HUMBOLDT BAY PROVISIONS

Humboldt Bay Provisions was founded in 2013 as an innovative approach to visitor services in Humboldt County. Our goal is to connect tourists and locals with the very best our region has to offer. Humboldt Bay Provisions offers a curated selection of area tours and adventures - from river rafting to horse-drawn carriage rides to oyster farm tours. Visitors can also virtually explore the region on our iPads - all custom-loaded with apps and links to local lodging, dining, and activity options.

We pour local beers, wines, ciders, and kombucha by the glass, the bottle or tasting flight. Our trained staff recommend and serve cheeses, meats, breads, and desserts that are all hand-crafted locally. Our oyster bar, under the supervision of oyster farmer Captain Sebastian, serves raw and broiled oysters with a variety of gourmet sauces. He’s behind the bar every Tuesday after 5pm. Come see him!

TOURS

Humboldt Bay Provisions features a curated collection of local tours and activities designed to help you choose your own adventure on the Redwood Coast. Whether it’s a romantic kayak paddle at sunset, a tour of one of local craft businesses, or an intense surf session, we strive to offer tours that suit every visitor’s tastes. If you’re local, think of us as you plan itineraries for your out-of-town guests. We’re happy to help you. If you have questions about the tours listed on our website, ask our friendly staff for more details.

MEET THE MAKER

Every Sunday from 6-9pm, Humboldt Bay Provisions hosts local makers - artists, chefs, farmers, adventurers, brewers- to share their craft with visitors and locals. We’ve had wine and cheese pairings narrated by local vintners, a woodworking class by a local artisan, a sampling of gourmet hot chocolate from local chocolate makers, and slideshows from local rafting guides. Meet the creatives who make life in Humboldt interesting!

If you are a local Maker or have a small business you would like to share with our community, please contact Humboldt Bay Provisions about hosting a Meet the Maker of your own. We’ll help you plan and promote your MTM, including a promotional spot on 95.5 The Bay.

TOUR HUMBOLDT MAGAZINE

Tour Humboldt is an adventure lifestyle magazine focused on life around Humboldt Bay. Tour Humboldt features the very best our region has to offer- our favorite local products, lodging, shops, and tours. The magazine is an in-house publication of the Humboldt Bay Provisions. We publish Tour Humboldt twice annually, in both print and online editions. Feel free to read through Tour Humboldt while you're visiting us, or ask your server for a take-home copy for purchase. We love where we live, and we'd love to show you around.

HUMBOLDT BAY PROVISIONS OFFERINGS

At Humboldt Bay Provisions, we pride ourselves on bringing our guests a delicious and diverse taste of the best Humboldt County has to offer - from local libations to Captain Sebastian’s delectable Bucksport oysters. This season, we are beginning to offer a carefully curated line of in-house goods, including glassware, cold-brew coffee, kombucha, chocolate and oyster sauces. We’re excited to give you a taste of our own Provisions!

Humboldt Bay Provisions glassware is handmade from recycled wine bottles, all sourced from the local wineries we serve in our tasting room. Our glassware is durable, elegant, and environmentally responsible. We will soon be serving many of our drinks in these glasses.

The cold-brew process provides a smooth, rich coffee with a high caffeine content. Because caffeine is water soluble, the extended brew time used in cold brewing extracts the maximum caffeine possible while leaving the heat-soluble bittering acids behind. We offer coldbrew on tap and will soon have it in bottles “to go.”

Coming soon to our taps is our own kombucha, a traditional ferment of black tea that is often noted for its tonic qualities. Kombucha is a popular low-alcohol alternative to the local beer, wines, and ciders we currently serve.

This is an exciting time for Humboldt Bay Provisions! We look forward to sharing our new goods with you and continuing to celebrate Humboldt Bay.

WALKING IN THE RAIN

The rain is here. From November through March the Humboldt Bay will get about 30 inches of rain. It comes in gentle mists and ferocious downpours. If you live here, you embrace it in all its forms. One of our favorite ways to while away a rainy day is touring cozy spots to eat, drink and shop in Old Town Eureka

Start the morning with a kick at Because Coffee (300 F St). This snug little spot smells like heaven and is furnished like your favorite aunt’s house. You can order a simple, quality pour-over, but their espresso drinks are so dang pretty it would be a pity to miss out on them.

Order a few of the freshly baked goodies to go and walk around the corner to shop at our favorite Old Town boutiques - Shipwreck (430 3rd St) and The Bodega (426 3rd St). Shipwreck is a funky, curated collection of vintage and handmade goods for men, women, children and the home. Bodega features exquisitely made clothing, jewelry and apothecary. The products in both shops are gorgeous and the shops themselves are lovely places to spend a rainy day.

Brave the elements a bit by bringing your walk down F Street to the boardwalk. The Eureka boardwalk offers views of the bay, the marina (and the Fisherman statue that inspired our logo!) that are especially poetic in the grey and the rain. Keep your eyes open for seal, egrets, and herons as you walk to Jack’s Seafood (4 C St). The industrial interior isn’t as cozy as Because Coffee, but it perfectly complements the seascape viewed through its large windows. Get a bowl of soup and watch the waves, knowing you’ve embraced winter on the Bay.

WINTER WARRIORS

It’s easy to play on the Bay during the summer, but Winter requires special appreciation. For those of us who love to be outside, we make the most of these shorter days. We venture into the wet wearing rainboots and gortex or we say fuggedaboutit and head out in cotton and shorts. Either way, we always keep a dry set of clothes and a filled thermos in the car.

Paddle the Bay

Pacific Outfitters offers a 3 hour tour of Humboldt Bay (by kayaks or stand up paddleboards) that explores local history and wildlife. It’s perfect for beginners and a nice orientation to the Bay for more experienced paddlers. Pacific Outfitters also offers boat and board rentals for those who would prefer to strike out on their own. Tours are offered year round, but must have a minimum of two people. Pick up/drop off is available for an additional fee. For more information on the tour call (844)-926-6566. To book, access pacificoutfittersadventures.rezgo.com via the (Humboldt Bay Provisions) iPads.

Ride the Trails

The Arcata Community Forest has trails from easy to challenging for hikers, bikers and horseback riders. The redwood canopy offers shelter from the elements and the sound of rain in the dreamscape of ferns, creeks and towering redwoods is ethereal. Since many national forests and parks ban mountain biking, Arcata Community Forest offer knobby-tire riders the special opportunity to bike among the redwoods. The trail system includes tight, flowing single track connected by wide fire trails. Pick up a trail map at Arcata City Hall, download one to your phone or print one from the city’s website. If you get lost, just head downhill on a marked trail and you’ll eventually end up in Arcata.

EXPLORE OUR MARINE PROTECTED AREAS

Humboldt County has no shortage of spectacular coastal places to visit. If you are having trouble deciding where to go, narrow down your options by visiting Humboldt’s marine protected areas! In 2012, California completed the United State’s first network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), becoming an international leader in ocean conservation. MPAs conserve and restore wildlife and habitats in our ocean just as national and state parks do on land. In Humboldt, we have ten MPAs in range of coastal habitats from kelp forests to coastal wetlands, and rocky reefs to sandy ocean floors. Here’s a closer look at three MPAs.

If miles of pristine sandy beaches and rolling dunes is your cup of tea, then Samoa State MPA is for you. For watergoing enthusiasts, the Mad River County Park access point provides the opportunity to take your kayak, SUP or boat for a paddle on the Mad River. Or maybe you're the more studious type and want to know more about the area. Visit the Humboldt Coastal Nature Center in Manila, just south of the Ma-le’l Dunes entrance. Friends of the Dunes offers

guided walks in this area on a regular basis. Pack a picnic and spend the day in the dunes.

In addition to being the westernmost point of the lower 48 states, Cape Mendocino also marks the northern gateway to the Lost Coast, the largest undeveloped and rugged stretch of coast in California. Offshore sits Sugarloaf Island, a MPA designation known as a “special closure.” The island provides crucial breeding grounds for comorants, black oystercathers, tufted puffins and other bird species. You can lose yourself in awe of the sheer cliffs meeting black sand beaches and tide pools. This area is also known for its high winds and you might be treated to a show by some local windsurfers and kiteboarders.

A trip to Sea Lion Gulch is the perfect introduction to the Lost Coast. Pack a lunch and depart on a hike along this wild and pristine terrain. As a bonus, you will be able to visit the Punta Gorda lighthouse. You might even be lucky enough to witness an elephant seal colony! These impressive 1,500 to 4,500 lb creatures just took up residence on the Lost Coast this past winter. You are also guaranteed to see harbor seals, Stellar sea lions, a variety of sea birds, many intertidal species, and maybe even a gray whale or two! Make sure to double check the tides as some places are impassable at high tide.

SHOPPING

Old Town Eureka

Listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places, Old Town Eureka is the thriving, cultural heart of the city of Eureka. It is a visitor friendly shopping and event hub of unique shops and classic Victorian architecture. Stretching over several blocks, Old Town Eureka hosts attractions such as The Morris Graves Museum of Art, horsedrawn carriage rides and Humboldt Bay Provisions.

The Arcata Plaza

One of the last remaining original town squares in the country, the Arcata Plaza is the focal point of the small college town of Arcata. The grassy square is flanked on all sides by fun and unique shopping, theaters, bars and restaurants. The plaza is meant to be walked and wandered through. It is a prime location for window-shopping and a gateway to the rest of Arcata, including the Creamery District, the Humboldt Crabs Baseball field and the Arcata Marsh.

The Victorian Village of Ferndale

Often referred to as “the best kept secret on the Redwood Coast,” the Victorian town of Ferndale offers plenty of picturesque, cultural sights and experiences to travelers. Eclectic shopping and dining line Main Street. Kept in pristine Victorian condition, Ferndale is a star in it’s own right. The entire community is California National Landmark no. 883.

DRIVE THRU TREES

Not one but three giant redwoods offer motorists the opportunity to steer their wheels through a living tree. All are right off US Highway 101 (known as the Redwood Highway) within an hour or so drive of the historic seaport of Eureka. They are privately owned and charge a nominal fee.

Shrine Tree - 707-943-1975

The closest to Eureka is the Shrine Drive-Thru Tree, 50 miles to the south in Myers Flat, on the world famous Avenue of the Giants.

Chandelier Tree - 707-925-6464 (Photo on Left)

70 miles south in Leggett, this redwood is so named because of the enormous branches balanced on either side of the trunk, branching out 100 feet above the ground, like a giant three-armed candelabra.

Klamath Tree - 707-482-5971

Sixty minutes north of Eureka, the newest of the drive-thru redwoods sits atop a hill near Redwood National Park and Yurok tribal lands along the Klamath River.
