The Clayton gallery hosted an opening for its new Henri Matisse exhibit, which includes lesser-known examples of the famous French artist’s work. The exhibit, which runs through June 1, includes 51 drawings, lithographs, etchings, drypoints, aquatints and linocuts. Along with Pablo Picasso, Matisse is considered one of the leaders of early 20th-century art.

in my mind that my future would include children, even though the number might have changed slightly over the years. (There was a time I thought anything less than five was just no fun.) I spent countless days playing house and taking care of my Kid Sister doll and other stuffed animals. I will admit my childhood imagination never could have prepared me for the real job: the worries, the exhaustion, the pride … but most importantly, the purest form of love there is. Every mom can relate to the emotional journey that is both elating and challenging at the same time. With Mother’s Day almost here, I’m sure we all know a woman who deserves to be recognized for their endless support, guidance and love, whether it’s your own mom, your grandmother, a family member or a friend. In our special feature Double Duty, we highlight three local moms who balance busy careers with an equally busy home life. And while they all admit there are challenges along the way, like any good mom, they constantly strive for the best for their families. Our health column this issue, Wonder Woman, recognizes the pressure and expectations that all women place on themselves, especially those taking care of a family. We need to give ourselves a break! Be mindful, eat healthy, read a book, exercise—you deserve to be your best self; it benefits everyone in your family. I became a much happier parent when I started prioritizing my commitment to workout, eat right and live in the moment. Yes, this mom thing is a lot of work. Yes, my schedule is nonstop. But it’s all worth it. When my son and I get into our nightly game about who loves who more or when he surprises me with breakfast in bed; when my daughter excitedly helps me cook dinner or asks to run with me because it’s one of ‘our things,’ I always cherish the moment and am so very grateful that my dreams came true.

A FIFTH-GRADE BOY WAS BEING RIDICULED FOR WEARING HIS MOM’S JEANS
to school, and three siblings were sharing a single toothbrush. It was real stories like these that put a face on poverty and motivated Doug Pitt to take action. He wanted to help the thousands of kids who go to school hungry, suffering and embarrassed. In 2008, the businessman and philanthropist started Care to Learn in his hometown of Springfield, Missouri, and now, there are 33 chapters across the state. The nonprofit is dedicated to meeting the health, hunger and hygiene needs of underserved children so every student can be successful. Care to Learn creates funds that provide students with everything from asthma inhalers and lunch to toiletries and clothing. “The original plan was simply to find the kids and help them,” Pitt says. “I’m thrilled with the growth we’ve experienced. It means we get to help more students.” Each chapter is started with support from the school district and community leaders to ensure sustainability. Pitt notes that many St. Louis residents stepped up to help grow the local chapters. “St. Louis is an amazing spot,” he says. “I’ve been blown away by the participation here. People and businesses want to be personally involved. It’s a testament to the city.” The organization currently partners with four school districts in the St. Louis region but is ready to expand, according to regional director Annie Mayrose. “We want to continually grow and help more students,” she says. She also notes the program is adaptable and is currently working to address regional issues like an increase in transient students. The organization ensures students receive help without feeling stigmatized or being required to meet certain qualifications, which Mayrose notes cause some children to fall through the cracks. “I was immediately drawn to the organization because anonymity is of the utmost importance, and there is no red tape,” says board member Jessica Herschend. “The ability to meet needs quickly while also preserving a child’s selfesteem makes Care to Learn unique and incredibly effective.” The organization is working on building local awareness. Sanaz Collins, board member and vice president of marketing at Reliance Bank, says she didn’t realize the severity of the issues addressed by the nonprofit until the bank sponsored one of its events. “I didn’t really think of the connection between children’s unmet basic needs and education before,” she says. “I’m very grateful to be involved with a group of people passionate about making a difference.” To share its mission, the nonprofit recently created a young professionals group called Friends of Care to Learn. “We don’t have an age limit; it’s a group open to any volunteers who want to give their time and energy,” Mayrose says. To help raise both funds and awareness, Care to Learn is throwing a gala June 1. Collins and Herschend are co-chairs of The Great Gatsby-themed event. Herschend says guests can expect to be transported back to the 1920s. Music is provided by Miss Jubilee, and there even will be a speakeasy bar—accessible with a password, of course! It will be held at The Coronado, and the nonprofit hopes to make the most of the venue’s capacity. “I’m excited to fill the room with new faces that have yet to hear about the great work of Care to Learn,” Herschend says. “Increasing awareness is one of our main goals because once you know us, you won’t forget us!”

DOWNTOWN 〉〉
Jane: “What do you want to do tonight?” Dick: ‘I dunno … movie?” Jane: “You’re no fun. Hey! Let’s go dancing, like at a nightclub!” Dick: “Great idea, babe. Just hold on a sec while I grab a handgun and discreetly secure it somewhere on my person …” That probably wasn’t a discussion held—not once, but twice, in the past few months—as couples prepared for a night out grooving to the DJs at MOOD Lounge at 20th and Locust streets. After two recent incidents involving gunfire (several people were wounded), the joint might just as well be called FOUL MOOD Lounge. No nincompoop ever should have a gun, of course. But nincompoops get their hands on guns anyhow. Many nincompoops buy guns legally, because who could check thoroughly enough to determine a gun permit should never have been issued at all? (Some get their guns back from dad, even if authorities confiscate one from the son after an incident outside the White House.) Then, there’s the gun show loophole … and on and on and on. Gunfire erupted outside MOOD twice—once in March, once in April—despite the heaviest police presence one could imagine: HQ for The Lou’s men and women in blue is less than a block away! Several glass bricks shot out of the curved wall on either side of the doorway were swiftly repaired, as was a window in the dentist’s office across the street—the slug was found between the waiting room couch cushions. Now, a police car is parked right across the street from MOOD, a camera on top aimed at the front door. Notably, this is one of the quietest, safest parts of the city during the day, what with police HQ within spittin’ distance. I hear nincompoops usually only come out at night.

Municipal League (MML) has honored Brentwood for its technology to improve public safety via lowcost GPS tracking devices in all public vehicles. (Hey, if bike-sharing companies can do it—see item below on LimeBike—why not official vehicles?) Brentwood is a 2018 MML Innovation Award winner in the Member’s Choice category, which is a big deal. Other MML awards are based on city population size, but a Member’s Choice award results from members voting for their favorite project, regardless of city size. The MML awards honor projects unfolding in communities across the Show-Me State that enhance quality of life. In June 2016, Brentwood partnered with Geocompile LLC to develop a data collection and analysis system that crunches data from the GPS units. Since implementation, 100 percent of the city is patrolled regularly; Type I criminal activity has dropped; at least two major crimes have been stopped in progress; and citizens have reported a notable increase in police visibility, particularly in residential neighborhoods. The system is completely cloud-based. What’s not to love about any and all of that? (I, for one, hadn’t heard of Missouri Municipal League. Full disclosure: Born a Yankee, I moved to the Midwest from Atlanta.) Here’s the official skinny: Founded in 1934 to provide a united voice for municipalities, MML serves more than 650 municipalities with training, resources and legislative advocacy for local government success.
TOWER GROVE SOUTH 〉〉
My first LimeBike ride was a bust. The adage, “It’s just like riding a bicycle,” didn’t hold true for me, at first. Driving through Tower Grove South, I spotted my very first LimeBike standing outside, of all places, A&M Bicycle at Arsenal and Morganford, and decided to pull over and give it a whirl. It was a snap to download the app with my cellphone, which automatically unlocks the back wheel. I was up and rolling in a jiffy, but wobbly as heck, I kept pushing my feet on the pavement to slow down or stop. I soon realized they have hand brakes for that. I noticed a few LimeBikes standing around on street corners and at the ready in Tower Grove Park, plus a smiling, laughing couple riding a pair of the green two-wheelers along a trail. They’d have been great in an ad for the bike-sharing concept. Me, not so much.
Before going far at all, I suddenly remembered my wife needed the car. So I stopped, picked up the bicycle, turned it around and rode back to lock ’er up—without ever leaving the sidewalk or crossing an intersection. A message popped right up on my cellphone. First part, a fib: ‘Great ride!’ In green, it displayed my exact route, which resembled the line a 3-year-old might trace over the line a drunk tried to walk. But I rode 994 feet, burned 13 calories and prevented an infinitesimal amount of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere! Then I drove home. The next day—Monday, April 23—the LimeBike app told me I could walk 1.1 miles from our U. City condo for one of the 750 machines that had hit the streets just the Monday before. LimeBike is the first of two companies to offer bike-share services in the StL. The other, Chinese company Ofo, was expected by this writing to have started operating here with its 750 yellow machines. Rides come cheap: LimeBike is $2 an hour, Ofo just $1. Only one real safety problem— who carries a helmet with them anywhere, anyhow? A company rep on his way from Kiener Plaza to City Hall was wearing a knit hat.
FOREST PARK 〉〉
We’ll be able to do it standing up beginning Friday (May 4) at The Boathouse in Forest Park. Why, shame on you! We’ll be able to paddle standing up, silly, on one of those way-cool stand-up paddleboards. (My word!) Anyhow, if you feel you’re somewhat unbalanced, you may also do it sitting down, now in a canoe or kayak as well as one of the popular paddleboats. Professional canoe and kayak outfitter Big Muddy Adventures is kicking off service via Boathouse Paddle Co., a partnership with the City of St. Louis Parks Department and The Sugarfire Smokehouse Group. (So, what? We’ll be able to order barbecue in a boat?) Boathouse Paddle Co. will operate the dock, offering the aforementioned watercraft for rent daily from 11 a.m. to sunset. Group reservations will be accepted for 10 or more boats; all other rentals will be first-come, first-served. But, do you feel that your scintillating conversation (read: romantic interlude) might be interrupted by the sun going down? Details on additional programming— such as SUP yoga, kayak classes, guided tours and moonlight paddles—will be announced later this month. (What’s SUP? ‘Stand-up Paddleboard’ yoga, that’s what’s SUP.)

the world’s largest chess piece, a 20-foot-tall wooden king that has checkmated a piece in Belgium, which is now the world’s second-largest piece. Our piece was fashioned from African mahogany and treated with tung oil for moisture resistance. In 2014, the 16-foot-tall Belgian piece had checked a piece formerly in front of our HOF, a 14-foot king that was once the world’s largest (a metal plaque refers to that erstwhile piece, which was about a giraffe’s height). Sounds like we’ve engaged in quite the match with the Belgians. (But, bona fide chess players are already thinking three moves ahead: What’s the next thing after the thing that comes after the chess piece certain to follow this one? Could one eventually challenge the Gateway Arch? Um, no.) Fans of cool stuff are only grateful that this stunning piece is in the CWE. And, like they tend not to ever say at the conclusion of a hardfought—or ‘excruciatingly contemplated’—chess
match: That’s a winner! Steve Stenger, StL county exec, unveiled the piece with Rex Sinquefield, the man with very deep pockets instrumental in the hall’s move to the CWE from Miami. (It makes sense that Sinquefield helped remove the tarp, but why the county executive and not Lyda Krewson, mayor of St. Louis? Perhaps it’s an infantile, politicaltype squabble over something like privatization of the airport. Perhaps not. But Sinquefield is all
gung-ho about privatization. Krewson is like ‘meh.’) Two large dudes engaged in a mighty match on the large outdoor board were dwarfed by the gigantic king looming above, as though warning it would crush the dude who made the next wrong move. But probably not. To gawk at the piece, or to try your skill on the outdoor chessboard, go just east of the intersection at Maryland and Euclid to 4652 Maryland Ave. You can’t miss it. Just don’t hit it. &

Does an affair matter in divorce? Stange Law Firm, PC
With the advent of no fault divorce, many think that fault no longer matters. As it relates to divorce, the viewpoint is that an affair does not matter at all. Some think that courts will look at it and give it no weight. In the end, the view is everything is going to be divided in half anyway. Child support and maintenance is going to be what it is. And in terms of child custody, many think an affair is irrelevant. Is this correct? The reality is that this viewpoint is not accurate in many states. It is true that to get divorced, parties do not have to show fault for a divorce to be granted. Prior to the advent of no fault divorce, parties would have to show fault like an affair, abandonment, emotional cruelty, violence or some other fault of some kind to get divorced. But with no fault divorce, that is no
longer required. The exact language varies by state, but generally speaking, parties simply have to show that a marriage is irretrievably broken to get divorced. However in terms of marital property and debt division, and spousal maintenance (alimony), many states still allow the conduct of the parties as one of the factors in terms of making that determination. States like Missouri and Kansas fall into that category. However, Illinois excludes fault as a consideration by statute. But in terms of child custody, an affair could still have an effect in most states, as long as it has a bearing on the best interests of the children. In cases where an affair can be pointed to having a negative impact on the children and their custody or parenting time with either parent, an affair could still be looked at for custody and parenting time determination. Thus, parties who think an affair will have no effect whatsoever are potentially missing the mark. It is true that many judges
will give little weight to an affair (even in states that allow it to be considered). At the same time, an affair is not completely irrelevant in every case. In some cases, an affair can ultimately impact the result of the case. This is especially true when the affair had a financial impact on the marital estate. Stange Law Firm, PC limits their practice to family law matters including divorce, child custody, child support, paternity, guardianship, adoption, juvenile matters, collaborative law and other domestic relation matters. Stange Law Firm, PC gives clients 24/7 access to their case through a secured online case tracker found on the website. They also give their clients their cell phone numbers. MENTAL ILLNESS IS NOT SOMETHING MANY
people feel comfortable talking about, unless of course you’re me and tend to overshare! So, to kick off May, which is Mental Health Awareness month, I thought I would take you down my crazy little rabbit hole. Maybe it will make you a bit more sensitive with things you say. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the theme for the month is #curestigma, so let’s try. I’ve always found my weirdly wired brain pretty entertaining and hope you do, too. I have obsessive compulsive disorder, OCD for short. No, I do not repeatedly wash my hands, touch door knobs or perform other ritual-like tasks, but some people do. Instead, I have hyper-focused, repetitive thoughts. Here’s the good news: If you are an employer, you want me as an employee because, regardless of the problem, I will solve it because I can’t stop thinking about it until I do. It is impossible for me to turn my mind off. I never forget to do things, I remember people’s names and yes. I am very organized. But it is exhausting because when you can’t fix something, you worry. I often tell my kids not to worry about anything because I worry enough for the entire family. When I hear someone say, “Oh, I am a bit OCD” while fluffing a pillow or straightening a picture frame, I want to punch them because it diminishes the struggle people with OCD have each day. My mind has always been like this, but I didn’t realize everyone’s wasn’t until I was in my 20s. I sought medical attention, and through a combination of therapy and medication, I function just like normal people. But there is a stigma associated with problems in your brain. People who are trying to be helpful (I mean, they can’t purposely be trying to annoy me, can they?) often suggest I just learn how to relax. Or take up a new tapping therapy their brother’s sister’s cousin once did. Or eliminate gluten, sugar and all green foods from my diet. I get it, you think you can fix me, but you can’t. I am the way I am and if I wasn’t, well … • I would not be able to sit down and write a column each and every week about the most random topics. • I would not be able to find humor in situations that can be painful, like a parent’s death or the crazy world of politics. • I would not be the go-to person for friends and family for every disease they think they might have because I have had them all—well, not really, but I’ve researched them as if I did. • I would not be the organizer of family gatherings, address lists and birthday reminders since I keep all of those details stored away in my head and feel compelled to share them. My weirdly wired brain is what makes me, me and when I lay awake at night with too many thoughts in my head, I try to remember OCD is not necessarily the gift that keeps on giving, but more like an itch that occasionally needs to be scratched. If you know someone who struggles with OCD, anxiety, depression or bipolar disorder, please remember that they aren’t their disease. Their disease is just part of who they are. Too preachy this week? I will try to do better next week. I always do. CONTACT PATTY AT PHANNUM@TOWNANDSTYLE.COM.

Town & Style wanted someone to explain complicated technology in an understandable way. That continues to be my goal: keep it simple. With that in mind, here are my thoughts on protecting your personal information in today’s digital world.
➧ Always keep in mind that
Facebook isn’t the only digital app or device that passes on information about you to advertisers. If you think leaving Facebook for Instagram is the answer, consider the fact that Instagram and WhatsApp are owned by Facebook. Your browser knows who you are and provides features to share your browser settings across devices. You’re prompted to create a username and sign in to collect your browsing behavior. Google provides businesses the ability to track user behavior on websites, which is used to improve your use of a website and make sure it’s easy to make a purchase, find the information you need or register for an event.
➧ You need to decide what
information you want protected, like social security number, driver’s license number, passport details, and credit card and bank account information. Don’t input that information on any site where you don’t understand the security. Make sure a website’s URL (web address) shows a green lock or the word ‘secure’ next to it. If one of those isn’t present, do not give out your personal information.
letting your devices track your location. When you track your kids, that data is stored and aggregated. These behaviors are valuable, and companies analyze them to understand what you do. The same concerns were raised when credit and debit card companies started collecting details on your purchases. Your personal buying behavior is used to help advertisers target you. Apps are created every day that use your location to show you deals in the area. While we might love getting this information, it is only possible because of the personal location data we share.
9814 Clayton Road • St. louiS, Mo 63124 • 314.994.0606 •
www.SignoftheaRRow.CoM
➧ Finally, be thoughtful about what you share. Don’t forward a chain message via Facebook Messenger. When an app asks you to login using your Facebook or Google account, decide if you really want to share your information with that app or company. Clicking on a quiz, game or predictor in Facebook will collect your information and use it in some way, so you might want to especially avoid these.
Play for a Great Cause! Benefiting Presenting Sponsor
Protecting your information has become trickier as technology advances. Always read the terms and conditions that you often quickly click ‘agree’ to without thinking of the implications. You never know when you have just agreed to let a company use your information that isn’t in your best interest.
&
➧ If people tracking your
behavior is concerning, stop using location apps or SHEILA BURKETT IS AN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY EXPERT AND CEO OF SPRY DIGITAL, AN INTERACTIVE DESIGN AGENCY DELIVERING SMART DIGITAL SOLUTIONS. STUDENT STANDOUTS by julia m. johnson
WINNING STROKES 〉〉
Swimmer Claire Lin has been making waves in her sport since she was little, and she plans to continue doing so at Harvard University this fall. The Kirkwood High School senior says she first took to the pool at about age 3. She joined a competitive club a few years later, and says that was when she got serious about the sport. “It’s when I started viewing swimming from a more athletic standpoint, and not just as something fun to do,” she says. Claire says her top events are the 200-meter IM and the 100-meter backstroke, breast stroke and freestyle. “I spend a lot of time practicing all four,” she notes. “We had a good season this year.” Her team placed well at invitational and state events in 2018, and she helped set a new school relay record at this year’s state meet. “That was exciting,” she recalls. “My teammates and I have had so many grueling practices together; it was great to get to the state meet and see it all pay off. It’s my senior year, so there have been lots of nostalgic ‘last’ moments, but we also have had some great firsts.” Claire says she is looking forward to hitting the pool with her new Harvard teammates. “It’s a very good Division 1 team,” she says. “But swimming is just one thing that attracted me to the school. The academic programs are really strong, and the community and student body seem very diverse. I’m so excited to meet people with all kinds of different viewpoints, learn from them and offer my own perspectives.”
She is considering a major in environmental engineering or neuroscience. “I’ve had an interest in sustainability since I was very young,” she says. “It really manifested itself my junior year when I took AP biology. I realized how many interesting and important fields of study are related to that. I’d love to work on new sustainable energy resources and clean water access for populations that don’t have it.” Claire works plenty of other extracurricular activities into her schedule as well. She plays cello for her school and the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra and has been a member of the Missouri All-State Orchestra for three years. She’s a designer and proofs editor for the high school’s award-winning yearbook, The Pioneer, and loves musical theater and dance, having performed in Beauty and the Beast and Seussical at The Muny. “Swimming has taught me so much,” Claire says of her signature sport. “I love that it’s both a personal and team effort. You have to take initiative for yourself in practice, and how you place in a meet reflects the work you’ve put in as an individual. But the relays are about encouraging your teammates and helping them win. We have a unique team bond and are always there for each other.”

BRAIN POWER 〉〉
Ladue Horton Watkins High School junior Akhil Kondepudi is still deciding on a college major and career path, but he already has an advanced understanding of the human mind and the science surrounding it. This spring, Akhil won the 2018 U.S.A. Brain Bee, a neuroscience competition held at the University of Maryland. It’s a prestigious contest, pitting high school students from 54 Brain Bee chapters against each other to prove their knowledge of human intelligence, memory, the senses, neurological disease and more. “I was nervous when I first arrived, but I became more relaxed as I talked to people there,” Akhil says. “It was a great experience for me.” The event took place over a three-day weekend and was divided into six sections with specific study resources for each. “I also used a couple of textbooks, MRI slides and other sources to prepare, and Washington University students helped me study some of the harder topics,” Akhil says. “The win felt great. Lots of people congratulated me, my family was really proud, and I was happy that all of my hard work paid off.” Akhil’s big victory means that he’ll make a fiveday trip to the World Brain Bee Championship in Berlin this July, which he will begin studying for when school gets out. He also won an eight-week research fellowship to work in a Washington University neuroscience lab this summer. “I will be pretty busy,” he says. “Getting ready for the national competition was like a full-time job, so studying for the international one will be, too.” The young scientist participates in other knowledge competitions as well, and he belongs to math and science clubs at school. “I like volunteering with other students in those subjects,” he says. “I have an analytical mind, and I enjoy using it to help others understand.”

Louie, the mascot for the St. Louis Blues, paid a special visit to Ms. Harbison’s first grade class at the Kirkwood school to recognize Natalie Chen and her classmates for participating in the team’s Bookworms reading program. Over the past several months, students throughout the St. Louis area have logged reading time. Chen not only had the most minutes in her class with a total of 9,650, but she also was the top first-grade reader in the entire program!

During the school’s annual Ladue Dance Marathon, students raised more than $80,000 for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals—almost $36,000 more than last year. Over the past five years, the event has collected more than $207,000, primarily for new patient programs, equipment and facility renovations at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. Students spend months raising money and cap their efforts at the annual event with music, dancing, games and more.

KELSEY HOLMES & BRENDYN KAINTZ october 6, 2018 by julia m. johnson
FATE BROUGHT KELSEY HOLMES AND BRENDYN KAINTZ together at Creighton
University in Omaha, where the two became friends and started dating. They relocated to St. Louis after Brendyn accepted a job. “He is originally from St. Louis, and I’m from Nebraska,” Kelsey says. “We decided it would be fun to move to the ‘bigger’ city.” Last summer, Brendyn learned that one of their favorite Omaha haunts, the Blue Jay Bar & Grill, would be closing. He arranged a trip for the couple to visit for its final weekend. While in town, they stopped at Creighton, and in front of the campus church, Brendyn asked Kelsey to marry him. “He said, ‘This is where our story began, and I would like to continue the journey with you,’” she remembers. “He even got our friends in on it—they were nearby, secretly taking pictures while he proposed.” Later, the two met their parents for a celebratory dinner at Mahogany Prime Steakhouse and received a keepsake bottle of champagne engraved with the engagement date. “We had the best time reliving the proposal and looking at pictures,” Kelsey says. “It was really special.” The next day, the whole group had brunch together before heading home. The pair will marry this fall at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis with an evening reception in the Starlight and Zodiac rooms at The Chase Park Plaza. “We are all having a lot of fun planning the wedding together,” Kelsey says. “It’s been a great chance for us to learn more about each other’s families and incorporate their traditions into our big day. We really want it to be a timeless celebration with details that we can look back on years later and enjoy.” She plans to carry her mother’s rosary during the ceremony, and Brendyn’s mother is making cameo photos of their grandparents to attach to her bouquet. The wedding color scheme will include navy blue, soft pink and ivory. The two are still deciding on a honeymoon getaway, but Kelsey says St. Lucia is on their short list. Kelsey is a nurse at Mercy Hospital, and Brendyn is a certified athletic trainer with Peak Sport & Spine Physical Therapy. “We plan to stay in St. Louis after we’re married,” she says. “We love it here, especially because it’s a big city that feels like a small town.” &

Moms balance work & family by julia m. johnson
Someone once called parenting the hardest job you’ll ever love. Time off is nonexistent, the day doesn’t end at 5 p.m., and there is no perfect formula for work-life balance. Success looks different for every family, but as these local women can attest, a thriving, prominent career and happy, well-rounded family don’t have to be mutually exclusive. The key is to set realistic expectations, keep your kids involved and take care of yourself, too.

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION LEADER | WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY
Monica Black Robinson’s career at Washington University is centered on the idea of inclusion, and so is her family life. She brought her now college-age daughter, Brianna, to a variety of work, school and cultural experiences, which strengthened their relationship. It also made parenting easier and gave her daughter a rich set of personal interests and skills, Robinson says. “My daughter has had more interesting experiences than many adults,” she notes. “I took her to places like Carnegie Hall in New York when she was very young. And I was lucky to work for wonderful companies that let me integrate her into my workday. It’s important to develop a trusting relationship with your employer, so you can be present for your kids while doing your job.” Brianna also tagged along when her mother went back to school as a single parent. “The instructors were great about having her there,” Robinson recalls. “They even asked her questions in class and let her say what she thought.” Now, Brianna teaches piano, performs as a vocalist and musician, and is earning a degree in psychology. Robinson is involved with mothers’ groups for moral support, noting that gaining insight from other women is important. “Being around other ladies of wisdom has been so important for me as a parent,” she says. She stays centered through volunteer projects at church and runs etiquette workshops for underserved St. Louisans. “I feel blessed to have my daughter and my husband part of the wonderful experiences in my life,” she says.

Kim Carney is one of her company’s most successful real estate agents, but she works equally hard at being a mom to her twin daughters. She got into the business after becoming fascinated by the intricacies of her own home sale. “I discovered I was finding good deals before my agent did,” she says. “I took a training class, got a listing right away, and fell in love with the business. It speaks to my competitive side.” Carney says while working in real estate is challenging, it also allows some flexibility for her parenting responsibilities. “You are ‘on’ at all times, but you also have free time,” she explains. “I can get the kids up for school every morning and be here when they come home.” She also enjoys passing on practical knowledge to her daughters. “They knew what a contingency contract was when they were 8 years old,” she jokes. “I think they are developing a good work ethic by seeing how I provide for them.” She says it’s also important to accept help from loved ones, especially as a single parent. “I am lucky to have family and friends in the area,” she says. She is a cancer survivor and tries to set them a good philanthropic example by being involved with St. Louis Ovarian Cancer Awareness. Carney advises other moms not to be too hard on themselves when balancing a career and family. “We’re often our own worst critics,” she says. “Sometimes you’ll fail, but don’t beat yourself up. It all works out in the end when you see you’ve raised great kids.”
Mona Langenberg began working for GO! St. Louis, a nonprofit centered on running and fitness, when she was just 19. “I’ve been here a long time, and I think that really helped my early career as a mom, too,” she notes. “I was able to stay in a key role but do part-time work when my three kids were little. At a small nonprofit, the environment often is more family-oriented and liberal, so you can do what’s needed for your family and your job.” She says caring about her ‘work family’ helps her and her staff be better employees and parents. “It’s a natural progression,” she notes. “When you are in tune to the needs of the people who work for you, they’ll be the same with you. We are a close group, and we create a nice give-and-take.” Langenberg says she parents with a down-to-earth set of expectations about her own personal time. “You hear a lot on social media about doing all kinds of special things to take care of yourself as a mom, but it looks different in reality,” she notes. “I can’t get massages every week or take lots of relaxing vacations. But I can buy myself a good cup of coffee every morning. That’s much more realistic.” She also believes in teaching her kids to help each other. “It’s a good way for them to learn some autonomy, and it makes life easier for me,” she says. Not surprisingly, Langenberg keeps mentally balanced by staying physically fit. She views exercise as a chance to work in quality personal time. “I run six days a week, sometimes at 4:30 a.m. before the family is awake,” she says. “I always keep exercise in my schedule. It’s the best time I have to myself.”

STORE FRONT A PEEK INTO THE WINDOWS OF THE ST. LOUIS RETAIL WORLD 〉〉 by lindsay jones
MOVING RIGHT ALONG After closing its Cherokee Street location earlier this year, vintage- and modern-goods store FUTURE ANCESTOR has reopened and nearly doubled its space at 4100 Shenandoah Ave. in the historic Shaw neighborhood. The store carries vintage furniture, unique artwork, handmade goods, a selection of health and wellness products, and more.
NATIONAL EXPANSION
St. Louis-based SOFT SURROUNDINGS , an upscale brand offering clothing, accessories, beauty products and home goods for women, plans to open 16 new retail locations around the country this year, including the company’s brick-and-mortar debut in California.
CAUSE-BASED RETAIL ZEE BEE MARKET has expanded into
Maplewood at 7270 Manchester Road! Most of the store’s fair-trade products—including jewelry, handbags, home decor items, and consumer goods such as coffee and tea —come from the developing world and directly benefit impoverished workers. Store founder Julio ZegarraBallon, who is originally from Peru, opened his first store on South Grand Boulevard in 2014.
MOMMY MARKETING A group of St. Louis entrepreneurs led by Lauren Pershing have created a clothing line for active, nursing moms called LOTTIE LIFE . The brand offers multiple styles and colors designed to flatter (because all women need that!) while helping mothers nurse their babies on the go. Tops include a small CleverLatch that opens quickly and can be adjusted easily. All styles are available online at lottielife.com.
THREADING UP
St. Louis-based shoe company CLAIRE FLOWERS is delving into the apparel world with an exclusive partnership with Fur Headquarters, the largest furrier alliance in North America. The ready-to-wear line includes color-blocked designs in a variety of fabrics in a flattering, A-line shape. The Fur and Leather Centre in Clayton is the first to carry the new dresses (available now), but they soon will be sold exclusively at six other Fur Headquarters locations nationwide.

yoga for two Combining yoga, thai massage and acrobatics, AcroYoga has been gaining popularity throughout L.A. and beyond. A full body workout that requires two people, it’s as fun as it is effective. One person acts as the base and the other, the flyer. For certain positions, a spotter is needed. The base lies on his or her back and supports the flyer (the person who is being moved into various acrobatic positions). It’s a great workout for not only building muscle, but trust and confidence as well.

AccuCare Home Health Care of St. Louis, locally RN owned and RN managed, is dedicated to providing seniors with the finest private, in-home health care. In their home. On their terms.
health conscious St. Louis has The Smokehouse Market, Los Angeles has Erewhon. A local organic grocer that has been a staple for health-conscious Angelenos for more than 50 years, Erewhon is like The Smokehouse on steroids. The mom-and-pop shop hasn’t sold out to major grocer conglomerates and prides itself on carrying only the highest quality produce and products, all ethically and sustainably produced. And giving back to the community is its core mission. From Erewhon’s Energizer Bowl packed with goji berries, bee pollen and cacao nibs to its famous salmon wraps, it’s L.A.’s one-stop-shop for healthy food.
israeli influence L.A. has one of the largest Israeli communities in the country, and the local cuisine is a direct reflection of that. Kabob houses are a dime a dozen here and have been for the better part of three decades. Recently, L.A. kicked up its Israeli food game with restaurants like Mh Zh and Jaffa. With more Israeli-inspired restaurants opening up throughout the city, it’s a safe bet this culinary renaissance will continue to keep the West Coast locale on the foodie map for a while. Take note StL.

blast from the past Nostalgia brands have swept through L.A. storefronts from Silver Lake to Venice. Remember your Tommy Hilfiger sweatshirt from grade school or the Guess backpack you had to have in high school? Well, they’re cool again, and if L.A. street style is any indication, there’s no stopping this trend. Thanks to supermodels like Gigi Hadid lending their ‘it’ girl status to brands synonymous with ‘90s style, it’s time to dig out your old gear! If you didn’t save your favorite Champion hoodie or camo cargo pants, fear not. These revitalized brands are as wallet friendly as they were during the Clinton administration.
At AccuCare, caregivers show clients the same level of compassion they would show their own families. Treating their clients as they would care for their own family is the driving force that allows AccuCare Home Health Care of St Louis to provide exceptional care. I HAVE A SOFT SPOT IN MY HEART FOR THE MUSIC OF BACH;
watching your 8-year-old finally reach the level of Bach’s Violin Concerto in D major is a moment every Suzuki mom treasures. A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to get reacquainted with his music through a live performance by the Bach Society of Saint Louis. It is rather remarkable that our city has a choral group devoted to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach—and that it’s 77 years old. In fact, it’s St Louis’ oldest continuous chorus, and of course, it has an attendant orchestra. Both groups of musicians include not only professionals from the likes of the St. Louis Symphony, but also a fair number of volunteer members— accomplished musicians who are in it just for the fun of making music together. Last month’s concert was part of a three-week series of performances held around town as part of the St. Louis Bach Festival, many of them free. Additionally, a pre-concert tutorial about the life and times of JSB was offered by Bach expert David Gordon. Although nothing can transport an audience back to the 17th century faster than the tinkling sound of a harpsichord—present onstage during the entire concert—the lecture added rich context to the featured music, three of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos. Who knew, for example, that these masterpieces were nearly lost to posterity? Bach was not recognized as a genius during his lifetime. In fact, he was primarily a community music director and teacher. Prior to being hired by the city of Leipzig, the city council apologized for not attracting “the best applicants” when explaining why it had to resort to second-stringers like Bach! And as for the concertos the audience heard, we have a rejection by the Margrave of Brandenburg to thank for saving them. Bach had mailed the music to him, but in some kind of snub, or fit of pique—one never knew with the nobility in those days—the nobleman tossed it aside, causing it to remain in the Brandenburg archives for more than a century. “Only because of these crazy things do we have the concertos today!” Gordon explained. Bach, one of our most revered classical music icons, was a musician at the mercy of a nobleman, a town council or a church his entire life. He was required to provide music for church ceremonies like weddings and funerals and to teach young students not only music, but also Latin (much to his displeasure). If only he were around today to witness his dramatic change in status. Nearly 300 St. Louisans came out on a Sunday afternoon to hear his music performed live, and from the look of it, they enjoyed every minute.

SLU CARE SURGEON DR. CLAY MCDONOUGH SAYS THE FIELD OF RECONSTRUCTIVE
urology is about “rebuilding the system” when something goes wrong with a patient’s urinary tract. There may be damage from injury or disease, so it’s his mission to restore structure and functionality to the ureters, urethra and bladder. That can be done in innovative ways, including grafting tissue from other parts of the body. “About one-third of the people who come to our office are cancer patients, another third have trauma, and others are experiencing fallout from diabetes, vascular disease, neurological problems or other conditions,” McDonough says. “We can perform specialized surgeries and treatments to help them heal and return to normal.” He sees patients at SSM Health Saint Louis University and St. Mary’s hospitals, and is one of few surgeons in the region providing urologic reconstruction. When a new patient comes in, the team performs imaging and other tests to see how well the person’s urinary system is functioning. Then, they create a plan to manage or repair any problems and return the patient to a more normal state. The SLUCare team is highly skilled at handling complex urological surgeries, according to McDonough. “A recent patient, Bob Gilbert of O’Fallon, Missouri, was born with a malformed bladder and had surgery years ago to divert the urine into his colon,” he says. “Unfortunately, it caused ammonia to get into his blood, which resulted in encephalopathy (abnormal brain function) and increased risk for cancer.” The SLUCare surgical team corrected the problem by using a segment of Gilbert’s small intestine to create a tube that empties from his remaining kidney to a stoma in his abdomen. “Bob was pretty frail when he came to us, but he’s doing much better now,” McDonough explains. “His kidney is draining much more efficiently.” Gilbert, 68, says the SLUCare team has made a world of difference in his health and happiness. In the past, he had an episode where he became comatose and nearly died because of the ammonia problem. He also had to take a number of medications that made him feel ill. “I was referred to Dr. McDonough, who spent a lot of time with me, carefully explaining why I needed the surgery,” Gilbert says. “I asked if he would give the same advice to a member of his own family, and he said yes. That made me feel good. He has been as much of a friend as a doctor, and the rest of the staff has been wonderful, too. Dr. McDonough said my quality of life would increase dramatically after surgery, and he was absolutely right.” In other cases, reconstructive tissue can be harvested from the patient’s bladder, rectum or even inside the mouth, McDonough says. “Cheek tissue often works best, depending on how much is needed,” he explains. “The oral mucosa have a good, smooth lining, the vasculature (blood vessel system) is a close match, and the tissue is very similar.” He gives another example of a young man with failing kidneys who had been told elsewhere that he needed major surgery on his ureters. “We did a urodynamic study and realized the problem was where his bladder and urethra met, so that procedure wouldn’t have worked,” McDonough explains. “We did a more minor surgery and fixed the problem. In the end, patients just want to get back to their lives as quickly as possible. We are here to help with that.” &

AFTER OPENING SIX SUCCESSFUL CONTEMPORARY ITALIAN SPOTS , Michael Del Pietro
has revived his family’s traditional-style restaurant, which operated on Hampton Avenue for decades. The menu includes many old favorites (does Italian food ever go out of style?), and the pricing is reasonable, especially for a location so close to Clayton’s high-end dining scene. Del Pietro has taken the onetime Harvest locale and given it a sleeker look, with mirrors along one wall and a wide-open, cavernous main dining room. The bar occupies the front, which once was a ‘veranda room’ lined with windows. A starter of Fritto Misto ($9) was excellent with a mix of calamari and shrimp flash-fried with an impressive dry coating. A drizzle of lemon aioli completed the treat. Note: It’s a small portion suitable for two at most. Same for the Melanzana Parmigiana ($6), aka eggplant parm, which is somewhat nontraditional. It comes as a ‘torta’ of layered Roma tomatoes, mozzarella and eggplant rounds instead of cheese-topped, sliced eggplant. In flavor it was excellent, with a slightly spicy, basil-laden red sauce. However, the tomato took up valuable real estate in an already small eggplant dish. The Cavolfiore ($8), roasted cauliflower florets, was delicious, with a light coating of either flour or fine crumbs and lots of lemon flavor. The florets were slightly browned and well-cooked to bring out maximum flavor. Our salads were terrific, especially at $5. The Del Pietro had a mix of lettuces, red onion, red wine vinaigrette and provolone cheese—very satisfying. The Caesar was traditional and tasty. A contemporary addition, Tri Colore ($7), also was good, with peppery arugula, endive and radicchio tempered by red wine vinaigrette and beautiful, thick ribbons of parmigiano cheese. Do not miss the Pasta Bolognese ($17). This staple of Italian food is delicious here, made with housemade noodles, ground beef and veal, tomato chunks and a light touch of cream. It was rich and fulfilling on every count. Also good was the Gambero Grigliato ($22), breaded and grilled shrimp arranged around a mound of vermicelli and arugula. The shrimp, large ones, were lightly flavored with olive oil, lemon and garlic and had a distinctive char flavor, complete with grill marks. Although not much in favor these days, veal remains a staple on traditional Italian menus. Del Pietro’s offers two veal dishes, and I had the Vitello Marsala ($18). The sauce was good and went especially well with the thin vermicelli on the plate. However, the veal, while tender, had gristly sections, making it awkward to eat. Our fish of the day, snapper ($24), was tasty but a little overdone. It was simply cooked with garlic and lemon and came with fresh sautéed spinach. There is a tempting dessert menu, including Almond Cake ($6) from Hank’s next door, our choice. Drizzled with caramel sauce, it was buttery and delicious. & F6|

the play 1. West led the ♦ 4 to Declarer’s Ace.
2. South led the ♠ 2 to Dummy’s Ace, drawing all of the trumps.
3. Declarer played the ♥ Ace from Dummy and discarded the ♣ 4 from his hand. 4. The ♥ 6 was trumped in hand with the ♠ 4.

8. The ♥ 8 is trumped in hand with the ♠ 9.
9. Dummy’s Jack and 10 of ♥s are good, but Declarer still has to give up a ♣ for his 12th trick. NOTE: What should have happened: Declarer should have preserved the ♠ 2 to enter the Dummy at Trick 11 and discard two ♣s, taking 13 tricks when West did not lead his ♣ Ace. Take your time before playing to the first trick in any contract. At matchpoints, always take the most tricks possible.

Q| I LED AN ACE AGAINST A SLAM, AND IT SET UP DECLARER’S 12TH TRICK. WHEN IS IT RIGHT TO LEAD AN ACE AGAINST A SLAM? A| Super experts have gone back and forth on this ‘to be or not to be’ question for years. Hopefully, the auction will give some hint to the opening Ace lead. If not, the tendency is to lead the Ace at matchpoints, fearing it might go away and give declarer that all-important up trick. DO YOU HAVE A GOOD BRIDGE TIP? EMAIL KENNETHMBLAND@YAHOO.COM.

» the gatekeepers: how the white house chiefs of staff define
i feel pretty»
I enjoy comedies that are set in the real world but have a twist of the impossible. In I Feel Pretty, Amy Schumer stars as Renee Bennett, a 30-something who spends her days in a basement office doing website work for the glamorous New York cosmetic company Lily LeClaire. When she falls from a spinning cycle and hits her head, she wakes up believing she is just like the slim, stylish girls who work at LeClaire. Every time she looks in the mirror, she sees a supermodel, and her confidence gets a giant boost. Renee lands a job as a receptionist at the company’s posh headquarters despite disapproving looks from her impossibly chic co-workers. Her ability, personality and industriousness impress company management right away. Eventually she meets Ethan (Rory Scovel), a shy guy who loves the real Renee (though she thinks he is seeing her in her ‘model’ state). Her newfound confidence makes her incredibly fearless and forward, and Ethan jokingly claims to be afraid of her, but he appreciates who she really is—a nice contrast to her superficial working world. The film also stars Lauren Hutton and Michelle Williams as LeClaire family members who are kind and sympathetic despite their plastic environment. I’ve read that some critics think the film objectifies women, but I’d say they are missing the point. I think it conveys the message that we should love ourselves no matter what—and that the person inside is much more valuable than the mask.
SHOULD YOU SEE IT? Yes, it’s entertaining and relatable, and Schumer is a whole lot of funny. —J.J. VIEWED AT AMC ESQUIRE 7
every presidency by Chris Whipple. It may seem that I have an unusual
fascination with the office of the presidency based on my book selections. It is true. This behind-the-scenes look at what really happens in the White House satisfied my curiosity. The first modern day chief of staff, H.R. Haldeman, ended up in prison, but the stories of the men who serve as the sounding boards to the presidents are riveting. The best ones are those whose names you won’t know. A very quick read for anyone interested in politics.

ocal fans of musical theater have been flocking to Kirkwood since 1987 to enjoy productions by STAGES St. Louis, the region’s foremost not-for-profit company committed to preserving and advancing the art form. This year, STAGES celebrates its 32nd year of producing Broadway-quality theater, presenting 137 performances to nearly 50,000 patrons from June through October. Talented musical theater artists from the region and across the nation will star in this season's four diverse productions: I Do! I Do!, Madagascar, Mamma Mia! and the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic, Oklahoma!. "The upcoming season has a little something for everyone," says associate producer Andrew Kuhlman. "Every year, we consistently try to find shows that every audience member can relate to." Season opener I Do! I Do!, a love story, also opened STAGES in its inaugural season in 1987. "We're bringing it back as a thank you to
“
all of the amazing married couples that have come through STAGES throughout our 32 seasons and helped shape us as audience members, patrons, board trustees, ticket buyers and donors," Kuhlman says. "All of these couples truly have made their mark on the organization, and this show is for them." STAGES will present Dreamworks' Madagascar as part of its Family Theatre Series, designed to introduce young audience members to musical theater, perhaps for the first time. Smash-hit Mamma Mia! appeals to a more contemporary audience, even those only familiar with the movie or the music of ABBA. Some may be familiar only with the movie or the music of ABBA. Finally, Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! appeals to fans of classic musical theater at its best. This will be STAGES' second-to-last season at the Robert G. Reim Theatre at the Kirkwood Community Center. The company is happily anticipating its move

in 2020 to the new Kirkwood Performing Arts Center, an approximately 500-seat performing arts center being built in downtown Kirkwood at the corner of Taylor and Monroe avenues. The new home for STAGES and the Kirkwood Theater Guild also will serve as the face of a revitalized downtown, bringing new patrons to the area's restaurants and businesses and further strengthening the relationship between the City of Kirkwood and STAGES. One thing that will never change is the high quality of productions. "The best thing about STAGES is its consistency," Kuhlman says. "You will always come in and be 100-percent thrilled and surprised by what you see on stage." In addition to its main stage shows, STAGES educates thousands of students each year at its Performing Arts Academy in Chesterfield, the region’s only year-round arts school with a comprehensive curriculum run by a professional theater company. It also offers musical theater and performing arts summer camps from June 4 through Aug. 3 for all grade levels from preschool through high school.

Mindfulness Taking time to reflect in real time can have big benefits. Mindfulness is the process of focusing on the present and avoiding rumination and worry. Dr. Diane Sanford, a specialist in mindfulness and women’s health and the author of Stress Less, Live Better: 5 Simple Steps to Ease Anxiety, Worry and Self-Criticism, notes that research shows mindfulness-based interventions can decrease mental health conditions like stress, anxiety and depression. “I’m teaching women how to stay in the present moment instead of worrying about the future or regretting the past,” she says. Sanford’s program prioritizes practical incorporation that is doable for moms and busy women. “It’s a way to adjust how you approach what you’re already doing and pay attention to the present moment with self-compassion,” she explains. “This is the best skillset I have found for dealing with stress and other clinical conditions.” ▶ Simply breathe. Focusing on your breathing helps you live your experiences as they happen. By paying attention to your breath, you can tune into what your body does naturally. ▶ Soothe your body. Pay attention to your body and physical sensations. Sanford notes this can be especially useful because physical changes like a racing heart, palpitations or a pit in the stomach can preemptively warn you that something is wrong. ▶ Savor the moment. Find time to be aware of all five of your senses. It can be anything from taking a minute to reflect in the shower, playing with your children, petting a dog or cat, or even washing the dishes. “Research suggests that savoring the moment decreases anxiety and stress and improves positive mood,” Sanford says. ▶ Settle your thoughts. “This is what we all have trouble with,” Sanford notes. “We get stressed, think about a situation and get more stressed. It’s an endless cycle that moms are particularly prone to.” She suggests remembering your thoughts aren’t facts, so be aware as they come and go. Changing your way of thinking can change how you experience life. ▶ Self-compassion always. We often prioritize others’ needs over our own or are more understanding of their shortcomings. Be sure to treat yourself with the care and affection you do your loved ones. “Love yourself for who you are now, not who you were or are going to be,” Sanford says.

TAKE SOME TIME FOR YOURSELF Meditation: Practiced for thousands of
years, meditation can give you a sense of calm, peace and balance, benefiting your emotional well-being and overall health. Considered a form of mind-body complementary medicine, the process can clear away the stressors that build up in daily life.
Massage: Benefits include reduced stress, pain and muscle tension. Some studies have shown that it also can be helpful for anxiety, headaches and insomnia.
Reiki: This Japanese technique for stress
relief is based on the idea that a universal, unseen ‘life force energy’ flows through us. By using hands-on healing, reiki practitioners transfer this energy to the patient to encourage emotional or physical healing.
Acupuncture: While traditional Chinese
medicine most often uses acupuncture for pain relief, it also can be used to reduce stress. Studies from institutions like the University of York and Georgetown University support this.
Eat Right Getting the kids ready, running errands and working long hours can lead to skipped lunches or quick bites that offer little nutritional benefit. “As women, especially moms, we tend to focus on making sure everyone else is taken care of before ourselves,” says Ashlee Rust, assistant fitness manager at The J. “We operate within the chaos of our daily lives, but taking care of ourselves takes a backseat.” ▶ Get prep-y. Doing the prep work for your lunches during the week can save you time and ensure you don’t skip a meal or end up eating junk. “This way, when you’re rushing around to get everyone up and ready in the morning, you’re already set for the day,” Rust says. ▶ Shop smart. Planning good meals starts with your shopping list. Make sure you’re filling up your cart with a variety of fruits, vegetables and meats. ▶ Choose wisely. While there is no single diet that is the perfect fit for all women, Rust suggests avoiding processed and refined foods, limiting your sugar intake and drinking lots of water. Sanford suggests making sure that 75 percent of your food choices are healthy. “You may not lose weight, but you’ll help your body stay strong and fit,” she says. ▶ Keep it simple. Introducing healthy meals into your family’s diet doesn’t have to be time consuming or take great culinary skill. “Tossing chicken breasts, broccoli, and tomatoes on a baking sheet with olive oil and seasoning is a fast, simple way to prepare a healthy meal without adding a ton of stress to your evening,” Rust notes. ▶ Keep the kiddos in mind. Maintaining healthy eating habits can be beneficial to the whole family, so make healthy dinners that appeal to everyone. To get kids excited about healthier meals, Rust suggests adding a variety of colors and shapes. “They will be visually appealing, and you can make up fun games to play,” Rust says. “It’s also a great idea to involve kids in meal preparation. Have them clean veggies or use cookie cutters to cut out shapes in various food items. They’ll be excited to be part of the process.”

Exercise Exercise can be one of the first casualties of a busy routine. Finding time to work out can feel impossible or exhausting. But Dr. Juliana Verticchio of Consultants in Women’s Healthcare notes that physical activity is the foundation of a healthy lifestyle with medical benefits like a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease, increased bone health and improved mood. “Exercise is an important element in all facets of a woman’s life,” she says. ▶ Take your breath away. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity a week, which Verticchio defines as activity that causes you to be breathless but still able to continue a conversation. This could include walking, hitting the elliptical or even taking a Zumba class. Verticchio recommends doing 10-minute sessions throughout the day if longer sessions don’t fit into your schedule. ▶ Muscle mass. Two days of muscle-strengthening activities a week is also recommended for adults by the CDC. This includes push-ups, resistance exercise, weight training and yoga. Verticchio notes that these types of exercise improve your metabolism, have great benefits for bone health and can prevent falls by increasing your stability. ▶ No equipment, no problem. Rust says you can get an incredible workout at home by doing simple exercises like bodyweight squats, push-ups, sit-ups and jumping jacks. If you want to use equipment, start with a kettlebell. “There are tons of exercises you can do with kettlebells that add resistance, and it takes up very little space,” she notes. ▶ Buddy system. A workout partner will make you accountable and help you stay on track. ▶ Work with your schedule. You may not be able to exercise daily at the gym for hours, so find ways to incorporate it into your routine. Rust suggests 10- to 15-minute bodyweight workouts in the morning before the exhaustion of the day takes hold. Not a morning person? Verticchio advises taking an evening walk or going to the park with the kids. “It doesn’t have to be traditionally organized, and you don’t have to go to the gym if it’s not complementary to your lifestyle,” she adds. ▶ There’s an app for that. Let technology help you maintain your fitness routine. Verticchio suggests using MyFitnessPal to track your exercise and caloric intake. Other apps can provide you with personalized and innovative workouts, and YouTube also has exercise videos.

ALEX THORNHILL IN 00 FORDYCE LANE
YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD IS MORE THAN JUST WHERE you build your home;
it’s where you build your community. Finding the right fit is key, and a large part of the process is choosing an informed and intelligent realtor. No one understands this better than Alex Thornhill. As part of Warner Hall Thornhill, Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty’s No. 1 real estate team, she works to make the complex process of buying or selling a home an easy and enjoyable one for clients. “In real estate, you need to know the area,” she says. “And the best way to do that is to experience it first-hand.” Thornhill has the benefit of working on her home turf of Ladue. She says it gives her unique insight into the market, including fluctuations based on neighborhoods and area schools. “When selling or buying a property, you really need to know about the micro markets and how they allude to St. Louis real estate as a whole,” she explains. “Ladue is a niche market. Being a resident really helps me know the important factors when I’m presenting a property.” Living in the area also gives her knowledge of properties that may never have an MLS listing or be available to the public. “With any good Ladue agent, a lot of properties are sold off-market or by word of mouth,” Thornhill says. “I can get the first scoop on what is going to be available.” A large part of Thornhill’s success is due to her ability to form lasting relationships with clients. She notes that she has a very hands-on approach that is grounded in trust,
which equates to many repeat customers and referrals. Living in Ladue makes it easy to create and maintain these relationships. “My work is rooted in trust and caring,” she says. “My clients need to know that I always want to be present and am just as invested in their sale as they are. It really goes back to where I live and the people around me.” Ladue is a unique market, according to Thornhill, with properties that appeal to a broad range of buyers. She notes that the amazing schools and proximity to Clayton make it attractive to both families and professionals, and it maintains a close neighborhood feel. “I love that whenever I’m out for a run, people wave and say hello,” she says. “Ladue is one of those places that feels homey and comfortable. It’s a slice of a small, hometown community in the middle of St. Louis.” Thornhill is currently listing 00 Fordyce Lane, a Colonial with a resort-like pool and grotto. She says the home is quintessential Ladue, offering luxury, great proximity to schools, and an easy commute to Clayton and downtown. Like much of Ladue, it also features lush greenery that keeps the home private from its neighbors. “This property is really about the lifestyle,” she notes. “It’s a great home for entertaining, and it’s very easy to live in. Plus, it’s on one of the most prestigious lanes in St. Louis.” &

THE LIBRARY ... REVISITED〉〉 People are building larger homes, but often, the most coveted room is the smallest, like the library or study. Why? These spaces are cozy, filled with beloved objects and perfect for intimate conversations. If you’re in need of one, any small nook easily can be converted into an old-fashioned library.
HIGHLY STYLED BOOKSHELVES are a critical element. A 150-SQUARE-FOOT ROOM is inviting with perfect details, including a ladder! PAINT THE ENTIRE ROOM, trim and all, the same high-gloss color to create bold richness.
A FIREPLACE AND GREAT LIGHTING make the room come to life at night.
TRANSFORM AN UNDERUTILIZED dining room into a dual purpose library and homework room.
TURN A NOOK INTO A STUDY with a small table, books, lighting and art. A SMALL, ELEGANT BAR creates the perfect entertaining or gathering space.
USE JEWEL TONES AND EXQUISITE ART; don’t be afraid to mix colors and materials. A MODERN TAKE on the library features clean lines and midcentury chairs.

HOMEWORK: t i d e r
c a r t ex
DEAR HOMEWORK,
My family recently purchased this Colonialstyle ranch. The previous owner implemented many interior upgrades, allowing us the luxury of focusing on the exterior. How might we improve our home’s curb appeal? We would be open to using different siding and painting the brick, but aren’t sure if that would help. To our eyes, the landscaping looks fine, but do you have any suggestions? We are ready to get started and want to make improvements over the next few years. Sincerely, −ROADMAP TO THE FUTURE
DEAR ROADMAP TO THE FUTURE,
Thanks for letting me know some of the areas you would be willing to change on your front elevation. By replacing the siding and painting the brick, you could make a big difference in your home’s presentation. I would like to show you a two-stage approach so you can picture it in a logical progression over a period of time.
new landscaping
FIRST STAGE 〉〉
I would wash the brick with the same color as the siding, allowing the existing brick color to show through occasionally. This will blend all of the major elements together and ease the transition to the siding-only side elevations. In addition, I would replace the garage door with a more upscale carriage-style door. Larger coach lamps also would improve this area, as would planted urns, which soften this portion of the elevation that is not landscaped. New landscaping on both the far right and left sides helps keep the focus on your house rather than your nearby neighbors’ homes.

SECOND STAGE 〉〉
More costly changes are suggested in this stage. The most impactful is adding a shuttered window to the blank gable above the garage door. This brings some of the styling of the right side of the façade to this prominent but under-detailed left half of the composition. New, smaller details such as a copper-roof cupola, a brick pier mailbox and new craftsman grill casement windows work well with the new shakelike siding. Dark green shutters add a pop of useful color. Finally, additional planting creates a bold, continuous arc that frames the front lawn, while flowers at the mailbox reiterate the red color of the plants in the main bed. The only remaining improvement would be to create a paver driveway that would look much better than the current concrete pad. Hopefully that gives you the direction you needed,

FROM THE GARDEN
by p. allen smith
GROWING HERBS 〉〉
HERBS ARE INCREDIBLY USEFUL —and they’re also beautiful and fragrant! I have herbs everywhere throughout the farm: in the vegetable garden, potted in containers and mixed in with flowers. If you’re just getting into growing your own food, herbs are a great place to start. You’ll need to keep a few rules in mind, but otherwise, it takes minimal effort. Put your bed or containers in full sun or at least half-day sun. Plant the herbs in soil that drains well and is consistently moist but not soggy. I keep a saucer under my containers to keep the soil moist and also place the tags near the plant so I can keep track of each one. The following are some of my favorite herbs to grow.
PHOTO: KELLY QUINN
®
REMEMBER: THE MORE YOU CLIP HERBS BACK AND USE THEM, THE MORE DELICIOUS LEAVES THEY’LL PRODUCE.
BASIL
Basil is a favorite annual for summer. If you like to cook, grow an assortment, from the tiny-leafed, spicy globe and boxwood types to the cinnamon-spiced Thai and classic sweet Italian basil. Set your plants out about two weeks after the last frost when the days are warm; basil can’t stand cold weather. Add plenty of organic nutrients from compost, blood meal or cottonseed meal to the soil. Because you’ll harvest often and it is continuously replacing leaves, feed every couple of weeks with an all-purpose, liquid plant food. Most grow about 2 feet tall, but the little-leafed ones are shorter. Basil needs well-drained soil and full sun but appreciates afternoon shade in hot climates. Water deeply during dry spells and water potted plants more because they dry out faster. Avoid splashing water on the leaves to prevent leaf spots and sunburn. In fall, bring potted basil inside.

MINT
Mint requires the least amount of care. I grow two main varieties, spearmint and peppermint, distinguished by their smell, stems and leaves. Over time, your plants might become tall and spindly, but just cut them back. This will cause the plants to produce lots of new tender shoots, where you’ll find the best flavor. To keep peppermint from invading your garden, plant it in containers or a bottomless plastic nursery pot that is at least 10 inches tall to confine the underground stems.
PHOTO: KAREN SEGRAVES
PHOTO: JANE COLCLASURE
T&S HOME
THYME
Thyme is easy to grow in the garden or a container. I recommend starting with a planting or a cutting from a friend. It should go into the ground a couple of weeks before the last frost, when the soil is around 70°F. Thyme thrives in the sun and requires little water after the initial watering. Growing it in containers allows you to reproduce the welldrained soil conditions of the Mediterranean slopes where it grows wild. Even a plant as durable as thyme can be a total bust if you don’t amend the soil with plenty of sand and pea gravel to minimize the effects of excessive moisture. Thyme is evergreen in most zones, but when it gets cold, I cover the plants with frost blankets to preserve the foliage and help the plant winter over. The more thyme you use, the more it grows. When cutting, leave at least 5 inches of growth so the plant can flourish.
ROSEMARY
Rosemary is an aromatic, perennial evergreen that prefers a warm, sunny and dry environment. Most varieties will not survive below 15° to 20°F. It is ideally suited for container gardening, or you can grow it next to thyme since their needs are the same. Keep a pot outside your kitchen or plant it, container and all, in the garden. When temperatures begin to drop in autumn, bring it indoors and place near a sunny window (south facing is ideal). Take care not to overwater it because the roots can rot easily. An occasional misting helps if it gets too dry inside.
