A smaller pilot study previously showed families who received free diapers from a diaper bank gained income and their children required fewer sick visits to the pediatrician.

COVER STORY

INDIVIDUALLY FOCUSED ACADEMY OF ST. LOUIS

MEETING THEIR FAMILY’S UNIQUE NEEDS is a fundamental

part of a parent’s role. When the community isn’t offering the right tools for children to find success and happiness, a family might be called to create something new that works. That was certainly the case for Terri O’Daniel when she realized the independent Catholic school her daughter Kara attended wasn’t offering the educational or socioemotional support for her learning disability. Unable to find either a faith-based or secular institution that could engage Kara at her own pace, O’Daniel created one that would. Located in Manchester, Academy of St. Louis is an independent, Catholic school that has been serving students in kindergarten through grade 12 with learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder and developmental delays for 18 years. When establishing the school, O’Daniel combined her decade of experience in school administration with the knowledge and expertise her mother, Ann Dunn, cultivated from a career as a trauma nurse and administrator at Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital. In 2004, they founded the school with the mission of providing an individualized curriculum, a nurturing environment, social integration and faith formation to students. Fully accredited, Academy of St. Louis’ educational approach is centered on individually designed curricula that are curated to meet the unique needs of students. “Each one of our students functions at different levels in different skills, so we create individualized plans to best develop their academic, social and life skills,” O’Daniel says. “Our program was designed to begin serving students in kindergarten because early intervention is

key. The sooner you start engaging kids and helping them build the necessary tools to learn, the more likely they are to succeed.” The school offers financial aid and also has access to Missouri state grants for every student. The school also helps students prepare for postsecondary success with its transition program. “Around 80% of young adults with cognitive learning disabilities are unemployed, and their job options are often very limited,” O’Daniel notes. “We talk with students to set goals and work with them to achieve those goals. One student wanted to become a firefighter like his father, but that wouldn’t be possible. We worked through the options with him, and he decided to become a dispatcher to stay in the same field. With that new goal in mind, he was able to work hard and pass the dispatcher exam on his first try.” Academy of St. Louis students have attended two- and four-year colleges, found gainful employment, enrolled in tech schools and enlisted in the military. This school year, Academy of St. Louis has been enjoying its new home at St. Joseph’s Parish. It moved into the parish’s recently renovated elementary school. The new space means not only added capacity to welcome more students, but the facilities also allow Academy of St. Louis to expand its offerings. This includes the addition of five extracurricular after-school programs and additional services, including occupational and speech therapy, a writing coach and a Wilson Reading System specialist. “We now have amenities on our campus, such as more playgrounds, soccer and track fields, and a family center with a stage,” O’Daniel says. “It instilled a lot of pride in our community. Students are excited to come to school every day.” &

We can count on New Jewish Theatre for unique, thought-provoking productions. Sometimes NJT’s plays are very heavy and deeply troubling. Other performances are hilarious, curtain up to curtain down. There’s tragedy, comedy, agony, ecstasy … kind of like life itself. Well, an upcoming production looks to be just about the sweetest thing imaginable, a long-distance romance conducted completely through the mail during World War II. Ken Ludwig’s Dear Jack, Dear Louise is inspired by his parents’ romance as pen pals during the war. Two actors chronicle the romance spanning the war years between a military doctor, stationed in Medford, Oregon, among other places, and a budding young actress whose career hopes have taken her all the way from Brooklyn to Manhattan. Given the distance between them, the only way they can maintain, let alone grow, their relationship is through letters exchanged at breakneck pace or with frustrating, worrisome sluggishness. The show opens Thursday, June 9, and wraps Sunday, June 26, at the J’s Wool Studio Theatre.

The arts just can’t be stopped! So much art is going around that we can’t possibly cover it all. We may have missed one prestigious arts event, but there’s another one coming up soon. Here’s a little about what already happened: Dianne Isbell, hat designer extraordinaire for the Kentucky Derby, and other notable area women at events in the StL, was honored as Outstanding Working Artist at St. Louis Visionary Arts Awards at Sun Theater in Grand Center. We profiled Isbell in Notable Neighbors several years ago, when she was with St. Louis Fashion Fund. The five other women also honored: ▶ Hassie Davis, Outstanding Teaching Artist ▶ Andrea Hughes, Community Impact Artist ▶ Mee Jey, Emerging Artist ▶ Emily Rauh Pulitizer, Lifetime Achievement ▶ Pam Trapp, Major Contributor to SYRHEA CONAWAY the Arts Coming up in two weeks is multi-talented performer Syrhea Conaway, who will join Chamber Project St. Louis to perform “Silver Linings” at the Contemporary Art Museum from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 18. Conaway premiered the work-in-progress virtually in early 2021, and this live performance will include new music she composed during the past two tumultuous years. Balancing the program is the Clarinet Quintet by Johannes Brahms, a work he came out of retirement to compose. The program is free but reservations are required.

This has nothing to do with global warming: Greenland being cast adrift, arctic ice melting or sea levels rising six feet by the time your great-grandchildren may need to consider leaving Florida for the higher ground of Sedona, Arizona. We were just kidding about Greenland, but what will be left up there once all the ice is cut loose and marauding icebergs make Atlantic Ocean traffic too hazardous for your health? But why worry about any of that when we’ll all be long dead, right? Earth Day just made it all too overwhelming to comprehend. (To which readers say, “OK, Boomer.”) So, anyway, something may melt and evaporate closer to home, after a fashion. Here’s the skinny: The aging ice arena in Creve Coeur needs approximately $2.5 million to remain in operation. It was constructed in 1970, the very year Earth Day premiered. The city has hired a consulting firm to assess the feasibility of the rink remaining in operation; consultants presently are in the discovery phase of their work. Study results will help guide the city council’s decision on whether city funds should go toward maintaining the arena’s aging infrastructure, or whether the city should consider alternative uses for the complex that may better serve the community. What are hopeful Olympic ice dancers or wannabe Blues superstars to do? Meanwhile, the city has posted a questionnaire on its website, crevecoeurmo.gov. Comments close May 15 and input will be shared with the council at its June 13 or 27 meeting, when the city decides whether to keep the arena. This should be of great interest to the metro’s burgeoning amateur hockey community. And, of course, curling aficionados.

GREENLAND, A TERRITORY OF DENMARK—AND NO, STILL NOT FOR SALE—IS THE LARGEST ISLAND ON THE PLANET. WHAT REALLY BIG ISLAND COMES IN AT NO. 2?

LAST ISSUE’S Q&A What are a few other roles William Shatner played, besides Star Trek, Boston Legal and a spokesman in the Priceline commercials? Before and after superstardom as Capt. James T. Kirk on Star Trek, William Shatner played dozens of TV roles. His 1950s gigs ranged from The Howdy Doody Show on TV to Shakespeare onstage—Henry V with Christopher Plummer. Fast-forward, from the 1980s to the present, he starred in the cops and robbers TV show T.J. the metro They had to leave in the middle of the night with only the clothes on their backs, maybe clutching a hurriedly retrieved stuffed animal, when Afghanistan had fallen to the Taliban. American forces were pulling out in August 2021 after having fought the Islamist-led insurgency for 20 years. Corruption in the U.S.-backed ‘democratic’ regime reportedly had been rampant for years. Multiple news sources alleged Ashraf Ghani, Afghanistan’s elected president, fled with a helicopter and four cars full of cash as the Taliban approached Kabul. The shadow government evaporated like a mist and the insurgents seized the government palace. The Islamists were bloodthirsty for revenge against any and all Afghans who had aided the U.S. effort: Military personnel and translators were among those at the top of the list. They were to be executed, along with their families. Meanwhile, in a suburb of the StL, Afghanistan was the last thing Julie Wurdack had on her mind. The tireless mom was preparing to send her quadruplets away to college; three girls and a boy, each to a different school out of state. She felt as though she’d lost her footing. “With four empty bedrooms, it was quiet as a mausoleum,” says Wurdack, who had no idea that, by February, she was to take 10 Afghan young adults, teens and their mother under her wing as a host family with Welcome Neighbor STL, a nonprofit established in 2016 as a response to the Syrian refugee crisis. (We have changed the family’s names to ensure their continued security and peace of mind in America.) Jamal Siddiqi, 29—a U.S. Army veteran with 11 years as a translator in Afghanistan under his belt—is the de facto patriarch of a family that includes his mother, Ruqia, his nine siblings and their growing families. Until he lands a white-collar job commensurate with his skills and experience, he’s driving for Uber. His sister Fatima, 19, her professional sights set on neurosurgery, works at Mercy while studying nursing. Under the Taliban, however, her schooling would have ceased; the subservience of women is an integral part of how this ultraconservative sect interprets the Quran. Polygamy also is practiced in much of the Muslim world: Ruqia was one of her late husband’s three wives. Jamal, whose youngest sibling is 13, is married, with two special-needs kids of his own. The family lives in a house in South County that Jamal was able to secure with a VA loan. It needs a third bathroom. The community has responded to many immediate needs as the extended Siddiqi family gets on its feet. Seeger Toyota donated a minivan. They’ve no need for clothing at present, although bureaucratic red tape still holds up certain benefits, such as food stamps. The International Institute handles mind-numbing reams of paperwork, exacerbated by the emergency nature of the Afghan refugee crisis, while day-to-day ‘boots on the ground’ belong to Wurdack and her compatriots; after we met for coffee and conversation, she was taking the family to a food pantry. The generosity of St. Louisans is unparalleled, of course. Wurdack notes some big-dollar donations have come through Facebook, many from her grade-school classmates at Our Lady of the Pillar parish in Creve Coeur. Oh, and by the way, Wurdack is a Villa girl. AS READERS OF THIS COLUMN KNOW,

frustration or smugness. A trait I admire but don’t possess myself. Growing up, most of the Fitzgeralds got into lots of shenanigans. Tim, not so much. But he kept his mouth shut, which if you know anything about large families, is an amazing trait. My parents often left Tim in charge of my sister and me, which meant one thing: PARTY. He was always a good sport as he would arrive home after his date with Terrie, his future wife, and survey the beer cans, overflowing ashtrays and stray people on the floor of the living room. “Just get it cleaned up,” he’d say as he walked upstairs to bed. We always did, and he never said a word. We had a neighbor for that. Tim tried to protect his sisters from their own stupidity. He explained to me that if a guy doesn’t call you back, you don’t keep calling (hey, I was young!) and threatened another guy that if he hurt his sister, again, he would have to answer to him. When Tim was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, he accepted it with his usual calmness. No ranting or

I am fortunate to come from a large, loud Irish Catholic family. All of us have a story to tell and love being the center of attention, well, except for my brother Tim. You see, Tim is the one in the family who is just as happy to sit back and listen to a story, take in the chaos and then wait for the perfect time to say something witty to remind us that he is the smartest one of all. Tim is the brother who separates my sister and me from all the other brothers. He is the youngest, so he was on the receiving end of all the teasing by the older three, but he never turned it on his two sisters. Instead, he became the kind of big brother everyone should have in their lives. All of us think we are smart, just ask us. But Tim is the one you want on any team that requires knowledge or strategy. Play Time! by stephanie wallace

Michelle McDaniel understands how important play is to kids—and parents. Not only is she a mother of six (including two sets of twins!), she’s a registered nurse and the creator of We Came To Play, a traveling soft play rental company that caters to infants and toddlers. The company’s mission is to provide kids with a safe place to explore, have fun and learn through play while also making parties and events as stress-free for parents as possible. What inspired you to create We Came To Play? The idea came from my children. I had two sets of twins less than two years apart. While they were at different car seat levels, it was hard to get them to other people’s parties or hold parties for my own kids anywhere but our house. I had seen a similar concept outside of St. Louis, but there was nothing like that here. Then in 2020, I saw how difficult the pandemic was on my kids. Our house used to be full of other children on the weekends, but then people couldn’t come, and we couldn’t go anywhere. I’m a nurse, so that made things even more difficult. I wanted them to be able to do something. We Came To Play was the perfect option. How did your experience as a mother help you develop your business model? I know what parents want for their money. They want their kids to have fun and be tired by the end of the event. I named my services after how tired the kids will be after playing—from Yawning to Exhausted. When your child is a baby or toddler, they can end up in your arms, even at birthday parties. I wanted to create something where mom’s won’t have to worry about having a hip rider all day. Kids can crawl and have fun while developing skills, and moms have to worry less than they might at places like Chuck E. Cheese because everything is age-appropriate. Did you kids help inspire the packages? Definitely. Even though some of them are twins, all my kids are so unique. From how they walk and talk to even how they brush their teeth, none of them are the same. I knew I had to create play systems that could be more inclusive. If a child can only crawl while their peers are walking, they still need to have options to play even if they can’t do everything. In the ballpit, I can add textured and sensory balls if there’s a kid who needs that. The experience really can be customized to fit the child—whether it's adding a bigger ball pit, including soft climbers for crawlers or bringing soft balls that can be thrown without worry. My children’s own differences really helped me think about individual needs children may have.

How did the launch go? Our soft launch was in May of 2020 with a party for my twin girls, but in June, my foot got caught in a mole hill in my yard, and I broke my ankle. It was a bad break, so I couldn’t focus on the business while I was recovering. However, I knew I had to continue and show parents what we could offer them. I was able to really get started in December of that year. How do you balance being an entrepreneur with family? It’s challenging. As a nurse, I always scheduled my shifts around when my kids would be home. For We Came to Play, I strike a balance by getting my family involved in the process. Whether it's helping with the party favors or creating coloring books, they love to help out. They often ask me if we have a party this weekend. I also document and schedule everything, including family nights. In my line of work, if it’s not written down, it didn’t happen.

If you have passion about what you do, you’ll bring your own unique spin.”

Do you have any advice for mom’s who may want to launch their own business? Never give up because you’ll always wonder what could have happened. What works for one person isn’t going to be a perfect fit for another, so do what feels right for you. As a nurse and an event planner, I never feel like I am just doing a job because I love taking care of people. It’s also important to understand that just because someone else can’t do it, doesn’t mean you won’t succeed. Rome wasn’t built in a day, so make sure you’re planning in both the short and long term. Understand how much you can afford to give to a project, both in terms of money and your time. Don’t worry if you encounter competition. It’s OK if others are going the same thing because it’s impossible for you to serve everyone. If you have passion about what you do, you’ll bring your own unique spin. I’m all for moms starting small businesses. That’s how we enrich St. Louis and Missouri.

STUDENT STANDOUTS by stephanie wallace

OWEN HANFORD OF CHAMINADE COLLEGE PREPARATORY SCHOOL HIGH SCHOOL CAN BE AN EXCITING time to explore interests. For Owen Hanford, a freshman at Chaminade, that means getting to spend more time on stage. He’s been treading the boards since elementary school, and now, he’s looking forward to expanding his horizons not only as a performer, but also as a student. How did you get involved in theater? I started when I was 6 years old. My sister was a Muny kid, and one year, they were looking for a boy to be in Billy Elliot. They asked performers if they had younger siblings, and I just happened to fit the role. I’ve been very involved in The Muny and other organizations ever since.

Are you involved in the behind–the-scenes aspects of production? So far, my involvement has only been on stage, but I think it’s so important to see and understand the other side. This year, I want to get as involved behind the scenes as I have been in performing.

What is your favorite part of performing? I enjoy being able to be someone else on stage. When performing, you can be whoever you want to be. I also like the relationship you create with the audience. You make people laugh and cry. I have the ability to develop an emotional connection I never thought I would, and I enjoy that so much.

How has your freshman year been? It has been good. It’s very different from middle school. It’s a lot more chaotic, and I don’t have as much free time to do things as I used to, but I’m glad to get to learn from such great teachers and enhance my capabilities at Chaminade. I’m excited to try out other extracurriculars. I’m also looking forward to meeting new people through the theater program.

Do you have any favorite performances? My favorite show I’ve been a part of is definitely Matilda at The Muny. I played Bruce, and it was so much fun. I was in sixth grade, playing a kindergartener, so I got to go back to my childish roots for the role.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? When I have free time, I like to hang out with friends, and I also enjoy swimming.

by dr. tim jordan EMPATHY

EMPATHY CAN BE SEEN IN CHILDREN DURING THEIR VERY FIRST YEAR OF LIFE, and it is arguably one of the most important qualities to develop in them as children grow into adults. Showing empathy means sensing other people’s emotions while imagining what they might be thinking or feeling to better understand their perspective. Newborns have been observed crying in response to another newborn’s cry, an act researchers agree is an early sign of empathy development. Studies also show that when a newborn hears a baby crying, their sucking motion and heart rate slow as a response to the sound. At around six months of age, babies start using social referencing, which is when they will look to a parent to gauge their reaction to a person or situation which then influences how the baby responds. Studies show that at around two years of age, children start to show genuine empathy— understanding how other people feel even when they don’t feel the same way themselves. And not only do they feel another person’s pain, but they actually try to soothe it. More advanced reasoning about other people’s emotions develops by around age five or six, and research shows that parents who promote and model empathy raise more empathetic children. Not surprisingly, people with empathy have stronger interpersonal connections and are more eager to collaborate, effectively negotiate, demonstrate compassion and offer support. They also are better team players who are more willing to work with others to solve problems. One study of around 900 kids aged 11 to 13 found participants with higher levels of empathy were more likely to engage in “assertive bystander behavior,” meaning they were willing to stand up to a bully on behalf of someone not in their peer group. So, here are some ways can you help yours kids develop more empathy: 1. Establishing a safe, secure and loving relationship with parents is the first milestone. A child who feels accepted and understood by you will be able to accept and understand others as they grow. 2. Label and validate your child’s emotions. When they see someone else upset, ask questions: I wonder why Annie is crying? Why do you think Annie looks so sad? 3. Use pretend play with dolls or stuffed animals to allow kids to adopt different personas and solve problems as a different character. 4. Read or make up stories that involve kids or people with diverse emotions. Parents can pause while reading to ask: How do you think that made them feel? How would that make you feel? What would help them feel better? Researchers have shown that reading fiction promotes empathy by allowing kids to see the world through someone else’s eyes. Together parents and children can look at a character’s body language and facial expressions and then identify corresponding emotions. 5. Spend time with diverse people. From a very young age, we find it easier to empathize with someone we see as similar. Kids can learn that they have many things in common with all kinds of folks by spending time with others. Teach your children to respect all people despite perceived differences. 6. Regularly considering other people’s perspectives helps make empathy a natural reflex. Discuss with your child ethical dilemmas that help them appreciate various perspectives. In addition, teach your children to be aware of the consequences of their actions for others. When they make a mistake, direct their attention to the distress of the person who may be hurt by their behavior. This strengthens their motivation to do the right thing and avoid mistakes in the future. Acknowledge your children whenever they go out of their way to show kindness and compassion, in big ways and small. Higher levels of empathy and understanding produce more courage to do the right thing and to speak out against injustice. Empathy could be one of the most important qualities to develop in young people so that they go on to be successful actors in a complicated world. & TIM JORDAN, M.D., IS A BEHAVIORAL PEDIATRICIAN WHO WORKS WITH GIRLS IN GRADE SCHOOL THROUGH COLLEGE. COVER STORY

STAGES ST. LOUIS

by stephanie wallace STAGES ST. LOUIS IS HELPING PUT THE STL ON THE MAP when it comes to world class theatrical productions. This month, the performing arts company will present the pre-Broadway world premiere of The Karate Kid - The Musical, a new show based on the beloved 1984 film.“This is one of the most exciting things that has ever happened for St. Louis,” says Jack Lane, STAGES co-founder and executive producer. “You usually think of L.A. and Chicago as places to premiere shows, but my goal is to make St. Louis the destination for Broadway-bound debuts. The production means so much for putting us on the international artistic map.” The Karate Kid, which will be on stage at the Kirkwood Performing Arts Center May 25 through June 26, is a global collaborative effort, bringing together a team of professionals from St. Louis, New York and Japan. Pre-production planning began during the pandemic, so many meetings were conducted over video conference, but Lane says the team is excited to be working in person during workshops and rehearsals. “It’s great to have everyone together in the same room, getting the show ready for opening night,” he notes. “The process really taught us about the potential of collaboration. I’m sure this won’t be the last international production for STAGES.” The Karate Kid will be helmed by director Amon Miyamoto, who was the first Japanese director of a Broadway production with his revival of Pacific Overtures. The musical’s book was written by Robert Mark Kamen, who wrote the original film’s screenplay based on his own experiences as a teenager learning martial arts. The creative team is rounded out by composer and lyricist Drew Gasparini, choreographers Keone and Mari Madrid, Tony Award-winning scenic designer Derek McLane and costume designer Ayako Maeda. “These are professionals at the top of their game, which motivates everyone involved to work harder,” Lane says.

DIRECTOR AMON MIYAMOTO AND WRITER ROBERT MARK KAMEN

The musical’s cast is filled with a mix of veteran performers and young actors, many of whom may end up making their Broadway debut with the show. “The cast is wonderfully diverse, and everyone understands that they are a part of something really special,” Lane explains. “All of the performers have been working so hard. It’s exhilarating to be surrounded by so much young talent. The eyes of New York are truly on this production.” STAGES’ 2022 season also will include Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights and the classic musical A Chorus Line. After the difficulties of the last two years, Lane notes that everyone is excited to be back on stage. “It’s going to be a thrilling season as we rise out of the pandemic,” he says. “The fact that we are able to present something like The Karate Kid is testament not only to the tenacity of STAGES, but also the unwavering support of the community. When it comes to TO WN NE WS the arts, St. Louis is one of the most supportive communities in the country, and we wouldn’t survive without that generosity.” & SPEC IAL SECT ION

PUTTING CLIENTS FIRST THE REALTY SHOP ST. LOUIS

by julia m. johnson THE OWNERSHIP OF A COMPANY you do business with

often reflects a great deal on the kind of service and attention you can expect from it. Amanda Alejandro, who owns The Realty Shop St. Louis with her husband Jay Steinback, notes local corporate ownership of a firm such as theirs can translate into seamless coverage of clients’ needs and expectations. “It matters that we are owned and operated here in St. Louis, and that we are female-owned,” says Alejandro, who has more than 16 years of experience as a real estate agent and entrepreneur. “During this spring market, consumers have a lot of questions about complex topics like inventory saturation, interest rates and inflation. They can be sure they won’t see any gaps in service when they do business with us. I think women are known for their ability to do a lot of things well simultaneously, and I really try to bring that versatility into the business.” Alejandro says The Realty Shop helps clients with everything they need for a successful transaction, including arrangements for a loan, deed transfers, home photography and videography, as-is home purchasing and other services. The company serves clients who are buying, selling, renting, building a house, refinancing and getting insured. She says consumers who contact The Realty Shop to buy or sell a property can always expect a courteous response, see properties when it works for them and be confident they are dealing with an agent who understands local and national sales activity. “As competitive as the market still is these days, it’s possible for opportunities to be overlooked,” Alejandro

Introducing our new

says. “But you won’t miss out when doing business with our company. Homes still are getting four to seven offers each, and they still are going over list price on average. We track all of the area offers that are being made each week, so we know what contracts have been accepted, and we can see which offers are most successful. Our company has a weekly contract acceptance rate of 96%, which is much higher than the average.” A major reason behind The Realty Shop’s successful formula is the high level of customer convenience it offers, according to Alejandro. “We recently were licensed to add a title company, so we now will be processing titles internally, and we have other business units coming online as well,” she notes. “By the end of the year, our new mortgage company also will be in operation.” Some experts predict interest rates will see a double-digit rise, so the company feels it is important to have all related services under one roof to keep the process easy and affordable for clients, she adds. “Here’s how I often explain our business to consumers,” Alejandro says. “If you were looking to make a significant purchase like a car, would you go into the private marketplace and deal with an individual who doesn’t have the resources to vet the car and make sure it’s the right buy for you? Chances are you’d feel more confident visiting an established, reputable dealer, because there’s a team to help with sales, financing, service, maintenance and everything else in one spot. We believe that same kind of one-stop convenience brings success in the current real estate market.” &

TAI KE SHABU SHABU first impression »

Tai Ke originally opened in U.City in 2015, but the popular Taiwanese spot was forced to close its doors in 2020 due to the impending arrival of Costco. The team launched a new concept a little further west on Olive Blvd., combining dishes from the original menu with shabu shabu, a Japanese-style hot pot. The highlight of the new space is a large white bar featuring induction cooktops where guests can cook protein and veggies in individual hot pots.

GUA BAO, $7.99: These steamed buns come with braised pork belly, cilantro, ground peanuts and pickled mustard greens. Even with one member of our dining party not liking cilantro and another who doesn’t do peanuts, these were a hit. The pork belly is marinated perfectly, leaving it moist and flavorful. It also wasn’t just a mouthful of fat like the cut can sometimes be. The serving comes with two buns, making it a nice bite to share. STICKY RICE CAKE, $6.99:

Like the Gua Bao, this is a dish from the Taiwanese Street Snack menu. The little dome of rice is served with dried shrimp, shiitake mushrooms, pork floss and a sauce. The flavors of this one strike the perfect balance. A nice sweetness is paired with an umami richness that makes it pretty addicting.

TAI KE CRISPY CHICKEN,

$7.99: The chicken was crispy, flavorful and moist. The breading is more akin to panko than what is generally found on traditional American fried chicken. One member of our dining party likened it to the cornbread coating often found on oysters. The serving we were given was only dark meat, so white meat fans take note.

MUSHROOM HOT POT,

$17.99: The sole vegetarian hot pot option, this is served with vegetable broth instead of the pork that comes with the others. The broth is available in original or spicy. We opted for the latter, which was flavorful without burning your taste buds off. On its own, the hot pot comes with a variety of mushrooms, greens, corn and lotus root. The dish is endlessly customizable with various add-ons, ranging from more veggies to dumplings and meatballs to seafood and proteins.

As a fan of the original Tai Ke, it’s great to see that it not only survived its move, but also is thriving and evolving with its new concept. The new space is lovely and inviting, and the addition of hot pot creates a dining experience you won’t be able to find anywhere else in St. Louis right now. Plus, the dishes that made the move from the original menu are as tasty as ever. It’s truly a win-win for foodies. F6 |

$9.99: The name is no joke—the dish comes out on a sizzling plate. It consists of noodles cooked with bell peppers and onions and served with a black pepper sauce. If you are a fan of Tai Ke’s Sizzling Tenderloin Beef, this is a nice option if you’re looking for something without meat or just prefer noodles over rice.

GETTING real WITH FOOD by alaina hinkle

These salmon skewers are going to be one of your favorite things to grill this spring and summer. They have the perfect blend of sweet and spicy thanks to a simple homemade marinade. Plus, there’s a lighter sriracha cilantro mayo sauce to drizzle on top. Quick and easy to put together, these will quickly become a family favorite.

EASY SWEET AND SPICY SALMON SKEWERS PREP TIME: 10 MIN. COOK TIME: 8 MIN.

MARINADE:

2 LBS. ATLANTIC SALMON ½ C. SWEET CHILI SAUCE ¼ C. SRIRACHA 2 CLOVES GARLIC, MINCED 1 TBSP. TOASTED SESAME SEED OIL ½ TSP. SALT

SRIRACHA CILANTRO MAYO: ½ C. MAYO ¹ 3 C. GREEK YOGURT

2 TBSP. SRIRACHA 1 CLOVE GARLIC, MINCED ¼ C. FRESH CILANTRO, CHOPPED

Instructions 1. With a sharp knife at a 45-degree angle, cut into the edge of the salmon filet width-wise and cut the filet off the skin. Continue until you are able to gently peel off the rest of the skin. Then cut salmon into one-inch cubes. 2. In a medium sized mixing bowl, add sweet chili sauce, ¼ c. sriracha, two cloves of minced garlic, toasted sesame seed oil and salt. Whisk until thoroughly combined. Then place your salmon cubes into the bowl, toss generously in the marinade. Cover and place in refrigerator to marinate for 30 minutes. 3. Add mayo, Greek yogurt, two tbsp. sriracha, one of clove minced garlic and cilantro. Whisk until thoroughly combined. Place in refrigerator until ready to serve. 4. Turn grill on medium high heat. Place five of the salmon cubes onto each skewer. Grill for two minutes on each side of your cubes, using tongs to gently turn skewers without having them tear. 5. Then take skewers off the grill, drizzle with the sriracha cilantro mayo, and enjoy!

BRINGING YOUR OWN WINE by anthony geary

Bringing wine to restaurants has become an all too common occurrence in the modern restaurant world. Guests no longer have to visit one specific place to drink their favorite bottles. Thanks to the internet, even the most obscure bottles can be obtained with enough money, and wine apps allow customers to be savvy about pricing and ratings. However, diners bringing their own wine can be a problem. Wine is a huge part of mosts restaurants’ bottom lines, and although a corkage fee is usually charged, it’s a fraction of what people would normally spend if they bought from the menu. For these reasons, follow these social cues. 1) Don't bring a wine under $30. Chances are there is something on the wine list under $50. So if you bring a cheap wine and then paying a corkage fee, you're actually spending more money to drink inferior wine. 2) If you bring wine, share it. It's always a good gesture to offer the sommelier/server/chef a few sips. People in the hospitality industry are always trying to better their skills and understanding, and sometimes, especially nice bottles are out of the budget for those serving the wine. Be generous, and the corkage fee might be waived. 3) If you bring a bottle, buy a bottle. I'm not saying get drunk, but most restaurants

waive the corkage fee if you buy a bottle. Establishments want you to come in and spend money. If you want your favorite restaurant to remain in business, support them. 4) Older bottles deserve an additional tip. If you bring in an old bottle, and it's properly opened and even decanted, this should be appreciated. Correctly opening old wine is a skill, and if you don't want a glass of sediment the next time you dine at your favorite establishment, tip appropriately. 5) Don't bring wine to a tasting menu. Unless you already have done the tasting menu before and are savvy enough to pair your own food, don't compromise your dining

experience. People work hard and spend a lot of time pairing food and wine. Let a restaurant deliver a proper experience. 6) Magnums and large formats count as multiple bottles. Don't try to scam the system. This makes you look cheap. 7) Bringing your own wine is a privilege. Keep in mind you are bringing in an outside beverage. Nobody would consider bringing in a bottle of vodka. Some states don't allow people to bring their own wine, and every place has their own policy. Don't be a pest, and if there is a limit on corkage, respect it.

ANYONE FEEL LIKE

MY MESSY M M LIFE

WITH KATELYN & THE #CRUMBLYCREW

The Tiny Tracker: St. Louis is full of the most amazing mompreneurs. I met Lauren Rehme Anderson at the Ladue Holiday Mart last December and was blown away by her amazing product, The Tiny Tracker. It is not only a newborn memory book, but also a calendar for tracking feedings, growth and development. It comes with essential parenting tips and won a Babylist award. You can have one custom monogrammed for the perfect shower gift. This beautiful planner for new moms will help you document the sweetest moments and also beat mom brain. I am such a fan. E ANDERSON PHOTO: LAUREN REHM

Rocking Bassinet: I used a simple Moses basket for my first three kids. It worked well for us, but I noticed a lot of my friends getting the SNOO and wondered if I should try one.

This last pregnancy, I was given the 4moms Mamaroo bassinet, and it’s wonderful! It’s also less than half the price of the SNOO, but there is an option to rent a SNOO for a more affordable monthly fee. I would say a rocking bassinet definitely makes life easier for a new mom. Lovevery Play Gym: The hype is real. This mat is so adorable and full of brain stimulating details for your baby. DockATot: If you only buy one thing, get this. It has been a lifesaver. The DockATot is a flat pillow with sides that your baby can safely lounge, play and have tummy time on. It’s been wonderful; I wish I could buy it for every new mom. They even make a toddler version!

they need an updated list of essentials for newborn babies? I just had my fourth child three weeks ago, and I still feel lost on what I need and don’t need, so I took to Instagram and asked my super mom friends for their must-have baby products. Even if you aren’t expecting, this is a great list to save for shower gifts!

Noodle & Boo: This is the leader in luxury maternity and baby skin care for eczema-prone and sensitive skin. It smells heavenly, and once you try it, you will never go back to your old baby bath products. You can buy locally at Saks Fifth Avenue or online. BirthStory: I’ve known Ashley Becker for years. She’s a brilliant photographer and tells beautiful stories in all she does. If you want someone to document your birth experience, look no further. She is just a wonderful person! Visit theashleybecker.com. Maternity Photos with Rae Marcel: I swore I would never do these, but then I got the opportunity to do them with Rae. She’s new in town and, in my opinion, takes maternity to a whole new level. As someone who has never embraced pregnancy, Rae made me feel like a beauty queen, Beyonce style. I highly recommend her. Find her @raemarcel and at raemarcelstudios.com.

Haakaa Breast Pump: Yep, you need it. This will save you hours at the pump. While nursing on one side, you simply attach the HaaKaa to the other side, and it catches all of the milk that would have leaked into a nursing pad. You leave a feeding session with a bottle of milk to store for later use. Doona Car Seat & Stroller: I have never been one to shell out a lot for a stroller. In fact, I used my first $200 stroller for almost eight years. This is my first time with the Doona stroller, and it’s definitely worth the investment. It is a car seat that pops into a stroller. No more lugging the pumpkin seat, no more adaptors and no more transferring. Even my husband thinks this stroller is amazing and worth the money—that’s saying a lot!

U N D E R S TA N D I N G Postpartum

Depression

By Julia M. Johnson When an infant joins your family, it’s natural to experience moments of joy, growth and discovery. But for some women, having a baby also introduces unexpected mental health struggles, known as postpartum depression, which can significantly affect a mother’s quality of life.

Postpartum depression

can be mild to severe, taking a toll on both mental and physical health by causing a new mother to experience feelings of sadness and disconnection from her baby, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health. Symptoms vary and can include feelings of restlessness, hopelessness, low energy or motivation, memory problems, fatigue, withdrawal from friends and family, lack of interest or focus, disordered sleeping or eating, headaches, stomach problems, pain and harmful thoughts. Sudden changes in the body’s levels of estrogen and progesterone during and after pregnancy are likely the culprits behind postpartum depression, as well as thyroid hormone activity. Women suffering from postpartum depression also may experience fears and concerns that aren’t normal for them, like a sense of being overwhelmed or inadequate, doubts about their ability to be

New mothers should consult a health care professional if: ■ Feelings of sadness begin up to a year after childbirth and don’t subside after two weeks

What does an evaluation look like?

How is the condition treated?

■ Get a regular amount of rest. Try to sleep when the baby is sleeping.

■ Screening may include a questionnaire about feelings, symptoms and experiences. ■ Blood tests can determine whether an underactive thyroid gland is a factor. ■ Other tests may be conducted to rule out additional causes.

■ Individual psychotherapy is an important part of treatment. It can help new mothers come to terms with their feelings and experiences and set goals to solve problems.

■ Ask others for help with daily activities to avoid feeling overwhelmed. ■ Take time away from home to unwind or visit friends.

■ Normal activities are not as enjoyable as they used to be

■ Talk about post-birth feelings with sympathetic friends, relatives and other mothers with similar experiences.

■ They feel unable to perform personal care routines like sleeping, eating and bathing ■ They feel unable to care for the baby ■ They have thoughts of harming themselves or the baby

It’s extremely important for women experiencing postpartum depression to consult a doctor and create a plan to address it. A less common but related condition known as postpartum psychosis—which usually develops in the first week after delivery and can include severe confusion, hallucination, rapid mood swings, thoughts of harm, paranoia, agitation and reckless behavior—is considered a medical emergency and must be treated immediately.

Activities that can help women address the condition:

■ Depressive symptoms become more intense over time

■ It’s difficult to observe normal schedules at home or work

a good mother, grief over the significant change in their lives, stress about normal routines and loss of confidence. Mothers may be at greater risk if they have had a history of certain mental health conditions, a lack of support from family and friends, difficulty breastfeeding, problems with earlier pregnancies, relationship or money difficulties, substance use or other issues.

■ Take part in a support group recommended by a doctor or other health care professional. ■ Don’t use alcohol or recreational drugs. ■ If possible, try to avoid other major life changes like moving or changing jobs while dealing with postpartum depression.

■ Antidepressant medication may be prescribed. Some antidepressants can be used safely during breastfeeding. ■ Family or relationship therapy may be helpful as well. ■ Experts emphasize that postpartum depression is not a character flaw or sign of weakness, and new mothers are encouraged not to feel shame or blame themselves for it. Postpartum depression is a recognized medical condition that requires treatment to ensure a return to a good quality of life.

Wedding Season Is always & forever…

BY STEPHANIE WALLACE

the truth about

ALOPECiA

Nouveau Medspa is your

While best known right now for being at the center of a headline-grabbing controversy, alopecia affects millions of men and women in the United States. We reached out to Kimberly Brown, a SLUCare physician assistant with the department of dermatology, to shed some light on the sensitive subject. PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT KIMBERLY BROWN TREATS A PATIENT AT THE SLUCARE HAIR LOSS CLINIC.

C OMM ON T YPE S O F ALO PE CIA

“Alopecia is a general term for all hair loss,” Brown explains. “People hear the term a lot, but they often don’t realize that not all alopecia is the same.”

◀ Androgenetic: More commonly known as male- and female-pattern baldness, this type of hair loss occurs with aging. It is related to hormones called androgens. Increased levels of androgens in hair follicles can lead to a shorter cycle of hair growth and shorter and thinner strands. For men, it usually begins with thinning around the crown of the head. For women, thinning usually starts through the part with the front hairline unaffected. This is the most common form of hair loss, impacting millions of Americans over the age of 65. However, Brown notes it can begin affecting people in their 20s.

◀ Alopecia areata: “This refers to hair loss due to an autoimmune condition,” Brown says. “It’s what

people most commonly think of when they hear the word alopecia.” It often takes the form of hair loss in isolated patches around the scalp, usually about the size and shape of a coin. It also can occur throughout the body, including eyebrows, eyelashes, other facial hair and body hair. Unlike androgenetic alopecia, this type of hair loss does not become more common with age.

◀ Traction: This is hair loss due to physical pulling and strain on the hair follicles. It is often caused by

tight hairstyles that cause continuous damage, such as braids, dreadlocks and ponytails. It can also be due to tight headwear like helmets, chemical relaxers or hair extensions. “You aren’t likely to experience traction alopecia if you go on vacation and get your hair braided once,” Brown notes. “It takes time and continuous stress on the hair for there to be a noticeable impact.”

WH EN TO SEE A D O C TO R

Everyone loses around a 100 hairs a day on average, so some stands in your hair brush or on your pillow aren’t an immediate cause for concern. Hair loss becomes an issue when you shed more hair follicles than you regrow. Brown suggests seeking the attention of a doctor if you notice thinning or bald spots. ”Since there are so many causes of hair loss, there are several different treatments a medical professional might recommend,” she says. “These can include medication or injections to treat pattern baldness or autoimmune conditions.” Other common treatments include surgical transplants and laser therapy. Brown urges people to consult a medical professional as soon as they realize their hair is thinning. “In most cases, I see patients who have been experiencing hair loss for around a decade, so the problem has gotten pretty extensive,” she says. “The sooner you seek an evaluation, the more effective treatment will be. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to see positive results.”

THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST STUNNING HOMES I HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE TO LIST!” - TED WIGHT

570 W. MONROE AVE., KIRKWOOD by stephanie wallace

from the homeowner »

In real estate, it’s all about location, location, location, and the current homeowners knew they couldn’t pass up 570 W. Monroe Ave., nestled on a little less than an acre across from Kirkwood Park. The existing house didn’t suit their needs, so they used the foundation to create a completely new, one-of-kind home. Now, a little less than a year after the construction’s completion, they’re ready to find a new family to enjoy the unique, thoughtfully designed property.

What do you like about the home’s location? We love Kirkwood because it’s such a wonderful community that’s not too big or too small. It’s very walkable— in fact, we can walk downtown and enjoy all the great shops and restaurants. Kirkwood Park is right across the street. HOMEWORK

DEAR HOMEWORK,

We would like to add an appropriately styled porch to the west facing, front facade of our home so that we have a defined sitting area where we can lounge and watch our kids play on the front lawn. Any tweaks to the landscaping you also can suggest would be helpful. Thanks so much, —PINING FOR A PORCH

DEAR PINING FOR A PORCH,

Since your existing front elevation is already asymmetrical, I suggest adding the porch to the right, somewhat blander, side of the composition. I would emphasize the front door with a shallow arched front facing gable. I also used doubled up narrow columns and a standing seam copper roof on the new porch and the existing box bay window. In addition, I have made minor changes to the front door, mailbox and arched vent over the door. The landscape now features low evergreen hedges that provide a bit of privacy to the porch, but also allow the full length of the windows to stay visible. A semi-circular flower bed provides a place of pride for your religious sculpture. To my eyes the presentation now looks the way it was always supposed to. Hopefully, you will find these suggestions helpful. Thanks for asking, —HOMEWORK

PICTURE THIS… UPDATES TO THE BATH by lauren rechan

I WANT TO SHARE THE NEWEST WAYS to make your bathroom feel updated and fresh. Bathrooms should be

relaxing, efficient, light-filled and beautiful, but many people don’t make these spaces special, instead just going for the basics. Here are some ideas to help you take your baths to the next level.

I find bath lighting to be the least inspiring of all fixtures, but these slim accents are effective and attractive. Don’t forget to add a beautiful ceiling fixture in your baths.

Introducing antiques into a bath is a great way to add warmth and age.

Brass continues to make its move over polished nickel in the bath.

Hanging the commode gives you a sleek look and no messy curves to clean.

The combination of dark wood paired with creamy marble is beating out white on white in many high end baths.

As with all interiors, playing with color is very in! Just as in the kitchen, bathroom designs are incorporating more unique storage options.

An ongoing trend is removing all legs from the bath floor. Teak is emerging as an indoor option for shower floors as seen in this wet room concept.

Mid-century is alive and well in the bathroom!

The European concept of a wet room can be both a beautiful and space-efficient approach to bath planning.

This new tile shape, called Picket, is a cross between retro and modern.

Bold and geometric tile patterns on walls and shower walls make a big impact.

FROM THE

BLOG OF... MID-CENTURY MODERN DESIGN TIPS

DESIGN: KEVIN DUMAIS | PHOTO: JOSHUA MCHUGH

DESIGN: CLAIRE ZINNECKER | PHOTO: MOLLY CULVER

One of the most popular interior design styles in history, mid-century modern (MCM) blends a subtle-yet-futuristic look with clean lines and open layouts, which come together with muted tones and pops of retro-inspired colors. Most popular in the ’50s and ’60s (hence “mid-century”), we’re seeing a revival of this look, elevating this style to a fresh, modern look. What is MCM interior design? Heavily influenced by the Bauhaus movement and the works of Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier, MCM interior design focuses on clean lines, sleek curves and angles, simple futuristic forms, pops of retro-inspired colors and abstract art. It rose in popularity post-WWII when the need for homes drastically increased as soldiers returned home and wanted to start their families. Thanks to a shortage of wood during this era, the use of steel and other readily available materials made their way into design. There also was an explosive push toward modernizing the interior look and feel of the American home. Gone were the days of elaborate, ornate pieces— sleek and simple forms started to dominate the scene, combined with a fusion of indoor with outdoor through a mix of steel and natural materials like wood and stone.

DESIGN: JESSICA HELGERSON | PHOTO: AARON LEITZ

What are the main characteristics of MCM? Key elements of today’s take on MCM include: ■ Taking a minimalist design approach by using simple forms, including curves and geometric shapes ■ Using shiny brass and other metals, often in the form of small details ■ Mixing manmade and natural materials, mainly wood and stone ■ Combining natural hues with pops of vintage-inspired colors How can people bring MCM into their home? The most important thing when introducing any style into your home is balance, which is essentially the nature of MCM. ■ Find your statement piece. Choose a MCM-inspired statement and let that be the inspiration when selecting other pieces for your space. ■ Strike a balance. Truly authentic MCM pieces are versatile, blending beautifully with any style. Whether pairing MCM chairs with your modern sofa or a vintage sideboard with your dining table, you can use this style of furniture to make a unique statement, whatever your taste. ■ Incorporate elements of the style. Using minimal window treatments, incorporating simple forms and leaning into retro-inspired colors, styles or pieces are all great ways to introduce the MCM style to any space. If you are not ready to fully commit to bringing this style in with furniture, art is another excellent way to dip your foot into the MCM world. ■ Explore lighting options. The playful chandeliers inspired by this style are a fun and interesting way to introduce a MCM-inspired feel into your home. Bubble chandeliers are some of our favorite lighting options and can be blended in with many designs that lean modern. ■ It’s all about visual impact. Ultimately, achieving this look for your home is about creating visual impact with your selections. You can blend elements of MCM with several other styles; it’s all about intention so that you’re left with a compelling, interesting design.

NEIGHBORHOOD If it’s been said once, it’s been said a thousand times: St. Louis is a city of neighborhoods. With 79 unique ones and many beautiful suburbs, each vibrant community has its own fascinating history and unique shops, restaurants and attractions. We can only scratch the surface of all the StL has to offer, but we asked our contributors to share some of their favorite places to visit across the metro.

■ Central West End

■ Cheltenham

■ Chesterfield

The Central West End is full of life. Its tree-lined streets are home to lively restaurants and bars, unique shops and historic residences, some that date back to the 1904 World’s Fair. Just a stone’s throw from Forest Park, the vibrant area has an energy all its own.

This neighborhood traces its roots back to 1798. Named after the city in England, it became synonymous with fire brick production in the 19th century. Historically, it’s also been a center of education, serving as home to Forest Park University and Kirkwood Seminary, the first university in the U.S. to be chartered solely for women. Today, the neighborhood is full of bars, restaurants, coffee shops and parks.

The largest city in west St. Louis County, Chesterfield is known for its shopping, but you don’t want to miss its wide variety of dining options or unique annual events, such as the River City Bluegrass Festival, Chesterfield Wine & Jazz Festival and Pedal the Cause. ‘Head west’ on Hwy. 40 to see all the community has to offer.

Today, the area is known for luxurious neighborhoods and avenues dotted with mature trees.
