Quem procurar o que fazer no Algarve, no conhecido portal tripadvisor, verá que a segunda sugestão mais popular não é uma praia. Não é um monumento, nem um campo de golfe, nem um resort de luxo, nem um parque aquático. É algo talvez invulgar para a região: uma fábrica. Os utilizadores do portal recomendam uma visita à corticeira «Nova Cortiça». Para já, é a única unidade fabril algarvia a apostar profissionalmente no chamado turismo industrial.

A procura tem sido tanta que, ainda o ano não terminou (logo, as contas definitivas não estão fechadas) e já passaram mais de 10 000 turistas pelo Parque Industrial da Barracha, no concelho de São Brás de Alportel. Será este um novo nicho de mercado para o turismo do Algarve?

If you look for things to do in the Algarve, in the well-known tripadvisor website, you’ll be amazed by the second most popular choice. It is not a beach, nor a monument; it is not a golf course, nor a luxury resort, but rather a very uncommon suggestion: forget the sun and sea go visit a cork plant: Nova Cortiça. It is the only factory in the Algarve investing professionally on the so called industrial tourism. It has been such a great success that, 2014 is not over yet and over 10,000 tourists visited the cork factory in Barracha, up in São Brás de Alportel. Could this be a new market niche for the Algarve tourism?

Wer über das bekannte Internetportal TripAdvisor herausfinden will, was man in der Algarve unternehmen kann, findet an zweiter Stelle ein ungewöhnliches Angebot. Es ist weder ein Strand noch ein Denkmal, kein Golfplatz oder Luxusressort, sondern die Korkfabrik „Nova Cortiça“.

Es ist die einzige Anlage in der Region, die auf Industrietourismus setzt. Die Nachfrage ist so groß, dass noch vor Jahresende mehr als 10.000 Touristen die Fabrik im Parque Industrial de Barracha im Bezirk São Brás de Alportel besucht haben. Könnte es sein, dass dieses Segment eine neue Marktnische für den Tourismus in der Algarve ist?

Com data marcada para o próximo domingo, 7 de Dezembro, o Rally de Garvão/Santa Luzia (Ourique) é a última prova do Campeonato de Ralis Sul. Já com o título de campeão ganho, Márcio Marreiros, 29 anos, vai participar para “fazer a festa”. Serão 129 km de extensão total, repartidos por 50,22 km disputados ao cronómetro e divididos por cinco etapas classificativas. Em vésperas da última prova de 2014, fomos conhecer os bastidores e a carreira deste piloto de Portimão.

Como é que começou no desporto automóvel?

Márcio Marreiros: O meu irmão já andava na competição há uns anos e fazia algumas provas organizadas pelo Clube Automóvel do Sul. No final das provas, eu ia sempre dar uma voltinha com ele e tentava sempre conduzir. Na altura, eu ainda era pequeno mas os carros já me despertavam o interesse. Depois, quando tirei a carta de condução, começámos a fazer os slalons em conjunto. Eu era o navegador dele e vice-versa. Em 2005 estreei-me no rally de Vila do Bispo.

Desenvolveu algum estilo de condução enquanto piloto?

Tento sempre dar o máximo de espectáculo. Muitas pessoas dizem-me que perco muito tempo com isso. O relógio não pára e temos de fazer bons tempos em prova, como é óbvio. Mas gosto de dar o máximo de espectáculo às pessoas que vão ver o Rally e que apreciam a prestação dos pilotos. Quem já me conhece, sabe que isso é importante para mim. Estou nos ralies também para me divertir e para gostar do que faço. É claro que quanto mais andarmos, quanto mais provas participarmos mais experiência ganhamos. Mas isto não é tudo de mim, alguns pilotos mais velhos foram-me dando as boas dicas de como tudo funciona. Não quer dizer que um dia não vá para uma escola aprender mais um pouco…

Sente que o público está afastado do desporto automóvel?

Sim. É claro que nós pilotos vamos para as provas a pensar no campeonato e em ganhar. Mas se todos nós dermos, se calhar, um pouco mais de espectáculo e se os ralies forem melhor divulgados, o público se calhar poderia aderir e vibrar mais.

Acha que as provas não são suficientemente divulgadas?

A divulgação tem de ser mais forte. Há muitos ralies que as pessoas nem sabem que acontecem. Passam despercebidos.

Isso é frustrante para um piloto? É. É o público que dá emoção aos pilotos. Às vezes passamos por zonas espectaculares, quer em termos de paisagem quer de manobras, e não está lá ninguém para ver. É claro que há pilotos que se calhar até se distraem com o público… mas no geral, penso que é agradável haver pessoas que vibram com o cheiro da gasolina.

Scheduled for next Sunday, December 7th, the Rally de Garvão/Santa Luzia (Ourique) is the final race of the Ralis do Sul championship. Márcio Marreiros, 29 years, winner of this year, will be there racing just for sport, fun and joining “the party”. The rally has a total of 129 km extension, divided into five different time laps. On the eve of his last 2014’s race, we went to find out a bit more about the career of this young driver from Portimão.

How did you get into the car laps?

Márcio Marreiros: My brother was already in the competitions for some years, and he participated in a few laps organized by the Clube Automóvel do Sul. At the end of the laps, I usually went for a ride with him and I always tried to drive.

At the time, I was still too young but the cars attracted me.

Afterwards, when I took my driving licence, we began to do slaloms together. I was his co-pilot and vice-versa. In 2005, I debuted in the rally of Vila do Bispo.

While a pilot, did you develop any particular style of driving?

I always try to perform a great show. Many people say that I lose too much time with that. The stopwatch does not stop and we have to manage to put down lap times, obviously. I enjoy doing my best to impress the spectators of the rally who appreciate the performance of pilots. Those who know me will tell you better how important that is for me. Of course the fastest we lap, and the more laps we do, more experience we gain. However, this is not all for me; some of the older pilots have been giving me good advice on how it all works. But it does not mean that one day I won’t be going to a school to learn a little bit more...

Do you feel that the public disregards the car laps?

Yes. Of course we as pilots go to the laps with our minds on the championship and willing to win. But, maybe, if we all give a little bit more show and if the rallies are better advertised, the public would probably adhere and vibrate more.

Aren’t the laps being sufficiently advertised?

The information needs to be better disclosed. There are many rallies happening and people do not even know it. They go unnoticed.

Is that frustrating for a pilot?

Indeed. The public gives excitement to pilots. Sometimes we pass by stunning areas, whether in terms of the landscape, or the driving manoeuvres, and nobody is there to see.

Die Autorallye in Garvão/Santa Luzia (Ourique) findet am Sonntag 7. Dezember statt. Es ist das letzte Rennen der Meisterschaft „Ralis Sul“. Márcio Marreiros (29) hat den Titel bereits in der Tasche und will das Rennen nutzen, “um zu feiern”.

Das Strecke verläuft über insgesamt 129 km, eingeteilt in Abschnitte von je 50,22 km, die auf Zeit gefahren werden und in jeweils fünf Etappen aufgeteilt sind. Vor dem letzten Rennen des Jahres 2014 haben wir mehr über den Background und die Karriere des Rennfahrers aus Portimão erfahren.

Wie sind Sie zum Motorsport gekommen?

Márcio Marreiros: Mein Bruder fuhr bereits einige Jahren Rennen und hat sich an Meisterschaften beteiligt, die vom Clube Automóvel do Sul organisiert wurden. Nach den Rennen bin ich immer einige Runden mit ihm gefahren und habe versucht, selbst ans Steuer zu kommen. Damals war ich noch ein kleiner Junge, aber Autos haben mich schon immer interessiert. Nachdem ich den Führerschein gemacht hatte, sind wir zusammen auf den Slalomstrecken gefahren.

Ich war sein Beifahrer und umgekehrt. 2005 in Vila do Bispo bin ich meine erste Rallye gefahren.

Haben Sie als Fahrer Ihren eigenen Stil entwickelt?

Ich versuche immer, maximale Unterhaltung zu bieten.

Viele Leute sagen mir, ich würde damit viel Zeit verlieren.

Die Zeit läuft und wir müssen in den Wettbewerben natürlich gute Zeiten fahren. Aber mir gefällt es, den Zuschauern der Rallye, die die Leistung der Fahrer zu schätzen wissen, ein optimales Spektakel zu liefern. Wer mich kennt, weiß, dass mir das wichtig ist. Ich fahre die Rallyes, um Spaß bei dem zu haben, was ich da mache. Aber es geht ja nicht nur um mich selbst, einige der älteren Fahrer haben mir gute Tipps gegeben. Vielleicht werde ich eines Tages eine Schule besuchen, um etwas mehr zu lernen …

Merken Sie, dass das Publikumsinteresse am Motorsport rückläufig ist?

Ja. Wir Fahrer gehen einfach zu den Rennen und denken an die Meisterschaft und den Sieg. Wenn wir alle etwas spektakulärer fahren würden und die Rallyes bekannter wären, wäre das Publikum eventuell interessierter und würde eher mit den Fahrern fiebern.

Glauben Sie, es wird nicht genug Werbung für die Rennen gemacht?

Die Werbung muss verbessert werden. Oft wissen die Leute nicht, dass die Rallyes stattfinden und deshalb bleiben sie weitgehend unbeachtet.

Ist das frustrierend für einen Fahrer?

Ja. Das Publikum überträgt seine Emotionen auf die Fahrer.

Manchmal fahren wir durch spektakuläre Landschaften oder machen riskante Manöver und niemand ist da, um zuzuschauen.

Manche Fahrer lassen sich von den Zuschauern ablenken … aber im Allgemeinen ist es schön, wenn die Leute im Benzingeruch stehen und mit uns fiebern.

Erzählen Sie uns etwas über ihren Kopiloten Rui Serra …

Er hat mir sehr geholfen und mich motiviert und ich bin ihm zu Dank verpflichtet. Oft sorgt er dafür, dass ich leistungsfähiger bin.

In diesem Jahr haben wir uns ein Ziel gesetzt. Er war noch nie Champion der Regionalmeisterschaften im Süden und es immer sein Traum gewesen. Wir sind ganz normal zusammen in den Wagen eingestiegen und haben beschlossen wirklich alles zu geben.

Gibt es ausreichend Rennen, an denen Sie teilnehmen können?

Es gibt nicht sehr viele. Dieses Jahr ist aber glaube ich ganz gut gewesen. Es gab eine Meisterschaft für Piloten, die Kosten sparen wollten (Sprint-Rallyes) und eine weitere für Fahrer, die etwas Unterstützung bekommen und denen daher ein komfortableres Budget zur Verfügung steht. Für das kommende Jahr hat der Verband bereits neue Regularien herausgegeben und die Meisterschaft soll größer werden.

Ele tem-me ajudado e motivado muito e tenho de lhe agradecer. É ele que muitas vezes me faz ser mais competitivo. Puxa muito por mim. Este ano tínhamos um objectivo. Ele nunca tinha sido campeão regional sul, era um sonho. Começámos com grande naturalidade dentro do carro e decidimos dar o tudo por tudo.

Há provas suficientes para participar?

Já houve poucas. Este ano até acho que foi bom.

Tínhamos uma competição para pilotos que querem poupar despesas (rally sprints) e outra para pilotos que têm alguns apoios e um orçamento mais confortável. Para o ano, a Federação já lançou um novo regulamento e teremos um campeonato maior.

E o Regional Sul? Sempre foi um campeonato muito forte. O problema é que os pilotos do sul estão um pouco a ir-se abaixo.

Está a crise instalada para todos, mas com um pouco de esforço conseguimos fazer aquilo que mais gostamos. Este campeonato chegou a ter mais de 70 inscritos e agora, tem à volta de 30 a 20 carros.

Quanto dinheiro é preciso para fazer um campeonato?

Cerca de 50 mil euros. Faz-se com menos, mas a nossa grande aposta é ter o carro muito bem assistido nas devidas condições. Desde que ando nos ralies apenas tive uma desistência mecânica (suspensão partida no rally de Loulé de 2012).

E em relação à sua equipa “team reboques Florival/MC competições”?

Com a estrutura que temos, somos já uma grande equipa. O meu irmão Carlos Marreiros organiza toda a parte logística e o trabalho dos quatro mecânicos. Temos uma carrinha-oficina que tem tudo o que precisamos em caso de avaria, as peças mais importantes susceptíveis de se partirem ou de terem problemas. Temos um carro de apoio equiparado ao que corre, para o caso de ser preciso tirar peças.

Peripécias?

Já aconteceram algumas. Já tive um grande acidente em 2009, com um Opel Corsa 1600. Eu e o meu navegador (Paulo Costa), tivemos uma grande saída de estrada, demos 3 cambalhotas. Ninguém ficou mal. E apesar de termos um carro inferior, ainda conseguimos ser vicecampeões nesse ano.

Como é a sua condução no dia-a-dia? É um pouco desportiva. Às vezes o pessoal que anda comigo queixa-se, ficam aborrecidos e maldispostos…

Traz alguma coisa dos ralies para o trabalho?

Sim, acho que trago um pouco de retorno à minha empresa de reboques.

Of course there are pilots that are easily distracted by the public... but in general, I think it is a pleasure to see people vibrating with the smell of gasoline.

Und die Regionalmeisterschaft Süd?

Es ist immer ein sehr starker Wettbewerb gewesen. Das Problem ist, dass die Leistung der Piloten aus dem Süden eher zurückgeht.

Die Krise hat alle erwischt, aber wenn wir uns ein wenig anstrengen, wird es uns gelingen, das zu machen, was uns am meisten gefällt.

Für diese Meisterschaft hat es 70 Anmeldungen gegeben, aber es nehmen nur etwa 20 – 30 Wagen teil.

Tells us a little bit about your co-pilot, Rui Serra…

He has helped me and motivated me a lot, and I have so much to thank him. He is the one who most of the time makes me become more competitive. He gives me strength. This year we had a goal. He had never been a regional champion, it was a dream. We started very naturally inside the car and then we decided to give our best.

Wie viel Geld braucht man, um an einer Meisterschaft teilzunehmen?

Etwa 50.000 Euro. Es geht auch mit weniger, aber am wichtigsten ist es einen sehr guten Wagen zu haben, der den Bedingungen optimal angepasst ist. Seit ich Rallyes fahre, hatte ich erst einmal einen mechanischen Schaden (gebrochene Antriebswelle bei der Rallye von Loulé im Jahr 2012).

Are there enough laps where to compete?

There were a few. But this year I think it was better. We had a competition for pilots willing to save costs (rally sprints) and another one for pilots who have some supports and a comfortable budget. For the next year, the federation has already launched a new regulation and we will have a large-scale championship.

Und in Bezug auf ihr “team reboques Florival/MC competições”?

Mit der Infrastruktur, über die wir verfügen, sind wir schon ein großartiges Team. Mein Bruder Carlos Marreiros organisiert den gesamten logistischen Bereich und die Arbeit der vier Kfz-Mechaniker. Wir haben einen komplett ausgestatteten Werkstattwagen für den Fall einer Panne, mit allen wichtigen Ersatzund Verschleißteilen. Außerdem haben wir einen Ersatzwagen, der identisch mit unserem Rennwagen ist und dem wir im Notfall Teile entnehmen können.

And what about the championship regional sul?

It was always a very strong championship. The problem is that the pilots from the south are going a little bit down. The crisis affects everyone, but with a little bit more strength we can manage to do what we like the most. This championship had once more than 70 participants enrolled and now, it has around 30 to 20 cars.

How much money is necessary to make a championship?

Around 50 thousand Euros must be available in order to do things right. It is possible to do it with less, but it is very important for me to that the car gets excellent maintenance care.

Since I have been in the rallies, only once I was forced to give up due to a mechanical problem (a broken suspension during the Loulé Rally 2012).

What about your team “team reboques Florival/MC competições”?

With the structure we have, we are already a great team. My brother, Carlos Marreiros, organizes all the logistic part and the work of the four mechanics. We have a mobile workshop with everything that we need in case of a sudden failure, and with the most important car parts which might break or bring problems.

We have a support car which is similar to the one running, in case any parts need to be replaced.

Any peculiar incidents on your way?

We I had a few. We suffered a great accident in 2009, with an Opel Corsa 1600. Me and my co-pilot (Paulo Costa) run off the road and somersaulted three times. Nobody was injured. And although we had a car with less power, we managed to become vice-champions of that year.

How is your day-to-day driving?

A little bit sporty. Sometimes those who are with me complain, they get moody and sometimes a bit of motion sickness…

Do you bring anything back from the rallies with you to work?

Yes, I advertise my towing car company in a very good way.

A vitória? É sempre agradável, tem sempre um sabor especial. Eu gosto de ganhar, mas a minha equipa vibra mais do que eu. No final das provas, eles estão sempre à nossa espera. Às vezes eu e o meu navegador ficamos surpreendidos com a alegria deles.

How do you deal with victory?

It is always a pleasure… victory has a special taste. I enjoy winning, but my team vibrates more than I do. At the end of a race, they are always waiting for us. Sometimes me and my copilot are overwhelmed by their joy.

Fale-nos um pouco sobre o seu carro.. É um Mitsubishi Lancer EVO VI, tem um motor baseado no de origem mas com alterações para que possamos chegar aos limites da performance. Percebo um pouco de mecânica e por isso dou sempre a minha opinião sobre a manutenção e as afinações (set-up) e o alinhamento.

Tell us a little about your car…

It is a Mitsubishi Lancer EVO VI. It has an engine based on the original one, but with amendments, so that we can overcome the limits of our performance. I have some background of mechanics; therefore I always give my opinion to our mechanics about the maintenance to be done, as well as the set-up and the fine tuning of our car.

Que planos para 2015?

Nada está já decidido. Vamos fazer o campeonato regional e talvez o nacional. Para isso teremos de adquirir outro carro, o que não está fora de questão...

What do you plan for 2015?

Nothing has been decided yet. We will race the regional championship and probably the Portuguese national. For that we will need to acquire another car, which is not out of question.

Zwischenfälle?

Es hat einige gegeben. 2009 hatte ich einen großen Unfall mit einem Opel Corsa 1600. Ich und mein Kopilot (Paulo Costa) sind von der Straße abgekommen und haben uns dreimal überschlagen.

Niemand wurde verletzt. Und obwohl wir jetzt einen schlechteren Wagen fahren, ist es uns in diesem Jahr gelungen, Vizemeister zu werden.

Wie fahren Sie im normalen Straßenverkehr?

Etwas sportlicher. Manchmal beschweren sich die Leute, die bei mir mitfahren, sind genervt oder ihnen wird schlecht …

Bringt das Rallyefahren etwas für ihren Arbeitsplatz ein?

Sicher, ich glaube, ich gebe etwas zurück. Ich verhelfe meiner Firma zu einer gewissen Bekanntheit.

Der Sieg?

Ist immer angenehm und ein ganz besonderes Gefühl. Ich gewinne gern, aber mein Team ist aufgeregter als ich. Am Ende der Rennen warten sie immer auf uns. Manchmal wundern mein Kopilot und ich uns über ihre Begeisterung …

Erzählen Sie etwas über ihr Auto ...

Es ist ein Mitsubishi Lancer EVO VI mit Originalmotor, an dem einige Änderungen vorgenommen wurden, um das Leistungslimit zu erreichen. Ich verstehe ein wenig von Kfz-Mechanik und sage deswegen meine Meinung bei Entscheidungen über Wartung, FineTuning und Einstellungen.

Welche Pläne haben Sie für 2015?

Bisher ist noch nichts entschieden. Wir nehmen an den regionalen und den nationalen Meisterschaften teil. Dafür brauchen wir ohne Frage einen neuen Wagen.

Monchique vai ser capital portuguesa do budismo

Monchique will be the Portuguese capital city of Buddhism • Monchique wird portugiesische Hauptstadt des Buddhismus A Fundação Kangyur Rinpoche anunciou no seu portal de internet, o início da construção da primeira fase do projecto do Covão da Águia, na serra de Monchique.

Trata-se de uma área residencial com pequenos espaços para retiros individuais e um centro de conferências para receber investigadores na área da mente (Mind and Life). O projecto passa também pela recuperação da área florestal e das 13 nascentes de água, de forma a criar um local auto-sustentável com energias renováveis e hortas biológicas. Esta fundação está presente em França, no Reino Unido, nos EUA, na Suíça e em Portugal. A partir de 2002, a família de Kyabje Kangyur Rinpoche começou a viver por longos períodos em Portugal, sobretudo no Algarve. Em Fevereiro de 2004, a sua esposa, Jetsün Jampa Chökyi, faleceu em Monchique, pelo que este concelho algarvio é muito querido para os budistas.

The Kangyur Rinpoche Foundation has already initiated the first stage of the Covão da Águia project, in the Monchique Mountains. It is a residential area with small spaces for individual retreats and a conference centre to receive investigators specializing in Mind and Life areas of knowledge. The project also includes recovering the forest area and also 13 water spring, as a way to create a self-sustaining spot with renewable energies and organic gardens.

The Rinpoche Foundation is present in France, United Kingdom, USA, Switzerland and Portugal. Since 2002, the Kyabje Kangyur Rinpoche has spent long periods of time in Portugal, and in February 2004, the matriarch, Jetsün Jampa Chökyi, passed away in Monchique, and therefore this location is considered to be sacred and blessed for Buddhists.

Die Stiftung Kangyur Rinpoche hat mit der ersten Bauphase des Projekts Covão da Águia in der Serra de Monchique begonnen. Dort sollen eine Wohnanlage mit kleinen individuellen Rückzugsräumen und ein Konferenzzentrum für Geistesforscher (Mind and Life) entstehen. Das Projekt beinhaltet auch die Wiederaufforstung des Waldes und die Reaktivierung der 13 Wasserquellen auf dem Grundstück als Grundlage für die Schaffung eines autarken Ortes mit erneuerbaren Energien und ökologischem Obst- und Gemüseanbau.

Die Stiftung existiert bereits in Frankreich, England, USA, der Schweiz und Portugal. Seit 2002 verbrachte die Familie von Kyabje Kangyur Rinpoche lange Zeiträume in Portugal, 2004 verstarb seine Frau Jetsün Jampa Chökyi in Monchique. Seitdem ist dies ein heiliger und gesegneter Ort für Buddhisten.

A petição tem por título «Stop the Cruelty to Horses in Portugal» e é ilustrada com uma fotografia (supostamente) tirada na EN125. Não é a primeira vez que este tema chama a atenção internacional. A associação sem fins-lucrativos ARC Horse Welfare, liderada pela britânica Samantha Birch, tem vindo a intervir junto da comunidade cigana, com resultados bastante positivos desde Julho de 2012.

A British lawyer has launched an online petition calling out for a boycott to tourism in Portugal, which has already gathered 5,000 signatures, to press the Portuguese authorities to protect horses from cruelty which according to the author has “reached epidemic levels”. “I started this petition because of my disgust to see the terrible state in which horses are often left in the Algarve, a region that I visit regularly.

The petition is called “Stop the Cruelty Against Horses in Portugal” and is illustrated by pictures taken on the 125 Road. It is not the first time that this issue calls international attention. The non-profit association ARC Horse Welfare, led by the British Samantha Birch, has been working in several gypsy communities on a long-term basis with very positive results since July 2012.

Eine englische Rechtsanwältin hat eine Petition gestartet mit der zum Boykott von Urlaubsreisen nach Portugal aufgerufen wird und schon 5.000 Unterschriften gesammelt.

Sie sollen als Druckmittel gegen die portugiesischen Behörden dienen, damit diese gegen die schlechte Behandlung von Pferden vorgehen, die ein „epidemisches Ausmaß“ erreicht hat. „Ich habe diese Petition gestartet, weil mir der Zustand der Pferde in der Algarve, die ich regelmäßig besuche, missfällt. Das Szenario ist derartig widerwärtig, dass ich nicht mehr nach“ Portugal reisen kann, so Clark gegenüber der Nachrichtenagentur Lusa. Die Petition „Stop the Cruelty to Horses in Portugal“ wird mit einem Foto illustriert, das an der EN 125 gemacht wurde. Es ist nicht das erste Mal, dass dieses Thema internationale Aufmerksamkeit erregt. Die gemeinnützige Organisation „ARC Horse Welfare“ unter der Leitung von Samantha Birch interveniert seit 2012 relativ erfolgreich in den Roma-Familien.

A derrocada não provocou vítimas nem danos materiais.

Contudo, a fragilidade destas arribas já era conhecida, pelo menos, desde há dois anos, e já estava interdita e vedada uma zona junto ao muro ocidental que circunda aquela zona muito visitada por turistas, pela sua beleza paisagística. Segundo a Protecção Civil que esteve no local, a queda já era previsível, mas terá sido precipitada pelo mau tempo e por pequenos sismos recentes. O festival de música «Sons do Atlântico», que normalmente tinha lugar naquele local, foi, este ano, transferido para Ferragudo e Parchal por razões de segurança.

An area of about two meters wide of the wall of the Fort Nossa Senhora da Rocha, as well as part of the cliff that supported it in Porches, has fallen over into the sea during the end of last week. The incident did not cause victims or material damage. However, the on-going degradation of the cliffs was already known, at least, since two years ago, and an area located close to the western wall that surrounds that much sought after area with beautiful landscapes, had already been blocked. According to the Civil Protection Services who were on site, the collapse was already predictable, but was speeded up by the bad weather conditions and recent earthquakes. The well known music festival “Sons do Atlântico”, which normally takes place on that site, was this year transferred to Ferragudo and Parchal due security reasons.

Laut Zivilschutzbehörde war der Absturz vorhersehbar, ereignete sich jedoch, ausgelöst durch das schlechte Wetter und kleinere Erdbeben in der jüngsten Vergangenheit, früher als erwartet. Aus Sicherheitsgründen musste in diesem Jahr bereits das normalerweise an diesem Ort stattfindende Musikfestival „Sons do Atlântico“ nach Ferragudo und Parchal verlegt werden.

A ideia é divulgar a mobilidade e o conforto que o caravanismo oferece à comunidade de praticantes de ski e snowboard na região e outros aficionados de desportos de acção. Os quatro participantes vão registar toda a viagem em filme. Além do vídeo completo, a expedição vai ter depoimentos diários em tempo real para ouvir na RUA FM (102.7mhz).

The ideal is to show the mobility and comfort that caravan sites in the region offer to the community of skiers, snowboarders and other lovers of adrenaline sports. The four participants will film the trip. Besides the full video, the expedition will also include real daily testimonies to be heard on RUA FM radio (102.7mhz).

Von Faro sind es nur fünf Stunden bis zu den höchsten Bergen der Iberischen Halbinsel. Diese Tatsache könnte künftig zu einer zusätzlichen touristischen Attraktion für Besucher und Einwohner der Algarve werden. João Saraiva (DJ des Uni-Radiosenders der Algarve, RUA FM), Vasco Abreu (Designer), Tiago Tavares (Videofilmer) und Brian Fernandes (Snowboarder des Teams K2 Portugal), werden am 12. Dezember gemeinsam zu einer Expedition aufbrechen, um zu zeigen, wie nah die Sierra Nevada ist. Ihr Ziel ist es, die Vorteile des Reisens mit dem Wohnmobil hinsichtlich der Mobilität und des Komforts unter Ski- und Snowboardfahrern und anderen Extremsportlern aus der Region bekannter zu machen. Há cerca de dois anos atrás era o engenheiro biotecnológico da fábrica que despia a farda do laboratório para guiar os visitantes. Mas como a procura não parou de aumentar, foi necessário contratar uma pessoa para desenvolver o projecto do turismo industrial. O escolhido foi Gianluca Pereyra, 24 anos, licenciado em turismo pela Universidade do Algarve, que está na «Nova Cortiça» há cerca de um ano.

Perguntamos-lhe se identificou um perfil-alvo para este produto.

“Normalmente é um visitante mais maduro que procura um turismo cultural. São pessoas na faixa etária dos 30 aos 65 anos, às vezes até mais. É um turista do norte da Europa e América do Norte (EUA e Canadá).

Trabalhamos também com operadores que trazem fluxo constante da Suécia e temos visitantes vindos da Alemanha”.

No entanto, apesar das parcerias com operadores turísticos que trazem grupos organizados às instalações, a maioria dos visitantes que a fábrica recebe são pessoas em férias ou de passagem pela região que tomam a iniciativa de lá ir.

“O que realmente os move é a curiosidade. A cortiça é um produto muito característico de Portugal. As pessoas vêm talvez pelas rolhas do vinho, e acabam por aprender que se pode fazer muita coisa com este material”, explica Gianluca Pereyra.

“Esta empresa especializou-se em fazer discos de cortiça para rolhas de champanhe, é daqui que saem para alguns dos melhores fabricantes do mundo. É uma actividade bastante especifica dentro de todos os processos de transformação e acaba por ser o nosso core bussiness”. “Em média, produzimos 1,5 milhão de discos de cortiça por dia. Sendo que cada rolha leva 2 discos, significa que cerca de 750 000 garrafas são seladas por dia com os discos que saem da nossa fábrica”, contabiliza.

Estas empresárias norte-americanas vieram conhecer a empresa-mãe da Pelcor.

Feeling the smell of cork fresh from the boiler, observing the traditional hand-selection of cork or the cork-cutting step by step, is a unique experience which has contributed to place the Nova Cortiça as a must destination, according to the recommendations of the tripadvisor users.

About two years ago, it was the plant’s biotechnology engineer, the one who undressed his lab coat to guide visitors. However, due to the strong increase of demand, it was necessary to employ a person to develop the industrial tourism project. The chosen one was Gianluca Pereyra, 24 years old, who holds a graduation in Tourism by the University of the Algarve, and has been working in Nova Cortiça for about one year. In an interview to our paper, we asked him if he had identified a target-profile of visitors for this product.

“Usually, it is a more mature visitor looking for cultural tourism.

We are talking about people aged 30 to 65, or even more. Most tourists come from North Europe and North America (USA and Canada). We also work with tour operators bringing visitors regularly from Sweden and Germany.”

However, despite partnerships with tour operators bringing groups of tourists to the plant’s premises, the great majority of visitors that the factory receives are holidaymakers or people passing through the region, who ventures out by themselves.

“What really attracts them is curiosity”. Cork is a genuine product of Portugal. People come, probably, because of the wine stoppers, and end up learning that this material proves to have many more uses”, explains Gianluca Pereyra.

“This company has specialized in producing cork discs for Champagne cork stoppers, which are supplied to some of the leading world producers. It is a very specific in terms of product transformation process and ends up being our core business”.

“In average, we produce 1,5 million cork discs per day. Once each stopper takes 2 discs, it means that around 750,000 bottles are sealed per day with cork discs coming from our factory”, he estimates.

And is it easy to integrate tourism in a manufacturing company? “Not necessarily. One of our major concerns is to do everything legally. In order to register on the Tourism of Portugal institution, we had to change some of the original statutes of the company, as a way to open the possibility to have another economic activity. Otherwise it wouldn’t be possible for us to invoice the number of visits. We had to register as a tourist entertainment agent”, he explains.

Weil das Interesse stetig zunahm, musste jemand eingestellt werden, der sich um den Aufbau des Projekts Industrietourismus kümmert. Die Wahl fiel auf Gianluca Pereyra (24), Absolvent eines Tourismusstudiums an der Universidade do Algarve, der seit etwa einem Jahr bei „Nova Cortiça“ ist. Wir fragten ihn, ob er ein bestimmtes Zielgruppenprofil für das Besichtigungsangebot feststellen konnte. „Normalerweise sind es eher die reiferen Jahrgänge, die sich für Kulturtourismus interessieren. Menschen im Alter von 30 bis 65 Jahren oder manchmal darüber. Es sind Touristen aus Nordeuropa oder Nordamerika (USA und Kanada). Wir arbeiten außerdem mit Reiseveranstaltern, die einen stetigen Besucherstrom aus Schweden zu uns bringen und es kommen Besucher aus Deutschland.“ Obwohl durch die Partnerschaften mit den Reiseveranstaltern organisierte Gruppen in die Anlage kommen, besteht die Mehrheit der Besucher aus Urlaubern oder Personen auf der Durchreise, die die Initiative ergreifen und die Fabrik besichtigen. „Was uns wirklich antreibt, ist unsere Neugier. Kork ist ein für Portugal sehr charakteristisches Produkt. Die Leute kommen vielleicht wegen der Weinkorken und erfahren erst hier, was man alles mit diesem Material machen kann“, erklärt Gianluca Pereyra. „Diese Fabrik ist auf die Herstellung von Korkscheiben spezialisiert, aus denen Champagnerkorken entstehen, die von hier an einige der wichtigsten Hersteller weltweit gehen. Die Arbeit ist verglichen mit allen unseren anderen Verarbeitungsprozessen, ein relativ spezifischer Vorgang, der zu unserem Kerngeschäft geworden ist. „Im Durchschnitt produzieren wir 1,5 Millionen Korkscheiben pro Tag. Jeder Korken besteht aus zwei Scheiben, das heißt etwa 750.000 Flaschen können pro Tag mit Korken aus unserer Fabrik verschlossen werden“, rechnet er vor. Ist es denn einfach, das Tourismusangebot in den Alltag einer Fabrik zu integrieren? „Nicht unbedingt. Unser Hauptanliegen ist es, die Aktivitäten auf legale Weise durchzuführen. Für die Registrierung bei Turismo de Portugal mussten die Originalstatuten der Firma geändert werden, um vom eigentlichen Firmenzweck abweichende wirtschaftliche Aktivitäten zu ermöglichen. Sonst hätten wir für die Besuche nichts berechnen dürfen. Wir mussten als Agentur für touristische Aktivitäten zugelassen werden“, erläutert er.

E é fácil integrar a actividade turística numa empresa fabril? “Não necessariamente. Uma das nossas maiores preocupações é fazer tudo legalmente. Para fazer o registo junto do Turismo de Portugal foi necessário mexer nos estatutos originais da empresa, de forma a abrir a possibilidade de ter uma outra actividade económica. Porque senão, não poderíamos facturar as visitas. Tivemos que nos legalizar como agente de animação turística”, explica.

A fábrica emprega cerca de 70 pessoas. Segundo Gianluca Pereyra, o fluxo de turistas não interfere na produtividade e os operários “têm sido muito receptivos a esta nova situação”.

Outra questão: numa fábrica cheia de inovações e tecnologia de ponta, os segredos do negócio não ficam demasiados expostos?

“Não. A parte da investigação e desenvolvimento tem segredos, aliás a marca Pelcor é um bom exemplo disso. Há alunos de mestrados na área da economia quem vêm cá estudar a estratégia de internacionalização desta marca” que tem tido um grande sucesso em todo o mundo.

Da sua experiência, Gianluca Pereyra, não tem dúvidas em aconselhar outras unidades fabris da região a seguirem o exemplo da «Nova Cortiça».

E explica porquê: “O turismo industrial é uma grande oportunidade.

Não é um conceito novo. É uma variante do turismo cultural pouco explorada. Nasceu nos EUA numa destilaria de whisky, porque as pessoas queriam ver como se fazia a bebida. A indústria abriu as portas e a consequência é que as pessoas criam fidelização à marca. Existem vários ensaios académicos sobre este tema. Dar a conhecer, permitir ver, providenciar oportunidade para as pessoas terem mais conhecimento é um investimento a longo prazo”, conclui.

The plant employs about 70 people. According to Gianluca Pereyra, the flow of tourists does not interfere in the productivity of the factory and the laborers “have been very receptive to this new situation”, he says.

Another question: In a factory with a lot of innovations and state-of-the-art technology, aren’t the secrets of your business being overexposed?

“Not at all. The part concerning the investigation and development has secrets, by the way, the Pelcor brand is a good example of that. There are master’s degree students of Economy coming here to study the internationalization strategy of this brand”, which has revealed to be a great worldwide success.

From his experience, Gianluca Pereyra, does not hesitate on advising other factories of the regions to follow the same example of Nova Cortiça. And he explains why: “Industrial tourism is a great opportunity. The concept itself is not new. It is a little explored variant of cultural tourism. It was born in a Whiskey distillery in the USA, because people wanted to see how the drink was fabricated. The plant opened its doors to the public and people became loyal to the brand. There are several academic essays on this subject. Sharing information, allowing people to see, providing an opportunity for people to acquire more knowledge is a long term investment”, he concludes.

Eine andere Frage: Werden in einer Fabrik mit viel Innovation und Spitzentechnologie, nicht die Geschäftsgeheimnisse zu offen zur Schau gestellt? „Nein. In der Forschungs- und Entwicklungsabteilung gibt es Geheimnisse, aber die Marke Pelcor ist ein gutes Beispiel.

Masterstudenten aus dem Bereich Wirtschaft studieren bei uns die Strategie zur Internationalisierung der Marke“ die bereits weltweit großen Erfolg gehabt hat.

Aufgrund der gemachten Erfahrungen hat Gianluca Pereyra keine Bedenken anderen Fabriken in der Region zur Nachahmung des Beispiels „Nova Cortiça“ zu raten. Und er erklärt, warum: „Der Industrietourismus ist eine große Chance. Es ist kein neues Konzept. Es ist eine Variante des Kulturtourismus, die bisher wenig erforscht ist. Die Idee stammt aus einer Whisky Destillerie in den USA, wo die Leute sehen wollten, wie das Getränk entsteht. Der Industriebetrieb öffnete seine Tore und die Konsequenz war eine große Kundentreue für die Marke. Es gibt verschiedene akademische Arbeiten zu diesem Thema. Kennenlernen, das Zuschauen erlauben, den Leuten Gelegenheit geben, ihr Wissen zu erweitern – das alles sind langfristige Investitionen“, schließt er.

Espionagem industrial? O segredo é a alma do negócio, mas neste caso, as fotografias dos turistas acabam por encorajar mais gente a vir visitar a «Nova Cortiça».

Sandra Correia, fundadora da PELCOR Em 2003, Sandra Correia causou grande surpresa quando apresentou um guarda-chuva de cortiça para lançar a sua marca Pelcor, nascida na «Nova Cortiça».

Desde então, esta marca tem vindo a afirmar-se no mundo inteiro, pela sua aposta no design de produtos inovadores para o mundo da moda. A mentora é também umas das empreendedoras portuguesas mais reconhecidas e premiadas da actualidade. Mesmo com tanto sucesso, Sandra Correia não descura o potencial do turismo industrial.

O turismo industrial é importante para vocês? Em que medida?

Sandra Correia: É importante porque, no fundo, é uma alternativa ao próprio turismo que o Algarve pode oferecer. Por outro lado, pode trazer uma nova área de actividade económica para a região. Como tínhamos muitos pedidos para visitas à nossa fábrica, decidimos realmente criar esta possibilidade.

Começamos profissionalmente há cerca de dois anos. Numa primeira fase estávamos inseridos na Rota da Cortiça, mas como entretanto este projecto se desfez, decidimos sermos nós próprios a tomar a iniciativa e criar a nossa própria rota turística.

Que pode dizer-nos acerca de quem vos visita?

São normalmente pessoas interessadas que estão cá de férias. Ou pessoas que vêm a São Brás de Alportel e que querem saber mais sobre a cortiça, como é que se transforma e para que serve. Também recebemos pedidos de escolas da Holanda e da Alemanha, de jovens que vêm a Portugal em excursões e que querem ver a nossa fábrica, que se tornou conhecida a nível internacional devido à marca Pelcor.

Ou seja, o sucesso internacional da Pelcor tem impulsionado o interesse turistico?

Sim, claro. É um passaporte. Quem conhece a Pelcor quer vir conhecer a empresa-mãe. A procura tem sido crescente.

Alguma fábrica algarvia procurou-vos para seguir o vosso exemplo?

Que eu saiba não. Recebemos muitos jornalistas para divulgar e muitos operadores internacionais para nos conhecerem, mas outras unidades não.

Que planos para 2015?

Vai haver um desenvolvimento de novos produtos na área dos granulados, e uma tecnologia de ponta cada vez maior. Na Pelcor, se tudo correr bem, podemos assistir ao nascimento da rede de franchising das lojas a nível internacional.

In 2003, Sandra Correia caused great surprise when she launched a cork umbrella to present her Pelcor brand, a company which was born in the Nova Cortiça. Since then, the brand has increasingly stood out in the entire world, because of the investment in the design and in innovative cork products for the world of fashion. The head of the brand is also considered to be one of the most wellknown and awarded entrepreneurs at the current time, and she does not neglect the potential of the industrial tourism.

How far is tourism important for you?

Sandra Correia: It is important because, basically, it is an alternative to the tourism that the Algarve can offer. In the other hand, it can create a new area of economic activity to the Algarve. Since we had many requests from people willing to visit our factory, we decided to create this possibility. We started professionally about two years ago. In a first stage we did it under the “Rota da Cortiça”, but afterwards we decided to take the initiative and create ourselves a touristic route.

Can you tell a bit more about your visitors?

Interested holidaymakers; people coming to São Brás de Alportel with the intention to get to know more about the cork processing, how the cork is transformed and what can be done with it. We also receive requests from schools in Holland and Germany; also from youngsters in excursion to Portugal who want to see the new plant which has become internationally known for the Pelcor brand.

So the international success of Pelcor boosts the touristic interest?

Yes, of course. It is the passport. Who knows Pelcor wishes to come here and get to know the mother-company. The demand for visits has been increasing yearly.

Did any other factory in the Algarve visit you in order to follow your example?

As far as I know, not yet. We received the visit of several journalists willing to pass the information, and of many international tour operators as well to get to know us, but other local factories did not.

What can we expect from Nova Cortiça and from Pelcor in 2015?

You can expect a development of new products in the cork granules, and an ever-increasing state-of-the-art technology.

In Pelcor, if everything goes well, we will see the birth of a franchising network of the stores at an international level.

Der Industrietourismus ist wichtig für Sie. In welcher Hinsicht?

Sandra Correia: Er ist wichtig, weil er im Grunde eine Alternative zum eigentlichen Tourismus ist, den die Algarve zu bieten hat.

Auf der anderen Seite kann er auch neue Wirtschaftsaktivitäten auf diesem Gebiet für die Region einbringen. Weil wir viele Besuchsanfragen für unsere Fabrik hatten, haben wir uns dazu entschlossen, Besichtigungen zu ermöglichen. Wirklich professionell haben wir vor zwei Jahren damit begonnen. In einer ersten Phase waren wir Teil der Rota da Cortiça (Korkroute), da sich dieses Projekt jedoch mittlerweile aufgelöst hat, haben wir uns entschieden, selbst die Initiative zu ergreifen und unser eigenes Touristenprogramm zu schaffen.

Wer kommt zu Ihnen?

Hat der Erfolg von Pelcor das Touristeninteresse ausgelöst?

Ja, natürlich. Das war die Eintrittskarte. Wer Pelcor kennt, kommt hierher, um die Mutter-Fabrik der Marke kennenzulernen. Die Nachfrage gestiegen und hat jedes Jahr zugenommen.

Plant irgendeine Fabrik in der Algarve ihrem Beispiel folgen?

Soweit ich weiß nicht. Es kommen viele Journalisten, die über uns berichten wollen und viele internationale Reiseveranstalter, um uns kennenzulernen, sie sind aber an anderen Fabrikanlagen nicht interessiert.

Was dürfen wir 2015 von „Nova Cortiça“ und von Pelcor erwarten?

Wir dürfen die Entwicklung neuer Produkte auf dem Gebiet der Granulate erwarten, eine Spitzentechnologie, die immer besser wird.

Wenn alles gut läuft, werden wir die Geburt einer internationalen Franchising-Ladenkette der Mark Pelcor erleben.

Está sim, na sua invulgaridade. E nas histórias que trazem consigo. Só assim se explica que uma santa portuguesa, levada para França por imigrantes, e danificada pelas balas da Segunda Guerra Mundial, apareça agora aqui, à espera de quem a leve…

But that is not just what matters to couple Mário Gast and Ana Paula Morgado, founders of the « The shop of the useless items», open since February, in the heart of Faro. The shop has its own philosophy: the worth of things can’t be judged upon its utility, but rather by their quirkiness and the stories they carry along. This may well be the only way to explain why the image of a Portuguese saint, once taken to France by immigrants, and damaged by the bullets of the Second World War battle, is now on display here, awaiting for someone to take it somewhere again..

“As coisas já estão no mundo antes de nascermos. E quando nós partimos, elas continuam o seu caminho por aí. É por isso que escolhi este nome, um pouco polémico, para fazer as pessoas pensar”, diz Mário Gast ao sabor de um cigarro lento.

Na verdade, o nome da loja foi inspirado pela obra de Hugo Pratt, criador de Corto Maltese, “O Desejo de ser Inútil”. Pratt defendia que cada homem deveria ter uma cultura humanista, e deu ao seu famoso personagem uma vida pouco comum. “Viagens e fantasia”, palavras que Mário Gast elege como lema da loja.

“Não são apenas velharias, são coisas fora do comum, boas para as pessoas excêntricas. Coisas que as pessoas hoje chamam de vintage. Na realidade, não sei o essa palavra significa”, brinca.

Mário Gast herdou o apelido e o gosto pelo coleccionismo da mãe (holandesa), que já era coleccionadora ecléctica de “relógios de pulso, brinquedos antigos e de tudo um pouco”. Formou-se em cinema no conservatório, e trabalhou nalguns clássicos do cinema português, mas viria fazer vida profissional na TAP. “Muitos colegas aproveitaram isso para comprar carros melhores. Eu aproveitei para viajar pelo mundo e tenho aqui muitas coisas que trouxe de países como India, Brasil, Tailândia, Camboja, e Birmânia”.

Depois de alguns anos de “garimpo” nas feiras de velharias do sotavento, em particular a da Fuzeta, Quelfes e Tavira, Gast e a esposa encontraram o espaço ideal para se instalarem. Uma antiga carpintaria entre duas igrejas – a de São Pedro, mesmo em frente à porta, e a do Carmo, ali a dois passos. Ao lado, em breve, abrirá uma fábrica de sabonetes orgânicos.

O espaço ocupa o número 13 do Largo de São Pedro. Tem a particularidade de conservar o tecto clerical (abóbodas), possivelmente dos poucos que restam em Faro, já que o espaço sobreviveu ao grande terramoto de 1755. “Dizem que isto seria a entrada do quartel da ordem militar de Santiago”.

“Para além de portugueses, que são os nossos clientes mais importantes, também temos muitos turistas que nos visitam e levam sempre qualquer coisa”, diz. “Por exemplo, azulejos que são fáceis de levar na mala do avião”. Gast sublinha que este tipo de negócio é muito intermitente. Há dias bons, e outros de pinga-pinga. Os preços são sempre negociáveis.

A loja não é especializada nenhum artigo em particular. É especializada em invulgaridade. Uma das peças mais enigmáticas em acervo é um objecto encontrado algures no Alentejo, perto de Portalegre, durante uma escavação numa horta. É feito de omoplata de boi. Ninguém sabe datar ao certo, nem explicar o que se trata. Dá ideia de ser uma badana para o trabalhar o trigo.

Está ornamentada com desenhos que parecem de origem celta. Gast considera mandar fazer um teste de carbono-14 (C14) na Alemanha.

Na parede, há alguns calendários da década de 1930, publicidade das lojas de emigrantes portugueses em Nova Iorque. E no país da livre iniciativa, alguém se lembrou de usar a fotografia da nossa senhora de Fátima para vender refrigerantes. “É surreal”, diz Gast.

Outra curiosidade é uma santa portuguesa, levada para França, que perdeu as mãos e o nariz durante uma batalha em plena Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Mas o objecto mais invulgar que por ali passou, foi uma medalha dos Cátaros, encontrada em terras do Algarve.

“Hoje em dia todos temos o dinheiro contado. E portanto as pessoas já estão consciencializadas que mais vale aproveitar algo que ainda tem uso, do que estar a comprar novo. Assim conseguem poupar e usar o dinheiro que sobra noutras coisas mais interessantes que o consumo. Além disso, as coisas não são apenas úteis do ponto de vista prático. Também o são no plano intelectual.

Podemos apenas usufruir da sua beleza”, conclui.

“Things already existed in this world before we were born and when we leave, they carry on their way somewhere else. That is why I have chosen this name, which is a little bit polemic, to make people think”, says Mário Gast while tasting his cigarette.

In fact, the name of the shop was inspired by the work of Hugo Pratt, creator of Corto Maltese, “O Desejo de ser Inútil”. Pratt advocated that every man should have a humanistic culture, and gave his famous character an uncommon life. “Viagens e fantasia” (Trips and fantasies), is the motto that Mário Gast has chosen for this shop. “This is not only old stuff, but rather very unusual items, that are ideal for eccentric persons. The kind of things that today are most known as vintage. In reality, I do not even know what that word means”, he jokes.

The family name Gast, as well as the love for collectibles he inherited from his Dutch mother, who was already an eclectic collector of “wristwatches, old toys and many other items”. He studied cinema at the conservatory, and collaborated in some classics of the Portuguese cinema, but he ended up making a career at TAP. “Many of my colleagues at the time took the opportunity to buy better cars. I gave preference to travelling across the world, and, therefore, I have a lot of items that I brought from countries like India, Brazil, Thailand, Cambodia and Birmania”.

After years searching for items in the car boot sales throughout the Sotavento, in particular in Fuzeta, Quelfes and Tavira, Gast and his wife found the ideal space for a shop. .

It is in an old carpentry located in between two churches – São Pedro, right in front of the door, and Carmo, very close. And very soon, a fabric of organic soaps will open next door.

The space occupies the number 13 of the Largo de São Pedro. It has the special feature of maintaining the clerical ceiling (domes), possibly one of the few that still remain in Faro, since the space survived the great earthquake of 1755. “It is said that this was the entrance to the headquarters of the Military Order of Santiago”.

“Besides the Portuguese, who are our most important clients, we also have a lot of tourists visiting us and they always buy something”, he says. “For example, the tiles which are easy to transport on the plane”. Gast highlights that this type of business is very intermittent. We have good days and days that are very slow.

The prices are always negotiable. The shop does not specialize in an item in particular. It is specialized in uncommon stuff. One of the most enigmatic pieces is an object which was found somewhere in the Alentejo.

Not far from Portalegre, during excavation works in a vegetable garden. It is made of Ox scapula. No one can determine it’s exact date of origin, nor explain what it is about. It seems like something to work the wheat. It is ornamented with drawings from the Celtic period. Gast is thinking about requesting a carbon 14 test in Germany. On the walls there are some calendars from the 1930 decade, advertising Portuguese emigrant’s shops in New York. In the country of the freedom of initiative, someone remembered to use a picture of Nossa Senhora de Fátima to sell refrigerants. “It is surreal”, says Gast.

Another curiosity is the image of a Portuguese saint that was taken to France, and lost its hands and nose during a battle of the Second World War. The most unusual item which appeared in his shop was a Cathars medal, that was found in the Algarve,.

“Nowadays, we are all short of money. Therefore, people are now much more aware of the need to reuse old stuff, instead of buying new ones. Thereby, they are able to save money and use the money that is left for other much more interesting things, rather than consumption. Besides that, things are not only useful in the practical point of view, but also on an intellectual level. We can take advantage of its beauty” he concludes.

Antiquitäten sind in Mode, das ist klar. Aber sie sind nicht das Einzige, was das Ehepaar Mário Gast und Ana Morgado – die Begründer der «Loja dos objectos inúteis» (Laden der unnützen Gegenstände) – interessiert. Eröffnet wurde der Laden im vergangenen Februar. Seine ureigene Philosophie lautet: Der Wert der Dinge liegt nicht immer in ihrem praktischen Nutzen, sondern in ihrer Außergewöhnlichkeit und in den Geschichten, die sich dahinter verbergen. Nur so lässt sich erklären, dass eine von Auswanderern nach Frankreich mitgenommene portugiesische Heilige, die im 2. Weltkrieg von Gewehrkugeln getroffen wurde, nun hier aufgetaucht ist und darauf wartet, wer sie mitnehmen wird ...

“Die Dinge waren schon auf der Welt, bevor wir geboren wurden. Und wenn wir gehen, werden sie hier ihren Weg fortsetzen. Deswegen habe ich diesen Namen gewählt, der etwas herausfordernd ist, denn er soll die Leute zum Nachdenken animieren“, sagt Mário Gast, während er langsam eine Zigarette raucht.

Tatsächlich ist der Name von dem Werk „Le Désire d’être inutile“ (Vom Wunsch unnütz zu sein) von Hugo Pratt, dem Erschaffer der Comicfigur Corto Maltese abgeleitet. Pratt vertrat die Ansicht, dass jeder Mensch eine humanistische Kultur vertreten müsse, und verlieh seiner berühmten Figur eine außergewöhnliche Lebensgeschichte. „Reisen und Fantasie“, das sind Worte, die Mário Gast zu den Leitbegriffen seines Ladens erhoben hat.

“Nicht nur Antiquitäten sind ungewöhnliche Dinge, die sich gut für Exzentriker eignen. Heute werden derartige Dinge als Vintage bezeichnet. Eigentlich weiß ich gar nicht, was dieses Wort bedeutet.

Mário Gast hat seinen Nachnamen und seine Sammelleidenschaft von seiner holländischen Mutter geerbt, die auch schon eine eklektische Sammlerin von „Armbanduhren, alten Spielsachen und allerlei anderen Dingen war.“ Er studierte Film an der Filmhochschule in Lissabon und arbeitete bei den Dreharbeiten einiger Klassiker des portugiesischen Kinos mit, begann dann aber seine berufliche Laufbahn bei der TAP. “Viele Kollegen kauften sich bessere Autos. Ich nutzte meine Beschäftigung, um durch die Welt zu reisen und ich viele Dinge hier, habe ich aus Indien, Brasilien, Thailand, Kambodscha und Birma mitgebracht.“ Nach einigen Jahren der Schatzsuche auf den Flohmärkten der Ostalgarve, insbesondere in Fuzeta, Quelfes und Tavira, fanden Gast und seine Ehefrau die idealen Räumlichkeiten für ihren Laden.

Eine alte Tischlerei zwischen zwei Kirchen - São Pedro direkt vor der Haustür und Carmo zwei Schritte weiter. Nebenan öffnet demnächst eine Bioseifenfabrik.

Der Laden liegt am Largo do São Pedro Nummer 13. Die Besonderheit der Räumlichkeit besteht darin, dass die alte klerikale Decke (Gewölbe) erhalten ist, wahrscheinlich eine der wenigen, die es in Faro noch gibt, denn das Gebäude wurde bei dem großen Erdbeben im Jahre 1755 nicht zerstört. „Es wird behauptet, dies sei der Eingang zur Kaserne des Militärordens von Santiago gewesen.“ Neben den portugiesischen Kunden, die unsere wichtigsten Abnehmer sind, kommen auch viele Touristen zu uns und nehmen immer irgendetwas mit”, sagt er. “Zum Beispiel Kacheln, die man bei einer Flugreise ganz einfach im Koffer transportieren kann.“ Gast betont, dass die Geschäfte sehr unregelmäßig laufen – an einigen Tage gut, an anderen Tagen tröpfelt es nur. Die Preise sind stets verhandelbar.

Der Laden ist nicht auf spezielle Artikel, sondern auf Außergewöhnliches spezialisiert. Eines der bedeutsamsten Stücke der Sammlung ist ein Gegenstand, der irgendwo im Alentejo in der Nähe von Portalegre beim Umgraben in einem Garten gefunden wurde. Es ist aus dem Schulterblatt eines Ochsen gemacht. Niemand kann sicher sagen, wann es genau entstanden ist und erklären, um was es sich handelt. Es könnte ein Werkzeug für die Bearbeitung von Weizen sein und ist mit Ornamenten verziert, die keltischen Ursprungs sein könnten. Gast erwägt, eine Datierung anhand der Radiokarbonmethode, in Deutschland vornehmen zu lassen.

An der Wand hängen einige Kalender aus dem Jahr 1930, die von Geschäften portugiesischer Emigranten in New York herausgegeben wurden. Im Land der unbegrenzten Möglichkeiten hat jemand ein Foto der „Nossa Senhora de Fátima“ verwendet, um Kühlschränke zu verkaufen. „Es ist surreal“, sagt Gast.

Eine andere Kuriosität ist eine portugiesische Heiligenfigur, die nach Frankreich mitgenommen wurde und die Hände und die Nase bei einer Schlacht im 2. Weltkrieg verloren hat. Das außergewöhnlichste Stück jedoch ist eine Medaille der Katharer, die im Gebiet der Algarve gefunden wurde.

Momentan ist das Geld bei allen knapp. Deswegen kaufen die Leute eher etwas, was sie auch benutzen können, anstatt etwas Neues zu kaufen. So gelingt es ihnen zu sparen und das übrige Geld für Dinge auszugeben, die interessanter als Konsumgüter sind. Die Dinge sind nicht nur in praktischer Hinsicht nützlich. Sie sind es auch in intellektueller Hinsicht. Wir können von ihrer Schönheit nur profitieren“, schließt er.

É um novo espaço para contar uma história épica da humanidade – a epopeia dos Descobrimentos portugueses – através de 22 figuras de cera e 16 diferentes cenas com efeitos especiais de luz e som. Inaugurou no passado dia 27 de Outubro, na Marina de Lagos e já é um pólo para turismo cultural e um valioso recurso educativo para escolas da região. Nestor Guerreiro, 44 anos, o mentor do Museu de Cera dos Descobrimentos, conta-nos como demorou dois anos e meio a desenvolver o projecto.

It is a new display space willing to tell the epic history of mankind – more specifically of the period of the Portuguese Discoveries –, using 22 wax figures and depicting 16 different scenes with special lighting and sound effects. The waxwork space inaugurated last October 27th, in the marina area of Lagos, and the project is already a main cultural tourism attraction and a valuable educational resource for schools throughout the region. Nestor Guerreiro, 44, the man behind the Discoveries Wax Museum tells us how it took him two years and a half to develop the project.

Es gibt einen neuen Ausstellungsort, wo eine epische Geschichte der Menschheit erzählt wird – das Epos der portugiesischen Eroberungen dargestellt anhand von 22 Wachsfiguren in 16 verschiedenen Szenen mit speziellen Licht- und Toneffekten. Einweihung war am vergangenen 27.

Nestor Guerreiro (44), Mentor des „Museu de Cera dos Descobrimentos“ (Wachsfigurenmuseum der Eroberungen) erzählt uns, warum es zwei Jahre gedauert hat, um das Projekt auf die Beine zu stellen.

Um novo espaço para uma história épica • A new display for an epic history • Ein neuer Ort für eine epische Geschichte “A cera surge como elemento diferenciador. As pessoas têm um fascínio natural por este tipo de figuras e pareceu-me uma mistura para se ter sucesso. Estas figuras foram realizadas por um escultor português, a viver em Inglaterra desde a década de 1980. Esteve ligado a vários projectos em Portugal, nomeadamente o museu de cera de Fátima.

Esteve também ligado a um museu itinerante da história de Portugal que passou por várias localidades do país”, revela Nestor Guerreiro.

“Chegaram a Lagos há cerca de 7 meses atrás e foram adaptadas às necessidades do museu. Foi aliciante poder-se, de forma o mais fiel possível, retratar os protagonistas dos Descobrimentos. Obviamente que há algumas personagens que são mais conhecidas que outras, como é caso do Infante D. Henrique, Cristóvão Colombo e Fernão de Magalhães.

Os trajes foram fruto de um estudo rigoroso, tal como as espadas e todos os adereços” das cenas.

Grau de realismo? “As figuras são à escala. Parecem efectivamente mais baixas que as gerações actuais, porque na verdade, naquela altura não eram tão altas como nós. Basta ver por exemplo, as construções mais antigas”, compara.

Nestor Guerreiro contou com consultadoria científica na elaboração dos conteúdos, já que o museu se socorreu de várias pessoas com formação em história. Uma guia turística ajudou a adaptar o material, e o próprio que fez questão de aprofundar os conhecimentos de História para acompanhar a concepção dos vários cenários.

O projecto teve o apoio de várias empresas, sobretudo da zona Lagos, mas também de todo o Algarve. “A epopeia dos Descobrimentos é a fase áurea da nossa história e sempre tive em mente poder potenciála de uma forma turística. A ideia foi refinada com outras pessoas, e grão-a-grão, várias empresas parceiras participaram com materiais e com equipamentos. Criaram-se sinergias e conseguiu-se concretizar este sonho”, que custou cerca de 50 mil euros.

A visita começa “com o casamento de D. João I com D. Filipa de Lencastre e termina com el rei D. Sebastião”, cujo desaparecimento na batalha de Alcácer-Quibir deu origem a um misticismo que ainda hoje perdura. Não admira, porém que a sua figura de cera tenha direito a uma cena à parte, onde se emula o nevoeiro, do qual, segundo a lenda, um dia há-de regressar.

“A exposição revisita as conquistas do norte de África, aborda o impulsionador Infante D. Henrique, passando pela vida a bordo das caravelas, a escravatura, a pirataria. Fizemos um cenário que junta o Cabo Bojador e o Cabo das Tormentas, passando pela chegada de Cristóvão Colombo às Antilhas, o reinado de D. João II, a chegada à Índia, a descoberta do Brasil, a chegada à China e ao Japão”, tudo em apenas 230 metros quadrados.

Como têm reagido os primeiros visitantes? “Os textos informativos estão organizados para contar a história dos Descobrimentos, tal como a sequência cronológica das várias cenas. Há pessoas que estão mais curiosas sobre as figuras em si e descoram a leitura. Mas há outras pessoas que lêem atentamente tudo de princípio ao fim”.

O contacto com o público escolar e o serviço educativo “é a parte mais importante deste projecto. Já temos várias reservas. As crianças saem fascinadas e aprendem bastante. É um passado que os alunos só vêm nos livros, e aqui podem vê-las, como se tivesse aberto uma janela no tempo.”

Projectos para o futuro poderão incluir empréstimos de peças de outros museus, ao abrigo de protocolos de cooperação. “Está tudo no horizonte. Não será um processo fácil, mas pretendemos contactar outros museus para fazermos parcerias. Vamos fazer melhorias a nível dos efeitos especiais, da iluminação. A zona dos Cabos vai ser mais enriquecida, vai haver neblina, o som vai ser melhorado, os próprios cheiros que fazem parte da cenografia vão ser melhorados. Estamos neste momento a tentar arranjar uma esfera armilar para colocar na cena do Fernão de Magalhães”, para os visitantes circum-navegarem na imaginação…

“Wax arises as a differentiating element. People have a natural enchantment for this kind of figures and it seemed to me a mixture to success. These figures were made by a Portuguese sculptor who has been living in England since the 1980s. He was linked to several projects in Portugal, namely the wax museum of Fatima. He was also linked to a museum travelling across several locations in the country, depicting the History of Portugal”, reveals Nestor Guerreiro.

“The figures arrived about seven months ago to Lagos and have been adapted to the needs of the museum. It was enticing to depict, as faithful as possible, the men behind the discoveries. Obviously, some characters are more popular than the others, like the Infant D. Henrique, Christopher Columbus and Ferdinand Magellan. The costumes have behind them an intensive study, such as the swords and all the adornments “ of the scenes.

Greater degree of realism? “The figures are life-sized. In fact, they seem to be shorter than the actual generations, because at that time they weren’t as tall as we are today. One only have to look, for example, at the more ancient construction”, he compares.

During the elaboration of the contents, Nestor Guerreiro had the scientific advice of several specialists, namely historians. A tour guide helped adapt the material, and he himself has endeavored to acquire in-depth knowledge of history, to follow the design of various scenarios.

The project had the support of several companies, mainly from Lagos area, but also from the entire Algarve.

The Discoveries period is the golden age of our history and I always had in mind to enhance as a touristic attraction. The idea was sharpened with other people’s help, and step by step, various partner companies participated with materials and equipment. Synergies have been created and we were able to fulfill this dream”, with a total investment of around 50,000 Euros.

The visit starts “with the marriage of the King D. João to the Queen D. Filipa de Lencastre and ends with King D. Sebastião”, who disappeared in the battle of Alcácer Quibir, giving rise to a mysticism that still lasts up today. It is not surprising that his wax figure deserved a special space also depicting the fog from where according to the legend, one day, he will come back.

“The exhibition revisits the conquests of North Africa; it approaches the main initiator of the Age of Discoveries, the life onboard of the caravels, slavery and piracy. We built up a scenery that joins together the Cape Bojador and the Cape of Good Hope, as well as the arrival of Christopher Columbus to the Antilles, the reign of king John II, the arrival to India; the discovery of Brazil; the arrival to China and Japan”, all in a total of only 230 square meters.

How was the reaction of the first visitors? “The exhibition labels are organized to tell the history of the discoveries, as well the chronological order of various scenes. There are people who are most attracted by the figures themselves and disregard the reading. And there are other people who read everything very carefully from beginning to the end”.

The contact with schools and the educational service provided “is the most important part of this project. We already have several bookings.

Children become fascinated and learn a lot. It is a part of history which so far children could only see in books, but now the figures can be seen here, as if a time window had been opened.

Other projects for the future include borrowing pieces from other museums, under protocols of cooperation. “It is all on the horizon. The process won’t be easy, but we are willing to contact other museums for partnerships. We will improve the special effects and lighting. The area of the capes will be enriched; there will be fog, the sound, as well as the smell of the scenography will be improved. We are currently trying to arrange an armillary sphere to put on the Ferdinand Magellan scene”, so that visitors can circumnavigate in their imagination....

„Wachs ist ein sehr differenzierter Stoff. Wachsfiguren üben eine natürliche Faszination auf die Menschen aus und dies schien mir die ideale Mixtur zu sein, um erfolgreich zu sein. Die Figuren wurden von einem portugiesischen Bildhauer gemacht, der seit Ende der 1980er Jahre in England lebt. Er hat bereits für verschiedene Projekte in Portugal gearbeitet, insbesondere für das Wachsfigurenmuseum in Fátima. Außerdem war er an einer Wanderausstellung über die Geschichte Portugals beteiligt, die in diversen Ortschaften des Landes zu sehen gewesen ist“, berichtet Nestor Guerreiro. „Die Figuren sind vor etwa sieben Monaten in Lagos eingetroffen und wurden den Bedürfnissen des Museums angepasst. Es war verlockend, die Protagonisten der Eroberungen so detailgetreu wie möglich darzustellen. Natürlich sind einige Persönlichkeiten bekannter als andere, wie etwa Heinrich der Eroberer, Christoph Kolumbus und Ferdinand Magellan. Die Kleidung, die Schwerter und die gesamte Ausstattung“ der Szenen „sind das Ergebnis umfangreicher Studien.“ Wie nahe kommt die Ausstellung der Realität? „Die Figuren sind im Maßstab 1:1 zu sehen. Sie scheinen definitiv kleiner zu sein, als heutige Generationen.

Damals wurden die Menschen wirklich nicht so groß wie wir. Man muss sich zum Beispiel nur die ältesten Bauwerke ansehen“, vergleicht er.

Nestor Guerreiro hatte bei der Ausarbeitung der Inhalte wissenschaftliche Beratung, diverse Historiker haben die Entstehung des Museums unterstützt. Eine Reiseleiterin half bei der Anpassung des Materials und Guerreiro selbst vertiefte seine Geschichtskenntnisse, um die Konzeption der verschiedenen Szenen angemessen begleiten zu können. Das Projekt wurde von vielen Firmen unterstützt, insbesondere aus dem Raum Lagos, aber auch aus der ganzen Algarve. „Das Epos der Eroberungen ist die glorreiche Phase unserer Geschichte und ich hatte immer die Idee im Kopf, daraus eine Attraktion für Touristen zu machen. Die Idee wurde gemeinsam mit anderen Leuten verfeinert und Stück für Stück beteiligten sich immer mehr Partnerfirmen mit Material und Geräten. Synergien wurden geschaffen und es ist mir gelungen diesen Traum zu verwirklichen“, der circa 50.000 Euro gekostet hat.

Der Besuch beginnt “mit der Hochzeit von Johann I. von Portugal und Philippa von Lancaster und endet mit König Sebastian I.“ dessen Verschwinden bei der Schlacht von Alcácer-Quibir (Ksar-el-Kebir im heutigen Marokko) für eine Legende gesorgt hat, an die bis heute geglaubt wird. Es verwundert daher nicht, dass nicht nur eine Figur nach seinem Abbild entstanden ist, sondern auch eine weitere Szene in der Nebel aufsteigt, dem er, so die Legende, eines Tages ensteigen soll, wenn er auf die Erde zurückkehrt. „Die Ausstellung widmet sich auch den Eroberungen in Nordafrika, beschäftigt sich mit Impulsgeber Heinrich der Seefahrer, zeigt das Leben an Bord der Karavellen, die Sklaverei, die Piraterie. In einer Szene sind das Kap Bojador und das Kap der Guten Hoffnung zu sehen, daneben die Ankunft von Christoph Kolumbus auf den Antillen, die Regentschaft von Johannes II. von Portugal, die Ankunft in Indien, die Entdeckung Brasiliens, die Ankunft in China und in Japan“ und das alles auf nur 230 Quadratmetern. Wie war die Reaktion der ersten Besucher? „Die Informationstexte und die chronologische Abfolge der Szenen sind so geordnet, dass sie die Geschichte der Eroberungen erzählen. Manche Leute interessieren sich nur für die Figuren und übergehen die Texte. Andere wiederum lesen sich alles aufmerksam von Anfang bis Ende durch.“ Der Kontakt zu den Schülern und der Bildungsservice „sind der wichtigste Teil dieses Projekts. Wir haben schon viele Reservierungen. Die Kinder gehen begeistert und lernen sehr viel. Diese Vergangenheit kennen die Schüler nur aus Büchern und hier können sie diese durch ein offenes Fenster in der Zeit betrachten.“ Zukünftige Projekte könnten das Ausleihen von Ausstellungstücken bei anderen Museen im Rahmen von Kooperationsabkommen umfassen. „Das alles steht noch in den Sternen, aber wir wollen andere Museen kontaktieren, um Partnerschaften einzugehen. Außerdem planen wir Verbesserungen bei den Spezialeffekten und der Beleuchtung. Dort wo die beiden Kaps nachempfunden wurden, wollen wir die Szenerie bereichern, es soll Nebel geben, die Tongestaltung wird verbessert, selbst die Gerüche, die Teil des Szenenbilds sind, werden optimiert. Momentan suchen wir eine Armillarsphäre, die wir in die Szene mit Ferdinand Magellan einbauen wollen“, damit die Besucher die Umschiffung in ihrer Imagination nachempfinden können …

Não somos refinados gastrónomos. Somos gente de prazeres simples e instinto apurado o suficiente para fugir de experiências enganadoras.

Em vez de uma dica fácil, procuramos os segredos. Desta vez, na terra da (boa) cortiça.

Demos por nós em frente ao jardim, a admirar alguns trabalhos artísticos nascidos no evento «Calçadas, a Arte sai à Rua», organizado em Agosto passado, por grupo informal de cidadãos.

Na a altura, a ideia foi dar um novo rosto às portas antigas de algumas casas do centro histórico pela mão de jovens pintores.

Perguntámos à primeira pessoa que se cruzou connosco, onde poderíamos comer bem, mas com frugalidade? Os tascos à moda antiga são cada vez mais raros, agora o que está a dar são as tapas. Preferimos, ainda assim, a cozinha tradicional portuguesa. “Vão ao Avenida”. Fomos.

Casa bem composta, bom ambiente, bom cheiro da cozinha, wi-fi grátis, notícias, serviço pronto e eficiente. Se há coisa que gostamos de ver é um bom couvert com produtos do nosso Algarve. Neste caso, um pires recheado de petiscos da marca Manná – fabricados pela Conserveira do Sul, uma empresa familiar fundada em 1954, na cidade de Olhão e uma das poucas do sector ainda restam.

Anchovas e paté de porco, bom pão e azeitonas. Comemos o que havia pronto, isto é, o prato do dia, até porque ainda tínhamos algum trabalho por terminar depois do almoço. A escolha foi filetes e uma feijoada de feijão branco, meia dose 4,5€. Tinto da casa para acompanhar. Achámos a comida muito saborosa, com um toque caseiro, que já é invulgar encontrar. As especialidades são o frango no churrasco e os chocos fritos ao alho. O estacionamento não é difícil, nas ruas perpendiculares e nas traseiras. O restaurante aceita reservas para grupos e encerra à segunda.

Whenever we make a report somewhere and there is some time left for a meal, we always look for a pleasant space to share with our readers. We are not professional gourmets, but we have a good taste for food and an acute instinct to escape from misleading experiences. Instead of following a simple tip, we always strive to discover the hidden secrets. This time, we set off to discover the capital city of cork.

We found ourselves in front of the garden, admiring some artistic works created under the event “Calçadas, a Arte sai à Rua”, organized last August, by a group of citizens. At the time, the idea was that young painters could give a new image to the traditional front doors of some of the houses of the historic centre.

We asked the first person that we met, where could we have a good meal? The traditional tascas where we could taste the typical delicacies are increasingly scarce, and the so called tapas are in fashion now. However, we prefer the traditional Portuguese cuisine. “Go to Avenida”. And so we did.

A house with everything we needed, a good atmosphere, good smell of food, free wi-fi, news, prompt and efficient service. If there is something we like the most, is to see a good couvert of delicacies of our Algarve. In this case, we were offered a small plate full of snacks of the Manná brand - produced by the Conserveira do Sul, a family company founded in 1954 in Olhão and one of the few still in business. We also tried anchovys, pork paté and good bread and olives.

We chose the dish of the day, because we didn’t have much time left and we still had work to do. Our choice was fillets and a half a portion of white beans stew (€4,5). To acompany with a good red wine. The food was very tasteful, with a small homemade touch. The specialties of the house are the roasted chicken and cuttlefish with garlic. Easy parking is available in the streets nearby or in the rear. The restaurant welcomes group reservations and is closed on Mondays.

Immer wenn wir losgehen, um eine Reportage zu machen, bleibt noch etwas Zeit, um nach einem angenehmen Winkel Ausschau zu halten, der es Wert ist, unseren Lesern vorgestellt zu werden. Wir sind keine ausgefeilten Gourmets, sondern Freunde der einfachen Genüsse, aber unser ausgeprägter Instinkt schützt uns vor unerfreulichen Erlebnissen.

Statt einem simplen Tipp zu folgen, machen wir uns auf die Suche nach den wahren Geheimnissen. Diesmal in der Hauptstadt des Kork.

Vor uns sehen wir einen Garten, in dem einige Kunstwerke zu bewundern sind. Diese sind die bei der Veranstaltung «Calçadas, a Arte sai à Rua» im vergangenen August entstanden, die von einer Bürgergruppe organisiert wurde. Junge Künstler waren dazu aufgerufen, einigen alten Türen in der Altstadt ein neues Aussehen zu geben.

Wir fragten den ersten Menschen, dem wir begegneten, wo man gut aber einfach essen kann? Die altmodischen Tascas werden immer rarer, heute gibt es überall Tapas. Wir jedoch bevorzugen die traditionelle portugiesische Küche. „Geht ins Avenida!“ - und das taten wir.

Ein ausgewogenes Haus mit einem angenehmen Ambiente, aus der Küche herüberziehenden Wohlgerüchen, kostenlosem WLAN, Tageszeitungen und einer schnellen und effizienten Bedienung. Wenn es etwas gibt, was uns gefällt, dann ist es ein Teller mit Delikatessen aus unserer Algarve. In diesem Fall war es eine Platte mit Snacks aus dem Hause Manná – hergestellt im 1954 gegründeten Familienunternehmen Conserveira do Sul in Olhão, einem der letzten, die in dieser Branche überlebt haben. Dazu probierten wir die Anchovis, die Schweinepastete, das gute Brot und die Oliven.

Wir entschieden uns für die Tagesgerichte, weil diese schneller serviert werden und nach dem Mittagessen noch ziemlich viel Arbeit vor uns lag. Die Wahl fiel auf Filets und eine halbe Portion Feijoada mit weißen Bohnen für 4,50 €. Dazu der rote Hauswein. Wir fanden die Speisen sehr schmackhaft mit einem hausgemachten Touch, den man heute nur noch selten findet. Spezialitäten des Hauses sind die Grillhähnchen und die gebratene Tintenfische mit Knoblauch. In den umliegenden Straßen oder hinter dem Haus findet man ganz leicht einen Parkplatz. Das Restaurant nimmt Gruppenreservierungen entgegen und ist am Montag geschlossen.
