s people begin to ease back into air travel, personal safety is top of mind. Now, more than ever, private aviation is a great option for both personal and business travel. Jet Linx Aviation, a locally focused private jet company, has always prioritized safety, earning the three highest levels of safety ratings in the industry. Now, Jet Linx is adapting to the needs of its client base amid the COVID-19 pandemic by providing a more sanitary environment that gives clients peace of mind to begin traveling again. By using member-only private aviation terminals with smaller staffs and bypassing long security lines, Jet Linx achieves greater social distancing than commercial carriers. “We took a look at every one of the touchpoints where we need to interact with customers, and we asked ourselves, ‘Is this necessary?’” says Tom Buffington, Jet Linx St. Louis Base president.
“
One of the changes the company made is allowing more customers to go directly to the aircraft from their cars, bypassing the terminal altogether. “If they need to come in, we’ve invested in products to make sure the environment is clean,” Buffington says. “Everyone on our staff is wearing Jet Linx-provided masks and practicing social distancing.” Jet Linx is the first and only operator in the worldwide aviation industry to utilize the new BIOPROTECTUs™ System, which encompasses an array of EPA-registered and FDA-compliant technologies that disinfect and provide long-term antimicrobial protection. Two Centers of Excellence of the Global Virus Network proved the system’s antimicrobial formulation kills and provides residual surface protection against SARS-CoV-2 (the coronavirus that causes COVID-19) for longer than six weeks. In addition, Jet Linx has installed BIOPROTECT™ Hand Purifier dispensers in each of its 19 private, clientonly base terminals and now offers BIOPROTECT™ Hand Purifier on its fleet of jet aircraft. between flights and can even make adjustments that ensure the ability to social distance in the air. “For example, if you booked a smaller plane, but you have a few more people than anticipated, we may just complementarily upgrade you to a larger aircraft to be better able to maintain social distance,” says Buffington. With all of these added safety measures, Jet Linx still maintains the highest level of personalized service, catering to its clients’ specific needs and learning their likes and dislikes for a truly customized flight experience. “Our goal is that you never have to ask—we have everything there for you, whether it’s your favorite candy or the kind of nuts you like waiting at your seat,” Buffington says. For those new to private air travel, Jet Linx recently launched its new Affiliate Jet Card Membership, a 90-day private jet travel solution that provides guaranteed availability, guaranteed hourly rates and a guaranteed highest standard of safety. This shortterm jet card is a great option for those in need of an alternative flight solution for necessary travel during this uncertain time.

With another Fourth of July in the rearview mirror, “freedom” looks a bit different for all of us this year: freedom to wear a mask, freedom to stand six feet apart, freedom to socially distance ... just to name a few. And while these new “norms” are anything but normal, the freedoms we have far outweigh the inconveniences. As the fireworks were bursting in air over the St. Louis skyline, I reflected on all I am thankful for and may have taken for granted before now. The ability to explore our beautiful city, read a great book, have extended time with family and friends, and truly stop and enjoy life’s simple pleasures.

If you’re like me, these last few months have been filled with as many laughs as tears. While none of us know what the future truly holds, we still have so many things to be thankful for and probably won’t take them for granted again anytime soon. First and foremost, our health. So as we move forward with life’s new rules, my hope is that you also find the blessings. Whether you are reading this issue in your backyard or lucky enough to be at the beach, I ran across this quote that says it all: “Focus on an ocean of positives, not a puddle of negatives.”

GRAND CENTER INC.
by stephanie wallace WHEN THE PANDEMIC HIT THIS SPRING, we were cut off from many of the cultural
experiences that make St. Louis such a uniquely vibrant city. As things begin to reopen, it’s the perfect time to revisit and re-engage with Grand Center Arts District. The Midtown neighborhood is a destination for artistic experiences of all varieties. It’s the mission of Grand Center Inc., the developer, facilitator and connector for the district, to create an environment where that creative community can thrive. Next year will mark the nonprofit’s 40th anniversary. What started as a real estate organization has evolved to become a support system for culture and the arts in the city. “The district is home to more than 60 organizations,” executive director Rich Simmons says. “This includes internationally renowned institutions like the Contemporary Art Museum and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, but also amazing smaller venues and groups that people may not have discovered yet. There is so much to explore here.” The landscape of the district is constantly changing. Simmons notes that it is currently expanding in every direction. Exciting developments include the new Angad Arts Hotel. “It offers a one-of-a-kind experience that focuses on providing art at every juncture,” he says. Another new addition is The High Low, which is dedicated to the written and spoken word. The two-story building includes a cafe, library, gallery, performance space and workshops. Music lovers can look forward to the opening of The Sovereign, a 1,200-capacity venue. While the neighborhood has a long history as an entertainment and arts district, it has been experiencing a revitalization since the 1980s thanks to Grand Center Inc. and other organizations such as The Fabulous Fox Theatre and St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. “There is a unique blend of buildings, and the area has evolved and been

redeveloped in interesting ways,” Simmons notes. For visitors looking to learn more about its history, he says there are regularly scheduled tours. Presented in partnership with the Missouri Historical Society and led by experienced guides, they explore the rich concentration of cultural and arts-related landmarks in the district. Information can be found on the Grand Center website. To make all the district has to offer even more accessible to visitors, Grand Center Inc. is working on several projects, says Simmons. This summer, a new wayfinding and banner system is being installed, and plans are being developed for street and pedestrian lighting systems in blocks that currently are less trafficked. The organization’s website also is being updated. “It will be easier to learn what’s going on,” he explains. “The site also will help people make the most of their visits. If you have tickets to a show, you can see the great restaurants and bars in the area that you can visit before or after.” Simmons notes that Grand Center Inc. always is looking for volunteers to help with its efforts to engage St. Louis culturally. “Sheltering in place opened a lot of people’s eyes to the importance of art in their lives,” he says. “Grand Center is a jewel of creative diversity in the city. We appreciate the support of the community to make it the best it can be.” &

I’VE WORKED IN CUSTOMER SERVICE and know never to tell any one “calm down,” “you’re overreacting” or “it’s not my fault.” The right approach to a problem is “Let’s get this fixed.” But I also know that sometimes you have to step back and ask, “Am I the problem?” I have an Audi that I leased because it is supposed to be easier to renew your plates. When I received notification mine were due, I knew all I had to do was call the dealership and they would handle the rest. Wrong! I was missing paperwork, which resulted in three calls to the dealership, two long calls to Audi Financial Services and one return phone call saying, “Oops, we forgot to pay your personal property tax, but you’re good now.” But I still needed one more piece of paper. I left five messages and one text chat for the dealership. Silence. Like any rational person, I drove to the dealership where I was encouraged to “calm down.” So I punched the guy in the nose and spent the night in jail. Actually, that’s just what I wanted to do. Instead, I gave him my death stare that works on all children, most adults and animals, but apparently not this sales manager. He handed me off to some young man who said he could help. I haven’t heard from him since.

JULY 15, 2020
My daughter bought her first car, a Volkswagen. The dealership told her they would send her the paperwork to get the license plates. An envelope arrived, as promised, but not everything was included. Instead of letting her handle it, I became unreasonably mad, called the dealership and was transferred to someone who transferred me back to the original person. Being the charmer I am, I said, “Don’t transfer me again.” She said, “I won’t,” and just like that, everything was okay. Within five minutes, she emailed my daughter what she needed. I now must head to the DMV to beg them to renew my plates without all the documents. Town&Style doesn’t bash other businesses, so I can’t name the dealership. But I am telling all of my friends. Since I consider my readers my friends, here is my email address: phannum@townandstyle.com. But the bigger question is—and tell me the truth—am I the problem? Am I the person people want to punch? Oh, and my brothers are not allowed to answer this question.

AGENTS SUZIE WELLS AND AIMEE SIMPSON
THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC INTRODUCED a good deal of uncertainty to many
people’s lives, and businesses have had to make creative adjustments to continue serving their clients well. Even in challenging times, agents Suzie Wells and Aimee Simpson of Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty have maintained a high level of trust and clarity in the process of buying or selling a luxury home. There is plenty of reason for optimism in residential real estate right now, according to Wells and Simpson, who both have more than two decades of experience in the field. Areas of the market are seeing growth, and clients in the central corridor of St. Louis and beyond are continuing to entrust their transactions to the duo. “People want to feel confidence in their agent and broker,” Wells says. “Knowledge and experience also are at the top of their lists, and that’s what we provide. Aimee and I have known each other since 1996 and have been business partners since 2017.” The two joined the Sotheby’s organization last year, and Wells says she and Simpson enjoy being part of a network that is committed to effective practices and strong client relationships. “The company has a large, professional marketing department that keeps on top of technology, trends and digital and print promotion,” she notes. “That expertise was one of our main reasons for joining. We know our clients’ homes will get in front of more people, which is especially important in the current climate.” She adds, “Our central message these days is that buying and selling in a virtual world have never been easier, and strong sales figures are bearing that out. We have not slowed down at all in recent months.” In fact, thanks to strong online interest, a

number of their recent listings have gone under contract even before officially hitting the market. Dielmann statistics show that the company’s median sale price rose from $429,900 in June 2019 to $474,899 in June 2020, and it has more properties under contract than this time last year. Wells and Simpson currently have an average sales price of $1,212,911. Wells adds that they have established protocols for remote client communication and are observing proper safety precautions when in-person meetings are necessary. “We realize that whatever happens in the wider world, the real estate market can’t just go on hold,” she says. “Buyers’ and sellers’ needs still have to be met. We have thought through our processes carefully, and we are committed to writing strong offers and getting homes to the market efficiently. REDEFINING THE WORKPLACE By Julia M. Johnson
AMEREN CORP. “We have diverse facilities across our business, from power plants to distribution centers and offices,” says Mark Lindgren, senior vice president and chief human resources officer for Ameren, which provides electrical and natural gas service in the bi-state region. “We are used to responding in times of crisis, and we have a lot of experience creating policies and mobilizing workforces in difficult periods like this.” Lindgren says Ameren has implemented a number of precautions to keep its 9,000 employees safe. Many office staffers have been working remotely, and shifts at other
sites are being rotated in a way that keeps people from coming into contact with each other. “We also started a policy called ‘One Location,’” he explains. “Each person stays at a single site, whether it’s home, the office or a field project. If it turns out that someone has been exposed to the virus, this plan helps keep others from becoming infected.” He says many crew members have been taking their work vehicles home to minimize transmission risk. Worksite screening and symptom checklists also help ensure that employees stay well. Lindgren says he expects many of the company’s new processes to stay in place indefinitely. “We have a cross-functional team analyzing which ideas have worked well so far and what we should do differently in the future,” he notes.
Some of the region’s largest employers are facing weighty challenges as they retool their work environments to meet COVID-19 guidelines. But how do you keep thousands of people functioning properly in their roles while also protecting their health? With team members returning to offices and field sites, companies must be smart about distancing, sanitizing, reconfiguring workspaces and more. Two of the area’s biggest employers share how they have risen to the occasion.
WORLD WIDE TECHNOLOGY The Maryland Heights-based technology solutions provider has been focusing on safety and flexibility as well. Ann Marr, executive vice president for global human resources, says a remote work strategy is still in place for many of the company’s 6,000 staff members. “We have not yet made a decision regarding moving our employees back to the office,” she says. “However, we’re working with our facilities team to redesign workspaces that will accommodate our future needs.” Marr adds that staff members have responded positively and kept
productivity levels consistent while working remotely. “We have been using virtual meeting technology and providing monitors so employees can work effectively from home,” she says. “We do have some teams working at our sites right now, so we have social distancing protocols throughout those facilities, including meeting rooms and common areas.” According to Marr, the remote work plan won’t be permanent, but the company does intend to be sensitive in addressing staff members’ preferences. Some people working from home have asked to continue doing so indefinitely, and she says the company will try to accommodate them on a case-by-case basis.

Maplewood
What’s on your baggage tags every time you fly in or out of St. Louis Lambert International Airport? Why “STL,” of course. That’s kind of hip, but the airport has always been hip, what with its striking, iconic 1956 arched terminal designed by Minoru Yamasaki. With such futuristic architecture, one might not think our airport has been around all that long, but it just celebrated its centennial. On June 18, 1920, an airfield emerged from farmland in the county when Albert Bond Lambert and the Missouri Aeronautical Society leased 170 acres. Major Lambert
This ain’t your daddy’s bus stop. This one’s for kids … well, in large part. The recent installation at the MetroBus stop in Maplewood features two colorful shelters with artful benches tucked out of the elements. Adjacent to the Citizens National Bank parklet at the southwest corner of Manchester Road and Marshall Avenue, the color scheme is bright and cheery. Between the shelters is “Maplewood” rendered in individual letters on posts. On the reverse side of each letter panel is artwork featuring iconography from in and around Maplewood and throughout the metro, from the Gateway Arch to Route 66. (Although many drivers don’t get their kicks anywhere on Manchester nowadays, it was Route 66 through here.) A dozen multicolored rectangles painted along the sidewalk— reading “HOP,” “WAVE,” “SIT,” “SING,” “SPIN,” “LAUGH”—comprise an interactive play element: a hopscotch game. The graphics were created by Maplewood’s own award-winning painter and mixed media artist Genevieve Esson. Citizens for Modern Transit and AARP completed the so-called Transit Stop Transformation Project in partnership with the City of Maplewood, Citizens National Bank and KABOOM!, a national nonprofit that partners with communities to expand play opportunities for kids. More room for waiting, and access to surrounding green space, are a plus. The overall concept was led by BlackArc Design with input from residents. The project raises awareness about placemaking around transit by enhancing the places people simply pass through en route to a destination. So why so glum, chum? Here, the journey itself becomes an enjoyable part of the experience!
PHOTO: EXPLORE ST. LOUIS
Bridgeton
The Metro paid the rent and had the site cleared, graded and drained, built a hangar at his own expense, then offered free use of the field to anyone wishing to use it. (You may remember from U.S. history class that there was this airmail pilot who flew in and out of there, name of Charles Lindbergh. In 1927, he flew solo from New York City across the Atlantic to Paris. It was kind of a big deal.) The city of St. Louis bought the property in 1928. Fast forward: Its modular design provided for expansion, and in 1959, Lambert became one of the first U.S. airports with jet airline service. It annually has served more than 16 million passengers. The airport recently marked its 100th birthday by unveiling a rendering of a glass artwork honoring Major Lambert by artist Martin Donlin. The piece, set for completion in the fall, will work on several levels: bold images for impact, intricate details that demand closer inspection. It will enhance the airport’s many other permanent and temporary art installations. This is all very nice, of course, but what about this brouhaha about privatization? Well, maybe we’ll get to that in a later issue. But will it affect the quality of your personal experience on the ground or in the air? Will it decrease delays? Um … who knows?

JULY 15, 2020
In these days of seismic cultural shift, it may be time for a few personal disclosures: My great-grandfather was named Christopher Columbus Coats! Honestly. Then, my beloved grandfather was Columbus Stanton Coats, but my grandmother Irene, “Gaga Rene,” just called him Stanton. Well, that covers my family’s association with the murderous man who has been lauded for centuries as the discoverer of America. What’s in a name, though, right? Plenty. They should rename the holiday something like Indigenous Peoples’ Day. But wait, there are more skeletons in my ancestry: Stan wrote a family history, whereupon I learned that a distant relative was none other than Confederate Gen. William Hardee. Maybe this is mitigated by the fact that he wrote a popular infantry manual that was used by both the South and the North during the Civil War? Criminy, he was a blood relative—but that’s a mere accident of birth, right? O.K., that’s not all. I hereby admit that I was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order in the 1970s at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. Their spring formal is called “Old South.” I just found a professional portrait, me dressed in a Confederate infantryman’s uniform and my date in a hoop skirt straight out of Gone with the Wind. I could blame this on my excessive consumption of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer and listening to records by the late Charlie Daniels, such as The South’s Gonna Do It (Again). Yes, I was young and clueless, and the fraternity was the only one of three that gave me a bid. Still, that was a personal decision, as a then-resident of Georgia, to associate myself with the Lost Cause. This leaves me feeling uneasy as an elderly adult, and not just a little confused. Should they have taken down the Columbus statue in Tower Grove Park? I think so. But, what about all the statues of Robert E. Lee and other Confederate generals such as Stonewall Jackson? By all means. First of all, most of them were erected in the early 20th century, during the days of Jim Crow, when lynchings were common, although the Confederacy had lost a war over slavery a half-century before that. Now it’s 155 years hence! It’s up to each of us to effect change and condemn racism—whether on Portland Place or in Forest Park, NYC’s Central Park or D.C.’s Lafayette Square … in your neighborhood or across my street.

LAST ISSUE’S Q&A What was the late Bob Cassilly’s connection to Michelangelo’s Pietà? May the late Bob Cassilly live on long after we’re gone. His public art appears throughout The Lou and elsewhere: From the City Museum to Turtle Park, from bright-red apple seats in and around a Webster Groves park to the tallest darn statue in Texas—at 67 feet, 6 inches, the bronze and Plexiglas giraffe at the Dallas Zoo. He’s also celebrated for heroism: In May 1972, while honeymooning in Rome, Casilly was visiting St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City when Laszlo Toth attacked the Pietà with a hammer, severely damaging Michelangelo’s masterpiece of Mary with Jesus. Cassilly rushed to subdue Toth.

Think carefully about the proposed terms of a divorce settlement
The process of divorcing is often complex and difficult. There are a few things that make this even more challenging. Having numerous assets or having an ex who is not willing to work to come to mutually agreeable terms are two of these. Individuals might not want to think about having to battle things out in court, but it may be necessary if the settlement negotiations are not successful. Negotiating the terms of the divorce requires that both parties in the matter be willing to compromise. In most cases, neither party is going to get everything they want. Being able to think clearly about how various arrangements impact them may
help as they evaluate the potential options. It is usually best to think about what aspects of the end of the marriage they want to focus. For example, they might not care about what happens to the marital home, but they may want to keep their special art collection. In these cases, a strategy can be worked out that increases the chance of that happening. Determining what is truly important to them can also help them to save their energy for those matters. Parties should think about the long-term implications of the settlement. This includes taking a look at how the arrangements will affect their finances in the future. Assets that are costly to keep up might not be ideal when they are trying to survive solely on their own income. Therefore,
it is important to evaluate the possible settlement options to ensure they make informed decisions. STUDENT STANDOUTS by stephanie wallace
SOPHIE MANISCALCO, ST. JOSEPH’S ACADEMY 〉〉 SOPHIE MANISCALCO IS DEDICATED TO PROVING that science and technology aren’t just for boys. The St. Joseph’s Academy student, who will be a senior in the fall, is the co-founder and president of Supergirls Code, a nation-wide organization that empowers girls through coding classes in a supportive environment. She also was recently named to the FIRST Tech Challenge National Dean’s List for her dedication to and involvement in robotics. How did you get involved in coding and robotics? The summer before my freshman year, I did Kode with Klossy, the camp that Karlie Kloss founded. I didn’t have prior experience with programming, but after the two weeks were over, I realized I really loved it. When I started at St. Joe’s, I joined the robotics team.
We created a class that teaches the basics of coding and highlights the importance of women in tech. We started small with just a library class and then one at my grade school. Now, we’ve made our curriculum available online, and there are chapters across the country.
You’ve also written a book about women in tech. What inspired you to start Supergirls Code? A professor at Georgetown University My friend Kailin and I were participating in a approached me about participating in a new charity hackathon, and we noticed that there program, and that’s how my book, Supergirls, were very few other young women there. After started. I developed it in my own time with talking to our friends, we realized that a lot help from the professor, and I got to interview of girls don’t have the opportunity to learn to women working in tech. It’s a cool way to code. Kailin had also participated in Kode with spread word about the amazing achievements Klossy, and we both felt the supportive, all-girl of women in the field, many of which continue environment had made us feel welcomed and to go unrecognized. I realized sharing these encouraged us to pursue programming. We stories is really valuable to helping close the wanted to give other girls the same experience. gender gap.

Why do you think it’s important to support girls’ interest in STEM subjects? My self-confidence increased after I started coding. When programming, you can see everything happening right in front of you. It really shows what you’re capable of and that the possibilities are endless. It helped me find my own path and brought a lot of opportunities. I started working with robotics, participated in hackathons and attended a Teen Vogue summit after writing an essay about women in the field. I want to show other girls that these options are open to them, too. We need to start changing the stereotype that coding and technology are subjects for boys.

MY MESSY M M LIFE
I’VE MISSED YOU ALL! WHAT A WHIRLWIND COUPLE OF
months. While it hasn’t been easy on anyone, parents trying to work from home and hold the house together probably have it the toughest. I wanted to take time this month to highlight words of wisdom from some mom superheroes who are running businesses and raising babies during a pandemic.
WITH KATELYN & THE #CRUMBLYCREW
▶ How has
the coronavirus affected business? In some areas, it has slowed, but it’s picked up in others! One of the very first items we sold when we started our shop in 2012 was a wooden iPad stand. Over the years, sales of that item slowed down but have increased dramatically recently due to all of the video conferencing during the pandemic! As a small business owner, you always have to be flexible and willing to pivot as the market changes. LIZ ROTZ CO-OWNER OF BTR WOODWORKS AND FAMILY BLOGGER AT LIZROTZ.COM ETSY.COM/SHOP/BTRWOODWORKS
▶ What have you learned ?
I feel stronger and like I know so much more about myself. It’s hard to live in uncertainty. I’ve learned to accept so many things about myself, my life and being a mom. Before all this, I was comparing myself to how others did it all. I’ve spent more time praying and really keeping my eyes and ears open for answers. I realize that pre-pandemic, I busied myself through life, work and being a mom. Today, I recognize that pausing to take a breath can be life giving, relieve anxiety and help my relationships. I needed this reminder and am thankful for it. PAOLA MIGET AUTHOR OF THE BIG BOOK OF GLUTEN FREE BAKING AND CREATOR OF STAYGLUTENFREE.COM
▶ What are your tips for working at home with kids?
It’s easy to beat yourself up—which I definitely did in the beginning—but what’s the point? The best thing that I found was an online Facebook group called Miss Megan’s Camp Kindergarten. It’s run by a teacher in the Chicago area who would record “morning meetings” every day during the quarantine. I’m telling you this woman is a true hero. Her daily live stream videos gave us a sense of structure and normalcy and made it so I could have some time to catch up on work. LISA DOLAN

NONPROFIT RANKEN JORDAN PEDIATRIC BRIDGE HOSPITAL FOUNDED: 1941 MISSION: RANKEN JORDAN PEDIATRIC BRIDGE HOSPITAL GIVES KIDS THE BEST CHANGE FOR RECOVERY Tell us about your nonprofit... Ranken Jordan specializes in caring for children and families who face complicated medical diagnoses. As the first pediatric bridge hospital in the nation, Ranken Jordan bridges the gap between the acute care hospital and home. In 1941, hospital founder Mary Ranken Jordan created “Care Beyond the Bedside,” a philosophy that is still an integral part of the care provided today. The 60-bed stateof-the-art facility provides a unique array of services and play opportunities, allowing children to heal through play. A typical day may include petting a therapy dog, enjoying a book in the reading nook, strumming a guitar, painting a picture, playing golf on a six-hole putting green or hitting a home run on a fully accessible outdoor baseball field. The mobile medical equipment allows the child to receive medications wherever they’re receiving therapy, freeing them from their room. The
dining room is communal, so the kids can socialize rather than eat alone in bed. Each child has a specialized team of physicians, all considered experts in their field. Specialties represented include wound care, general pediatrics, internal medicine, physical medicine, rehabilitation, infectious diseases, cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology, pulmonology, neonatology, psychiatry and psychology.
HOW YOU CAN HELP: Ranken Jordan will host the 2020 Annual Tee It Up for the Kids Golf Tournament in memory of Phillip Mull Jr. The tournament will take place on Monday, Aug. 31, at Norwood Hills Country Club. Sponsorship opportunities, donation information and registration for foursomes, can be found at rankenjordan.org/golf. We hope you will join us and contribute to helping kids be kids again!

OFF the cuff w/claiborne carolyn kindle betz
Carolyn Kindle Bet z has two jobs. She’s the president of Enterprise Holdings Foundation, the charitable arm of the organization her grandfather Jack Taylor founded. She’s also co-owner of St . Louis’ new Major League Soccer franchise, the first female-majorit y-owned franchise ever. She opens up about personal st yle and, yes, soccer. HOW ARE THINGS WITH MLS SINCE THE PANDEMIC? We’re moving along, and the team is busy. We’re waiting to see how the post-COVID world will look and what changes we may need to make. The stadium design is still being fine-tuned, and we’re also working on the club colors, crest and team name. Some recruiting is still happening. We have new hires who will add to the excitement of having an MLS franchise in St. Louis. Hopefully, we’ll make some announcements soon. Trust me, we are excited to start sharing some positive news. WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT BEING INVOLVED IN MLS? Everyday, I’m learning something new. Working at Enterprise Holdings for 22 years, I wanted to find new things to do with my career. Moving over to CEO of a sports team was exactly in my wheelhouse. I just like to learn. My days are never boring, which I appreciate. WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE? Anything pink. Honestly, if my friends are out and see a pink hat, they’ll buy it for me. It’s become my favorite color. It makes me feel happy and sassy, so I have a lot of pink. WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO OUTFIT FOR AN EVENT OR APPEARANCE? I’M GUESSING IT STARTS WITH PINK. It does! It’s a pink shirt and white jeans. But I’ve also gotten into the dress and sneaker look. A lot of the events I go to are on pitches and fields, so it’s an excuse not to wear heels. I’ve had to add some sneakers to my shoe collection. YOU WOULDN’ T BE CAUGHT DEAD IN WHAT? A tutu. No one over 40 should be wearing a tutu. WHAT IS THE BEST CAREER ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED, AND WHO DID YOU GET IT FROM? This one’s tough. I’ve had a lot of great bosses. I just remember one, who will remain nameless, told me, “don’t screw this up.” And that that was literally the best advice because he was right. If I screwed up, I’d get fired, right? WHAT ARE THE THREE QUALITIES THAT GOT YOU WHERE YOU ARE TODAY? AND OBVIOUSLY, ONE OF THEM IS THAT YOU DIDN’ T SCREW UP A LOT. Actually, I think it’s because I have an inquisitive mind and ask a lot of questions. I have no problem saying, “I don’t understand. Can we go back?” Honesty is also important, which goes back to not being afraid to admit that I don’t understand or need assistance. Finally, loyalty, because it is so key in being successful. It’s not only being loyal to your customers and employees, but it’s also having them respect you enough to be loyal back. WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL DINING SPOT? It’s going to have to be Sportsman’s Park. DO YOU HAVE A PLAN B? IF SPORTSMAN’S PARK IS TOO CROWDED, WHERE DO YOU GO NEXT? I’d probably go to Olympia Kebob House & Taverna for a gyro. WHEN YOU GO THERE, YOUR DRINK OF CHOICE IS? I have two favorites, but they aren’t at Sportsman’s Park or Olympia. I love Gourmet to Go’s Arnold Palmer and the Negroni you can get at the Niche Food Group restaurants. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ACTIVITIES, ASIDE FROM SOCCER? AND DID YOU EVER PLAY, OR HAVE YOU ALWAYS ENJOYED FROM A DISTANCE? I never played, but it’s been fun to get to understand the soccer world. I love playing golf with my husband, family and friends. DO YOU LET YOUR HUSBAND WIN FROM TIME TO TIME JUST TO KEEP HARMONY IN THE FAMILY? Well, my husband is a professional golf teacher, so I think the question is whether he lets me win. BOOKS OR MOVIES? I’m a big fan of Disney movies. The Lion King is probably my favorite. And for books, I’ve been reading a lot about soccer and enjoying John Grisham recently. I’m always up for new suggestions. I like books that captivate me. I’m not someone who starts a book and stays up until 3 a.m. to finish it. I read a lot on vacation.

1. What appeals to me about fashion: Research on the psychology of clothing says it does make an impact on how you feel about yourself and your mindset. I also love discovering new brands—these days there are a lot of people producing really cool and interesting things.

2. My wardrobe staples: My power piece is a high-waisted pant fitted at the waist—these can be jeans, chinos or a straight pant. They can also be of any color—I’m wearing camo right now. I usually pair that with a tighter top, such as a turtleneck layered underneath a cool blazer or jacket. I also like to stack rings on my right hand. These are typically gold. And I’m almost always in a shoe with a heel. 3. My favorite designers: I love Lingua Franca’s hand-stitched designs. I’m also obsessed with Sarah Flint shoes—they incorporate features like arch support and extra padding on the foot of high heels to make them as comfortable as they are beautiful. For basics, I’m really psyched about everything Everlane is doing. Finally, my favorite bag of all time is the L.L. Bean Boat and Tote. It’s not super glamorous, but it’s so functional, and I get compliments on it frequently. 4. My favorite looks: I embrace dressing differently every single day, and I tend not to fall into any kind of comfort groove. I like to walk into my closet, mix things up, and if it feels right, I own it and walk out the door. One look I love is a loud, bright matching set. I also love to throw on my vintage swing coat. It’s floral and looks like a piece of upholstery from the ‘70s. Every time I wear it, I’m not only expressing myself, but also end up in conversations with people. It’s fun, and there’s some humanity in fostering that connection.

LAURA KATHERINE SAWYIER APPROACHES
her work as a personal and wardrobe stylist as a way to help women in St. Louis, New York City and beyond not only refine their style, but also improve their lives—she believes that the right clothing can change everything, giving the wearer confidence and a powerful means of self-expression. She also brings unique female designers to audiences in St. Louis and New York through her Salon x LKS event series, which is part panel conversation, part social outing and part shopping pop-up. The events are free but also often include a charitable component. For more information, visit salonxlks.com.
5. My beauty routine: I’ve been taking Beauty Glow supplements for hair, nails and skin by EVOLUTION_18, Bobbi Brown’s wellness company. Every morning I wash my face and apply toner and a light cream, followed by a lip gel from Patchology or Bite. At night, I wash my face and apply First Aid Beauty’s Ultra Repair cream and Sunday Riley’s Autocorrect eye cream.

6. Favorite places to shop: Locally I love Byrd Designer Consignment in Ladue. I also love shopping online at The RealReal, another consignment shop. Resale and consignment are blowing up right now for all the right reasons. 7. Favorite places to eat in St. Louis: I love Vicia, Billie Jean and Louie. My husband and I spend a lot of time at each one. 8. Where you can find me on weekends: I’m a member of the Four Seasons gym, so I’m often there taking advantage of the spa and jacuzzi. I also love the Saint Louis Art Museum—my husband and I go on day dates at the restaurant there or will just walk around. Traveling is a huge part of our lives as well.

COVER STORY
CENTER OF CARING SSM HEALTH SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
by julia m. johnson DRIVING DOWN GRAND BOULEVARD in Midtown, you can’t help noticing the
sparkling medical complex that has been rising from a construction site over the last couple of years. The new, $550 million SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital is on track for a September grand opening, and it’s generating palpable excitement as well as attractive opportunities for medical professionals. The 802,000-square-foot replacement hospital and ambulatory care center represent the latest chapter in the history of a medical campus that has expertly cared for patients for more than eight decades. Staffed by SLUCare physicians, the new facility also is a Level 1 trauma center and a teaching hospital for Saint Louis University’s medical and nursing schools. Chief nursing officer Lisa Hoyle says the medical center has begun the process of hiring 200 nurses, and it promises to be a dynamic and fulfilling place for them to work. “An academic medical center can offer its staff tremendous learning experiences, and this hospital is a faith-based organization truly driven by its mission of caring,” she says. “When you combine all of these things with state-of-the-art technology and staff commitment, it creates an opportunity that nurses shouldn’t pass up.” The complex was designed with direct input from staff and patients, according to Jennifer Garnica, administrative director of nursing operations. She says more than 400 employees participated in group sessions to offer ideas about the working environment, and former patients were asked for their input as well. “Our staff members compared the old hospital to their ideal workspaces and suggested how to integrate tools and devices to make their jobs easier and more efficient,” she says. That’s a key point for recruitment, as it demonstrates the hospital’s commitment to a person-centered workplace. “Making our nurses’ jobs easier directly benefits the patient, too,” Garnica says. “When their workflow is more efficient, they can spend more time at the bedside caring for people.”
THE NEW SSM HEALTH SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL PHOTO COURTESY OF SSM HEALTH
She offers the example of an ICU nurse who normally would have to round up staff members to help situate a patient in bed. In comparison, at the new hospital, the nurse will be able to use in-room lift equipment to move the patient quickly and safely. Everything about the new facility is designed with evolving technology in mind, including electronic whiteboards that patients can use to order a meal, watch Netflix or summon a nurse. “We also added RFID (radiofrequency identification) technology to staff ID badges so patients know who is caring for them at all times,” Garnica says. “As soon as an employee enters the room, his or her name pops up on the whiteboard.” She says watching the new hospital evolve from architectural drawings to actual buildings has been an amazing experience. “Each week when I’ve come in to work, it has been striking to notice how much progress has been made,” she notes. “Everyone here is almost giddy with excitement about the September opening. It will be like moving into a beautiful new home that we helped create.” &

GETTING real WITH FOOD
PHOTO: ELIZABETH WISEMAN
by alaina hinkle
Dinner that has less than 10 steps but guarantees people will come back for seconds? Yes, this is it! We may not be going to as many barbecues and summer parties as we did last year, but that doesn’t mean we can’t bring a festive summer spirit to our own backyards. This simple, easy and delicious recipe has all the flavors of the season and lots of hands-off time. Get ready to kick your feet up on the patio or throw around a ball with the kids, because this is sure to be a recipe on repeat.
BBQ CHICKEN MEATBALL SLIDERS MAKES 12 MEATBALL SLIDERS PREP + COOK TIME: 65 MINUTES
*
350°
Use gluten-free bun of choice and bread crumbs Use a dairy-free sliced cheese you love
1 ½ LBS. GROUND CHICKEN THIGHS 1 TSP ONION FLAKES ½ TSP SALT ½ TSP PAPRIKA ¼ TSP CHILI POWDER ¼ TSP PEPPER 2 CLOVES GARLIC, MINCED 1 TSP DRIED PARSLEY
7 LARGE SLICES PROVOLONE CHEESE 2 TBSP OLIVE OIL 32 OZ. BARBECUE SAUCE OF CHOICE SESAME SEEDS
Directions: 1. In a large bowl, add ground chicken thighs, onion flakes, salt, paprika, chili powder, pepper, garlic, parsley, bread crumbs and eggs. Using a spatula, fold until the mixture is thoroughly combined.
4. Once the meatballs are seared on both sides, reduce the heat to low-medium. Add barbecue sauce so it covers the tops of the meatballs. Let simmer on low for 30 minutes.
2. Spray a 9 x 12 baking sheet with olive oil. Using a large serrated knife, cut down the middle of the connected slider buns to separate the tops and bottoms, leaving the tops connected to one another and the bottoms as well. Place the bottom layer of the buns in the baking sheet. 3. In a 5-quart saute pan, add olive oil. Heat on stovetop over medium heat for 1 minute. Form the meat mixture into 12 meatballs (use an ice cream scooper to make this step so much easier! It is a game changer). Place them into the saute pan—they can be snug but should not be touching. Sear each side for 4 minutes.
¾ C BREAD CRUMBS 2 EGGS 12 MINI SLIDER BUNS
(PREFERABLY CONNECTED IN AN ARRAY)
5. Using tongs, place 1 meatball in the middle of each of the mini sliders on the baking sheet. Take a spoon and drizzle more barbecue sauce from the pan over the meatballs. Top with provolone followed by the tops of the mini slider buns. 6. Cover the baking sheet with aluminum foil and bake for 5 minutes. Take out of the oven, remove the aluminum , spray the tops of the buns with olive oil and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Place back in the oven uncovered for an additional 10 minutes.

COVID-19 HAS CREATED NO-PLAY ANXIETY AMONG THE BRIDGE COMMUNITY. Many

The term refers to the natural process when women’s ovaries stop producing estrogen and progesterone, ending the menstrual cycle. “Menopause is officially diagnosed when you’ve gone a year with no periods,” Lynn explains. “However, since there is a natural, gradual decline in hormone production, symptoms often can begin occurring several years before the last period, and they can continue several after.”
t u o b A k Let’s Tal BY STEPHANIE WALLACE
OFTEN REFERRED TO AS “THE CHANGE,” MENOPAUSE CAN SEEM DAUNTING AND MYSTERIOUS. AND WHILE IT IS PRIVATE AND PERSONAL FOR EVERY WOMAN, IT’S ALSO A SUBJECT WE NEED TO BE UNAFRAID TO DEMYSTIFY. WITH THAT IN MIND, T&S TALKED WITH DR. BECKY LYNN, OWNER OF EVORA, A CONCIERGE GYNECOLOGICAL PRACTICE, AND A MENOPAUSE AND SEXUAL MEDICINE SPECIALIST.
When do most women go through menopause? In the United States, the average age is 51. Why do some women experience it sooner? Early menopause refers to when women go through the process before 45. If a woman’s menstrual cycle ends before she turns 40, Lynn says it’s important to see a physician because it could be related to other health issues. “The No. 1 factor is genetics,” she explains. “It definitely matters when your mother went through menopause, and studies have shown that race also can be a factor.” She adds that certain medical conditions, cancer treatments and lifestyle choices like smoking also can have an impact. What is perimenopause? It’s the transition period that begins when women’s ovaries gradually start to produce less hormones, usually four to ten years before menopause. Lynn says it’s most common in women in their 40s. “It’s all related to a decline in estrogen, so symptoms can be very similar to menopause,” she explains.“The most common symptom is irregular periods. Women’s menstrual cycles can go a little haywire. They may have more frequent flow or skip months all together.”

symptoms & treatment
As a natural process, menopause is not a condition that can be cured, but Lynn says the physical symptoms can be treated individually.
HOT FLASHES AND NIGHT SWEATS: “They are not dangerous, so if you aren’t bothered by them, you don’t need to seek intervention,” Lynn says. “They can be treated with hormones, which also can help with bone health and preventing osteoporosis and keeping skin soft. That said, there are different risks associated with each hormone therapy, so it’s important to have an in-depth conversation with your physician.” Antidepressants also can be used to treat hot flashes, and a new non-hormonal medication is expected to be released in the near future.
LOW LIBIDO: “This is partly because menopausal women have lower testosterone levels, but it’s a complex issue that is not due to just one thing,” Lynn says. Treatment can take many forms, including looking at factors like mental health and the state of personal relationships. While there are medications on the market for women’s libidos, Lynn points out that they are approved only for pre-menopausal women.
VAGINAL DRYNESS: This can also impact womens’ libidos because it leads to painful intercouse. “Dryness is a symptom that may occur up to five years after the last period, and many women don’t connect it to menopause,” Lynn explains. “The best treatment is a low dose of vaginal hormones. They are minimally absorbed into the bloodstream, so they don’t increase risk for breast cancer, blood clots or cardiovascular disease, and they are very helpful to maintaining vaginal and urinary health.”
The FUTURE of MEDICINE begins September 1, 2020
WEIGHT GAIN:
Like a lower libido, menopausal weight gain can be caused by a variety of factors, including a slower metabolism and increased insulin resistance. “Your body has to pump out more insulin to get glucose into cells, and that signals it to deposit fat,” Lynn says, adding that the lack of estrogen also changes where fat is distributed. “Instead of going to the breasts, hips and buttocks, it’s more in the belly, like how men gain weight.” While hormone therapy can help with the problem, Lynn notes that it needs to be part of a weight loss management plan that includes a healthy diet and exercise.
MOOD SWINGS, DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY:
Maintaining mental health is important. “During menopause, there are usually a lot of other stressors in women’s lives,” Lynn says. “They may have financial concerns about retirement, be caring for elderly parents or be coping with adult children leaving home.”
SHORT-TERM MEMORY LOSS:
“A lot of my patients are worried about the brain fog they experience,” Lynn notes. “The best way to combat this is to exercise your mind.” She suggests doing activities like crossword puzzles or learning a foreign language to keep mentally active and engaged. &

Are Your Lips K yssable? BY JULIA M. JOHNSON
A STUNNING SMILE, A SEXY POUT AND SENSUAL KISSES ALL COME FROM FULL, LUSCIOUS LIPS.
When a new infection like COVID-19 enters the population, it takes time for medical professionals and scientists to understand how it spreads and how to fight it. Since the pandemic began, researchers have been studying the virus’s unique characteristics so it can be prevented and treated more effectively. Dr. Andrew Janowski, an infectious disease specialist at Washington University School of Medicine, says the medical community’s knowledge of the condition will continue to evolve in the coming months.

Although the virus is mostly transmitted through the air, there still is some risk of spreading it by contacting surfaces and then touching your face, Janowski explains. “We don’t yet have good studies saying where it’s most likely to enter the body, but we know it can do so through any mucous membrane, including those in the eyes, nose and mouth,” he says. “You are at higher risk of getting the virus from respiratory droplets than from a surface.” Janowski says face masks will continue to be an important precaution, and clear plastic face shields may be next on the list of protocols. “Some places like restaurants and hair salons are using shields, and if we get more evidence that they are effective, they may start being recommended,” he notes. “For now, N95 masks are the best protection, but people who don’t have access to them should continue wearing cloth masks. If you have been exposed, you are less likely to spread the virus when wearing a mask.”

“There has been recent data to support that the primary way people get COVID-19 is by close contact with infected people spreading respiratory droplets and secretions through the air, especially inside the six-foot range,” Janowski says. “And it isn’t just from coughing or sneezing; it can be through talking or even singing. We’ve heard about people getting sick after a choir practice, for example, even though distancing precautions were observed.”
Local research is helping to increase understanding of COVID-19, according to Janowski. “At Washington University, we are looking at transfusing plasma from previously infected people into those who are currently sick,” he says. “We think antibodies in the donated blood may provide benefits to an acutely ill person. We also are looking at what parts of the virus could be used in a new vaccine. Developing a new vaccine is very complex; it has to be safe as well as effective, so the process takes time. One of the biggest challenges is that the antibodies may end up not being protective, and they even may hinder the immune system in some ways. This has happened during the development of other vaccines.” Tracking disease data also has resulted in some interesting findings, Janowski notes. “Since the shutdown began, we have followed the incidence of other viral infections like colds and flu, and we have seen those almost disappear,” he says. “This suggests that social distancing and other safety measures are effective. With that said, we still are seeing a resurgence of COVID-19 because of public gatherings and events, so using the right precautions continues to be very important.” &

from the homeowners » Owner Jessica Gilmore says this 130-year-old Kirkwood property combines the style elements of a traditional home with the conveniences of a modern one. “My husband, Cliff, and I bought it just after we were married,” she says. “We wanted to start a family, and this area has wonderful schools and neighborhoods. When we first saw the home, it was in the midst of a complete interior rehab with all new electrical wiring, plumbing, fixtures and more. We like to describe it as a new house inside an older one.”
Do you know the home’s history? When we bought it we were given a document saying that some of its features were built with repurposed wood from the 1904 World’s Fair. The original owners were the Bopp family, and the house passed through a few generations before they sold it. Living in the home really gives you the sense that you are part of something special. It has a quintessential Victorian vibe.

amazing, and it’s fun to people-watch as neighbors go by with their kids and dogs. We created a lounge area in that room, and I spent most of my maternity leave in there. What is the neighborhood like? It’s perfect for a family. The neighbors know each other, and everyone looks out for you and your kids. Leaving the area will be bittersweet for us. We are moving to be closer to our daughter’s private school, but we will miss our local friends and all of the great Kirkwood traditions we enjoyed, like the Greentree Festival and Fourth of July parties. The home and neighborhood both have lots of personality, and we want the next owners to enjoy them as much as we have.

HOMEWORK
DEAR HOMEWORK,
We bought a beautiful 1967 ranch home in Creve Coeur this fall. We know it has a lot of potential from the handsome brickwork and new, slate-blend roof, but we would like to upgrade the appearance. The garage (originally a carport), landscaping, shutters and brown wood siding could all use refreshing. Sincerely, —MEANWHILE…BACK AT THE RANCH
DEAR MEANWHILE…BACK AT THE RANCH,
Let’s start with the colors. With terracotta-colored brick, my go-to color is slate green. I would use it on the roof gable, brown siding and columns. Since the windows probably need to stay white, I have kept the new front doors and garage door white to match. The shutters stay hunter green to help blend with the landscape. For the landscape upgrade, I suggest a continuous, curving bed of a variety of grasses in different shapes and colors. An upright evergreen at the middle of the façade and a Japanese maple at the right corner add vertical accents. A row of hornbeams underplanted with an evergreen hedge ornaments the left side of the property. Finishing details include a new custom cupola, a brick pier mailbox and some terracotta-colored plant urns at either side of the garage door … the last of a series that pulls the whole property together. Hope that helps, —HOMEWORK

Dramatic entrance Geraniums
By Julia M. Johnson
Summer may be half over, but it’s not too late to give people a feast for the eyes as
they walk past your home. Garden centers still have container plants for sale, both flowering and nonflowering, and they can make an eye-catching addition to any front doorway. Dave Sherwood, owner of Sherwood’s Forest Nursery in Manchester, says it’s easy to create an attractive look that will last, even if your thumbs aren’t all that green.
Flowering Cabbage
Here are some picture-perfect plants to consider for your entryway: Alberta Spruce
Foxtail Fern
Ferns
“Boston, Kimberly and foxtail ferns are good choices for the front door,” Sherwood explains. “They won’t fade, and they don’t need much pruning or trimming.”
Helianthus
SunBelievable Brown-Eyed Girl is a new variety of helianthus that produces daisy-like yellow flowers with brown centers. “These will carry you through the fall with lots of color,” Sherwood notes. “Other flowering plants like impatiens or petunias may fade in the heat, but helianthus tends to hold up well.”
Sago Palms
“These are the dramatic potted palms you often see in photos of mansions from a century ago,” Sherwood says. “You can bring them inside for interior decoration over the winter.” Sago Palm
Vegetables
Sherwood says ornamental pepper plants, flowering kale and cabbage are striking choices for entryway pots. “They’re not really edible, but they will last through the summer and provide an unusual look,” he notes.
Boxwoods
Boxwood
These tidy shrubs can be pruned in different shapes and look nice in the ground or in containers. “Varieties like Green Mountain are perfect for people who want something low-maintenance that can stay in the same pot all year,” Sherwood says.
Evergreens
Sherwood recommends small evergreens like Alberta spruce for front-door containers. “They have a nice pyramid shape and are very festive,” he notes.
Helianthus
Geraniums
These come in lots of colors, grow well in pots and hold up nicely in changing seasons.
Crepe Myrtle
Small varieties of this many-colored favorite are available for container planting, and Sherwood says they can be transferred to the ground later if desired.
Crepe Myrtle
Whatever green things you pick to perk up the front door, remember to check on them. “Plants on a porch often are shielded from rainfall, so make sure they don’t get too dry, especially in the winter,” Sherwood says. “As soon as there is a 40+ degree day in December or January, give them some water. And if you have plants that can overwinter in outdoor containers, such as boxwoods, be sure to transfer them to pots at least 1.5 times larger than the ones they were grown in. A greater volume of soil in a bigger container will help insulate and protect the roots.” &
