from the editor's desk I am not a runner. So when GO! St. Louis, featured inside this issue, started 17 years ago, I barely noticed. Runners are all over the place, I figured, so what’s so special about a new runners group? But now that I understand more about what the organization does, I am humbled. It’s not only about one big race (which at 20,000 participants is no small feat, either). The nonprofit is all about getting us off our duffs—everyone. If obesity is the modern-day scourge, activity is its antidote. That’s why the big April event isn’t merely called the St. Louis Marathon, but ‘Family Fitness Weekend.’ And GO! St. Louis isn’t only looking to put a Band-Aid on the problem. The group gets right down into schools to impact children—start ’em early. It provides incentive programs for kids to run on a regular basis, and to participate in the many fun runs/walks GO! sponsors (yes, there are other events besides the April extravaganza). When I was a kid, it was unthinkable that children would some day need a special reason for getting out and moving around. But computers, tablets and gaming systems have changed that (not to mention cuts in gym programs). Obesity, and even those stubborn spare tires around the waist, contribute to a slew of health ills. New findings suggest even Alzheimer’s may have a link to fat and how we metabolize it. Never has the connection between exercise and health been clearer: sound body, sound mind.

COVER STORY

SAVING SENIORS MARY RYDER HOME by alexa beattie THIS ISN’T ONLY A GALA, IT’S A ‘JUBILEE.’ And you can feel the excitement in the air. “We’re

calling it a ‘jubilee’ because we want to get across the idea of celebration,” says Tim Butler, executive director of Mary Ryder Home, “of our residents and our history.” The Mary Ryder residential center in the Central West End is home to more than 60 vulnerable older women. Many fall below the poverty line, and some have suffered abuse. The home has sheltered elderly women since 1930 when it was founded by Depression-era citizen Mary Elizabeth Ryder as she was moved by the hardship around her. Although the home was expected to close when the economy recovered, Ryder saw an ongoing need and worked to keep it open. Today, thanks to the United Way, fundraising efforts and donations from the public, it remains a safety net for some of our city’s most fragile. The Mary Ryder Home Jubilee 2017 is its biggest annual fundraiser and this year’s goal, says board member Barb Pierce, is $350,000. But there’s work to do: “We’re looking for sponsorships now,” says Butler, explaining the levels that fall between $20,000 (for presenting sponsor) and $1,500 (the Bronze level). “We have a Silver sponsorship ($2,500) and we’re working on a Platinum one ($10,000).” It’s the first time the event will be held at the Ameristar Casino Resort Spa in St. Charles, which has more room for guests. “We’re shooting for 450, but the space can hold 600,” Butler says. It’s also a first for the $50 ‘Wine Pull,’ which guarantees a nice bottle of vino for every raffle ticket purchase. As in past years, a live auction will include a selection of resort trips, and the ‘Funda-Need’ portion of the evening will offer participants a chance to pledge donations toward essential Mary Ryder services. “Our residents often require therapies and prescriptions not always covered by insurance,” Butler explains. “Fund-a-Need is a way for the public to help us with those kinds of costs.” He adds that events like the jubilee also support the “wonderful quality-of-life programming” Mary Ryder offers its seniors, such as musical performances, game nights, yoga and crafting. Another goal this year, say both Butler and Pierce, is to raise awareness about the Mary Ryder legacy and invite people to step in and do their part to ensure its future. “We are celebrating all that is wonderful here,” Butler says. “And we are excited to invite people along.” The Mary Ryder Home Jubilee 2017 takes place May 6. KMOX’s Carol Daniel is mistress of ceremonies. The Mary Ryder resident choir will perform, as will the Boeing Jazz Band.

[ TALKOF THETOWNS ] by bill beggs jr.

Once $80-million-plus worth of renovations and an extensive addition have been completed at Ladue Horton Watkins High School, alumni just might not recognize the alma mater. Well, maybe from the back, according to project renderings. The central facade with familiar cupola that has faced Warson Road since the building was erected will remain, but much of the dated building’s remainder will be massively reconfigured to bring it into the 21st century. Construction, which began over the summer, is concentrating on updates to the academic core of the building, where classrooms have not been renovated signifcantly since they were built in the 1950s and ’60s. Funding comes from an $85.1 million bond referendum district voters passed last April. When completed, the high school will feature classrooms designed to accommodate today’s educational best practices, which require spaces conducive to collaboration across disciplines; small group work; the integrated use of science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM); and the opportunity for students to use their knowledge in real-world applications and group-based projects. The ambitious project being built by S. M. Wilson & Co. is anticipated to be complete, for the most part, by the beginning of the 2018-19 school year. A cafe in downtown Maplewood is, we’re almost loath to say, the cat’s meow. Mauhaus is the given name of this kittylover’s paradise, and it’s been open since November at 3101 Sutton Blvd., not a fur piece from almost anywhere in town. (Meouch! There’s no charge for puns, although there probably should be, considering they’ve probably heard the ones we’ve subjected you to several times this week already.) Inspiration came from successful ventures elsewhere in this country and abroad, where there are cat cafes with names such as Catmosphere, Caturday and KitTea. Reservations at Mauhaus are recommended: There’s a

MAPLEWOOD

LADUE

$10 per person fee that allows for an hour in the cat lounge and helps cover maintenance and kitty cat care. But that $10 may be applied to the cost of food and beverages. Mauhaus, which serves baked goods and other light fare, coffee and tea (and all the cat-cuddling you can handle), is in partnership with Tenth Life, a cat rescue organization in south St. Louis. Cafe owners say it’s all about the cats, which they hope are adopted as time goes on. There’s no shortage of homeless cats in the city, of course, so a steady replacement of felines is all but guaranteed. One important caveat … see, we didn’t say ‘catveat,’ at least at fur-st … don’t bring your own cat when you visit. They have plenty of their own. But you’ll probably bring your smartphone to capture any and all amusing cat behavior. Goodness knows, there could never be enough cat videos circulating the ‘interwebs’ for us to enjoy instead of cringing at political posts. Kitties are our friends. For anyone worried about the tenor of public discourse in this country at the moment, there was a ‘hug-in’ on South Grand Boulevard a couple of Saturdays ago. There was some prepress of the event, but much less following it. (KMOX Radio said ‘dozens’ of hugs were given out; organizers said it was hundreds!) Perhaps there’s just too much rotavirus going around. But people were offered hugs, absolutely free, at four locations: Jay International Foods, Rooster, the Carpenter Branch of St. Louis Public Library, and Aldi. Volunteers had ‘Free Hugs’ signs, and several merchants— among them Starbucks,

Rooster, Qdoba and SweetArts—handed out treats. The nonprofit Gitana Productions co-sponsored the event in an effort to bridge the societal and cultural gaps that widened during the presidential campaign and election. Volunteers said most hug recipients responded positively, and some folks even got out of their cars to join in. Still, some people were just freaked out by the prospect of a stranger grabbing them, although most huggers asked permission first. Anyhow, can pleasant surprise be a bad thing? The regular embracers among us think not. Green Ribbon Schools in this beautiful country, ecologically conscious as we hope it is, are selected by the U.S. Department of Education (isn’t that headed by ‘Betsie Davos’? Or is it ‘Web Debois’?*). The state education department nominated five schools for the federal program, four of which are in the metro, and among those is W.W. Keysor Elementary in the Kirkwood School District. (Applause!) This program recognizes those schools that are actively and creatively seeking ways to: reduce environmental impact and costs; improve the health and wellness of students and staff; and provide effective environmental and sustainability education. The other three metro-area schools and districts are: McKelvey Elementary, Parkway North (Parkway); Maplewood-Richmond Heights Middle School (Maplewood-Richmond Heights) … more applause! The fourth Missouri school is in Kirksville. (Take that, KC!) At Keysor, pupils as early as kindergarten learn what’s actually waste from their lunch, as well as what is compostable or recyclable, and put the right stuff in the right container(s). Plastic water bottles are practically verboten; families use sustainable, reusable tumblers that can be filled at water fountains, where the water is filtered. And school officials intend, as time

goes on, to have as much produce from the garden as possible in the lunch line. So, it’s a big deal. U.S. education officials will verify that the nominated schools meet all applicable requirements, and 2017 honorees will be announced April 22: Earth Day, natch. Marriott has a newer brand, TownePlace Suites, which is kind of like a rabbit—all of a sudden, it’s all over the place nationwide, with more to come in a hurry. Another will have hopped into Chesterfield by May 2018. Construction on the third one in the metro is set to start in May in the Blue Valley development. It will be a 112-suite hotel near St. Louis Premium Outlets, south of Interstate 64, just off Chesterfield Airport Road. The company says that this year, on average, a TownePlace Suites will open every

six days! (That’s so amazing, maybe I should lie down. Or as they say, get a room.) Since 1997, 275 have opened as of this writing. And the process has picked up speed. Three years ago, the brand included 175 hotels. TownePlace Suites is projected to have 300 hotels by the end of this year and 500 hotels by 2020. In Chesterfield, as is the case most anywhere else, the hotel will have an indoor pool and large meeting room and serve as an extendedstay property designed for transplants to get settled in for a long work stay or before they’ve found permanent lodgings in the metro. The other two TownePlace Suites in the greater StL are in St. Charles and Fenton ... so far. Speaking of growth, officials say the Blue Valley development will have expanded to nearly 600,000 square feet when this project is completed, with zoning for 1.4 million square feet altogether. THE[IN]SIDER

Y d T e T h A s P a e l un

I’VE BEEN MARRIED FOR A LONG TIME,

33 years to be exact. Carey and I got married young. And as required by the Catholic church, we attended pre-Cana classes. Led by a priest and other married couples, these encourage you to talk about important issues—things like money, future children and family. The first two were easy: we had no money and we both wanted kids. Family, however, was a problem. His didn’t like me, and mine embraced him in a kind of ‘finally we get to unload her’ way. In the classes, we also talked about our annoyances. Mine was Carey’s driving. I assumed the priest would want to spend some time exploring Carey’s family’s relationship with me—why they disapproved of a catch like me, and what I could do to fix that. You know, to make sure we’d have a ‘Walton Christmas.’ But no, he wanted to talk about Carey’s driving. What didn’t I like? Why did Carey drive this way? So much time on Carey’s driving and so little time on his family—it perplexed us both. Let me just say, the priest was right. For 33 years, I have screamed, gasped and slammed on the passenger-side fake brake as Carey has driven like a maniac across the country. Sometimes, I will make one of my kids sit in the front seat (yeah, I know) so I can be in the back and not see what’s ahead of me. Our fights almost always start in the car. So when we decided to drive from St. Louis to the Florida Keys with our two dogs, I knew I had to figure out a coping mechanism that did not include constant gasping, swearing or Xanax. I decided instead to use those 20 hours to make some observations from the highway. First: Why, oh, why do people feel it’s necessary to be in the left lane while they are texting? Or better yet, why do people feel the need to drive and text? What is so bloody important as you drive your blue Jeep Cherokee with Georgia plates at 80 mph down I-75 that it can’t wait? Need to tell them you are on your way? Checking the scores of a game? Reading an article on Politico? Whatever, get off your phone! Second: With all the social media available, why do people still feel the need to write on bathroom walls? Seriously. I don’t care that you were ‘here,’ nor do I care that you love Johnny. Chances are by the time I read your heart-shaped message, you won’t love him anymore, so stop it! And who carries Sharpies in their purse? I guess people who write on bathroom walls. Third: How do billboards with spelling and grammar errors actually get put up? Isn’t there some sort of copy editor for signs who reads them and says, ‘Oops, that’s wrong!’? I haven’t seen this many needless apostrophes since junior high. Whoa, I just reread this and I sure sound shrill. But you know what? I made it safe and sound to the Florida Keys with only a few gasps. So my husband thanks you for coming along on our 1,300-mile journey. My mind was so occupied I didn’t slam on the fake brakes once. TIPS FOR TAX FILING: WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Many filers don’t take advantage of medical expenses because they need so many of them to exceed 7.5 to 10 percent of their adjusted gross income to even get their first dollar of medical deduction. However, what they overlook is that assisted living may qualify as a 100 percent medical deduction if you are chronically ill. That can equate to big dollars with the high cost of today’s assisted living. Also, student loans in a child’s name that parents pay are not a valid deduction for Mom and Dad. These are deemed a gift to the child, but the interest that was paid on that loan can be a deduction for the child as long as the child is no longer claimed as a dependent. He or she can deduct up to $2,500 of the student loan interest paid by the parents each year, even though the student can’t itemize on their tax return.

If your employer offers a 401(k) or other type of deferred pension plan, make every effort to contribute the maximum amount allowable—especially if your employer matches your contribution. Otherwise you are leaving money on the table that could benefit you in your retirement. Think of the employer match as an immediate, 100 percent return on your money. Even if there’s no match, all the funds are tax-deferred and grow tax-free. If your employer does not offer a retirement plan, consider making a contribution to a traditional individual retirement account or Roth IRA. The former potentially offers a tax deduction for the year the contribution is made, but both offer tax-deferred gains. Check your year-to-date withholding and consider changing the taxes withheld if you are expecting a large refund. This is especially important if you are claiming the earned income tax credit, or EITC, or the additional child tax credit. Why? The IRS is now required by law to hold all refunds on those returns until Feb. 15. The new law was put into place to allow the agency additional time to detect and prevent tax fraud. You will need to complete Form W-4, the Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate, to adjust the amount of taxes withheld, and submit it to your employer.

If you sold your home in 2016, remember to deduct your prorated real estate taxes from Jan. 1, 2016, through the date of closing. You can find this amount on your closing statement. Your mortgage interest statement will not have this amount if you sold your house prior to the date your real estate taxes usually are paid. Many of my clients have missed this deduction in the past, but you can amend your return to include this deduction if the sale occurred anytime in the previous three years. If you are currently operating a business as a sole proprietor, consider obtaining an LLC through the Missouri Secretary of State website and then electing to be taxed as an S corporation. It might sound complicated, but a qualified tax professional can walk you through the process or do it on your behalf. The eventual tax savings can be significant!

“someday” finally came! This client had wanted to update their kitchen for what seemed like forever. They have a beautiful, bustling family and busy schedule. We took a space that was dark and divided and opened it up. White cabinets, marble tile, and natural light brighten their new kitchen. Everyday it now easily hosts everyone’s comings and goings. In the end, their space is about living life fully with the ones they love. Check out more of Karr Bick’s nothing ordinary transformations on Facebook and Youtube

TREND REPORTfromL.A. by marylyn simpson

DISCOVER THE HOTTEST TRENDS HITTING THE WEST COAST WITHOUT LEAVING THE SHOW-ME STATE!

saved by the bell

ck a b e r a the’70s

Revolve, the beloved online retailer, opened its brick-and-mortar flagship in L.A., and it has become a retail hotspot for tourists and locals alike. Always on trend, one of Revolve’s most popular Aussie brands, Asilio, makes a bell-sleeve top, Loud Play, that’s taking L.A. by storm. If the Loud Play top is any indication that the ’70s are back, it’s safe to say you should start stocking up on bell-sleeve tops and dresses this season, as I don’t see this trend fading any time soon.

Chokers made a huge comeback in 2016. From the red carpet to the runway and everywhere in between, fabric chokers were the accessory du jour. While Kendall Jenner may have moved on from the trend she single-handedly started, she recently confessed to a new obsession with metal chokers. LA fashionistas are quickly taking note. Wanderlust + Co’s Ring in Gold Choker features seven gold ball details and a solid gold metal chain that immediately updates your choker game. Layered or worn solo, the gold choker is a must-have accessory for 2017. $39, wanderlustandco.com

It’s no secret that bucket bags are back. But Liebeskind Berlin’s Izumi bag features textured leather details and a classic design that make it more than just a trendy accessory. The genuine leather handbag can easily transition your look from day to night without sacrificing space or style. I love the adjustable side straps and solid leather paneling that add an element of depth to this sophisticated bag. An L.A. street style favorite, the Izumi is designed in Germany with a distinct L.A. appeal. $219, usa.liebeskind-berlin.com

Activewear is the second skin of Angelenos, so it should come as no surprise that Varley, an L.A.- and London-based activewear line, is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after brands in the city. Boasting a bold blush snake print, the Carson bra and compression-fit Walnut legging are sure to grab the attention of everyone from the Starbucks line to your fellow gym buddies. Available later this month, the fashionforward ensemble will help you step up your activewear game without busting your budget. ▶ Carson Bra: $65 Walnut Legging: $120 varley.com

It seems as if Instagram has gone gaga for Gucci’s Princetown Mule Loafer. But if the Italian leather loafer is a bit out of your budget or shearling-lined shoes aren’t right for you, Sol Sana’s Kim Slide is the perfect alternative. Minimalist and versatile, it can be worn from cocktail hour to corporate outings thanks to its classic leather exterior and timeless design. It’s a small investment piece that will last long after the year’s trends have come and gone. $134, nordstrom.com

COVER STORY

[RUN FOR ALL GO! ST. LOUIS by julia m. johnson ON YOUR MARK, GET SET, GET FIT! That’s the message of GO! St. Louis, a Clayton nonprofit

that gets residents into running shoes and on the road to a healthful lifestyle. The organization is putting finishing touches on its annual GO! St. Louis Marathon and Family Fitness Weekend, held April 8 and 9 in Forest Park and downtown St. Louis. It features races for all skill levels, including a marathon, half marathon, relay and more. The idea is to get people moving and support community wellness, says Mona Langenberg, president of the nonprofit. Family Fitness Weekend isn’t just for those who run and train regularly. Many people are intimidated by the idea of a race, Langenberg says, but different participation levels make this event very accessible. You can run various distances, walk, or take part in children’s or senior events. “There isn’t just one type of runner; it’s really for everyone,” Langenberg notes. “That’s the whole point: for people to get out there and enjoy it together.” She says it takes about 2,500 volunteers to pull off this event, GO! St. Louis’ largest, which draws 20,000 runners from Missouri, Illinois and other states. Business teams and individual runners alike really get into the spirit of it. Half marathon title sponsor PNC Bank holds pre-race training events at some of its branches, Langenberg says. And for the first time, the bank has selected two of its staffers, novice racers Kolleen Walsh and David Brody, to chronicle their training journey via blogs and social media. Their experience is meant to encourage other first-timers to sign up. PNC also pays the registration fees for all its employees who enter. “Many are willing to take it on because of that, and the fact that they want to challenge each other and do something healthy,” Langenberg says. “We have sponsored GO! St. Louis’ event for more than 10 years because the organization helps improve the well-being of the local community,” says Michael Scully, regional president and head of banking at PNC. “When one of our executives ran the half marathon in 2014, he saw the benefits of supporting an organization like this. That race was the catalyst for a companywide focus on fitness events.” To make the 2017 race weekend extra special, GO! St. Louis has been working closely with the CityArchRiver Foundation, which is spearheading the $250 million revitalization of the Gateway Arch grounds. “For a cool twist this year, the start and finish lines of the downtown distance races will be on Leonor K. Sullivan Boulevard under the Arch,” Langenberg says. “It will showcase the great work CityArchRiver has done, and give runners a memorable finish to the events.”

Q: AS A GROUP LEADER, I’VE ALWAYS ENCOURAGED MY TEAM

TO TAKE RISKS. CONSEQUENTLY, WE’VE EXPERIENCED A FEW FAILURES ALONG THE WAY. I’VE BEEN TOLD YOU CAN LEARN A LOT FROM FAILING. FRANKLY, THAT’S EASIER SAID THAN DONE AND I COULD USE SOME ADVICE ON HOW TO PUT FAILURE TO WORK. —HOW NOT TO FLUNK AT FAILURE

A: Learning from our mistakes sounds simple, but many of us find it

hard to do. For one thing, it’s not easy admitting failure, especially in today’s culture of ever-higher performance expectations. What’s even tougher is to accept that failure does not excuse our own incompetence or a half-hearted effort. That said, it’s easy to flunk failure itself and miss the valuable insights it holds. The first step is to be able to admit that you failed. Covering up for failure only leads to self-deception and possibly further failure down the road. Experts say that exercising a little humility and humor can go a long way here. And, being able to talk openly about failure demonstrates that you truly understand the importance and necessity of trial and error, which, in many cases, contributes to future success. Asking the basic questions of why, where, how and what went wrong is imperative. Don’t start with discussing who is responsible; this just tells your team you’re more interested in assessing blame than figuring out what your team can learn from this failure. Again, use a little humility, even humor, by sharing some of your own past failures and what became clearer as a result. It is all about ongoing, open communication that allows for discovery of possible problems. These can be corrected before your next trial and error turns into ‘trial and terror.’

Q: LATELY, I SEEM TO FIND MYSELF WORRYING ABOUT EVERY ELEMENT OF MY WORK, AND I KNOW I’M DRIVING MY OFFICE MATES CRAZY. ANY THOUGHTS OR MANTRA TO HELP A HABITUAL WORRIER? —NEED A MOTIVATOR

A: Not knowing the root of your habitual worrying, I’m not so sure a snappy motivator will do the trick. And, depending on what you are stressing about, you might want to consider addressing this issue on a deeper level with a professional counselor. However, when dealing with a nail biter at the office, I’ve found helpful the following couple of lines exchanged in the movie Bridge of Spies. The first line is: “Aren’t you worried?” The next is: “Would it help?” So, for me, and hopefully for you, if it doesn’t help to worry, why waste your time doing it (or that of your colleagues)? THERE’S NO AMBIVALENCE about what this new

Mike Johnson spot is as soon as you walk in. It’s got that griddle-cooked burger smell that might bring you back to your meals at Burger King. In fact, much of HiPointe is deliberately retro: the Fazio sandwich buns, thin burger patties, toppings, simple milkshakes and the prices. It’s a cool idea. The main attraction, burgers, are described as a blend of brisket, chuck and rib meat. Mind you, the cooking process—on a hot greased griddle—means it still tastes like fast food made by a short-order cook. The good news is, the menu is ‘chefdriven’ (meaning trained chefs created it, and there’s a chef on site), which accounts for a few of the more gourmet offerings (shaved Brussels sprouts, salmon banh mi, bacon and collard greens sandwich). My double cheeseburger with bacon ($9) was an impressive pile of food. Arranged on a butter-toasted Fazio’s potato bun were tomato slices, lettuce, mayo,

pickle, onion, mustard, ketchup, American cheese and two thin beef patties griddled practically to extinction. To my palate, the charred meat over-dominated all those wonderful fixins. A meatless dish, the Veggie Burger ($7), was really good. The patty, a blend of quinoa and beans, was flavorful and in this case, the griddling process had a less burnt flavor, probably because a veggie burger has no fat to sizzle up and char. The Greens & Grains salad ($10) also was good—super grainy with wild rice, wheatberry, quinoa, red pepper, baby greens and crunchy tortilla strips. It was satisfying, and the lime vinaigrette dressing was good. The surprise favorite during one visit was Salmon Banh Mi ($9), two small fillets of pleasantly griddled fish on a hoagie bun with cilantro and creamy chile mango aioli. Something pickled in there imparted a great sour note that made the fish pop, and the fillets had good texture from the griddle—a little bit crisp around the

edges. Another good experience came from the Fried Chicken Sandwich ($8.50), which included two small breasts, lightly fried, on a bun with all the fixins. It was reminiscent of Shake n’ Bake flavors. The milkshakes are made with Ronnie’s vanilla ice cream, a local product, but they didn’t really take me back to the old drive-in days when milkshakes were thick and creamy. What’s a burger without fries? Or slaw, for that matter. The sides here are an astoundingly low $2.50 and come Belgian-style, sticking out of a pint container. The accompanying ‘sauce andalouse’ was good. But our sides came to us barely warm. The Brussels sprouts were best, shaved with shallots and plenty of bacon. However, the vinegar slaw was too liquidy, and the White Cheddar Mac & Cheese needed more defining flavor—more cheese, butter, or both. I get what they’re going for here—a local Shake Shack that’s more high-quality than typical fast food spots. I’m just not sure they’ve succeeded yet.

THE FIRST OF MANY HEART-STOPPING MOMENTS in The Rep’s production of To Kill a Mockingbird

happens within seconds, when Jean Louise Finch (a grown-up Scout) puffs life into the set. As the tree stretches out its branches and tufts of grass grow up, she corrects an overturned porch bench and sets a tire swing (and her memories) in motion. Considering the potential for staleness with a classic like this (in 56 years, the book has never been out of print and more than one million copies are sold each year), the Rep’s deft handling feels thrillingly fresh and tells us right away we are in for a treat. Indeed, we are. It is 1935 in Maycomb, Alabama, and although the small town is in the grip of the Great Depression, summer for Scout and her brother still is “everything good to eat … a thousand colors in a parched landscape.” While they and their friend Dill (who Harper Lee modeled on her own childhood friend Truman Capote) concern themselves with childish things (mainly the mystery surrounding their reclusive neighbor Boo Radley), their father, Atticus Finch, takes on the inhumanities of society in the Jim Crow era. Those ‘thousand colors’ are beautifully introduced when Miss Maudie wheels in a barrow of flowers, and the set’s sky, fashioned from rough boards and a few tin stars, is a dusty old flag, desiccated as the landscape it spans. (In the second act, when an innocent Tom Robinson is being tried before a white jury for the rape of a white girl and the country’s morals hang in the balance, the ‘flag’ appears more ragged still). We certainly cannot forget the historical backdrop to this coming-of-age tale, for scenes are punctuated throughout by black voices raised in mournful spiritual song. It’s a powerful, haunting soundtrack that reminds us again and again of a history of racial wrongs. Risa Brainin directs the show and has cast her characters perfectly. Atticus Finch, the personification of kindness and integrity, is played by a gentle Jonathan Gillard Daly. Jem and Scout are played by local twins Ronan and Kaylee Ryan, and Charlie Mathis, age 9, makes his Rep debut as a captivatingly impish Dill. Brainin says she always starts her process by asking “why this play, at this time, for this audience?” In the wake of Ferguson and other events, she was keen to ask herself how different are the circumstances for the African-American community today than they were in 1935. The timelessness of this story—the fact that its appeal to empathy and justice is just as relevant now as it was then— makes it, without question, a must-see.

Hands & Feet, Fingers & toes by alexa beattie

We certainly put our hands and feet through their paces. We pound pavements and keyboards and rely on our digits for almost all our daily activities. But even a tiny blister on a heel or a painful corn between the toes can stop us in our tracks. Not to mention that carpal tunnel or a case of trigger finger that can seriously affect our ability to work. FEBRUARY 22, 2017 | townandstyle.com

| F13

CorNs & Calluses

These husky things are basically the same, explains Dr. Katie Hoang, a podiatrist with Foot Healers Podiatrist Clinic, except a corn usually has a nucleus and is on the toe rather then elsewhere on the foot. Both are caused by pressure. “The body protects itself from pressure by putting down tissue as a buffer,” Hoang says. This could occur where the shoes rub, where toes rub together, or on the tip of a hammer toe. Older feet are more prone because there tends to be less fat on the bones, she says. Although the tissue is dead and corns and calluses typically don’t bleed, they can be painful, and Hoang cautions that care should be taken with home remedies. She does not recommend over-the-counter callus removers because these contain acid, which can cause ulcerations. A pumice stone or emery board can be helpful, and a doctor’s office can ‘shave’ a callus or corn with a scalpel in a matter of minutes. But unless the deformity that is causing the problem is addressed with something like hammer toe surgery or bone spur removal, calluses and corns likely will reoccur. At the very least, wearing wider shoes with a bigger toe box can minimize discomfort.

BuNioNs

Bunions are a common problem when it comes to feet, and the deformity is hereditary, says Dr. Michael Horwitz, CEO of Feet for Life Podiatry and SafetyFix Medical Technologies. The problem is exacerbated by tight shoes, and although a bunion’s impact can be lessened by shoe-stretching, sometimes surgery is necessary. Bunions occur most often at the great toe joint. “When the toe flexes, there’s a jamming effect, which creates a painful ache when you walk,” Horwitz explains.

Bunions are a common problem when it comes to feet, and the deformity is hereditary. While many shoe repair stores can stretch most shoes, Horwitz says surgery to correct bunions is relatively simple. “Done through a small incision, the bone is cut in a very exacting manner and repositioned so that there is no longer any prominence,” he explains. Although hardware isn’t always necessary, in many cases a screw is implanted. “In the past, the hardware has been left in the foot,” Horwitz says. “But we don’t really know what the long-term effects are of having metal in the body. The good news is that the latest treatment can involve a removable screw.” Recuperation time is minimal; a patient can be back in tennis shoes after three weeks, he says.

sWolleN feet

Although in severe cases, swollen feet can be a sign of something serious, most swelling is benign and, according to Dr. Matthew Breeden, SLUCare physician, comes from age-related ‘venous insufficiency.’ “As we get older, our veins have more trouble getting blood away from the extremities,” Breeden explains. While arteries have their own muscles to move the blood through, veins rely on nearby skeletal muscles. And although veins have valves to stop blood going back down, Breeden says the valves tend to lose their integrity with advancing years. This problem is made worse if a person is on their feet all day; pregnant women and overweight people also are more prone. “Blood pools,” Breeden says, “but swelling can be alleviated quickly by simply elevating the feet.” He says there isn’t much truth to the idea that eating salty foods causes puffy feet, unless there’s something else going on that relates to either heart or kidney function. Breeden cautions that swelling to the extent that putting on shoes is difficult, or swelling that reaches up the calf toward the knee, needs attention. “In the worst case, these can be signs of heart failure or liver disease,” he says. “And if the swelling is accompanied by chest pain or shortness of breath, you should see a doctor immediately.” Dr. Michael Weiss, a podiatrist at Washington University School of Medicine, cautions that chronic venous insufficiency can lead to chronic venous disease. This condition is marked by enlarged veins, skin discoloration and skin ulcers. “The longer swelling hangs around, the worse it is,” Weiss says. He recommends compression socks, which can be bought from medical supply stores, he says, or—in the case of extra snug varieties—prescribed by a doctor. “The sock needs to act like your muscles and keep the flow of blood from going back down,” he says. Weiss stresses, however, that it’s important to determine if one or both feet are swollen, since swelling in just one could indicate either a broken bone, or—more dangerous—a clot in a calf. “A clot needs to be addressed right away,” he says, “because

10 percent will move up to the thigh, and half of those will go up into the lungs.” He adds that warmth and tenderness on the back of the leg could indicate a clot, but a true diagnosis can be made only with a venous Doppler ultrasound.

As we get older, our veins have more trouble getting blood away from the extremities.

trigger fiNger

Scan the code to get our top picks for weekend fun.

Stenosing tenosynovitis, or trigger finger, is caused by any work or hobby that requires repetitive gripping or grabbing. It can affect the thumb and the middle and index fingers, and in severe cases, results in the digit getting stuck in a bent position. Dr. Daniel Gruener, medical director of St. Louis Clinical Trials, says a finger can stay locked indefinitely, or can be snapped back, “popping like the trigger of a gun.” The condition, he notes, is a result of inflammation of the tendons. “Usually, a tendon glides smoothly through the sheath of tissue that covers it, but if the sheath becomes inflamed, it causes scarring and thickening, impeding the tendon’s passage,” he explains. “The popping or clicking sound is the tendon being drawn through the blockage.” Gruener says he blames the increase in cases on technology—specifically keyboard use and scrolling over smartphone screens. Women are more likely to suffer than men, but Gruener says it’s not known why. Diabetes is a risk factor, as well. And if you have trigger finger once, you are more likely to have it again. In severe cases, surgery is necessary.

The condition is a result of inflammation of the tendons. However, there are effective measures that can help avoid the need for surgery. The first thing Gruener recommends is to rest the finger for three or four weeks. During that time, ice it or soak it in warm water daily and wear a night splint to keep the finger straight. Physical therapy exercises can help loosen a thickened tendon sheath, and anti-inflammatory drugs like Aleve and Motrin can lessen pain. Ninety percent of patients, Gruener says, benefit from steroid injections. (For diabetics, that number reduces to 50 percent). ‘Percutaneous release,’ meanwhile, uses an inserted needle, guided via ultrasound machine, to break apart the blockage. “It’s not as bad as it sounds,” Gruener says. Surgery, as a last resort, is an outpatient procedure involving local anesthesia and a small incision at the base of the finger.

Carpal tuNNel syNdrome

Contrary to popular belief, Dr. Shawn Kutnik of Archway Orthopedics and Hand Surgery, says increased computer use is not at the root of carpal tunnel syndrome. “There is some argument among our ranks, but there’s no research that backs it up,” he says. The carpal tunnel is a thick, fibrous passageway of ligaments and bones at the base of the hand that houses the median nerve. When this nerve is compressed, Kutnik explains, there is increased pressure, which causes numbness and tingling in the thumb, middle and index fingers. In the condition’s early stages, this happens more often at night, causing the hand to ‘fall asleep.’ As it progresses, the symptoms occur during the day as well, eventually leading to a deep ache at the base of the palm, with pain radiation to the fingers and up the arm.

Women are three times more likely than men to have the syndrome ... Women are three times more likely than men to have the syndrome (possibly because the tunnel itself is smaller), and those with diabetes and autoimmune and endocrine disorders also are more prone. Again, there’s increased risk among those who do a lot of gripping and lifting, but Kutnik says still, 40 percent of sufferers have no contributing risk factors. The good news is that a simple wrist splint worn at night can be an effective solution, and if surgery is required to relieve pressure on the nerve, it’s a simple 15-minute procedure done with a local anesthetic or regional block. “I do thousands of them,” he says.

Nancy McClure, owner of CarePatrol of Greater Saint Louis, is excited to be celebrating one year in business. She has helped 19 families find communities for themselves and their loved ones and is currently helping several others find safe communities to fit their showcase needs. Nancy is looking forward to helping even more families in 2017 and beyond. CarePatrol provides a free community service to help families find assisted living, independent living, memory care and in-home care options. Families and seniors receive personal attention from a local Certified Senior Advisor, either on the phone or faceto-face, who gathers pertinent information to make a referral that best matches the needs of the senior. To ensure quality, CarePatrol tries to visit each community before suggesting it. Every family receives information about a small, handpicked number of communities rather than just a random list. We accompany clients on tours to our recommended communities and review the care and violation history of each. CarePatrol exists to provide the safest care options for seniors across America.

CREVE COEUR ASSISTED SHOWCASE LIVING & MEMORY CARE

At Creve Coeur, we understand the limitations of a one-size-fits-all approach to assisted living and the necessity for a program specialized for residents who may suffer from Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). They may not need much help with daily activities, but they may show signs of confusion, isolation and forgetfulness. The Residence Club™ is a transitional memory care program that helps individuals with memory issues who are currently residing in assisted living and may not be ready for a full transition into a high-level memory care program. This specialized group helps support the individuality of the resident by maintaining normal daily activities and provides a group of like-minded companions. One of the benefits is that residents can remain in their selected apartments while benefiting from structured activities and socialization. In addition, weekly updates are provided to family members. Participating in this group can be just the adjustment needed to get your loved one thriving again.

If you’ve noticed your loved one’s overall health and happiness may be waning at his or her current community, let us show you the difference our Residence Club™ can make. All of us want the same thing when it comes to placing family members in the hands of others. You can rest assured that the staff at Creve Coeur Assisted Living & Memory Care will give you and your loved ones the attention, love and heartfelt care they would give their own family.

gatesworth MARTHA KESSEL, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

getting to know Martha Kessel: The walls of Martha Kessel’s office are lined with colorful artwork, gifts given to her by residents of the community she has watched over for the past 27 years. The Gatesworth is her second home, says Kessel who serves as executive director; the 340 residents and 230 members of staff are her extended family. On any given day, find her walking the halls, sitting to chat, ushering in new families and attending to the needs of employees. Before coming to The Gatesworth, Kessel served as director of parish cultivation for St. John’s United Methodist Church in the Central West End and Webster Hills United Methodist Church. In these roles, she learned the importance of personal connection and brings that emphasis to her role every day. “Residents’ needs always come first,” she says, adding that The Gatesworth’s motto is ‘The answer is yes. What’s the question?

what makes your community so special? When asked what else makes this retirement community unique, Kessel is quick to sing the praises of the employees, some of whom have been with her from the start. “Employees are everything,” she says. “You can have a beautiful building and all the programs imaginable, but it’s the staff that makes a community special. We are honored and very blessed to have such a team.” Fortunately, The Gatesworth has those other features, as well, she says. Take, for instance, the dining options: “I know of no other community that offers full restaurant menus, but each of our three dining rooms offers at least 20 items. And that’s very unusual.” Kessel adds that in addition to serving exceptional food, the Gatesworth’s dining culture, with happy hours and socializing events, significantly enhances residents’ lives. Kessel says she believes strongly that a healthy body and mind are keys to a rich life. “Intellectual stimulation and continuing to learn new things are essential to wellness,” she says. “Although lots of communities offer great amenities, they simply don’t compare with The Gatesworth. We don’t just talk about putting residents first, we live by it.”

what do you do to ensure every resident’s happiness? The Gatesworth makes sure that opportunities for enrichment are varied and frequent. Kessel lists the myriad lectures given by visiting experts, and the lively slate of entertainment. “We have lectures by professors and physicians, travel writers and people from the arts community. And wonderful performances by both local and national musicians,” she says. Physical fitness classes run the gamut from balance and stretching to Tai Chi and swimming. In addition, Kessel oversees The Gatesworth’s legendary holiday programming that includes delights like Breakfast with Santa, menorah lighting and visits from the Easter Bunny “The holidays are very special here,” she says. “What is truly exemplary about The Gatesworth is that it provides a continuum of care,” says Kessel, listing McKnight Place Extended Care, McKnight Place Assisted Living and Parc Provence memory care in Creve Coeur. In addition, the new McKnight Place Assisted Living Expansion currently is in construction on The Gatesworth campus, and is set to open in the fall of this year. “With 90 assisted living units and 27 memory care units, it will make our campus even more complete,” Kessel says. “If you live in a retirement community rather than your own home, I believe you can extend your life five, seven, even 10 years,” Kessel says. “That’s why doing this right and providing people with so many opportunities for intellectual stimulation and meaningful connection is so important.”

RetReat by KARyN WILLIAMS | photoS by Suzy goRMAN

After 21 years in New York, St. Louis natives John and Nancy Quicke recently returned to their Midwest roots. They were on a mission to find a Clayton house that met a reasonable list of expectations. While the couple was drawn to the charm of older homes in the area, they wanted a more modern, open floor plan and didn’t want to be bothered with upkeep. In the end, they discovered a builder who gave them both. Through a team effort, they created a threebedroom oasis with access to all the city has to offer.

T&S | Why did you choose Clayton? NaNcy Quicke | We originally lived in West County after we were married, before moving to Chappaqua, New York, in 1993. When we decided to move back in 2013, we liked the Clayton area for the ability to walk to restaurants, shopping and even the government center! That's what intrigued us about the area. And one of our sons lives in the U. City area. T&S | When did you decide to build? NQ | We wanted a house where we could entertain family and friends easily, and we just weren't finding what we were looking for. Our builder, Mike Rechan of Michael Lauren Development, had some properties for sale, and we loved the style of his homes. They all had the older charm we admired. We also liked the architect he works with, Paul Doerner of Lawrence Group, who was very involved with the design of the home. T&S | Building a home can be a trying time. How was the process overall? NQ | Everyone was so lovely to work with. I can't say enough about Mike and his entire team. We hired Elizabeth Glazer as our interior designer, and it really was a group effort. She was so instrumental in getting all the furnishings and helping choose the finishes. John and I had to do a lot of it long distance, and everyone made it so easy. Michael Lauren also built the homes of our two next-door neighbors; the community is really appreciative of having beautiful homes as opposed to the abandoned structure that was there before!

T&S | What 'must-haves' were on your list? NQ | A wet bar was important to us, as well as a hearth room. I really wanted an area that was separate from the TV room and easily accessed from the kitchen. It's a great reading area. John and I both wanted office spaces that were close enough to communicate with each other. And he didn't want his to be stuck in the back, away from all the action! T&S | It all looks very calm. Were you going for a certain style? NQ | I don't like a cluttered look and tend to keep things simple and clean. Our house in New York was traditional, so I wanted something different but not contemporary. My style is transitional: modern, with the softness of some traditional looks. We only brought one piece with us: a nice blue sofa that I recently had recovered, so the color scheme came from that. Gray and blue tones went well together.

I don’t like a cluttered look and tend to keep things simple and clean.

T&S | The dining room is very dramatic. NQ | Paul came up with that idea, and Mike didn't know how we would react, but we fell in love with it. We didn't want the dining room to be tucked away and not used. This way, it's a focal point with its open ceiling. I seated 24 people there for Thanksgiving, and I just hosted a birthday lunch for my 85-year-old mother and 21 of her friends. I simply add an extension or two onto the table since there's plenty of room. The entire house is conducive to entertaining. T&S | The powder room is unique as well. NQ | I loved that tile on the back wall but thought it might be too busy for the entire space. So Elizabeth found the perfect wallpaper to complement it. I think powder rooms should be dramatic since they're so small, and I like them to have a converted chest with a bowl sink instead of a typical vanity. T&S | Do you have a favorite room? NQ | I'm really happy with how the master bedroom turned out, especially the tray ceiling. And I love the molding Elizabeth added to the walls. It's fairly large, but with all these touches, the room still feels comforting and cozy.

I think powder rooms should be dramatic since they’re so small.

[HOMEWORK: t i d e r c a extr DEAR HOMEWORK,

I have recently moved into a very interesting U-shaped ranch in West County. I have transformed the dated interior and now need to move to the exterior. I have two questions: the first is how to transform the front façade’s look from dull to dramatic with minimal expense. Next, I would like to add a pool house structure to the home’s standout feature—a courtyard with swimming pool. I would love to have a simple, elegant structure that would have sliding/ stacking doors and a simple multiuse space. Could this look good? I’m also considering rebuilding the pool. Sincerely, —EXTERIOR U-TURN

DEAR EXTERIOR U-TURN,

Your issues are so extensive that I have saved them for an Extra Credit column. Having a house surrounding a swimming pool in this area is truly unique, so I would like to be of help. To begin with, your front façade is a bit tired, but there is a lot we can do without changing it totally. The focus should be on the front door. The arched frame looks so dated that I would like to start over. We need a bit of a vertical accent, so I would suggest a gabled porch that follows the existing roof shape and side walls that mimic the handsome new front door you’ve added. I also would use plantings to add additional verticality in the windowless corners. A low brick retaining wall with light piers helps keep the focus on the entry and drive drop-off. A coat of charcoal gray paint brings the final layer of ‘cool’ to the scheme. The pool house will work well here because it reinforces the feeling of a courtyard. A simple gabled rectangle with huge folding doors and impressive night lighting will create a great effect. If you rebuild the pool, make it a simple rectangle and finish it off with a fire pit/fountain for maximum impact. Let the parties begin! —HOMEWORK

[ WHAT’ S IN YOUR ATTIC?]

THE TREASURE 〉〉 An enameled porcelain coffee service from Bavaria with six cups and saucers, six dessert plates, a creamer and sugar dish, and a lidded coffee pot, all decorated with sterling silver onlay.

THE STORY 〉〉 This set belongs to a Clayton homeowner, whose husband inherited it from

his grandmother in Balitmore. “The story is that it was brought in from Europe by the family, which was in the china business. My husband’s grandfather and his brothers at one time owned the Maryland China Company, which was a china distributor. I think it came into the family through that, maybe in the ’40s or ’50s.”

WHAT THE PROFESSIONALS SAY 〉〉 “Your coffee service is beautiful, the color is quite

vivid cobalt, and the silver overlay is a wonderful detail that further reinforces its Bavarian influence. Our Decorative Art Specialist has determined the following information about the coffee set: It is a Hutschenreuther Silver Overlay Coffee Dessert Set. The Hutschenreuther mark dates it to 1948-1970. The date at the mark, 1814, refers to when the company was

founded by Carolus Magnus Hutschenreuther, which also explains the initials ‘CM.’ The second mark (dated 1930-1950 and known as the anniversary mark) is for the overlay. With both these marks, we can firmly date the set from between 1951 and 1970. We found a reference for your family’s Maryland China Co., which started in 1910, and that could suggest how they came to own the service.”

VALUE 〉〉 “The retail market can ask strong prices for comparable sets of the same vintage, so it is hard to pinpoint a price, according to our experts. A set like this might be found at a retailer starting at $1,000, less on online sites.” THIS MONTH’S EXPERT: Leslie Hindman Auctioneers is headquartered in Chicago and has appraisal and auction services in Clayton.
