Post War & Contemporary Art auction
A
group of six sculptures by renowned St. Louis surrealist Ernest Trova are among the highlights in Hindman’s Post War & Contemporary Art auction on December 14. Born in Clayton, Missouri in 1927, Trova lived and worked in St. Louis his entire life, leaving an indelible mark on the city’s art community. His art career had humble beginnings as a decorator and window dresser at the Famous-Barr department store but his star began to rise quickly when he turned 20. That year, the very first work he ever exhibited won first prize in the Missouri Exhibition and was included in an issue of Life magazine shortly thereafter. Soon he was exhibiting his art in the prestigious Pace Gallery and was receiving international attention from some of the most important collectors and institutions in the world. Trova’s most renowned form was The Falling Man, who first appeared in 1964. The series featured an armless male figure in various poses and media meant to illustrate the imperfection of man, perhaps a sleek space-age response to the idealized perfection of Leonardo Da Vinci’s

Vitruvian Man. Hindman’s auction features a dazzling golden toned example from the inception year of the series entitled Study/Falling Man (Walking Man), depicting a life sized version of Trova’s signature subject mid-stride. The 60-inch-tall sculpture is expected to fetch between $20,000 and $30,000 at auction. Among the other standouts in the auction is a sizeable heavily textural pour painting by Larry Poons from the collections of Webster University in St. Louis being sold to benefit the student experience. on canvas is expected to sell for between $40,000 and $60,000. An early expressively gestural charcoal portrait of a woman by British artist Jenny Saville is also expected to draw significant interest and is estimated to sell for between $50,000 and $70,000. Hindman’s Post War & Contemporary Art auction will begin at 10 a.m. CT at its Chicago saleroom on December 14. The auction will feature works by many art luminaries from the 20th and 21st centuries including St. Louis-native Arthur Osver, Ron Gorchov, Pat Steir, Hans Hofmann, Joe Goode, Kenneth Noland, Richard Tuttle, Cost, Viola Frey, Chris Ofili, Paul Reed, Donald Judd, Lois Dodd, Alex Katz, Tom Wesselmann, Gilbert and George and Cecily Brown. Bidding will be available via absentee bid, over the phone, or live on the Digital Bid Room, Hindman’s online and mobile bidding platform. For more information, visit hindmanauctions.com.

STRENGTH & SUPPORT PROVIDENT
PHOTO: TIM PARKER
by julia m. johnson MAINTAINING GOOD MENTAL health can be a delicate balancing act, especially
when major stress-inducing challenges arise. The key is timely access to services that help maintain equilibrium, but it’s not always easy for people to admit when they need that kind of assistance. Staff members at Provident, a behavioral health nonprofit, want the public to know that asking for help is a sign of strength and resilience. Provident offers counseling, crisis intervention, psychiatric care and community services along with advocacy and training programs to help people of all ages achieve better mental health. Board chair Edward Lawlor says the organization’s after-school programs give kids access to important services, and a crisis hotline (314.647.4357) connects people in need with critical assistance. A recent addition to Provident, the Mary Ryder Home, provides a safe haven for vulnerable senior women. “We do our best to locate government and private support, but the most visible part of our annual fundraising is the upcoming Spirit of Provident gala, which will be virtual for the second year in a row,” Lawlor notes. The livestream event is scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 5, with a special focus on recognizing frontline staff members’ efforts during the pandemic. He says there will be an exciting lineup of special guests and activities, and many supporters plan to organize watch parties with friends and family. Holding the event online improves accessibility on two fronts, according to Lawlor. It means more guests can enjoy the gala, and that means wider access to services for people in need. “We realized last year that we were able to reach quite a

few supporters who could not have come to St. Louis for a live event,” he says. There also are cost savings in presenting the gala virtually, so more of the organization’s funding can go toward programs and services. Among Provident’s newest service offerings is its Access Center on Olive Street downtown, which provides an immediate connection to counseling regardless of a person’s ability to pay. Raising funding for this facility will be another key focus of the gala, and in the coming months, the organization also plans to expand existing programs like its mental health services for older adults. “This year has been an important one in behavioral health with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and sports figures and celebrities speaking publicly about their mental health challenges,” Lawlor says. “There is an increased demand for services, and we are expecting our crisis line calls to total between 60,000 and 70,000 this year. We want to emphasize that behavioral health challenges should be top of mind for everyone, as they affect people from all walks of life. The Spirit of Provident gala aims to increase visibility of mental health issues and the services we have available to address them. It’s a subject that needs to be talked about openly so we can rally around those who need help.” &

Interface Construction has had a chain-link fence up around the site of the late, lamented, flagship Pasta House at Delmar and Bonhomme in U. City for months now, much heavy equipment and a porta-potty sitting on the dirt and at the ready for workers. Another new Total Access Urgent Care (TAUC) is to be built on the lot, which has languished with little to no activity since that warm little slice of suburban-style Tuscany closed last November and was razed; a

A lame T-shirt you’ve probably never seen says: “Q: Do you wanna taco ’bout it? Q: No, I donut. It’s nacho problem.” Groan. Dozens of sophomoric spins on this are lurking out on the interwebs, a magical place somewhere up in ‘The Cloud’ you can find with this nifty new electronic doodad called Google. It’s right here on my laptop. What, pray tell, will those I.T. wizards think of next? OK, OK; please excuse me. I’m back to the future now, full analog. I’d slipped into a time warp back to 1995 while searching online for just what the heck is going on with taco joints in the metro. Seems it’s one up, two down at present. Club Taco in Kirkwood may be ‘donut wanna taco ’bout it’ beyond a Facebook post announcing they had to throw in the towel after being unable to renegotiate an acceptable lease. They opened at 200 N. Kirkwood Road in 2016. Taco Circus, a trendy Tex-Mex eatery—read, Austin style—gave up the ghost Nov. 20 at its location on The Hill, open since 2019; no word on their Tower Grove spot. Then there’s Tacos 4 Life, a Conway, Arkansas, taco joint that made its first foray among our river cities by taking over a shuttered Steak ’n Shake location in St. Charles. They’re bona fide, from south of the border—the Show-Me State line, anyhow. Certainly, all is not lost. You should visit Hacienda on Manchester in Rock Hill on a day that isn’t Cinco de Mayo. They have yummy fare beyond frozen margaritas. Lunch business was brisk a few Saturdays ago at Taco Buddha on Pershing in U. City. And 24/7 almost anywhere; just drive thru a Taco Bell. Do I have tacos on the brain? Donut ask. It’s nacho problem.

new Pasta House popped up in January at 8831 Ladue Road. At any rate, a city official says the construction process has been somewhat delayed because of U. City’s need to complete ‘due diligence.’ Just spitballing here, but could TAUC be saturating the market? Interface has built many TAUC clinics in the last several years: One on Page in Overland, near the Home Depot at I-170, was completed post haste. TAUC on North Kirkwood Road due south of the CVS at Manchester seemed to pop up overnight. At least two dozen have opened throughout the metro. To the casual observer, there seem to be about as many TAUC clinics as Starbucks or McDonald’s. (OK; so, a casual observer exaggerates. But only a little.) All that said, it’s got to be better just walking in for emergency medical attention than waiting perhaps hours in a hospital ER. (BJC on Kingshighway in the wee hours of a Saturday? No, thank you very much.) Emergency medicine physician Matt Bruckel, M.D., founded TAUC in 2008, fueled by the belief that there should be an efficient and cost-effective alternative to

It’s not easy to maintain ‘social distance’ at a sporting event or concert. Although two recent shows we saw at The Sheldon were elbow-to-elbow (one sold-out), projected above the stage before showtime was a reminder to keep 6 feet away from everyone else. Ushers approached anyone whose mask did not cover both nose and mouth—still, folks were seated close enough to suffer their neighbors’ halitosis. Proof of vaccination was required before entry, which we assume is de rigueur for most any venue. Judging from the schedules at The Pageant et al., the StL music scene has gradually returned to its robust, pre-plague levels. Which brings us to an exciting new development in Chesterfield Valley: The $150 million Gateway Studios & Production Services (GSPS), a 32-acre campus at 900 Spirit of St. Louis Blvd. broke ground last month. GSPS is projected to be one of the largest production services and rehearsal facilities in the country. Its strategic location, smack in the Midwest’s midsection, will allow for productions to be designed here before moving on. Adjacent to Spirit of St. Louis Airport and I-64, the campus should make arrivals and departures a snap. Gateway Studios, a 330,000-square-foot complex employing 100-plus entertainment veterans, will feature conference and dressing rooms, on-site catering, sound stages, green-screen studios, live streaming, audio, lighting and video manufacturing and production services. Studio 80 will accommodate stadium-size tours, with 52,500 square feet of open space and an additional 50,000 square feet of adjacent support space. Studios 75, 65 and 50 will be able to simultaneously accommodate the development of arena-size tours and incomparable corporate events. The senior leadership team at GSPS has rocked and rolled with big acts including Bon Jovi, Phish, Kenny Chesney, Maroon 5, Drake, Jimmy Buffett, The Eagles, Aerosmith, John Mellencamp, Florida Georgia Line and Prince … as well as the oft-maligned Nickelback. There’ll be a new hotel, a large private courtyard suitable for outdoor entertaining and even a six-lane bowling alley, ‘B. Goode Lanes.’ Visit gsps.com.

LAST ISSUE’S Q&A Chutzpah and mishegas, or mishigas, are favorite Yiddish words of your scribe, a lapsed Protestant. What does it mean? (‘Mishegas,’ not ‘lapsed Protestant,’ although it’s a valid question.) ‘Mishegas’ in this case means ‘all this mess here’ since the water main burst a month ago right at the end of our sidewalk. ‘Chutzpah’ is suitable Yiddish for the action Missouri-American Water has taken on our case since then. Different workers have shown up to spray-paint arcane white, blue, yellow, orange and green markings on the grass, concrete, gravel, dead leaves and dried mud. We still wait. What ‘chutzpah’— oy; have they got nerve! We’re just about ‘meshuggeneh’ around here. Crazy, that is!
TOWN TALK
kirkwood If you looked closely, you might see ink on his fingertips. Mike Kleckner, 34, isn’t offended by being called ‘old school.’ He pores over print newspapers, when many of us, including old-andgrey journalists like this reporter, jump from one virtual headline to the next. In J-school, we were taught to never ‘bury the lead.’ Well, Kleckner’s a digger, and readers of Mike’s Unforgettable St. Louis History, Vol. 1 will be amazed by what he’s discovered by reading front to back, top to bottom, in every metro print publication you can think of and some you may not even know about—including our esteemed metro daily, of course, the RFT, Webster-Kirkwood Times, the long-defunct Globe-Democrat, etc. Kleckner delights in finding that one nugget farther down, maybe past the ‘jump’ to a page deep inside. He’s cozy with the Library of Congress and exults upon exhuming photos that may have been long hidden. He might even be able to explain the Dewey Decimal System. “See that?” asks Kleckner, pointing to ‘Vol. 1’ below the title. “I have enough for volumes 2 and 3 already.” He planned to upload the text and photos to Amazon on or about Cyber Monday for holiday shoppers to order their copy or copies, printed on demand. As readers may know, it’s anything but business as usual in the publishing industry. When a publisher reacted to his project with condescension, it only stiffened his resolve to self-publish. People who’ve loathed having to make cold calls at work will understand how vulnerable he felt, but he led with the chin anyway. It didn’t hurt. St. Louisans as prominent as Peter Raven, director emeritus of Missouri Botanical
Garden, were impressed. “Simply wonderful!” Raven wrote Kleckner after reviewing an advance copy. “In this joyful, well-written tour of the buildings, historic sites and people of St. Louis, Mike Kleckner provides a rich mine of information that will be of interest to every newcomer or resident of our fascinating city. People of any age will enjoy this well-researched book!” With 40 years in newspapers, trade publications and PR under my belt, I learned a lot from Kleckner, CEO of his own marketing communications firm (kleckstl.com) and a magna cum laude grad of Mizzou’s J-School. Whenever he or his mother spot published errors, they gleefully share them. (She majored in journalism at Kent State, natch.) His strange factoids are fascinating. Upon spying a real-estate listing for Fienup Farm, 223 acres in Chesterfield where McBride planned to build as many homes on 1-acre lots, Kleckner researched the late W.G. Fienup. He was astonished. Seems the Pillsbury Doughboy wouldn’t have been possible without Fienup’s invention of the pop-open biscuit can. Arcane? The more obscure, the merrier, Kleckner might say. He didn’t. But he did say: “I could have written a whole book on Chouteau, but I want you to want more.” Besides, Pierre Chouteau has been done to death. To paraphrase another dead guy, Abraham Lincoln: “You can fascinate all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but you can’t fascinate all of the people all of the time.” Kleckner aims to fascinate most of the metro, and soon. EVERY YEAR, I encourage you to use the holidays as a time to enjoy your families by setting aside petty differences and avoiding controversial subjects because family is more important than politics. The pandemic meant most of us weren’t able to celebrate together last year—but some embraced the quieter alternative. This year, I suggest we change things up by combining Festivus with a little bit of chaos. Not familiar with Festivus? It was a holiday made popular by the sitcom Seinfeld that encouraged people to air petty grievances and participate in feats of strengths. Not familiar with chaos? Let me help. To the sibling who asks every year why don’t you make the sweet potatoes with marshmallows on top like mom did: You have several options. Nicely suggest most adults don’t need marshmallows to eat their vegetables, or perhaps, remind them they’ve been coming to your house for 15 years and never once brought the dish themselves or hosted a holiday.
To the conspiracy nut in your family: It is okay; we all have them. As they begin their discussion of QAnon and the reemergence of JFK Jr, tell them you heard Q actually stands for Quentin Tarantino, and messages were embedded in his blockbuster hit Pulp Fiction, but you have to watch it backwards. To the family member who always arrives more than an hour late: Don’t wait, serve dinner on time. When they do arrive, smile and say in your best British accent (the accent makes it sound nicer), “I am sorry, we’ve eaten and have no leftovers. Perhaps, I can stir up some oatmeal for little Timmy.” Don’t worry if they do not have a child named Timmy. With your British accent, anything is acceptable. To the uncle who comes in with his six pack of PBR and wants to know where you keep your top-shelf liquor: I am not belittling PBR—I used to drink 905 quality beer products. For your uncle, I am certain the Fireball or Jack Daniels you confiscated from your kids will hit the spot. No reason to worry he will find the stuff you brought back from Ireland.

To your cousin on the opposite end of the political spectrum who keeps taunting you: March him to your mom and aunt then make him explain what he’s doing. You won’t be the person who says the f-word first this year! And yes, I did just suggest being a tattle-tale! Whenever there is a lull in the conversation: Feel free to sprinkle in political buzzwords or throw one of your nieces under the bus by mentioning to her parents how much you love her tattoo. It doesn’t really exist—you just got confused (AKA fibbed). And finally, for those who host the holidays: Remember it is up to you to say when you have had enough. Get into your PJs, put the kids to bed and turn off the lights. If your family is still sitting around drinking and laughing, remind one of them to lock up. Yes, this holiday season, I’m done trying to be the Waltons! I am going to let my true imperfect, somewhat snarky, self out. I do believe pleasant pandemic Patty has died. So whatever kind of holiday you choose to have, enjoy it! Peace my Peeps.

HAMMER by joan berkman
Q: I am a longtime CEO of a nonprofit and plan to retire in the next six months. As the first CEO of the organization, this will be a major change for our staff, board and supporters. Any tips to ensure a seamless transition for my successor? A: Ideally, the time to begin exit planning—especially for long-term or founding executives—is several years ahead of the retirement date. That said, even if only six months remain, an exit plan is critical for an effective transition for any organization. As chief executive, you basically have three jobs to perform as you move toward retirement: 1. Continue to lead the organization during your transition and pave the way for your successor.
BY CHARLES DICKENS ADAPTED BY MICHAEL WILSON DIRECTED BY HANA S. SHARIF
MAJOR SPONSOR
2. Prepare and adjust yourself to the role of a transitional leader. 3. Prepare the organization for the transition to ensure its sustainability after your departure. Essentially, the exit plan has two tracks, one focused on you as the CEO and the other on the organization. As CEO, the primary focus is to lead the organization, but at the same time as a leader in transition, to allow yourself to evolve as it unfolds and your departure draws closer. For most organizations and CEOs, there is never a perfect time to make a transition. However, if possible, it’s usually better to make one after a known pivotal event. Even then, the tough part is balancing and maintaining a sense of control while encouraging greater engagement of your board and executive team which will include: ➻ Encouraging/guiding the board to step up during the succession/planning process. ➻ Letting the board take charge of the selection of your successor without controlling it. ➻ Supporting the executive management team in assuming more leadership in preparation for its role in onboarding your successor. In addition, you need to assess the readiness of your organization. Ask yourself the following questions about the organization: Is it sustainable following your departure? Has the right successor been chosen, and should you have other possible candidates in the wings? If you are the primary fundraiser, are you leaving the organization with a financial cushion? Other considerations should include whether or not your board has the right leadership in place to carry on following the transition. Are they prepared to be effective partners with your successor or do they micromanage and defer to you? If so, what can you do to shift that prior to the transition? A CEO succession policy is a great tool to get your board and senior management team thinking about the importance of this transition and how to manage it well. The sooner you address the various aspects of your succession plan and develop an effective timeline and sequencing, the smoother the transition will be for all involved and especially for your bottom line.

STUDENT STANDOUTS by stephanie wallace
DEREN PELLEGRINI OF MICDS IN TURKISH, DEREN PELLEGRINI’S FIRST NAME MEANS “UNITING, CONNECTING,” and the MICDS junior lives up to it. Last year, he created stlcuisine.org, a website showcasing 280 ethnic restaurants in the St. Louis area. Along with supporting local businesses during the challenges of the pandemic, his goal is to help the community become more culturally connected. The site is endorsed by the St. Louis Mosaic Project and is included on the nonprofit’s list of international resources. Where did the idea for stlcuisine.org come from? I’m a first generation Turkish American. On a trip to Chicago, my family was dining in a really nice Turkish restaurant. I noticed that the only other people there appeared to be Turkish locals. I thought it was a shame that most people wouldn’t get to experience the food because the restaurant can’t afford to widely advertise itself. It’s the same for a lot of places in St. Louis. I wanted to find a way to help people find restaurants from any nationality so they can go enjoy the food. Why did you pick food as a way to connect people with different cultures? I believe that food tells a unique story about each culture and unites people within the broader community. The success of the immigrant community also is personally important to me. Inclusive prosperity is something that I really believe in. By sharing these restaurants, my goal is to elevate immigrant-owned businesses and make them more visible so they can continue to operate at no additional cost to them. What do you hope to do next? The website is just one of my projects related to inclusivity. I’m also
co-chair of MICDS’ International Council, so I have that platform, which provides me a larger audience through the school. Right now, we’re tutoring refugee students, and I’m looking forward to other initiatives. This spring, we’ll host the International Expo, which is an event where parents and students set up booths to share different cultures. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I’ve played hockey since I was five, and most of the time, you can find me at the rink. I’m the goalie for our varsity ice hockey team. I’m also a Level 3 ice hockey official and have refereed more than 100 youth hockey games. My sister and I volunteer with KEEN (Kids Enjoy Exercise Now) most weekends as well. The nonprofit lets us play sports with kids with disabilities. How is it being both a hockey player and ref? Refereeing has really helped me build my character, and I’ve had some interesting new experiences like people arguing with my calls or parents coming onto the ice. I’m sure it’s the same for a lot of refs. As a player, I like how many different aspects there are to hockey. I think the mentality I’ve developed through the game has helped me with a lot of things in life in general.

THE DIAMOND BAR OFFERS A CURATED SELECTION OF ONE-OF-A-KIND PIECES. PHOTO: BILL BARRET
THE DIAMOND BAR
by stephanie wallace THE HOLIDAY SEASON is a time when the world shines bright, and that sparkle
shouldn’t be limited to just decking the halls or trimming the tree. Whether it’s the perfect gift or a custom engagement or wedding ring, The Diamond Bar in Town and Country has jewelry for every occasion. Owner Chris Phillips is dedicated to providing a shopping experience unlike any other. Phillips studied at a jewelry school in Illinois and handcrafted many of the tools he still uses today. To date, he has created more than 3,500 custom pieces. He enjoys providing clients with one-of-a-kind items of the highest standard. “I always go for brightness and quality over anything else,” he explains. “I would personally rather make less money by using the best materials to deliver an amazing piece than create something that is less than a client originally envisioned.” Thanks to that customer-first approach, he notes creating a custom piece isn’t as expensive as people may imagine. When designing jewelry at The Diamond Bar, people can bring in their own gemstones or choose from the store’s selection of natural diamonds and other stones. When selecting a stone, the store usually provides three to five options that meet the client’s criteria and budget. Phillips notes that with that level of control, it is easier to create something that fits within a certain price range than picking a showroom piece that has already been marked up. “For a big occasion like an engagement or anniversary, you don’t want to be limited to just selecting something out of a case,” he says. “If you’re looking for something special, it never hurts to reach out to someone who has built their career on designing and creating custom pieces.”

After the stone is selected, Phillips listens to the client’s needs to create sketches. Those sketches are then used to develop 3D model in a computer program that creates a wax mold, which is then cast in the metal of the customer’s choosing. Alterations to the design can be made at every step in the process until the piece is cast, so the final product is exactly as desired. When the piece is ready, it is polished and set by Phillips in the shop. “Every step is shown and explained to clients,” he says. “Depending on how complicated the piece is, the process takes anywhere from two to five weeks from start to finish.” Along with its custom services, The Diamond Bar has a selection of more than 850 unique pieces in store, making it the perfect stop for holiday shopping. As they browse, guests also can enjoy the complimentary fully stocked bar, part of Phillips’ unique approach to reimagining the jewelry purchasing process. His goal is to make it less stressful and more enjoyable. “At The Diamond Bar, we love what we do, and people enjoy working with people who are TH E HO LID AY GU ID E excited to help them,” Phillips says. “Our customers come first, and we want to ensure everyone has an amazing experience.” & SPEC IAL SECT ION

WHETHER IT’S A RECIPE THAT’S BEEN PASSED DOWN FOR GENERATIONS or one from a more recent tradition, many of the dishes we serve up during the holidays have special meaning. Those comforting favorites help bring people together and keep the season merry and bright. T&S reached out to local chefs for their favorite recipes to share some holiday joy. Bon appétit!
Fluffiest pancakes ever! A.J. Brown
KNEAD Bakehouse + Provisions Throughout the holiday break, our family enjoys slow mornings and making these pancakes.
SOURDOUGH PANCAKES NIGHT BEFORE INGREDIENTS • 200 g. bread flour • 240 g. milk • 20 g. sourdough starter
DAY OF INGREDIENTS • 12 g. baking powder • 30 g. sugar • 6 g. salt • 2 whole eggs • 60 g. grapeseed oil • Jam • Honey butter
1. Mix the flour, milk and starter the night before. This will begin the levaining process for the fluffiest pancakes ever. 2. The following morning, separate the egg yolk from the whites. Set the whites aside. Mix the egg yolks, sugar, salt, baking powder and grapeseed oil until combined into the batter from the night before. 3. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk the egg whites until stiff peaks and fold into the batter. 4. Scoop onto a greased skillet on medium/high heat. Flip pancakes once they are golden brown, about 60 to 90 seconds. 5. Stack the pancakes high and top with jam and honey butter.
Alec Schingel Winslow’s Table
This soup is perfect for chilly winter nights!
CREAM OF CAULIFLOWER SOUP Gluten free! • 3 large onions, diced • 2 large white cauliflowers, cored and finely sliced
Offer expires December 31st, 2021.
• 8 oz. butter • 1 pint heavy cream • Salt to taste
1. In a large heavy bottomed pot, melt your butter over medium heat. Add the onions and season with a generous amount of salt. Cook, stirring frequently, but try not to color the onions. 2. Once the onions have released some of their natural liquids and are about half cooked, add the cauliflower and season again. Continue cooking the cauliflower and onions until they are completely tender, there should be some liquid in the pot released from the veggies. Take your time, this process should take 20 to 30 minutes. 3. Add heavy cream and one quart of water. Increase the heat and simmer for another 20 minutes. 4. Use a high powered blender to puree the soup. For a very smooth texture, pass it through a chinois or fine mesh strainer. Don’t forget to taste and add more salt if necessary.

Mission Taco Joint
A new spin on sweet potatoes!
This is a side dish I came up with as a special at Milagro. I like it because it’s a savory dish that has a little spice, smoke and sweetness with a nice tang from the goat cheese.
SMOKY SWEET POTATO GRATIN Oven: 375° • 3 sweet potatoes • 1 c. goat cheese • 2 c. cream • 1 tbsp. salt
• ¼ c. chipotle purée • 2 tbsp. smoked paprika • 1 c. Panko bread crumbs • ⅛ c. melted butter
1. Peel the sweet potatoes and slice into ⅛ inch slices, set aside. Prepare the cream by whisking it with salt, chipotle purée and half of the smoked paprika in a mixing bowl. 2. Spray a baking dish with nonstick spray and put a layer of sweet potato down, overlapping to cover as much of the bottom as possible. Top with ¼ of the goat cheese and ¼ of the cream sauce. Repeat this process until potatoes, cheese and cream are all used. 3. Cover with foil and place in the oven for 30 minutes. Remove foil and cook for another 15 minutes. 4. Prepare the crumb topping by mixing the breadcrumbs, butter and remaining smoked paprika. Top the gratin and cook for another 10 minutes until golden brown. 5. Remove and cool for 10 minutes to allow the cream to set before cutting.

COVER STORY
STUDENT-LED THE COLLEGE SCHOOL
by stephanie wallace AT THE COLLEGE SCHOOL , rigid lesson plans and traditional lectures are not on the curriculum. The independent school in Webster Groves is dedicated to inspiring a lifelong love of learning in students in preschool through grade eight by putting education directly into the hands of its students through experiential learning. Even its youngest learners are empowered and engaged through the implementation of the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education. This year is the 30th anniversary of the school’s adoption of the Reggio Emilia approach, which was developed in Italy after World War II. Its principles include allowing children to control the direction of their learning, providing experiences to help them learn and allowing them to express themselves in many different ways. “One of the big ideas of the approach is that young children are very capable and can help direct their education because they have their own interests and curiosities that they want to pursue,” lower division head Penny Allen explains. “Teachers facilitate learning and provide experiences to spark interest. Students feel empowered because they are trusted with decision making and know their opinions are valued.” One of Reggio Emilia’s important concepts is “The 100 Languages,” a reference to the variety of ways children can explore feelings and ideas and connect with others. “There are so many ways a student can express themselves, but oftentimes in education, that can be limited to writing and getting their ideas down on paper,” Allen says. “That approach isn’t necessarily going to work for everyone. When student’s realize they can express their ideas in different ways, it’s very exciting.” Early childhood students at The College School are introduced to a variety of mediums for self expression like drawing, dance, dramatic play and sculpture. Currently, the fourand five-year-olds are exploring photography and what different images can capture. The environment is another key factor in The College School’s approach to education. Students have small group lessons in the atelier, a studio space where they work with a special instructor known as the atelierista. The atelierista provides creative lessons and opportunities for engagement. “The atelier is THE COLLEGE SCHOOL OFFERS HANDS-ON LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES. where students first encounter techniques like working with watercolor and pastels,” Allen says. “They carry these skills with them throughout the grades and get to enjoy revisiting and using these concepts.” Students’ learning is documented and shared with parents so they can be partners in their children’s education and better understand the school’s approach and how their child is developing. Students’ engagement with The College School’s experiential approach to education is clear. One example is when the kindergarteners undertook a project to add a stage to the school’s outdoor play area. They took field trips to see outdoor performance spaces like the Kirkwood amphitheater and learned about the components necessary for a stage. Students created their own designs and voted on which concept they wanted to implement. “One of the parents helped build the playspace, and now, kids can perform there,” Allen says. “It was a very authentic project driven by student interest, research and design. It’s not just writing a paper and getting a grade. Learning is something more exciting and meaningful.” & PHOTO COURTESY OF THE COLLEGE SCHOOL

MIN JUNG KIM
OF THE SAINT LOUIS ART MUSEUM MIN JUN KIM’S LOVE
PHOTO COURTESY OF THE SAINT LOUIS ART MUSEUM
of art has taken her around the world. Born and raised in Seoul, she studied art history at Wheaton College in Illinois and earned a master’s degree from the Courtauld Institute of London. Now, she’s bringing her unique perspective to the StL as the new Barbara B. Taylor Director of the Saint Louis Art Museum. While she’s SLAM’s 11th director, she is the first woman to lead the museum in its 142-year history.
how i discovered art history … Growing up, I always had an interest in art, but I didn’t have the knowledge of what that appreciation might lead to academically or professionally. When I came to the United States for college, I discovered art history as a field. It wasn’t something I had really encountered in South Korea. It was new and novel, and I fell in love with it. That led me to my chosen career path of the last 30 years. It was a happy accident that became a tremendous part of my life, and I’m thrilled that it has brought me to this point. the benefit of a global perspective … I think it changes how we approach things. There are less preconceived assumptions and a greater awareness of the fact that there can always be a multiplicity of perspectives. I may come at something from one angle, but others have different points of view. In many ways, diversity enriches the conversation and experience. what my past experience has taught me … I’ve worked in several museums in the last 30 years, and I think a theme that has carried throughout my career has been the importance of collaboration and partnership. For 13 years, I worked at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. I took on a number of different roles, one of which was director of content alliances. I managed collaboration

with the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. These are three fantastic museums that on their own are so distinct and wide ranging, but when you bring them together, it creates the most comprehensive collection one can conceive of. From that, you have the ability to essentially tell endless cultural narratives. That was very exciting, but at the same time, you have to recognize the challenge of bringing different parties together. To create something special and unique, you have to develop relationships over time. I hope to bring that experience to SLAM and continue to build partnerships in the community.
community. I want to continue all the extraordinary things that SLAM has done and build upon the incredibly strong foundation that is already there. I think there are a variety of ways visitors can interact and experience the art we have here, whether it’s a permanent collection or a special exhibition. It really varies from person to person, but that is one of the wonderful things about art. Some pieces may offer moments of comfort and contemplation, while others may challenge you to consider different perspectives you’ve not previously encountered. I hope that everyone is able to have a variety of experiences when visiting and revisiting the museum.
the role of cultural institutions in a community … The relationship is one that is symbiotic; cultural institutions thrive when the community thrives. I think it’s important to acknowledge that organizations like museums exist for the community. Our job is to create, sustain and engage connections. I’m looking forward to building SLAM’s existing partnerships so we can continue to work with various organizations to offer exciting programs.
being the museum’s first female director … It’s a profound honor and privilege to be the first woman director. I hope that I’m simply one of many more to come.
what i hope to achieve at slam … The first thing I want to do is get to know the museum, its collection, our staff and the constituents and stakeholders. I also need to learn more about my new hometown and
my first impression of st. louis … I’ve been so impressed. I knew a little about the city before coming here, but it has surpassed my expectations. St. Louis has such tremendous strength and rich cultural resources. I’m astounded by all there is on offer. There is so much to celebrate here, and I hope that SLAM and I can play a role in contributing to what makes it so wonderful. We want that to be reflected in the stories we tell at the museum.

Holiday activities are back at Eckert’s Farm! Guests can cut down their own Christmas trees, enjoy a holiday wagon ride, eat breakfast with Santa and participate in gingerbread workshops through Dec. 19. To help spread joy to military families, the farm also is donating sweet treets through Operation Cookie Drop. For every dozen cookies sold at Eckert’s Country Store or online through Dec. 5, a dozen will be donated to families at Scott Air Force Base.
UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT
Zoë Robinson has sold her three Clayton restaurants, Bar Les Freres, I Fratellini and Billie Jean, to Susan Barrett, owner of Barrett Barrera Projects. Barrett will bring her aesthetic expertise to the three restaurants with a new restaurateur partner, who had yet to be named at the time of writing. Bar Les Freres and I Fratellini will continue to operate under their established brands, and Billie Jean will become a new concept.
A FRESH START
At the end of October, Gerard Craft’s award-winning cocktail bar Taste closed after reopening in June. Craft said on social media that it was harder to bounce back than expected. Despite the hardships, Niche Food Group is launching a new concept in the space. Brass Bar will be an extension of Brasserie by Niche, which is located next door. The new menu will focus on French snacks and cocktails.
SMASHING!
The team behind Lucky Accomplice and SHIFT are opening a new casual concept, Press, in the Fox Park neighborhood this spring. Press will feature “smash pizza” and an extensive draft cocktail program. What is smash pizza? The dish is the result of chef Logan Ely experimenting in the kitchen and, somewhat like a mash-up of a pizza, calzone and sandwich, consists of pizza dough which is spread across a cast iron press and filled with ingredients. After it’s “smashed” together, more toppings are added, and it’s sliced and served like pizza.

Whether you’re attempting looks from YouTube and Instagram or simply trying something new, wading into the world of hair and makeup trends can be daunting. Beauty comes with its own language, and that language is constantly evolving. Here’s a guide to some of the latest lingo.
DUCK NAILS:
This wide triangular nail shape gets its name because it
waterline:
resembles a duck’s foot.
The line of
HALO EYE:
This angelic style of eye makeup uses darker shades on the outer and inner corners of the eyelid while a lighter shimmery shadow is used in the center.
overlining: Don’t be afraid to color
outside the lines! Make your lips look fuller by applying liner outside of your natural lip line.
root stamping:
Also called a root smudge, this hair color technique involves going over fresh color with a shade closer to your natural hair. This extends the life of the color by creating the effect of it fading into your natural roots.

THIS ’90S TREND IS BACK THANKS TO TIKTOK. THE LOOK IS ACHIEVED BY STARTING OFF WITH A STANDARD PONYTAIL AND USING TIES TO SECTION OFF SMALLER ROUND SECTIONS THAT LOOK LIKE, WELL, BUBBLES.
SOAP BROWS:
Looking for a cheap solution to lift and lock brow hairs in place? Glycerin soap easily achieves this full, fluffy look without eyebrow gel.
FOILING: No, it has nothing to do with tin foil. This trick for making eyeshadow appear more vibrant and last longer involves mixing metallic pigment powder with a base such as primer or setting spray to create a paste or cream.

Eyeliner that goes across the bridge of the nose like a unibrow.
american manicure:
Is the classic pale pink and white of a French manicure not for you? This stateside twist pairs a sheer natural base with tips of any and all colors.
cheugy: OK, this bit of slang isn’t exclusively used in relation to beauty concepts. It refers to anything that is trying too hard to be trendy or is out of touch with current trends.

Terry and Roger Beachy purchased this Clayton home two decades ago with a vision of transforming it into an English-style cottage. “We didn’t know what kind of house we wanted when we first came to St. Louis from California, but when I walked into this one, it won my heart,” Terry says. “My family is from England, so we added a lot of touches that remind me of home. The house was a blank slate to start with, but we have enjoyed making it our own.” The couple is relocating closer to family, but Terry says fond memories of the home’s many charms will stay with her.
Is the house well suited to families with children? It’s wonderful for a growing family. We spent most of our time on the main floor, but there also is a large, finished lower level where our grandchildren loved playing and relaxing. It has a family room area with a TV and lots of comfortable features. It’s almost like a separate wing just for the kids, so they can play in their own space but still be close by.

What else is special about the garden? In the spring and summer, there are columbines, hydrangeas, clematis, azaleas, rhododendrons and others. I love the fact that you’ll have flowers of one color this week, then when they are done blooming, something else will pop up to surprise you. There also are wonderful stone paths that invite you in or inspire you to go for a stroll around the house. People walk by all the time and ask, “How do you keep the garden looking so beautiful?” But it’s really not hard to maintain.
Does the home accommodate guests well? The living and dining rooms, family area and kitchen all connect, so the space flows well, and there’s also a deck on the back of the house. In warmer months, we could entertain groups of up to 150 people by putting a tent over the deck and creating a circular flow of guests through the house. This home has been the central gathering place for our relatives, too. And the lower level would work perfectly What is the neighborhood like? as a mother-in-law suite. FROM THE
BLOG OF… CHOOSING THE RIGHT SIDE TABLE We all want a warm, inviting and functional home, and side tables are a simple, inexpensive way to add functionality and a welcoming feel in any space. They offer a designated area for you and your guests to settle in and get comfortable while providing a fun opportunity to discover new shapes, materials and styles you might otherwise not consider. There are so many end table styles, shapes, materials and colors available, it can be hard to know where to begin. Whatever your interior design style, there are a handful of things to keep in mind when browsing end tables for your home: 1. Function How will you use this table? Side tables serve the obvious purpose of providing a place to set small belongings, but some offer more than just surface area. For instance, if you’re looking at end tables for your living area or something you can use as a nightstand in your bedroom, side tables with drawers or lower shelves provide additional storage. If you’d like an accent table next to your bathtub, you may not need as much storage. Nesting tables provide additional surface area when needed and are easily stacked, making them ideal for smaller spaces. 2. Size Regardless of where you’re placing your end tables, each should be at a height that’s comfortable to reach from wherever you’re sitting. In terms of overall size as compared to your other pieces, try to choose a table that maintains the balance in your space. If you have a lot of larger bulkier pieces, consider something sleeker and smaller and vice versa. 3. Shape The other pieces in your space will help determine the best shape of side table to choose to ensure your design remains well balanced. Traditional designs often feature darker wood tones, deep carvings and scroll-shaped legs with ball or claw feet. For modern-inspired spaces, you might consider clean lines, simple curves and geometric shapes, and with more organic design, go with something that reflects the imperfect asymmetrical shapes and silhouettes found in nature. It’s fun to mix and match silhouettes of tables with the different pieces you already have. If you have a rectangular coffee table, try a round side table. If you’ve got a lot of organic shapes and curves, incorporate side tables with more of a geometric shape to add interest and contrast to your space. If you’re more of a minimalist when it comes to your design style, choose shapes that coordinate with the pieces you’ve got already. 4. Weight Weight is something that ties heavily to your lifestyle. If your household includes small children or animals, it’s extremely important to choose more substantial pieces so they’ll remain steady as they get bumped into or overloaded with items. For rooms with less traffic, you might want a more delicately constructed piece. 5. Durability Depending on what you’ll be using your side table for, you’ll want to keep durability in mind, especially when looking to place your side table outside versus inside. If you’re afraid of damaging the surface, this could be a good opportunity to lean into some worn and weathered textures. These types of pieces help hide those accidental knicks or scratches that can sometimes happen while also adding a natural, timelessly aged feel to your space.

6. Material & Color Introduce interesting new colors and textures into your design with your side table choices. If you’ve been considering marble countertops but haven’t been ready to take the plunge, a marble side table will provide the look you want at a far lower investment. Marble is a gorgeous option for adding natural texture and contrasting color to your design, and it’s extremely sturdy, so it’s ideal for homes with children and pets. A wooden side table can add organic texture and natural warmth to any space. They are constructed from many types of wood and come in thousands of styles, shapes and colors. It’s also a great option for outdoor tables, given it’s a natural material. Be mindful of the finish if you’re mixing tones. Select a color that coordinates well with the rest of your wood-tone palette. Concrete fits beautifully into many modern- and industrial-inspired designs. It pairs well with geometric shapes and clean lines and stands up to the elements outdoors. Similarly to marble, it’s great to experiment with if you’ve been considering incorporating it on a larger scale in your home. Want more glam in your space? Try a mirrored end table. It packs a high visual punch for a low cost and allows you the freedom to step away from the all-too-safe options and choose something more fun or unique.

HOMEWORK
DEAR HOMEWORK,
We have recently retired to this Des Peres ranch located on a golf course. We’ve finished the interior, but now, we need to do the exterior as well. We’d like something to go with our sculpture from the Laumeier Art Fair. We hope you can help us. Sincerely, —SCULPTING A NEW IMAGE
DEAR SCULPTING A NEW IMAGE,
Your bright red sculpture is a perfect complement to your black and white house, and your goal to properly highlight it gave me the starting point for this refresh. I would build a low, stone retaining wall that aligns with your front porch and bows out at the center, creating a plinth that centers the sculpture on the front door. New lower hedges along the wall allow the porch columns to appear taller and more graceful. To improve the presentation even further, I’d use the same stone to build a mailbox/light pier, add a shade tree at the curb and surround them with a bed of ivy. I would then add a band of granite pavers at the base of the driveway to break up the sea of concrete and border the right side of the drive with a new low hedge and a Japanese maple tree to bring some landscape to this side of the property and soften the front entry garage. A larger, relocated carriage light and some potted plants complete the picture. Now, the sculpture takes pride of place while reinforcing what was already good about the existing composition. Hope that helps, —HOMEWORK

PICTURE THIS… THE FLORAL REVIVAL by lauren rechan
A THROWBACK TO BIG FLORAL PRINTS IS EMERGING on the interior design front because, even with trends we disliked the first time, everything comes back around. This is not exactly your grandmother’s vintage floral, though—it has been “retro-fied” for the 2020s.
Love this delicate light fixture!
Love the pop of color and femininity the shades and grass green backsplash add to this otherwise white kitchen.
Bright floral patterns are starting to replace the monotone bedding we’ve seen for years.
Nurseries are a great place to use one of these new and improved wallpapers or patterned fabric.
Just want a small hit of flower power? Try a bold pattern on a chair to brighten a room.
Many new fabrics mimic a watercolor floral painting vibe. Even a bath can get a fun punch of color and whimsy with floral-patterned tile.
Repainting a home’s exterior like this is a pretty unique use of floral design.
Add a touch of whimsy and beauty to your floors!
Retro-fied floral wallpaper makes a big impact on any room.
This otherwise dull office is transformed with a pair of flower power chairs! Floral wallpaper in the kitchen is making a huge comeback!

A LOOK BACK AT 2021 by stephanie wallace
WITH 2021 ALMOST BEHIND US, T&S IS TAKING A LOOK BACK TO SEE HOW THE REAL ESTATE MARKET FARED. We compared 2020 and 2021 sales statistics of single-family homes and condos in 17 ZIP codes. There is no doubt that the market has continued to thrive. Crunching the numbers proved that real estate is a $3.6 billion business in the StL, and on average, sellers received 100% of their asking price.
