EDITORIAL

associate editor staff writer

My daughter recently asked if she could skip school to come to work with me again. The oldest two just had a day at the office, and they always love tagging along with mom. They think my job is “so cool” and everyone I work with is “so nice.” I would agree. My job is cool. I get to promote my community and the amazing people and organizations within it every day. I witness the passion behind creative, ambitious, hardworking leaders, students, business owners, chefs, influencers and more who make St. Louis unique and worthy of notoriety. We once again have produced a year of publications that support what makes this city a place we love: a family-oriented, culturally rich, innovative mix of neighborhoods. And wait until you see what we have in store for 2020. Get ready for new columns, fresh ideas, revised design elements and more. We continue to work hard on our end because we think you deserve it. We are grateful for you, our readers, and we are so happy to have the support of our loyal advertisers. It’s all part of us getting to do what we love. So I guess my poignant message is this: Let the craziness subside and actually enjoy the holidays. Does it really matter if you have only two side dishes instead of five at Christmas dinner? Or if your child wears his favorite jeans instead of the three-piece suit you bought? (I gave up making my son dress ‘fancy’ when he could tell me if he’d rather not.) Having a third child has forced me to understand that you’ve just got to let some stuff go. And you know what? I’m more mindful and enjoy all of the moments I should because of it. Happy holidays, and see you in the new year!

I feel like I should have something poignant to say since this is our last issue of 2019, some quote that sums up my reflections of the past year. But what I have to say now really isn’t any different than what I promote and acknowledge all year long. Life is crazy. It can be overwhelming at times, in different ways for all of us. My struggles mostly come from being a working mom of three kids. But that’s also where my strength lies. My children notice my excitement about my role here at T&S, and I know they respect it. I’m proud to show them that balance, ever-changing as it is, is possible and enjoyable.

WORLD PEDIATRIC PROJECT by julia m. johnson

DESPITE THEIR BEST INTENTIONS, LOVING PARENTS can’t always provide what their children need. When kids in Central American and Caribbean countries require medical treatment their families can’t afford, World Pediatric Project steps in to provide medical expertise and compassionate care. The organization relies a great deal on private support, and St. Louisans respond generously to its fundraising efforts, according to founder and senior program director Kate Corbett. “In many areas of the world, children suffer and die from conditions that are treated routinely in the U.S.,” she says. “We transform and save lives by sending surgical, diagnostic and capacitybuilding teams to 12 partner nations and by bringing kids to the U.S. for complex surgical care.” This year alone, the organization has assembled 51 volunteer groups of health professionals and flown 110 patients to U.S. hospitals for life-changing operations. Annually, about 2,500 kids benefit from services like heart surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics, reconstructive plastic surgery, physical therapy and more. The nonprofit, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary, also is actively involved in training programs that help local doctors provide modern care in partner nations. “Some of our newest teaching initiatives focus on caring for the tiniest, most fragile newborns and treating young people with scoliosis, which causes great pain and social stigma and can be life-threatening,” Corbett says. The capacity to help more kids in more countries rests heavily on the organization’s ability to raise private support. Each year, it holds the Treasures in Paradise gala, which attracts more than 500 guests for an evening of tropical-themed fun and celebration. The event is much more than a dazzling party, though; it’s a tribute to all of the children the organization has treated in the past and will help in the future. “Funds from the gala make up nearly half of our annual St. Louis budget,” Corbett says. “It has become known as ‘the best cocktail party in town,’ and it features incredible food and wine.” This year, the event is scheduled for Jan. 24, 2020. Joe and Michelle Buck will be on hand to auction off an array of exciting trip packages and other treasures, and guests will have the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of children. Locally, World Pediatric Project works with Ronald McDonald House, SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, Shriners Hospitals for Children, St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Mercy to serve patients from partner countries. “We are very excited about the steady growth of hospital partnerships in cities like Philadelphia and Dallas as well,” Corbett adds. “They are helping to take care of the ever-growing list of children who need surgery in the U.S.” She says the need is always considerable, but the dedication of the nonprofit’s supporters is even greater. “We receive incredible thanks and appreciation from parents for the gift of healing their children,” she notes. “With the help of our medical volunteers, hospitals, supply partners and donors, we have alleviated suffering and saved the lives of thousands of patients. We believe that where children live should not be the deciding factor in whether they are embraced and healed. Our work is tangible, transparent and life-changing for the giver as well as the recipient.” & DECEMBER 11, 2019 | townandstyle.com

TALK OF THE TOWNS by bill beggs jr.

DOWNTOWN WEST 〉〉

A ‘For Sale’ sign is posted on the so-hip-it-hurts, curved glass brick walls at the entrance to the former MOOD Ultra Lounge, ultra-closed since two shootings in the wee hours in spring 2018. Two security guards were at the club, which had metal detectors, but what could one do when knuckleheads got kicked out, went to their cars for guns, and returned all hacked off and firing indiscriminately from outside? The second time, club owner Arthur Chikeluba was shot in the leg as he closed and locked the front doors. The gunfire at Locust and 20th streets (two doors down from the Pepper Lounge and catty corner from SLPD headquarters!) broke a front window of the dental office across the street; staff found a bullet in the cushions of the waiting room’s couch. Well, as a 1973 album title suggests, they only come out at night— which means, one would hope, they sleep it off most of the next day. The morning after the second shooting, an unmanned police car was parked outside the dental office, a camera pointed right at the MOOD entrance. This week, the ‘For Sale’ sign clearly stipulates ‘No bars or clubs’ for future use of the 2,900-square-foot ($3,000/month) space. Since the downtown west neighborhood is quiet during the day, perfect for an urban dental office and other professional pursuits, we have several suggestions for alternative uses. A daycare? Turned down really, really low, the sound system could be soothing enough for nap time lullabies, the glass brick ideal to buffer street noise and let in gentle, natural light for preschoolers to chill after lunch. Or, yet another nail salon? Could be a slam-dunk. Why not a breakfast-only place, open 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., for latelunchers or anyone who believes the most important meal of the day is just as important any time of the day … but maybe not at night. So, we called Gary, the guy representing the vacated MOOD space, to weigh in with our top-of-mind ideas. He chuckled. Gary lives in the building, and the other upstairs units are Airbnb rentals. Someone had floated plans for a hookah bar downstairs—but, ‘bar.’ Pepper Lounge seems to be doing well next door, he says; it uses two off-duty SLPD officers for security at night. But Gary has no worries, really. The first floor might do just fine as a third Airbnb, he surmises, what with the new St. Louis Aquarium and Wheel at Union Station, MLS stadium, City Museum expansion, etc., etc., etc.

ST. CHARLES 〉〉

In other metro dining news, this may go down a little easier than the stomach-churning Schneithorst’s development: Guerrilla Street Food has shuttered its restaurant in St. Charles. (“St. Charles?” someone sniffs, eyebrows arched. “My word, isn’t that out where the great unwashed live across some muddy river?”) Four other metro locations remain open for business. Guerrilla, a purveyor of Filipino-American cuisine, rolled out in 2011 as a food truck, which still runs. Guerrilla’s latest storefront, opened last year, is in The Loop. Anyway, it may be worth a nibble: Our friends at the Business Journal rated its food truck third in The Lou behind those of Balkan Treat Box and Seoul Taco. Meanwhile … you’ll have to head to St. Charles now to eat at Culpeppers Grill and Bar. It’s the only location left. Last call Dec. 4 at the CWE locale was the very last call for the neighborhood mainstay that had been on Euclid Avenue since 1935! Details about the abrupt closure to follow in our first 2020 issue Jan. 8.

FRONTENAC 〉〉

First it was Busch’s Grove, which has for all intents and purposes lost any semblance of its former identity as a 19th-century stagecoach stop. (Some of you may remember the cabins behind the historic restaurant and watering hole; meanwhile, the remodeled building facing Clayton Road at Price is but a shadow of its former self.) Our intro is just stalling, really—here’s the sad news: Soon to disappear forever is Schneithorst’s, just south of Clayton Road at 1600 S. Lindbergh Blvd. (Like we had to tell you where the iconic establishment is located.) The beloved eatery will serve its last meals on Christmas Eve. Then, the grill will cool off for good. Alas, the stork feeding its young in a nest atop the chimney will go away, as will the chimney itself, as will the rooftop biergarten … it may shed every last shred of its Germanic identity when The Village at Schneithorst’s expands by nearly 9,600 square feet in 2020. In our last issue, when we made “Another One Bites the Dust” get stuck in your head, we had no idea that such a familiar stop for hungry and thirsty St. Louisans would be the next to go. Established in 1956, the restaurant first was known as Hofamberg Inn. Generations of high schoolers craved its burgers and fries (after fibbing to their parents, perhaps, about going to the County Library to study.) In the early aughts, alas, much restaurant space was sacrificed as the property incorporated office and retail to become The Village. Such fond memories: I saw Stan the Man only once in my life, and it was at ‘Schneity’s’ just a few months before his passing at 92. As a matter of fact, my wife and I had just gathered there for brunch on Thanksgiving with a handful of dear friends as we had in 2018, with high hopes of enjoying that warm and wonderful experience for years to come. Nope. Es kommt nicht wieder, Schätzchen. The restaurant, which once featured a drive-thru, has been here since Stan Musial wore a Redbirds uniform. This one is going to be very hard for me, and many of you, to digest.

UNION STATION 〉〉

St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station wishes the metro a very Merry Christmas! The long-awaited, one-of-akind attraction opens Dec. 25 from noon to 6 p.m. That should give plenty of us a window of opportunity for a 120,000-square-foot glimpse into 1.3 million gallons of fresh and saltwater exhibits, right here on the left coast of the mighty Mississippi! Only glass will separate you and more than 13,000 creatures, from alligator snapping turtles to zebra sharks, not to mention hundreds of fish as beautiful as the colorful critters in Finding Nemo. (Nothing will separate a lucky few from frolicking with playful otters named, natch, Thatcher, Sawyer and Finn.) The eye-popping, $187 million entertainment complex includes the St. Louis Wheel, an indoor ropes course and unique shopping opportunities. Timed admission tickets to the aquarium went on sale last week; although we doubt any more will be available for Christmas day, you can check stlouisaquarium.com for when the attraction starts opening regularly at 10 a.m. Officials say they are dedicated to offering STEM-based programs and supplemental educational resources to educators and students. Assisted by donors and volunteers, the aquarium also will provide free field trips, programs and transportation for the metro’s underserved communities. TT TRIVIA | 1. WHAT’S THE ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF ES KOMMT NICHT WIEDER, SCHÄTZCHEN? 2. WHERE IS WIENER SCHNITZEL (TWO WORDS) USUALLY SPELLED WIENERSCHNITZEL (ONE WORD)? 3. OK, WHAT THE HECK IS THE DOGGONE STUFF, ANYHOW? LAST ISSUE’S ANSWER | BOXING DAY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH FISTICUFFS, UNLESS TWO KNUCKLEHEADS ARGUE OVER WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT. (NOT MUCH, REALLY.) THE SECULAR HOLIDAY IS CELEBRATED DEC. 26 IN THE U.K. AND COUNTRIES FORMERLY UNDER THE BRITISH CROWN. WE PREFER THE AIRING OF GRIEVANCES AND FEATS OF STRENGTH DURING OUR OWN SECULAR HOLIDAY. FESTIVUS IS COMING UP ON DEC. 23!

TOWN TALK

GLENDALE 〉〉 Buses no longer stop in Glendale because of low ridership, according to the Bi-State Metro, but an official Metro sign at Austin Place and Lockwood Avenue still clearly identifies the narrow strip of grass between the road and the northern edge of Westborough Country Club as ‘Grace’s Glendale Bus Stop’ (GGBS). As luck would have it, No. 56 stopped running Sept. 30, and regular passenger Grace Mehan turned 27 Oct. 1. Somehow, she still gets to her three part-time jobs in Kirkwood on time. Her mom, Colleen, sometimes drops her off and picks her up. When the weather’s favorable, Grace may ride both ways on ‘Big Pink,’ her bicycle. Difficult access to public transportation, however, has impeded her desire to live more independently. And it’s hindered her ability to further her mission of demonstrating that men and women with Down syndrome can make important contributions where they live and work. In 2011, her dad, Tom Mehan, built a wooden bench with a tall back at the bus stop for Grace. Every holiday, from St. Patrick’s Day and Father’s Day to Halloween and Thanksgiving,

the family decorates the bench and surrounding vicinity for the occasion. They really go big a few weeks before Christmas. ‘Santa Monday’ is at 7:30 a.m. Dec. 16. Dozens of Grace’s friends, co-workers, customers—and, well, fans—come dressed as Santa, elves, or whatever festive getup they choose to wear. There is even a Bassett hound dressed as a reindeer! That’s right, if you don’t show up to wave or give a thumbs-up to folks driving to work or taking kids to school, you may get coal in your stocking. Younger sister Maggie has been there (in red P.J. britches); she and older brother Brendan live in NYC. Maggie, 24, is a grad student in sports medicine. Brendan, 30, is a bartending, drumming graphic artist. But if he ever got coal in his stocking, Grace had nothing to do with it. She’s the most transparent, unpretentious 20-something you’d ever hope to meet. She does have a little something extra—one-third more of the chromosome 21 couplet than she needs, actually. “Don’t underestimate her,” Colleen emphasizes. Anyone who’s met her isn’t likely to. And that’s even before you find out that she taught herself sign language from watching YouTube. Or, that she’s won silver and gold medals

That’s so sweet of you!” You can meet her on Santa Monday. (In the StL, of course, it may be sunny and 78—maybe not a teeth-chattering 3 degrees, as it was in 2017.) PATTY

We’ve got the inside scoop! Luxco, a St. Louis-based beverage alcohol company, is releasing a new 100% agave tequila, El Mayor Cristalino, next year in Missouri. Topped with a glass cork and filled by hand, this isn’t the kind you drank in college. From its distillery in Jalisco, Mexico, the tequila is made with handselected blue agave and gets its clear brilliance from being filtered with ultra fine charcoal. Marg, anyone?

by patty hannum DEAR READERS,

Well, this is it! It’s my last column for 2019, and from what I understand, you’ll still hear from me next year. The new publisher has not pulled my column, which, to be honest, would be awfully awkward since we’re friends. So as in previous years, I will use my 600 words to thank those who make my column possible. First, Karyn Williams, our editor, and Julie Johnson, our associate editor, routinely save me from myself. I am not a writer. The last creative writing class I took was in 1976 at Nerinx Hall. Somehow, no matter what word salad they receive, it becomes readable. I also appreciate that they will listen to my bizarre ideas for new columns and never mention them again.

DECEMBER 11, 2019

Second, my brothers and sister and their spouses: Without you, I would have no material. I know there are times when you would prefer I don’t share, but I can’t help myself! You all are very entertaining. I still have not given up on the idea of a reality TV show that would feature us. (I have a friend who works for the Discovery Network. If only I knew how to work a video camera … or even the camera on my phone … I could shoot a dem. We could be famous!) Anyway, remember I love you; don’t die. Third, my immediate family: I do try to shelter you just a little bit, but with the birth of my first grandchild, Robbie, forget about it! Everything he does now will be documented. No need for a baby book!

Fourth, to my friends, especially the ones who go on my kooky adventures: It is nice to have sidekicks. And for those of you who look at me and say, “This better not end up in your column,” thank you for the idea! I often don’t realize a great idea until you point it out. Fifth, to Donald J. Trump (stunned you, didn’t I?): I feel like we live in a bit of an upside-down world, and much of that has to do with you. At times, I get really worked up and have no place to go with the energy, except here! So thank you for inspiring me to sit at the keyboard and say what I want. Sixth, to my OCD: Yes, I am tipping my hat to my mental illness. Most of you know I take medication to keep it under control. But as

anyone with a mental illness knows, a little bit always slips through. My OCD makes me hit my deadlines, think about funny topics to share, and try to improve my writing each issue. And finally, to my beloved readers: Perhaps beloved is too strong, but anytime someone tells me they read my column and laugh, I want to hug them—which is strange because I’m not a hugger. In all of these years, I have received only one negative comment, and I just assumed a family member did it under a fake identity. I love writing this column, and as long as you keep reading it, we’re stuck together. Happy Holidays!

Holiday Florals

For All Your Décor Needs

PHOTO: COLIN MILLER OF STRAUSS PEYTON PHOTOGRAPHY

THE VELVET

HAMMER by joan berkman

I overhead a conversation of a top executive at our firm that included information that seriously affects a colleague who is also a friend. Do you think I should share it or keep it to myself? Without knowing exactly what you overheard—and if you indeed heard it correctly or heard all that was being discussed— my sense is that you should keep this information to yourself. How you deal with confidential information comes down to trust, no matter how you come across it. It can make or break your personal credibility, impact your standing at the firm and, possibly, your reputation in the broader community. If this is information you shouldn’t know, you shouldn’t disseminate it. That said, if you feel compelled to discuss it, talk with someone you trust, like your family attorney or someone outside the organization. Be aware that the information you heard also could be wrong and divulging this kind of information could put you in the center of drama and, again, possibly jeopardize your standing both at work and in the community. Another word of caution: People don’t often thank you for bad news, and should your friend/colleague make a decision based on your hearsay, he may hold you responsible. My best advice: Keep this information to yourself.

uHappy holidays to all and some festive advice … Although no has asked The Velvet Hammer, I would like to offer some suggested do’s and don’ts for this year’s holiday office party: ▪ Do dress appropriately. (In fact, ask in advance about dress attire.) ▪ Don’t arrive too early or stay too late. ▪ Do make a point to speak with somebody new. ▪ Don’t overindulge. (Keep drinking to a minimum, especially with the boss and colleagues.) ▪ Do talk about something besides work. ▪ Don’t forget to thank your host. ▪ Do have fun. Bottom Line: Remember that it’s a celebration—eat, drink and be classy!

TUNED IN MCKNIGHT PLACE by julia m. johnson BEING PART OF THE MCKNIGHT PLACE Assisted Living & Memory Care family is all about creating connections. Staff members are more than just an occasional presence; they’re among residents every day as friends and allies, and they bring a wealth of experience and commitment to their roles, says music therapist Samantha Hinson. “The best part about working at McKnight Place is getting to develop personal relationships,” she notes. “Each resident is different, and it’s an exciting challenge to learn what makes them feel happy and fulfilled. We also get to know their families well because we know how important their role is.” Hinson helps bring out each resident’s expressive side by immersing them in the healing power of song. “Almost everyone has a connection to music,” she says. “Even when a person develops dementia, that link is not lost. So much can be brought back to their lives through music.” She exposes seniors to music history, musical games, instruments and vocal performance as an important way of enriching their lives. “Our residents love practicing and singing in the choir, and they perform several shows throughout the year,” Hinson says. “We develop a sense of community through music, and it’s amazing to witness that in action every day.” She also provides individual music therapy sessions for seniors who prefer a more personal learning environment, and she organizes special musical events for wedding anniversaries and holidays. In fact, the McKnight Place calendar is always full of enjoyable gatherings and happenings. To mark the season, the community will host a holiday party for residents and families Dec. 12, and on Dec. 17, the jolly man himself will make an appearance at Carols and Cookies with Santa. The McKnight Singers will entertain guests, and there will be a show of residents’ artwork as well. Throughout the month of December, seniors can enjoy art and music discussions, holiday movies, gingerbread house decorating and more.

RESIDENTS ENJOY HOLIDAY FESTIVITIES.

Resident John Mozley says the many social and creative outlets at McKnight Place make him feel right at home. “I’ve made friends with other men here, and it feels like I’ve known them forever,” he says. “Every year, I look forward to the holiday party with live entertainment so I can dance with my wife. All of the fun things going on are definitely the best part of living here.” Hinson says it’s an honor to play a role in the comfort, happiness and well-being of seniors. “There are so many great opportunities for everyone here,” she says. “The sky is the limit not just for residents, but for us as professionals to be creative and meet their needs. McKnight Place is very person-centered, and that gives me the chance to individualize my work with our seniors, all of whom have rich, interesting histories. It’s such a privilege to learn about their SE NI OR LIV IN G personal stories, accomplishments and values and be a part of their lives now.” & SPEC IAL SECT ION

PROTECT YOUR HEART 〉〉 Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine may have found a way to reduce the risk of developing heart failure after a heart attack, severe viral illness or other cardiac injury. After the death of cardiac tissue, immune cells called macrophages eat the dead tissue and stimulate the heart to repair itself. However, if the cells are around too long, they become inflammatory and cause damage that leads to heart failure. In a study published in JCI Insight, the team found a way to supercharge macrophages in mouse models, increasing their ability to dispose of damaged tissue and reducing inflammation.

MELANOMA RISK 〉〉 Melanoma is the fifth most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States. In a study published in JAMA Otolaryngology, researchers at Saint Louis University found that the incidence of skin cancer in the head and neck has increased by 51% in pediatric, adolescent and young adult populations, although they are unsure of the reason why. The team looked at patients in the U.S. and Canada from infancy to age 39 diagnosed between 1995 and 2014. It also found head and neck melanoma is more common among males; in other parts of the body, it is usually more common in females.

STOPPING HIV 〉〉 Washington University is helping lead a nationwide push to end the HIV epidemic by 2030. Dr. Ruba Patel, an assistant professor of medicine, has received a $3.9 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to create a regional resource center at the university. Along with co-principal investigator Dr. Bradley Stoner, she will establish the Midwest Capacity Building Assistance Network, which will provide technology and other resources to organizations working to increase HIV prevention. The center also will provide workshops and training to share best practices for HIV testing and treatment.

HELP WITH OPIOID ABUSE 〉〉 Saint Louis University clinical psychologists Terri Weaver, Ph.D., and Jeremiah Weinstock, Ph.D., have received a grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration for a program to train clinical psychology graduate students to better assist people suffering from Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). Called Scaling UP, the program includes a three-year partnership with Chestnut Health Systems and Family Care Health Centers to improve underserved patients’ access to prevention and treatment services.

Family Holiday Traditions BY STEPHANIE WALLACE

Whether it’s sledding down Art Hill, visiting the botanical garden for Garden

Glow or baking a favorite cookie recipe, the most magical things about this time of year are those special activities we do with family. With that in mind, we asked some local grandparents to share some of their favorite holiday traditions.

There is a lot Helen Jarrick loves about the holidays. With nine grandchildren, she has more than a few special traditions in place, including visiting family in Pennsylvania and enjoying a special stew with her grandson. “One year, my daughter read him a story about Santa eating beef stew instead of milk and cookies, and now, she prepares it every year for Christmas dinner,” she says. This year, the Gatesworth resident is looking forward to cementing a new holiday tradition: breakfast with Santa. She attended the event at the senior community for the first time last year with her three great grandchildren (pictured here), and she’s excited to do it again. Jarrick’s favorite part is watching the children’s excitement when Santa delivers a special gift to each of them. “We provide the present, but Santa gives it to them, and the kids are so excited about that,” she notes. “I love being with my grandkids and watching their reactions to the whole thing.”

When Nanette Williams and her husband, John, became grandparents, they knew they wanted to start some special holiday traditions. The Manchester residents (who are T&S editor in chief Karyn Williams’ in-laws!) settled on a gingerbread house decorating party after getting the idea from friends. “This will be our fifth year hosting, and the group keeps growing!” Williams says, adding that they started with two grandchildren and now have five ranging in age from 5 months to 11. “Each child who is old enough to decide how they want their house to look gets their own, and they also get to decide how much or how little help they need from the adults.” Williams says her favorite part is seeing all of the unique creations—and how different they can be! Some memorable constructions include a garage (complete with cars made of candy), a gel icing lake with a jellybean penguin, and a chocolate Santa on a shredded wheat rooftop. “Everybody gets involved, adults as much as kids,” she notes. “We’re all so focused on decorating that we actually have candy left over!”

When it comes to Thanksgiving traditions, a morning run probably doesn’t spring to everyone’s mind, but John Fitzgerald (brother of T&S’ own Patty Hannum) does just that. For about a decade, the 72-year-old, who goes by P with his grandkids (short for Papa), has been lacing up his running shoes to tackle the Kirkwood Webster Turkey Day Run with family. “My kids spend way too much time with my parents,” jokes Fitzgerald’s daughter Katie Sotiriou. “They truly enjoy each other’s company. Plus, the kids love pointing out the three other runners who are older than P!” Before the race, the family meets at the chair statue in Kirkwood for photos. After Turkey Day, the Fitzgeralds enjoy another annual tradition: chopping down the family Christmas tree. Every Black Friday, John and his wife, along with their children’s families, travel to Festus to find the perfect tree, and bigger is definitely better—last year’s pick was 20-feet tall! They cap off the venture with a lunch at Buffalo Wild Wings full of laughter and reminiscing.

from Pittsburgh, but their relationship actually got its start in the Windy City. “We met through mutual friends about three years ago,” Ellie says. “We all went out together to a Chicago brewery, and after, Jared asked me to go on a date with him.” Their first official outing took place at a well-known Chicago landmark. “I had joked with Jared that I didn’t want to go on ‘just another boring date,’ so he took me downtown to ride the ferris wheel at Navy Pier,” Ellie recalls. “He didn’t know about my fear of heights! It took some convincing to get me on board, but we ended up having a great time.” After the two had dated for a couple of years, Jared conspired with some of Ellie’s friends to get her back to Navy Pier for a surprise proposal. “My friend was in town running the Chicago Marathon, and she convinced me to meet her and her nephew there,” Ellie says. “I thought other friends would be there as well. Jared and I were running late, and I was rushing around trying to find the others when he stopped me and explained that it would be just the two of us. He got down on one knee and popped the question.” Ellie says she was completely surprised and delighted by the proposal. “It was an amazing day,” she notes. “To top it off, our parents were in town jointly celebrating our fathers’ 65th birthdays, so we all met for dinner and drinks. Our friends were there waiting to surprise us as well.” The bride and groom both attended Indiana University, and while Ellie says they have many college friends in common, their paths never crossed on campus. The two still are ironing out some of the wedding details, but they are looking forward to a late summer ceremony and reception at Westwood Country Club in Frontenac, surrounded by friends and family. Ellie, a Ladue Horton Watkins High School grad, teaches kindergarten, and Jared works in medical sales. They live in Chicago. &

KEEPING KAREN UP WITH

Town&Style is as homegrown as it gets, and we’re so proud of the communities where we live, work and play. These past few weeks, I’ve attended the St. Louis tradition Guns ‘n Hoses to benefit The BackStoppers, run in a community 5K, and celebrated the merger between two of my mentors, Jason Braidwood and Rusty Keeley. Koman Group and Keeley Development Group are now KDG, a company that will continue to transform our city’s skyline along with make impactful contributions to causes these two care about.

COVER STORY

A NEW ER SSM HEALTH ST. MARY’S HOSPITAL by stephanie wallace NO ONE WANTS TO MAKE A TRIP to the emergency

room, but sudden illnesses and injuries are facts of life. SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital is doing what it can to relieve some of the stress related to ER visits. The hospital is undergoing a $15 million expansion to optimize treatment and improve the experience for patients, families and staff. “Our purpose is to offer exceptional, compassionate care that meets people’s needs, whatever they may be,” says president Travis Capers. The hospital recently finished its third phase of the expansion, cutting the ribbon on 9,000 square feet of additional space. This includes 11 treatment rooms, two large trauma-resuscitation rooms, two nursing stations and a new lounge for emergency medical services. The space was designed with input from staff to ensure it improves the patient experience and increases efficiency. “Doctors and nurses wanted better visibility from the nursing stations,” Capers says. “They also requested a quiet room where patients and their families could have private conversations.” Storage was added to make

equipment and supplies easily accessible from anywhere in the ER. Along with more space within the hospital, the expansion includes a new ambulance entrance and canopy with two additional parking spaces. “It will enable patients on stretchers to transition more smoothly into the hospital,” Capers says. Another unique feature is a built-in scale, so patients can be weighed without having to be removed from stretchers. Paramedics can gather the information for doctors, who can use it to quickly create necessary treatment plans. The new addition also includes an eight-room behavioral health observation unit that will open next month. “It’s close to the waiting room, so patients seeking behavioral care can be taken to a room quickly,” Capers explains. “That’s important for their safety and that of others, and it will allow us to provide the best possible care.” He adds that this new unit is one example of how St. Mary’s focuses on patients’ specific needs to improve outcomes for everyone. Rather than managing all patients

in a single space, the new ER will have distinct treatment areas where different needs can be met more efficiently. As part of this mission, the emergency room is in the process of being remodeled into a new quick ER. The 10room space will be used to treat patients dealing with less serious illnesses and injuries faster so they can return home sooner. “With these different quadrants of care, people can more easily get where they need to be and receive the treatment that is best for them,” he says. “It also allows our employees to do their jobs more effectively.” All seven phases of the expansion are expected to be completed next summer, and the project will increase the total number of treatment spaces in the ER from 38 to 50. Capers notes that while the new spaces and resources are exciting additions to St. Mary’s, they are not what set the hospital apart. “It’s not about the brick and mortar, but the people who work here,” he says. “Our employees provide the best possible care for patients, and I’m happy that we can provide the tools they need, including this new emergency room.” &

CHEF BILL CARDWELL

APRONOMICS

by julia m. johnson | photos by bill barrett AFTER MANY YEARS IN THE ALL-CONSUMING RESTAURANT industry,

Bill Cardwell is getting a taste of a different life. Over the decades, the chef built up notable St. Louis staples like Cardwell’s, Cardwell’s at the Plaza and BC’s Kitchen before ultimately leaving restaurants behind. His final farewell was closing the doors to Cardwell’s at the Plaza last year. However, that doesn’t mean he has hung up his toque. Operating simply under the name Chef Bill Cardwell, he now offers services as a private chef and consultant, bringing his years of expertise into culinary classrooms and clients’ homes. He’s also available to advise up-and-coming restaurateurs on the best recipes for business success. Before he became synonymous with innovative cuisine in St. Louis, Cardwell graduated with highest honors from the Culinary Institute of America, studied under Albert Stockli of the Four Seasons Hotel New York and gathered hands-on experience in Swiss kitchens. Here in the StL, he earned a reputation for fresh, seasonal fare in a sustainable, locally sourced setting. Cardwell says he took some much-needed time off and now is primed for the latest phase of his career. “I spent time with my grandkids and went skiing,” he says. “I especially enjoy the mountains of Colorado and Utah.” He also stayed busy working on new business ideas and cooking at home, which he finds therapeutic. “It definitely keeps me in the groove,” he notes. The chef says flexibility is the watchword for his new venture. “I’m doing small events like dinner parties and special occasions in clients’ homes or commercial spaces,” he says. “I also advise people on starting new restaurants and designing menus, and I’m always looking for new opportunities. It’s nice to

be able to do whatever I feel like doing. If I come across something that makes sense, or someone brings me a good idea, I will look into it. Pretty much, if it’s anything to do with hospitality, I’m there.” His cooking classes are open to individual and corporate clients, and he enjoys crafting events that combine food with motivational messages. On the private dining side, his business doesn’t include catering and he isn’t available for large events, but he does enjoy creating family-style, buffet dinners for groups of 30 or 40. “After the holidays, I’ll do some private classes for people who received one of my gift certificates,” he says. “I love how all of these ideas help keep me in the food business.” So what particular flavors strike his fancy this time of year? “I like to use a lot of root vegetables, squash and greens in the fall and winter,” he says. “I’m pretty seasonal with my at-home diet. I don’t have one food profile that I stick with, but I am big into international flavors like Mediterranean. And my wife enjoys spicy dishes, so I use a lot of chiles and aromatic seasonings.” At the time of our conversation, he was mulling over how to dress up fresh red snapper for dinner. “I really enjoy working with local growers and sellers,” he says. “Tower Grove Farmers Market is my go-to for produce.” And on those occasions when the chef doesn’t feel like cooking, he ventures out for sushi and Italian food. “There are a lot of great new places I haven’t yet been able to try,” Cardwell says. “When I was running my own restaurants, I rarely had time to dine out unless I was in another city. Now, I’ll have the chance to do some things for myself.” &

DEEP THOUGHTS by patty hannum

AN ENTERTAINING GUIDE TO ENTERTAINMENT

uncut gems

Adam Sandler has a bit of a reputation as cinematic kryptonite. In recent years, he has notoriously churned out uninspired comedies that aren’t funny, and it can be easy to forget about the charisma and talent that made him a draw for audiences in the first place. Uncut Gems serves as a reminder of what the actor is capable of, while feeling as opposite a typical ‘Adam Sandler movie’ as possible. The film follows Howard Ratner (Sandler), a New York City jeweler constantly in search of his next big score. He’s a whirlwind of bad decisions, bouncing between pawn shops and bookies while dodging loan sharks. It’s all very messy and frustrating, but also highly engaging. Sandler gives Howard a captivating, chaotic energy that draws you in, much like the kaleidoscopic beauty of the African black opals that drive the plot. Along with pulling a great performance from Sandler, directors Josh and Benny Safdie give every frame a sense of tension. From sound design to camera movement, every element works together to create mounting anxiety. Sometimes thrilling, sometimes funny, Uncut Gems is certainly not a relaxing experience, but it never loses momentum.

never been told they would benefit from a little therapy. I dare you. They don’t exist. Some people actually do seek professional help, and if you ever have sat on the other side of the couch, you definitely have wondered, “What in the world does my therapist really think about me?” This book gives you a peek into a therapist’s practice and introduces you to a variety of her clients who all suffer from different issues. I must say, nearly every one of them is relatable. But the very best part is when the author writes about her own therapy, brought on by the sudden break up of a long-term relationship. It proves everyone really should talk to someone.

run the 100-yard dash at a Special Olympics event. They were all very motivated to finish the race, and of course, each wanted to win. The gun sounded, and they all started running; everyone, that is, except for one little girl who tripped on the starting block, fell and skinned her knee. The other runners noticed what happened. Instead of continuing the race, they stopped and walked back to her, all nine of them. One boy reached down to help her up, another girl kissed the top of her head and told her that she would be OK. Then, all of the participants linked arms and walked across the finish line together. It was reported that the cheering from those watching went on for 5 minutes. I wonder what our families, schools and communities would be like if we all followed the example of those children. What if we all took a moment to put our own interests aside and help each other? With the multitude of problems, chaos, discontent and anger in the world right now, perhaps the solution is more simple than we make it out to be. The following story just might hold the key to bringing back a spirit of peace and joy, which is truly what this time of year is all about. A young sociology professor sent his class out to visit a Baltimore slum to interview 200 disadvantaged boys and predict their chances for success in the future. The students, shocked by the living conditions, predicted that about 90% of the boys they interviewed would someday serve time in prison. Twenty-five years later, the same professor assigned another class to find out how the predictions had turned out. Of the 190 boys they were able to locate, only four had ever spent time in jail. Why had the students’ predictions been so wrong? More than 100 of the men remembered one high school teacher, Miss O’Rourke, as having been an inspiration in their lives. After a long search, the class found Sheila O’Rourke, now more than 70 years old. But when they asked her to explain her influence over her former students, she was puzzled. “All I can say,” she finally decided, “is that I loved each and every one of them.” Perhaps The Beatles were right: All you need is love. Happy holidays. &

BEAUTY TERMS OF 2019

BEAUTY from -toA Z B Y ST E P HANIE WALLAC E

Beauty comes with its own language, and it’s constantly evolving. Whether you’re replicating the biggest trends from social media or searching for the perfect products, there can be a lot to sort through. Here is some of the latest lingo to help you understand what everyone is talking about!

ST R A N D L I G H T I N G :

More intricate than highlights or even balayage, the hair coloring technique involves separating and lightening a few strands at a time. The lighter strands blend into the natural hair color for a more seamless look.

MICROCONCEALING:

Using a small amount of concealer on blemishes and not wearing foundation

Floating Crease: This graphic look uses eyeliner along the crease of the eye rather than the lash line.

Cloudless Skin: Think of this as the ultimate skin care goal. Going beyond simply blemishfree, this K-beauty term refers to having healthy skin that results from a positive well-being.

SUGARING: A NATURAL ALTERNATIVE TO STANDARD WAXING, THIS HAIR REMOVAL PROCESS USES A MIXTURE OF SUGAR, LEMON AND WATER AND IS LESS LIKELY TO CAUSE BRUISING OR IRRITATION.

Adaptogens:

Used in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, these herbs and roots may help you resist physical, chemical and biological stressors. Proponents believe they train your body to handle the effects of stress by interacting with your hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the sympathoadrenal system. Some, like holy basil, can be eaten as part of a meal, and others can be brewed into teas or taken as supplements.

B R O W L A M I N AT I O N :

An alternative to microneedling, this is essentially a perm for your eyebrows. A setting lotion helps lift the brow hairs upward, creating a smoother, fuller appearance. SOURCES: MARTHA STEWART, ELLE, COSMOPOLITAN, ALLURE, TIME

LIKE K-BEAUTY BEFORE IT, THE TERM REFERS TO ASIAN PRODUCTS, TRENDS AND METHODS, BUT THIS TIME, THEY HAIL FROM JAPAN. HERE, THE FOCUS IS ON MINIMALIST APPROACHES FOR PREVENTION AND MAINTENANCE, RESULTING IN LUMINOUS, HEALTHY SKIN AND LITTLE NEED FOR MAKEUP.

ESTÉE LAUNDRY:

J-BEAUTY:

Worried about honesty and authenticity from your favorite makeup and skin care brands? This Instagram page is run by an anonymous, international collective of beauty insiders, and it’s blowing up thanks to its insight into some of the industry’s less than beautiful practices.

Bakuchiol:

Derived from psoralea corylifolia (aka Babchi or Bakuchi), this vegan alternative to retinol delivers the same antiaging benefits without side effects like dryness and sensitivity.

retinoid sandwich:

Glass Hair:

A pin-straight, super glossy, symmetrical bob

While retinol is known for its effective antiaging properties, it also can dry out your skin and make it super sensitive. This skin care approach involves using moisturizer before and after application to create a buffer for your skin without diluting the product.

SHINGLING: Don’t head up to the roof! This is a method for detangling super curly hair by using a leave-in conditioner or gel to separate and define each curl.

HOMEWORK

DEAR HOMEWORK,

I enjoyed your recent Homework: Lessons column about foundation plants, and I think it’s definitely applicable to our home! Also, the previous owners built the top addition with cream siding, and we’d like to either paint it all one color or leave the brick and repaint the siding and shutters. We would love some color suggestions (we’re leaning toward gray and white) and landscaping ideas. Thank you. Sincerely, —TIME FOR A COLOR CHANGE

DEAR TIME FOR A COLOR CHANGE,

Often with Colonial style homes, I try to increase symmetry and formality, but with the easygoing asymmetry of your property, I think it’s best to keep it that way. When I initially drew your house as an uncolored line drawing, I felt it was missing something as an all white facade. Therefore, I am taking you up on your suggestion of using gray by painting the second-floor siding that color. I think it gives the presentation some needed detail. I also widened some of the shutters on the wider windows. Also note that I have added a few vertical mullions to the windows to give them a more traditional feel. For the landscape, I show a new curved boxwood hedge on the street side of the entry walk, flanked with low growing junipers. New round boxwoods frame the front door and compliment larger coach lamps. A simple hedge serves as the foundation planting for the main body of the house, and more junipers underplant the service wing. I left the existing redbud in place to reinforce the overall casual feel. Hopefully that gives you some new ideas. Thanks for asking, —HOMEWORK
