WELCOME, SPRING! March 20 officially marked the first day of spring, and I couldn’t be happier! Hang those colorful wreaths on the front door, and get those planters ready. I have always loved the four seasons St. Louis has to offer. However, I don’t know about you, but I so enjoyed the warmer 70-degree temps we experienced earlier this month. The smell of grills being fired up, the laughter of children playing outside, seeing neighbors out walking, as well as patrons supporting local restaurant patios, all without having to be bundled from head to toe, made me realize what I have been missing … the simple pleasures of the sights and sounds of the great outdoors. It goes without saying that these past 12-plus months have been long ones for everyone. However, there is so much to look forward to with spring and the warmer temperatures the season brings: flowers blooming (minus the allergies!), lawns and trees turning green, outdoor activities, and of course the return of Cardinals baseball! The home opener is April 8 against the Milwaukee Brewers. My boys and I are so excited to attend a baseball game this year at Busch Stadium! The Cardinals received approval from the city to have 32% capacity at the stadium due to COVID restrictions being reduced. We look forward to hearing St. Louis fans cheering on our beloved team (muffled under masks of course) and eating ballpark hot dogs. With spring weather comes spring fashion. Set aside time to flip through this issue’s fashion spread on page 21, and take in all the bold colors and fabrics this year’s trends have to offer. You finally can swap that heavy winter coat and wool for flirty, lighter attire. Enjoy everything spring has to offer. Before you know it, summer will be here! Be sure to check out our summer camps on page 16, and get your kiddos registered.

BIRTHDAY WISHES WEST COUNTY CENTER

by julia m. johnson PHOTO: COLIN MILLER OF STRAUSS PEYTON PHOTOGRAPHY

FEW MILESTONES ARE AS IMPORTANT TO CHILDREN as their birthdays.

But foster kids sometimes don’t get a chance to celebrate, so West County Center has partnered with the Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition (FACC) Birthday Buddies program to ensure local youngsters enjoy their special days. West County shoppers can participate, too, by purchasing a gift card to a child’s favorite store. Natasha Leonard, director of external relations for FACC, says the Birthday Buddies program makes a tangible difference for kids in foster care. “It matches donors with children who are unlikely to receive anything for their birthdays,” she notes. “Often, they are older youth in an independent living program or institution with no adults in their lives who would buy them gifts.” FACC works to bring children together with foster and adoptive families in metro St. Louis, and the organization has enjoyed many success stories like those of the family members pictured on our cover. The Birthday Buddies gift-giving process is pretty simple, but its effects run deep. Each child with an upcoming birthday provides a wish list, and the wishes are placed in envelopes on a large, decorative birthday cake on Level 1 of the mall near Nordstrom. Shoppers can take an envelope, purchase a gift card from the store indicated, and drop the donation inside the cake, which was made by Parties & Props Event Production Group. West County Center marketing director Sean Phillips says donors can include a personal note to make the child’s birthday even more special. “Each child also receives a coupon for a free slice of cookie cake from Great American Cookies,” he says. “The timing of this program is perfect because we are tying it in with our celebration of Missouri’s 200th birthday this year. We plan to continue the Birthday Buddies initiative next year, too, as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the shopping center’s reopening. We are happy to be able to serve the community in this way.”

MAKING A DONATION AT THE BIRTHDAY BUDDIES CAKE

FACC caseworkers have seen firsthand the joy kids feel when they realize people care about their happiness. “Some of our children would not receive gifts at all if it weren’t for the program,” says recruiter Maddie Bobbitt. “These are not just any gifts, either; the kids receive items they actually want. It’s huge for a child in foster care to see birthday wishes come to life.” Family support specialist Karen Alyasiry agrees that the kids truly are touched by St. Louisans’ generosity. “To know that someone in the community is thinking of them and wanting to celebrate them brings comfort to their hearts,” she says. “Giving is not just about making a donation; it’s about making a difference.” Leonard says that when a girl in foster care was asked recently about the gifts she had received, she replied, “It was huge that somebody in the world thought about me and felt that I mattered.” &

System of a Down isn’t the only phenomenon that hails from Armenia. (Say what?) System is a loud and proud alt-metal band of Armenian-Americans, if you didn’t know—and who would have expected you to, right? But even fewer readers, we surmise, would know of chess

phenom Levon Aronian, a Grandmaster (GM) from Armenia who is moving to The Lou and will represent the United States in future competitions. We don’t know of any fans who have a jersey with his name stitched on the back like ‘Pujols’ or ‘Warner.’ So far, that is. Aronian, 38, has been a major brainpower in the sport since he was a tween, winning the 1994 World Youth Chess Championship before he’d even reached age 12. Aronian went on to lead the Armenian national team to three Olympic gold medals (2006, 2008, 2012) and one World Team Championship gold (2011). The St. Louis Chess Club has become a second home to Aronian. After winning the 2019 St. Louis Rapid & Blitz, he spoke fondly of his many visits to the CWE. At the closing ceremony he remarked, “I love playing in St. Louis, where chess players are proud to be chess players, and we’re loved.” Aronian gives much of the credit to Rex Sinquefield and his family; Sinquefield is co-founder of the Chess Club. The so-called ‘Sinquefield Effect’ is largely credited with the resurgence of American chess over the last decade and the evolution of St. Louis into the nation’s chess capital. Aronian is currently ranked No. 5 in the world, and he will join the world’s fellow Top 20 players Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So, Leinier Dominguez and Hikaru Nakamura to represent the United States. Throughout his career, Aronian has amassed many individual victories as well, including the World Cup (2005, 2017), St. Louis Rapid & Blitz (2017, 2019) and the Sinquefield Cup (2015, 2018). Aronian also is a world champion in three formats; he’s a former Chess960 World Champion (2006, 2007), World Rapid Champion (2009) and Blitz World Champion (2010). Your move, St. Louis.

Forest Park

The dinosaurs are coming! The dinosaurs are coming! Run away? Um, not unless you could use the exercise. Just chill. These are not the blood-thirsty reptiles that scared the bejeebers out of anybody who’s watched all or some of the Jurassic Park movies, so have no fear, silly Homo sapiens. Between one dozen and two dozen true-to-life representations—that’s right, kids; some have fur, others feathers!—of the long-extinct reptiles have arrived at the zoo for an exhibit opening Saturday, April 17, and running through Halloween. The temporary exhibit is the Emerson ‘Dinoroarus.’ Coronavirus safety precautions necessitated that the former occupant, Emerson Children’s Zoo, vacate the 3.5-acre space last fall. Some of the long-gone reptiles to be featured are animatronic; they’ll appear to move naturally. But you won’t have to worry about them nibbling on your favorite straw purse as the children’s zoo goats were wont to do, much less tear off an arm or leg for a snack. And who, other than paleontologists, is more fascinated by dinosaurs than kids? This engaging attraction will feature 16 groupings of colorful, prehistoric critters, some of them roaring and spitting—not on anybody, we surmise—or placidly munching on lush vegetation. Any grade-school kid’s favorites will appear. Some are herbivores, others are carnivores. (When I was in elementary school, sometime after the Cretaceous period came to a close, we called them, respectively, ‘plant eaters’ or ‘meat eaters.’) Representing a vast span of geological time, tens of millions of years, they include: Triceratops, Tyrannosaurus rex, Quetzalcoatlus (pictured), Brachiosaurus and Parasaurolophus. But not all of the critters in the exhibit will be replicas of extinct creatures we learned about only through the fossil record. With not merely a nod to the erstwhile children’s zoo, there’ll be otters and other zoo animals—but no lions, tigers and bears. Guinea hens, for example.

Age is nothing but a number. So says Wauneen Rucker, crowned Mrs. Missouri America 2020 and competing for the national title of Mrs. America at this writing. The 2021 pageant kicked off March 19 and wraps up March 27 at the Westgate Hotel in Las Vegas. Aside from being only the second African American to win the state contest in its 46 years of operation, Rucker is the first over age 50. She is 57! A hat she is wearing during the competition (pictured, with her state costume), with more 1904 World’s Fair flair than a stick could be shook at, was designed by Dianne Isbell, who has been a resident designer at Saint Louis Fashion Fund and is to be a featured designer for the Kentucky Derby Hat Museum in Louisville, Kentucky. Rucker has worn many other hats in her life, including that of a U.S. Marine and a St. Louis police officer. And she’s thrown a mortarboard into the air at least two times: She earned a B.S. in criminology and criminal justice from UMSL and a master’s in management from Webster University. Along the way, she’s had to shake flour out of a chef’s hat, too—Rucker has an associate’s degree in baking and pastry arts from SLCC-Forest Park. Today, she stays busy as a practicing minister, mother of two and wife. The charity she has chosen to promote is The St. Louis Area Diaper Bank, which ensures that low- to no-income families have access to an adequate supply.

LAST ISSUE’S Q&A Where did Rush Limbaugh attend college? In deference to his parents, Rush Limbaugh enrolled at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, but dropped out after two semesters. His mother was quoted later as saying, “He just didn’t seem interested in anything except radio.”

THERE IS A SEVERE BLOOD SHORTAGE. Healthy donors needed.

downtown A vibrant patchwork quilt made up of immigrant and refugee women is being sewn together, one stitch at a time, downtown at The Collective Thread. Terri Stipanovich is co-founder and CEO of the nonprofit, which was established in 2009 as Faith That Works. What started as a mission to help with social justice causes for women in Africa transitioned into a business model that teaches women to sew, providing a skill to earn a liveable wage. “In the summer of 2019, I was working to build our small-batch manufacturing operation,” she says. At the time, she could not have known this would position the outfit well when the pandemic suddenly shut down or slowed commerce last March for most everyone. Stipanovich innovates ways to empower women who have immigrated here, as well as refugees from the civil war in Somalia who have severely overcrowded a camp established in neighboring Ethiopia. A tent camp built to temporarily accommodate around 10,000 refugees has become a long-term home for as many as 80,000. “It touched my heart,” she says. “We just don’t realize how insulated we are here.” From her three dozen-some visits to East Africa, Stipanovich has absorbed just how desperate daily life can be. But she is dedicated to making it better for people there, and here. Part of The Collective Thread’s cross-cultural outreach mission is mentoring women in sewing, which for many is their first job in their new country. Small-batch manufacturing, from concept to completion, typically is performed within the building’s 7,000 square feet, but during the pandemic, many sewers have had to work from home for months. Much of the business revolves around contract work, but Stipanovich and business partner Annie Miller were able to pivot from mostly designing and creating apparel to making PPE (gowns and masks for the ongoing health crisis), thanks to a federal grant through the CARES Act. For Bibi and Jaky, a married couple who had to flee Afghanistan, prospects were stark had they remained. Jaky was working as an interpreter for the American military and as such, under threat of death from the Taliban. After an STIPANOVICH INNOVATES unimaginable ordeal, the pair and WAYS TO EMPOWER their three kids have managed to settle into family life in the metro. WOMEN WHO HAVE Jaky, who speaks four languages, IMMIGRATED HERE ... has parlayed his fluency into a job here with a bank, while Bibi is one of The Collective Thread’s most accomplished and efficient workers. She has been making masks practically nonstop, often 300 or more a day, for which she is well compensated. In fact, they’re buying a home. Talk about a stitch in time. The next sewing classes at The Collective Thread start May 11. Several product lines are available for purchase online to support the women who make them here and in Ethiopia; e.g., colorful and washable Africa Market Bags and items in The Collective Boutique, like baby clothes, backpacks, jewelry, and masks. Stipanovich also is available to speak about her unique mission at any meeting or event. Visit thecollectivethread.com.

I AM FEELING OPTIMISTIC about the pandemic,

and as regular readers know, I am not an optimist. As you would expect of me, I listen to the update from the COVID-19 Task Force twice a week, and though they seem somewhat concerned about the new variants popping up, they feel confident scientists will keep evolving the vaccines. I really think one day soon, I’ll be heading to CVS and getting a shot in my arm. So I thought I would share my successes and failures during the pandemic. Patty’s List of Failures: ✘ I tried to play golf. I actually took lessons. Well, I took one lesson and didn’t show up for the rest. It was too hot. I thought you could just use the club like a baseball bat, and the truth is, I just wanted to drink beer at the end of the lesson. ✘ I tried to paint on canvas with oils. My friend Laurie got me all set up with supplies. I consider myself somewhat artistic, so I assumed it would be fun. After I showed several people my finished painting and they asked what it was, I stopped. (It was a flower.)

✘ I looked at all of the photos I have collected

over the years and planned to put together baby books for my son who is 32 and my daughter who is 24 and decided if I waited this long, what’s another few years? ✘ I fractured both of my feet. My first was a stress fracture from too much walking. I blame one of my friends who is in better shape than me. I got tired of always seeing her ‘behind’ in front of me, so I pushed a little too hard. The second fracture happened when I ran into a dining room chair. I can’t explain it. So, I spent a total of 10 weeks in a boot. Patty’s List of Successes: ✔ I cleaned out all of the closets in my house. The stuff I owned was embarrassing. I hope that it landed in a happy home, especially the clothes with the tags still on them. ✔I continued to write a lot. You all saw my columns, but ever since the riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6, I have become a letter/Twitter writing machine. Normally, I would just call my elected officials to voice my opinion, but I never could

get through. So, I wrote and e-mailed, and then I discovered Twitter. I have become the school principal: ‘Why are you sitting in the galley? Get down on the floor of the Senate and pay attention.’ Or ‘You voted against that bill; you can’t take credit for it now.’ Or ‘Great job at your Senate hearing today. You will be confirmed!’ I try not to be mean or rude. There is zero chance anyone reads my Tweets, but I feel powerful when I send them! ✔ I read, and I read, and I read some more. I need to read four books a month for my “Hooked on Books” column. I try very hard not to give a negative review, which means I need to read at least five books. It’s a lot of books! I am glad I have Kindle Unlimited; sometimes authors will send me their books to review, and there are a few websites that let me download books before they go to print. But books are my addiction, so it has to be fed. I am keeping my fingers crossed that by the time you read this, you have a shot in your arm. But continue to wear a mask, wash your hands and social distance. Peace, my peeps.

homes and properties, an experienced real estate specialist is an integral part of the transaction. Keller Williams Luxury Real Estate has several offices in St. Louis with agents who have the specialization necessary to market and sell high-end homes The company’s extensive network offers a collaborative, service-driven approach to the luxury real estate market. Every day, Keller Williams closes more than $1 billion in real estate worldwide. In 2020, around 10% of total sales for the company was for residential properties that were priced $1 million or more, and it ultimately sold more than $33.5 billion in the luxury market. “We believe that luxury is not just a price point; it’s an experience,” director of growth Brady Sandahl says. “The market has its DIRECTOR OF GROWTH own language, and BRADY SANDAHL our company culture

is specifically designed to deliver exceptional service to the buyers and sellers we represent. There’s a reason we are recognized as the House of Excellence.” To ensure its agents can best meet clients’ needs, Sandahl says the company equips them with extensive resources. “We provide models and services that allow properties to be marketed on the local, regional and national level,” he explains. “Keller Williams was a significant player across the top 25 metropolitan markets in the U.S in 2020. Our agents have access to an extensive real estate network, which allows them to find buyers and help St. Louis residents invest in properties in other cities. Plus, our clients can count on consistent experience if they need to work with different offices.” Keller Williams’ vast network of resources is especially useful in today’s competitive market. Sandahl notes that the company’s agents have a strong understanding of the movement of luxury real estate both locally and across the country. “The volume of luxury transactions is higher than it ever has been,” he says. “We’re seeing both people who have saved large sums of money and those taking advantage of low interest rates buying right now, which is one reason the market is so strong. With limited inventory, we equip our agents with the knowledge to determine where buyers are coming from and provide them with the tools to help their clients close the deal.”

For luxury sellers, the company is able to provide insight into how homes are selling locally. “Our agents have their fingers on the pulse of the St. Louis market,” Sandahl says. “They know what buyers are willing to pay and what they are looking for in a property, and they have the resources to aggressively market a home. We always make sure a property is presented correctly. That attention to detail is noticeable throughout the transaction.” All luxury properties with Keller Williams receive global syndication through Mansion Global, The Wall Street Journal and Barron’s, and the company invests in high traffic print and digital services. Ultimately, Keller Williams Luxury Real Estate is dedicated to helping build communities. Sandahl notes that along with its impressive sales and expertise in luxury properties, the company is known for its philanthropic endeavors around the world. “We are a communication-oriented, servant-led company that puts people first,” he says. “Every day, we serve the communities that need our help.” & MA JOR PLAYER S SPECIAL SECTION

The Ultimate Private Jet Service Experience TOM BUFFINGTON

E

ven amidst the global pandemic, private aviation has continued to offer safe and secure solutions to travel. The industry now leads the way in the revival of the travel industry as a whole through creative partnerships and collaborations that offer seamless end-to-end journeys – a reason to take to the skies. Jet Linx Aviation, a locally-focused private jet company, further expanded its Elevated Lifestyle (EL) client benefits program throughout 2020 and early 2021, curating new relationships with special incentives for only Jet Linx Jet Card members and aircraft owners – and a focus on distanced, exclusive accommodations in sought-after destinations. “We are conscious that the desire to travel has not waned during the pandemic,” noted Tom Buffington, Jet Linx St. Louis president. “What increased was the desire to know you are safe during travel, and well cared for at your destination. The partnerships our Company developed throughout the pandemic focus on the core client desire to feel safe, and offer escapism and wonder outside of crowded, public spaces.” In September 2020, Jet Linx first launched a new program designed to provide complete peace of mind through a plane-to-

pillow travel experience – the Elevated Lifestyle Preferred Hotel Program. This first-in-industry program brings together over 70 luxury hotels worldwide into a shared benefits program, with special rates and other accommodations for Jet Linx clients. These partner properties offer the highest standards in both luxury and guest safety, with over 6,900 standard rooms and 630 private villas represented within the program. “Plus, our clients enjoy complimentary booking assistance via our dedicated Hotels Concierge Team,” Buffington noted, “meaning our members and owners enjoy excellence in service from their Jet Linx jet to their stay at any of our respected hotel program partners. There is simply no other program out there that affords such confidence in truly turnkey luxury travel.” Other new EL partners include the Dormie Network, offering private tee times and accommodations at six private golf courses nationwide, and Embark Beyond, a bespoke travel agency partner poised to offer trip planning support to round out a perfect private jet trip. “The partners in our program truly compliment the private jet lifestyle,” Buffington continued. “Our partnership team looks for quality, comfort, and adherence to the highest possible safety standards – just as our Jet Linx team provides on each and every flight.”

Our goal is that you never have to ask – we have everything there for you.

Jet Linx has always prioritized safety, earning the three highest levels of safety ratings in the private aviation industry. The Company continued to adapt to concerns raised by the COVID-19 pandemic, implementing protocols and procedures to provide an even more sanitary environment to give clients peace of mind when traveling. By using member-only private aviation terminals with smaller teams and bypassing long security lines at commercial airports, Jet Linx achieves greater social distancing than commercial carriers. “We took a look at every one of the touchpoints where we need to interact with customers, and we asked ourselves, ‘Is this necessary?’” said Buffington. Jet Linx also remains the first and only operator in the worldwide aviation industry to utilize and regularly reapply the BIOPROTECTUs™ System for long-term antimicrobial protection in each of its 19 private, client-only terminals and fleet of jet aircraft. Two Centers of Excellence of the Global Virus Network proved the system’s antimicrobial formulation kills and provides residual surface protection against SARS-CoV-2 (the coronavirus that causes COVID-19) for longer than six weeks. With all of these added safety measures, Jet Linx still maintains the highest level of personalized service, catering to its clients’ specific needs and learning their likes and dislikes for a truly customized flight experience. “Our goal is that you never have to ask – we have everything there for you, whether it’s your favorite candy or the kind of nuts you like waiting at your seat,” Buffington says. “Couple that service with incredible partnerships, and you have a great reason to fly.”

PARENT TRAP WHY CAMP?

by dr. tim jordan AFTER MORE THAN A YEAR OF QUARANTINE and virtual school, kids are in dire need of time to really connect with their peers. The best place I know for true friendships is summer camp. We had two weeks of camp last summer and were able to create a safe bubble where kids could feel free and play. This summer will be even safer. But there are many other reasons beyond COVID fatigue for why kids need camp. What is missing from the pictures on this page? Look closely, and you will notice that not one of these teenage girls is holding her cell phone, and they all survived! That is one of the best things about girls coming to a week of camp; they unplug from technology and plug into nature and friends. Probably one of the most major benefits of a week away at summer camp is the friendships made. Without parents around, kids get to choose who they hang out with, and that autonomy gives them a sense of independence missing in their everyday lives. Because no one knows you, it’s also an opportunity to reinvent yourself, as you have no reputation to uphold. This creates the space for kids to let down their masks and try new activities and personas. At my camp, we spend the morning doing circle time where girls can share their stories and hear other’s experiences as well. They learn that they are not the only one who has faced adversities, and this sharing quickly brings the group closer. Every girl needs a safe space like this to learn, increase their self-awareness and grow. Being out in nature all day also slows down the pace of life, and kids actually get to experience some unstructured down time. This summer is the 30th anniversary of Camp Weloki, and we have always made sure that our camps contain lots of unstructured time that kids lack in their normal routines. That’s where camp becomes magical, with so many moments of spontaneous fun and creativity. You walk everywhere, and you actually give people your full attention because texts and social media don’t distract you. This generates more in-depth conversations and, therefore, more intimacy. There are endless opportunities to hang out and enjoy your new friends: sharing a cabin, eating your meals together, singing around a campfire, taking long hikes or canoe rides, watching sunsets, and star gazing at night. Add to that all of the spontaneous explosions of laughter, pranking the counselors, and creating new games, skits and songs, and you’ve got friends for life. The relationships you experience at summer camp are unique and magical. The absence of technology, the slow pace and unstructured time, and the high level of trust, camaraderie and shared experience create close ties that can last a lifetime. After suffering through the pandemic, kids need and deserve the freedom and connections that summer camp provides. &

OFF the cuff w/claiborne dr. richard lehman

For more than three decades, Dr. Richard Lehman has offered his exper tise as an or thopedic surgeon to some of the top athletes in the world. He’s ser ved as team physician for three National Hockey League franchises and has covered four Olympics and seven Track & Field World Championships. You may find him in a white coat more than a spor t coat , but here, he shares insight into his personal st yle, some of his career highlights and his recently published book . WHAT ’S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU’ VE DE ALT WITH DURING YOUR CAREER ? There are two things. One is telling an athlete that they can’ t come back . The other is telling parents that their child isn’ t going to succeed at their chosen spor t at the collegiate or professional level. That conversation probably happens two or three times a week . WHO ARE THE GRE ATEST ATHLE TES YOU’ VE WORKED WITH, AND WHAT MADE THEM SO SPECIAL? I don’ t know if anyone will ever come close to Jackie Joyner-Kersee’s record in the heptathlon. She also is a really great person and friend. Second, Serena Williams. You just don’ t see that kind of talent and drive ever y day. Wayne Gretskey had to be one of the greatest ever. Roger Federer is an amazing athlete. I have the utmost respect for Aeneas Williams. He’s a guy who you would ask to babysit your kids in the hope that he’d make them into mini versions of himself. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR BOOK , HOW TO R. A .I.S.E . AN ATHLE TE : THE FORMUL A BY RENOWNED ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON TO THE ATHLE TES. I was approached about the book because there wasn’ t any thing out there about the dynamics of how to raise an athlete. I used my 30 years of experience to create a manual on how to do it and have your kids walk away from their athletic career, at whatever level that may be, having had a rewarding experience. I wish I had written it before I had three kids playing spor ts, not after. I learned I was a terrible tennis parent . WHAT ARE SOME OF THE RESPONSES YOU’ VE GOT TEN FROM PEOPLE WHO’ VE HAD THE CHANCE TO RE AD IT ? The response has been great. Coaches have purchased a lot of copies, and I hope parents read it and reflect on how they can do better. My wife’s cousin read it and called me to say he wished he’d had the book before he pushed his son, a highly ranked swimmer, so hard that he gave up the sport. OTHER THAN YOUR WHITE COAT, WHAT ARE THE GO-TO ITEMS IN YOUR CLOSE T ? Just a pair of Lululemon sweatpants, t-shir t and jacket . YOUR WIFE , DR. MICHELE KOO, IS A PL A STIC SURGEON. HOW MUCH SHOP IS TALKED AT THE DINNER TABLE? If I have a non-or thopedic question, I’ll ask her because she’s really smar t . But generally, we don’ t talk shop, and that ’s probably why we’re still married.

FAVORITE DINING SPOTS IN ST. LOUIS? Annie Gunn’s, Ruth’s Chris, 801 Fish, and Katie’s Piz za and Pasta Osteria BEST PL ACE TO TRAVEL? There’s no question about the answer : Australia. WHERE DO YOU GE T YOUR FA SHION TIPS AND ST YLE? My daughter Sydney. She berates the things I wear and then we’ll go shopping together.

EASTER BRUNCH: COCKTAILS & MOCKTAILS

by bridger dale, bartender at cinder house Easter brunch feels like the perfect time to usher in spring and embrace refreshing, fruity, floral and herbaceous cocktails. While traditional favorites include a French 75 or Aperol Spritz, I am loving the infused tequila-based Clementina we recently added to the bar menu at Cinder House. It’s like an adult orange creamsicle with a touch of heat. India Stevens curates our cocktail and spirits list, and we currently are working with her on new seasonal drinks for spring and summer.

Have an nnouncement? Share the good news with to be considered for a feature in one of our upcoming issues, a free service we offer to St. Louisans. We are always looking for new weddings and engagements to announce, so email tellus@townandstyle.com to be considered. 314 657 2100 townandstyle.com

〉〉

Balance is super important when creating a cocktail or mocktail. Flavors should complement, not overpower, each other. For brunch, I am a firm believer that it is always beneficial to use fruit in drinks. It creates a lighter profile and provides easy sipping in the late morning and throughout the afternoon. Don’t be afraid to incorporate a bit of heat either. Chili peppers are very flavorful and, when used in moderation, can add a bit of pizazz. Many cocktails start with two parts spirit, one part sour (like lemon or lime juice), and one part sweet (like simple syrup). When I create a mocktail, I generally use this formula as a guide—and remove the spirits of course. I like to incorporate fresh juices when in season and include alternative sweeteners like honey and agave instead of solely using simple syrup. Consider topping a mocktail with a splash of club soda or ginger ale to add a bit of fizz, along with fresh herbs for a colorful garnish. Incorporate flavors you generally enjoy. At the end of the day, ‘good’ is completely subjective! I encourage people to be adventurous when it comes to trying new cocktails and mocktails. Even after years of bartending experience, I still sometimes see ingredients on cocktail lists that I do not recognize, so I make a point to branch out of my comfort zone and try them!

EASTER BRUNCH PUNCH

1 OZ. PINEAPPLE JUICE 1 OZ. GRAPEFRUIT JUICE 1 OZ. LEMON JUICE 1 OZ. SIMPLE SYRUP 2 OZ. CLUB SODA OR SPRITE 5 RASPBERRIES LEMON, GRAPEFRUIT AND PINEAPPLE SLICES FOR GARNISHES

Add all ingredients except raspberries and garnishes to a shaker with a few ice cubes. Shake, pour over ice in a Collins glass (or glass of choice), and top with either club soda or Sprite. Garnish with raspberries and lemon, grapefruit and pineapple slices. Serve and enjoy!

CLEMENTINA

1.5 OZ. CORRALEJO REPOSADO TEQUILA 0.5 OZ. LIQUOR 43 0.5 OZ. COINTREAU 0.5 OZ. PINEAPPLE JUICE 0.5 OZ. LIME JUICE 0.25 OZ. AGAVE SYRUP 1 THAI BIRD CHILI PEPPER 1 CLEMENTINE ORANGE WHEEL, PEELED 1 CLEMENTINE ORANGE, SLICED TAJIN SEASONING FOR RIM OF GLASS

Cut Thai bird chili into 10 slices; add one slice (this will ensure the beverage is not too hot; you can always add more heat later) to a shaker with the peeled clementine orange. Muddle the two together. Add all other liquid ingredients, and shake well. Strain over a Collins glass filled with ice. Gently wet the rim of the glass with the cocktail mixture before adding Tajin seasoning and an orange slice. Enjoy! MARCH 24, 2021 | townandstyle.com

COVER STORY

by julia m. johnson THE WORD ‘SPRING’ CONJURES UP IMAGES OF FRESHNESS and renewal, and the contents of your closet are a large part of that. Chances are, you’ve spent more time at home in loungewear than you normally would, so use the warming temps as a nudge to hunt for new looks in apparel and footwear. West County Center is an ideal destination for shoppers looking to welcome spring in style, says marketing director Sean Phillips. Julie Goulet, store manager at Johnston & Murphy, says new men’s shoes and apparel are arriving at the store in time for some spring retail therapy. The company, which has supplied dress shoes to every U.S. president since Millard Fillmore, introduced 11 new styles for men this spring. “They’re all unique and exceptional, including a hybrid golf shoe that you can wear from the street to the green,” Goulet says. “The shoes feature cool-touch technology that keeps your feet comfortable at all times. You can go from lunch to the course without changing them.” Other exciting spring introductions are a new line of men’s golf apparel, a collection of casual clothing, and Activate, an ultra-light shoe lined with ventilated soles and temperature control technology. “Styles can be previewed at johnstonmurphy.com,” Goulet says. “Whether you are going to the office or heading out on the town, we have looks to match. Lately we have seen a huge trend toward ultra-comfortable casual shoes and clothes, but we know customers also need more formal looks from time to time.” Goulet says a recent customer was so excited to start dressing up again that he came in to buy shoes for New Year’s Eve even though it is several months away. “He and his wife said they had spent so much time in lockdown that once they got their coronavirus vaccines, it was time to hit the mall for some new styles,” she notes.

JULIE GOULET, STORE MANAGER AT JOHNSTON & MURPHY

“People have been at home so much that they are eager to get back out there, enjoy themselves and dress the part.” There’s additional excitement afoot at Vans and Tradehome Shoes, both of which are celebrating important anniversaries. Vans has been making athletic and casual footwear for 55 years, and Tradehome has sold dress and casual shoes for a century. Phillips says both companies’ longevity is an impressive achievement, and they are continuing to grow. In fact, Tradehome’s new West County store is its first St. Louis location, and its sixth in Missouri. The company was named for the concept of ‘trading at home,’ or encouraging consumers to shop in their local communities. The new store, located on Level 2 near Macy’s, features brands for the family including Birkenstock, Hey Dude, Sorel, Dansko and Brooks. “It’s doubly exciting for us to welcome a store that is new to the mall and the St. Louis market, and we are always glad to celebrate important milestones with our retailers,” Phillips says. “We are looking forward to more announcements of this kind in the months ahead.” &

BEN GRUPE OF TEMPUS FROM COMPETING IN THE PRESTIGIOUS CULINARY COMPETITION Bocuse d’Or to earning a James Beard Award nomination, Ben Grupe continues to make his mark in the culinary world. The hometowner has been cooking professionally since he was 18, and he’s managed to thrive in the intensely competitive industry. In 2020, he undertook one of the biggest challenges for any chef: launching his own restaurant. Growing up in St. Louis, Grupe enjoyed visiting Forest Park with family, and he recalls spending the 4th of July each year at Fair St. Louis, taking in the spectacle and celebration. “St. Louis is where my friends and family are,” he says. “It’s always been my home base.” He had an interest in food from a young age. His father was an avid fisherman and often grilled and barbecued, which captured his attention. “I didn’t take cooking seriously at first, but I always was fascinated by it,” he notes. Professionally, Grupe entered the culinary field by happenstance. He secured a job as a dishwasher at a restaurant where many of his friends already worked. Initially, the lifestyle of hospitality work is what drew him in. “There was a lot of camaraderie and a party environment, and that’s what attracted me at the time,” he says. “It was exciting; however, it wasn’t sustainable. Drugs and alcohol are among the biggest problems that plague our industry. When I started taking cooking more seriously, that part lost its luster. I knew I had to shape up in order to get ahead and make something of myself.” While working at a local club, Grupe was introduced to The Greenbrier Culinary Apprenticeship Program at The Greenbriar, a world-class resort in West Virginia. The three-year apprenticeship is designed to offer the training and refinement necessary for a successful career in the food and beverage industry. It covers a variety of skills, including classical cuisine, regional and international cooking, butchery, and gastronomy. “It’s like a boot camp for chefs,” Grupe says. “The program is super rigorous with a very low pass rate. It’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. Graduates come out extremely well rounded and disciplined with a strong foundation for how to carry themselves in the kitchen.”

The program’s curriculum includes competitive practical exams, and Grupe discovered he enjoyed that aspect. “Many chefs who go through the program end up competing in the Culinary Olympics,” he notes. In 2009, he applied for the U.S. team after completing his apprenticeship. Ultimately, he was accepted and competed for six years, serving as team captain in 2016. “I was more or less obsessed with it for a while,” he says. “I enjoy the focus you put into an almost unachievable goal that can only be reached through rigor and determination. Plus, the camaraderie of the team was always very inspiring.” After settling back in St. Louis with his wife, Grupe made a name for himself in the local culinary scene. He worked in several restaurants, including a very successful tenure as executive chef at Bengelina Hospitality Group’s flagship restaurant, Elaia. He enjoys being able to help draw attention to the St. Louis restaurant community. “There’s a lot of talent here, but unfortunately, it often goes unnoticed,” he says. “When friends come from out of town, they are always wowed by the variety and good vibe here. The city is definitely on the move.” Now, Grupe is building St. Louis’ reputation through his own restaurant, Tempus, located in The Grove. It launched to tremendous success last year, but he notes that opening a restaurant during a global pandemic has been a roller coaster ride. “COVID-19 has disrupted everything, so we’ve been taking it one day at a time,” he says. “While there is more stability now, things still aren’t back to 100% normal yet. Our team has been very proactive when it comes to keeping staff and guests safe. There has been something exciting about rallying together.” Inspiration for Tempus’ menu comes from a variety of places, according to Grupe. “Our menu is ingredient driven, but it also comes from my own food memories and trends I notice,” he says, adding that he is often inspired to try new plating methods or flavor combinations that he sees on social media. “You see something cool and take a crack at it yourself.” The chef is excited to be able to look out from the restaurant’s kitchen at a full house in the not-too-distant future. “I want to see people’s expressions when they eat my food!” he says. “For any chef, getting to witness someone enjoy a dining experience you created is pretty incredible.” &

GINGER CHILE SAUCE

SHISHITO PEPPERS

1. In a dry skillet, toast the chiles until fragrant. Grind in spice grinder.

1. Place the peppers on a preheated grill and cook until lightly charred, or lay the peppers out on a sheet pan and broil in the oven until lightly charred.

2. Heat vinegar, fish sauce and sugar in a pot until sugar is dissolved. 3. Whisk in chiles; allow to infuse overnight before use.

2. Place the peppers in a bowl, and toss with the ginger chile sauce. 3. Garnish with togarashi and crispy brown rice. 4. Reserve any remaining sauce.

Milk Fed: A Novel by Melissa Broder I should just stop reading books that are on the 'most anticipated list’ because I am inevitably disappointed. This story of a woman who is obsessed about the food she eats, thanks in part to her crazy mother’s own obsession about weight, lets us follow her through her therapist-required, 90-day detox from her mom. At times the story is funny; at others, heartbreaking, and as a mom myself, I just wanted her misery to end.

Girl A by Abigail Dean It’s hard to believe this is the first book Dean has written because it is unforgettable. The dark and edgy thriller about a family in which the children have been abused and the aftermath once they are removed from the home will show you both the resilience of kids and the coping mechanisms we use to survive. If you don’t shed a tear or two, well, get your heart checked. It is that good.

Still Life by Louise Penney A friend introduced me to the series of books written by Penney, and I’m sure happy she did. For any of you who love a good mystery, you might want to join me as I make my way through all of her books as Inspector Gamache solves the crimes—murders, of course—that happen in Three Pines, just a little north of the U.S. border in Canada. They are quick reads, very entertaining and I am already well into my third in the series. FYI, Penney and Hillary Clinton just announced they are collaborating on a new novel. I can’t wait!

My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite This novel set in Lagos is surprisingly funny, and no, my emotions haven’t been killed from watching too much Dateline. The story involves two sisters, one beautiful, the other not so much. The beautiful one tends to keep a knife handy and knows how to use it. Unfortunately, the other sister, out of a sense of loyalty, learns how to, well, shall we say, clean up after her. They are quite a pair. Enjoyed it!

THE GOOD LIFE THE GATESWORTH

PHOTO: GREGG GOLDMAN PHOTOGRAPHY

COVER STORY

by stephanie wallace RIGHT NOW, IT’S MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER that we can find safety and

contentment at home. It’s why Mary Mennig decided to make the move to The Gatesworth. For more than 30 years, the retirement community has been dedicated to offering its residents innovative services and luxury amenities to ensure they remain active, happy and comfortable. While Mennig originally is from the Midwest, she moved to California in the 1970s where she studied business at the University of Southern California. There she met her husband, Jan, who worked as the chief of police in Culver City. They both excelled at their careers, and Mennig says they always took time to expand their horizons through art and travel. After retiring, they decided to escape the hustle and bustle and move just outside of Yosemite National Park. “The whole county didn’t even have a streetlight, and if you wanted to see a play, the high school had to be putting one on,” she recalls. The couple started taking regular trips to San Francisco and realized they wanted a more urban lifestyle. “We investigated and found that St. Louis was the ideal place to move, even though we didn’t have friends or family in the area,” Mennig says. “We settled in the Central West End, which was wonderful because we were close to things like theater, music and museums.” When Jan passed away last year, Mennig knew it was time for another transition and started looking at independent living options. She wanted something with top-notch amenities, plenty of opportunities for socialization and a central location. The Gatesworth met all Mennig’s requirements and more. “They have absolutely everything a person could need; it’s just fantastic,” she says. “Plus, the community is in a great location. I easily can access all of the venues I love in the city.” Along with amenities like the beautiful grounds and walking paths, the fitness center, pool and world-class dining options, little touches stood out to Mennig. “There is a place where you can pot your plants without worrying about getting soil all over your apartment,” she notes. “It’s wonderful that they think of small things like that to make people happy.”

RESIDENT MARY MENNIG

Mennig moved to the community in February. The staff ensured that the transition was as smooth as possible, start to finish. The Gateworth has a move-in coordinator who helps residents every step of the way. Mennig opted for an additional service that included assistance with unpacking and organizing her new home. “When I walked in the door, everything was in place,” she says. “I didn’t have to go through the hassle of moving.” Everyone at the community has been very welcoming, and Mennig is looking forward to more social opportunities in the SE NI OR LIV IN G future, including learning to play mahjong and enjoying happy hour events. “I’m excited to start making new friends, and I can’t imagine anyone ever being bored here,” she says. “I want to live a good life, and I think The Gatesworth is the place to do it.” & SPEC IAL SECT ION

How much thought do you put into dinner? Whatever your answer, it’s probably not close to the consideration the food and beverage teams at senior living communities put into executing each meal service. They work hard to accommodate the unique dietary preferences and needs of residents every day, a task that can be especially daunting when faced with unexpected challenges like those presented by COVID-19. We reached out to two local communities to learn more about their dining operations.

Friendship Village Chesterfield

Creek Valley Retirement Community

The main dining room at Friendship Village Chesterfield seats up to 320 people, and the community has another bistro dining option that seats 70. Food and beverage director Emmanual Teferi says there are many challenges with serving such a large and diverse population. “We offer a lot of meal options, but there may be individuals with special dietary needs beyond what’s on the menu,” he says. “Our chefs and dieticians listen to residents to create solutions.” That ingenuity certainly was put to the test when the pandemic hit last spring.

Opening earlier this month, Creek Valley Retirement Community in Ellisville built a strong relationship with the local health department to ensure seniors could safely move in and begin enjoying amenities. With the majority of staff and residents vaccinated, the all-inclusive community was able to open with regular dining services. “We’re following best practices and local guidelines, including wearing masks, using other personal protective equipment and following social distancing protocols” says Kelly Jo Hinrichs, vice president of marketing for Resort Lifestyle Communities. “We had the benefit of opening a year out from the start of the pandemic, so Creek Valley hasn’t been as impacted as other communities.”

Currently, the dining spaces at Friendship Village are operating at 50% capacity, but the community’s food and beverage services functioned as delivery only for much of 2020. Teferi says it was a big challenge to completely switch operations, but the team handled the transition well. It created a call center to manage orders, and the brigade developed a system to put together and deliver meals. “We had to streamline the menu some to make sure we could operate efficiently and execute everything properly, but the residents loved it,” he says. “Delivery is still really heavy, and the system is working great.” The pandemic has made some lasting changes to how Friendship Village handles certain aspects of dining, according to Teferi. Since residents enjoyed the increased carryout and room service options, elements of the more robust system will remain in place, and the community will no longer offer traditional buffets. “This past year of COVID-19 has taught the team to be more adaptable,” he says. “We came together under difficult circumstances, and it really made us stronger and better at what we do.”

The luxury community offers what it refers to as ‘freedom dining.’ “It’s just what it sounds like,” Hinrich notes. “Residents have the ability to choose from a wide variety of options.” The dining room serves three meals a day and features both an exhibition kitchen and fine dining area, which offers reservations. Along with standard meals, Creek Valley also provides room service; snack and beverage stations; a pizza and sandwich station open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and a chef ’s pantry, offering 24-hour, grab-and-go options. Hinrich notes that the community has a robust culinary team, featuring both executive and sous chefs, and food is prepared fresh daily. This makes it easy for Creek Valley to meet the unique needs and preferences of individual residents. “There’s a lot of flexibility, so we can offer a variety of meal selections, whether it’s based on palate or dietary needs,” she says. &

Seniors Embrace Spring & Summer by julia m. johnson ne of the most significant lessons highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic is the importance of human contact to our physical and mental health. Local retirement communities are coming up with ways to help senior citizens stay engaged as the pandemic continues, and they’re hopeful it soon will be safe for large gatherings to return. In the meantime, optimism is the word of the day, and seniors are benefiting from staff members’ efforts to keep their spirits high.

Christy Jenkins, wellness and activities director at Lutheran Senior Services’ Mason Pointe residence, says the community has gotten creative with socially distanced activities. Still, residents and staff hope gatherings will be possible again this spring and summer. Some of Mason Pointe’s different residence levels have begun reopening to visitors, and Jenkins says every effort is being made to welcome these all-important visits with precautions in place. Spring and summer plans include a homecoming celebration, Cardinals opening day party, and field trips to places like the Arch, Longmeadow Rescue Ranch and St. Louis Aquarium. At home, seniors enjoy live music, art programs, speakers, games and other fun activities. “As wellness director, I’ve been very concerned about our residents’ mental health over the past year,” Jenkins says. “We spend a lot of time talking with them about how they are feeling, and activities continue to be a key outlet for them.” According to Jenkins, Mason Pointe staff members have been resilient during the crisis and have passed that strength on to the residents through their positive attitudes. “Crisis brings about change, and sometimes it is frustrating, but many good things come out of it, too,” she notes. “Through events and socialization, we remind our residents to release what is negative and embrace what is valuable, like connections with family, friends and the community.”

Patricia Muich, marketing and advertising director at Delmar Gardens, says staff members at the company’s senior residences hope their popular July 4th picnics can return this year. Plans are still tentative, but Muich says the staff is prepared to bring the gatherings back in some form if conditions permit. The events, free and open to the public, include live music, games, rides, food, drinks and fireworks displays. They usually welcome a total of about 5,000 people each summer. “Last year was the first time in three decades that we were not able to hold our 4th of July celebrations,” Muich says. “Normally, they take place in the days leading up to July 4 at Delmar Gardens’ North, South, O’Fallon, Meramec Valley and Gardens on the Green facilities. If we are able to stage the parties this summer, they will be similar to past years but probably scaled back somewhat. Even if the fireworks are all we can manage, we still want to make our neighbors, residents and families happy while keeping them safe. People need to reconnect, especially after the events of the past year.” For updated information on activities at these senior communities, visit lssliving.org and delmargardens.com. &

STATE-OF-THE-ART SURGERY

LOOKING AHEAD

Dr. Sri Pinnamaneni, an orthopedic surgeon at Signature Orthopedics, is the first physician in St. Louis to use a new computer-guided total shoulder replacement system. ExactechGPS uses 3-D modeling software to allow surgeons to preoperatively plan replacement surgeries, and during the operation, the technology provides live feedback and assessment using trackers, specialized instruments and an inter-operative computer. The system allows for more precise and personalized surgeries, specially designed for patients’ unique anatomies. “I am honored to be the first surgeon to use and implement this technology in the St. Louis area,” Pinnamaneni says. “I look forward to providing this innovative, exciting technology to patients needing shoulder replacement surgery in the local community.”

Saint Louis University’s new Advanced HEAlth Data (AHEAD) Institute is partnering with SSM Health to help advance the quality of health care and improve patient outcomes. An important part of the initiative is the development of a virtual data warehouse (VDW) that holds de-identified patient data from more than 5 million individuals. The VDW is expected to be completed in April of next year, and its information will be available to researchers from both organizations who submit data requests and research proposals. Since all data collected will be obfuscated, they will not have access to information identifying specific patients or providers. The AHEAD Institute also is conducting research and projects on a variety of topics, including epidemiology, health disparities, COVID-19 surveillance and chronic prescription opioid use.

VIRUS CONTAINMENT

OPIOID OVERDOSES

Researchers at the Brown School at Washington University are helping advise local policymakers on how to contain the spread of COVID-19 until the vaccination is able to offer widespread protection. They have collaborated with the Brookings Center on Social Dynamics and Policy for TRACE (Testing Responses through Agent-based Computational Epidemiology), an effort to create a sophisticated model to inform policy responses to the pandemic. Previous simulations produced by the model have focused on national containment efforts, but now the aim is to limit the spread of the virus in St. Louis city through the summer. TRACE researchers conducted 50,000 simulations that represented 1,000 different combinations of containment options. They found existing control measures and vaccination are likely enough to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, but new virus variants could necessitate additional policies.

Opioid misuse continues to be a major issue in the United States, and an estimated 2.4 million Americans suffer from opioid use disorder. A common treatment is medication like buprenorphine, which activates opioid receptors. However, there is some debate about the safety of prescribing buprenorphine to patients who also take benzodiazepines, which are stress and anxiety medications like Valium and Xanax, because both drugs depress the central nervous system. Research from Washington University School of Medicine found that buprenorphine can protect from opioid overdose even for people who take benzodiazepines. Looking at more than 23,000 patients being treated for opioid abuse disorder who also had been prescribed anxiety medication, the study found that those who took buprenorphine had 40% less risk of an overdose.

Chew on This By Julia M. Johnson

t’s easy to think of dental care as separate from regular medical care, but a healthy mouth is just as integral to overall wellness as any other part of the body. In addition to regular brushing, flossing and preventive exams, here’s some helpful advice to sink your teeth into this spring.

Drink water!

Water is crucial for the proper functioning of your organs and tissues, but did you know it’s just as important to your teeth? It rinses away food residue that can lead to dental decay, but it also removes additives like phosphoric, citric and malic acids that erode tooth enamel. Staying hydrated also helps you produce enough saliva to prevent dry mouth, a condition that can lead to cavities.

Take care with these foods & drinks!

We all know sugary foods and beverages contribute to tooth decay, but here are some other things to limit in the interest of good dental health.

Ice. It’s just frozen water, right? True, but chewing it is not good for your teeth. Hard substances like ice can harm enamel and leave teeth open to further damage.

out your mouth. Coffee and tea can cause stains, too. If you drink them, be sure to consume plenty of water as well.

Sticky foods. Dried fruits

and trail mix can offer nutritional benefits, but they also leave a sticky residue that stays longer on your teeth and contributes to tooth decay. It’s a good idea to rinse with water or brush your teeth after eating them.

Crunchy snacks. Crispy

foods like potato chips can contain a lot of starch that gets trapped on tooth surfaces and leads to plaque buildup. Don’t forget to floss carefully to remove food particles.

Alcoholic beverages.

Drinking alcohol can dehydrate your body, leading to dry mouth and tooth decay.

Sports and energy drinks. They often contain a

lot of sugar, so read bottle labels carefully. Better yet, stick to water.

Citrus fruits and drinks. They can be important vitamin sources, but they also contain acids that erode enamel and make teeth more vulnerable to decay. Eat or drink them in limited quantities.

Coffee and tea. Many people add sugar to these drinks, and the caffeine they contain can dry

Avoid tobacco!

Using tobacco can stain your teeth and tongue, interfere with healing after dental surgery, and contribute to gum disease and oral cancer. Your dentist or doctor can provide information on resources to help you quit.

Did you know?

Cities have been adding fluoride, a mineral that strengthens tooth enamel, to their water supplies for decades with positive results. According to the American Dental Association, the Canadian city of Calgary stopped about 10 years ago, and research showed its children had more tooth decay than those in cities with fluoridated water. In areas where water is not treated, children can get fluoride in tablets, toothpaste and mouth rinses. SOURCE: AMERICAN ASSOCIATION F22 | TOWN &style DENTAL | MARCH 24, 2021

SMILE MORE KIRKWOOD STATION DENTAL

by stephanie wallace OUR SMILES PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE in how we connect with the world, and oral health

is crucial to how we present ourselves to others. A straighter, brighter smile can add a boost of self confidence, and the benefits often are much more than simply cosmetic. Kirkwood Station Dental offers a wide range of both cosmetic and general dentistry to meet the oral health care needs of individuals and families. Dr. Jasmine Esmailzadegan and Dr. Robert Thomure see both children and adults at the practice. The dentists’ partnership is one of the unique benefits that distinguishes Kirkwood Station Dental. Both have different areas of expertise, so they can offer comprehensive care. “Having that balance is really beneficial,” Esmailzadegan explains. “We can offer each other advice in different areas, and patients benefit from the best of both worlds.” She understands that people often feel apprehensive about dental care, especially if they had bad experiences in the past. She notes that patients often visit Kirkwood Station Dental for consultation before beginning any work. “Embarrassment or fear shouldn’t stop anyone from getting the necessary care,” she says. “Patients shouldn’t be afraid to ask questions to help ease any anxiety. Getting to know and work with people is part of the job that I love most.” Adding veneers is one common way to create a wider and brighter smile. While it is a popular procedure, Esmailzadegan notes that there are many misconceptions about the treatment. “People sometimes are worried that we have to drill the teeth into nubs, but placing veneers actually is minimally invasive,” she explains. “They are thin shells that bond to the surface of the tooth. They can help fix issues like chips, discoloration or cavities that are not aesthetically pleasing. The procedure requires careful attention to detail, and I work closely with patients to fully understand their wants and expectations.” Esmailzadegan also works with patients looking to straighten their teeth with Invisalign. The aligners not only can improve a smile’s appearance, but also fix issues with patients’ bites. “Recession of the gum, wear on the teeth and sensitivity all are symptoms of biting incorrectly,” she says. “Sometimes the benefit of aligners is wholly cosmetic, but in the majority of cases, there also is some improvement to how the teeth fit together.” She adds that she is not an orthodontist, so if the issue is more severe, she may refer patients to specialists, whether for Invisalign or traditional braces. Along with offering cosmetic procedures, Kirkwood Station Dental provides a wide range of general dentistry services. Esmailzadegan notes that oral health plays an important role in our overall wellness. “We often think of our mouth and teeth as separate from the rest of our body, but in reality, infections like gum disease can impact heart health and other things,” she says. “Through oral exams, we also can see symptoms of other diseases like diabetes or cancer. We take a comprehensive approach because everything is connected, and it’s important to look at the whole patient to understand what’s going on and why. We help patients STAY IN G BE AU TI FU L restore their confidence in a healthy, functional way.” & SPEC IAL SECT ION

Nightly Skin Care in 5 Steps BY MARYLYN SIMPSON

It’s never too late to start a nighttime skin care routine. As my 30s crept up and I came to the realization I didn’t want to rely solely on Botox to deal with my newly minted fine lines, a routine made itself blatantly necessary. While I admire those who tackle a 10-plus step process, I’ve found a simple routine that suits my sleepy, and at times impatient, pre-bed needs. Here are my easy five steps for women of all ages.

1. Wipe the Day Away My 20s were full of bad habits like sleeping with mascara and eyeliner on and waiting until the morning to assess the damage. Oh, to be young again. I’ve used a variety of high- and low-end eye makeup removers, and my go-to is Neutrogena’s Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover. Just a quick shake of the bottle and a dab on a cotton ball is all you need to remove the day’s eye makeup and avoid unnecessary stinging while washing your face. NEUTROGENA’S OIL- FREE EYE MAKEUP REMOVER, AMAZON.COM, $5 FOR 5.5 FL. OZ

2. Youthful Glow A thorough facial cleanse is the next step. While you should tailor your face wash to your skin’s needs, I personally love the Kate Somerville Goat Milk Moisturizing Cleanser. The creamy formula feels so good on my skin and removes the day’s makeup and dirt, leaving my skin glowing. Kate Somerville has a variety of face washes to suit a variety of skin care needs. KATE SOMERVILLE GOAT MILK MOISTURIZING CLEANSER, KATESOMERVILLE.COM, $40

3. Mask It! Now, your skin is feeling fresh and clean, but it’s not time to hit the hay yet. A good-quality mask can mean all the difference in your facial texture, especially if you have dry skin or your skin has a high cell turnover rate that leaves it feeling coarse or rough. Malin and Goetz Brightening Enzyme Mask is a chemical exfoliator (meaning you let it sit on your skin rather than rub it in) that leaves my skin looking visibly improved after a single wash. Thanks to ingredients like revitalizing ginger extract and bilberry, lemon and orange AHAs that brighten, smooth and moisturize, this mask definitely lives up to its name. MALIN AND GOETZ BRIGHTENING ENZYME MASK, MALINANDGOETZ.COM, $48

4. Super Serum In case you haven’t caught on already, I really like products that make me look young. So it should come as no surprise that I’m completely obsessed with Gaffer and Child’s Lunar Youth Serum. Not only does it smell amazing, but it also uses wild harvested herbs, is 100% natural and vegan, is certified organic and uses no harsh chemicals. The serum works while you sleep to replenish and nourish your skin back to its full potential and fight premature aging. Ingredients like sea buckthorn, rose and geranium make skin visibly smoother by morning. GAFFER AND CHILD LUNAR YOUTH SERUM, GAFFERANDCHILD.COM, $110

5. Multi-Tasking Toner To finish, I stick with another Gaffer and Child favorite: Neroli Magic Mist. It’s a facial tonic that tones and acts as an aromatherapy agent. It can be used whenever, but I can’t think of a better way to end the day than with a whiff of my favorite florals. It works for all skin types and can be used on both face and body. Plus, it even works as an aftershave! NEROLI MAGIC MIST, GAFFERANDCHILD.COM, $33

Bonus: And let’s not forget our friend, retinol. Talk to your dermatologist before getting on the retinol bandwagon, but this potent serum is proven to reduce fine lines and signs of aging and easily can be worked into your nighttime routine.

SUN PROTECTION TIPS Avoid the sun during peak hours. Generally, this is between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Apply sunscreen to dry skin 15 minutes before going outside. Regardless of how high the SPF is, reapply sunscreen every two hours or more frequently if you’re swimming or sweating. If you use a cosmetic product that includes sun protection like a BB or CC cream, it needs to be regularly reapplied as well. UV rays can pass through clouds, so use sunscreen even on cloudy days. Wear protective clothing like shirts with long sleeves, pants, sunglasses and hats. Be careful around water, snow and sand. They reflect sunlight and can increase the risk of sunburn. Use a lip balm or lipstick that contains SPF protection because skin cancer also can form on your lips.

Y!)

The weather is warming up each day, which means everyone is eager to get outside and enjoy it. But while sunshine boosts mood and allows for lots of fun outdoors, it contains harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, and exposure to them can prematurely age the skin (yikes!) and even lead to skin cancer (double yikes!). Make protecting your skin from sun exposure a priority.

HOW DOES SUNSCREEN WORK? There are two main ways sunscreen protects you from UV light. Chemical ones act like a sponge. They absorb the sun’s rays. They contain one or more of these active ingredients: oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate. These products tend to be easier to rub into the skin and don’t leave behind as much residue. Physical sunscreens act like a shield. They deflect sunlight off of you. These products contain zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or a combination of both. Since they sit on the surface of the skin, they leave more residue. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends physical sunscreens for people with sensitive skin. WHAT SPF DO YOU NEED? SPF stands for sun protection factor, and it measures how well your sunscreen stands up to UVB rays, which are responsible for burning the top layers of the dermis. Protection against UVA light isn’t rated, but if a product is labeled ‘broad spectrum,’ it has demonstrated it protects against both UVA and UVB exposure. The two types of UV light can cause skin cancer, so it’s important to choose a sunscreen that offers coverage against both. The SPF number is calculated by how long it takes treated skin to burn when compared to skin with no sunscreen applied. So if you use a product rated SPF 15, it will take 15 times more sun exposure to burn than if you weren’t wearing it. However, tests to determine SPF are conducted in laboratories under ideal circumstances. In practice, you likely are not as protected as the number on the bottle indicates because your sunscreen is going to wear off due to exposure to the elements. The FDA suggests using products with an SPF of at least 15, and the American Academy of Dermatology recommends using nothing less than SPF 30. HOW MUCH SUNSCREEN SHOULD I USE? According to the American Academy of Dermatology, most people only appy 25% to 50% of the recommended amount of sunscreen. You should use enough to cover any skin that isn’t clothed. For adults, that generally means 1 ounce, which is enough to fill a shot glass.

MARCH 24, 2021

IS THERE WATERPROOF SUNSCREEN? No product is completely waterproof; they all will eventually wash off. If a sunscreen is labeled ‘water resistant,’ that means it remains effective for 40 minutes when swimming or sweating, and if it’s ‘very water resistant,’ it works for 80 minutes in water. The bottle should include instructions on when to reapply. DOES IT MATTER IF I USE A CREAM, GEL OR SPRAY? That is up to personal preference. It may be important to note that current FDA regulations on testing and standardization do not apply to spray sunscreens, but it does continue to evaluate them for safety and effectiveness. DOES SUNSCREEN GET ABSORBED INTO YOUR BODY? Recent research from the FDA has shown that the active ingredients in sunscreen can be absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin. This can happen even after only a single application. The findings do not necessarily mean that the ingredients are unsafe, but additional data is necessary to fully determine whether there are long-term effects of absorption. SO, IS YOUR SUNSCREEN SAFE? The FDA has proposed a rule that classifies sunscreen ingredients as ‘generally recognized as safe and effective’ (GRASE). Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide already are proposed to be GRASE. The FDA also proposes that PABA and trolamine salicylate are not GRASE. However, neither of those are found in any sunscreens sold legally in the U.S. There are 12 ingredients that the FDA is asking for more information on before determining whether they can be classified as GRASE. Of those 12, seven are commonly used in sunscreens in the U.S.: ensulizole, octisalate, homosalate, octocrylene, octinoxate, oxybenzone, avobenzone. At this time, the FDA has not recommended that the public stop using products containing these ingredients.

You wouldn’t be surprised to find the home at 20 Upper Warson Road in the pages of a history book. Nestled in the heart of Ladue and known as the Westbury Estate, the property was designed with classic Georgian architecture and style in mind, and it features acres of lush gardens and grounds. Take a quick look around the 20,000-square-foot home, however, and you’ll realize you’re still very much in the 21st century. It features nearly every luxury amenity and modern convenience you can imagine. “While the design is rooted in history and was inspired by the iconic homes of the 18th and 19th centuries, it was constructed with contemporary living in mind,” agent Alex Thornhill says.

What are some benefits of the property’s location? It’s in central Ladue and close to all that the area has to offer, including country clubs, golf courses, and shops and restaurants downtown. It’s located on a cul-de-sac, and the property itself is gated. It has a very private feel with beautiful curb appeal. What are the noteworthy amenities? The home sits on 4.66 acres, and the amenities are abundant and rare to find all together at a property in our market. They include a home fitness center with a juice bar, spas and massage room; pool, pool house and hot tub; a tennis court and putting green; a home theater with stadium seating; a wine cellar and wet bar; a catering kitchen; 11 fireplaces; a six-car garage; and an elevator.

It’s perfect for hosting both small and large groups. There is connectivity and flow between the indoor and outdoor spaces, which allows people to move easily throughout the property.

Are there any standout features? The glass conservatory is of particular note. It’s a Parish Conservatory. The company dates back to the Victorian era. Everything was Tell me about the construction. T&S HOME

BY STEPHANIE WALLACE PHOTOS BY SUZY GORMAN

To say that Susan Barrett knows a thing or two about art would be an understatement. As president of Barrett Barrera Projects, she and her team operate three gallery spaces: projects+gallery, projects+exhibitions and its headquarters. They also channeled their creative energy into the company’s guest house, an innovative and playful space for artists to stay when they visit the StL. Here, Barrett provides a peek at its whimsical design paired with impactful uses of contemporary art. MARCH 24, 2021 | townandstyle.com

| F31

When did you create the guest house? We opened it in October of 2019. The idea was to create a space for artists and other visitors who often have to stay in town for an extended period because they are putting up shows or collaborating with others. The house also is a place to celebrate, and we host dinners for openings and other events there. We used it extensively until COVID hit last spring. It doesn’t feel like it’s quite been broken in yet. What are the benefits of having it in the CWE? It’s a great way for guests to be close to the galleries, and the CWE has always been a historic area for art, especially McPherson Avenue. I’ve always loved the neighborhood. It’s a wonderful place for finding new ideas, art and innovation. What do you know about the property’s history? It was built around 1910, and originally, it was constructed to be both a house and storefront, which was very common at the time. The business was on the bottom, and the residence was on the top floors. The property already was divided into a public and a private space, so it was perfect for what we wanted to use it for. We wanted a more communal area to host lectures and dinners after gallery openings, but we also wanted to have a private place for our artists to stay uninterrupted. Did you have to make any renovations? The previous owners left the house in amazing shape, so we didn’t have to do anything major. It had been beautifully rebuilt. We did repaint or add new de Gournay wall coverings to almost every surface. It gave the house a much more playful energy. How did you approach the design? We actually had very little time between closing on the property and when we were planning for our first guest. Ann Ray was coming from Paris for her exhibit "Rendez-Vous" at the projects+exhibitions space, and we really wanted to be able to host her, have dinner and celebrate here. We had six weeks to complete everything,

so I called my friend James Jamieson, who is an amazing interior designer. The idea was to have something joyful. We wanted the space to make guests feel invigorated. We mixed antique furniture with contemporary art and played with a lot of color. What about placing the art? It was a great opportunity to show how art can be lived with. Having a piece as part of a home is so different from seeing it in a blank, white gallery. It gave us permission to be irreverent with art and how it’s placed. You should live with it as you do everything else you love. Art doesn’t require a special design; it can fit in and look beautiful in many different contexts. Are there any standout pieces on display? When you walk in, there’s a big wow factor. The space is large with multiple chandeliers, very beautiful wall coverings, and more antique or period pieces. We’ve juxtaposed that with contemporary art. We have a very large painting by Kehinde Wiley, which was actually part of his exhibit at the Saint Louis Art Museum. We thought it was important to include something that featured St. Louisans and was made specially for the city. Do you have a favorite space? There are a few. When we designed the space, we tried to figure out how to accommodate as many people as possible in case artists brought their families or entourages. We never know how many people we’ll be hosting, and more importantly, we want our guests to feel comfortable and taken care of. There’s a bedroom with three beds. It’s cozy and makes you feel like you’re on an old-fashioned train. Whenever I bring friends to the guest house, the first question they ask is when we’re going to have a sleepover. I also like the bar. With the gold barstools and glistening copper and how the lit display cabinets show off the liquor bottles, you feel like you’re in a bejeweled room. It’s a fun, speakeasy-type space.
