[ letter from the editor ]

When we started our Neighborhood Gems column a few years ago, we thought we’d surely run out of topics for it. After all, how many special places can there be in a city the size of St. Louis? I don’t know the answer, but we’re still doing the column and we’re nowhere close to exhausting all the cool places around town that deserve a shout-out. Like our next Neighborhood Gems feature on Queeny Park. I sometimes think we St. Louisans take places like this for granted. It’s hard to imagine a prettier suburban expanse. Queeny is a quiet, natural retreat nestled amid million-dollar homes. And even though it’s practically a stone’s throw from one of the busiest roads in town, Manchester, when you’re inside the park’s 569 acres, you may as well be in the wilds of Alaska. There are lakes and bridle paths, hiking markers and deer, eagles and heron. There is even a ranger station, since it’s part of the St. Louis County Parks Department. You can get lost, easily, along its 7.8 miles of trails (trust me on this one), so you should consult a park map or a veteran Queeny hiker before setting off on a path. As for the best time to go, the answer is anytime. In winter the clusters of bare limbs offer a surreal landscape, and don’t worry about being cold: the workout will have you peeling off layers within 10 minutes. Spring is a no-brainer, when buds are popping and birds are twittering. In summer, open field areas emanate a palpable haze that turns to shade as you enter the tree-cover canopies—and you’re as likely as not to encounter horses, riders and the tidy little ‘gift packages’ they leave on the trails. Fall brings its coat of many colors, much multiplied in this woodsy park, as well as the inevitable monochrome when it all goes brown. Every time I visit, I’m thankful that activists thwarted that bond initiative in 1986. You can always build another golf course, but it takes centuries for Mother Nature to build a Queeny. —Dorothy F. Weiner Editor in Chief

cover story

start early thompson foundation for autism by tony di martino It affects more children than pediatric cancer, diabetes and AIDS combined, yet much less is known about it. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder experienced by at least one in every 68 children in the U.S. It occurs in all racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups, and generally appears before age 3. There is no single known cause, although genetics play a major role. Thompson Center for Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders at the University of Missouri focuses on improving the lives of families affected by ASD and related disabilities. Launched in 2005 by Bill and Nancy Thompson, it’s a national leader in ASD care, research, professional training, community outreach and public policy. “We provide comprehensive services for more than 1,000 individuals and families annually, with the goal of helping each child achieve their maximum potential,” says executive director Stephen Kanne, Ph.D. Thompson Center researchers and clinicians learn more about ASD every year, Kanne notes. “Each study brings us a few steps closer to earlier diagnosis, more individualized treatments, and better lives for our patients and their families,” he says. “Translating new knowledge into better care is always our priority.” Recently, the center partnered with Mercy Autism Center to expand clinical, educational and research opportunities, and also added a top behavior analyst and researcher from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, SungWoo Kahng, to its staff. Among the 30 innovative research projects currently underway, neuropsychiatrist Dr. David Beversdorf is exploring how integrating ASD symptoms, genetic information and biological data from various research fields can lead to new treatment options. The center is also in the second phase of testing the Autism Impact Measure (AIM), a tool developed by Kanne and child psychologist Micah Mazurek that assesses the

effectiveness of autism treatment. The study is funded by a $3.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. “A valid, reliable treatment outcome measure will help therapists and families quantify the impact of behavioral and drug therapies, and lead to more individualized treatments,” Kanne says. And geneticist Dr. Judy Miles and her University of Missouri colleague Gang Yao are studying pupillary light reflex, a possible biological marker for autism that may help diagnose the disorder at earlier ages, he adds. Early diagnosis and intervention enables individuals with ASD to achieve more productive lives, but the financial cost is high. It’s in the Cards is an annual auction event benefiting Thompson Foundation, the center’s fundraising arm. The event, featuring St. Louis Cardinals players and coaches, takes place April 30 at the Marriott Renaissance Grand Hotel. Matt and Mackenzie Carpenter serve as honorary cochairs. “The auction provides resources for research, clinical care, education and financial aid for children and families who come to Thompson Center,” says foundation board member Jack Reis. “Our goal is to reach as many families as we can and make a real difference in quality of life for these kids, so they can function as fully as possible.”

Even if you trust your hairdresser with your deepest, darkest secrets, here’s one from Ballwin with whom you might not want to share your credit-card information. A mugshot shows one Shannon Clerc with her hair a little mussed, but otherwise she looks like she could have been cuffed and escorted out of a PTO meeting. Clerc ran a West County salon (and spa) and somehow persuaded clients to divulge charge card information— with which she charged about 14 grand in several cases of identity theft over the last few years, authorities say. The latest was last month. Reportedly she told longtime customers that she herself had been a victim of identity theft and persuaded them to jot down the pertinent info, including the security code on the back of the card, because she didn’t feel comfortable running their cards through the electronic reader. (And we have some swampland in Gumbo we can sell ya’.) It seems that she even threw her two kids under the bus—cops say she blamed the youngsters for her misdeeds, saying they were messing around with her phone. Wow. Neither of these innocents has advanced beyond elementary school, both being younger than 10! At this writing, Clerc was still at large, her bond set at $10,000. (Why not $15,000—you know, round it up to make it closer to what’s missing?) A citizen of Turkey was sentenced last month in the U.S. federal court here for smuggling ineffective cancer drugs to Chesterfield. Some of the drugs were diluted or otherwise doctored, others were moldy and contained no active ingredients, the feds say. Sabahaddin Akman, owner of a Turkish wholesale drug company, received a 2½-year sentence for the crime; his co-defendant was sentenced last year, also to more than two years in federal prison. Akman admitted to preparing the drugs for shipment in small packages to avoid detection by U.S. Customs. What’s more, to fly under the radar, some parcels were labeled as gifts or product samples, with little or no value declared. Chemotherapy drugs may need to stay refrigerated, yet many of the parcels Akman and his co-conspirator shipped were not. We feel for the patients victimized by this scam, a crime for which words like ‘abhorrent’ and ‘egregious’ were invented.

been incidents over the past few weeks from Glendale, Des Peres and Webster Groves. Apparently this is just the tip of the iceberg, because the Internal Revenue Service has staffed-up to face the threat nationwide. Last year, the IRS had 3,000 employees dedicated exclusively to fraudulent returns, twice the number from the previous year. In addition, the agency asserts that more than 35,000 of its workers have been trained to help resolve the issue. One problem is easy to solve: Many people still carry their Social Security card in their wallet, which is akin to leaving the car unlocked. It should be kept under lock and key, at home. Be alert to possible identity theft if you receive a notice from the IRS or learn from your tax professional that: More than one tax return for you was filed You have a balance due, refund offset or have had collection action taken against you for a year you are alleged not to have filed a tax return IRS records indicate you received more wages than you actually earned or Your state or federal benefits were reduced or cancelled because the agency received information reporting an income change. Irvin Wessler, 93, survived World War II. But he might not have survived the fire that nearly destroyed his house in St. Charles if his neighbors hadn’t pounded on his door and woke him up, firefighters say. Wessler was able to escape through the front door and taken to a hospital to check whether he had suffered smoke inhalation from the fire, which broke out just before 7 a.m. last

Tuesday (Feb. 17). Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze in about a half-hour. Officials say it might have been sparked by a space heater in the garage. RadioShack had become a dinosaur. As technology hurtled into the future, the omnipresent retailer seemed unable to keep its footing. Its core identity had become fuzzy. Was it a store for electronics hobbyists? A place to buy a phone … or establish service through another company, like Sprint? A stereo retailer, or a haven for computer nerds? A repair shop? It had become all of the above, none of the above—maybe both—and finally slid down the slippery slope into bankruptcy, filing for Chapter 11 protection on Feb. 5. The stores always seemed too small to be all things to all people; the company couldn’t compete with big-box behemoths such as Best Buy. Based in Fort Worth, Texas, the electronics retailer will close most of its stores and sell the rest. That’s about 6,500 storefronts, both mall stores and free-standing. About three dozen stores in the metro will be shuttered. I’ll shed a tear. RadioShack was where I bought my first stereo system, and I still have two sets of Optimus speakers from there that have taken a beating and still sound fine after 30 years. Despite unabated grumbling from naysayers and any reports to the contrary, construction on the Loop Trolley will begin next month. Really, we think. Controversy over high bids is history. Lower estimates were received and contractors have been chosen. Visible work will begin with installation of a permanent roundabout near the lion gates (Trinity Avenue and Delmar

Boulevard) to increase safety, improve traffic flow and create a landscaped entrance to the Delmar Loop. Track construction is slated for late May, starting on Delmar near Kingsland Avenue. For those who just joined us, here’s the project in a nutshell: The 2.2-mile fixed-track electrical trolley system will run along Delmar and DeBaliviere, connecting The Loop’s restaurant, shopping, and arts & entertainment district to Forest Park, with its terminus at the Missouri History Museum. The project also includes an overhead contact system, 10 station stops, a maintenance/storage facility, and rehab of vintage trolley vehicles. Meanwhile, on the eastern end of the trolley route, authorities are working with Great Rivers Greenway to extend the St. Vincent Greenway from Delmar along DeBaliviere and south to Forest Park Boulevard, with new landscaping and multi-use paths. The trolley will run adjacent to the greenway. Streetcars are nothing new to The Lou, of course; they just haven’t been around for awhile. The Loop derived its nickname from the streetcar system that served the area until 1966. By the end of this month, some of us will be sinophiles … lovers of all things Chinese. First there was Shen Yun, the athletic and dance spectacle from China staged last weekend at Peabody Opera House. And now comes ‘Children’s China: Celebrating Culture, Character and Confucius,’ which opened Saturday (Feb. 21) at the Magic House in Kirkwood with a splashy celebration of the Chinese New Year. Designed for children 3 to 12, the exhibit explores what life is like for children in China today through six immersive environments— among them a restaurant, school, playground and panda reserve. Kids can put on the pith helmet, so to speak, and learn what the Chinese are doing to save the endangered species. Explorers will learn a little about the elaborate characters making up the alphabet, and visit a restaurant where they can discover the unique role that food plays in the culture. The traveling exhibit is free with a $10 museum admission and will close here in September.

[ASSET$& ANSWERs Q “ “

by tony di martino

How can I determine the appropriate level of risk for my portfolio?

Risk tolerance is an investment term that refers to your ability to endure market volatility. All investments come with some level of risk, and if you’re planning to invest your money, it’s important to be aware of the level of risk you can endure. Your tolerance for risk affects your choice of investments and the overall makeup of your portfolio. That’s why I always do a risk tolerance worksheet with my clients. I also feel it’s crucial to have a thorough understanding of the client’s complete financial picture. Together, we review a chart that illustrates the relationship between risk and return for five hypothetical portfolios, based on a long-term (five- to 10-year) time horizon. In addition, I ask a few subjective questions to help gauge a client’s tolerance for risk. Are they able to sleep at night knowing they’ve put a portion of their hard-earned dollars in a particular investment? Remember, it might be easy to tolerate a high-risk investment while it’s generating doubledigit returns, but consider whether you’ll feel the same way if the market takes a downward turn, with your investment leading the way. It’s best to invest at the level of volatility you’re comfortable with. We then create an investor policy statement, putting the client’s strategy in writing and committing to a disciplined investment plan. It’s both a blueprint and a report card. Reviewing the document at least once a year allows the client and me to stay on track to reach his or her goals.

The goal of every investor should be to stay invested as long as possible. Some say the market is fully efficient, but it’s evident that at times investors act irrationally based on individual behavioral biases. Each portfolio’s risk threshold is determined by how much loss investors can sustain, financially and psychologically, without withdrawing their funds. An appropriate level of risk is one you can tolerate and stay invested with. To determine appropriate risk levels, you must establish both your ability and willingness to take risk. First, define your ability based on your current net worth and future goals. After calculating the returns needed, assess your willingness for risk and fine-tune your portfolio accordingly. To determine your comfort level, keep in mind the behavioral aspects of finance. If you have a behavioral bias called ‘loss aversion’—suffering more psychological pain from a certain percentage of loss than gratification from an equal amount of gain—then you should construct your portfolio with a focus on downside volatility. Risk often is perceived as the enemy, but it can be our ally during portfolio construction. Every portfolio consists of components that either enhance return (stocks) or reduce risk (bonds and alternative asset classes). Since risk historically has been much more predictable than investment returns, investors may achieve the desired level of volatility in their portfolio by figuring out the optimal allocation to risk reducers.

With our fair city constantly adding new restaurants, music venues, boutiques and other businesses, we wanted to launch our own reader survey. So in this issue, we bring you the first T&S Top 100 List, the results of an online poll of readers and their favorite spots in 10 categories. See where they like to sip, shop, dine, lounge, laugh and all-around spend their time and money.

five star burgers

favorite places to GRAB A BITE OR A DRINK You’ve had a long day; you need sustenance. Where do you like to go to unwind, fill up, and feed body and soul? Is it the turkey buger that put Five Star on the short list, or the irrisistible happy hour? Mission Taco is easy: how can you beat their tasty $3 tacos? And when it comes to Italian food, Cafe Napoli has been treating us well for 25 years, with authentic dishes and large portions.

Love to shop? Where do you go for cool clothes, great shoes, fun jewelry and have-to-have handbags—at the right prices? One thing is clear: your fellow St. Louisans know where! Plaza Frontenac, our chi chi retail emporium, got a great, big shoutout—so did Saks and Neiman inside. Nordstrom and its cut-rate cousin The Rack also are clear faves. Neighborhood boutiques got a share of the buzz, as did the secondhand shop-for-a-cause, The Scholarshop.

There’s so much to love about being part of our friendly, philanthropic, fabulous city. It all starts with the people, who are the basis for the oft-mentioned sense of community, Midwestern values and great schools. Then there’s our incredible standard of living: affordable, stately homes, low gas prices, easy-to-navigate highways, free cultural institutions— and let’s not forget: friendly people make for philanthropic people. Add it all together, and we have a community that strives to keep everyone happy, healthy and appreciated.

TOPTOURISTATTRACTIONS

You’re looking for a fun way to spend the day (or night). Should it be outdoorsy or intellectual? Musical or visual? High-brow or low-energy? See what others say they like to do. The Fox, with its mesmerizing Moorish/Art Deco interior, is a shoe-in. And then there’s The Pageant, the go-to spot for music and more. Feeling cultural? Look no further than the Symphony or the Rep. And if all you want to do is veg out, the Moolah and Jazz at the Bistro stand ready to deliver.

WHAT WE ABOUT LIVING IN STL

What do we like to show off about the Show-Me State? When we get visitors, it’s hard to decide what to do first. But St. Louisans have spoken! Forest Park and its many attractions dominate the list as must-do’s with visiting friends and family. And we’re not known as the brewery state for nothing: hops tours were mentioned, as was that magnificent beer-based estate, Grant’s Farm. Where else can you ride a train, pet goats and drink free beer all in one place?

We all have a go-to place that makes us feel like Queen for a Day. Here are where St. Louisans go to get fit and get fixed-up. For working up a sweat, Pure Barre, Wellbridge and Club Fitness racked up the votes. And it’s easy to see why Clayton hotspot Dominic Michael Salon made the list—the complimentary cappuccinos take the edge off those exhausting, 90-minute mani/pedis. As for full-out lounging around the pool and hot tub, The Four Seasons Day Spa got a special shout out, probably for its panoramic views of the mighty Mississippi and our beloved St. Louis skyline.

CUSTOMER SERVICE COUNTS

Who deserves a shout-out for being exceptionally attentive, efficient and extra-nice? St. Louisans are paying it forward by naming names! When you’re at the end of your rope—like shoe-shopping with kiddos—Laurie’s staffers are there with the patience of Job. And for the chronic ‘returners’ out there, Nordstrom and Trader Joe’s have made that easy with no-questions-asked policies. St. Louisans have said it clearly: service counts. That’s why The Gatesworth, where the answer is always yes, is on the list. Same for Distinctions and Genovese, known for personal service with a smile.

BEAUTIFYING YOUR HOME Is midcentury modern your passion, or is shabby chic more your thing? See where other locals flock to feather their nests. St. Louisans like to mix and match at longtime custom shop Expressions, but they also like comfy contemporary from national faves like Crate & Barrel. Clearly, they’re searching for some unique pieces, too, since boutiques with one-of-a-kind finds are well represented in Arlene Lilie, Three French Hens, The Refind Room and Ooh La La.

Maybe it’s your cleaners, landscaper or pool people, but everyone works with a company they simply can’t do without. How would we feel if that Burberry coat got ruined at the cleaners? Fortunately it won’t, since we are blessed with tried-and-true places like Al’s and Marquard’s. Same for the cars. St. Louisans don’t trust theirs with just anyone, which is why Mungenast, Waterway and Clayton Car Wash are on the list. And don’t throw away those old Cole Haans—bring them to Cobblestone, like your neighbors obviously do!

NOT ALL TREATMENT PLANS ARE CREATED EQUALLY! WHY DO WE HAVE SUCH A HIGH SUCCESS RATE? The Doctors at Feet for Life Podiatry Centers use a non-surgical combination treatment with the assistance of ultrasound guided technology. Each treatment plan is specific to the individual condition of the patient and targets the precise area creating the problem. This is unlike the blanket treatments offered by many healthcare providers that offer unreliable results.

[ business & pleasure ]

Cielo, the sky-top dining retreat in The Four Seasons, has appropriated the hotel’s gift shop to create River North, a private dining and event space. Cielo’s F&B second-in-command, Jeff Hanson, describes it as a family-style conversation space with a welcoming feel. “ You won’t feel chained to a table. There are cool, in-room options like bars and countertops that encourage one to mosey around or sit back and relax.”

[ east side scene ]

Granite City is the site of chef Eric Brenner’s new venture, Lascelles, a cozy, edgy, bar/bistro that occupies downtown’s old National Bank building. “We saw a need for more dining options in Granite City and hope we can contribute to the downtown redevelopment,” says the Food Network chef. With a menu dubbed “new American, upscale comfort,” Brenner says he’ll offer redefined classics, like deviled eggs with maple glazed pork belly bits. Brenner is banking on winning fans from both sides of the river.

[ high steaks ]

Hollywood Casino’s Final Cut Steakhouse GM Jason Portman has brought chef Pierpaolo Pittia to the table. Expect Pittia’s Italian accent to spill over to the menu’s steaks and sides. Missouri-raised chef Seth Verseman has taken the helm at River City Casino’s 1904 Steak House. While Seth confirms the 45-day aged steaks and sides will remain, the menu will expand. “Look for composed plates, more diversity and a new chef’s table,” he says.

[ crafty move ]

Gerard Craft has unveiled plans to open Porano Pasta & Gelato, promising an affordable grab-’n’-go format in downtown’s Mercantile Exchange Building. Spring also will herald the arrival of Nourish By Hollyberry, a combo cafe-retail outlet along Manchester at Sappington Road, while nearby Winfield’s Gathering Place, which opened last month, is planning two springtime expansions: a Sunday Fried Chicken Supper and an outdoor patio.

[ extra helpings ]

Clayton Restaurant Week has

brought a hearty helping of cash totaling 14K to Operation Food Search, thanks to the participating 19 restaurants, and diners who opted for “extra helpings”—a cash donation beyond their check. In four years, Clayton’s Restaurant Week has raised more than $47,000 to help fight hunger in the bistate region.

all you could want the gatesworth by tony di martino If you’ve ever asked where to find an item in the supermarket only to be met by an indifferent stare, or been ignored in a shop while the sales associate chats on her cellphone, you know that customer service is rare these days. But not at The Gatesworth, a winner in the ‘best customer service’ category in our T&S Top 100 readers poll. The Gatesworth offers residents all the comforts of home—that is, if your home looks like a beautiful resort hotel and includes an award-winning chef, limo service, an elegant salon and spa, a full calendar of educational activities and social events, and a caring staff that caters to your every need. One of the most popular gathering spots at The Gatesworth is its state-of-the-art fitness center, complete with a heated saltwater pool, a soothing hot tub, equipment specifically designed for seniors, and a staff of professional certified trainers. “We’re dedicated to keeping our residents fully engaged in life, and we encourage active aging with a wide range of choices,” says water aerobics instructor Suze Schwartz, who has helped residents stay fit for more than 25 years. “Our pool-based classes are popular all year round, and we add new classes regularly so no one gets bored.” Currently there are seven water fitness classes offered Monday through Friday. “And if you just want to swim laps or splash around, the pool is open until 10 p.m.,” she adds. A typical pool workout addresses cardiovascular health, strength training, flexibility and balance. “It’s especially beneficial for anyone who has arthritis or is recovering from knee or hip surgery,” Schwartz says. “We weigh 10 percent less in the water than we do on land, so exercise is much easier and less stressful.” Carol Max, president of Carol Max Marketing Services, moved to The Gatesworth five months ago. She works out at least five times a week, taking water aerobics, chair yoga and other classes. “The instructors are so caring, just like everyone else on staff,” says the 80-year-old. “After class, you can enjoy a soothing massage, facial or manicure/pedicure in the luxurious spa, or shower in the gorgeous locker room, then get you hair done at the salon. There’s even a barber shop for the guys! The Gatesworth is like a self-contained city—whatever you want or need, they’ll get it for you. No matter what your question is, their answer is always yes. I love it—that’s why I moved here!” The well-being of each resident is The Gatesworth’s main concern, Schwartz says. “We appreciate our reputation for providing the best of everything, and we strive to exceed residents’ expectations. Sometimes they’ll come to class with an ache or a pain, and you can tell they don’t feel their best. But after a few minutes, you can see their motor’s running. When class ends, they say my favorite words: ‘Oh, I feel much better now! I’m so glad I came!’ That always makes my day.”

Schlafly is a darling of hometown brewing,

and both its spots have an aura of community you don’t find everywhere. At the Maplewood Bottleworks location, part of that ambiance comes from hosting a popular farmers market, and from the restaurant’s emphasis on all things local. Now entering its 12th year, the Bottleworks restaurant changes dishes to reflect the area’s seasonal products. The menu lists locally sourced meats, like Meramec Bison Ranch meatballs and Rensing Farms bacon. And while the place is definitely casual and filled with families at dinnertme, the food is considerably more evolved than you’d find in most pizza-andsandwich places. A Deviled Eggs ($8) starter was flavorful, the eggs laced with hot sauce to yield a mild bite, and topped with bacon and blue cheese. Oven-Baked Goat Cheese ($9.25) offered two large mounds of soft, spreadable cheese (from Heartland Dairy) swimming in a delicious

tomato sauce that was slightly chunky and sweet. The standout starter was a bowl of Pen Cove mussels in Thai coconut broth ($15). The bivalves were meatier than most, and the milky broth was a good foil, with its subtle peppery bite. But some of the mussels should have been better scrubbed, as they still retained a bit of ‘beard,’ requiring us to clean them at the table! A Smoked Turkey Club ($10.25) was practically a work of art with its milky-white house-smoked fowl nestled between avocado, thick-cut bacon and toasted Pugliese bread. It came with creamy thyme mayo and choice of side, which for me was potato wedges. Do not miss these thick, long, browned potatoes dusted with herbs and spices. All the ingredients mixed for an explosion of flavor. Also wonderful was the Grass-Fed Pot Roast ($16.75), a hearty winter dish. Three thick slabs of fairly lean meat sat in pan juices with creamy smashed red potatoes and stillcrisp roasted carrots. It was the picture of comfort food.

The Bottleworks has a fun, neighborhood-joint vibe. While I’ve tried plenty of great things on the menu, like the basic burger and the huevos rancheros, there also have been a few misses. The beer, of course, is always good.

f8 |

The flavor was good, and the buttery potatoes and gravy helped soften the beef, since pot roast has little marbling. A fish special, Red Snapper with Charred Butter ($24), was excellent, if on the small side. The tender fillet was perched on a bed of cannellini beans and flash-fried kale, creating an interplay of textures between the beans’ firmness and the kale’s crunchiness. The dish was wellflavored with earthy sage. My complaint, though, is that servers should divulge the cost of off-the-menu specials like this. Diners should know what they’re spending, even if they don’t want to ask. The Blackened Catfish ($15.50), one smallish fillet, came in a beautiful presentation amid a pool of soupy red beans, with some rice nearby to sop up the gravy. Wish there had been more. Don’t miss the Sticky Toffee Pudding ($7.50), a house specialty. The thick block of moist date cake comes sticky with buttery, creamy caramel and a mound of whipped cream nearby. It has a fragrant, brown-sugary flavor and light texture.

It is about a super-secret British spy service that takes on new agents only when one ‘retires’ (is killed). That’s when each Kingsman puts forth his nominee for the spot, and they undergo a series of grueling tests together to determine which one, and only one, has the right stuff. Kingsman ‘Galahad’ (Colin Firth) decides to groom a South London misfit called Gary ‘Eggsy’ Unwin (Taron Egerton). Meanwhile, a nefarious lisping villain, Richmond Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson), is busy implementing a plot to thin-out the earth’s

population through mass destruction—with the help of a stiletto-wearing double-amputee with blades as prosthetic legs (Sofia Boutella). Before you roll your eyes (or think this sounds really cool), I have a spoiler alert: While this movie tries really hard to be smart, funny and cutting-edge, à la MIB, Fargo and Pulp Fiction, it doesn’t come close. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t entertaining, especially if exploding heads and green brain matter are your thing. —DW

PainManagement by Sara Savat

First there’s the physical hurt, then there’s the emotional toll. Constant discomfort wears you down, body and soul. According to the Institute of Medicine, an unbelievable 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain. Managing it is a full-time job. Fortunately, the treatment arsenal is no longer limited to drugs and surgery. Experts say physical therapy is a great way to treat many types of pain, and alternative therapies such as acupuncture, chiropractic and myofasical release offer many patients hope, too.

Neck Pain Neck pain is among the most commonly reported types of pain. It comes either from muscular strain in the shoulders and arms or arthritic changes to the spine. The good news is we can do a lot to mitigate it simply by strengthening the neck with therapeutic stretches and exercises and by making healthy lifestyle changes.

• OSTEOARTHRITIS •

Arthritic changes in the neck, including degenerative disc disease, herniated discs and pinched nerves, are a normal part of the aging process, says Dr. Devyani Hunt, associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at Washington University School of Medicine. “We all get some type of degenerative changes as we age. Those changes don’t always hurt, though. When the disc becomes inflamed, typically because of abnormal mechanics, then the neck can be more painful.” “There is an old saying that you can’t unboil a hard-boiled egg,” says Alethea Eller, D.C., a natural health doctor specializing in Chinese medicine nutrition and chiropractic care at Innovative Health Partners. “While it’s true there is a certain level of damage that cannot be undone, that doesn’t always mean that pain is permanent.” Six out of 10 patients with arthritic changes in the neck improve with physical therapy alone, according to Dr. Manish Suthar, a pain management and rehabilitation specialist. “In individuals who do not respond, medications, injections and —in more debilitating cases—surgery can offer relief,” he says.

• PAY ATTENTION •

Never underestimate the importance of good ergonomics. When the issue is not linked to arthritic degeneration, muscular pain is either caused by major traumas (such as whiplash or falling) or repetitive micro trauma—the stuff you do on a daily basis like slouching at the computer or looking down at a smartphone, Eller says. So if you’re experiencing neck tightness or soreness, first look at your daily habits: are you tensing your shoulders to stay warm in the cold? Watching TV from a funny angle? Holding the phone with your head against your shoulder? And let’s not forget tension, which naturally causes us to raise our shoulders and neck muscles, Eller points out.

• BAD HABITS DIE HARD •

“Our spines are designed to move. Avoiding a sedentary lifestyle or one position for too long, as well as sitting for prolonged periods of time, all can decrease the chance of developing neck pain,” Hunt says. She also recommends regular aerobic activity and avoiding cigarette smoke. And Suthar advises getting up and moving around every 20 or 30 minutes, for those whose occupations involve sitting for long periods of time. Also gently roll your neck and shoulders to loosen and release tension, he adds. And always pay attention to your posture: Avoid slouching or flexing forward, which is very hard for the muscles of the spine. “A lot of neck pain stems from the stress response. Identifying your stress triggers and managing balance in your life is super important,” sums up Eller.

• TREATMENT •

Have neck pain evaluated earlier rather than later to keep it from progressing to a chronic issue, Hunt says. “Sometimes little changes in sitting, standing or sleeping posture can make all the difference. However, these changes have to be lifelong, and a maintenance program of therapeutic exercises and stretches also is key to long-term success.” For neck muscle pains and strains, Hunt says ice is a great anti-inflammatory option without side effects. Acupuncture, massage techniques and certain muscle techniques used by chiropractors can help, too. In addition to chiropractic adjustments and physical therapy to strengthen the muscles of the neck and back, Eller recommends magnesium supplements, which can relax the muscles and reduce tension. Homeopathic Traumeel is one of her favorite natural remedies for pain. “Pain is a normal part of the inflammatory process. If there is one way to incredibly affect your level of pain, it is to eat nourishing, low-inflammatory foods,” she adds. “Consume plant-based foods and avoid processed foods. You will find that your body will do what it was designed to do—heal!”

Footinjuries

If you’ve ever had chronic foot pain, you know all too well that when the foot hurts, nothing seems right. An intricate structure of 26 bones, 33 joints and five ligaments, the foot is prone to injury not only because of its complexity, but also because it has to support our entire body weight. Something can go wrong internally, or we can sustain an injury from some external factor. IT’S THE SHOES, STUPID! Bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles, nerves, blood vessels, skin and even toenail beds can lead to foot pain. But the most common cause is not the foot itself, but poor shoe choices, says Kirkwood podiatrist Dr. Colette S. Weber. “Most pain or injury is caused by either poor shoe choices for the activity or wearing shoes that are past their usefulness but still appear in good condition,” Weber says. She recommends athletic shoes for walking and running shoes for high-impact activity. It’s also important to make sure your shoes fit properly. “Have your feet measured and use this size as a starting point for selecting a shoe. I recommend shopping for shoes at the end of the day when your feet may be slightly larger,” Weber says. A shoe should fit the length and width of your foot and the shape of your toes. And salespeople assurances notwithstanding, increasing a shoe length will not always compensate for needing a wider width, she says.

WEAK FEET Another avoidable cause of pain is the overuse of orthotic devices, according to Dr. Michael Horwitz, a podiatrist at Feet for Life. He says orthotic devices can cause the feet to be more susceptible to injury. “Orthotics are grossly overrated and tend to weaken the intrinsic muscles and decrease proprioception (the sense of relative position of neighboring parts of the body and strength of effort employed in movement) necessary for a strong foot that would resist injury,” he says. Many common foot and ankle injuries, including stress fractures, ankle sprains and plantar fasciitis, are caused by weak muscles in the foot and ankle, Horwitz says. Plantar fasciitis, the most common cause of heel and arch pain, occurs when the plantar fascia, a band of tough tissue connecting the heel bone to the toes, is strained and becomes irritated or inflamed. “All three of these problems can better be avoided by minimalist footwear—footwear that is flat and loosely constructed—at least 20 hours per week,” Horwitz says. “This allows the foot to actually be a foot and not enter into a situation where it is over-padded and not allowed to function the way we were born to function and feel.” Balance exercises like yoga also may help strengthen the foot and ankle to prevent injury, Horwitz adds.

Myofascial Release WHAT IS IT? “Myofascial release is the application of gentle, sustained pressure and movement into the fascial system in order to eliminate connective tissue restrictions, and pain and restore motion,” says Elizabeth Diebold, a massage therapist with Avalon 8 Wellness. Unlike massage techniques, which focus only on relieving symptoms, myofasical release focuses on releasing the cause of the symptoms. The fascia is a tough connective tissue that spreads throughout the body in a three-dimensional web from head to toe, Diebold explains. “It is densely woven, covering and interpenetrating every muscle, as well as all our internal organs and more.” In a normal healthy state, the fascia is relaxed and has the ability to move without restrictions. Physical trauma, scarring or inflammation can cause the fascia to lose its pliability and become a source of tension for the rest of the body. Myofascial release techniques help remove these restrictions and restore equilibrium.

THE ROAD TO RELIEF Foot problems usually appear gradually, with mild symptoms that don’t last very long but over time become more frequent and longer, Weber says. They also can appear suddenly, most commonly from overuse injuries. Most people can treat their foot pain at home with rest, elevation, compression, ice and intermittent heat, Horwitz says. If the condition lasts for more than three or four weeks, though, see a podiatrist. Depending on the injury, treatment options may include oral or topical medication, custom inserts or physical therapy, which consists of gentle stretches like rolling your bare foot on a can. Because your shoes may be the cause of your foot pain, Weber recommends bringing a pair of shoes that are making your symptoms worse to your appointment and try to recall the shoes you were wearing and your activity immediately before your symptoms began.

We all know about the kind of massage that is a relaxing treat. But not many understand myofascial massage, a deeper technique that addresses the fascia, or densely woven connective tissue that covers all parts of our body, down to the cellular level. With the right training, a myofascial massage therapist can treat all kinds of pain, from herniated discs to migraines.

WHEN IT’S RIGHT FOR YOU Jason Bennett, assistant professor of physical therapy and athletic training at Saint Louis University, says release is one of several soft tissue techniques used to address myofascial mobility, “depending on the type of pain and restriction, the patient’s tolerance and underlying pathology. Having a practitioner who is able to perform a comprehensive neuromusculoskeletal exam that identifies potential sources of myofascial pain will increase the likelihood of prescribing or performing an appropriate intervention.” An initial visit with a physical therapist begins with a thorough neuromusculoskeletal examination that includes an assessment of myofascial mobility. “The assessment may identify active trigger points that are painful to palpate (taught bands in the muscle) and/or restrictions in tissue mobility,” Bennett says. Myofascial treatments do not hurt, per se, but they are more intense than the typical massage. And individuals might experience discomfort for 24 to 72 hours after the treatment, while the fascia continues to release and the body continues to readjust to new healthy patterns and release toxins, Diebold says.

WHAT TO EXPECT The number of treatments required will depend on the underlying pain mechanism and the condition. Chronic conditions may require longer duration, and anytime repetitive stress injuries are involved, treatment might have to continue as long as the patient is participating in the movement that causes the stress (think computer work and arm or neck pain). But after a few sessions, clients generally notice less pain, less stress and better posture, Diebold says. Myofasical release is typically provided by licensed massage therapists, physical therapists and other practitioners licensed to do bodywork. Because no professional governing body certifies myofasical release practitioners, Diebold recommends inquiring about the training. “When looking for a practitioner, find one you feel comfortable with and who has experience in addressing your unique needs and concerns. Word of mouth or a referral from someone you trust is usually a great place to start,” she says. Bennett and Diebold both say myofasial release is a safe, noninvasive and non-pharmacological approach to treating myofasical restrictions and pain. “The goal with this therapy is to help treat the source of pain and help clients feel less pain, less stress, increased range of motion, increased flexibility and improved posture,” Diebold says.

[ the routine ] A great bonus to living at The Fountains is the selection of physical activities offered to residents. I met with one of the exercise counselors who put me on an individualized plan. She showed me how to use the step machines because they were part of my routine previously, and I’m on those two to three times a week. When it’s warmer, I take walks in the courtyard. One of my favorite things to do is swim, so three times a week, I attend water aerobics, where we perform various exercises for balance, strengthening and toning. The water classes are perfect for my back, and I never get short of breath. I also can go swimming whenever I want since the pool is always open.

photo: bill barrett

Phyllis Abrams is happy to report she

is in much better health now than when she arrived at The Fountains a little more than six months ago. “My legs are stronger, my balance is better and I can do a lot more,” she says. “All the exercise, particularly the swimming, has really helped me.” Abrams, who is originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, has lived all over the world due to her husband’s job in the oil business. “After he passed, both my daughters were in St. Louis with their families, so I came here,” she explains. When both children moved, she followed one to Colorado. “It got harder and harder to breathe,” she says. “I was on oxygen all the time and in cardiac rehab.” She returned to St. Louis and chose The Fountains for its large population of independent senior residents and numerous amenities. “The schedule of activities makes it like living on a cruise ship,” she notes. Abrams says she always has been active; swimming and dancing were a big part of her routine when she was younger. “When I lived independently, I didn’t follow through as

well with working out because I had to drive to the gym,” she explains. “Now, everything is right downstairs, so even on a cold day, I can’t make excuses!” She says it’s also helpful to have friends to exercise with and fitness instructors available for guidance. “I’m very impressed with the patience and expertise of the three women they have working with us,” Abrams says. Her main forms of exercise are walking, step machines, water aerobics and swimming. “I loved tai chi when they offered it and will start that again when they put it back on the schedule,” she notes. Abrams says the community truly encourages residents to stay healthy and active. “They hold a lot of contests and tournaments, and while I’m never a medal winner, I participate.” A ‘fit menu’ offers seniors healthier options for dinner, which Abrams says makes it easy to choose tasty, good-for-you meals. “I’m not the most athletic person in the world,” she says. “My workout is much more relaxed than a lot of other residents here, but it suits me and it’s working!”

cover story

at-home luxury immerse by stephanie zeilenga

Close your eyes and imagine your dream bathroom. Does it have a steam shower? A

free-standing tub? Or is a shower with built-in aromatherapy more your style? More than ever, bathrooms are a focal point for homeowners, and little luxuries, from a sleek faucet to a towel warmer, can make all the difference in designing a calm, soothing spot to relax in. But luxury doesn’t have to come with a high price tag, says Leigh Suffian, partner at Immerse, a plumbing supply studio that’s been showcasing the top kitchen and bath brands since 2011. “Years ago, there were six choices in toilets, but now bathrooms have gotten really sexy,” she says. “And luxury, which means something different to everyone, now is available at every price point.” An offshoot of Atlas Supply Company, which the Suffian family has run since 1937, Immerse features a gallery-style showroom specifically designed so homeowners, designers and builders can touch, feel and see what the full range of bath and kitchen decor looks like. “We have a lot of experiential things, such as a working shower with 35 different shower heads and working saunas and tubs,” Suffian says. “We wanted customers to be able to live the experience and see what things actually look like and how they work. It takes the guesswork out of it.” Immerse built its business on offering product lines and designers not found elsewhere in St. Louis, and the showroom’s displays are constantly changing, Suffian says. “We were able to create from the ground up what we wanted our showroom to feature, and I travel all the time to different cities and showrooms to find out what’s new with the brands we have and to discover new brands we want to bring to the area,” she explains. “Our showroom looks fancy, but we have things at all price points, and the at-home luxury you see online and on HGTV now is attainable. If you go to a hotel and see fog-free mirrors, a light-up makeup mirror or a towel warmer—you really can do that in your home. There are tons of little things you can do to make it feel like a sanctuary.” Although Immerse is open to the public as a showroom, it sells exclusively to designers, builders, plumbers and other professionals in the industry. This doesn’t mean that homeowners can’t come in and get ideas, though. “We sell to the professional the homeowner is working with, but you can come and take a look at what we have, and we can help you hone in on what look you want for the space,” Suffian says. “We’d help point you to options that could work for your room. For example, many homeowners might not realize that they don’t need a huge space for steam showers—we now can do those in tiny spaces.” 10380 P age I ndustrIal B oulevard s aInt l ouIs 63132 | 314.426.6262 ellenkurtzInterIors . com

GOOD Design is Collaborative

GOOD Design Supports Sustainability

With the collaborative approach, designers are involved from the inception in crafting design solutions that work to deliver results that are socially, economically and environmentally beneficial for the client. In traditional design, the architect completes his portion of the project, then hands it off to the mechanical engineer, then to the electrical engineer, and then to the designer and finally to the contractor. So common goals or cost savings are not always realized or shared. Today’s interior designers advocate an integrated design approach where all team members share their expertise throughout the process. Thus, refined, cohesive solutions evolve and amazing results can be achieved.

ASID designers are committed to Clinton’s Global Initiative and are working to create cleaner, greener, healthier and more sustainable environments for you and generations to come. We choose to use low-VOC paints and natural, renewable, locally harvested or low-impact materials and resources. We appreciate waterefficient plumbing fixtures that work. We are knowledgeable about ENERGY STAR appliances, low energy consumption LED and other lighting solutions. We desire to rehab, renovate and restore where economically plausible, and to reduce or reuse salvaged materials whenever possible. Land and habitat conservation, reduced energy and water consumption, reduced light, air and soil pollution are part of our manta and inspire innovative design of interiors and furnishings.

homework] Dear Homework,

My family and I have lived in our ’20s era Clayton Tudor for decades, and it is beginning to need some exterior maintenance. Could you give us some ‘fresh eyes’ and tell us what you might do to update/freshen the appearance of our home? Sincerely, Ready for a New Look

Dear Ready for a New Look,

After

I really respond to the façade of your home. It always seems to me that architects in the ’20s and ’30s found a wonderful balance that produced beautifully detailed homes that are dignified yet elegant. With your home, I would be surprised if the windows originally featured shutters, and I would like to remove them. I would also like to change the colors of the house. White painted brick with dark brown trim would have (most likely) been the original scheme for the residence. This change will bring a new crispness to the façade, because of the bold contrast it creates. Next, I would add a striped canvas awning over the French doors to replace some of the detail that removing the shutters subtracted. Beyond this, I think the composition, scale and details of your façade look great. As far as the landscape goes, there is a lot to work with here. I would remove the overgrown evergreen shrub in front of the French doors but leave everything else in place. I also would add a low, horizontal evergreen hedge on both sides of the house. A new, tall evergreen on the left helps balance and frame the façade. Finally, two new ornamental urns filled with accent flowers help underscore the importance of the front door. The effect of these changes gives the property a more stylish, ‘pulled together’ feel that would be a nice gift to a home that has served your family so well. Good luck with your changes. Homework Homework is penned by Paul Doerner, Founding Partner of the Lawrence Group. if you would like your home critiqued, contact us at homework@townandstyle.com.

“When I was a kid, I daydreamed about being a TV journalist like former Miss America Phyllis George, the first woman to interview professional athletes,” recalls St. Louis native Sandra Coburn. With that goal in mind, she majored in English literature and communications at the University of Texas-Austin, and landed a job at the Daily Texan. “But I switched to real estate 16 years ago because I loved houses and I loved helping people—and it was potentially more lucrative than journalism!” She and her husband live in Olivette. Daughter Nicole, 21, is a student at Chelsea College of Art & Design in London.

A family-run business for nearly 50 years, Kodner Gallery is St. Louis’ most trusted name in fine art services.

I LOVE MY JOB I enjoy being an ambassador for St. Louis and communicating the big city/small town aspect that makes us so unique to buyers. A good agent is concerned not only about the client and the sale, but also about the welfare and future of our city. DOWNSIDE Part of premier service is honesty. But it’s very hard to tell someone their home is not worth what they think it is, and to detail everything that must be done in order to sell it. DON’T GET US WRONG Some people think it’s an easy job and agents do very little to earn their commissions. But from strategically pricing homes to timing listings, marketing the home, advertising open houses and more, good agents work tirelessly for their clients. FIRST SALE It was a house in Kirkwood, and making the sale felt phenomenal! BIGGEST SALE A $5 million estate in Ladue. GOOD TIMES I knew I’d hit my stride as an agent when my partner and I cleared more than $14 million without even realizing it, because we were having so much fun. BAD TIMES Every day brings a new challenge. Once when I was the listing agent for a commercial property, a buyer failed to show up for a closing. I took it in stride. EASY DOES IT I handle difficult clients with kindness, determination and a positive attitude. HOW TO SUCCEED To be a top agent, you need motivation, energy, problem-solving skills, an analytical mind and the ability to negotiate. STRESS BUSTERS At the end of a rough day, I exercise, do yoga, get together with good friends or read a good book. I also love to garden and volunteer. A WORD FROM THE WISE I’m always very honest with people who tell me they want to be an agent. If you’re looking for a 9-to-5 job with medical benefits and a steady income right off the bat, real estate is not for you. It takes time to build a solid reputation and a network of referral sources.
