet above the ground, like a giant three-armed candelabra.

HUMBOLDT BOTANICAL GARDEN

Eureka, CA: Featuring magnificent views of Humboldt Bay and the Pacific Ocean, this 44.5 acre site was started in 1991. The garden site and the area’s climate, which is on the edge between two worlds - Mediterranean and the Pacific Marine - allows for diverse groups of plants to thrive. Bring a book, binoculars or a picnic and stay for a while. More adventurous hikers can walk along the secluded, unpaved trails that meander through the gardens. Walk Peter Santino’s labyrinth in the “All Happy Now” garden.
