Our front porch gets a lot of boxes delivered to it. Much to my husband’s dismay, it’s often easier for me to shop online and have things shipped. I am a full-time working mom of three active kids with a husband who travels. Enough said. (Important note: My favorite local shops get plenty of my support as well.) I don’t know why, but I feel the need to justify my steady stream of boxes. Except for certain times of the year, like the start of a new season. Hello, spring! Because then, new clothes and shoes are just as much a necessity as a pleasure. When we were packing for our spring break trip, my daughter and I quickly realized she only had two short-sleeve tops that fit her from last year. Sandals? Well, she tried to make her foot fit into last year’s Birkenstocks, but it clearly wasn’t happening. So one night the week before takeoff, she and I sat down at the kitchen counter and shopped. Hard. Not wanting to be left out, my son got in on the action, too. And there is no hope for me when it comes to our 5-month-old. Everything is cuter when it’s in miniature. Needless to say, spring fashion fever has hit me … and I’ve only just touched on my closet. I now have some great ideas thanks to this issue’s fashion spread, Spring Forecast, which features items that can be found right here in St. Louis, no shipping required. If you’re headed to West County Center, check out its latest charitable endeavor in our flip cover story and see if you can help! I hope you embrace spring in countless areas, not just your wardrobe. Tips on how to incorporate the season’s colors into your home are featured in Refresh & Redo, and our health feature highlights treatments that are perfect to do right now to get your skin glowing. It’s nice to feel the warmth. And I hear delivery drivers prefer sunshine to snow.

WEST COUNTY CENTER by julia m. johnson

IF YOU STUDIED MUSIC IN SCHOOL, chances are there is an old guitar, violin or trumpet in the back of your closet, a forgotten, dust-covered relic of youth. But even if you haven’t picked up the instrument in years, it still can do an amazing amount of good, says Sean Phillips, marketing director at West County Center in Des Peres. For the second year, the shopping center is partnering with the local nonprofit Play It Forward to collect used instruments for students who can’t afford them. St. Louisans can donate playable instruments at two dropoff points in the mall through April 7. They will be cleaned, serviced and distributed to local schools—some of which have suffered serious music budget cuts in recent years, Phillips says. “West County Center supports a different charitable cause each month, and this one works well for spring because March is National Music in Our Schools Month,” he notes. “Last year, we collected nearly 60 good instruments for Play It Forward, and we were beyond ecstatic about the response. We actually received one of nearly every type, including things like a saxophone, clarinet, flute, drums, keyboard, and even a full-size orchestra xylophone. This year, we want to meet or exceed last year’s success.” Samantha St. Raymond, president of Play It Forward, says the impact these instruments have on children’s lives is remarkable. “We work often with kids in foster care and social services, and they really benefit from the healing power of music,” she explains. “We know it positively affects the brain in terms of learning and comprehension, and it can help them rebound from traumatic experiences. Several years ago, there was a little girl who had suffered sexual abuse and was living in a safe house. She asked for a violin, and we set up lessons for her. Years later, we found out she was still playing; that’s a major success for us.” Play It Forward has some other important plans in the works, too. One of its students, 16-yearold Tanay Chandak, created tracking software for the organization’s donated instruments. It soon will be used for a new program, The Players Club, which allows businesses and individuals to get involved in students’ musical journeys by sponsoring their monthly band instrument rental fees. St. Raymond says the nonprofit welcomes support in other forms, too, whether it’s a monetary donation or simply sharing any music student’s successes on social media. For students, having their own instruments is crucial to mastery because they can practice at home as well as at school. “Donated instruments have made it possible for some of our students to get college music scholarships,” St. Raymond explains. “Everybody starts somewhere, including our favorite performers and stars. Music is a connection that everyone shares.” & MARCH 27, 2019

PARENT TRAP MY RULING ON JUULING by dr. tim jordan THE TOBACCO COMPANIES ARE AT IT AGAIN, making e-cigarette products like the Juul appeal to teenagers as a way to create a new generation of smokers. By the end of 2017, Juuling accounted for nearly half of the market share for e-cigarettes. Teenagers tell me that at least 75 percent of kids at their schools use Juuls, and most adults have no knowledge of what it is. Juuls resemble thumb drives, making them easy to hide. They produce minimal vapor and come in eight flavors, including crème brûlée and mango. One pod contains about 5 percent nicotine, or about 200 puffs, which is roughly equivalent to a pack of cigarettes. A starter kit can be bought for around $50 and the pods for around $5, and teens say they are readily available. So what’s the draw? Teens tell me they like the ‘buzz’ they get with a hit, like a head rush that lasts a few minutes. But if they smoke a lot, it requires more to elicit this buzz. It has become the cool new thing for teens, and the ability to sneak it right under the noses of parents and teachers makes it even more enticing. Girls hide it under their bra strap and can take quick hits right in the classroom or in the bathroom at school. The flavors are also part of the appeal. Adolescents see it as a new way to connect, and since it gives the impression of being ‘safe,’ it’s easier to ignore the negative effects. The teenage brain is susceptible to addictions because the baseline levels of dopamine are lower than adults’, making them more easily bored and requiring more stimulation to get excited. The release of dopamine in response to stimulating experiences is higher than adults’, causing adolescents to gravitate toward thrills and risky behaviors, producing increased impulsivity and vulnerability to addictions. Plus, adolescents progress faster to nicotine dependence than adults and find nicotine more rewarding. Teens underestimate the risks of smoking and are more influenced by smoking behavior in their social milieu. Talk to your teenager about e-cigarettes and in particular Juuls. Teen e-cigarette users are four to six times more likely to start smoking cigarettes. In a recent study, 66 percent of teens surveyed thought that Juuls contained only flavoring, not nicotine. Listen to what they say about their experiences and their friends’ experiences, and be sure they are educated about the long-term negative effects of nicotine. Use Juuls as a gateway to talk about fitting in, being true to yourself and making good decisions. Juul recently announced it would stop selling flavored pods at more than 90,000 retail stores, but we surely can’t rely on e-cigarette companies to curb this new fad. When it comes to things like vaping, what teens need most is understanding, education and empathy (remember your own behaviors and temptations as a teenager). & TIM JORDAN, M.D., IS A BEHAVIORAL PEDIATRICIAN WHO WORKS WITH GIRLS IN GRADE SCHOOL THROUGH COLLEGE IN HIS COUNSELING PRACTICE AND CAMPS. PATTY by patty hannum GOOD NEWS! My daughter is graduating from college

on time, and she has a job! Bad news: She is making her parents look really bad. It took her dad five years to graduate and her mom an entire year to find a ‘real job.’ Now, I’ve always justified my situation by saying that I entered the job market during a horrible recession, and I was not great at interviewing (think flop sweat). Since my husband does not write this column, you can think what you want as to why it took him five years to graduate. Everything worked out just as it should for us, but I swore then that if I ever knew of anyone who needed help with a career search, I would step in. And, my fellow readers, this is where I recruit you to do the same!

◀ The SAINT LOUIS ART MUSEUM IS NOW THE PERMANENT HOME OF CHARLES I, A KEHINDE WILEY PAINTING that was part of the artist’s recent exhibit here. The portrait, formally purchased by the museum, was inspired by a 17th-century painting of England’s King Charles I by Daniel Martensz Mytens the Elder. Wiley’s official rendering of President Barack Obama is on display at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.

Parents, it is time to use your friends. This is the one issue that seems to be a bit controversial. I get asked to have coffee by people who read my column and think I am a writer. I am a fake writer. I spent my career in the financial services industry. So as they try to hide their disappointment that I can’t help them land a career as a writer, I start asking them about their families. Inevitably, they rattle off a few people their parents know who are in their desired industry. I ask them if they have contacted these very ‘warm’ leads, and they often say their parents are concerned it would be awkward. I then ask if their parents would invite those friends over for dinner or ask them for Cardinals tickets. You know where this is going. Parents, help your kids. It is a simple phone call. Or even a text. “Can Mike call you about his job search?” Unless the person is horrible (and then you should drop him as a friend), the answer is always yes. Encourage your kids to go to networking events. These are usually awful. The chit-chat is stilted, but there are hidden gems to be found, like people who aren’t helpful now but will be in a few years. And there always will be the shared experience of eating celery and drinking bad wine together. Most people rely on the Internet to find a job, but the better positions require a personal connection. So here is my plea: If someone needs a helping hand, just do it!

If they ask, meet them for coffee. I know, I know, you are a very important person who barely has time to get your hair cut, but just do it. I cannot tell you how many people I’ve asked to meet with a niece, nephew, son or daughter. I have never been turned down. (To be clear, no blackmail was used.) Perhaps these kids simply drop by your office for a quick meeting after they contact you. Maybe all that comes of the meeting is a suggestion about their résumé, a tip about a firm that is hiring or a ‘hang in there.’ But those 30 minutes you take keep them moving forward. And every once in awhile, you might find one you want to hire. Oh, and no one can beat me at the ‘I am too busy’ game. During my days of self-importance, I had two kids at two different schools, worked full-time managing I don’t remember how many people, traveled extensively, had no household help, slept five hours a night and still managed to find time to meet with anyone who asked me. (I also was really mean, yelled a lot, broke a few phones and had a bad case of road rage.)

FOCUS ON SERVICE STANGE LAW FIRM by stephanie wallace

DIRECTOR OF ADMINISTRATION REBECCA TERRY

WHEN CHOOSING A LAW FIRM , you’re selecting more than just an attorney to

represent you. From paralegals to office managers, there is an entire team working to protect your interests and meet your unique needs. At Stange Law Firm, every employee is dedicated to serving clients, according to director of administration Rebecca Terry. She has worked with the firm since shortly after it was created by founding partners Kirk Stange and Paola Arzu Stange. Terry started as a paralegal in 2008 and now assists with administrative management of the firm’s 19 offices. “I’ve been married to this company longer than I have my husband,” Terry jokes. She recalls that when she started with Stange, it operated out of a small space in Brentwood. “There were three offices and a lobby area, and the conference room was a table in Mr. Stange’s office,” she says. “It was a big difference from where we are today. We now have offices across Missouri, Illinois and Kansas, and our headquarters is in Clayton right across from the courthouse.” Before starting with Stange, Terry had no experience with family law, but she quickly learned how rewarding it is to help clients through divorce, child custody issues and other complicated challenges. “Some days are harder than others, and it is heartbreaking to hear stories of parents who just want to spend time with their

children,” she says. “But when our attorneys return from court and share how we helped someone get more visitation, it makes those days worth it.” After working as a paralegal for a few years, Terry took on new responsibilities with the firm, and she began performing more administrative tasks to keep the expanding company operating smoothly. “My job description changed as more employees came on and more offices opened,” she says. Eventually, she transitioned into her current position, director of administration. “My desk has paper on it all the time,” she says. “Files do not get opened or closed here without first passing through my office.” A graduate of the University of Illinois at Springfield, Terry had a bachelor’s degree in legal studies and political science when she joined the firm, and while working at Stange, she earned her master’s in legal studies from the same university. She has spoken at continuing education seminars for organizations like the Institute for Paralegal Education, MyLawCLE and the National Business Institute. “The firm continues to grow, and I’m glad to be a part of it,” Terry says. “After seeing the Stanges’ vision in action, I remember telling my mother that it felt like I was getting in on the ground floor of a great organization. I was right, and it’s been a pleasure to work here for the last 11 years. I can’t wait to see where we go next.” &

TALK OF THENotable TOWNS B NEIGH

by bill beggs jr.

ST. CHARLES 〉〉

Looks like retail alternatives to the huge shopping mall with four anchor department stores are continuing to do just fine here, thank you. (I don’t mean the Internet, although it’s everywhere and maybe the last place you bought underwear.) As old-school malls struggle, mixed-use developments such as The Streets of St. Charles are burgeoning. Meanwhile, competing open-air outlet malls in Chesterfield Valley seem to be achieving metamorphosis, one as an outdoor shopping center, the other as an entertainment destination. The Streets—one named Lombard (San Francisco), another Beale (Memphis)—recently attracted a drinkery and a few unique retailers. A medical device company with 100-some employees will occupy a 40,000-square-foot office space upstairs from street-level retail. You could think of it as The Boulevard West; the Richmond Heights development across from the Galleria is readying Phase II. This is good news, at least for anyone who’s tired of the pushy people who try to spray new fragrances on you every time you walk into Dillard’s or Macy’s.

CREVE COEUR 〉〉

The oft-clever MoDOT sign on North Lindbergh across from Chaminade High School usually reads something like “Click It, Or Ticket.” Reminders to buckle up are always useful, unless you happen to be stupid. The CDC says seatbelts reduce serious crash-related injuries and deaths by about half. They’re de rigueur for most folks. Phrases in the news like ‘thrown from the car’ are warning enough. Besides, unless your ride is an antique, a sensor detects when the belt has been neglected. After a while, a series of beeps sounds. The six beeps, but who’s counting, are especially annoying when someone is just driving around the block in search of a better parking space. (OK, OK; I’m buckled up, already!) In excruciating summer heat, MoDOT signs have warned us not to leave pets in locked cars with the windows up. Or they say, “That’s the Temperature, Not the Speed Limit.” Motorists can submit phrases and slogans, some of them clever as all get-out. One from another state: “Bob Wears Orange. Don’t Hit Bob. We Need Him.” Cell phone use while driving is one of MoDOT’s pet peeves, which is why you’ll see messages like “Get Your Head Out of Your Apps.” In any case, you only have a split second to glance at the signs and understand them. But last week, at least on Monday and Tuesday, one message was inscrutable: “Buckle-ology. Pick Safely to Win.” Huh? Win what, and from whom? Turning around and driving past the sign a second time was no help. An online search yielded only one slightly relevant result, a video from an Australian company on how to use your wireless BuckleMeUp system, which assures you the kids are all secure. Anyhow, dear reader, can you help us out here? Anyone have a clue what the heck Buckle-ology is?

GRAND CENTER 〉〉

There are chamber music concerts on April Fools’ Day and the day after, so mark your calendars and sympathize with your watches: Carnegie Hall, next Monday and Tuesday nights at 7:30. Did we just say Carnegie Hall? Our bad. That’s in NYC. We meant The Sheldon. That’s in our world-renowned Grand Center Arts District. Right here in the StL, around the corner from The Fox. No fooling. Chamber musicians, reportedly, never pass up an opportunity to have fun. Who knew? But probably no one will get a pie in the face, and although we can’t promise anything, they say they’ll ‘try not to get too rowdy.’ Foolproof, the program to be held both nights, includes: Dudley Moore’s Beethoven parody—And the Same to You Haydn—String Quartet No. 2, Opus 33, The Joke Heidrich—Happy Birthday Variations Mozart—A Musical Joke, K. 522 Stravinsky—Circus Polka: For a Young Elephant A serious Russian composer mixing a polka with a young circus elephant? (What? Oh. They said polka, not vodka.) They can’t be serious. Which, of course, is the point. While you scratch your head and rub

your ears, test a couple of these compositions on YouTube. The late Arthur actor’s piece is hysterical; in the solo piano piece from Beyond the Fringe, he mixes Beethoven’s Fifth (at the very least) with The Colonel Bogey March. (Roll over Beethoven? Why would Ludwig have cared, being deaf and all?) Anyhow, visit chambermusicstl.org/concerts. Pictured, at left front: Dudley Moore

THE METRO 〉〉

What was it that Aunt Edna used to say? “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” That was usually aimed at your mother when she was trying to ‘improve’ the clan’s ancient recipe for vegetable soup. The phrase above could be the name of Better Together’s adversary group. Or: Get Over Yourselves. Maybe: Just Leave Us the Hell Alone. That’s essentially what leaders of, and citizens in, various county municipalities are saying to the juggernaut behind Better Together, the plan to remarry the city and county after their divorce more than 100 years ago. But those were both wordy, not to mention too clever by half. So, it’s Cities Strong. Gerry Welch, mayor of Webster Groves, is the group’s vice president; she’s a past president of the St. Louis County Municipal League. A former Crestwood mayor has reemerged. Sunset Hills and Rock Hill are in the mix … and we haven’t the space to mention all the cities and towns that are armed with petitions designed to stand against Better Together’s wishes for a statewide ballot issue in 2020. There are, like, more than 85. Watch this space. TT TRIVIA | SINCE WHEN HAS THIS WONDERFUL PUBLICATION— THE VERY ONE YOU’RE HOLDING IN YOUR HANDS OR VIEWING ONLINE—BEEN PUBLISHED? TOWN TALK

U. CITY 〉〉

Burroughs junior and political junkie Gabe Fleisher has had Potomac River water flowing through his veins since he attended President Obama’s first inaugural address. He was in D.C. on that historic day in 2009—sitting atop his father Randy’s shoulders, we assume, because he was only 7, and the crowd was ‘bigly.’ Gabe, now 17, will be on spring break until April 1. So will his newsletter, Wake Up to Politics, which he routinely emails to more than 50,000 subscribers every Monday through Friday … waking up at 5:55 a.m. to write and file it before he leaves his home in U. City to go to school. (“I don’t need a lot of sleep,” he told The New York Times in May 2017, “and I type really fast.”) But he went on break with a bang, posing a few questions to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) when she was in The Lou on March 18. From Gabe’s newsletter: “Pelosi knocked down criticism by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) that the Democratic voting rights push was a power grab by the party. ‘The reason I’m hopeful that we’ll be able to pass this is the public sentiment …’” She detailed her plan to marshal public opinion to pressure McConnell to hold votes on the legislation. “I’m starting a new club called the Too Hot to Handle Club,” she joked. “If they’re not going to pass it, tell us why.” Gabe has been filing an objective summation of the previous day’s news almost as long as T&S has been in print; The Daily Rundown started in April 2011. Gabe not only has subscribers here, there and everywhere (including his very first: Amy, his mom) … he also has 23,000 Twitter followers (but may take weekends off, unlike the president, who aired his grievances over St. Paddy’s weekend with at least 50 posts). Apparently, though—unlike your faithful scribe— Gabe is committedly nonpartisan. He eschews cable TV news; he posits that, no matter which network you’re watching, you’re subject to a left- or right-leaning bias. But he couldn’t help but attract the attention of MSNBC anchors Katy Tur and Steve Kornacki, MSNBC president Phil Griffin, CNN political director David Chalian and Major Garrett at CBS News, all subscribers. And, he’s been featured on Samantha Bee’s snarky political comedy show, Full Frontal. Bee’s (pretend) reporter, comedian Ashley Nicole Black, tried to get him to acknowledge her beauty. (Was that a Catch-22, or what?) He also has the attention of countless movers and shakers in print and online media, from Axios/Politico co-founder Jim VandeHei, BuzzFeed News editor-in-chief Ben Smith, Washington Post CEO Fred Ryan and chief correspondent Dan Balz. Not long before Gabe’s birthday, when he was on the east coast checking out colleges last fall, Ryan gave the young journalist a newsroom tour. The Times interviewed Gabe at WUPT world headquarters … his bedroom, chock full of political memorabilia, the shelves brimming over with books, from First Lady Barbara Bush’s memoir to Tur’s account of the tumultuous 2016 campaign. (Gabe turned 15 the day Trump triumphed. Coincidentally, of course.) When we chatted, one of his reads was presidential historian Jon Meacham’s book about President Jimmy Carter. Gabe’s future plans? “I can’t say what will happen tomorrow,” he says, but acknowledges he’d love to stay in journalism. We think he’s off to a fantastic start … but don’t just take our word. REACHING OUT

GITANA:

to provide global healing in the St. Louis community through music, dance and drama

by stephanie wallace

MEET FOUNDER AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CECILIA NADAL OF ST. LOUIS 〉〉 How long have you been working for this cause? Gitana was created in 1997, but my entire career has been dedicated to cross-cultural engagement. What got you interested in it? There are a number of things. One is my own family. My father is from Puerto Rico, and my mother is from north St. Louis, so my cultural identity is in both the Latino and African-American communities. My father was in the Air Force, and growing up, I lived in 11 states and four countries. I became sensitive to the fact that people live in isolated pockets instead of coming together to interact. The idea for Gitana came when I met native St. Louisan Danny Clark, a former member of the Alvin Ailey Dance Troupe. We agreed that the city needed something in the arts that transcended race identity and brought people together. I felt it made a lot of sense to use multiple disciplines to unite different groups. My background is in sociology, so I approached it as a way to help people improve the community. Explain what the organization does. Gitana uses multiple art forms as vehicles to unite the community. We create theater that deals with humanitarian issues that are important to people living in St. Louis. Our most recent theatrical production was New World, which is based on interviews with female refugees living in the city. We wanted people to know what these women were thinking and feeling to better understand their experiences. We also use music to share our message. Recently, we hosted a program that focused on the connection between African and Latino music, and in the past, we brought the McPeakes, a famous musical family from Belfast, Northern Ireland, to St. Louis and shared stories about the relationship between African-Americans and the Irish. These events involve a lot of community outreach that is education-oriented. We also have the Global Education Through the Arts program in South City at the Carpenter library branch. It was developed to teach young people to engage cross-culturally because I was hearing stories about a lot of conflict between different groups in the area. We use music and dance as a base to reach tolerance and acceptance, but the curriculum is not limited to fine arts. It includes cultural diversity training, which I teach myself. What do you want most for the organization? I wish people would recognize that growth in St. Louis depends on our being able to effectively help diverse groups and appreciate our commonalities and differences. We just held an event called Face of Love: Symposium on the Common History of Germans and African-Americans. We had experts in both German and African-American history share how the Germans of Missouri were primarily responsible for the abolition of slavery in the state. That’s something many people don’t know. It’s important that we go deeper to understand our similarities and have greater empathy. It’s critical that we start bringing people together in earnest.

&

IN THE WORDS OF GITANA:

“Cecilia is such a believer in using performance to bring different cultures together and create an opportunity for dialogue. What’s really exciting is that she doesn’t just do it for adults through concerts and theater, but she helps kids as well. She understands the importance of the next generation joining together to create a better world.”

He earned a law degree and an MBA, started a legal practice and built on his success as an athlete and trainer—and he even has a Guinness World Record! Now, Scott can add finalist on NBC’s The Titan Games to his list of accomplishments. The Lindbergh High School and Lindenwood University alum wasn’t the ultimate victor in the endurancebased physical competition, but he says it was an amazing experience nonetheless. Hosted by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, the series premiered in January with 64 contestants and crowned its first male and female champions at the end of February. Scott, who now lives in L.A., says he battled through a number of physically demanding obstacle courses and challenges to reach the final eight. “You recognize that pressure, anxiety and fear are the same as excitement and exhilaration, and you reframe your emotions in a positive way so you can get into the zone,” he explains.

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN THE TITAN GAMES? I had tried out for other shows like American Ninja Warrior in the past, and that’s how the producers knew about me. I was excited when they called and asked if I’d be interested in this new series. When I heard The Rock was hosting, I said, “I’m in.” I dedicated my performance to my older brother Ian, who passed away when we were kids. He’s a big reason why I do this sort of thing; I try to be a big brother to other people in his honor. HOW DID YOU GET READY FOR IT? I train regularly, so the physical requirements were already in place before I entered the competition. My family pushed me to excel athletically from a young age, so that’s another reason it was relatively easy for me. I’m not super huge, about 5-foot-9, but I’ve been competing at a national level in gymnastics and martial arts for years. In the martial arts community, we strive to be ‘ready at every second,’ and I’ve had the full support of my family behind me as well. So I felt very confident going in. WHAT WAS THE COMPETITION LIKE? I heard that I was considered an underdog because of my height, which surprised me. I’ve never felt like that in anything I’ve done! Learning other people’s perceptions of me as the games unfolded was interesting, to say the least. I embraced it, though, and did really well. I had so many people sending me messages of encouragement that it was kind of surreal. Being in the arena is like standing in the Roman Colosseum, only they’ve added lots of lights, cameras and pyrotechnics. Each segment lasts just a couple of minutes on TV, but it takes much longer to film.

BALLWIN | DES PERES | KIRKWOOD | UCITY

WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH THE ROCK? He is a great motivator. During the competition, he’s standing there next to you saying, “Let’s go, you can do more,” so you know you can make it happen. After filming, he sometimes would invite us to go for drinks or dinner on him. He is a really cool, genuine person, just like his on-screen characters. WHAT IS YOUR GUINNESS WORLD RECORD? My brothers Zeke, Shaun and I performed the most Swiss ball backflips between two people in one minute (37 flips) and in 30 seconds (25 flips). You jump onto the ball, do a backflip and the other person jumps and catches it. WHY DO YOU ENJOY COMPETING? For me, competition always has been very zen. I’m always mindful of my health, nutrition and what is going on around me. The hard work and mental preparation are already in the bank, so when I’m competing, I can focus on enjoying the experience. During The Titan Games, I watched videos of myself and felt like I could almost see my own thought processes! Waiting for one challenge to begin, I psyched myself up by dancing while the crowd cheered, and it was an amazing moment. The best part of the experience was the friendships I made with other competitors. It’s amazing how supportive everyone was and how close we became. When you celebrate the victories of others, you get to do a lot more winning yourself. & MARCH 27, 2019

GROUP EFFORT

WEST COUNTY CENTER by julia m. johnson EACH CHANGE IN SEASON BRINGS NEW TRENDS, colors and collaborations in the fashion world, and stores at West County Center in Des Peres are right in the mix. Kindred, a new boutique collective that opened in the shopping center late last year, is planning a spring full of bright, fashionable styles. The store offers clothing and accessories from several local sellers in one large, inviting space. Kindred at West County Center is one of two such collectives; the other is in Overland Park, Kansas. Sean Phillips, marketing director for the mall, says the stores were launched as a way to help small retailers pool their resources, enjoy better exposure and increase foot traffic. Local merchants currently represented in the West County space are Addi & Ains, Adorn, Ashley Jayne, Brooke and Sloan, JuJu B’s, Knitted Belle, Parker & Co. Boutique, Rustic Twine, and Solayne Designs. “Often, a boutique owner looks at the local mall and says, ‘I can’t afford to rent or staff a space there,’” Phillips notes. “These are major considerations for small retailers, and it really can limit their customer base. At Kindred, we’ve made it possible for these entrepreneurs to share a brand identity and have a strong presence in a hightraffic area. It’s a beautiful space in a great location on level one near major retailers like Nordstrom and Gap. We love working with both national and local retailers, and we think this is a great way to bring them together.” Phillips says putting several merchants under one umbrella encourages consumer bonding with a trusted brand, and that’s good for business. At Kindred, the diverse lines of clothing and accessories are arranged by current trends and local ‘flavors.’

ST. LOUIS-INSPIRED FASHIONS ARE AVAILABLE AT KINDRED.

There are shirts and hats that spotlight St. Louis, and plenty of home decor and gift items as well. Adam Pfeifer, founder and owner of Kindred, says the collective’s spring apparel lines promise to be vibrant and fresh. “We will have lots of leopard and snake patterns, floral prints, stripes and color blocking,” he notes. “Lavender, coral, hot pink, blue and neutrals will be the top colors.” Rompers, long skirts, midi-dresses and denim jackets will be on the racks, as well as distressed looks and throwback styles like crop tops and bodysuits. Ashley Jayne boutique co-owner Lauren Rizzo says hair accessories are another focus of the spring lineup. “Statement hair clips, barrettes, pins and hair scarves perfectly complement the season’s looks,” she says. “With new, diverse styles coming in each week, you can find pieces that really speak to you.” Phillips says Kindred already is proving to be a winning concept for merchants and consumers alike. Participating boutiques are expanding their reach, shoppers have more exciting options, and the benefits are tangible for all, he notes. “Working with retailers who understand the importance of local business has always been important to us,” he says. “West County Center isn’t just a mall, it’s a destination, and we enjoy making it possible for everyone to be successful here.” &

ANTHONY’S FIRESIDE PICKS

by anthony geary It’s finally spring, and not a moment too soon. With this new season comes the start of another one as well: camping season! Whether this means escaping city life for a few days, going on a scenic summer vacation or attending a music festival, pitching a tent presents us with the perfect opportunity to try some new flavors around the campfire. Here are my picks for drinks to bring on your next adventure. WHISKEY

Whiskey is an obvious choice for camping. It works great in a flask, is good enough to drink on its own, mixes well with sodas and even can be helpful for cleaning wounds. There is also something magical about passing a bottle around the campfire with your friends. For camping trips, I like whiskey with a little more power. Skip the Canadian and Irish whiskeys, which can be lighter in style, and go for American whiskeys or bourbon. Knob Creek does a killer rye whiskey that will wrap around you like a warm blanket. If you want to be really festive, try High West’s Campfire Whiskey. It has a great smokey aftertaste.

▶ High West Campfire Whiskey $67.99

▶ Five Farms Irish Cream $29.99

▶ Corzo Silver Tequila $50.99

IRISH CREAM

This choice might sound a little strange, but most campsites have coffee, right? Boiled coffee leaves much to be desired in terms of taste. Milk spoils easily and uses valuable cooler space, so you can either muscle through the taste or bring some Irish cream and live it up in the morning! Its lower alcohol percentage won’t cause you any trouble. Bailey’s is a good go-to, but check out Five Farms Single Batch Irish Cream Liqueur, too. This boutiquestyle Irish cream is crafted from fresh cream sourced entirely from five family farms in County Cork, Ireland. Once you taste it, you surely will make space for it in your backpack.

BEER

TEQUILA

Like whiskey, tequila is a liquor you can drink straight. My advice is spend a few extra dollars and make sure it's 100 percent agave. If not, you're probably drinking tequila-flavored vodka, which can make for a nasty hangover—not something you want on your drive back home. Silver, añejo and reposado tequilas are all great options. Brands like Patron and Don Julio are fine, but if you want to try something special, go for Tequila Ocho or Corzo Tequila.

ANTHONY GEARY IS SOMMELIER AT THE FOUR SEASONS HOTEL ST. LOUIS.

No camping trip would be complete without beer, and what kind to bring is a personal and often nostalgic decision. If your dad brought Coors when you camped together, chances are you might do the same. Bring beer that fits the weather. If there are chilly nights in the forecast, brown ales or stouts are appropriate. Civil Life Brown Ale is a great local beer. If the weather is super hot, bring light beer. Personally, I enjoy Mexican beer with limes. Tecate is a great choice. Light Mexican beer has a lower alcohol content, which won’t sneak up on you under the hot sun. Don’t pack glass bottles; many sites don’t allow them.

NEW ZEALAND / AUSTRALIAN WINE

One really annoying thing on a camping trip is having a bottle of wine but no corkscrew. Most New Zealand and Australian wines come with a screw cap called a Stelvin closure. To dispel the myth, screw caps don’t mean lesser quality. They’re great for convenience, but they also ensure that the wine won’t be ‘corked’ or faulted. If you want white wine, go for a New Zealand sauvignon blanc. Any bottle more than $15 will do, and it’s one of those wines you can drink right out of the bottle. For reds, I would go for an Australian grenache or shiraz/syrah, which are big enough to stand up to campfire cooking. Check out Kilikanoon for grenache and Elderton for shiraz.

by Dorothy Weiner t doesn’t get any more cosmopolitan than London. Parliament, Buckingham Palace, bobbies on horseback, double-decker buses, doormen in tails and top hats—it’s a city in motion at all times of the day and night. That means for every site you tour, there will be a half dozen you have to miss—this time, anyway. With that mindset, I was determined to get to a few places I hadn’t visited on previous trips. Realistically, I knew I could do justice to two major attractions a day, plus have time for leisurely meals and, of course, high tea.

P

art of any good travel plan is choosing a hotel that is centrally located so you won’t waste time in transit. I settled into The Rubens, a plush boutique hotel across from The Royal Mews at one end of Buckingham Palace. It’s a short walk from St. James’s Park, which is a short walk from Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament and the Churchill War Rooms. Plus, the doorman has a handlebar mustache and red tailcoat. Arriving only in time to settle into the room—done in royal reds and golds—and pick a place for dinner, I opted for The Curry Room, a new restaurant in the hotel. Indian food has been popular in London since before the East India Company, and the cuisine offered here spans the distinct flavors and styles of a dozen of India’s regions. I sampled them all, including my favorites: North Indian butter chicken and Bengal fish curry. Day one started with an easy walk through St. James’s Park from the hotel, which any trip to London should include. The city’s parks are legendary with their mossy old trees, wrought iron fencing and water features. With all of the city’s commotion, these offer tranquil oases amid the chaos. During my visit, a flock of heron had taken up residence in a forest island right in the middle of the park. Emerging on the other side, I faced Westminster Abbey, which is near the Churchill War Rooms. This museum is dedicated to the European leader who repelled the Nazi tide during World War II, and much of the effort was orchestrated at this very site. It’s a fascinating (and chilling) walk through history. Visitors descend into the underground bunker and tour the Cabinet War Room where Churchill met with members of Parliament to discuss strategy. A detailed map of Europe covers one wall, complete with pushpins to indicate troop advancements. Other highlights include the Churchill Suite and the tiny Transatlantic Telephone Room where he spoke in private to President Roosevelt. The museum also displays fascinating memorabilia from other segments of Churchill’s life, including correspondence from his days at boarding school and several paintings he created later in life.

MARCH 27, 2019

Allow a couple of hours for Churchill, then stop in a pub for lunch. If you really want to enjoy the bustling London scene, eat outside and watch the doubledeckers lumber by. You’ll be really close to Parliament, so if you’ve never toured it (and have a couple of hours to spare), you might opt to spend the afternoon learning about the many distinctions between the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The entire compound is regal and oh-so-British in a red and blue velvet kind of way. You’d be shortchanging yourself if you didn’t dedicate a day to London’s hip South Bank area. Historically the poor stepsister across the river Thames, it’s become gentrified with trendy shops, restaurants and housing. It’s a great walking area, where no one seems to be in a hurry to get anywhere fast (not that they could, anyway). There are street performers, outdoor cafes, art exhibits and open-air markets. Here you also will find two must-see attractions: a beautiful re-creation of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and the Tate Modern Museum. One step inside The Globe, an open-air theater in the round, summons images of rowdy Londoners standing around the stage, clapping and booing as they react to characters as silly as Bottom and Falstaff or as serious as Lear and Macbeth. The tour guides themselves are rather theatrical and will entertain you with historical info like the widely held belief that actors were godless brigands and those who came to watch them were hardly better. The Tate Modern is a breathtaking structure built into the former Bankside Power Station. Massive in scale, it also may have some wonderful special exhibit like the one I was fortunate enough to see, Picasso 1932: Love, Fame, Tragedy. The museum gathered 200 of the master’s works, most executed during a year of creative innovation for Picasso and extreme social upheaval in Europe. A wonderful way to take a break from city life is with a trip to Kew Gardens, situated in the town of Kew, about 40 minutes from London center. The town itself is charming, and the gardens have both historical and botanical significance. Originally two royal estates, the properties were given to the nation in 1840.

THE PALM HOUSE AT KEW GARDENS

They were the darlings of Princess Augusta, mother of King George III. Set on 326 acres, they are very different from our own Missouri Botanical Garden. Long, wide promenades speak to their Victorian heritage. Ancient trees and greenery are dotted with seasonal blooms, but the exotica is saved for Kew’s impressive glass conservatories. The two largest, Palm House and Temperate House, make Forest Park’s Jewel Box look like a dollhouse. They’re filled with plants from around the globe, many gathered during the era of British expansion and colonialism. Whatever you do in London, don’t deprive yourself of two very necessary traditions: the full English breakfast and high tea. Breakfast at The Rubens was every gourmand’s dream, with a food bar of breads, cheeses, cold cuts and jams—plus an entree selection that included the ever-present blood sausage (sausages filled with blood that is cooked or dried), Marmite Soldiers (toast with a soft-boiled egg for dipping), and Bubble and Squeak (a dish of boiled potatoes, cabbage and vegetables). As for high tea, it’s one of those experiences that come with the territory: when in Rome, and all that. It doesn’t take the place of dinner, but it sure is fun to eat. It’s worth the price just to sit before the three-tiered caddy laden with tea sandwiches, scones and clotted cream, and pastries you can’t imagine finishing (even though you do). And, of course, there’s the tea.

DEEP THOUGHTS by patty hannum

AN ENTERTAINING GUIDE TO ENTERTAINMENT

birds of passage

We often think of our environment in very black and white terms; if we can’t see or touch something, we may forget it exists. This film asks us to view the world from a more mystical perspective, considering intangibles like faith, ancestry and tradition that dramatically impact our lives. Directed by Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra, Birds of Passage takes place in the 1960s and ‘70s as the drug trade in Colombia is ramping up. It contrasts the bloody banality of traffickers’ activities against the highly spiritual nature of the native Wayúu people. Rapayet (José Acosta) is a young man who cares about raising a family based on tradition, but he also wants to make money selling marijuana. His character development seems to parallel the expansion of the drug trade and the increasing violence that goes with it. My favorite character is Peregrino (José Vicente Cotes), Rapayet’s uncle, who fills the important ceremonial role of ‘word messenger’ for the Wayúu. He’s a protected, revered member of the clan, responsible for communicating messages and warnings between families. I also enjoyed Ursula (Carmiña Martinez), Rapayet’s mother-in-law, an elder who is in tune with ancestral spirits and the earth’s mystical power.

SHOULD YOU SEE IT? Yes, it’s very thought-provoking. J.J.

GLOW FOR SPRING

BY STEPHANIE WALLACE

FRESH, GLOWING SKIN SHOULD BE JUST AS MUCH A PART OF YOUR SPRINGTIME LOOK AS SUNDRESSES AND SANDALS. ARE YOU PREPARED? IF NOT, THE LATEST TREATMENTS CAN ENERGIZE AND REJUVENATE YOUR SKIN IN TIME FOR ITS SEASONAL DEBUT. HYDRAFACIAL

What Does It Do? According to Janine Bilpush, RN, LE,

! te o n e k ma Increased sun exposure means increased risk of damage, Dr. Emily Spataro, a Washington University facial cosmetic surgeon, suggests avoiding any procedures that remove the top layers of skin if you plan on spending a lot of time outdoors. This includes laser resurfacing and harsh chemical peels. “Gentler peels have less downtime, and there is less risk related to sun exposure,” she says. “Other options include radiofrequency treatments, microneedling and light exfoliation.” Surgical procedures aren’t impacted by the sun and offer more dramatic results but require longer downtime as well, Spataro points out. Beyond treatments, proper skin care is vital this time of year. Sunscreen is key, and Spataro notes people should be aware that certain ingredients like alpha hydroxy acids and retinoids increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun.

nurse injector at The Lifestyle Center, the procedure can be customized to meet an individual’s unique skin care needs. “This is not a basic fluff and puff facial,” Bilpush says. “It uses medical-grade serums.” The process removes dead skin cells and extracts impurities while infusing moisturizing and cleansing solutions. It addresses wrinkles, acne, enlarged pores and hyperpigmentation. How Does It Work? The treatment takes as little as 30 minutes to complete, and Bilpush says it involves three stages: hydradermabrasion, extraction and infusion. “The device has a unique double helix tip that unclogs pores while pumping the skin with nutrients,” she explains. “Once the procedure is done, you actually can see what is removed.” Results last around a week, and with ongoing treatment, you may notice more sustained improvement. Recovery: “Unlike with skin peels or microneedling, there is no downtime,” Bilpush says. “There also is little to no irritation. You may be a little pink immediately after, but we use an LED treatment to calm inflammation. It’s the perfect procedure if you’re pressed for time.” Cost: Packages start at $175.

RADIOFREQUENCY TREATMENT What Does It Do? The treatment works below the surface layer to tighten skin and remove fat. Depending on the device used, various areas of the body can be treated, including the face, neck, arms, abdomen and legs. How Does It Work? Radiofrequency energy heats the deeper layers of the skin, stimulating cell turnover and the production of new collagen and elastin while also destroying fat tissue. Patients feel the heat, so there may be some discomfort, and a topical numbing cream is typically used. Duration varies; treating a larger area may take up to two hours. Because the skin tightens slowly, results may not be apparent for two months, and changes may be observed up to six months later. Recovery: No downtime is necessary, and typically, irritation is limited to minimal swelling, redness or tingling immediately following the procedure. Cost: Price varies depending on the device used and the area being treated.

AQUAGOLD FINE TOUCH MICROCHANNELING What Does It Do? “This is what movie stars use to make sure they’re red-carpet ready,” says Carol Anderson, RN, CANS, owner of Nouveau, a Boutique MedSpa. “It’s a microinjection technique that gives you a glowing, porcelain look.” She explains that the treatment can be specialized to an individual’s needs and is commonly used to shrink pores and fill in lines. Anderson adds that along with the face, it can be used on the neck and chest, and the procedure even can address crepey skin on the arms to get you ready for summer. How Does It Work? The device is made of needles the same thickness as hair that inject skin care treatments at a depth of about half a millimeter. Results depend on what is injected, and Anderson says hyaluronic acid fillers and Botox are common. “Botox normally is injected into the muscle, but when used with AquaGold Fine Touch, it has a completely different effect and shrinks pores,” she explains. Results are immediately visible and last six to eight weeks. Recovery: According to Anderson, there is no downtime. “It’s the perfect treatment to get before an event like a wedding or class reunion,” she says. “You may be a little pink the day you have it done, but there is no other irritation.” Cost: Facial treatments average around $500 to $600.

Q: How will one IV Treatment affect me? A: If you are receiving the IV largely for hydration, you will feel that affect take place within minutes of starting the treatment. A: If you are receiveing the treatment for long term effects of anti-aging or boosting your immune system, one must repeat that for sustainability. Our Nouveau membership allows you one IV per month at a rate of $95/month plus other choices and benefits.

SKIN CARE ROUTINE What Does It Do? “Beautiful skin doesn’t come from a one-size-fits-all, miracle treatment,” says Dr. Michele Koo, a plastic surgeon in private practice. “Like a healthy body, healthy skin requires a consistent lifestyle and appropriate care for your specific needs.” She notes that a personalized skin care routine can help with issues like age spots, wrinkles, pores, acne and thin, crepey skin. How Does It Work? According to Koo, your skin regimen doesn’t need to be expensive or contain many products. “Less is more when it comes to regaining healthy skin,” she says. “The more products you use and the harsher the ingredients in them, the more irritated your skin will be. Learn what is appropriate for your skin, and simplify your routine accordingly.” She suggests using products that balance your skin’s pH and take into consideration your age, level of sun exposure, skin oiliness, pore size and color tone. Recovery: A morning and night skin routine that is appropriate for your skin type should cause no irritation, inflammation or other side effects. How Much Does It Cost? The Dr. Koo Premier Skin Care line is $65 to $450 for a 10-month to one-year supply.

EVERY HAIRSTYLIST I’VE EVER BEEN TO HAS SAID THE SAME THING: I HAVE VERY FINE HAIR, BUT LOTS OF IT. BECAUSE OF THIS (AND A LACK OF INTEREST AND TIME TO BLOW DRY MY HAIR), MY SEARCH FOR VOLUMIZING PRODUCTS THAT ACTUALLY WORK IS NEVER-ENDING. I RECENTLY TESTED OUT QUITE A FEW PRODUCTS OFFERING TO CURE MY LIMP LOCKS, AND HERE IS WHAT WORKED.

SHAMPOO

ELENI & CHRIS VOLUMIN MAGNIFYING SHAMPOO A mother-daughter duo created this beauty line derived from the purest ingredients in Scandanavia, l ike the shampoo’s volcanic minerals, glacier water and cloudberry extract. Its smell is intoxicating, a crisp and refreshing scent that stays with you. This one also creates a rich lather, and it left my hair feeling noticeably smooth after I rinsed—in a good way, with no residue. Did it add volume? There was noticeable lift to my hair after one use, even without a blow dry. $27 AT NEIMAN MARCUS AND ELENIANDCHRIS.COM

VO L U M I Z I N G P OW D E R BOSLEY PROFESSIONAL STRENGTH BOS-VOLUMIZE BAMBOOM VOLUMIZING & CLEANSING POWDER Even with the word ‘powder,’ I still expected a spray to come out. Instead, I got a little pouf of just what the name says. And rather than having to mess with a white residue that made my hair look gray, this massaged in perfectly and gave it a boost right away—really! It’s easy to use and does its job. Made from renewable bamboo charcoal, it absorbs oil and removes impurities. Did it add volume? Yes, I noticed a difference right away, and it lasted throughout the day. $24.99 AT ULTA BEAUTY

F OA M C L E A N S E R U N WA S H V O L U M I Z I N G F O A M C L E A N S E R I love the idea of a dry shampoo, especially since my stylist tells me to skip days between washing. But I work out and can’t forgo cleansing of some sort. A lot of dry shampoos leave a white residue, and many have left my hair even more lifeless than before. This product caught my eye since it’s for extra-fine hair prone to going limp (that’s me!). Instructions were to put a blob of the foam on your roots, massage onto the scalp and let dry. I was skeptical that it would leave my hair greasy, but it didn’t. Did it add volume? It did add some life to my hair and didn’t leave any residue. $28 AT ULTA BEAUTY

SHAMPOO R E N P U R E B A M B O O C O C O N U T WAT E R V O L U M E + B O DY S H A M P O O This shampoo is specifically for fine hair that is flat like mine. The company is family-owned and operated and uses no sulfates, phosphates, parabens, dyes, etc. And this collection is plant-based: Bamboo fibers strengthen and add volume; coconut water infuses weightless moisture. Usually sulfate-free shampoos don’t create the thick lather I like, but this one did. Plus, its fragrance was refreshing. One downside: I felt like I still had residue in my hair after rinsing . Did it add volume? Nothing drastic, but neither did it weigh my hair down. $7.99 AT WHOLE FOODS

COVER STORY

IN BLOOM THE GATESWORTH by karyn williams THE GATESWORTH IS ALWAYS BUSTLING WITH ACTIVITY, but when the weather

warms, residents truly can enjoy every inch of its sprawling grounds. This spring at the senior community brings entertainment on the terrace, outdoor renovations and unique outings, all of which help set it apart as an extraordinary place to call home. “Spring is such a beautiful season on our campus as residents walk the courtyards and see our trees and perennials in bloom,” says executive director Carrie Montrey. “More than 1,500 annuals are planted each year, and the grounds feature more than a mile of walking paths, a putting green, a naturally landscaped lake, a reflecting pond and a 45-foot weeping willow.” It’s quite the scene, and residents can enjoy it on their own or with the Walking Club, led by a fitness instructor starting in May. The community currently is undergoing a major renovation to its original courtyard (one of four), which includes a new travertine patio with fountain and seating area, as well as updates to landscaping around apartment patios and along walking paths in the area. To ensure they were part of the process, residents were asked for their input on it all. “The Gatesworth is their home,” Montrey notes. “We want them to be surrounded by things they love.” Many residents used to be home gardeners, and they requested plants they once cared for, like hostas, ferns, hydrangeas and rhododendron. “They have decades of experience with maintaining gorgeous gardens of their own, so their knowledge is invaluable,” Montrey says. Residents are always the focus at The Gatesworth. The community has countless activities planned year-round, and getting to do things outdoors only expands the packed calendar. Montrey says the upcoming annual Pooch Parade is always a big hit.

CELIA AND SALVATORE SUTERA ENJOY THE WALKING PATHS ON THE GATESWORTH GROUNDS.

“This outdoor event lets residents bring their dogs with them to socialize with friends,” she explains. “It’s a fun way to show off your pet, and of course the dogs get goodies and prizes.” Residents are looking forward to the new Beer n’ Brats series on the terrace, which is just as it sounds: complimentary brews and brats for residents and their families, along with screenings of favorite classics. The first will feature Damn Yankees. Events like these show just how much residents are valued. Family members, even the furry ones, are always welcome, and the atmosphere is kept fun, active and social. Salvatore and Celia Sutera have lived at The Gatesworth for seven years and look forward to enjoying another spring spent with family and friends. “I love walking the many paths throughout the courtyards looking for a new batch of ducklings,” Celia says. “And I search for other wildlife, too. I’ve seen raccoons, fox, owls and hawks.” She also enjoys getting out in the community. Seasonal outings offered include an evening performance of Shakespeare in the Park and a day trip to Warm Springs Ranch, home of the Clydesdales. Whatever their interests, residents will find something to do at The Gatesworth. Even if it’s just dining al fresco with friends on the patio, spring will be a season of enjoyment. &

the idea of the future.” Levis and O’Connell also worked with Wash. U. to develop a computer algorithm for matching roommates. Each applicant fills out a detailed questionnaire, and results are compared with a database to find the best matchups in terms of personality, interests and activities. Close attention is paid to the parties’ cultural needs, and they can request background checks on potential roommates if they wish.

A Perfect Match

Young adults usually contribute between $400 and $500 a month, and they also help with a variety of tasks like grocery shopping, dog walking, yard care and errands. “Each situation is different,” Levis notes. “We don’t create a lot of rules about how roommates interact.” The young adult’s role is not a caretaking one, according to Levis. “If the homeowner develops health problems, the arrangement comes to an end,” he says. He expects the model to be popular among graduate students from other countries who are studying here.

A

nyone who has ever been a cash-strapped college student understands the frustration of trying to find housing on a budget. For many, there’s also a need for friendship, moral support and help navigating an unfamiliar city. So what’s the solution? According to local entrepreneur John Levis, St. Louis has a considerable pool of baby boomers and empty nesters living by themselves in large homes. To fill two needs at the same time, he and business partner John O’Connell recently launched Odd Couples Housing, a service that matches senior homeowners with young adults looking for living arrangements.

Levis says the idea for Odd Couples came about when two of his wife’s older relatives moved in together and discovered it was the perfect way to save money and feel more connected. “We paid for a practicum at Washington University’s Olin School of Business and originally looked at pairing seniors with each other,” Levis says. “The project involved graduate students doing a study about the feasibility of starting our business—what the current environment was like and how much competition there was. When we met with them, they said, ‘Putting seniors together is a great idea, but what about us? We’d love to live in nice homes and save money.’”

Levis says it’s fun to hear stories and anecdotes from both generations. “One of our arrangements paired a young man with a woman in Webster Groves,” he notes. “When we asked him how things were going, he joked that their only disagreement was about going outside and getting the morning paper.” Another match placed an international graduate student with a retired university dean. “The young man’s parents sent him a care package of food from India each month,” Levis says. “The dean is a huge fan of Indian food, so his eyes lit up when he heard about that!”

The partners took their suggestion, and now, the new company pairs responsible young adults with healthy, active seniors. So far, the results have been positive, Levis says. “Research suggests that by 2030, about 60 percent of the population will be 65 or older,” he notes. “We think this kind of generational intermixing is

“We’ve been surprised that not many other cities seem to have a similar program,” Levis says. “We heard about someone in Denver who created a strictly rental concept, but our model is more about help, companionship and compatibility.” He says there are plans to expand Odd Couples to other cities and states, and the company hopes to win NIH grant funds to further refine its roommate algorithm.

Owner Bryan Mauller says he bought this home in the Hi-Pointe neighborhood when he was single, and it continued to serve him well after he married and started a family. “I chose the house because it’s perfect for an active lifestyle,” he says. “Forest Park is practically in our backyard, and so much else is close by—coffee shops, restaurants, and nightlife in the Central West End, Clayton and Delmar Loop. My wife, Alexandra, and I love walking over to the zoo with our daughter in the early morning.” Mauller says his family is moving to another part of St. Louis to be closer to relatives, and they’ll miss the close-knit neighborhood that has provided many conveniences and memorable moments. “The home’s location at Forest Park’s western border, walkability to DeMun Village and immaculate open floor plan make it very special,” says agent Jeffrey Warner.

what do you like best about the area? We love the neighborhood because it holds a lot of great memories. We went on our first date and got engaged here, and we brought our daughter home to this house after she was born. We’ve also made some wonderful friendships with neighbors. There are lots of young families, and it’s a perfect environment to raise kids. The homes and streets are not too spread out, so it’s easy to make friends. The area really is conducive to a great, active lifestyle and a strong sense of community.

what are some other memories you’ve created in the home? We told our relatives about our engagement here, and we’ve had friends and family over for a lot of great dinners and wine and cheese parties.

There’s a bar where people can sit and visit. We always congregate in the kitchen when guests what do you find most appealing about the house? come over; it’s the heart of the home. Most people think of spring colors as mostly pastels, but I love the bright pinks, reds, oranges and yellows of tulips and daffodils. For me, they really say spring is here! So don’t be afraid of color with a capital ‘C’ when you bring a little of the season into your home.

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS TO INCORPORATE SPRING COLORS INTO YOUR HOME?

Two of the easiest ways to add color to a room are with accessories and paint. For a less expensive route, add a few pillows and a throw, and paint an accent wall. These features are easy to change seasonally or as you tire of one specific color.

accent wall. In this very neutral guest bedroom, we added soft pink pillows, a shocking pink throw and a bright, graphic wallpaper (Cole & Son’s Geometric II Book, Delano pattern). Paper with a bold pattern easily can overwhelm a room if used on all four walls, but an accent wall is the perfect option for a geometric pattern. There is nothing boring about this room now. If you want to spent a little more money and make a huge statement, use wallpaper on an

Uncertain of what shades to bring into your decor this spring? Here are some color trends that are heating up in 2019. Bright coral. Energizing and uplifting, Living Coral is the Pantone color of the year, and it’s likely on everyone’s design radar. For a unique twist, bring orange and pink components into a space instead of just applying one hue. Pale pinks. Thanks to their neutral properties and compatibility with other colors, these shades are expected to be everywhere this spring. Sunny yellows. Take this trend straight from the runway and into your home. The optimistic hue pairs well with pinks, blues and beiges.

Electric citrus. Along with lemon yellows, bright oranges and lime greens are a playful way to add more extreme colors to a space. Bold aqua. Coral isn’t the only shade earning color-of-the-year status. HGTV Home by Sherwin Williams went with the vivid cyan Reflecting Pool as its choice. Saturated hues. Take advantage of the sunshine in spring and summer, and experiment with darker shades. Forest greens, navy blues and charcoal grays add dramatic flair to rooms with a lot of natural light.

HOMEWORK: BIG PICTURE AND LITTLE DETAILS MAYBE IT’S TOO OBVIOUS TO SAY, but the first step in trying to improve the appearance of your house is to take a good, long look at it. Do this from the vantage point from which you and your guests typically view it. Then ask yourself the following questions. The answers will guide your renovation. ▶ Do I (or others) think the house looks handsome? ▶ Is the overall composition appealing? ▶ Are its prominent features balanced with more minor ones? ▶ Does it look dull, normal or too busy? ▶ Do the architecture and landscape work well together? ▶ Do the colors and details support the home’s design strengths? ▶ Are there any issues that negatively affect its curb appeal?

My first impression of the example house is that it looks washed out. A longer look reveals that there is actually a lot to work with. By removing the fabric awnings and painting the shutters a dark green for a jolt of contrast, the balance of the overall composition comes alive. A new, permanent front door overhang, a real Juliet balcony, new garage dormers and coach lamps add minor supporting details. The existing landscape is bolstered by adding more red perennials and removing two evergreen bushes in the generous lawn. The ‘big picture’ response here was that there was nothing major that needed to be changed. A handful of small improvements, though, make remarkable upgrades to the home’s overall impact. Sincerely, —HOMEWORK HOMEWORK IS PENNED BY PAUL DOERNER, FOUNDING PARTNER OF THE LAWRENCE GROUP. IF YOU WOULD LIKE YOUR HOME CRITIQUED, CONTACT US AT HOMEWORK@TOWNANDSTYLE.COM.
