[ letter from the editor ]

A story in today’s paper sheds new light on a topic most people my generation are all too familiar with: settling our parents in senior communities. Much like telling your parents it’s time to hand over the car keys, talking to them about leaving their longtime home opens up a great, big can of worms. At least that has been my experience. But in this issue, a story in our senior living section shows it doesn’t have to be that way. One of the couples we interviewed had just moved into The Fountains in Chesterfield, and the wife, who was the spokesperson, was refreshingly philosophical about it. They had left their home of 40 years for the senior community, and instead of dwelling on what she gave up, this wise lady said she was focused on the future, not the past—good words to live by at any age, but especially older age when ailments, physical and emotional, can wear down the spirit. She called their move “a new chapter.” I just keep thinking of how very different her old age will be from those of my parents and in-laws, both of whom embraced their relocations with about as much joy as they would get from embracing a cactus. No one likes to face their own mortality—and giving up home and car make for a pretty rude awakening. But attitude is everything. We can do this the hard way, or the easy way—but only one of them is going to result in happy, tranquil golden years with friends and family.

[BOOK BONANZA Greater st. louis book fair West County Center

by tony di martino Readers, dust off your specs and lace up your walking shoes. The annual Greater St. Louis Book Fair takes place April 30 through May 3 in the parking garage at Macy’s, at West County Center. “It’s a book-lover’s paradise, featuring hundreds of thousands of new, gently used and rare books at bargain prices,” says director Marilyn Brown. “It’s the Midwest’s largest charity book fair, by far, and one of the nation’s biggest, oldest and most popular book events.” For more than 65 years, St. Louisans have marveled at the diverse, high-quality selection of books, records, movies, CDs and DVDs, limited magazines and ephemera found at the fair. “We cater to all ages and tastes, including fashionistas, local archeology buffs and comics fans,” Brown says. “Our inventory includes first, limited and out of print editions, signed copies and other treasures. We post the rare and collectible items on our website, but you never know what you’ll find once you start roaming around!” Collectible items are sold on a first-come, first-served basis, she notes. Five years ago, fair volunteers discovered an autographed first edition of Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms, worth $6,500, in a pile of anonymously donated books, Brown recalls. More recently, a fairgoer was delighted to find an original edition of Irma Rombauer’s The Joy of Cooking from 1931. Among the many treasures up for sale this year are a copy of The Fire Next Time, signed by author James Baldwin, a 1939 edition of Cowboys North and South, signed by author Will James, a first edition of A Guide to Audubon’s Birds of America, and a limited edition of Valentino, signed by the famed fashion designer. “And Bob Costas has donated a big collection of sports books, many signed by famed athletes,” Brown adds. Fair proceeds go to a wide range of local education and literacy programs for the underserved, including ACCESS Academies reading program, First Book St. Louis, Ready Readers, and Webster University Student Literacy Corps. “We’re honored to serve as a presenting sponsor of the Greater St. Louis Book Fair,” says Sean Phillips, regional marketing director of CBL & Associates Properties, parent company of West County Center. “Literacy is crucial to the prosperity of our region, and we support it wholeheartedly. St. Louis is good to us, and we appreciate the opportunity to give back to the community.” Readers who are downsizing and need to pare down their bookshelves can drop off new or gently used books at four locations: the parking lot at the northwest corner of Forsyth Boulevard and Jackson Avenue in Clayton; the lot near Macy’s south entrance at St. Louis Galleria; the area next to Macy’s loading dock at South County Center; and the area opposite Macy’s loading dock at West County Center. “At the fair, books are arranged by category,” Brown says. “It’s a great way to pursue your interests and explore new ones—and maybe meet someone who’s interested in the same thing!” march 18, 2015 | townandstyle.com

by bill beggs jr.

Manchester Road continued on its way to becoming a Great Street on Monday (March 16)— overnight. No, that doesn’t mean it suddenly became a great street by Tuesday. Workers will be laboring in the wee hours to transform ‘St. Louis’ Main Street’ from a traffic challenge into a well-landscaped thoroughfare with better medians, turn lanes and signage, among other things, including improved sidewalks. They had to start sometime, and somewhere. Sometime is doing the work at night, and somewhere is at the Ellisville city limits, from whence they will head east into Ballwin. About 100 yards of median will be replaced each work night, which to us seems lickety-split, all things considered. What does this mean for now? Many drivers will be grumpier than usual, especially those wishing to make left turns at points along the route as the project progresses, because to replace and improve the median, workers will need space to operate; by and large, in the left lane. The big picture? Planners say a ‘great street’ takes into account all modes of transportation—public, bicycle, pedestrian—moving us from our ingrained, auto-centric approach to business and recreation (and, shopping). For the time being, MoDOT officials say drivers on the section of roadway between state highways 141 and 109 will need to proceed to the nearest intersection with a traffic signal to make a U-turn and backtrack to their destination. Or anyone intent on doing it the hard way could just take the next right because, you know, three rights make a left. Next time you’re at Straub’s in Town & Country shopping for body fuel, you might want to head around to the back of the building on the lower level and check out Silver Lining, which offers fuel for the soul. The ‘soul food’ sold here includes inspirational products: books, jewelry, apparel, cards, organic health and beauty products, art, gifts, home decor ... all designed to satisfy a body and spirit’s minimum daily requirement of joy. The unique boutique celebrated its grand opening earlier this month at 13418 Clayton Road. As you might imagine, much of what’s available here does not exist solely on the physical plane. It’s also a gathering space that provides opportunities for classes and workshops in spiritual yoga, meditation and ‘energy work.’ The good vibes generated here may help you hone your intuition—you might even discover, or rediscover, your true purpose. (Maybe it’s not pharmaceutical sales, commercial banking or law, after all.) Practitioners affiliated with Silver Lining provide anything from health and wellness training to life coaching and hypnosis. Indeed, this ‘inspired space’ is entrancing.

In the 1940s the building started out as a school. Then, after Creve Coeur acquired it in the 1980s, it was retrofitted to become the city’s government center and police station, with other renovations and additions over the years. But city officials and a citizens task force say it is now obsolete—cramped, to say the least. Architects also say its aesthetics leave much to be desired, that the facility is about as welcoming as the word ‘facility.’ All, if not most, of these issues will be addressed in the project to reinvent the complex at 300 N. New Ballas Road. Several approaches are under consideration, from a major renovation to a brand-new center and police station on the same property. Observers say it does feel a little imposing in its present incarnation, or

patient and assist the medical team, so as to avoid sedation wherever possible. The suite, which a hospital spokesperson says is the only one of its kind in the metro, will allow technicians and doctors to view nuclear imaging and computed tomography at the same time resulting in a more precise and efficient diagnosis. Have you seen the world map where each McDonald’s restaurant is represented by a pinpoint of light? In 2007 there were 34,000-some worldwide, about 11,400 of them in the U.S. of A. We light up real good. Perhaps it’s not a fair comparison, but it seems like one day there will be as many Starbucks locations. If there’s a map of them, I haven’t seen it, but there are more of the

creve coeur

at least seems too close to the road. Options vary and, of course, come with different price tags, from about $10 million for a major expansion to $15.5 million to build anew. While new taxes to pay off $16 million in bonds could be one way to complete the project, the task force and city continue to weigh options. Some youngsters get nervous just going to the doctor. You can imagine how their anxiety level increases if they have to be in the hospital. SSM Cardinal Glennon addressed this in its new $1.6 million pediatric nuclearimaging suite, not only with ambient lighting, but with age-appropriate distractions to help calm the

beloved (and reviled) coffeehouses in the nation than of the behemoth burger chain—12,100 places where you can have a $5 latte! Now, I love Starbucks as much as the next person, but residents of the neighborhoods near the intersection of Manchester and Bopp roads (the coffeehouse would be located at 11781 Manchester, in the Reliance Bank building) aren’t so sure they want the one that’s proposed for that location. At a board of aldermen meeting last month, not a single resident spoke out in favor of the proposal, especially if it is to include a drive-thru lane. Starbucks’ traffic study, which the company presented at last week’s aldermanic board meeting, gave a wide range of the number of cars expected: 200 to 400, which they characterized as ‘low.’

[ TT Trivia ] Hey, kids! For which common substance is NaCl the chemical formula?

Last issue’s answer | The ‘BRDG’ in Danforth Center’s BRDG Park stands for Bio-Research & Development Growth Park. Pronounce it like ‘bridge’— appropriate, since startups here grow from viable concepts to bio-science companies ready to market their goods and services.

sunset hills

Well, OK, but we’re not so sure that a company nearly as big as Ronald’s would really choose a location with a low traffic count. Neither would its shareholders. At any rate, a vote by the full council is expected March 23. What goes better with a cold beer or soda than a hot pretzel? Why, nothing, Gus would say. So would the folks at Auntie Anne’s, Wetzel’s … and Pretzel Boys. Looks like the paperwork is about complete to start on a second area franchise of Pretzel Boys, a Philly-headquartered dough purveyor that opened its first store in the metro four years ago, in Des Peres. Sunset Hills looks to be the second site for the company, also to be run by Matt and Tim Garvey, the latter of whom sold hot pretzels at Busch to hungry and thirsty Cardinals fans as a bit younger fellow. The space, at 3802 S. Lindbergh Blvd., used to be a hair salon. Don’t know about you, but for your faithful scribe the most work involved in consuming a pretzel consists of trying to rub all the salt off. Beverage and pretzel purveyors must give each other high-fives, or at least knowing winks, before every game. You can get them salt-free at most mall places, where they actually leave some fresh ones plain for those of us not too keen on an NaCl overload, which can then lead to imbibing too much soda … or worse, beer. (Have brews reached $10 yet at the ballpark?) Webster Groves has introduced a city bill that in essence says it’s mad as hell and isn’t going to take it anymore— that is, fiscal bullying by big, retail-rich cities like Chesterfield. In December, Chesterfield filed a lawsuit against the state of Missouri (in Cole County) that asserts the distribution of sales taxes in the county is unconstitutional. Webster is a ‘pool’ city that stands to lose about $3 million annually in sales-tax revenue if Chesterfield prevails and manages to have the current formula revised, Webster city officials say. With a considerable retail presence, Chesterfield is considered a ‘point of sale’ municipality, as are Kirkwood, Fenton and Des Peres. Chesterfield has long claimed that, since it aggressively pursues economic development, etc., it should be able to contribute less to or receive back more from the county sales-tax pool. Gerry Welch, mayor of Webster Groves, recently testified in Jeff City against proposed legislation that could change how sales taxes are redistributed locally. Other pool cities that already have joined forces to oppose Chesterfield’s move are Wildwood, Ballwin and Florissant. They would share the cost of hiring an attorney from high-powered firm Lewis, Rice & Fingersh to make their case. At this writing, Webster’s full council was to have voted on the measure last night (March 17).

Peace of MindWhat a Gift!

by karyn meyer

About the club Sandy Glassman and her friend Liz Linkon have a simple explanation for why they began Novel Women: they love to read. “Since we’re such voracious readers, we just contacted a few people about starting a book club,” Glassman says. “We started out with a small group back in 2008 and then more people heard about it and wanted to join, so now we have quite a few women!” The group meets at Westwood Country Club once a month, and Glassman says usually everyone has read the selected book and participates in the discussion. “We switch leaders each month, so everybody gets a turn,” she says. And once a discussion starts, opinions often change among members. “There have been quite a few surprises where most of us haven’t liked a book going into the meeting, but once we all started talking about it, we discovered there were lots of positive aspects.” The women previously had given high marks to the other two books in Ken Follett’s The Century Trilogy, so Edge of Eternity was a logical choice for the club. About the book Edge of Eternity is the third book in

Welsh-born author Ken Follett’s The Century Trilogy, which follows five intertwined families (American, German, Russian, English and Welsh) throughout the 20th century. The final book covers the third generation during a tumultuous time in history, from the 1960s through the 1980s. The main characters become involved in the major global events of that time period, including the Civil Rights movement, the Cuban missile crisis, Vietnam, the Berlin Wall, Watergate and the JFK administration.

[ opinions ]

>>“While often gripping, Ken Follett’s very, very long Edge of Eternity lies somewhere between saga

and soap opera. Filled with vivid descriptions and accounts of the turbulent historical moments between 1961 through 1989, plus an epilogue regarding the election of President Obama in 2008, this last piece of historical fiction, laced with sex and scandal, falls short of his previous tomes.” — JUDY KAPLAN >“Ken Follett is an excellent author. In Edge of Eternity, he once again combines history and characters you have come to know through all three of his books.” —SANDY GLASSMAN

My friend loves her dog and kisses it on the nose. She will then turn to kiss me or one of her friends. How do I nicely explain to her that I find this practice disgusting? —No Puppy Love

Patty: Really? I must admit I am a dog kisser. People, not so much. I find my dog Stella, while completely

annoying and self-absorbed, is always available for a quick kiss on her nose and a rub of her ears. You have to come from a family of kissers and huggers to hug and kiss your friends. I don’t, so I will stick with the dog. It is easier and there’s less rejection. But I guess I didn’t answer your question. Tell her you think it is disgusting, but don’t be surprised if, like me, she chooses the dog.

Raschelle: EEEEWWWWW!! Yes, this is vile. I, too, am a dog lover, but I also understand that dogs are gross. Just the other day my adorable puppy ran toward me with some kind of hind quarter in her mouth. Yes, your read that right: she had part of an animal—I saw what looked like a squirrel leg, hip and possibly a tail, in her mouth, touching her tongue—the same tongue she would be licking me with. She was proud of it. And that is why we do not kiss dogs. The End!

When I get a text from one of my friends, I will promptly call them and my call will be sent directly to voice mail. I think this is rude. If they are available to text, why aren’t they available to talk? —Miss Hearing Their Voices

Patty: Perhaps they are texting you from church? I don’t know why people do this and I would like to rage about how cell phones have made us all rude, inconsiderate people, but I must admit I was that way before cell phones were invented. I can remember feeling nothing but relief when I would get someone’s voicemail at work. I could leave a message, avoid a conversation and small talk, and just get on with my day. If they were one of those people who promptly calls back, I would immediately go get my sixth Diet Coke of the day so they would in turn get my voicemail. Sometimes people just don’t want to talk. I say, be happy with any form of communication you get from people. Raschelle: What is the matter with you? Why on earth would you immediately call someone back in response to a text? Are you sharpening your stalking skills? Clearly you need some lessons on modern communication. So here you go: they are texting you because they do not want to talk to you. Do not be confused about this rule. It is 100 percent true, 100 percent of the time. In fact, this is why texting was invented: to help us avoid talking to people without the risk of being completely isolated for life. My best advice is to join the rest of us in 2015 and meet your friends and loved ones where they are. If they text, you text back. If they call, you decide how to respond. Do not, I repeat, do not call someone back immediately following a text. There is no greater phone faux pas than that.

» Patty Hannum’s hates small talk unless she is the one doing it. » Raschelle Burton hasn’t checked voice mail since 2005. So you should stop waiting for that call back!

the fun at Old Bags, the ultimate girls night out, April 28 at the Hilton Frontenac, to benefit the Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition. Co-chairs are Holly Demerath and Connie Lohr. This year, the Coalition is celebrating its 25th anniversary and there will be a surprise addition to the party. Guests can look forward to more than 500 new or gently used designer handbags in a silent auction, including bags from Louis Vuitton, Prada, Dior, Gucci, and Marc Jacobs, among many other sought-after labels. Ticket price includes hors d’oeuvres, an open bar and decadent chocolates. Mystery bags add to the fun, with chances to win a brand new designer bag costing $250. Proceeds from the event support the Coalition’s important mission of finding forever families for children in foster care. It is dedicated to matching nurturing, caring families with all kids, no matter their age, emotional or developmental concerns, and to providing critical support services and training for foster/adoptive parents. Since 1989, the Coalition has found families for 2,500 children. So, what to wear? The event is on a Tuesday night, and many will be coming from work. So work attire or a short evening dress is acceptable. The theme is pink and green—happy and bright colors. That means you should think floral prints—and, of course, be sure to bring your favorite handbag! Q: Mod is back. what will that mean for curvier women? A: This trend can be fun and easy to interpret. Look for pop-art prints, black and white patterns or solids, collared dresses, shift dresses, double-breasted jackets, fishnet tights, chunky low heels and patent leather boots. Take a retro piece and mix with a modern style. At a certain age, it’s probably best to leave the mini-skirt in your wardrobe archives.

5-STAR MEALS the gatesworth by stephanie zeilenga photo:the gatesworth

To truly live the good life, some things are simply nonnegotiable: access to

delicious, fresh food, being in good health, and having a vibrant social and family life top the list. For six years, Martha Kenton hasn’t had to worry about doing without any of this. That’s because she’s been living at The Gatesworth. The kitchen’s willingness to accommodate individual preferences—and its emphasis on fresh, made-to-order foods—have been a highlight of Kenton’s time in the senior living community. The Gatesworth chefs use only the freshest ingredients, Kenton says. Breads and desserts are baked in-house, and the meat is butchered on site. Not surprising, this approach keeps residents coming back for more. “When I moved in, I thought the food might get tiresome, but it hasn’t,” Kenton says. “It’s like living in a fivestar hotel. There are two specials each night, and it’s always a nice variety.” Some of her favorite things to order are the grilled petite filet, the salmon and the Cobb salad. For dessert, she usually enjoys warm, fresh-out-of-the-oven caramel rolls. Even though the dining rooms at The Gatesworth offer an extensive restaurant-style menu for lunch and dinner, special requests are no problem, whether it’s modifying a menu item or ordering something completely off-menu. One of Kenton’s favorite special orders is souffle. “You have to order it the day before,” she says. “It’s wonderful. One time I had out-of-town guests and called early in the morning, and they were still able to have the souffle ready for me.” It’s not rare to see family members and friends come to The Gatesworth to dine with residents, and Kenton is not alone in regularly inviting her children to join her for meals.

Cindy Heuermann and her son Matthew visit HER mother, Martha Kenton, at The Gatesworth.

There are multiple dining rooms to choose from, including the formal Colonnade and the more casual Palm Court Restaurant. “Guests love the food, and it’s nice to have my daughters eat in the Colonnade—the food is so good for lunch,” Kenton says. Besides lunch, family often will visit for Sunday brunch or Friday happy hour, which includes cocktails and appetizers like drumsticks—a favorite of Kenton’s young grandson. “We have a good time eating there,” says Kenton’s daughter, Cindy Heuermann, who visits at least once a week. “We try to go every Friday to enjoy one of the happy hours, and our little boy has always been welcome.” When residents wish to have a more intimate meal with their loved ones, they can request one of the private dining rooms. Heuermann fondly remembers using a private room for her late father’s birthday party years ago. “It was a wonderful celebration, and the food was great,” she says. “It was so nice to be able to have our whole family together.” And when her son was baptized, the family held the reception at The Gatesworth. “Family members are welcome for anything at The Gatesworth, especially when it comes to dining,” Heuermann says.

Pictured on the cover: Cindy Heuermann and her mother, Martha Kenton, a resident at The Gatesworth, a senior living community located at One McKnight Place. The Gatesworth residents enjoy fresh, restaurant-style food, and family members and friends are always welcome. For more information, call 314.993.0111 or visit thegatesworth.com. A NEW STAGE

by stephanie zeilenga | photos by bill barrett

No matter the circumstances, moving is stressful. For those relocating to a senior living community, the change can seem overwhelming, especially because the move usually means leaving behind a place they’ve called home for decades. Read how two couples handled the change, and how their new homes made the transition a little easier.

Kay & Ken Hopson The Fountains Needing the extra help offered by The Fountains’ memory care unit, Kay and Ken Hopson moved into the senior living community just a few weeks ago. “We knew it was the right place almost immediately,” Kay Hopson says. “So far, it’s gone beyond our expectations. We’ve adjusted pretty quickly. If we’re together, we can do it.” Saying goodbye to their home of four decades was difficult, she admits. “Selling a house is never easy, but The Fountains sent someone to look at our furniture and see how it would fit in our new place—having our own things made it easier,” Kay says. “Downsizing is hard, but so far we haven’t missed anything we didn’t bring.” Leaving their home also has meant shedding responsibilities that had become increasingly burdensome. “Home ownership is the American dream, but you reach an age where the problems start outweighing the benefits,” she says. “It’s a relief to be out from under those responsibilities.”

Mary & Wallace Diboll The Gatesworth For Mary and Wallace Diboll, residents of The Gatesworth, leaving their home of more than half a century was not easy. The senior living community, however, did all it could to make the transition better. “Their moving specialist, Mary Kidwell, is absolutely amazing,” Mary says. “She takes pictures of your furniture, and places what she thinks will work in the new apartment. She listens to your feedback and works with the movers. It’s all amazingly smooth.”

Mobility matters. U.S. News & World Report ranked Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital as high performing in orthopedics for the fourth Since moving to The Fountains, the Hopsons also are now free from the daily drudgery of chores and getting meals on the table. “I feel like I’ve been on vacation for three weeks—and I have no intention of using the pots and pans we brought,” Kay says. “Our kitchen is fully equipped, but I’m not interested. You just go to the dining room and order off the menu. They’ve even got white tablecloths and napkins. How much better can it get?” Although the Hopsons had to leave some of their possessions behind, they’ve gained much more than they’ve given up. “It was getting quiet at our house. My husband has just blossomed since we came here,” Kay says. “Most people are friendly, and I don’t think anyone could be lonely here for long.” For those thinking of making the change, she has some sage words. “You have to have an attitude that the past is the past, and this is a new chapter,” she says. “We’re looking forward to tomorrow instead of thinking of yesterday.”

year in a row. We have some of the region’s top orthopedic surgeons who perform more than 1,000 hip and knee replacements each year — a statistic that equates to better results. It’s why some of our patients travel as much as 250 miles for care right here at Olive and Mason. Knowing restored mobility can make a huge difference in your quality of life, why would you go anywhere else?

The couple sorely misses their vibrant University City neighborhood, says Wallace, but the location of The Gatesworth—just a little more than a mile from their old home— also has helped. “We wanted to stay in the neighborhood, and that was a big part of our decision,” he says. They say living at The Gatesworth simply makes life easier. “There’s much less to worry about,” Mary says. “You just call maintenance and someone comes to fix whatever your problem is.” And it certainly doesn’t hurt that the Diboll apartment is spacious, with plenty of natural light. “We love that our kitchen is big and well-equipped, and our apartment has lots of light,” Mary says. “We have windows and doors on one side of the living and dining room, and a bay window in the bedroom. We like light, so that’s been nice for us.” For those contemplating a move to a senior living community, the Dibolls have some advice. “The most important thing is to figure out your finances,” Mary says. “You have to get your priorities in order so you know what you absolutely must have in terms of amenities and services. Here, you pay monthly rent, but other communities are set up differently. After that, visit the community and talk to people.”

on-trend west county center by tony di martino

The first day of spring arrives in a few days, and even though winter hasn’t quite released its icy grip, those fuzzy sweaters and fleece-lined jackets are already starting to look so last season. “If you’re ready to update your wardrobe and winter-weary outlook, West County Center has everything you need,” says marketing director Justine Robinson. “Along with our outstanding lineup of top-tier shops, we’re gearing up for spring and summer by opening two new stores and an exciting addition at Nordstrom.” Last month, Nordstrom began carrying shoes by Topshop, the British fast-fashion chain beloved by fashion editors, rockers, and trend-setting Kates such as Middleton and Moss. Clothing and accessories will be added next month. “It’s a young, vibrant line, catering to fashion enthusiasts looking for on-trend fashion options at an accessible price,” Robinson explains. “The line is exclusively available in St. Louis at Nordstrom, so it’s bound to make one of our most popular stores even more of a draw.” Another welcome addition is Lush Fresh Handmade Cosmetics, scheduled to open on the upper level near Macy’s this month. “Lush is a leader in natural, organic cosmetics, perfumes, soaps and shampoos, and the amazing scents and luxurious textures can transform any bathroom into your very own mini spa,” Robinson says. “It’s the ideal choice for anyone who wants to welcome spring with an indulgent new personal-care routine.” And construction recently began on an Ivivva Athletica store, one of only 13 in the entire country. “Ivivva, a division of Lululemon, is the premier destination for young girls’ activewear,” Robinson says. “The brand encourages and celebrates movement by designing pieces for every sport and activity.” The high-quality line is as practical as it is colorful and stylish, she adds. “They use high-performance, moisture-wicking fabric with serious stretch, so you’ll look and feel great while you’re working out.” The store, scheduled to open in early summer, will occupy 750 square feet on the mall’s upper level.

These new stores join other recent additions to West County Center, including Gap, GapKids and Banana Republic. Altar’d State, which opened late last year, offers a wide array of women’s apparel, accessories and gifts. “CBL & Associates Properties, the center’s parent company, takes pride in attracting major national retailers like The North Face to the center, while also welcoming locally owned businesses like Geranium, a boutique that features upscale brands at incredible prices, and Sweet & Sassy, a children’s salon and spa,” Robinson notes. Time-tested favorites such as Brooks Brothers, Ann Taylor, Francesca’s and The Limited continue to delight style-conscious shoppers. Calibrating the right mix of stores for fashion-savvy West Countians is both an art and a science, Robinson notes. “At CBL Properties, we constantly monitor sales, evaluate tenants, and connect with consumers via Facebook and Twitter to make sure we’re delivering what they want: the latest trends right off the runway. It’s our job to know what you want—before you know you want it.”

Tableside Guacamole, Tortilla Soup, Chile-Rubbed Shrimp Skewers

This new cantina in the Galleria is the second

St. Louis spot owned by the restaurateurs who brought Canyon Café to Plaza Frontenac years ago. Based in Arizona, they have only five restaurants total: two here, the rest in Arizona and Texas. The food is generally authentic-tasting, albeit a little on the spicy side. The guacamole ($11) is made tableside by your server, who asks your consent before mashing a dozen or so ingredients into the ripe avocados. It was creamy and delicious, filled with jalapenos, bell peppers, red and white onions, spices, tomatoes and more. The Tortilla Soup ($5) also packs a punch. It looks innocent enough, with its slightly creamy broth, queso fresco and tomato bits floating around, but there is heat in there. What I did not see, however, were any tortilla strips! An enchiladas platter of Carnitas Ranchero ($12) was overall quite tasty, its two corn tortillas filled with shredded pork. On top was a delicious ranchero sauce, tomato-based but with good layered flavors, including cumin and hot pepper. A drizzle of queso fresco was

on top, and as a base, sautéed Mexican rice and beans, which were rich and flavorful. A standout dish was the Chile-Rubbed Shrimp Skewers ($18), which were decent-sized shrimp heavily rubbed with a blackening spice—with the emphasis on spice. The shrimp were sweet, and the rub was spicy. Also on the skewers were some grilled onion chunks and grilled tomatoes. The skewers (two of them, holding six shrimp total) lay atop Cabana rice, white rice dotted with a medley of oven-roasted veggies, including bell peppers and zucchini. A nice touch was the mound of fruit salsa on the plate, which provided an acidic complement of marinated pineapple and cantaloupe. Also good was a special called Adobo Shrimp ($12), a tortilla filled with small shrimp in the flavorful red adobo sauce (chilies, herbs and vinegar) and cheese. It tasted something like a cheese quesadilla flavored with shrimp and red chilies. A side of beans and rice was tasty; I especially liked the beans, which were saucey and sat in a fluted corn tortilla cup.

Alas, an order of Street & Beach Tacos was disappointing. Each of our three tacos ($11) came with too much cabbage/lettuce and not enough of the featured protein—or anything else, for that matter. The Lobster taco’s bits of cold lobster were totally lost in shredded ‘slaw,’ and the Blackened Mahi taco offered only a couple strips of fish, well-seasoned, atop a taco jammed with greens. Although each had a tiny bit of spicy mayo or some such ‘sauce,’ the abundance of shredded greens completely cancelled any benefits the sauce might have provided. And the Mole Chicken taco came only as a clump of shredded white meat stuck together with a pasty sauce tasting way too much of chocolate. Where were the diced tomatoes, avocados and salsa? A dessert of Mexican flan ($6) hit the spot. One thing I must mention is the service, which, while very courteous, simply fell short. Our server kept forgetting to bring items we asked for: an extra spoon, more water, etc., and he did not fully understand the food, hence was unable to answer our questions. Poor training or just plain inefficiency? Hard to tell which.

Front&Center] by donna parrone

The concept of justice was explored in two plays recently, Terence Rattigan’s The Winslow Boy at The Rep and Rob Maesaka’s White to Gray at Mustard Seed. The Winslow Boy concerns itself with a single young naval cadet wrongfully accused of stealing a five schilling postal note; he is eventually exonerated and his name is cleared. It’s right, it’s justice, but it cost the family all their savings; the father, his health; the sister, her marriage; and the brother, his education. In White to Gray, the plot gives us a privation of justice with a broader scope, the abasement of Japanese Americans immediately after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The Winslow Boy had an excellent ensemble of actors, and I’m always acutely attracted to shows where the actors are balanced in expertise and impetus—credit there should be given to the admirable direction of Steven Woolf. If the show had ‘stars,’ they were John Ezell’s set and Dorothy Marshall Englis’ costumes. The set was imposing and stylish, one could even say posh. The costumes made you wish they were still the fashion. In general, I take issue with Rattigan’s conception of justice. While absolution may have cost much, at least the family had much to give. If the same had happened in Cheapside, some other mother’s son would have been hauled off to jail, with neither justice nor right available at a poor man’s discount. White to Gray is a work in progress. The first act is complete, with skilled dialogue and clear plot. The energy between Ben Nordstrom and Fox Smith, as the ingénues, and Nordstrom and Charlie Barron, as best friends, was robust and exhilarating. Paige Russell’s Mrs. Yoshido was a great foil for the action. It’s the second act where we lose a bit of the grace. The conflict feels manipulated and forced, the dialogue devolves into cliché. Luckily, Maesaka was in the audience opening night and, hopefully, realized where the piece still needs some attention. Dunsai Dai’s set and choreographed changes were delightful and worth noting. Andrew Michael Neiman is back in town and created quite a stir in the heart of this writer with his The Nina Variations by Steven Dietz, presented by Neiman’s new company, Flying Blind Productions. Dietz’s play is a riff on Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull. His anti-heroine, Nina (played exquisitely by Taylor Steward), rewrites the ending between herself and Treplev, (another delicate portrayal by Leo B. Ramsey) over and over. She IS the seagull, but together they are all youth, searching for an original voice in a world where nothing is new. Dietz’s theme is worth discussion, and under Neiman’s dexterous hand, The Nina Variations gives us youthful passion and folly in abundance. I wish more people had seen this play.

Figuring out how to look good for a night out on the town is difficult when you can’t see your reflection. That’s just one of the problems plaguing the four vampire roommates in What We Do in the Shadows, a comedy-horror mockumentary set in Wellington, New Zealand. Naturally, the vampires are concerned with finding human prey, but they also squabble over chores and are in search of a good time. At night, they roam the town dressed in leather pants, ruffles and big fur coats, woefully out of touch with today’s fashions. And of course, they can get into nightclubs only if they’re invited in. Much of the movie’s humor comes from scenes with Stu, a regular-human computer programmer who becomes friends with the vampires, who in turn restrain themselves from killing him simply because they like him. That, and Stu can teach them useful things about modern technology, like how to YouTube videos of the sunrise. Mockumentaries and vampires are overdone these days, but the combination here of deadpan humor, fully realized characters, and mixing the supernatural with the everyday world really works. This film feels fresher—and funnier—than anything that’s come out in recent memory. Should You See It? Yes! —S.Z.

better breasts for summer If you’re dreading putting on a bikini because you’re too big in some spots and too little in others,

check with a good plastic surgeon. You might be surprised to discover the possible solutions. Often it’s a matter of proportion: small breasts can make full hips look too big, and overly large breasts can make you appear bigger in every way than you actually are. Experts say after a breast enhancement or reduction, you should be completely recovered and ready to hit the beach within four to six weeks. GO BIG, OR NOT Women have more options than ever when it comes to breast implants. While some still request very firm, full, forever-21 breasts, the trend right now is to opt for a more natural-looking implant. “We can help women get the look they are after. In my practice, I have fewer women wanting that very ‘augmented’ look and more wanting an enhancement with a natural augmentation,” says Dr. Marissa Tenenbaum, director of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Washington University School of Medicine. “As women live longer and healthier lives, their desire to look better no matter what their age also increases,” says Dr. Michele Koo, plastic surgeon with Aesthetic & Hand Surgery Institute. “The sizes requested are as varied as the number of women who request them. But the age for first-time breast augmentation is increasing significantly. The age and lifestyle of the patient tends to determine the requested size rather than popular trends or what is in social media.” CHOOSE CAREFULLY In addition to the traditional round silicone and saline implants, there now are teardrop-shaped gel implants that have been available in Europe for the past few years. Fat grafting is another option for women wanting a modest enhancement, although Tenenbaum says the practice is controversial in terms of safety and results.

Board-certified experts: John Chi, MD(left) and Gregory Branham, MD

Choosing the right size and shape has been made easier by advancements in preoperative planning, where surgeons can use 3-D simulations to help patients actually see what they would be getting. “Honoring your body’s dimensions when choosing shape and size is critical to a natural outcome,” Tenenbaum says. LIFTS A breast-lift removes excess skin and repositions the nipple-areolar complex to the middle of the breast mound, Koo explains. Lifts need to be done in conjunction with breast reductions, but they also are a popular choice in other circumstances, like for women whose breasts are altered significantly after multiple childbirths or after losing large amounts of weight. RISK V. REWARD According to Koo, breast reductions get ever safer as the understanding of the blood supply in the breast is better understood. “The scars have changed, and rarely do patients need to spend an overnight stay or require drains.” Tenenbaum says patients commonly ask how long implants will last. It’s also one of the most difficult questions to answer. Implants can last anywhere from 10 to 30 or more years. The newer gel implants seem to be sturdier and last longer, too, she says. Even beyond 30 years, if a woman is doing well and there is no rupture, there is no reason to return to surgery. Signs of implant rupture include hardening (capsular contractures) and breast distortion. The most important thing for getting the best results is do your homework, advises Koo. She recommends asking for before and after photos, talking to previous patients and looking at patient reviews. You also want to find a surgeon who listens to you and truly cares about what you’re looking for.

do you dare to bare? Underarm sagging is a common problem that occurs with the natural aging of skin, decreased muscle tone and weight fluctuation. But unlike other parts of your body, you can’t always just diet or exercise your way to toned arms. If you’ve done more pushups than you care to count and still don’t like the way your arms look in a sleeveless top, it may be time for a more aggressive approach. The Joys of CoolSculpting For individuals who have good muscle tone and just a little extra weight on their arms, liposuction and the nonsurgical alternative, CoolSculpting, are two options to consider. “CoolSculpting is a great alternative for busy people who cannot or will not undergo surgery,” says Molly DuBro, a physician assistant at Nayak Plastic Surgery. “With CoolSculpting, we can freeze away stubborn fat in many areas, such as the underarms, abdomen, love handles, and thighs. CoolSculpting alone can offer a 30 percent reduction of fat without the invasive procedure of an upper arm-lift and absolutely no downtime. Clients are able to leave that day and resume their normal activities.” DuBro says the best candidates for CoolSculpting are those within 20 or 30 pounds of their goal weight who want to improve areas with ‘pinchable’ fat. The procedure is not painful and requires no downtime or recovery, but it will take four weeks to begin seeing results. How About Lipo? Liposuction offers more dramatic and rapid results, but it is a surgery and comes with all that entails: cutting, general anesthesia, scars and a recovery period. Following liposuction, patients wear compression garments for four to six weeks and generally have some bruising, according to Dr. Sumesh Kaswan, a SLUCare plastic surgeon. And if the problem is flabby skin, neither liposuction nor CoolSculpting will tighten loose skin. Interest in upper arm-lift (brachioplasty), which excises loose, sagging skin, has grown exponentially over the last 10 to 15 years, Kaswan reports. He credits its popularity to the increase in people losing extreme amounts of

weight through diet, exercise and/or gastric bypass surgery. Some patients also like to have an arm-lift with their liposuction. “The patients who get the best results from upper arm-lifts are those who have done their work beforehand—who have gotten to their ideal weight, or at least as close as they can get on their own— and exercised to build muscle tone. If you regain weight or continue to lose weight after the procedure, you’ll compromise the results,” Kaswan says. THE PROS/CONS OF ARM-LIFT For people who have lost an extreme amount of weight, upper arm-lifts can be the final step in their weight loss transformation. But it does not come without its drawbacks. Patients can expect to have pain and swelling for the first week and will not be able to return to a normal activity level for four to six weeks, the experts say. Patients also will have a scar, typically underneath their arm, from the arm pit (axilla) to the elbow. “Among all other cosmetic procedures, scars on the arms stay thick and red a lot longer,” Kaswan says. “It may take a year to a year-and-a-half to get to the final scar, and that has nothing to do with technique or the surgeon.” While there are things your doctor can do to modestly improve the scar, ultimately it is a trade-off—flabby skin or a scar.

laser skin resurfacing If you want to improve the quality of your skin by doing more than applying expensive creams

and serums, laser treatments could be the answer. To get appreciable results, you might need a series of treatments, and with most of these, you need to avoid sun for a period of time afterward. So to get in shape before that big summer vacation or family reunion, now’s the time to start.

THE POWER OF LASERS Laser skin resurfacing can reverse the signs of aging, sun damage and acne. It works by targeting the light energy of a specific wavelength to create controlled, precise injury to the skin, says Dr. Brock Ridenour, a facial plastic surgeon at Ridenour Plastic Surgery. “The injury stimulates the body’s natural healing process to make new collagen and elastin fibers, important in the thickness and elasticity of skin. Resurfacing also destroys old skin cells, which are replaced by the body’s progenitor cells (similar to stem cells).” Lasers come in two main forms: non-ablative and ablative. “Non-ablative devices do not cause significant injury to the surface layers of the skin and therefore recovery is quick and easy,” says Ridenour. “They pass through the upper layers to target problems below the surface, such as age spots, broken capillaries and unwanted hair. They also stimulate new collagen and tighten the skin.” They’re popular because they’re safe and easy and require limited or no downtime. “Patients may experience mild swelling, redness and the occasional light bruise,” Ridenour adds. Frequently, patients undergo multiple treatments to get the desired result. LESS IS MORE Ablative lasers, on the other hand, are intentionally more aggressive but will solve the problem with fewer treatments. Patients may experience light scabbing, crusting and/or oozing that can require ointments, bandages and a longer healing process. “These more aggressive devices are used to treat more advanced aging such as extensive loss of elasticity and deep lines and wrinkles. Most produce maximum results with a single

treatment,” Ridenour says. Healing takes one to two weeks, but the patient’s face can stay red for months. Other potential risks include scarring and changes in pigment, he explains. There also is a newer option, the CO2 fractional laser, which combines the effectiveness of the traditional ablative laser without the harsh side effects. “Instead of targeting the entire surface of the face, the fractional lasers take a fraction of the skin away,” says Dr. Joe Muccini, a dermatologist at Midamerica Skin, Health & Vitality Center. “It punches holes in the skin like an aerated golf course. Because some of the skin is left behind, the recovery is faster, about four days, and potential for scarring is less. You also can consider doing it again to end up with the same results of the traditional lasers.” THE IPL Intensive Pulse Light (IPL) devices often get grouped with lasers, but are not lasers, Muccini points out. Lasers use a specific wavelength of light, but IPL devices employ broadband light to treat a variety of skin conditions and abnormalities, including photoaging, age spots, freckles, pigment and broken capillaries, as well as unwanted hair and tattoos. They’re also sometimes used to treat fine lines and varicose veins. The treatments require no downtime and are much less expensive than laser treatments. WHAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU? When you look in the mirror, what bothers you? Muccini says people often come into his office and ask what he thinks they need done. “Nobody ‘needs’ this. We do it because we want to look like the most fabulous version of ourselves,” he says. He advises patients to prioritize their desires and consider the cost, downtime and what they can tolerate.

[ Trend report DRY SHAMPOO by dorothy weiner | photo by bill barrett

Hairdressers often say that washing your hair every day

will dry it out. But we all know what happens when you don’t wash your hair: Things can quickly go south, right into a bad hair day. But there is a happy compromise—dry shampoo. It’s not exactly a new concept, but today’s products are much improved and can leave your hair looking better than it does on the days you do shampoo! They offer something called ‘texturizing,’ which adds body and the right amount of hold. See what the T&S editorial staff thinks about the products it tested.

Vaughn Barber’s Powder

If you want to go old school, you can use baby powder to absorb excess oil on the scalp and hair. This classic talc offers “a smooth, silky, powdery feel,” and it has impressive ingredients: rice bran oil, arrowroot powder and meadow foam seed oil. The scent, American Riviera, is a little masculine, however. —Dorothy Weiner, Editor in Chief online at V76.com, $25

»

Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray

This is meant to be an alternative to dry shampoo, and it lives up to its promise of building volume and adding texture. Supposedly, it’s the ‘patented polymers’ that absorb oil at the roots and add pouf to otherwise limp-looking hair. Whatever we have to thank for the result, it does deliver with classic Oribe ‘wow.’ Using it might take some getting used to, as it comes out like a blow torch, making it tricky to control flow and coverage. —Dorothy Weiner, Editor in Chief Neiman Marcus, $42

Sephora Express Dry Shampoo

I don’t care what anybody says, if you have oily hair—and mine is still as oily as a teenager’s—dry shampoo is not the best option. It’s getting enthusiastic online reviews, but it didn’t work for me. Maybe I didn’t use it the right way—there aren’t any instructions on the can! But after spraying it on my roots and brushing it out, my hair looked as limp and lank as ever. It smells nice, though, like apples. —Tony Di Martino, Senior Editor Sephora, $9

R+Co Death Valley Dry Shampoo

Don’t let the name scare you—this dry shampoo takes inspiration from the desert in the best way. With just a few spritzes, it absorbs excess oil and delivers hair that’s big, beautiful and wildly textured. Scented with one of R+Co’s signature scents—a combination of bergamot, wild fig, cedarwood and tonka bean—it smells great, too. —Stephanie Zeilenga, Managing Editor online at RandCo.com and select salons, $29

SHOW Premiere Dry Shampoo

If you want noticeable texture and a little volume without any hassle, this shampoo is for you. The blend of natural powders and extracts removes excess oil from hair while also conditioning, so you can still have luscious locks between washes. Just be careful—the spray comes out with force! homework] Dear Homework,

I have lived in this house for 29 years and feel it is now time for some changes. Sincerely,

In Need of a Face-lift

Dear In Need of a Face-lift,

before

When I sat down to address your issue, frankly, I was stumped. While removing the overgrown yew hedge and upgrading the modestly detailed front porch are obvious starting points, these corrective measures will not yield much of a face-lift. To make a dramatic change, we need to address weaknesses in the existing façade. After Currently, the entry/front door area is very weak. The door is almost invisible, tucked away in its corner. This should be the most prominent feature of the façade—not the weakest. Additionally, as with many ranch homes, there really is not a composition here, merely a juxtaposition of too-similar pieces. I have chosen to consider these issues as well. Hopefully the first thing you notice about the revised design is the new turret at the front door. Adjacent to it is a second level, added above the living room, which could be used to create a ‘volume ceiling’ in the living room. These taller elements now give the façade a composition by providing a dominant portion that is architecturally more important than the adjacent areas. Additional architectural features, such as a garden wall with an arched, gated opening, French doors at the dining room, and a new gable and box bay window at the bedroom wing, add supporting architectural details that further transform the home’s suburban ranch house look. A new, more distinctive roof and paint scheme complete the architectural initiatives. The landscape also has received many revisions, including a new, exposed aggregate circle drive, removal of a large deciduous tree and the creation of some new earth berms at the curb, to give a more interesting and romantic feel to the property. In the end, I admit this all adds up to more of a transplant than a face-lift, but the house is now a charming and unique residence that is ready for its ‘glamour shot.’ Thanks for asking,

Spring Decorating

Daffodils are a great cut flower for decorating. They lend a festive, yet casual feel to a spring tablescape. One of my favorite ways to set the mood of a luncheon is to place posies of daffodils in simple vases along the length of the table. Keep the stems short so guests can easily see each other across the table. Another great way to bring the outdoors inside is to create a chandelier of daffodils. I use a moss-lined hanging basket and fill it with small jars of cut stems from the field. I then round out the chandelier with grapevine and other natural materials. The sap from daffodils has the reputation of being a flower killer, but with proper care they can be used in a mixed arrangement. Arrange flowers, leaving out the daffodils. Soak cut daffodil stems in a mixture of water and floral food for about six hours. Remove the stems from the solution and add to the other flowers.

the

Providing Luxurious Floors... for over One Hundred Years.

It’s no secret I have an affinity for daffodils. Even their trumpet shape seems to announce the arrival of spring. In fact, we have more than 300,000 of these beautiful bulbs planted at Moss Mountain Farm for a sea of color that ranges from cream to deep, bright, sunshine yellow. Care After Blooming

As the weather warms and spring starts to give way to summer, you’ll want to take care of your daffodils so they’ll make a healthy return next year. Be sure to deadhead as the flowers start to fade. Leave the remaining foliage for a minimum of six weeks and apply a low-nitrogen, high-potash fertilizer so the bulbs can be recharged to bloom again the following year. Daffodils will produce more bulbs over time. Lift and divide when clumps become large, and the flowering grows sparse. The best time to divide and move bulbs is when foliage has withered. Lift bulbs with a digging fork or spade, then replant immediately at the same depth, and water thoroughly. P. Allen Smith, host of two public television programs, is an award-winning designer and gardening expert. He is the author of several books, including his Seasonal Recipes from the Garden.

Lizzy Dooley has been a people person from the get-go. “I grew up with five brothers and sisters, and I love being from a big family,” says the Clayton native. After college, she taught second and third grade in the Maplewood Richmond Heights School District. “I enjoyed it, but I knew real estate was the right career for me as soon as I passed the test. I thrive on meeting new people and discovering properties.” She joined Laura McCarthy in 2007, and partnered with Michelle Moshiri two years ago. GOOD SPORT Growing up, I could always be found on the hockey or soccer field, or shooting baskets. I still coach my kids’ teams when my schedule allows. BATTLE SCARS I got my license right as the bubble burst, so I learned how to run with the market when it was really tough. FIRST SALE It was a darling little home in Brentwood. We sold it after the market fell in 2007—no easy task. My clients were so happy, and it was such a rush to close my first deal. I still drive by it and smile! FAVORITE THING People always apologize for the way their place looks, but believe me, I’ve seen it all. I enjoy working with my clients to get the place ready to sell. ART OF THE DEAL I love negotiating! I’m not afraid to get creative, and I never let a deal die. NOT A HOBBY Real estate is a full-time job. Michelle and I work seven days a week, often late into the evening. We help our clients determine the right price, get the house ready to show, schedule the opening so it hits the market at the right time, and aggressively advertise in multiple venues. FAMILY GUY I’m extremely lucky to have a supportive husband who’s an incredible dad. He runs the show when I work weekends. SECRET SAUCE Michelle and I really listen to our clients, and we’re always tapping into our network, which includes off-market properties, to find the right place or the right buyer. NO SALE? The main reason a house doesn’t sell is price, plain and simple. Hiring an experienced agent who knows the area and knows how to price pays off. If the price is wrong, the home will sit. ALL THUMBS I wish I could sew, but I can’t even sew on a button. PHILOSOPHY This is a great business, but it’s tough. It keeps you young and humble!

families have their own special neighborhood gem: Shaw Park, located near the heart of the city’s business district. Founded in 1935, the nearly 48-acre park is Clayton’s oldest and largest. From towering trees that provide lovely shaded picnic areas to playgrounds, pools and athletic courts, there’s something for everyone in the family. The park continues to be celebrated for a wide variety of youth programs, including hockey in winter and camps in summer. A new Tree Top Playground is universally accessible and includes a sensory garden, playground instruments and a splash pad. Long before the land was transformed into a perennially popular playground for locals, it was owned by Charles Gratoit, brother-in-law of Auguste Chouteau, the founder of St. Louis. In 1820, the land was sold to Ralph Clayton (yes, that Clayton), who lived there until 1892. The park was built in the 1930s with the help of federal funds, and officially dedicated in May 1937. The town made an event out of it, with a water carnival and school bands playing patriotic tunes. It was founded by and named for Charles A. Shaw, who served as Clayton mayor from 1933 to 1940. During his tenure, he helped pull the city out of the Great Depression by initiating Works Progress Administration projects that not only beautified the city, but also provided a library and the park that bears his name.

It’s no exaggeration to say that generations of Claytonians have found respite from the summer heat at Shaw Park—since the park’s opening, its aquatic center has included an outdoor pool and a competitive swimming team, the Clayton Shaw Park Tideriders. Once the largest swimming pool complex in the Midwest, today the center includes an outdoor Olympicregulation dive tower, a rarity today, as well as a 50-meter competition pool and zero-depth children’s pool. Residents can partake in recreational, lap or competitive swimming, as well as a wide variety of classes and special pool events throughout the summer. Since its opening, many improvements have been made to the park. The 1960s saw the creation of the Clayton Ice Rink and the Clayton Amateur Ice Hockey Association, as well as improvements and additions to the aquatic center. Recent additions to the park include more than a mile of walking paths, an adult fitness area and The Moneta Garden, a large native plant area that features multiple works of art by celebrated local artist Ernest Trova. Additional public art dots other areas of the park, and the recently built Enterprise Holdings Pavilion offers a large covered area ideal for special events or picnicking.
