FASHION FORWARD WEST COUNTY CENTER
by stephanie wallace WE ALL KNOW THAT IT’S IMPORTANT TO SUPPORT INDUSTRY IN
St. Louis. West County Center in Des Peres is taking that mission to heart by establishing a new partnership with STL Fashion Alliance. The newly founded nonprofit is dedicated to providing resources to aspiring, emerging and established local fashion professionals, ranging from designers to models and photographers. The organization is opening a satellite location in the shopping center with the goal of serving more professionals and teaching the public about the St. Louis fashion industry. STL Fashion Alliance was founded by Audra Harrold and Kristin Phommaly. Their mission was to create a resource to help drive the development of the local fashion industry. “There are a lot of great organizations doing their part for St. Louis fashion,” Harrold says. “If you look at the industry as a pie, everyone has their own unique slice, and it’s really important that we collaborate to move fashion forward as a collective. Our focus is helping people connect with resources, whether they are new to the industry or more established.” The nonprofit’s West County Center location will not be a retail store. Instead, it will serve as an innovation and information hub. “The space will be open to the public so they can come and see what is happening in St. Louis fashion,” Harrold explains. “Designers will be able to share their work on mannequins and through sketches, and people will be able to offer real time feedback on the current displays. We’re really excited to be able to bridge the gap between the public and local talent.” The location also will serve as an event and meeting space, providing designers a professional place to meet with clients that has fitting rooms and tailoring facilities.

The STL Fashion Alliance’s satellite will host its first event April 1. It will be one of the nonprofit’s Fashion Fridays, which are free networking opportunities for professionals to meet and interact with one another. Some events held at the space will be open to the public, while others will be for the organization’s clients only. Harrold says how the location is utilized will evolve. “Everything is unfolding as we become aware of what people need,” she notes. “Our goal is to create awareness in the public. It goes beyond just shopping locally to making a tangible connection to the local professionals you’re supporting.” For West County Center, a partnership with an organization like STL Fashion Alliance just made sense. “For a style destination like us, this is a great opportunity to be able to support local designers, students and other facets of the St. Louis fashion community,” senior marketing director Sean Phillips says. “Through the satellite location, STL Fashion Alliance will be able to continue to grow while reaching more people in the county, and West County Center will be able to be a part of supporting its mission to bring St. Louis back to prominence in the national and global fashion industry.” &

WARNING: THIS COLUMN IS NOT FUNNY.
Talking about it helps! I know since I have OCD and regularly talk to a therapist and see a doctor for medication. I’ve always been very open about my mental health. I am never embarrassed, just like I wouldn’t be embarrassed if I had diabetes. It is just who I am. So, what can you do to help if someone you know is struggling with depression? Friends: Please call, even if you get no response. The cloud of sadness I feel is often lifted when I have a funny conversation with someone I love. No, I don’t want to talk about myself. I want to hear about you and the things you are doing. It doesn’t make me sad. It makes me hopeful. But please know if I cancel plans at the last minute, it is me, not you. Just remember most people really “do want to get over it,” and saying things like “other people have it worse” and “getting out and taking a walk would help” aren’t helpful to a person who is depressed. Listening and talking, that’s helpful! Family: There are days when getting out of your PJs can be too much, but what a difference
It is truthful, but it won’t make you laugh. I want to talk about depression. Why? Because these past few years have been tough. They have been tough on you, your kids and, honestly, me. So, let’s do a little bit of sharing on a topic that’s not so funny. The easy thing to do would be to write a column about funny words I’ve discovered or Google “humorous speech topic.” I could easily crank out 600 words and be done, but that feels fake and not very honest to a group of people I’ve come to think of as friends. This funny girl hasn’t been feeling all that funny lately. There is no reason to list my tale of woes because if you are a regular reader, you know them: the death of my brother, COVID and a bunch of other things that seemed to hit all at once. I sometimes look up at the sky and wonder who I’ve pissed off. But then I realize what I am going through is part of life. Why talk about it? Since the start of the pandemic there has been a spike in depression.

it makes. Clothing and a made bed feels like such an accomplishment. Next thing you know, you are ready to tackle one more task and one more after that. Encouragement without judgment is hard, I know, but if you can do it, it does make a difference. And remember, the depressed person knows their depression hurts the entire family and already feels pretty darn guilty about it. Professional help sometimes seems like admitting failure. I am used to therapy because of my OCD. Therapy is the place you get to say anything. I can’t describe how freeing it is to connect with the right therapist. It took me a while to find her, so don’t give up. Depression is not your fault. It’s just your brain’s chemical balance out of whack. I am not a medical professional—though I often act like one—but I do have the good sense to tell you that if you are depressed, talk to your doctor. They will help, but if they don’t, let me know. I’ll yell at them for you. Funny comes next issue. Peace my Peeps!

anything seen in previous years. “The demand for homes was already high, but COVID-19, politics and inflation have only exacerbated the situation,” says Amanda Alejandro-Steinback, president of The Realty Shop, a division of Vue Enterprises. “It’s now more important than ever that you work with a real estate advocate who knows the market.” With more than 15 years of residential real estate experience, she brings her expertise to the Creve Coeur-based brokerage, which helps clients navigate every step of the home buying and selling process. According to Alejandro-Steinback, it’s important that both buyers and sellers understand their own limited grasp of the market. “The best advice I can give is to understand that you don’t know what you don’t know,” she notes. “It’s important to start talking to an expert early and often. Whether your timeline is 90 days or five years, you should start interviewing agents well in advance, so you can find a trusted resource with the knowledge necessary for success. It’s a crazy time, especially for luxury properties, but if you approach it the right way, you can use this market to your advantage.” The Realty Shop is one the fastest growing brokerages in St. Louis. Locally owned and operated, it also has a strong understanding of the community and the St. Louis market. “We aren’t part of a national franchise that is disconnected from the local market,” Alejandro-Steinback says. “We can act as an advocate and resource for clients because we have our own market share.” That type of knowledge is especially important when inventory is low, as it is now. The Realty Shop knows which listings will be available before they officially are on the market, giving buyers an advantage over the competition For the brokerage and its knowledgeable team members, the focus is on innovating and redefining the current real estate landscape to make it more person-focused. It is dedicated to meeting clients’ needs using both a personal touch and the latest cutting-edge technology. “Our technology is robust, so we can better serve both clients and our agents,” Alejandro-Steinback notes. “When you work with The Realty Shop, you communicate with one person throughout every step of your sale. We even go as far as setting up utilities and movers for you. The only thing you have to worry about is arriving at your new home.” While The Realty Shop is a boutique brokerage, Alejandro-Steinback notes the term doesn’t mean the firm should be perceived as small or limited. She and her husband, Jay Steinback, founded Vue Enterprises in 2018 to offer a one-stop shop for both buyers and sellers to access all necessary services without having to visit multiple providers. “We offer a full range of real estate-related services including title, mortgage and insurance,” she says. “There are so many ways to buy or sell a house today, and oftentimes, it can be difficult to know MA JO R PL AY ER S what is the best approach. We streamline the process, offering pricing transparency and eliminating confusion.” & SPEC IAL SECT ION

lambert airport
People take flight at St. Louis-Lambert International Airport, but usually not inside the complex. That is, until 1 p.m. this Saturday, March 26, when young aerialists, acrobats and other gifted performers of the StL’s own Circus Harmony put on a show in the main terminal. It’s a celebration to focus on a lavish photo exhibit—Watch Out for Flying Children—that was installed in Lambert Gallery and will remain for travelers to enjoy through Sept. 15. The performance will be followed by a reception in the gallery at 2 p.m. Although the event is free, there is a charge for airport parking. The astonishing photos show performers defying gravity on the streets and sidewalks of the Lou, the boardwalk of Tel Aviv, the countryside of Puerto Rico and other international locations. You’d never know where these flying children may land to share the joy, amazement and triumph of the circus. Alumni are performing with Cirque du

Hope springs eternal. And since it’s officially spring, why shouldn’t it? Events that were canceled because of COVID-19 last year and in 2020 are returning. The second year of Music at the Intersection in the Grand Center Arts District, coming up Sept. 10 and 11, will headline none other than neo-soul siren Erykah Badu, blues-rock guitar wizard Gary Clark Jr. and soulful jazz pianist Robert Glasper. Tickets will cover all acts slated to appear, one or both days of the festival. Local faves, from Urge to Ptah Williams, are on the bill. It’s an embarrassment of riches, and full details are available at musicattheintersection.org. I mean, we didn’t even mention that legendary bluesman Buddy Guy is on the schedule! But that’s six months from now, and if your concert ears get real itchy between now and then, just check calendars for the Pageant, Delmar Hall, Blueberry Hill, the Sheldon and The Fabulous Fox (for starters). Many of the artists you missed because they had to cancel or postpone are returning. Oh, and I hear they play music in Downtown West, Chesterfield and Maryland Heights, too. But don’t be a knucklehead: Make sure to have a mask and proof of vaccination with you.
the metro
Girl Scout cookies are a seasonal delicacy not unlike fruitcake in December or hollow chocolate bunnies in the spring. (Marshmallow Peeps? Who eats that treacly mess, and why?) I say this with some embarrassment because I already consumed, all by myself, five of the seven boxes we ordered from Katie, a Girl Scout and the energetic daughter of Julie Streiler, our lovely and talented design director at T&S. The new Adventurefuls were a brownie-flavored round chunk of chocolate with a hint of sea salt. They were very pretty, and pretty darn good. I left the two boxes of Thin Mints for Andrea, our letter carrier, who sends them to the troops every year. Alas … the rest are all gone. But a sugar jones still surges through my entire being. My mouth waters as I type this: I put the Tagalongs, the chocolate peanut butter cookies, in the freezer. Samoas are better simply refrigerated so you don’t smear chocolate, caramel and coconut all over yourself. Lemon-Ups, a shortbread with a lemony glaze, make you feel better about being a glutton because empowering messages are imprinted on them, like “I Am a Leader’’ or “I’m a Go-Getter”—nothing like “Let’s Share” or “Count Your Calories.” Upon inspecting the packaging, I was taken aback by this phrase: “Naturally Flavored with Other Natural Flavors.” Huh? I’d have contacted someone from the bakery’s Department of Redundancy Department, but I’m fresh out of cookies. Yes, girlscouts.org uses cookies on their website, but they’re not the edible kind. Anyhow, you can’t buy the real thing online—you must contact a Girl Scout like Katie.
the galleria
Here’s more on the continuing saga of that big white tent in the southeast corner of Macy’s parking lot at the Galleria. As of March 30, the unique and alluring ‘immersive’ Van Gogh exhibit is to be Van Going … Van Going … Van Gone. I mean, it will be the artist’s 169th birthday. He’s probably over all this fuss by now. Anyhow, if your name is Vincent—or March 30 is your birthday—you’ll get in for free that day. But the tent is to remain. No, it won’t become a wedding reception destination, and it’s not just a tent. Drum roll, please: ‘The Immersive Artspace’ is to be the site of another wildly creative multimedia approach to the oeuvre of an Impressionist artist. Next up— Claude Monet, he of the gorgeous water lilies. As far as we know, when he went to his reward, both of his ears were still attached. But, at this writing, we don’t know how long the segue between productions will take, or when Beyond Monet: The Immersive Experience will open. In the meantime, tickets may be reserved at monetstlouis.com.

WHO WAS JULIETTE GORDON LOW, AND WHERE DID SHE LIVE?
LAST ISSUE’S Q&A What do Led Zeppelin, The Who, Rush, The Rolling Stones—and Spinal Tap—have in common? Led Zeppelin, the Who, Rush, the Rolling Stones—and Spinal Tap—all lost their original drummers. John Bonham and Keith Moon, respectively drummers for ‘Led Zep’ and the Who, were both claimed by alcoholism at the age of 32. Moon died in 1978, Bonham in 1980. (In a blackly humorous ‘tribute,’ drummers for the make-believe heavy-metal band Spinal Tap kept meeting their demise by various horrible means, from ‘a bizarre gardening accident’ to bursting into flame onstage.) Neil Peart of Rush died in 2020 of brain cancer at 67, and the Stones’ Charlie Watts, 80, died in August 2021 of lung cancer.
TOWN TALK
downtown Gateway Outdoor Expo (GOE) had humble beginnings, in a bike swap a dozen or so years ago. This one had a garage-sale atmosphere, where participants would lay out blankets with bicycle accessories and parts for each other to check out. It’s free to attend the expo, held April 1 and 2. The expo stretches out into 50,000 square feet of America’s Center—our woefully underutilized convention complex in downtown St. Louis. Brad Kovach—an inveterate mountain biker who admits to a touch of reckless racing through the woods, mud splattering, teeth chattering as he bounces over rocky terrain—has nurtured the concept. Speaking of rocky terrain, anyone who’s brave enough to kick off a print publication in an increasingly uncertain media environment must be an adrenaline junkie. Indeed. Kovach grew up canoeing and working at a Wisconsin summer camp. A 1995 journalism grad of Indiana University, he’s editor and publisher of Terrain, which one can pick up in more than 200 locations in the region, from sporting-goods stores and bike shops to the Alpine Shop in Kirkwood. (BTW, because inquiring StL minds must know, Kovach is a South County boy, graduating from Lindbergh High School in 1995.) So, what do a kayak or canoe paddler, cross-country skier and mountain biker have in common? Plenty. But they all have a tendency to operate in their own worlds, says Kovach, adding two keywords that describe outdoorsmen and -women throughout the metro: “Super passionate!” These discrete groups can and will communicate. “We’re growing the
community by connecting the dots.” Two dots will be connected in 10 days: GO! St. Louis runners will pick up race packets at America’s Center, where more than 200 GOE exhibitors will be set up. That’s around 10,000 outdoors enthusiasts; a captive audience, if you will. But no one should be too wiped out: The 26.2-mile run is Sunday, April 3, after GOE has wrapped up. Plenty of ‘down’ time beforehand to check out such features as a climbing wall, brand-spanking-new equipment and vehicles, and to watch product and activity demos. The shorter, family-focused events are on Saturday, April 2. (And the day before, April Fools Day, is a Friday, so you’ll be ‘working from home,’ of course. Right?) Kovach also wanted to be in the convention complex because underserved neighborhoods are right at the doorstep: “These kids don’t know they can boat the Mississippi, even though they may see it from their bedroom window.” Efforts to get people outdoors have transformed neighborhoods elsewhere, he said, using Indianapolis as an example. It can here, too. The tireless efforts of Great Rivers Greenway are seeing to that. GOE is a focal point for the sedentary among us still groggy from hibernation, the pandemic, or both. “This is a kickoff, to get everyone excited,” says Kovach, who counts himself fortunate to have a career that fits hand in glove with what he’s always eager to do in his spare time. Visit gatewayoutdoorexpo.com. At terrain-mag.com, you can read Kovach’s thoughtful article, “Driving Diversity and Equity in the St. Louis Outdoors.”

DOT THEORY I BET MOST OF YOU completed those numbered dot
drawings as kids. The ones where you’d look at a page full of dots and have no idea what the final picture would become. So, you’d start connecting the dots, one, two, three, four and so on. After a while, an image would start to emerge from the dots, and by the last point, you could clearly see the picture. It didn’t matter that you had no clue at the start about what the final depiction would be. If you persisted in connecting dots, an image would evolve. I use these drawings as a metaphor for life and finding your direction and purpose. Dots are any experiences that cross your path that you seem drawn to because it seems like it would be fun, because your gut is telling you to or because it just feels like the right thing to do at the time. Dots can look like a lot of things: a class, a job, volunteer work, traveling, reading a biography, joining a club or group, trying a new activity or having a cup of coffee with someone you find interesting. You trust your gut, experience the dot, and over the months and years, the dots start to connect and the picture of your life slowly emerges. With each dot you learn a new skill, learn about your interests, strengths, aptitude and passions. This growing self-knowledge builds your identity capitol and leads you to your purpose. Learning things is often less important than learning about yourself. I tell young people that they don’t need to be so stressed out about knowing what college they will attend, their major or their career path. I encourage them to interview every adult they bump into and ask them if they knew when they were young adults what they are presently doing for their career. Most grownups had no clue and zig-zagged their way to their calling. Interestingly, you don’t need to connect the dots, they do that on their own without us having to force it. I want us all to value detours, breadth of experience, experimentation, sampling and our intuition. That is how your life path can emerge as well. Set an intention this year to be open to dot experiences and to trust the urges that call to you. In this way, the picture of your life will slowly but surely evolve, one seemingly unconnected experience at a time. Yield to the current of life, unencumbered by cultural conditioning, external pressures and popular opinion. & TIM JORDAN, M.D., IS A BEHAVIORAL PEDIATRICIAN WHO WORKS WITH GIRLS IN GRADE SCHOOL THROUGH COLLEGE. BETTER LIVING THE GATESWORTH

COVER STORY
AS WE AGE, SECURITY AND COMFORT become even more important than they
were earlier in life. It’s much easier to enjoy your later years when you know all your needs are anticipated and help is never more than a few steps away. Elfriede Olney, who lives at The Gatesworth in University City, says the combination of ease and confidence is one of the main reasons she decided to move to the residence about four years ago. Olney, a native of Linz, Austria, says her experience as a resident has been wonderful from day one. She previously owned a home with her husband, Dr. John Olney, and the two had been planning a move to The Gatesworth when he became ill and passed away. It was a bit daunting to pare down her possessions and relocate, but Olney says The Gatesworth staff were there to help her manage the process from the start. “They were wonderful,” she says. “They helped me move and got me set up in my new apartment. The staff thought of things I couldn’t have anticipated, and they made a difficult situation much more comfortable. And they are always available whenever I require something. No need is too large or small for them to help with.” Olney says making friends and settling into the community came naturally because she was so thoroughly welcomed. “Socialization is a big part of living here, but you can do as much or as little of it as you like,” she explains. “The staff understands that everyone has different needs and preferences.” Another attractive aspect of life at The Gatesworth is how easy it is to stay active. “I was a gymnast and had a career as an occupational therapist, so I know the importance of regular physical activity,” she says. “Physical and mental health go hand in hand. Maintaining movement, strength and balance are so important as you get older.” She exercises five times a week and takes part in group classes that make it easy to stay motivated. “I also enjoy playing ping-pong and going for walks through the beautifully landscaped grounds,” she says. “Whenever friends come to visit, they are amazed at how lovely it is here.”
THE GATESWORTH’S BEAUTIFUL GROUNDS MAKE IT EASY TO STAY ACTIVE.
There are plenty of other stimulating pastimes to keep residents engaged as well, Olney says. “I love the cultural activities and lectures on current events, music, art, science and politics,” she notes. “We enjoy presentations from very learned, interesting people from local universities, and they are always very popular.” Dining is its own form of entertainment as well. “I’m very impressed with the cuisine here,” Olney says. “Our chef covers all of the food groups and pays close attention to good nutrition for the residents. Meals are always a pleasure, whether I eat in my apartment or join others in the dining room.” Daily personal attention rounds out her list of reasons to enjoy life at The Gatesworth. “I think what makes it so special is that the owners SE NI OR LIV IN G are here and accessible,” Olney says. “The staff is really caring, and they notice your needs. Their kindness is what makes this community so homelike for me.” & SPEC IAL SECT ION

REPRODUCTIVE HOPE
Urology of St. Louis (USL) has created a new way for people suffering from urinary tract infections to immediately access care. A new virtual clinic will allow for same-day and next-day virtual appointments, diagnostics and treatment. Patients will be able to consult with a nurse over the phone, drop off a urine sample to be reviewed and set up a virtual consultation with a doctor to review the results. “UTIs are a condition that can be easily diagnosed and treated but can also lead to other much more serious complications such as kidney infections or even sepsis if ignored,” Dr. David Bryan says. “We created this innovative diagnosis testing process to provide patients with a convenient way to access the specialized care our team of urologists provides, without any major disruptions to their day.”
Thanks to a grant from the JC Memorial Foundation, the Mercy Cardinals Young Adult Cancer Program is helping patients with fertility preservation. The program works with patients ranging in age from 15 to 30 and is the only one of its kind in the St. Louis region. A dedicated nurse navigator will provide support to ensure fertility considerations are addressed at the earliest stages of treatment. “Addressing future fertility before treatment begins is my top priority,” nurse navigator Gina Sundmacher says. “Even for teens who are nowhere near considering a family, it’s important they know the potential risks of various treatment options to their fertility and what they can do about it proactively. Patients are living longer after treatment, and we want them to have the best quality of life possible after they beat cancer.”
KIDNEY HEALTH
Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine have determined that people who had COVID-19 are at increased risk of cardiovascular complications like blood clots, stroke, heart attack and disruptive heart rhythms up to a year after infection. The study analyzed medical records of 153,760 people who had tested positive for COVID-19 sometime between March 1, 2020, and Jan. 15, 2021. “We wanted to build upon our past research on COVID’s long-term effects by taking a closer look at what’s happening in people’s hearts,” says senior author Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly, an assistant professor of medicine. “What we’re seeing isn’t good. COVID-19 can lead to serious cardiovascular complications and death. The heart does not regenerate or easily mend after damage. These are diseases that will affect people for a lifetime.”

COVID-19 AND HEART HEALTH African Americans have an increased risk of kidney failure, and that risk is related to variations in a gene called apolipoprotein L1 (APOL1). This high-risk genotype is present in approximately 15% of African Americans. Researchers at Saint Louis University are part of a network working to address racial disparities in kidney transplant outcomes. The clinical study, “APOL1 Long-term Kidney Transplantation Outcomes Network (APOLLO),” is a national study coordinated by 13 lead centers, including SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital. APOLLO seeks to quantify how much of the higher risk of transplant failure currently assigned to African Americans is due to kidney risk variants in the donor.

Turner was born on Jan. 24, 1914, in Mount Morris, Illinois, and grew up in Webster Groves. She attended Beloit College in Wisconsin, where she received a bachelors in English and was part of the Kappa Delta sorority—she received more than 100 birthday cards from sorority sisters. She earned a masters from Northwestern University and worked as a teacher in the Special School District. Turner lived at home until she was 104 and enjoys spending time outside, listening to music, watching the news and reading. She also is part of Parc Provence’s book, bridge and gardening clubs.

The senior living community is using technology to keep resident and at-home care patients active and independent longer. It introduced Alexa-based SmartCompanion, a virtual assistant that’s directly integrated in Friendship Village’s communication systems. The system offers seniors hands-free access to phone and video calling, 24/7 emergency response, daily reminders, entertainment and more. The technology can be personalized to meet an individual’s needs, including engaging seniors with visual impairments or reduced mobility. Technology like this is crucial in the aftermath of the pandemic. AARP reports that there has been a 26% uptick in early deaths related to social isolation, and smart speakers have been found to help seniors with memory, mobility and more.

Eat Better, Age Better BY S T E P H A N I E WA L L AC E Along with staying active, proper nutrition can support healthy aging. Here are some tips for what to put on your plate to ensure you can make the most of your golden years. Jacque Phillips RN, BSN, President/Founder
balance your plate
Eating a variety of foods from each food group can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. To get more fruits and veggies in your meals and snacks, you can opt for frozen, canned or ready-to-eat varieties if slicing and chopping fresh ones is a challenge. Make sure you are avoiding foods that are high in added sugar, saturated fats and sodium.
maintain muscle mass
Make sure you get enough protein throughout the day. Adding seafood, dairy or fortified soy alternatives along with beans, peas and lentils to your meals can help you maintain muscle mass.
focus on nutrients
Make sure you choose foods that include the nutrients you need, such as potassium, calcium, dietary fiber and vitamins B12 and D. B12 can be especially important because our ability to absorb it decreases with age, and the use of certain medication can decrease it further. Protein and fortified foods can help you get the recommended amount. If you are considering taking dietary supplements, it’s important to discuss them with your health care provider.
drink plenty of liquids
As we age, we can lose some of our sense of thirst. It’s important that we continue to regularly drink water throughout the day. To avoid dehydration, low- or fat-free milk, fortified soy beverages and 100% juice also are options. Beverages with lots of added sugars or salt should be avoided.
think about your teeth
Our teeth and gums change with age, and we may not be able to chew everything we could when we were younger. People with dental problems sometimes find foods like fruits, vegetables or meats difficult to manage, but it’s important not to miss out on the nutrients they provide. Look for softer alternatives like steamed veggies, canned unsweetened fruit, low-sodium soups or canned tuna.
practice safe preparation
If you are 65 or older, you’re at higher risk for serious complications, including hospitalization and death, from foodborne illnesses. This is for a variety of reasons, including food being held longer in the gastrointestinal tract, allowing bacteria to grow; the liver and kidneys not properly ridding the body of bacteria and toxins; the stomach not producing enough acid; and underlying chronic conditions like cancer and diabetes. Make sure food is properly refrigerated; separate items like raw meat, poultry and seafood so they don’t spread bacteria; make sure food is always cooked to the correct internal temperature; and always wash your hands.
eat socially
Meals are more enjoyable when shared with others, so make eating a social event. Invite a friend to join you for a meal at least twice a week, or check with community centers or places of worship for opportunities to eat with others. If you’re in a senior living community, enjoy lunch and dinner with your neighbors in communal dining spaces.

A TIME TO CELEBRATE WEST COUNTY CENTER
by stephanie wallace WHEN IT COMES TO CELEBRATION, there’s nothing quite like a birthday, and West County Center in Des Peres is having a big one in 2022. While the shopping center first opened in 1969, it underwent a major expansion in 2002, bringing a revitalized retail experience to St. Louis. Now, it is marking two decades of serving the community in its new and improved capacity. To celebrate, West County Center is offering 20 giveaways throughout the year. One of the largest is planned for April 9 at Evereve, a women’s styling boutique. The shopping center is partnering with The Fabulous Fox Theatre to give the first 20 people who visit the store two tickets to Disney’s The Lion King, which will be playing at the theater June 1 through 19. The next 20 visitors will receive a $20 Evereve gift card, Lion King soundtrack and the Something to Celebrate box, a special offering put together by the Hallmark Channel. According to manager Jordan Tieber, Evereve is excited for the opportunity to participate in the giveaway. That day the store also will be hosting a style social. “Guests will not only get the chance to win Lion King tickets,” she says. “Everyone will have the opportunity to participate in our styling experience, there will be refreshments, and a 15% discount will be offered.” While Evereve has been a part of West County Center for five years, she hopes the event will offer more people a chance to discover it. With the store’s focus on personalized styling, the April 9 event is the perfect time for people to explore this spring’s new trends. Tieber notes that there are several trends the store’s trained stylists are excited about. “Straight-legged denim is huge

this season, and matching sets are going to be another big trend,” she says. “For spring and summer, Evereve also is a huge dress destination. We have you covered for all of your events. When you visit the store, you can expect to be styled from head to toe.” For West County Center, the Lion King giveaway is one of many ways to celebrate with the community. “For our anniversary, we want to thank everyone for their continued support for the center,” senior marketing director Sean Phillips says. “People can follow us on social media or visit our website to learn more about future giveaways we’ll be hosting this year. For example, just a couple upcoming ones include tickets to The Muny and concerts like Train and New Kids on the Block.” The shopping center also is continuing the Birthday Buddies program, which it launched to commemorate Missouri’s bicentennial last year. The initiative benefits the Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition, and shoppers can donate gift cards from West County Center stores to children who could use a birthday surprise. “The program has been successful beyond our expectations,” Phillips says. “So far, we have received more than 350 gift cards, totaling more than $11,000. We’re so thankful for people’s generosity and hope the program continues to thrive as part of our birthday celebration.” &

OFF the cuff w/claiborne monica adams
For KSDK ’s Monica Adams, the fun begins early. As par t of “ Today in St . Louis,” her day begins well before your alarm goes off or the red camera light goes on, and she wouldn’ t have it any other way. Her career as a seasoned veteran in T V and radio is just the tip of the iceberg—she doesn’ t waste a minute when it comes to pursuing multiple ventures and having a good time. YOU HAVE DONE SO MANY THINGS IN MEDIA . WHERE DID IT ALL START ? In 1993 , I had an internship in spor ts for channel 3 . I left there and ended up going into radio in Festus. I was there for two and a half years, and it ’s really where I got my feet wet . From there, I went to a solo countr y music show in De Soto, Missouri, and then moved to WIL where I did news and spor ts. YOU’ VE COVERED JUST ABOUT EVERY TOPIC. WHAT HAVE YOU ENJOYED THE MOST ? I think more of the enter tainment aspect . I loved doing morning radio at WIL . The team we had there just had natural chemistr y, and I really enjoyed having the oppor tunit y to inter view so many different people like athletes, musicians and actors. I’ ve always been drawn to the ar ts, so for me, there was just a natural connection. Now, I’m doing press junkets, so I’ ve star ted that again. WHAT MAKES YOUR CURRENT CREW SO MUCH FUN TO WORK WITH? I came to KSDK from a competing station and had never met most of the crew in person. Normally, when you put people who never really knew each other together, you have to find your way to some sor t of chemistr y. From the moment I walked in the door, it was like I had known these people my entire career. I love what we all bring as a team, but also as individuals. YOUR L ATEST VENTURE IS WORKING WITH THE FOLK S AT BESPOKE . When I was growing up, my mom was a seamstress, so I’ ve always been around fashion. For as long as I’ ve been on T V, the No. 1 question my family and friends and I get asked is “ Where does Monica shop?” Beyond dressing well myself, I’ ve always loved helping others find their true potential, especially men. I’ ve always helped out the guys I’ ve dated, my cousins and my friends’ husbands and boy friends. I have too much creativit y for what ’s on the rack , so designing custom clothing is what I love. WHAT ’S ONE ST YLE TREND YOU’D LIKE TO BRING BACK ? I love to be dressed up, even beyond what we wear on the air. I toe the line of trends, but I love the class of yester year. I would love to bring back the st yles of the 1920s and ‘30s. At some point , it became OK to look like a slob, and I hate it . WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TRAVEL DESTINATION? We go to Cabo San Lucas ever y other year, but my dream vacation when I was little was Australia and New Zealand, which we did for our second anniversar y.

WHAT ’S SOME THING THAT PEOPLE ARE SURPRISED TO LE ARN ABOUT MONICA ADAMS? When you turn on the T V, I can appear austere and authoritative, but if you truly know Monica, you know I’m a big kid at hear t . I think that surprises a lot of people.

FRONT &CENTER THE BLACK REP by stephanie wallace
RON HIMES
IN 1976, RON HIMES WAS A BUSINESS STUDENT at Washington University. Motivated
by struggles his friends in the theater department were facing, he created a company for Black theater professionals to hone their craft. Forty-five years later, The Black Rep has become a cultural institution in St. Louis. What was your mission in founding The Black Rep in 1976? I had friends in the theater department at Wash. U who weren’t being cast in productions. I myself had been in a play, and it had piqued my interest, so I went to audition for another. The director told me that he couldn’t cast me because there were no Black characters. That was the impetus to start my own company, and that evolved into The Black Rep. I wanted to create an outlet and opportunities for African Americans who were interested in doing theater but didn’t have a place to pursue it. Did you imagine The Black Rep would have the legacy it does? Not really. When you start something, you’re not looking 50 years down the road. We really did take it one day, one season at a time. Before we knew it, we were celebrating five and then 10 years. Now more than ever, we’re beginning to plan for 45 more years. When we started, I never thought about it that way. We were just trying to make it from season to season. How has Black art in St. Louis changed since the 1970s? In the early days, The Black Rep was really the only company doing Black theater, and a lot of African American actors primarily only worked with us. Now, there are a lot more opportunities to develop and showcase Black talent. A lot of actors have been discovered by other theaters while performing in our productions. A generation of young people has more opportunities because of the work we’ve done over the last 45 years. What lessons has the pandemic taught you? It’s taught us about our own resilience and ability to adapt and be creative. We never stopped producing during the pandemic. Early on, we converted to doing virtual programming for

We want to continue to be a major cultural institution for St. Louis, and that the community continues to support us in turn. Pretty soon, we should be announcing season 46. Hopefully, people continue to come out and see some good theater.
HEALTH & BEAUTY
Feed Your Skin’s Health By Julia M. Johnson
This is us… We have a practice of beauty which grows out of experience and passionate dedication to learning the truth in science and how to finesse the art of beauty around the science of beauty.
Carol Anderson,
B.C.R.N., BSN, CANS Carol has trained with distinguished physicians, Dr. Danny Vleggaar, Aging Specialist and Head of Cosmetic Dermatology practicing in Paris, France and Geneva, Switzerland, Dr. Mauricio de Maio, Plastic Surgeon from Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Dr. Shino Bay Aguilera, Dermatologist in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Beth Schrieber,
Your skin doesn’t look like other organs of the body, so it’s easy to forget that it is one, says Dr. Amy Miller, medical director of the St. Louis Skin Solutions medical spa and skin care clinic. And what you do and don’t put into your body affects your skin’s health just as much as it does other tissues. “Taking care of your skin is just like taking care of your heart or liver,” Miller says. “Your lifestyle plays a major role.”
NOUVEAU SPA COORDINATOR Beth brings hospitality, customer service, and organizational skills from her years of being a flight attendant for TWA and later an operations agent for Southwest Airlines. Beth manages and coordinates Nouveau’s treasured time, daily schedules, and celebratory activities.
THIS IS WHY YOU CHOOSE US…
Diet A well rounded diet and proper hydration are key to keeping skin in good shape. “The general rule is that you should drink about two liters of water each day, but that can vary a bit depending on body mass,” Miller says. “If you are a small person with a small bladder, you may not be able to do two liters, but you should still be conscious of how much you’re taking in. Drink plain water, not soda or coffee because they usually contain caffeine, a diuretic.”

Live Vibrant. Live Beautiful.
Next, pay attention to the nutrients healthy skin needs. “Vitamins and minerals are key, and the trace minerals that are most important for your skin are zinc, copper and selenium,” Miller says. “All of the vitamins A through E are needed at some level.” Healthy fats like omega-3 and omega-6 are necessary as well, and plant-based antioxidants called polyphenols are important. According to Miller, good skin health also means avoiding foods that cause inflammation. “We used to be taught that conditions like acne didn’t have anything to do with diet,” she notes. “That has been proven untrue. We have found that high glycemic-index and high-fat foods can contribute to inflammatory disorders like acne. There is definitely a connection.” High sugar in the diet can be a problem as well. It can structurally change the skin’s collagen, making it stiffer and less functional for good skin health, Miller says. Alcohol can be detrimental too—it’s another diuretic, and it inhibits the metabolism of dietary fats, which can cause the skin’s lipid barrier to malfunction and may lead to dryness and inflammation.
Sleep One of the most overlooked factors in good skin health is proper rest. “Sleep is when repair happens in the body and the skin,” Miller says. “If you are not getting enough rest each night, your body is not repairing damage and injury as efficiently. The importance of sleep can’t be overstated.” Regular exercise has benefits as well. “Whatever makes sense for the general health of your body can be applied to the health of your skin,” she says.
Collagen Miller adds that some supplements also can be helpful for skin. “Collagen supplements used to be thought of as something of a fad, but they have been around for a while now, and studies show they can be beneficial,” she notes. “Powdered preparations can be added to water or other drinks; they contain collagen peptides that are already enzymatically broken down so they are more easily digested. And the body needs amino acids to make new collagen molecules. When you add the right things to your diet, you are giving your tissues the building blocks to create new collagen. It’s like having all the construction materials you need to build a strong wall. Good diet, sleep and self-care — all three are key for healthy skin.”

BLOG OF… 7 KITCHEN TRENDS FOR 2022
The kitchen is the heart of the home, and with so much time spent in this room, it’s important to create a space that feels special and unique designed for your specific taste, lifestyle and needs. That’s what these 2022 kitchen trends are all about! 1. Oversized Hoods Making a statement doesn’t necessarily equal doing something elaborate, and the stunningly sleek and simple oversized hoods we’re seeing more and more of in recent designs are all the proof you need. While it may seem a bit odd to see the scale of a hood go beyond the size of the range, this look of a longer, more “stretched-out” hood offers a bespoke feel that actually goes back to classic European homes. From smooth marble to shiny copper to plaster and everything in between, your options for achieving this look are limitless. 2. Larger Pantries In search of a solution for a light-and-airy, decluttered kitchen space? A large pantry is a perfect option. This additional space is ideal for holding all of your messes and clutter rather than letting your main kitchen bare it all. If you bake a lot, you might consider adding a second oven or dishwasher for extra functionality. If you’re big on entertaining, this space serves as an excellent out-of-view collection area for used glasses and dishes so you can keep the main kitchen clean while guests are over. 3. Custom Cabinetry & Organization Speaking of light and airy spaces, another wonderful way to declutter is by opting for custom cabinetry and those special bells and whistles that help keep all of your everyday items from view. From pull-out canisters, towel hooks and baking

drawers to hidden coffee bars, paper towel holders and pet bowls, the options are endless for ways to make your kitchen feel special and truly your own. Tap into the potential of your kitchen by considering how you use your space and what could make it more functional for you. 4. Bringing in Wood Tones with a Standalone Piece Adding a wooden standalone piece is an easy and unique way to bring in wood tones. If you have an antique or vintage piece you’ve been longing to do something with, this might be your chance! The piece you choose doesn’t necessarily have to be something you would think goes in the kitchen— hutches are always a win, but even a table or dresser can make a space look special and thoughtfully put together with a more organic feel. 5. Mixing Pulls & Knobs The standard used to be pulls for drawers and knobs for cabinet doors. As we’re entering 2022, we’re seeing these rules are out the window. More recent kitchen designs feature doors with pulls, drawers with knobs and an eye-catching mix of both throughout the space. It’s common to mix two, or even three, styles of hardware for a bit more of an eclectic look. Generally speaking, you want to make sure the hardware finishes are the same—some designs do achieve a beautiful mix of finishes, it’s just trickier to accomplish if you’re also mixing styles. When in doubt, stick with mixing one or the other.
6. Natural Stone Beauty is often found in the perfectly imperfect. Natural stone makes for an excellent material that will bring this kind of natural beauty into your kitchen space. Marble instantly invites a warm, timeless, sophisticated feel into any kitchen, so it’s no surprise we’re continuing to see this material largely used as backsplashes and countertop. We’re seeing more and more attention paid to marble countertop edges. Rather than the sleek and simple squared edge, people are opting for the more traditional, Ogee edge to achieve a classic look. 7. Curves Timeless curves truly make a space feel softer and more inviting. Curved cabinetry offers an undeniable elegance in the kitchen, and even something as sleek as a curved island can add an elegant softness to your space. Yet another simple look that can have so much impact on your kitchen space, curved doorways offer such a refined look to your entryways or breakfast nooks. If your kitchen includes counter seating, a breakfast nook area, or your dining table and chairs, you can take advantage of the opportunity to incorporate curves into your space without a full renovation by leaning into curvier pieces for these areas.

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT by stephanie wallace
STEVE ASADORIAN OF ASADORIAN RUG COMPANY Are you seeing any trends in rugs right now? Antique rugs are always popular. Homeowners with older properties are looking for rugs from the 1920s that are Persian or Persian-inspired. Geometric styles lean more casual and modern, and we’re seeing a lot of current designers moving in that direction. Colors that are trending right now include all shades of blue from sky to navy, and gray also has been very popular. What should people consider when looking for a new rug? The best place to start is what size is needed for the area. Then, move onto style and color. At Asadorian Rug Company, we allow people to pick two or three rugs, and we bring them to their home. That way they can see the rugs in their own space with the rest of their decor. That’s really the only way to make sure something is going to look right. How often should rugs receive maintenance? It really depends on the amount of traffic the rug receives. If it’s a high traffic space, you’ll want to have it cleaned and checked around every two years. If it’s a place where less people are walking, then you can wait about four years. It’s important to note that in the Midwest we do see a lot of moth damage. If your rug is in a dark, inactive area, you may find that moths have started to eat it if it’s made from wool, which is the most likely case. To prevent this, make sure you get your rugs moth-proofed. Are any styles or colors less in demand right now? Florals are not as popular right now. People also aren’t looking for red rugs as much.

PICTURE THIS… STYLISH SHELVES by lauren rechan
I AM ALWAYS STUMPED WHEN STYLING SHELVES. I envy those that have just the right eye and know how to put together a multitude of meaningful items, art and books in a chic and beautiful way. Most often I give up after multiple attempts and leave the shelves with much to be desired! These are the photos I am turning to for guidance, hopefully they will inspire you as well to make something magical happen on your shelves.
Even kids’ rooms can have beautiful shelves.
Color block shelves are an interesting way to jazz things up! Did you know you can buy books by color online or sort your own collection!
Build a shelf to store your collections in an artistic manner.
This masterful and eclectic mix of found items is displayed perfectly.
White space as used in graphic design also is important in interior design. Antique and modern books, even magazines, all work together here.
