FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK
THE FACES BEHIND THE SCENE
We celebrated a big birthday at our house recently. My husband turned 40—although since my youngest called it 30-10 (pretty logical), that’s what went on the banner the kids painted. We had planned to forgo the usual party and instead take a couple’s trip out of the country, but getting pregnant altered that idea. I will admit that while a foreign getaway would have been incredible, the (mostly) surprise dinner I threw at our house with his closest friends and family was pretty close to perfect. It was an intimate night filled with lots of love—and having a talented private chef and staff take care of everything made it even lovelier! Since Scott had a thing with magic when he was little, I hired an illusionist for a private show, and the T&S family even was represented! A surprise to me, our talented photographer Suzy Gorman was on hand to capture it all through her camera lens. As I glanced around the room at the people in our lives, looked through the photos of Scott growing up and our family today, and heard his friends tell stories from his younger years, I realized how lucky we are, not only to have such love in our lives, but to be healthy and happy. It’s something I desperately try not to take for granted because experience has taught me that tragedy happens unexpectedly, and life isn’t always easy. We get reminded of this every day if we’re paying attention. While reading this issue’s front cover story about the annual Friends of Kids with Cancer fashion show, I thought about the daily struggle and extreme emotional journey it would be to have a sick child … and how amazing it is that we have such caring people in this community to do something about it. Those involved understand that these kids (and their families) need something to look forward to, to make them feel like normal kids—special ones on top of that. So when you’re complaining about your birthday or getting older, remember those who are struggling or unable to celebrate fully. Embrace the gray hair, the new aches and pains, and the bigger number. Enjoy where you are and what got you there!

WHEN YOU’RE YOUNG, the idea of strutting down the runway as a model is the epitome of
glamour. The lights, the audience, the clothing—it’s an experience Friends of Kids with Cancer makes a reality for young cancer patients every year at its Fashion Show & Boutique. As the nonprofit’s signature fundraiser, the event honors its mission to give children and families the support and services they need that medicine alone cannot provide. The fashion show accounts for more than 20 percent of the organization’s programming budget, but executive director Tim Mickelson says the most important aspect is the models. Each year, 30 patients from Mercy, SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital are selected to participate, and they receive the superstar treatment. Along with modeling in afternoon and evening shows, participants receive a special gift bag and get to stay overnight at The Ritz-Carlton with their family. “The show is a day of magic, and the kids are the stars,” Mickelson says. “In the book of their battle with cancer, there are a lot of dark paragraphs and pages, but we give them a truly happy, beautiful chapter.” It’s an experience that is meaningful for the entire family. “Families get to forget about the daily stresses of having a sick child and watch them thrive,” Mickelson says. At last year’s show, he spoke with a woman whose daughter almost wasn’t able to participate due to a relapse. After learning how much the event meant to her, doctors agreed to release her from the hospital for the show. “I watched this young lady walk down the runway and share a look of love with her mother,” Mickelson recalls. “It was a very beautiful moment, and it represents why we do this.” Friends of Kids with Cancer is focused on helping meet the nonmedical needs of the families it serves, and the fashion show is just one part of this mission. The organization also offers programming to help address educational, emotional and recreational concerns. “It’s incredibly important that these children maintain a positive approach and continue looking toward the future,” Mickelson says. He explains that this means helping kids stay on track in school, cope with overwhelming emotions and not forget to have fun. And the nonprofit is expanding to increase its impact. Mickelson says this year alone, its art therapy program has grown three times as large. The nonprofit also is more than doubling the size of its facilities to offer more onsite services, including new therapy rooms that will best serve both children and adults. It hopes to develop additional sibling support programs and services to help survivors with the long-term effects of cancer and treatment. This year’s show will help make more growth possible. The event is Nov. 8 at The Ritz-Carlton, and boutique shopping from local stores and vendors begins at 10 a.m. for the luncheon show and 5:30 p.m. for the dinner show. The first show is emceed by KSDK anchor Anne Allred, and Jim Hayes of Fox Sports will preside over the second. “We’re calling it the ‘Greatest Show’ as a bit of a nod to the fun and wonder we always try to provide,” Mickelson says. “Guests will experience a room absolutely filled with love and magic. It’s a day when the disease disappears for a little while and all of the light shines on the children themselves.” &

SLU〉〉
Looks like someone dumped a heap of plumbing supplies smack in the middle of the expansive grassy area separating the modern Doisy Building and vintage SLU medical school complex. It’s really an abstract sculpture, right across Grand Boulevard from the SSM-SLU Hospital under construction, and a driver stuck in traffic that’s sluggish or stopped altogether can’t help but use his imagination. White Mountains is quite attractive, actually. But mountains ain’t in it. Slightly rectangular, the piece kind of resembles white plateaux to anyone really trying to stretch their imagination. It begged a closer look. Not quite as tall as the average human, it’s nothing like the mess of PVC pipe one may imagine from a distance. It’s steel, painted bright white, and set on an expanse of what appears to be crushed gravel that could have survived some light weeding by the crew responsible for mowing and weed-whacking the otherwise verdant area. The artist is Clark Murray. SLU received the work on a 25-year loan in 2010, and it’s been on display in its current location for about five years. But if you think it doesn’t belong there, don’t try to move it somewhere else. You’ll throw your back out.
CREVE COEUR〉〉
Late last month there was a homemade sign in the grass off the shoulder of Lindbergh Boulevard, right across from Chaminade. White poster board handlettered with permanent marker was secured to a metal frame. It was not as sturdy as those Open House signs real estate agents put up on Sundays, but it was more professional than the sign a kid tapes to a lemonade stand. Those are installed near the action, designed to pull you right in. Few are along one of the metro’s busiest thoroughfares. This one was close to the traffic signal and hard to miss. It read something like, ‘Want to Learn About Real Estate Investing?’ I was flabbergasted. The income demographic for the message was probably about right. Hundreds of entrepreneurial folks probably glanced at it,

some rolling their eyes as they accelerated when the light changed. I’d venture a wealthy real estate investor—like, say, the president—has a bigger ad budget. Some mail postcards to prospects in upscale ZIP codes, inviting them to seminars at the area’s best steakhouses. That can’t be cheap. But this sign sure was. Maybe the advertiser knows something I don’t. Could it be, then, that people really do sell their houses to random strangers who put up handlettered signs offering to buy them in any condition? (Which begs the question: Do you live in your car from then on?) Someone should make an ‘Ocean Liner for Sale’ sign. All you’d need is an ocean liner, an ocean to float it in and a sucker. There’s one born every minute, apparently.
KIRKWOOD〉〉
Space … the final frontier. There’ll soon be excess retail space aplenty throughout the metro and Metro East, unless a buyer expresses interest in 16 orphaned Shop ’n Save discount supermarkets. At about 50,000 square feet apiece, that’s 800,000 square feet, about the size of an airport terminal. (Lambert’s main terminal is approximately 1.1 million square feet; the east terminal, which handles Southwest Airlines, is about 225,000 square feet. That’s more than enough space to stage a fake landing on Mars.) Supervalu, the chain’s Minneapolis-based parent, has unloaded 35 stores
here. More than 1,300 employees got pink slips, although Schnucks will retain union workers at the 19 stores it’s absorbing. Dierbergs, Aldi and Straub’s have said no thank you to the remaining 16. What’s more, the shells are immense, too big for the boutique grocers that have cropped up. So Supervalu plans to close them before Thanksgiving. Schnucks plans to convert it’s new portfolio additions in short order: Each will close just a few days for the changeover. A couple of addresses on Manchester illustrate the quandary for supermarketers. If you blink, you might miss the new Schnucks in downtown Maplewood that used to be Shop ’n Save. Meanwhile, Schnucks in Kirkwood is just east of Lindbergh, less than a quarter-mile from a Shop ’n Save that’s not long for this world. A newish Fresh Thyme is even closer. The discount grocer’s imminent vamoose will leave a huge gap in the streetscape, room enough for a Kmart, Toys ‘R’ Us or maybe even a Venture store. Of course, those big-boxes are no more, save a lone Kmart in Florissant. How about a second IKEA store? A few floors and a multilevel parking garage probably would do the trick. There. Fixed that.
U. CITY〉〉
Who wants to Get LOOPed in U. City this Friday, Oct. 5, during the second self-guided tour of the Delmar Loop’s fun shops, restaurants and much more? You do? Well, c’mon down! Get LOOPed starts at 5 p.m. on the first Friday of the month. This go-round, there will be two ribbon cuttings for new businesses set to open. You may have to be two places at once but, failing that, they’re only a couple doors from one another … so just walk down. Yoga Source will open at 6170 Delmar Blvd. The Baked Bear is the new arrival at 6140 Delmar Blvd. The latter offers a scrumptious spin on the ice cream sandwich: freshly baked cookies, brownies or donuts to sandwich your ice cream. We already know that U. City bills itself as ‘Neighborhood to the World’ … lion-emblazoned signs with that motto welcome you and bid you farewell at the city limits. We just learned another reason: On both sides of Skinker Boulevard are restaurants representing 17 countries. Not into Italian or American tonight? Try Thai. Clarification: This column’s item on recycling in our Sept. 19 issue stated that shredded paper cannot be single-stream recycled. Well, not as such, we have learned. Tiny paper shreds could wind up in pallets of plastic, which could be a deal-breaker. But not if you bag it. Stuff the shreds into a brown paper bag, fold it over and recycle. TT TRIVIA | WHAT WAS THE CORPORATE PARENT OF THE VENTURE BIG-BOX STORES? LAST ISSUE’S ANSWER | BESIDES PERJAX, AT LEAST THREE OTHER RESTAURANTS HAVE CRASHED AND BURNED AT JACKSON AND PERSHING IN U. LIZA FISHBONE & ROBERT FISHBONE
CLAYTON〉〉
ROBERT FISHBONE of Clayton found his first creative
partner in Sarah Linquist, scenery painter at The Muny. Together, they painted murals on buildings all over town, perhaps the most famous being Lindy Squared, a pixelated image of the legendary aviator. (Alas, the building it graced was torn down less than five years later in 1981 ... but it’s set to reappear in the 2020s as part of the Missouri History Museum’s collections.) Sarah passed away in 2010, but her legacy lives on through Robert and his second creative partner—their daughter, LIZA FISHBONE, who paints with her dad when she’s in town. She’s been helping to refresh murals her parents created 20 years or so ago. Robert and Liza just finished their latest mural project, the side of the building at the western entrance of the Cherokee Street district, in June. With a disco ball as the center of interest, it’s vibrant, whimsical … and huge. And a perfect look for STLstyle, the St. Louis-themed custom T-shirt shop owned by twin brothers Jeff and Randy Vines. Robert’s first big project with Liza, the side of the building housing

the KDHX studios in Grand Center, raised eyebrows. It originated with a marketing campaign by Phillips 66—a giant corporation that cozy with a community nonprofit? “As the artists, we got caught in the middle,” says Liza of the 2015 project. “Some people saw it as an advertisement.” She saw their point, but above all, it was a learning experience. “She jumped right into the deep end of the pool,” says Robert, who was working on a restoration near SLU while his daughter took time out from installations for a music festival in her home city of Austin, Texas, to join a threeway phone call with us. “There’s quite a difference in skill levels,” Robert emphasizes, comparing his to Liza’s. “This is so much more than, ‘Can you draw?’ or just imagining your art big.” Liza demurs. “I became really, really good at cleaning brushes,” she says. Her father adds: “And mixing colors!” Liza is a partner in Chalk Riot, for which she draws oft-surreal images with street chalk, many of them anamorphic. The perspective may be altered such that viewers feel they’ll fall through a hole if they get too close. Classic trompe l’oeil. Liza loves being physical with her art, getting dirty and tired and maybe a little sunburned,
all while interacting with observers. She feels public art is vital to society. Museums? Access is only one drawback. “You stand in line, you have to be quiet,” she says. “And who determines what goes in there, what to charge for admission?” &

Quick divorce can lead to future court cases Stange Law Firm, PC When many come to the realization that a divorce is inevitable, many want the pain of it to end as quickly as possible. They don’t want to be in court. They don’t want to prolong the anguish. They just want it to end right away. The sentiments certainly make a lot of sense. It does not make sense to think that any party would want a divorce to go on any longer than it must. The reality, however, is that most family courts are extremely backed up. With divorce rates at about fifty-percent in the country, and out-of-wedlock birth rates at about forty-percent, there are a lot of divorce and paternity cases filed in the family courts. In many jurisdictions, there are a limited number of judges who can hear these cases. With only 365 days in a year, and courts closed on weekend and holidays, it can be hard to have a case heard. This can lead to lots of clients settling quickly just to get the case done. They might not think long and hard about the terms. They might not consider throughly all the ins and outs of
what they are agreeing to get the case done. They also might not consider the long-term impact. They might not even consider all the variables that go into child support and spousal maintenance — and whether the numbers were fairly and accurately calculated. They might just agree to something to get the case done. Unfortunately, this can lead to many parties experiencing disputes after the case is over. These disputes can lead to motions to modify where parties try to change the terms of the original settlement as to custody and parenting time, spousal support and child support. If a party is unable to comply with a court order in terms of child support or spousal support, for example, this can lead to motions for contempt in court. This is where a party tries to enforce a prior court order. Motions to modify and motions for contempt can feel like going through the divorce or paternity case again. It can take a while to have these cases heard. They can cost significant sums in attorney’s fees. In many ways, these cases can cost as much or more as the divorce or paternity case itself. While motions to modify and motions for contempt are not ever completely unavoidable, to the extent a party can avoid it, they should. This is where collaborative divorce can help.
Instead of just getting the case done quick, parties can work hard in the collaborative process to get it done right. Getting it done right can happen through the help of the attorneys who are trained in collaborative practice. It can also happen through the help of professionals like the divorce coach, child custody professional and financial neutral. Through this process, important issues can be thoroughly addressed and considered. The short and the long-term can be considered. Instead of getting the case done quick, the parties can focus on getting it done right. Stange Law Firm, PC limits their practice to family law matters including divorce, child custody, child support, paternity, guardianship, adoption, mediation and other domestic relation matters. Several attorneys at the firm are also trained in collaborative practice. Stange Law Firm, PC gives clients 24/7 access to their case through a secured online case tracker found on the website. They also give their clients their cell phone numbers. Stange Law Firm, PC understands the emotions that can come from a divorce or family law matter. THE INSIDER
I’VE GOT NOTHING FOR YOU THIS WEEK. I actually
was thinking of writing ‘I am not funny!’ enough times to fulfill my 600 words … just like Bart Simpson writes his punishment on the chalkboard. If you’ve never watched The Simpsons, what is wrong with you? Everyone needs a little Marge in their life. That reminds me. Have you seen the viral video a Florida school made regarding its dress code? It features a group of teenage girls dressed in T-shirts and shorts with the song “Bad Girls” playing in the background. They look like every other group of girls you walk by at the mall, but apparently, they are violating the school’s dress code. The students were sent to detention where a teacher wrote on the whiteboard, ‘I will not wear athletic shorts.’ The girls then had to repeat the phrase after her, a chant of sorts. There is not a single boy in the room. The principal apologized for the video; I think he used the term ‘insensitive.’ I would have chosen a different word, but I was not interviewed by the news station. Fortunately, I went to Catholic schools for the first 12 years of my education, and I wore uniforms. Well, to be honest, I wore them for the first eight. My high school had rather loose enforcement. It was important that you wore the skirt, but what you wore with it didn’t matter. Oh, and if you gained a little weight, you just used a rubber band wrapped around the button as a ‘belt’ to hold it in place because no one bought a new uniform. The school had bigger fish to fry, like making sure we were only smoking cigarettes in the smoking lounge and nothing else. (It was the ‘70s folks, don’t judge.) I am perplexed by dress codes because they are nearly always directed toward girls and women. My daughter’s high school, which wasn’t associated with a religion, had one. She couldn’t show her shoulders. I’m assuming it’s because her shoulders were distracting to the boys in her classes. Growing up with four brothers and raising a son myself, aren’t most boys distracted by girls regardless of what they are wearing? Aren’t most girls distracted by boys? Is covering shoulders really going to help? Once you are an adult, no one can tell you what to wear—well, not usually. The normally quiet sport of tennis polices what women can wear. Serena Williams was told by the French Tennis Federation not to wear a certain Nike cat suit. People were outraged, but not Serena. She basically said they have the right to do what they want. I suspect she has been told she can’t do things and then just proves those people wrong. Alizé Cornet received a code violation for removing her shirt at the U.S. Open when she apparently had it on backwards. This rule does not apply to men. The backlash was swift against the umpire. I will leave you with this quote from Scott McNealy, founder of former computer company Sun MicroSystems, when he was asked about his company’s dress code: “Yes, we have a dress code. You have to dress.” I like the simplicity of it, especially since I am writing this in my pajamas.

I’m an organizer and love to have all of my important information easily accessible at any moment. I don’t have a safe deposit box at the bank and getting into my fire box at home isn’t convenient. As executor of my parents' will, I need to be able to easily pull their key information together, too. To have information such as account numbers, passwords and family social security numbers readily available, you have to store it online. There are many ways to do this, but which ones are secure? As I started my research, I reached out to Michael Allbritton, a cybersecurity analyst and lead trainer at Alpine Security. Michael says weak passwords and reusing the same ones are two of the biggest security risks to people on the Internet. He says using a credential manager such as 1Password allows you to mitigate this risk. LastPass is another tool he recommended for protecting passwords and important information. I highly recommend using one of these to keep your passwords secure, create unique combinations for each site and safely share passwords or notes.
I also came across an online tool called LifeSite (lifesitevault.com), which helps you organize important information and reference where the original documents are stored. It provides you with various checklists to ensure you have important information ready in case of a tragic life event such as a home fire, flood or death of a loved one. It even helps you track simple things such as pet care and helps you prepare for a trip. The application allows you to collaborate with family members and your lawyer or accountant. Another feature is a backup contact that notifies someone if you haven’t logged in to the account after a period of time. One thing LifeSite doesn’t seem to do, though, is offer a secure password generator. If you find yourself writing down your passwords in a notebook or sharing account login information via email, your information isn’t secure. It is important to make sure you are prepared when a crisis happens and you need to access your information quickly. Plan ahead and consider one of the abovementioned apps to manage your information securely.
Before you give up driving, come see us.
We can help you see better than you have in years.

St. Louisans’ personal private jet company hile great service is a primary concern among air travelers, safety remains the highest priority. And when it comes to private jet companies, all operators are not created equal. In addition to meeting FAA standards, Jet Linx uses three independent aviation safety audit companies to review its policies, procedures and practices in order to qualify for top safety ratings. “There is a significant investment required for bestin-class safety, and it’s an ever-improving process,” says Jet Linx St. Louis base president Rich Ropp. “You’re always modifying and trying to better it. The FAA standards are just the minimum requirements for safety. You want to be way above that.” ARGUS International is the worldwide leader in performing on-site safety audits for corporate flight departments, charter operators and commercial airlines. Jet Linx earned an ARGUS Platinum Safety Rating, the highest safety rating awarded to an operator. In 2000, the International Business Aviation Council initiated a project to create an industry code of practice for managing the safety, security, efficiency and effectiveness of a business aircraft operator. It developed the International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations (IS-BAO), a recommended code of best practices that has become a globally accepted ‘gold seal’ for business aviation operations attesting to the highest standards in safety

and efficiency. The code consists of three stages, with Stage 3 being the highest. In 2009, Jet Linx earned IS-BAO certification and in 2015, it earned a Stage 3 rating. To further affirm its commitment to safety, the company also continues to be awarded The Wingman Standard from Wyvern, which provides objective assessments and reviews to determine compliance with best industry safety practices. Jet Linx’s safety standards set the company apart, placing it in the top five percent of jet companies in the nation in operations as it relates to safety of flight. Flight crew training is as critical as the equipment itself. “There’s always been risk associated with flight, but we’re in an era when airplanes are built very safely and efficiently and have very long life spans,” Ropp says. “The technology is unlike anything we’ve seen before. Now, the human factor is

the biggest issue. Automation in the cockpit can lead to complacency. If the equipment fails, you have to know how to fly the plane.” Jet Linx requires its crew members to receive flight safety training twice a year to keep the information fresh in their minds. Its pilots also receive initial training on the specific aircraft they will be flying, including ground school on aircraft systems and simulator training. After the training is complete, they must pass a check ride with an FAA flight inspector. With the ultimate safety practices in place, Jet Linx can offer its clients the top-level service they expect from a private jet company through its Jet Card membership program, as well as full aircraft management service for private jet owners. With access to 5,000 different airports, Jet Linx provides nonstop service wherever travelers need to go, including multiple stops in a day, getting them closest to their destination and saving time on ground transportation once they arrive. “I always say it’s the closest thing to a time machine that you’ll find,” Ropp says.

into becoming more successful, well-regarded or thinner for the long haul. One of my favorite clients tried to get her backlogged paperwork under control by repeatedly saying to herself, “You lazy procrastinator! Get going.” That harsh pep talk led her straight to hours of playing Candy Crush and more piles of unprocessed paper. Sometimes, harsh self-criticism can spark a little bit of action. But it doesn’t last. Long term, it drives us into procrastination, avoidance or numbing behaviors (hello wine and Snickers). You might say, “But it’s the truth. I am a procrastinator.” That kind of harsh self-labeling isn’t helpful. Try talking to yourself the same way you’d talk to someone you like and respect. My client started saying to herself, “You can do this. Fifteen minutes at a time.” And she did—paperwork conquered.
Beth: Some people think you have to suffer to improve, but that’s

simply not true. Why not try switching to a different channel, one that doesn’t require harsh suffering? Neuroscience says you actually improve more with positive reinforcement. Try this brilliant tool created by Dr. Kathryn Cramer: Scan, snap, savor. Scan for any and all signs of progress (no matter how little or seemingly insignificant). Snap a mental picture of what you’re doing that’s working. Savor the good thoughts and feelings for two to three seconds. Give yourself some credit, even for little things. You put on sunscreen today? Bravo. Doing this multiple times a day— especially at bedtime—can produce powerful results. My boss claims she’s just giving me feedback, but I feel like I’m getting criticized all of the time. This isn’t the first time someone has told me I’m oversensitive. What can I do?

TV reporter for many years, I got a constant barrage of criticism about everything from my hair to the way I crossed my legs. My default reaction to any feedback (whether it was constructive or destructive) was defensiveness and/or self-loathing. Neither one was very helpful. It’s taken a long time, but learning to pause, even for a few seconds, before reacting to feedback has been really helpful for me. It often gives me a clearer picture of whether the feedback is helpful or something I can just let go.
Beth:
I’m somewhat suspicious when someone gives you their unsolicited criticism and then dismisses your complaint as being overly sensitive. Giving feedback from a place of frustration isn’t productive and is usually shaming. It might be worth it, in a separate conversation, to discuss other ways your boss can make suggestions without diminishing you in the process. The current method isn’t working. I’m betting there is room for both sides to improve in this scenario.

WHAT THREE FINANCIAL SKILLS SHOULD EVERY COLLEGE GRADUATE KNOW AND PRACTICE? For many new graduates, this is the first time they truly will be in charge of their own financial futures. Decisions about their careers, where they’ll live and even lifestyle changes are at the top of their lists. During this uncertain time, many financial mistakes can happen without proper guidance. Here are a few ideas to stay on track: Mind your debt. If you have student loans or credit card balances, make payments on time. Not staying on top of this will lower your credit score, which can lead to higher interest rates or denial if you apply for a home or car loan. Also, landlords may reject your rental applications if they feel you are a credit risk. Start saving and investing immediately, even if only $25 a month. The key is to get your money to double as many times as possible. Turning $25 into $50 may not sound exciting, but it only takes 10 ‘doubles’ to turn it into $25,000. The

higher the rate of return, the faster your money will duplicate itself. A financial adviser can help if you don’t feel confident choosing the appropriate options yourself. Make big purchases wisely. Start off slowly; lots of things will change over the next five to 10 years. For example, you’re probably tired of college apartment sofas, but reconsider buying a full living room set after you land that first wellpaying job. It may not fit in a home you purchase down the road.
If there is a critical financial concept or skill set that has been overlooked outside the curricula of geometry, algebra, calculus and statistics, it’s applied math. This is the concept of incorporating the necessary math and finance skills to navigate through and maximize the earning power of anyone in the workforce. While various degree types and educational levels can provide a reasonable expectation of a salary range, applied math provides the necessary skills to manage and maximize the retention of those earnings, relative to one’s income level, over a period of time. The three financial skills critical for wealth management and retention are:

The ability to budget: It’s not complicated but extremely important. Budgeting is the ability to tell your money where to go rather than wondering where it went. ATTENTION, GAME OF THRONES FANS ... and
anyone who’s ever walked around wearing a pirate hat, carrying a sword or dressed as a court jester: the St. Louis Renaissance Festival is here! Yes, there is such a thing, and it is apparently very popular, considering this is its 20th year. What is Ren Fest? That depends on who you ask, but at its most benign (and it is kept benign, since it closes at 6 p.m.), it’s a time warp back to the days of knights and ladies, wenches and friars, pirates and Robin Hood. While that wasn’t exactly a kinder and gentler time, it was a period that captures the imagination of many, if the array of costumes I saw is any indication. The festival happens every weekend through Oct. 15, with a make-believe world set up in Wentzville’s Rotary Park. Fluttering banners, festooned horses, jousters, pirates and more transform the rolling, wooded grounds into a kind of Sherwood Forest where costumed staffers walk around with wooden tankards (possibly filled with grog) and sporting such accessories as chain mail caps, codpieces and lace-up bustiers. Employees are not the only ones in character; visitors are there in all manner of costume. Once you enter this Renaissance world (for $17 to $20), you may walk the grounds and enjoy a pint or two while trying your hand at archery or barrel tossing. At various times, you can take a seat on bleachers to watch a spirited joust, possibly while gnawing a massive turkey drumstick. Cheering and booing are mandatory, and there is a Falstaffian raggabrash working the crowd to that end. Lest you forget to dress up, or decide at the festival that you want to, no worries: there are blacksmiths, bladesmiths, metalsmiths, tanners, corwainers, etc. In other words, you can buy period gear there. You also can see a sword swallower (one of fewer than 100 in the world) named Molotov, who really does put a 14-inch dagger down his gullet. Or go to the pirate ship to see the Scallywags and their comedy badinage. There are also several madrigal and a cappella groups, as well as storytellers, palm readers and costume contests. In the spirit of the Renaissance, certain weapons are allowed, like swords, dirks, daggers and longbows—but they must be ‘peace-tied’ (whatever that means). I was relieved to learn that at least axes, maces, pikes and halberds (huh?) are not allowed. Arrows can be brought in only by those who are actually competing. You get the picture: This is a fantasy world on steroids that requires an appreciation of weirdness and a spirit of adventure. Given that, wouldn’t it be nice, for just one gore-less day, to turn into Maid Marian, Sansa Stark or the fearless knight Brienne of Tarth?

COVER STORY
CAR FAMILY AUTOHAUS BMW by julia m. johnson YEARS AGO IN A MORE UTILITARIAN AGE, owning a car was a practical
matter, and driving simply got you from point A to point B. Today, however, it’s much more about pleasure, about having an experience that fuels an adrenaline rush. Joe Emerson, general sales manager at Autohaus BMW in Maplewood, says passion for the automotive brand and high-quality service help the dealership create real driving excitement for clients. Emerson points to a number of factors that underpin that commitment. “We stay on the cutting edge of BMW technology, innovation and style,” he says. “Our staff’s extensive training, years of service and dedication to the brand make us different.” Emerson says a number of employees have been with the dealership for two decades or more, and customers appreciate seeing familiar faces when they return for service or to buy a car. “Taking good care of clients is a big part of our recipe,” he adds. “It’s also about taking care of the people who work here. We describe our team like the spokes of a wheel. Everyone is committed to doing their jobs well, in harmony, so the company runs like a well-oiled machine.” Master technicians and highly trained advisers ensure service visits meet the highest standards, and dedicated sales personnel guide clients smoothly through the purchase of a car, says sales manager Todd Cherry. The 57,000-square-foot dealership is remodeling in 2019 to elevate the customer experience even further. “We are giving the interior a fresh, updated look with a restyled waiting area,” Emerson notes. For the convenience of service clients, Autohaus has 75 BMW loaner cars, 30 service bays and a sheltered, three-lane dropoff area. Customers also enjoy the dealership’s BMW boutique, which sells branded merchandise for the motor enthusiast. The shop will expand during the renovation process as well. The dealership is led by general manager Pam Eppers and owned by Peggy Wessel, who took over the business with her mother and sisters when her father passed away
in 1981. “We like to let clients know that our company is owned and managed by women,” Cherry says. “It solidifies an environment where everyone enjoys shopping for a car.” Wessel says the Autohaus staff is excited to roll out new models soon, including the X5, X7 and 8 Series. Autohaus BMW has garnered major recognition for its client commitment, including the BMW President’s Club Award and Center of Excellence Award. According to Emerson, JOE EMERSON AND TODD CHERRY OF AUTOHAUS BMW it is the largest familyownedBMW center in St. Louis, and the only local one to achieve the automaker’s Quality Management Certification. It has been dealerrater.com’s top-ranked Missouri BMW dealership in customer satisfaction four years in a row. The company also owns the award-winning Mini of St. Louis dealership. The BMW store is celebrating 10 years at its current location, an important milestone for any business and one that has been achieved through team effort, according to Cherry. “We are more than a dealership,” he says. “We are a BMW family.” &

CRISPY EDGE
first impression »
There is a special charm with little neighborhood restaurants, reinforced when the owner is there, walking around greeting his guests. That is the case at Crispy Edge, a funky little eatery opened by David Dresner, Wash. U. grad and business major. He says he took a shine to potstickers (that’s where the name comes from) and wanted to try filling them with all kinds of interesting ingredients. Open only on weekends, the fare ranges in flavor, and while the storefront is unremarkable, the inside has character. It’s intimate but not crowded, and the patio out front is inviting.
Wash It Down:
There are plenty of beers and wines by the glass, as well as a handful of craft cocktails. We had the Sinful Cider ($9), a tasty blend of bourbon, cider and lemon. The hearty spirits were well balanced with sweet cider and mouth-puckering lemon.
must try
AZTECA POTSTICKERS ▶
$5.50 Three chia seed dough pockets have a bean filling with Mexican flavors like cilantro and lime and are served with a picante tomato dipping sauce. I enjoyed them, especially the crisp, fried exterior paired with the creaminess of the mashed beans inside.
CHORIZO DATE ▶ $6
This unlikely combination
was my favorite potsticker. The sausage wasn’t too spicy and balanced perfectly with the sweet dates. Nothing jumped out as a dominant flavor, and the dough was ever so subtly tinged with turmeric, another good choice.
From the Sea: sesame ahi and traditional pork stickers with wasabi cucumber, citrus ponzu and katsuobushi
lettuce leaves with a divine, tangy-sweet nuac cham sauce and salty peanuts.
had a smooth texture incongruous with what you think of as buffalo wings.
FOR THE PARTY ▶ $16 COUSCOUS A hearty entree platter of TABOULEH ▶ $4.50
two pork ribs over bacon cheddar mashed potatoes and a trio of buffalo chicken potstickers. The VIETNAMESE SPRING ribs were meaty and ROLL ▶ $8 Don’t miss good, topped with a bit this traditional dish, of barbecue sauce. The which came as chicken potstickers, however, were potstickers wrapped in not my favorite. The filling
With its cool pasta, pickled red onion, mint, parsley and feta, it’s a refreshing complement to the doughy main attraction.
FROM THE SEA ▶
$18 Another entree that was well orchestrated. Ahi
tuna slices came topped with pickled wasabi cucumber salad (also an à la carte offering) and an order of traditional pork potstickers. The assortment of Asian flavors all worked well together, and each element was tasty. The tuna was done correctly (rare), while the cucumber salad was divinely flavored with sugar, vinegar, wasabi and sesame seeds.
TIKKA MASALA ▶ $6
Vegetarian potstickers (plant-based chicken) with delicious Indian flavors like coconut, cashew and cilantro.
APPLE PIE ▶ $2.50
For dessert, get this potsticker with little cubes of apple in a sweet filling. Its house-made bourbon caramel dipping sauce was buttery and creamy— loved it!
overall »
Crispy Edge is an appealing, friendly place, and I liked the creative potstickers for a change of pace. Prices are reasonable, and best of all, it’s got a great vibe.

T
HERE'S A FEARLESS NEW YORK FOODIE known simply as Chef Rossi who spends a good deal of her time catering high-end functions for influential clients. But a chef's tall white cap is not the only hat she wears. Rossi is an author, blogger, radio host, TV personality, entrepreneur ... and lately, the subject of a touring stage production, Raging Skillet, appearing at New Jewish Theatre in Creve Coeur this month. Written by Jacques Lamarre and based on Rossi's company and book of the same name, the play follows her mad journey from rebellious teen to avant-garde culinary icon. It also examines her up-and-down relationship with her late mother, whose cooking repertoire was based on McDonald’s and the microwave. “I love that the dialogue sounds like it is coming straight from my mom's mouth,” Rossi says. “I think she is there when the play is on stage. It kind of gives her back to me.” When she was a pink-haired, punk-rock teenager, Rossi’s Jewish parents sent her to live with a Hasidic congregation in Brooklyn in the hope that it would tame her wild side. “I had really terrible and wonderful experiences there,” she says. “I reconnected with many of the things that are great about being Jewish, and we have worked some of those into the play.” She also spent a childhood summer living with her family in a Florida community where “I don’t think any of the residents had ever met a Jew,” Rossi notes. “Neighbors would show up at our bungalow banging tambourines and say, ‘Jesus loves you anyway.’” Given her colorful past, Rossi says it’s not surprising her success has been driven by a desire to be different. “When I first started catering, I had this awful 1980s name for the business, Parties by Rossi,” she says. “People would call us for boring event food, and I hated that.
I decided the company needed a title that would make them not even call me in the first place! When I switched to Raging Skillet, the tone of the callers quickly changed. Questions became: ‘Can you feed 200 people from a bathtub?’” Now, Rossi revels in creating dishes and desserts that give catering norms a wide berth. “I never inherited the rules of other chefs,” she remarks. “I like to let my kooky background come into play. I enjoy doing pulled barbecue chicken on Ritz crackers or mini waffles for fancy events,
Rossi also has fed political celebs like Bill Clinton. “I created all of this exciting food for him, and it turned out he just wanted pigs in a blanket,” she laughs. “That was before he went vegan.” The chef says she’s been blessed—or cursed—with an inability to lie, which has shaped her business philosophy as well as her personal life. “I once had this wealthy client, one of the first people to own a mobile phone,” she recalls. “She conferenced me on a call with her event planner, who automatically answered, ‘That’s fab!’ to all of her unimaginative ideas. ‘Yes, let’s serve the lamb with the raspberry jelly,’ he gushed. I replied, ‘Sorry, but I can’t do that.’ You could practically hear a 10-car pileup on the other end. ‘That's gross,’ I continued. ‘I could do it, but I’d be very unhappy, and you’d still have to work with me.’ In my business, I find it’s best to be completely honest.” Speaking of truth-telling, Rossi says she loves the play but admits she is glad it didn’t come out while her parents were alive. “I wouldn't have wanted them to see the bad parts,” she says. The production got its start when playwright Lamarre approached her at a book event and said he wanted to put her story on the stage. “A few months later, he emailed me a first draft,” she says. “I hadn’t given him permission to write it, but when I read it, I laughed out loud.” Rossi says she has another book planned and also envisions her unorthodox story as perfect fodder for a TV show. “I think it would be a quirky Jewish cross between Seinfeld and Sex and the City,” she jokes. New Jewish Theatre's production of Raging Skillet is on stage at The J's Wool Studio Theatre Oct. 4 through 21. Sarajane Alverson stars as Chef Rossi.
I NEVER INHERITED THE RULES OF OTHER CHEFS. I LIKE TO LET MY KOOKY BACKGROUND COME INTO PLAY.
or I'll whip up peanut butter and bacon sandwiches.” One of her best-sellers is called Oreo Crack because it's so addictive. “You open the cookies, remove the cream, whip it with peanut butter, put the halves back together, dip in high-quality chocolate and chill,” she explains. “I love to end an evening party with these, passed on silver trays with delicate sprays of orchids: ‘Can I interest you in an Oreo Crack, ma’am?’ It's an excellent conversation starter.” Her all-time favorite catering experience was a VIP bash with The Vagina Monologues playwright Eve Ensler. It featured anatomically correct food served to guests who included Whoopi Goldberg and Susan Sarandon.

DEEP THOUGHTS by patty & janie
AN ENTERTAINING GUIDE TO ENTERTAINMENT
a star is born
A Star Is Born isn’t offering anything new. It’s the third remake of a 1937 film, and there is no shortage of similar stories about a romance between a young performer on the rise and a grizzled showbiz veteran. It’s a story Hollywood likes to tell, but Bradley Cooper (pulling triple duty as director, lead actor and co-writer) creates an engaging experience that draws you in despite the well-worn material. The film’s success is largely thanks to the chemistry between Cooper and co-star Lady Gaga. The first act is essentially an extended meeting between folky rock star Jackson Maine (Cooper) and unknown singer-songwriter Ally (Gaga). There’s an ease to these scenes. He’s world-weary but still passionate; she’s hungry but insecure. With a mumbling drawl and easy charm, there’s a warmth to Jackson that pairs nicely with the prickly fragility Gaga gives Ally. It’s easy to see why these two would fall into each other. Even without knowledge of the previous incarnations, it’s clear where A Star Is Born is going from the beginning. Jackson draws Ally into the spotlight, and while she thrives, his demons (alcohol, drugs and worsening hearing loss) threaten to overtake him. The plot leaves Cooper with the bulk of the dramatic heavy lifting, which he handles deftly, making the almost caricaturistic Jackson feel like a lived-in character. But it’s Gaga who walks away with the most impactful moment. At one of his concerts, Jackson draws a reluctant Ally onto stage with him. Her performance slowly builds, culminating in a triumphant, goosebump-inducing wail, and well, the title says it all.

ozark (season two). Netflix. You need to watch season one if you haven’t already
because season two is amazing. While the pace of the first season was slower, this round, things move quickly as the Byrde family still tries to keep ahead of the drug cartel and act like a normal family living in the Ozarks. The idea that women tend to be gentler and kinder gets blown up along the way. Again, Laura Linney and Jason Bateman are outstanding.

Clayton’s Whitebox Eatery has closed abruptly after about four years in business. The restaurant opened in late summer 2014, and its last day of service was in early September. A sign on the door said the venue had shut down and, beyond that, the owners weren’t commenting. However, former catering director COURTNEY CURTWRIGHT and former general manager JEN SANDERS did say they’ve started a new company called White Box Catering at Coronado Place & Towers, 3701 Lindell Blvd., which will offer the same menu items as the former restaurant.

Health Matters BY RICK STOFF
YOUR HEALTH AFFECTS EVERY ASPECT OF YOUR LIFE, from how you feel to how you function. And while some diagnoses and issues are out of our control, many can be prevented or at least dealt with early enough to allow for a promising recovery. Here, we take a look at three main concerns: HIP REPL ACEMENT, BREAST CANCER AND MIGRAINES.
HIP REPLACEMENT You’ve got to give the baby boomers credit. They’re living longer than previous generations and want to keep the pedal to the metal—even after parts of their bodies’ original equipment have worn out. That never-give-up spirit and the advanced state of joint implants is creating what some medical journals are calling a flood of patients known as ‘bionic boomers.’ “Our baby boomer population is reaching the age where their joints are starting to wear out,” says Dr. Robert Sciortino, an orthopedic surgeon at STL Orthopedics. Hip replacement has become so successful and the materials so much better, people aren’t willing to wait. When I was a resident, we rarely did a hip replacement on someone who wasn’t 65 and retired. Now, people in their 50s don’t want to wait while the prime years of their life are limited by a bad hip.” Sciortino has replaced 750 hips through a procedure called SuperPath, which minimizes incisions and recovery time. “In a traditional replacement, the hip is dislocated,” he says. “The only way to do that is to cut the ligaments, muscles and tendons that hold the hip together. With SuperPath, we work inside the hip joint and don’t have to cut ligaments. Recovery is a lot faster, and people don’t need to follow the same precautions." Most of his patients are between 55 and 65 years old, and the average length of hospital stay following a SuperPath surgery is around one and a half days, Sciortino says. About 100 of his patients went home

Hip replacements in the U.S. MORE THAN DOUBLED FROM 2000 TO 2014, reaching 371,605 annually, according to federal data.
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons tracks replacements handled by 4,755 surgeons at 654 institutions. It reports that hip replacements have a success rate of more than 95 percent, and joints can be expected to LAST MORE THAN 20 YEARS. Nationally, a hip replacement costs an average of $40,000.
HIP FRACTURES IN WOMEN Hip fractures are an unfortunate fact of life in the later years. More than 265,000 older adults fracture a hip each year in the United States. About 25 percent of them die within a year, and most survivors never recover previous functionality. Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine are launching a national study to determine whether women who have broken a hip can benefit from testosterone therapy and exercise. The five-year study will be funded with a $15.6 million grant from the National Institute on Aging of the National Institutes of Health. For the study, 300 women 65 and older who have suffered a broken hip will be treated at one of six medical centers across the country. “After a woman sustains a hip fracture, standard physical therapy often is completed within a few weeks, but many patients still have significant problems with mobility and their ability to perform daily activities,” says Dr. Ellen Binder, the study’s principal investigator and a professor of medicine at Washington University. “Previously, we demonstrated that continuing physical therapy and exercise for six months— especially with the addition of weightlifting exercises— significantly improves strength and the ability to walk and live. In this study, we want to learn whether testosterone supplementation can improve things even more.” FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO VOLUNTEER FOR THE STUDY, CONTACT KELLY MONROE AT 314.273.1160 OR MONROEK@WUSTL.EDU.

YOUR RISK FOR
HEART DISEASE? Heart attacks can come without warning even in a person who appears fit and has never had symptoms. Over a period of years plaque builds up and restricts the flow of blood to the heart. The EARLIER the signs for heart disease are detected the GREATER the chance of PREVENTING a HEART ATTACK.

BREAST HEALTH More than 316,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S. last year. While breast cancer mortality has decreased dramatically in recent decades, it is not clear whether diagnoses have stabilized or continue to increase. The number of breast cancers diagnosed in women younger than 50 actually has increased about 0.2 percent annually over the past two decades, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Several factors confound the statistical analysis: More sophisticated mammogram technology is increasing detection rates; greater awareness of family risks is leading many women to begin mammography at younger ages; and rising
obesity rates may be increasing the occurrence of breast cancer. “The rates of breast cancer in women younger than 45 have been steady over the last 30 years,” says Dr. Julie Margenthaler, a surgeon at Siteman Cancer Center. “There has been a lot of controversy around the appropriate age for starting mammography, and that has caused confusion about screening practices and rates of breast cancer.” Dr. Christina Min, medical oncologist at Mercy Clinic Oncology and Hematology at the David C. Pratt Cancer Center, says while breast cancer is being diagnosed at younger ages, the majority of the patient population is still older.

MAMMOGRAMS “If you are what we call an average-risk woman, meaning you don’t have any significant family history of breast cancer, the general recommendation is to start yearly mammograms at age 40,” Margenthaler says. “If you do have a family history, the recommendation is to undergo a risk assessment evaluation. We determine how high the risk is and whether we should start watching earlier. The general rule of thumb is to start 10 years earlier than the relative’s age at diagnosis.”
Three-dimensional mammography scanners have contributed to improved survival rates. Margenthaler explains that with the previous two-dimensional technology, the breast was condensed as a single image on an X-ray. “With the 3-D mammogram, the breast is still compressed, but the machine generates slices that the radiologist can scroll through at different depths,” she says.
PROBABILITY OF DEVELOPING BREAST CANCER BY AGE
PREVENTION Women can reduce their risk of breast cancer, Min says, but they have to take care of themselves in general. Keep a healthy weight. When you are overweight, fatty cells produce estrogen, which can increase your risk. The American Cancer Society advises limiting yourself to one alcoholic drink a night. If you are taking any kind of hormone replacement, be aware of the risks of increased hormone exposure. If you have family history of breast or ovarian cancer, it should be addressed through screening. Genetic assays can be very helpful.

MIGRAINES Medical science continues to seek better answers to the essential question about migraine headaches: Why me? While much remains to be learned, a new class of medications is promising to bring historic levels of relief. ”The cause of migraines is not well understood,” says Dr. Aninda Acharya, a SLUCare neurologist. “They do run in families, which suggests a genetic basis.”
TRIGGERS AND MEDICATION
an attack. The first line includes over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen, naproxen and acetaminophen. Next are prescription triptans. Generally, narcotic medications are avoided because of the side effects, such as the potential for addiction and lack of long-term efficacy.” If standard treatments do not bring relief, further testing may be recommended, Acharya says. “Occasionally we order an MRI of the brain if something suggests a more serious condition is present.”
&
Migraines have long been linked to wine, still considered one of the significant contributors. “Generally there is a trigger, although it’s not always identified,” Acharya says. “This leads to a cascade of events in the brain, including the release of inflammatory factors. It also is thought that people with migraines have an abnormality in the function of the trigeminal nerve, which is in the painsensing structures of the brain.” The cascade of events remains mysterious, but there are proven means of minimizing one’s risks. “The first intervention is trying to identify triggers,” Acharya says. “Common ones include stress, certain foods, lack of sleep and hunger. I encourage patients to keep a headache diary to record the occurrence of their migraines and possible triggers. If the triggers can be avoided, the patient may not need medication.” Acharya says three categories of medications have been found helpful in preventing migraines: antidepressants, anti-seizure medications and blood pressure medications. “Some studies suggest magnesium and riboflavin can help prevent migraine attacks,” he notes. “If patients continue to have migraines despite preventive measures, there are medications that can help stop
A NEW DRUG Earlier this year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first preventive migraine treatment in a new class of drugs that block the activity of calcitonin gene-related peptide, a molecule that is involved in migraine attacks. This molecule is one of the known keys to migraines, Acharya says. “These molecules irritate pain-sensitive structures in the brain, resulting in a severe headache,” he notes. The new drug, Aimovig, is a monthly self-injection that binds and blocks the CGRP receptor. “Clinical trials have shown a marked reduction of migraines in patients who took this medication when compared to a placebo,” Acharya says. “Three other drugs are in the late stages of development and may be on the market in the coming years.”
THE FACTS About 12 percent of Americans (39 million people) suffer from migraines. Women are three times more likely to suffer from them than men. Migraines are characterized by throbbing head pain associated with nausea, vomiting, and light and noise sensitivity. Preceding the headaches, about 20 percent of patients have an aura, which usually consists of flashing lights or zig-zag lines that distort vision. Nine out of 10 people with migraines report they cannot function normally with them. Nearly three out of 10 require bed rest during an attack. A ’complicated migraine’ can include numbness, tingling, dizziness and confusion.

HOMEWORK
DEAR HOMEWORK,
My funky house has great personality, but it needs help moving past its awkward stage. I bought it after living in the neighborhood for many years because I saw potential. I just can’t figure out how to realize its hidden charm. Sincerely, —AWKWARD TO AWESOME
DEAR AWKWARD TO AWESOME,
Your home does have unique features, including the glassed-in, second-floor porch. I would like to accentuate and tone it down at the same time to create a more coherent presentation. With all of the existing window frames and interior shutters, the porch columns get lost. To re-establish them as the most prominent element of the façade, I suggest painting the porch window frames a dark green. I also would use this color on the ornamental shutters, and then for a pop of color, paint the front door a bright red. Next, change the landscape on the ground line of the house to create a more architectural connection with the columns by planting round boxwoods at their base and connecting them with a bed of Liriope and petunias. Upright evergreens at the corners of the porch frame this main element. On the right side, reduce the plantings to show off the interesting curved wing wall, which helps add length and detail to the composition. Finally, edge the curb with an evergreen hedge to underscore this unique, refined composition. Thanks for asking, —HOMEWORK

FROM THE GARDEN
BEAUTIFUL BULBS 〉〉
®
by p. allen smith
I KNOW A LOT OF MY FELLOW GARDENERS MIGHT BE
feeling like they’re finished for the year. Maybe the summer was especially hot and dry, or rabbits and deer ate more than their fair share of plants. Believe me, I can sympathize. But before you roll up your hose and store your shovels for the season, think about treating your future gardening self to the gift of fresh spring flowers by planting bulbs this fall. It’s a relatively pain-free job that can be made even easier with the help of some classic spring bulb ‘recipes’ and flower combinations. CONTINUED ON P F26

Let’s start with daffodils. As you may know, I’m somewhat of a daffodil connoisseur—or fanatic, if you will—and I think there are many reasons to include this beauty in your spring garden. It’s one of the few bulbs that deer, rabbits and voles won’t eat, and they are extremely easy to grow. And since they come in many different color combinations, heights and bloom times, you have endless planting options. One of my favorites is the heirloom ‘Yellow Cheerfulness’ double daffodil that has been around since the 1930s. It’s a mid-spring bloomer that reaches about 16 inches tall. Plant with blue or purple pansies and/or hyacinth bulbs for a classic color combination. I also am a big fan of large alliums, in part because they can’t help but make a big statement. They always stop traffic, especially when planted in large groups; a single plant or two won’t get the job done. ‘Gladiator’
allium is a favorite, standing 3 to 4 feet tall and blooming in mid- to late spring. Softball-sized, lavender blue flowers persist for an incredibly long time on sturdy stems. Combine the defined circular shape of ‘Gladiator’ blossoms with the soft, ruffled petals of blush pink ‘Angelique’ tulips for interesting contrast. For a tiered effect, complete the grouping with petite ‘Minnow’ daffodils, a 6-inch-tall beauty with creamy white petals and yellow cups. These are fragrant and produce three to five flowers per bulb. I also like the design effect of choosing a flower like tulips and planting different varieties together in the same color palette. The richness of similar tones playing off each other is a sophisticated but easy look to achieve. For example, my Garden Radiance Tulip Collection features two pink and white tulip varieties,
Hakuun and Ollioules. Hakuun is a pure white, midspring bloomer, and Ollioules is a rose-pink tulip edged in white that blooms at the same time. Together, they create a soft pink blanket of color that is easy on the eye. Or, flex your artistic muscles by selecting contrasting colors like orange and purple; ‘Orange Queen’ and ‘Negrita’ are featured tulips in my Contrasting Beauties Tulip Collection. Fall bulb planting is undertaken when the weather and soil have cooled and nighttime temps are regularly in the 40- to 50-degree Fahrenheit range. And don’t be afraid to plant in large groupings. This is a philosophy I take very much to heart at Moss Mountain: Plant big or go home! Think of this final gardening task as a gift to yourself that you’ll receive in the spring. It will give you something to look forward to as winter weather sets in. &
